DTI assists MSMEs; generates 325 jobs in last 13 months SIQUIJOR (PIA) – For the last 13 months, the Department of Trade and Industry has provided assistance to different stakeholders and organizations in the province especially micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMES) for them to be effective, proficient, and productive. This was bared by DTI-Siquijor Information Officer Jebe Magusara during this month’s gathering and information sharing of the Siquijor Association of Information Disseminators at the Siquijor State College (SC) Cafeteria in Larena, Siquijor. “In this manner, we develop market and create spontaneous connection between MSMEs and its prospect buyers to build sound relationship and sustainability,” he said. Currently, DTI has generated 325 jobs out of 217 MSMES assisted, gaining 7.5 million domestic sales for the whole year. Tr a i n i n g s w h i c h f o c u s o n productivity, managerial and entrepreneurial skills enhancement were also conducted, of which 19 are under the DTI-Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) and 13 under the Small and Medium Enterprises Roving Academy (SMERA). This is to equip MSMEs with skills to meet new trends in the market and constant changing product and customer preferences, Magusara explained. Big events were also facilitated such as launching of new Negosyo Center at the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Larena, this province in August last year which were participated in by local and national agencies as well as the private sectors. Moreover, Magusara reported, DTI has also conducted Agro, Trade and Food Fair in line with the celebration of Araw ng Siquijor in September 2016 which were also participated in by the local MSMEs to help them build brand identity. In addition, Consumer Welfare Unit (CWU) of DTI also conducted a Seminar on Consumer Act in celebration with the Consumer Welfare Month at Carmelite college.

NFA Siquijor encourages public to conserve rice SIQUIJOR (PIA) – The National Food Authority (NFA) asked Siquijodnons to participate in their campaign for rice preservation and conservation. NFA Provincial Manager Carlos Cortes made the appeal during the monthly info sharing of the Siquijor Association and Information Disseminators (SAID) held recently at the Siquijor State College (SSC) Cafeteria, Larena, Siquijor. He cited the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) study which revealed that Filipinos wasted about two tablespoons of cooked rice in each meal. In 2010, he said rice wastage was equivalent to 13 percent of the rice imports of the same year amounting to 6.2B on the consumption of nearly 2.6M Filipinos a year,
or a total of about 9.29 M bags wasted every year, he said. “As of now, there are 100M plus Filipino whose wastage can feed the two weeks consumption of rice based upon the daily consumption requirement of 726,000 bags for the whole nation,” he said. In response, Cortes said NFA has intensively been campaigning for rice conservation through its Ugnayan Program and other information and education campaigns. Another measure, he said , is NFA’s campaign for food guardians. Food guardians are volunteers tasked to visit schools, villages or communities and
