DOH-7 campaigns for healthy pregnancy

SIQUIJOR, May 24 (PIA) -- More than 100 pregnant women provincewide attended the Buntis Wellness Congress of Department of Health (DOH) regional office held recently at the Gender and Development (GAD) building, Poblacion, Siquijor, Siquijor.

The event is one of the many measures of DOH to adress the results of a recent study which shows that in every 100,000 live births, there are 209 mothers who die due to pregnancy complications.

According to Janet Cortes, medical practitioner of DOH-regional office, the congress is seen to help DOH’s goals for the reduction of deaths.

Sharing the importance and the positive effects of early prenatal, Cortes said prenatal care should be done the soonest time one suspects that she is pregnant.

She said it should be done to monitor the mother’s pregnancy and the health complications of both the baby and the mother.

The congress also include the importance of oral hygiene during pregnancy, how to prevent HIV and its mode of transmission.

Free HIV testing and counselling to all who attended were also done.

DOH also distributed neonatal gift kits for the pregnant mothers who attended the congress.

Prepare for La Nina, DILG tells LGUs

As the rainy season is about to start, Secretary Mel Senen S. Sarmiento of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is calling on all local government units (LGUs) to carry out the disaster preparedness measures under Operation Listo.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the current El Nino is already in its decaying stage and there is a possible rise of La Nina during the second half of 2016.

PAGASA particularly warned the provinces of Isabela, Quezon, Samar, Leyte, Surigao, Agusan and Bicol of the developing La Nina.

In a directive, Sarmiento urged all provincial governors, city and municipal mayors, and DILG regional directors to take precautionary measures in their respective areas of responsibility.

“LGUs are encouraged to convene their respective Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Councils to prepare a La Nina Action Plan; closely coordinate with PAGASA for timely weather updates and with the DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau for adequate information on the threat of flooding and

rainfall-induced landslides within the respective LGU,” said Sarmiento.

He also directed LGUs to regularly submit a status report to the DILG, through its Field and Regional Offices, on all La Nina related incidents, including planning,preparations and general assessments.

Operation Listo

Sarmiento also reminds LGUs to implement the early preparedness actions listed in the Operation Listo Manuals for hydro-meteorological hazards namely the (1) Checklist of Critical Preparations for Mayors, (2) Checklist of Early Preparations for Mayors, and (3) Checklist for Municipal Local Government Operations Officers, Chiefs of Police, and Fire Marshalls.

These manuals lay down disaster preparedness minimum standards before, during, and after a disaster.

There are four General Actions to be undertaken proactively by local chief executives to be able to carry out the functions during the critical period when an advisory or alert is issued by PAGASA: (1) create the local Disaster Risk Reduction Management structures and systems to be mobilized; (2) institutionalize policies and plans; (3) build the competency of the created

structures through various trainings; and (4) complement the competency by purchasing and preparing the needed hardware and supplies to equip the actions.

“As the Manuals say, these are done during ‘peace time’ or when no immediate threat of a disaster. Tamang paghahanda, tamang aksyon. This is what Operation Listo reminds everyone that we must be preemptive instead of reactive,” said Sarmiento.

Operation Listo is an advocacy program of the DILG which aims to strengthen disaster preparedness of LGUs using the whole-of-government approach. Its first component called Listong Pamahalaang Lokal was launched in 2014 which institutionalized local protocols for disaster preparedness, response and monitoring.

2016 Brigada Eskwela: Bolstering K to 12-Ready Schools

The Department of Education (DepEd) encourages education stakeholders to take part in the conduct of this year’s Brigada Eskwela on May 30 to June 4, 2016 with the theme: “Tayo Para sa Paaralang Ligtas, Maayos at Handa Mula Kindergarten Hanggang Senior High School.”

Education Secretary Armin A. Luistro said the government is doing all it can to ensure that the schools are ready to welcome students for school year 20162017. “The annual Brigada Eskwela is our version of modern ‘bayanihan’ where all sectors pitch in to make sure that our schools are clean, safe, disaster-prepared and conducive to learning when students troop back to the schools in June,” Luistro added.

Through the Brigada Eskwela, DepEd, its partners from the national government agencies, private sector, nongovernment organizations, community members and individual volunteers mobilize resources and join together to do maintenance works in all public elementary and secondary schools nationwide. The partner agencies also contribute school furniture, construction

and repair materials and manual labor as part of their civic duty.

