Season’s Greetings one and

As I sit here at my desk looking over our Del Tura Calendar, I can’t help but be thankful to all the folks who work so hard to provide the events we all enjoy here each month in addition to our regularly scheduled activities. In late October, we had a super Halloween Party and Dance. The hard work by Bette Cheney and her entertainment committee was never more evident as we watched a parade of unbelievable costumes and then danced the night away. Special congratulations to Bart De Graaf for yet another successful Moustache Ball in our special month of “Movember”, as well as our annual “Junk in the Trunk” sale. In early November, our Annual Craft Fair was a smashing success thanks to the efforts of Kay Nezamis , Wendy Wells and their entire committee. Thanks also to Susan Bell for her work planning the great bake sale as part of the event. By the time this issue goes to press, our Clubhouse will be dec-

orated beautifully by Kay Nezamis and her crew, and the Annual Tree Lighting Concert featuring our talented Choralaires will have been held. And don’t forget that our Holiday Golf Cart Parade is coming up on the 10th of this month. I hope you will decorate your cart and join us, but in the event, you can’t, please make sure you attend the parade and cheer on all our participants. Special thanks to Betty and Dave Sheetz and Charlene and Joe Ruotolo for the hard work and dedication with our Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday Food Baskets. Nothing speaks louder about Del Tura residents than the generous donations you all provide to make this program worthwhile and successful. On a personal note, one of my favorite things about the holiday here in Del Tura is the decorations that adorn many of the front lawns of our homes. With more than 1300 houses in our development, nothing is more fun that hopping on your golf cart in the evening and taking ride around to check out the creativity of our residents. And don’t forget…..we

will once again offer prizes for the best decorations as voted by our HOA members. And speaking of our lawns, here’s a quick reminder that grass cutting will take place on or around December 10th. Following that, there will be no cutting until after the New Year, so your decorations won’t be disturbed. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that we have an Annual Meeting coming in February, and we have several vacancies on our Board of Directors to fill. If you’d like to serve (and I hope you will strongly consider it), please see Bart De Graaf for an application or you can grab one at the HOA office. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, please have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Nancy and I continue to count our blessings that we live in this wonderful community and continue to feel as always that every day here is……..just another day in paradise! Dave Adams HOA President

By GINNIE BENJAMINS (of FISH) Recently my neighbors had a very trying day, both the husband and the wife. The husband was off in the morning at a school where he reads to children. He called his wife at 1:30 to say he was on his way home. When he did not return by 3:00, his worried wife contacted the Lee County sheriff and they sent two cars to their home. A search was put in place and at one point the husband was caught on camera sitting on a picnic bench. However when the sheriff went there he was gone. Hours and hours went by and the wife could do nothing. The husband did have a cell phone, but he wasn’t answering. It turns out he lost it when he got out of the car to sit on the bench. By this time he was very confused. Finally at 8:45 the wife got a telephone call from a waitress. The husband had walked into the restaurant where she works and said he was hungry

and needed to call his wife. Luckily this young lady saw a man in distress and she called the wife. It turns out the husband in his confusion had driven all the way to the Atlantic Ocean to a restaurant on A1A. The wife, my husband and I drove over to pick him up. Since it is almost a three-hour drive, by the time we got there the restaurant had closed and the husband was waiting for us at the local police station. He was happy to see us and said the further away he drove he could not figure out how to get home. The point of this story to me is the waitress. In a very busy restaurant this young woman had the compassion to help a man in need, hence the title of my article. FISH members have compassion for their fellow neighbors. That is why they sign up to help Del Tura residents. If you can find your way to help out, especially driving residents to the doctors or the grocery store, please join FISH. Either call Betty

Scheetz at 609-477-9147 or Ginnie Benjamins at 239-322-9863 and we will get you signed up. Thank You! A word about our services – we do drive residents to their doctor appointments or/and the grocery store. We do not drive someone to go clothing or furniture shopping. Perhaps a neighbor would help in that case. The members of FISH wish everyone a Merry Christmas/ Happy Hanukkah, and a very Happy New Year in 2018.

