Veterans Day IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO SERVED… IN HONOR OF THOSE WHO SERVE US NOW ! In the USA, Veterans Day annually falls on November 11. This day our Veterans are thanked for their services to the United States on Veterans Day. HISTORY: On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be “filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory”. There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11am. In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the
president should “issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.” An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of service men in the history of the United States and the American forces fought in Korea. In 1954, the veteran’s service organizations urged Congress to change the word “Armistice” to “Veterans”. Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, where ever and whenever they had served. (timeanddate.com)

by this time, everything is back “on track”. Clubs are meeting. Pools are open. The Choralaires are rehearsing. Rehearsals for our play are in full swing. The golf course is active and the pub is serving patrons once again. Our streets and lawns are cleaned and groomed. I could go on and on, but you get my point. We are so fortunate to live in a community where everyone celebrates all that life has to offer. Along those lines, I want to welcome back those seasonal residents who have begun to return. I hope you will appreciate all that has happened here while you were away, and we look forward to your participation in coming events. I would also be remiss if I didn’t take a moment as the busy season approaches to remind everyone to maintain “watchful eyes” . Check on your neighbor’s home as well as yours! Also, with more and more activity and repair work, things will indeed get busier and traffic will pick up. Please remember to obey the auto speed limits and age restrictions regarding our golf carts. Courtesy is contagious! But most importantly…..Enjoy Del Tura! Take advantage of this great Florida weather while everyone up north gets ready for the cold and snow. In our last issue of The Tower I sent you all greetings from Cordele GA. I can’t begin to tell you how wonderful it is to write the following…… GREETINGS FROM SAN MIGUEL LANE IN DEL TURA! I know you all agree with me when I say how awesome it is to be home…..frankly, how great it is to have a home in which to come back! In the period of time since this catastrophic storm hit, I have been incredibly impressed by the spirit and enthusiasm of both the residents AND our staff here in Del Tura. The care and compassion shown by everyone, is remarkable to say the least. It is what makes our community special in my book! As I write this, I am fully aware that more than twenty five days will elapse until you read it, and I take great comfort and pride in knowing that

September has passed, along with that little storm we know as Hurricane Irma. I hope the [people who may have needed the services of FISH after the hurricane had blown over Del Tura, understood how difficult it was to get drivers. If your doctor was like mine, all appointments were canceled and rebooked. We were able to still hold our Annual Flu Clinic on the 28th. October brings back many snowbirds; you can tell by the increase in traffic. FISH has discussed at our monthly meeting the idea of holding next year’s flu clinic later in the fall. This would give our residents more time to return to Del Tura and be able to receive their flu injections right here. As a result of one of our board members, Garnet Fleming, who became ill over the summer, FISH has made a change in our directors. Replacing Garnet as secretary is Pat Casillo. Sue Symes stepped down as a director and Susan Bar-
on kindly took her place. Sue is still in charge of our Transportation Committee. Once again I am reminding our residents about some of the services that FISH offers. If you need a ride to a doctor’s appointment or shopping, please call our FISH line at 997-3474 and leave a message. A FISH member will call you back to let you know we have received your message and that we are looking for a driver for you. When we locate a driver, that person will call you and confirm the date and time of your appointment. The driver will pick you up at your home, drive you to the appointment and stay with you until the appointment is over, then drive you home and safely see you inside. This is a completely free service. Another service FISH has is a trailer full of medical equipment that we lend to our residents at no charge whatsoever. Again if we can assist in any way, please call our FISH number.
If you would like to become a FISH member please call Betty Scheetz at 1-609-477-9147 or see her at Tuesday Coffee at the FISH table. We always need new members. Our next big event will be our luncheon for any resident over 90 in 2018. Each resident may bring a friend to the luncheon that is completely free to both people. We are planning an elegant afternoon with music. Please call Ginnie at 239322-9863 to add your name to the list or if you know someone who will be in their 90’s, please let us know.