“Our goal here is to see to it that on June 13, our classrooms are busy with the day’s lesson because the schools have already been prepared,” Luistro explained.

DepEd affirms that with the combined efforts from different sectors, schools are more ready for the nationwide implementation of the Senior High School of the K to 12 Program for basic education.

Since the Brigada Eskwela

started in 2003, some P28.6 billion worth of resources have been recorded by DepEd. From an informal initiative in the early years, it is now institutionalized and is part of the annual school opening activity.

DA-7 intensifies massive campaign on diversified farming

CEBU CITY, May 24 (PIA) – The Department of Agriculture (DA-7) intensified their massive campaign on diversification in the farming system.

DA-7 Regional Technical Director Joel Elumba said during the Association of Government Information Officers (AGIO) – Philippine Information Agency (PIA-7) forum that they urge the farmers to apply diversified farming as an alternative in their livelihood so they will not be heavily affected if any calamity will hit their areas.

“Most of the farmers apply the monocropping agricultural practice which is a practice of growing a single crop year after year on the same land,” he said.

Elumba explained that farmers should learn to practice diversified farming to produce variety of crops or animals, or both, on one farm for them to survive in their livelihood.

DA-7 officials also urged the municipal agriculturists to encourage the farmers to be prepared in times of calamities and to listen to weather forecasts.

On the other hand, DA-7 is still monitoring, evaluating, and consolidating reports of damage on the effects of El Niño in the four provinces in Region 7.

DA-7 recently received P21M from their national office to cater areas that affected by the long drought.

This budget is allocated for procurement of seeds such as rice, corn, and other vegetable crops, veterinary drugs and biologic support, and rehabilitation of farming facilities such as procurement of water pumps.

In Region 7, there are 14 municipalities that was hit by El Niño: six from Cebu, four in Bohol, and four in Negros Oriental.

DA-7 will implement some projects to mitigate the La Niña phenomenon reported to hit the country middle this year or last week of June. DepEd-7 all set for 80,000 students for senior high

CEBU CITY (PIA) — Over 80,000 students are expected to enroll in the senior high school in Central Visayas as the whole country implements the K to 12 program for the first time in June this year.

In a Kapihan sa PIA-Cebu at the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. Plenary Hall, representatives from Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City, province, and regional offices assured that everything is set for next month.

These include classrooms, trainings, and teachers.

Tomas Pastor, DepEd-7 senior high school coordinator, said that in the

13 divisions, more than 50 percent of the needed classrooms are ready to use.

In a data presented, Pastor said 1,249 classrooms are ready by June out of the 2,117 needed to accommodate the incoming Grade 11.

However, Pastor said, Region 7 was allotted almost 4,000 classrooms for this year and its completion is targeted for the first semester.

“By end of the semester, these 4,000 classrooms will all be usable,” Pastor said.

For Cebu City, DepEd Chief of School Government and Operations Division in Cebu City Dr. Joeyleza Arcilla said they have 26 out of the 51 schools that has ready classrooms by June.

The 305 positions for Grade 11 positions were also filled by 105 teachers.

However, Arcilla said, they have “Catch Up Plans” that will enable them to manage the problems on classrooms and teachers.

“For classrooms, we can always adjust the number of students in Junior High in every classroom. Sixty students are still manageable,” Arcilla said.

For teachers, she said, Junior high school teachers who are under loaded can also teach part time.

The teachers are just there but are awaiting accreditation or completion of requirements needed to teach in Senior High.

Nenita Jaralve, Cebu Province education program specialist and operations division, said there are 10 schools out of the 239 in the province that do not offer Grade 11.

She said these in the far-flung areas and are advised to go to the Poblacion.

Amaryllis Villarmia, DepEd regional public relations officer, said the government also subsidizes students from public schools who are enrolling their Grade 11 in private schools.

Under the voucher program of DepEd, a student graduate from public school is given P20,000 per year subsidy in cities while P17,000 to those in municipalities.

“We are all set for Kto12 and there is no more turning back. Let us do away with all the negativities and believe that this system will standardized our learning and is beneficial for our children’s future,” Villarmia said.
