LTI to offer organic agri NCII SIQUIJOR (PIA)—The Lazi Te c h n i c a l I n s t i t u t e ( LT I ) i n L a z i , Siquijor is in the process of registering a new Agri-Fishery program-- the Organic Agriculture Production NC II. LTI official Jose Chiquito Mahinay in a press release said, the technology involves the application of organic inputs in the production of safe and healthy food products such as organically grown vegetables and livestock as articulated with the concepts of modern agriculture. The school is in its prime to implement the program because it has the faculty complement and the different production agriculture projects showcasing organic farming, Mahinay said. Among these is the Community Based Organic Fertilizer Production using Trichoderma harzianumand Vermi -culture Projects from the Department of Agriculture (DA)- Regional Field Unit (RFU-7) through the Provincial Agricultural Te c h n o l o g y C o o r d i n a t i n g O ff i c e . The package of assistance included construction materials for the Vermi-culture houses, labor and inoculants. The structures are constructed inside the school campus to augment the vermi-culture project of the school through the increased volume of farm residues that are processed made possible by the added floor space. The use of Trichoderma harzianum hastens the decomposition of organic
matter for its subsequent utilization by the earthworms. Vermi-cast is sold to the public at affordable rates, he added. Mahinay said the business aspect of the project enhances training delivery of the Program. The school has also linked with the Agriculture Training Institute (ATI-7) in Tagbilaran City which also extended funding assistance for organic agriculture implementation. With a training duration of 232 hours Organic Agriculture Production NC II incorporates “all agricultural systems that promote the ecologically sound, socially acceptable, economically viable and technically feasible production of food and fibers” as embodied in R.A. 10068. The qualification comes in four core competencies e.g. Raise Organic Chicken, Produce Organic Fertilizer, Produce Organic Vegetables, and Produce Organic Concoctions and Extracts.

costs,” he further disclosed. Another guest speaker, Kevin Leopard discussed on the crucial role of nutrients and pH in the hydroponics system. In his presentation, Leopard discussed that the growth and health of plants in hydroponics system is controlled by the amount of nutrients and pH level in the nutrient solution so it is extremely important to monitor the process. To supply the missing nutrients, he recommended the use of high quality, prepackaged sterilized mixtures. He however cautioned plant growers to remember that different growth phases require different concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK). “During vegetative growth, you will want a fertilizer with high nitrogen and low phosphorus and during fruit production you will want one with high phosphorus and low in nitrogen,” he added. As to organic fertilizers which the farmers can use, he disclosed two most ideal types. These are worm castings and bat guano, both contained a dense amount of nutritional content that the plants consume to support their growth, according to Leopard. He also said that incorrect pH levels led novice or even experienced growers to believing that their plants aren’t getting enough fertilizer, which is not the problem. “When pH level is out of optimal range, the growth rate of plants will slow down. Plants grow best when the pH level of the nutrient solution is kept at a range of 6.2 - 7.0,” he added. Asked on her impression about the hydroponics seminar, Izel Daug-Quidlat a faculty member of the Siquijor Provincial Science High School and currently coaching an investigatory project said she was grateful she was invited to the seminar. Quidlat said that because of the seminar she and her student were able to gather additional information they could use in their investigatory project. Another farmer scientist from the municipality of Lazi, Peter Paul Jutba said he was also grateful upon knowing that hydroponics, contrary to common notion, can be easily adopted by farmers as alternative method of farming especially during droughts. The training-seminar was attended by farmer scientists in the province, representatives from the Municipal Agriculturist Offices of the different LGUs, and representatives from the academe. domesticated animals in a safe place. For fisher folks, boats must be placed in a safe area. Should you need to evacuate, bring clothes, first aid kit, candles/flashlight, batterypowered radios, food, etc., she said. She said that during the typhoon it is important to stay inside the house. Always keep updated with the latest weather report. If safe drinking water is not available, boil water for at least 20 minutes. Place it in a container with cover. Keep an eye on lighted candles or gas lamps. Do not wade through floodwaters to avoid being electrocuted and contracting diseases. If there is a need to move to an evacuation center, follow these reminders. E v a c u a t e c a l m l y, c l o s e t h e windows and turn off the main power switch. Put important appliances and belongings on a higher ground. Avoid the way leading to the river. After the typhoon, Maputi advised that if your house was destroyed make sure that it is already safe and stable when you go back to it. Beware of dangerous animals such as snakes that may have entered your house, watch out for live wires or outlet immersed in waters and report damaged electrical cables and fallen electric posts to the authorities. Do not let water accumulate in tires, cans or pots to avoid creating a favorable condition for mosquito breeding, she said. PDRRMC officer Blezel Omictin also said several other activities were conducted to raise people’s awareness on disaster. Among them are the rescue Olympics, series of recoreda and drills with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the information caravan/Family Development Sessions (FDS) with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) here. “They may seem simple yet they help promote public awareness on natural hazards and disseminate information on measures that can be undertaken to mitigate the adverse effects of hazards in the community,” Omictin said. Mga Paagi sa Pagdaginot ug Kuryente
1. Kon magpasiga ug suga gamita ang bombilya o compact bulb nga ubos ug wattage. 2.