FISH Fruit Tree Picking Project
Year End Report October 2016 - September 2017
This year we picked avocados, bananas, grapefruit, lemons, limes, mangos, oranges, star fruit and tangerines from trees at the homes of 33 Del Tura residents. We picked 2 or 3 times at six of these homes. Thanks to the mango trees of the Cooks and the Roigers, we were able to pick 1,503 pounds of fruit from just their 2 trees! Amazing! Our grand total for this picking year was 4,663 pounds of fruit
which was delivered to the Community Cooperative. Our 4,663 pounds of fruit helped in feeding some of the 20,000 plus Lee County neighbors in need during 2016 and 2017. The fruit we donated was distributed to people at the Community Café/Soup Kitchen or added to the meals they were served at the Café. During 2016, the Community Cooperative provided 500,000 pounds of food to our neighbors in need and we are proud to have been part of
that great effort. Thank you Del Tura residents for donating your fruit to this wonderful cause! The 10 volunteers who picked fruit this year were: Rick Rudzik, Barry Plisch, Sherry Plisch, Rich Symes, David Lane, Woody Cook, Denise Rose, Linda Berlovich, Maria Soper and Diana Camp. These volunteers put in roughly 110 volunteer hours. Rich Rudzik& Sherry Plisch (Co-Chairs)

didn’t. Unconditionally! Material things didn’t mean much back then heck… we were kids, we were happy, and the world was full of people that loved us, fed us, provided us with everything we needed to survive and thrive with. And we were Thankful! As our lives brought us more responsibility, we began to realize that the importance of being thankful became more than a just a list of names that we would rattle off like a grocery list. When we recited those prayers as younger children kneeling beside our beds, we did so with loving eyes watching and patient ears listening. As young adults we soon realized the focus shifts from having our individual needs met and meeting the needs of others. During this period in our lives, our circle of family and friends continued to grow even larger. We are striving to be successful, beginning with our own families, asking God to now bless us with the strength to provide for them each day. Through perseverance and hard work we were able to raise our families and foster in them the independence they would need to start their own lives. The circle of life continued to evolve…
Now in this stage in our lives we are thankful for each precious moment spent with family and friends. The special people that come into our lives “at different seasons for different reasons” gifting us with those beautiful memories that we will always hold close within our hearts. As our circle of life continues and the years pass, we find the simplest things are the most important. Those basic needs that were so vital to us at the beginning of our lives; love, acceptance, kindness and compassion, continue to be the common thread that helps us through the ups and downs of life. As we bow our heads to reflect on our blessings this Thanksgiving Day, please remember to be thankful for all the people that have touched your lives in the past and the ones who continue to enhance our lives in the present. Let us all ask our God to bless us with good health and the ability to open up our hearts to everyone in need. Whether it Isa smile, a hug, or a kind word…the effects will be everlasting. Happy Thanksgiving & God Bless!

Thankfulness grows in meaning as we grow in life…. As young children we were taught to show our appreciation by blessing the people that we loved in our nightly prayers. As Dad or Mom tucked us in each night, we would give thanks and ask God to give blessings to all the people that made up our world and supplied us with our basic daily needs. With the help of a parent, grandparent, or another loving family member we would recite our grocery list of blessings. Each and every one of those blessings was vital to our survival and it was so important not to forget any of them. We were thankful for our daily food, a warm sheltering home, but most of all the secure feeling of being loved unconditionally. Later, as we entered school our world grew larger and we realized the importance of having friends and we began to give thanks and blessings to the new people in our lives. It didn’t matter if our new friends were less or more fortunate than we were; we all began our lives being thankful for the simple things of life, most importantly the love of the people who cared for you, encouraged you, hugged you when you needed it, or when you

