Siquijor rep bags 1st runner-up in 4Ps Modelong Ama 2016 regional search
SIQUIJOR (PIA) – Antonio Aguinid of Enrique Villanueva town in Siquijor province emerged as 1st runner-up in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) Modelong Ama 2016 regional search held January 27 at Golden Peak Hotel, Lahug, Cebu City. Modelong Ama ng Pantawid Pamilya aims to rally support from men to champion women’s empowerment and gender equality within the context of the Program and its communities. The search was for all male members
of 4Ps who are fathers, grandfathers and/or husbands, and even a solo parent, with ages ranging from 28 years old and above. He must be a Pantawid member for at least two years who belongs to a family with at least 85 percent compliance in all conditionalities of 4Ps. Married to Misaelita Bohol for more than 21 years since September 22, 1995, Antonio used to work in a factory in Mandaue City in 1991 to support his family needs. But due to the agency’s financial challenges, he needed to find another job and landed as a
utility and guard. Still, finding his job unable to sustain his family’s growing needs, the couple decided to work with Antonio’s father-in-law in Ormoc. But after some time, the situation within the family forced him to make a decision. He decided to go back to his hometown in Enrique Villanueva in 2003 to continue his farming, convinced that it was the best way to provide full support to his family.

Siquijor rep bags 1st runner-up in 4Ps Modelong Ama 2016.....from page 1 The most challenging decision the couple made about was the agreement in terms of livelihood considering the couple’s educational attainment and each capacity to find better job. Antonio admitted he only reached Grade 5 while his wife, Misaelita, is a graduate of a two-year Associate in Secretarial course. The couple decided that Misaelita will work outside Siquijor Province for greener pastures and Antonio to stand as a father and mother to their daughters Marie Antonette, 21, a second year Bachelor of Science in Education student in Siquijor State College, and Marry Ann, 16, a grade 10 student of Enrique Villanueva National High School. To augment his family’s income, he continued his farming while Misaelita worked in other places like Cagayan, Cebu, and Iligan, until recently she was employed as a househelp in Manila. As a mother, she never failed to communicate with her family, Antonio said of his wife. “Kada-adlaw nag follow-up akong asawa. Kinahanglan updated mi sa usa’gusa (Everyday she calls and talks to us. In the morning she would ask if we have taken our breakfast or our children have gone to school. During lunchtime and in the evening she would follow us up and kept ourselves updated with each other),” he said. Most of the time, Antonio said it is Marie Antonette, the eldest daughter, who claims the money from their mother and buys food and other needs from Larena town where she stayed and study. Antonio’s share is the giving of allowances to their daughters that he gets from selling goats, chickens, and other farm produce. If the harvest is good, he lets Mary Ann sell in school like sibuyas dahunan (spring onion). Neighbors and others also buy some vegetable from Antonio like ampalaya (bitter gourd), eggplant, kamoteng kahoy, and many others. Antonio wakes up at 4:00 in the morning everyday to cook food for him and Marry Ann. According to him, he knows that his daughter is dedicated in her school that she often sleeps late at night and wakes up early to study even though they do not have electricity. But he still trains her in other household chores. He delegates to her the washing of dishes and cleaning the house during weekends or during no class while he
is in charge of animal care and doing heavy jobs. During school days, Antonio does the laundry, especially Marry Ann’s uniform, and cleans the house. That is why I understand the sacrifices of women. I know how it feels to be washing clothes and get back pains afterwards because I’ve been doing it myself even if my wife is around),” he said. As a parent to two daughters, Antonio stressed that discipline is of great importance. He knows that his daughters will become adults who will possibly become mothers and wives in the future. Respect and hard work should be instilled in their minds while still young, he said. He wants his children to feel that they are always on their side, supporting and caring for them. Not wanting them to experience what he went through from his father, who was a womanizer and abused his mother, he ensures that open communication or discussion with his daughters is established. He doesn’t believe that spanking is a form of discipline for it results to rebellion. “Dili nako konsentihon akong mga anak. Gichallenge pud nako silang mo-share sa akoa ug moistorya kung naa koy sayop isip amahan nila (I never tolerate my children. I challenge them to share and talk to me when even they find me wrong),” he said. “Sa una maulaw mi kay papa man siya, pero, magdungan man mi inig pangaon namo, hinay-hinay name moistorya sa iya (At first, we are reluctant to tell him but since we eat together always, we became open to each other),” Marie Antonette said. Though Antonio never stops his daughters, he is also worried when his eldest daughter enters into a relationship. He understands because he believes that it is just a normal feeling. He even welcomes his daughter’s boyfriend at home and, most of the time, gives advices to avoid early marriage. He always shows to them that parents are there to guide them, not to reprimand their negative actions, but to remind them about the importance of having a good education towards a better future. PANTAWID PROGRAM AND OTHER COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Antonio’s lack in educational attainment is not a hindrance. He develops his self esteem and ability to talk and relate with others through listening and observing how to deliver a good speech or confronting other people from radio, television and from politicians.
“Mag-unsa man nang grado kung dili kabalo moistorya? (What grades will do if you do not know how to relate and talk with people?”, he asks. In fact, he was enrolled in Alternative Learning System and will take again the examination. Antonio is a parent leader for five years now. He feels responsible to the members that he even filed a complaint against those who involved in gambling and helped the Grievance Officer during spot checks in their barangay. e said he did it not for himself, but to clean the name of their barangay, even the name of their municipality that is known for gambling. He walks more or less one kilometer during their monthly Family Development Session (FDS). As a way of their support to the barangay, Antonio’s cluster initiated to have Clean-up Drive, coastal or upland, depending on the barangay’s request every third Sunday of the month. With it, he influences other husbands to take part too in the activities. Since he attended the Gender Sensitivity Training (GST) cum Empowerment and Reaffirmation of Paternal Abilities (ERPAT) and Men Oppose Violence Against Women Everywhere (MOVE), he served as a Resource Speaker, not only to his own cluster, but to other barangays. In Barangay Lotloton, he is appointed as one of the members in Lotloton MASA MASID (Mamamayang Ayaw sa Anomalya, Mamamayang Ayaw sa Iligal na Druga), Barangay LupongTagapamayapa, Barangay Health Board and Barangay Development Council. He is also a member of Local Poverty Reduction Action Team (LPRAT) representing the Pantawid Program. “Dako kaayong gikatabang ang FDS kay daghan ming nakat-unan labi na sa paglambo sa pamilya ug daghang opportunidad nga gihatag (FDS helped us learned a lot especially on improving our family spiritually and economically and has given us access to many opportunities),” claimed Antonio. When his daughters were asked about the sharing of their father on FDS topics, Marry Ann mentioned about gender equality. “Pareha ra ug treatment ang baye ug laki sa society (Equal trearment for male and female). Pag naay moabot nga bagyo, kinahanglan nga magplano (A family has to plan and prepare for any calamities, are some of the learnings),” Marie Antonette shared. Antonio is active in community activities. For him, everyone should have a social responsibility to the community and to the government as a whole. National Secretariat, ug DepEd CO.