Taking the time to reflect on all the treasures that lie in front of me and thinking of the ones that really matter. The tug at your heartstrings kind… you can’t hold them in your hands but you can certainly feel them. They’re the thoughts that connectyou with family and dear friends whether they are close or thousands of miles away. Truly timely treasures! The ones that come to you unexpectedly in times of need to soothe you and reassure you that everything will be all right. Realizing once again how truly blessed we are. We all have “things” that we hold dear and cherish. If we lost them all tomorrow, would it matter? Indeed it would! The thought of losing those material things that are dear to us is definitely devas-

have helped others overcome obstacles that seemed impossible. Yet without question we extend a hand and say, “Here I am! How can I help?” Just hearing those words can give someone hope that millions of dollars can’t buy. Giving back, doing those random acts of kindness in crisis, or each day can, and will, mean so much to that person and to you. Whether it’s holding someone’s hand in a time of need, or calling to say I was thinking of you today, you can rest assure that it will mean the world to them. Sure, material treasures connect us to our past and give us the memories that will dwell in our hearts for a lifetime but if we lost them tomorrow, it will be the ‘timely treasures” that will help all of us get through the tough times. So this Christmas season let’s all reflect on our present blessings and bring joy to one another by sharing with each other those precious gifts of the heart.

tating. So many people in this past year have lost so much. We here in Del Tura certainly realize how lucky we were when Irma threatened to take it all from us. People were helping others prepare for the storm…calling and giving reassurance, calming people’s fears and giving hope to their neighbors. Sharing their friendship and making new friends by extending a kind heartiness that was so very much appreciated. Giving those gifts that are the true treasures of the heart! We left with heavy hearts and when we came home we didn’t know what to expect. Yes, it was a mess but what mattered most was that we were safe. Somehow kindness and concern for our neighbors took to the forefront of our thoughts and actions before and after the storm. These are the types of timely treasures that I’m talking about! These treasures cannot be bought but are more valuable than gold. Over and over again we realize how strong we really are as a community and as a nation. We

Del Tura Holiday Lights

A Splendid Display - A Job Well Done By Sue Dunigan “Oh my, we just came by the entrance and it’s just so beautiful”, my friend said, as she came through the front door for our annual Christmas Open House. She went on to say that they have been to many communities in Fort Myers and Cape Coral and this is by far the best display of Christmas lights they have seen at the entrance of any of them. Her husband chimed in by saying, “yeah well, it sure out shines the entrance to our community by many times over”. (It’s worth noting that they live in a gated community of homes that sell for well over a million dollars.) We have had this conversation with many of our visitors and they often make the comment that Del Tura must hire professionals to do such a great job. I am always so pleased to say that it is the handiwork of some of our most dedicated volunteers. I thought it would be good to share the story of this special crew of volunteers. It begins with the one that shoulders the responsibility of managing this project. LEON BUSS 5105 Avenida Del Tura 612-718-9572 I asked Leon how long he had been part of the crew working on the Christmas lights? He answered by saying, “I first got involved with Jim O’Brien who started the Christmas light project, the first Christmas we lived here, which was 2012. This is my first year to have thefull responsibility for the project, as Jim and his wife sold their home and moved north”. Leon was born and raised in Iowa and he and his wife Mary Lou have three children and six grandchildren. Leon enjoys bowling,

shuffleboard and playing Euchre. A special joy is traveling to Jacksonville to watch their granddaughter play softball for Jacksonville University. They help with the Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets and Leon also helps with traffic control at all special events. Obviously, this is a very special couple who are dedicated workers and thus the Christmas Lights project which is so huge---is in good hands. When I asked, “what motivates you to give so much of your time and energy volunteering?” They answered, “well it is fun being involved and meeting our outstanding neighbors. It is important that residents become involved as this is what makes Del Tura so special!” The CHRISTMAS LIGHTS at the front entrance of DEL TURA is a project that stretches over a two and half month period and some parts of it continue throughout the year. Yes, at least ten weeks--working hours and hours a day--to buy, to prep, to hang up, to maintain while on display, to pack and then to store thousands and thousands of lights. Leon and his wife Mary Lou and their crew of five to seven couples, are committed to making it beautiful for all of us. It starts in early November, as they begin to unpack and sort through about three dozen large blue bins of lights having to check every string of lights to make sure they are working and to replace bulbs and get everything ready. Then the work begins in earnest to begin to hang all the lights and put out the big displays of all sorts. AGAIN---this takes many hours a day to get things just right. The lights are turned on for the season on THANKSGIVING EVE. Then each day the lights are on display