Take Action on ‘Giving Tuesday’ … and Beyond You probably already know about the two big shopping days – Black Friday and Cyber Monday – that follow Thanksgiving. But did you know that Giving Tuesday is observed on Nov. 28? By showing your generosity on this day and throughout the holiday season, you can benefit charitable organizations and your loved ones – and your gifts can even provide you with some potential financial advantages. So, what sort of gifts should you consider? Here are a couple of suggestions for the charitable organizations you support: Give cash. Any charitable group will welcome cash contributions. And if the charity has 501(c)(3) status (named after the section of the Internal Revenue Code that governs such groups), your gift can offer you a tax deduction. So, for example, if you are in the 25 percent tax bracket and you give $1,000 to a qualified charity, you will be able to deduct $250 from your taxes. (You will need to itemize deductions to gain this tax benefit.) Generally speaking, your maximum deduction is limited to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. You might be able expand the reach of your cash gifts through your workplace. Some companies will match some of your contributions to charitable organizations. Also, your employer may allow you to apply for larger grants to support nonprofit groups, especially those in which many employees are actively involved. Donate appreciated stocks. If you have stocks that have grown significantly in value, you may want to donate them to a charitable group. You will be allowed a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift on the date of the transfer, even if your original cost was only a fraction of today’s value. Furthermore, you will avoid the capital gains taxes you’d have to pay if you sold the stock, provided you’ve held the stock for at least a year. You don’t have to restrict your giving to charitable groups. If you have children or grandchildren, you might want to provide them with the gift of higher education by contributing to a 529 college savings plan. A 529 plan offers several benefits. Contribution limits vary from state to state, but are generally quite high – you can accumulate more than $200,000 per beneficiary in many state plans, although special gifting provisions may apply. And you can typically invest in the 529 plan offered by any state, even if you don’t live there, although you might not receive the tax benefits – such as deductions or tax credits – you’d get if you invested in your own state’s plan. Also, all withdrawals from 529 plans are free from federal income taxes, and possibly from state income taxes, as long as the money is used for a qualified college or graduate expense of the beneficiary you’ve named – typically, your child or grandchild. (Withdrawals for expenses other than qualified education expenditures may be subject to federal, state and penalty taxes.) Be aware, though, that 529 plans may affect financial aid, particularly if you’ve set up a plan for your grandchild, so you might want to consult with a college’s financial aid office before the child heads off to school. Through your gifts to charitable groups and your family members, you can take the spirit of Giving Day and extend it throughout the holiday season – and even beyond.

As August came to an end, and before we knew about Irma, there was Hurricane Harvey which flooded Houston. ARC, the Animal Refuge Center in North Fort Myers was asking for donations of dog and cat crates to take to the Houston area for displaced animals. Save Our Strays had been collecting a few more of these crates than we had room to store. We got in touch with Wayne Leinen, Jr., Executive Director & Board Trustee of ARC to see whether they still needed crates. On Sept. 1st, I delivered our SOS donation to ARC of one XL dog crate and 3 cat crates to be put on their truck leaving for Houston on Sept. 3rd. Thanks to those of you who left your unneeded crates at my house – your donation was
much appreciated by ARC. Little did we know Irma would be coming for us next! We were very lucky here in Del Tura with most of our damage being trees and vegetation. We had several colony cats that went missing or were hiding till most of the noise from saws and machinery was over. The last of our missing cats got home 2
weeks after Irma when her Registered Caregiver called me to let me know her “baby” was safe. Trapping will be in full swing, now that the extreme rains seem to be on their way out. If you are interested in helping with trapping or want to be a Registered Caregiver, please call me. Sherry Plisch – 239-567-0538

