Siquijor provl prosecutor hails Enrique Villanueva town as vibrant place to live by Rizalie Anding Calibo SIQUIJOR, Jan 2 (PIA)--From once a sleepy town, Enrique Villanueva has now progressed to become a vibrant place to live, hails Provincial Prosecutor Jose Imaculado Palmitos in his Keynote Speech during the town’s 90th anniversary on New Year’s day. The town is small but is filled with men and women of dignity and ability who
have served well our people and have given pride to this municipality, Palmitos said recounting some of the past and present leaders starting with the long-timeago Provincial Governors Marcial Pal-ing, Eulogio Omictin Jr., whose ascendant was from the town, and Gov. Ben P. Aquino. The town, Palmitos said, has continued to grow and progress despite its limitations citing the emergence of stores

and other businesses that were seldom found before even in its market place. Admittedly, he said, Talingting (Enrique Villanueva) may be economically small but if we go around the municipality, here we can find the “most elegant, most beautiful, most expensive state-of-the art residential houses.” He also cited, among others, the town’s famous attractions like the Tulapos Fish Sanctuary, covering 14 hectares of beaches, mangroves and coral reefs that is home to abundant species of fish, corals and other underwater marine life. There is the beautiful church and the beautiful boulevard fronting the local government unit, the Pamukad Festival during its yearly festivities, the “Supas Bisaya” (native bread) and its beach resorts that are only needing further advertisement for tourist to come, Palmitos cited. The provincial prosecutor, however said that what is more important is not only for the town to progress economically but for it to remain peaceful, just and filled with love and dignity. Expounding the theme, “Transcending the times through its humble beginnings,” Palmitos traced the brief history of Talingting (Enrique Villanueva), being once a barangay of Larena town named from the fish species only found in its seas and the presence of seabirds in shores which were also known as “Talingtingon.” The smallest of the six municipalities in Siquijor province, particularly in terms of population and area, Talingting was organized into a municipality and was officially changed to Enrique Villanueva to honor the late Governor Enrique Villanueva of Negros Oriental who was instrumental in creating the municipality on January 1, 1925. As in the rest of the province, fishing is a major industry in Enrique Villanueva and is known among islanders for its giant bobos (fishtraps) where the Pamukad Festival is derived from. Pamukad Festival as a way of expressing greatness, joy and thanksgiving of the bountiful catch of fish, is held a couple of days before July 16 every year to highlight the town’s fiesta celebration. DILG unveils PNP upgrades for 2015 in fighting crime,” Roxas stressed. During his media roadshow last November, Roxas revealed plans for the PNP in 2015, starting with the expansion of the intensified anti-crime campaign called OPLAN Lambat-Sibat to other regions after its success in the National Capital Region (NCR). Starting this month, Roxas said that the PNP will be installing closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) in every police station, as well as in 100 high-crime areas in Metro Manila for real-time coverage. In March, PNP is set to digitize their crime incident reporting system by reintroducing

the incident record form (IRF) in every police precinct in the metro, which was envisioned to replace the old blotter system in capturing data about crime. “The IRF will serve as the complainant’s receipt and a reference number will also be provided so victims can track down the progress of their complaints,” Roxas explained. Sometime between the second and third quarters of the year, the PNP will also be receiving around 1,000 new patrol vehicles, more than 5,000 firearms, and more than 52,000 radios. “We want our men and women in blue to ‘move, shoot, and talk’ better so they can combat crime more effectively,” he added. A national emergency hotline will also be operational within the year to receive concerns not only for the police, but also the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and medical emergency units. Roxas maintained that the morale of the 150,000-strong police force remains high in carrying out the law and order programs of the Aquino administration under the banner of “Tuwid na Daan.” “Rest assured that the PNP remains focused on their duty to serve and protect the people,” Roxas said.
