Is it safe for diabetics to eat as much fruit as they want?

by Ma. Idelia G. Glorioso

There are a lot of misconceptions about diabetes. One is the misconception that all sugars, including those from fruits, are easily converted to glucose. However, not all sugars from fruits are easily converted to glucose. Learning the truth about diabetes and the recommended diet restrictions will help manage and control the disease effectively. The general belief is that fruits contain natural and complex sugars perceived to be beneficial to the body. Other sugars present in fruits, however, is different from simple sugars, like glucose. Some fruits contain more fructose than glucose and may have fructo-oligo-saccharides or other complex carbohydrates which are safe for diabetics. We all know that fruits are important sources of energy and other dietary essentials like vitamins, minerals, and fibers. Fruits are very nutritious since they contain good amounts of beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin B complex. These vitamins protect the eyesight, keep the skin smooth and clean, prevent the occurrence of some bleeding gums and easily-bruised skin, and increase body resistance against infection. Fruits are also good sources of fiber. Fibers can be water-insoluble or water-soluble. Generally, dietary fibers help the colon by speeding up elimination of waste, sugar, and fat from the body. These are found in wheat, rice bran, whole wheat bread, fruits and vegetables. Other sources of fiber include the plant cell wall structural component and the woody structure in plants. on some commonly consumed fruits in the Philippines to determine their glycemic response and glycemic index (GI). The glycemic index (GI) is a classification of food based on the blood glucose response of a food relative to a standard glucose solution or a starchy food, like white bread. GI has been proposed as a therapeutic principle for diabetes mellitus by slowing down carbohydrate absorption. Glycemic index is classified as low (<55), medium (56-70) and high (>70). Low-GI foods have been shown to have reduced postprandial blood glucose and insulin responses and improve the overall blood glucose and lipid concentration in non-diabetics and diabetic patients. Nine (9) commonly consumed fruits such as pakwan (watermelon), melon (cantaloupe), langka (jackfruit), peras (Chinese pears), lakatan (banana), mangga, kalabaw (mango ripe), papaya (papaya), mansanas (Fuji, apple), and pinya (pineapple) were used as test foods in the study. Results of the study showed that despite equal carbohydrates portions of the fruits tested, they differed in their glycemic indices (GIs). The slow release of glucose was also observed in all fruits. The table on page 4 shows the glycemic index of commonly consumed carbohydrate fruits. A diabetic person need not to worry about what fruits to eat. With appropriate amount of serving, you can now include in your meal plan pakwan, melon, langka, peras, mangga, papaya, and mansanas which are considered to be low-GI fruits (GI<55), and lakatan and pinya (56 ± 10), which are regarded as medium-GI fruits (GI<70). For more information about diabetes, the “Nutritional Handbook for Persons with Diabetes” is available at the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology. This handbook was developed primarily for individuals with diabetes. It contains basic information about diabetes - its nature, treatment and important factors to achieve diabetes control - in a way that most people will understand and appreciate. The handbook is available in English, Filipino, Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, and Bicolano. The FNRI-DOST is currently conducting a study on the glycemic index of commonly consumed carbohydraterich foods in the Philippines and accepting samples for GI testing.