Thanksgiving & Christmas Baskets The Thanksgiving & Christmas Baskets are an ongoing Community Event for the past 37 years. This event provides food and gifts for Needy families in the North Fort Myers/Fort Myers Area. Most recently (last 6 years) there have been 70 families that have benefited from this community activity. It should be noted that all the needy families are identified and screened by Nations Association Charities. Activities begin in the October time frame, with the distribution of flyers, requesting food and/or money to be donated. They are distributed to every household in the community. These flyers also identify the volunteers that will come by to collect these donations and when. A few days before Thanksgiving, boxes are packed with all the donated food as well as food purchased by the committee. These boxes are then picked
up by Nations and distributed to the needy families. In December, flyers are again distributed to every household in the community, requesting donations of food and/or money. However, in addition to food being given to each family, the Committee also purchases gifts for each person, in each household. On average there are 350 -400 gifts required. A few days before Christmas boxes are packed with all the food as well as the gifts are wrapped and put into boxes for the individual families. As at Thanksgiving, these boxes are then picked up by Nations and distributed to the needy families. As can be imagined, this is a very large undertaking and requires the help of many volunteers. Listed below are the tasks that volunteers are needed for: • Handing out flyers and collecting the donations at both
Thanksgiving & Christmas. The Thanksgiving collection will start Tuesday, Oct. 24, and the Christmas Collection will start on Friday, Dec. 1 • Packing of boxes. Thanksgiving @7pm on Friday, Nov. 17 and Christmas @7pm on Dec. 19 • Wrapping of the 350-400 presents @noon on Sunday Dec. 17 • Staging the packed boxes at the curb and loading them on to Nations truck @7AM on Nov. 18 & Dec. 20 Anyone willing to participate in this great/satisfying cause please call anyone of us. All help will be greatly appreciated. Celebrating Two Of Our Own (Part 1) by Sue Dunigan Why is Veterans Day so important? November 11th is a special day to honor the men and women who serve our country so that we can enjoy freedom every day. And behind each of those Veterans, there is also a family who sacrifices a lot while their loved one serve their country. Do you know a husband and wife team, who are both veterans, both having had significant contribution during their service and BOTH being interned in Arlington National Cemetery? WELL, those of you who have lived here for several years do---but probably had no idea who they were. This brings rise to the amazing LIFE STORY of two of DEL TURA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB original owners GIP & MARY GIFFKEN. Mary was a “war bride” as they were engaged, as he was being shipped overseas in early 1943. Mary then decided to join the Army and was one of
the first members of the Women’s Army Corp and became a famous WAC. She was the face on one of the most recognizable recruiting posters and Gip was on the cover of LIFE MAGAZINE pictured during the deadly conflict where his division conquered and secured the crucial MUNDA Airfield in New Georgia on August 5, 1943. Gip was shot three times in that fierce battle and was at Walter Reed Hospital for a one and a half years of rehab. He received the PURPLE HEART and SILVER Star. Mary went from boot camp to the Pentagon for training and spent the rest other service in what was called “ THE SECRET ROOM” where highly classified information was processed. Gip and Mary’s nearly seven decade long of devotion to one another and to their country included their two sons and daughter. Rick, their oldest, as a historian spent more than half of his life
researching his family’s history which helped spawn the video, NO GREATER LOVE, sponsored by the Pentagon published June 27, 2012. (This is a fantastic professionally done video that is a MUST see---a link to it is posted below). Those who knew these two very special people will remember their heartache when their daughter Mary, died suddenly at the age of 57, not long before, Gip’s health began to fail in 2010. Their youngest, Jim, wrote the most heartwarming and eloquently worded tribute to his mother---which I am pleased to share with you below. In the video (link shared below), you will see scenes from Gip’s service at ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY, where Mary will also be buried sometime near Veterans Day 2017. Neither one of them knew that this would be their final resting place--but without a doubt they earned

this honor. So all of us here in DEL TURA can feel extra proud of two of our own “special veterans” and remember them along with ALL who give of themselves to serve our country---so that we may live in freedom. A debt we cannot repay—but one we can remember and be thankful for.(

