Guv endorses major upgrading projects for Siquijor land, sea and air transport

SIQUIJOR (PIA)— Siquijor Provincial Governor Zaldy Villa recently endorsed four major upgrading projects to fast track the development of land, sea and air transport in the province.

This was also affirmed in the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) report during the Regional Development Council (RDC) meeting in Siquijor recently.

In its report, bidding procedure for the P10.6 million Siquijor airport development has been initiated to include concreting of its apron and taxiway.

The project is funded by the National Government under the 2014 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

It is expected to finish three months from the start of the project construction, the DOTC report said.

The Passenger Terminal Building is another project also scheduled for construction in Siquijor port and up for completion by the fourth quarter of next year, the report said.

The port’s rock causeway is also due for widening in the second quarter of 2015 until the first quarter of 2016.

Also included in the list of projects for allocation is the Larena port for the construction of its backup area, covered storage area and covered walkway, paving of access roads, and the demolition of old

roll-on, roll-off ramp.

said the first set of awardees for the Medalya ng Kagalingan or PNP merit of medal were Police Inspectors Reynaldo E. Valmoria, Marve D. Bolay-og and Police Officer 1 Calvin King Enjambre.

Another award known as the Madelya ng Papuri (PNP Commendation Medal) were given to the Maria Police Station personnel SPO1 Reygie Kilat, PO3 Arnel Porol, and PO1 Wilmarc Hinayan.

Under general order 758, the award was bestowed out of their efforts and active participation in the campaign against proliferation of drugs in the municipality.

The same awards under general order 759 were given to the personnel of Larena police station and the provincial intelligence branch. They are PSInsp. Perferio Gabuya Jr., PO2 Rene Gold Gumahad and PO1 Pedrito Vios Jr.

DOST hands out P187K technological assistance to Siquijor entrep

SIQUIJOR (PIA)—The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Siquijor handed out P187,217 to Victoriano Pacanon, proprietor of VJ Foods, as assistance through the agency’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).

The turnover of check was done recently at the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) of DOST Siquijor and witnessed by its personnel and staff.

Pacanon runs a bakery in Catamboan, Larena, Siquijor. He personally delivers his goods to already established customers both in Larena and Siquijor.

In order to enhance production and to comply with government standards, the proprietor approached DOST Siquijor for possible assistance through technological intervention.

With the amount he received from DOST SETUP, he can purchase spiral mixer, stainless steel working table, bread slicer, kneader machine, and gas-operated oven.

Also included in the assistance is P40,000 worth of packaging and labeling as stipulated in the approved proposal and signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

Before the turnover of the check, DOST briefed the proprietor of VJ Foods on his responsibilities and privileges as DOST SETUP beneficiary.

require borrowers to pay loaned amount with interest, DOST only requires its beneficiary to pay the whole amount for the duration of three years without interest.

However, he may opt to pay 0.5% of the total amount so that he can fully own all his equipment he bought using the money handed out by DOST.

Pacanon expressed his gratitude for the assistance he received from DOST. According to him, this will help his firm boost production output and increase

revenue.

Meanwhile, PSTD Engr. Mario E. de la Peña said that VJ Food Products is expected to become competitive locally through the assistance.

Likewise, Montejo advised the public to stay tuned for the latest developments on the typhoon track through reliable sources such as the DOST’s PAGASA and Project NOAH websites.He warned against the spreading of unverified news information via text messages and social media that only cause panic and confusion in the populace.

As of 11 AM, December 4th, Typhoon Ruby was spotted 860 kilometers east of Surigao City and packing maximum winds of 195 kilometers per hour near the center with gustiness reaching 230 KPH. DepEd promotes healthy eating at school with the “Gulayan cook-off challenge”

To promote nutrition among Filipino children, the Department of Education (DepEd) in collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Association (TESDA), initiated the “Get Your Gulay On: Grand Gulay Cook-Off Challenge”, a contest that aims to encourage innovation in making healthy snacks made of vegetables from the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program in public schools.

“Ang gusto po naming gawin ngayong umaga ay ipakalat ang pagkain ng gulay sa mga kabataan at siguraduhin na kakain sila ng mga masusustansyang pagkain. Gusto rin nating gamitin ang mga gulay na tinanim natin sa mga paaralan bilang sangkap sa mga lulutuing pagkain,” said Education Secretary Armin Luistro. He emphasized the importance of proper nutrition in improving the performance of students in school.

Villanueva explained that the program promotes the talents of TESDA cookery graduates, while helping develop nutritious recipes for students. “It is important that we not only provide nutritious meals to help our students Go, Grow, and Glow but also to give them the opportunity to be transformed—to transform their community, and even transform our beloved country,” he said.

RUN 4 RICE: RUN to be RICEponsible is the Department of Agriculture’s advocacy to promote awareness on the importance of saving rice in order to save life. For Siquijor province, the “RUN” turned “JOG and ZUMBA” for rice due to heavy rains was held at the Maria Social Center where participantsball pledged to be RICEponsible.

Ongkeko, garnered the most votes from the students for her “Kalalunggay Tart” recipe, with kalabasa and malunggay as the main ingredients. Their recipe will be verified by TESDA for nutritional benefits and may be included in the menu of public school canteens as snacks.

The two secretaries, pleased with the outcome of the launch, eyed a nationwide event for the coming months. “Because of the success of this pilot program, we plan to go around the country, one region per month come 2015,” said Luistro. He also shared that both DepEd and TESDA will “collect the recipes of the food made and post them on the website so that parents and teachers may be encouraged to eat more nutritious meals.”

Luistro then urged the participants to continue supporting the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program by DepEd. “Sana po maging inspirasyon itong programang ito para sa mga magulang, sa mga guro, at sa ating mga school canteen na gamitin ang mga gulay na itinatanim sa ating Gulayan,” he said.

As part of the directive by the President through Executive Order No. 26 entitled the Implementation of the National Greening Program, the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program was formed as a task force for all public schools to “establish vegetable gardens to serve as food basket and a main source of commodities to sustain supplementary feeding.
