DENR trains 36 wildlife enforcement officers SIQUIJOR (PIA)—The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Siquijor province through its Protected Areas Wildlife and Coastal Zone Management Services (PAWCZMS) recently conducted a seminar for the Deputation of Wildlife Enforcement on RA 9147 at the Siquijor State College in Larena, Siquijor. Some 36 attendees were equipped to function as Wildlife Enforcement Officers (WEO). They were acquainted on the basics in Search and Seizure and Procedure for Environmental Clearance and arresting/reporting process. Topics during the seminar included Wildlife Officers’ main duty which is to enforce laws related to environmental and nature conservation issues, especially those dealing with hunting, firearms safety and environmental and nature conservation issues; and topics that deal with hunting, firearms safety and

endangered species protections. The participants were also expected to work for the protection and prevention of other species from becoming endangered. Checking, hunting and shipments of Siquijor’s wild flora and fauna, patrolling forests and conservation areas most specifically in the port of entries and exits such as piers are among the top priorities of the wildlife officers. The seminar also aimed to hasten the fight against wildlife crimes and illegal transports and possession of the island’s flora and fauna. The DENR is the primary government agency responsible for the conservation, management, development a n d p r o p e r u s e o f t h e c o u n t r y ’s environment and natural resources as well as the licensing and regulation of all natural resources as stipulated in Executive Order 192 of 1987.

SIQUIJOR (PIA)--The Department of Science and Technology (DOST-Siquijor) recently handed over 740 packs, each with 16 sachets or some 11,840 sachets of Ovicidal/ Larvicidal (OL) pellets to the Municipality of Siquijor through its Rural Health Unit (RHU) recently. The turnover came in response to the alarming cases of dengue in Siquijor town. Rural Health Unit (RHU) Center staff Vicente Aloro received the OL Trap pellets on September 29. DOST Siquijor’s action in arming ordinary citizens against dengue compliments that of the Department of Health, says Provincial Science and Technology Director Engr. Mario de la Peña. The OL pellets if used accordingly (dissolved in 250mL of water in black container with ladle preferably lawanit) works by attracting female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes as their sites for laying eggs. Six days after the OL solution had been exposed for said mosquitoes’ laying site, their eggs and larvae (if present) will be killed by throwing the solution to dry areas during sunny days and by putting boiling water during rainy days. In this process, these mosquitoes are killed even before they mature as dengue-carrying adult mosquitoes, de la Peña added. He expressed his optimism on the partnership. (mbcn/RAC/PIA7-Siquijor w/ reports from Engr. Reinhold Jek Abing/ DOST-Siquijor) Wildlife preservation and protection is implemented under Republic Act No. 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, illegal trade of endangered species (such as sea turtles, myna, parrots and all other demeaning plants and animals). Violators of this law are penalized by a fine of 200,000 and a jail term of two years, while the killing of endangered animals carries the penalty of six-year imprisonment and a fine of P500,000.