Celebrating Two Of Our Own (Part 2)
Farewell To One Of Del Tura’s Original Residents – Mary V. Geffken
By Jim Geffken, Estero Florida October 1, 2017 With the heaviest of hearts, I wanted to notify the Del Tura Community of my mother’s passing. Mary V. Geffken, age 96 and a Del Tura resident since 1984, died June 19 at Hope Hospice of heart failure after a 10-week illness. Many Del Turians knew both my mother and father, Gip Geffken, as active retirees who were among the first 100 residents to the community. After arriving from New Jersey in September 1984, my parents quickly settled in to all the amenities Del Tura offered, and never wavered in their affection for the community and its residents. Gip was chairman of Del Tura’s Thursday night bingo for 25 years and Mary was there by his side every week. After Gip passed in 2011, Mary remained
steadfast in remaining a resident despite her declining health. Because of my mother’s humility, something I believe is shared by her generation; few know Mary was a celebrated member of the Women’s Army Corp during World War II. While stationed at The Pentagon as a sergeant in the secret room, my mother was selected as a model for one of the most recognizable recruiting posters of the day “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory.” The poster hangs at the Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. My parents’ military love story was featured in a Pentagon Channel documentary called ‘No Greater Love’, available online at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=CJN2mJjs3UE. Fittingly, as our family awaits notification from the VA, Mary’s
remains will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with my father’s sometime around Veterans’ Day. I wanted to express my deepest gratitude to the Del Tura community for the friendship both my parents experienced as residents for more than three decades. I witnessed this first hand, and as Mary’s caregiver for more than six years, my life had been inextricably linked to hers, a blessing more in focus now than ever before. Mary V. Geffken Mom was also a celebrated member of the Women’s Army Corp during World War II. recruiting posters of the day “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory.” The poster hangs at the Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.

SPORTS Amigo’s News (it’s SOFTBALL time!) cheering for us while we give it our all on the field. On December 10th Noon to 3pm, at the Starlight Ballroom, the Amigos will hold a fundraisermeet and greet. There you will get a chance to meet the coaches and team’s players and enjoy some food and festivities. The fundraiser has had several hundred in attendance in the past several years, and this year we hope to continue or exceed those numbers. This year Stan will present a slide show of years past and for the first time we will induct the first payers to the Amigo’s Hall of Fame. Please take some time out of your busy schedules, come see us at the December 10th fundraiser and every Monday and Wednesday, January-March for some good old fashion fun. If anyone would like to help with the fundraiser please contact Amigo’s team manager Pam Price via email @ pam.price@outlook.comor call her @ 414-975-3502 and introduce yourself. We thank you in advance.

League play is on each Monday and Wednesday @ 5:30 pm January-March at Carmelita Park on one of the five ball fields. We encourage all residents to come check out your friends and neighbors play their hearts out in attempt to bring the 2016 championship form back to Del Tura. Directions to the park will be posted for those who have not been to a game yet. I feel it necessary to share my feelings; as a fifth year player it has bothered me that the community attendance to our games has dwindled over the past few years. The other teams in the league have had their attendance grow and our fans are out yelled, clapped and cheered. This year we are challenging all to attend a few games, have fun cheering for your community, and afterwards have dinner with us at the Poolside Pub or at one of the many Punta Gorda eateries. As a player I can say that it’s a thrill to hear a couple hundred of our friends and neighbors

