SIQUIJOR PIA)- - Claimed to be the “single voice” of business in Siquijor province, the Siquijor Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (SCCII) celebrated its 26th Anniversary with a bit of grandeur this time at Dong San Korean restaurant in Pulangyuta, Siquijor. Not because of the grandest, dazzling looks of its members and the guests but because of the impressive accomplishments the SCII have made so far for the province. At 26, SCCII remains strong and continue to be stronger to make an even stronger voice as challenged by this years theme: “A Strong Voice: A Strong Economy, says SCCII President Judy Uy Booc. TESDA Officer in Charge Fletcher Gumahad, the event’s guest speaker, lauded the SCCII’s strong partnership with the government and its significant contribution to the province’s economy. It is the private sector that is always focused on bringing about value and change in economy and it does by harnessing available resources, deploying intellectual and financial capital and taking risk, he noted. Citing that entrepreneurs comprise only 4% of the population in most countries, while 16% are imitators, and 80% employed, Gumahad still believed that the they are the engine for growth, creating jobs, paying taxes and unlocking opportunities and the prosperity of a nation. “It is critical then to encourage the 4% to create job opportunities for the 80% and inspire the 16%,” he said . “Every prosperous country in the world has got there on the back of good government policies and a vibrant and thriving private sector,” he added. The private sector, he also said, is characterized by highly efficient and competent chambers of commerce together with other business associations. This mobilize business membership offer valuable member services, like mentoring, skilling, exposing and developing the younger generation of entrepreneurs, promoting investments, strong business advocacy and building strong countrywide chamber structures. to keep the organization vibrant with competent and dedicated membership as it “unlocks the entrepreneurial potential of the next generation,” he said. The private sector has an important role to play in addressing our many challenges. And for this to happen it has to be well organized, well networked , well represented, well funded
and well respected, Gumahad shared. Gumahad also shared some tips to create a strong economy. He said that in order to help local business grow by taking the lead in programs and efforts that create a strong local economy and make our community a great place to do business. (mbcn/rac/PIA7-Siquijor)