By Jim Hamilton That time of the year has come upon us again when we dust off the leather and begin to revisit our youth… The Amigos will be holding tryouts this year starting on Saturday, October 28th from 3-5 pm at the ball field behind the North Fort Myers Community Center. For those interested who are new to the community or just first time trying out, please call our coach Stan Young @ 239-7313142 or if Stan is unavailable, call Jim Hamilton @ 208-3131321 and introduce yourself. We welcome all to try out. Tryouts will continue every Saturday at the ball fields at Carmelita Park in Punta Gorda, where the league plays all the games. The team selection will be posted on Sunday Nov 26th at the front doors to the Ballroom. The team will practice each Saturday thru December. The 2018 season begins in early January, date to be announced at a later date (January 1st falls on a Monday).
Nine Ball, Monday Afternoons Beginning Nov 13, we will again begin our weekly tournaments, which begin at 1pm and last no longer than 2 hours. Everyone is welcome no matter skill level. Handicaps are applied based on week to week performance, so all players have a chance to win a tour-
nament. This is not the usual 9-Ball. Rather, one point is given for each ball made and 2 points for the 9-Ball with a maximum of 10 points per game. You usually play no more than 2 games per opponent and the match is over when you reach your handicap total. Depend-
ing on the number of players on a given Monday, we will either play double-elimination or round-robin tournaments. There is a signup sheet and additional information in the Billiards Room. (You need not play every Monday that is scheduled).
North Fort Myers Senior 8-Ball League
This is a 12 team league consisting of teams from nearby communities like ours. Del Tura has 2 teams of 5 players and subs. We follow a strict BCA format. Handicaps are applied based on
skill level of the players, thereby giving any team a chance of winning on any given night. We begin play for the Fall Season on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 6:45pm, until approx 8:30pm. Plaques are handed
out at the end of the Spring Season (March 28th), for Winning and Runner up teams. For more information call: Harry Christopher #239-9977345.

Senior Joke Will I Live To 80?
RED HAT SIZZLERS
The Red Hat Sizzlers Are Looking For NEW Members. If you are interested in joining us for lunch, please call Lynne Mack at 543-4084 (after 10:00 a.m. please).
I recently picked a new primary care physician. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing “fairly well” for my age. A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, “Do you think I’ll live to be 80?” He asked, “Do you smoke tobacco or drink beer or wine?” “Oh no,” I replied. “I’m not doing drugs, either.” Then he asked, “Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?” I said, “No, my other Doctor said all that red meat is very unhealthy.” “Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?” “No I don’t,” I said. He asked, “Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?” “No, I said. “I don’t do any of those things.” He looked at me and said, “Then why do you want to live to 80?”

Good Timers’ Singles Club News by Joyce Lienert “There are seven or eight categories of phenomenon in the whole world worth talking about, and one of them is weather.” –Annie Dillard A meeting of the Good Timers’ Singles Club was held on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 and October 2, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in the Poinciana Room. Officers present at the September meeting were Lorna Callan, President; Nancy Skorlinski, Vice President;Ann Clanton, Treasurer; Joan Whaley, Sunshine Club; and Ann Boncore 50/50. I (Joyce Lienert) took minutes of the meeting. The meeting was brief because of the threat of Irma. We were all
somewhat anxious and in the process of securing plans to either evacuate, seek alternate shelter or hunker down in Del Tura. Arrangements were made for our monthly birthday luncheon to be held at Pine Lakes on 9/29/17. Those arrangements were subsequently cancelled, however, due to the aftermath of Irma. Officers present at the October meeting were Lorna Callan, President;Ann Clanton, Treasurer; Peg McTernan, Secretary; Joan Whaley, Sunshine Club; and Ann Boncore, 50/50. Our annual barbeque was discussed. It was held Wednesday, 10/18, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the shelter at the main pool. This event included a Happy October Birthday celebration for Lorna Callan 10/20, Barbara
Boyd 10/24, and Linda Braun 10/25. Happy November Birthday to Zella Hoyt, 11/10; Ann Boncore, 11/12; Lillian Klopp, 11/14; and Peg McTernan, 11/27. Lorna also announced that arrangements have been made for our Christmas Party to be held at the Fountain Grille. It is with great sadness to relate that our Vice President, Nancy Skorlinski, died during her evacuation to Orlando during the hurricane. We will all miss her and will cherish many precious memories in our relationships with her. Nancy enjoyed golf, playing cards/games (especially Euchre) and going to the “pub”. A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 30th, in the Royal Palm. Many of our members attended.