---these dedicated workers check and re-check lights—replacing bulbs and sometimes whole strings of lights---to keep them shining bright throughout the whole season. They start taking down the lights on January 15th---which again takes many hours a day over several days to get them all taken down, sorted and repacked into the bins, and then finding places to store it all. The shopping for more lights and all the items needed for the displays is a continuous labor of love. Mary Lou begins shopping once everything goes on sale after Christmas and shops throughout the year---and then intense shopping by the crew occurs during the first couple of weeks of November--as they begin the season “push to get it done”. Leon says he can always use more help---just give him a call at 612-718-9572. Of course money is an issue. HOA and Hometown help fund it but donations are needed and welcomed and can be given to any of the crew or dropped off at the HOA office. Please make checks out to HOA and NOTE—for CHRISTMAS LIGHTS at front entrance. Also, they are looking for a clever way to do a fund raiser--any ideas--feel free to let Leon know. My interview with Leon ended with his thoughts and words, on why he works so hard and puts so many weeks a year into this project, “It is a fun project and all of Del Tura and guests coming into our community can enjoy the lights for the season. Jim O’Brien worked hard to start this project and I feel it is important that we keep it going and make it bigger and better every year!” When you think of all of that is being done over a period of so many weeks---it turns into an enor-

mous amount of man-hours that are so freely and happily invested in the CHRISTMAS LIGHTS project to make our DEL TURA community the “prettiest around”. We all owe a big thank you to Leon Buss and his wife Mary Lou and their crew, Dick&Denise Rose, Lance&Linda Berlovich, Ray&Karen Hahn, Mark&Char Maaske, Frank&Dorothy Barilla,

Roger& Darcie Rockenbaugh and Jim&Jackie Hinrichs. You can send them a card and/or greet them at coffee hour (with a check in hand –would be extra nice). Just wishing them a MERRY CHRISTMAS with special words of thanks--for helping making DEL TURA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB such a wonderful place to live!

During Holidays, Be Extra Vigilant About Protecting Financial Data To help achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you should save and invest regularly. But that’s only part of the picture. You also need to protect your financial assets in various ways. One such method is guarding your personal information – especially any information that could be linked to your financial accounts. It’s obviously important to be vigilant at any time, but you need to be even more on your toes during the holiday season, when fraudsters are particularly active. So, to help keep your important data under wraps during the holidays, consider these suggestions: Extend your protection to all mobile devices. Identity thieves can now compromise your mobile devices by installing spyware that steals usernames, passwords and credit card information. Fortunately, you can fight back. By doing a little research online, you can find the best mobile security software for your needs. Use multiple passwords. Online security specialists recommend that you use different passwords for each new online shopping site you visit during the holiday season. Although this might seem like a hassle, it can be helpful, because even if identity thieves were to grab one of your new passwords, they still couldn’t use it for other sites you may visit. And you can even find a free online program that can help you keep track of all your passwords. Be suspicious of “huge savings.” It happens every holiday season – identity thieves develop fake sites with attractive graphics and stunningly low prices on a variety of items, especially digital devices. If you fall for these pitches, you won’t get any merchandise, but you might get a handful of headaches once the bad guys have your credit card number and other personal information. To prevent this, be wary of any deal that sounds too good to be true, and do some digging on the websites that offer these mega-savings. Watch for fake shipping notices. During the holidays, when you may do a lot of online shopping, you will probably receive some legitimate shipping notices. But the bad guys have gotten pretty good at generating fake notices designed to resemble those from UPS, FedEx and even the U.S. Postal Service. If you were to click on the link provided by one of these bogus notices, you could either take on some malware or get taken to a “phishing” website created by the shipping notice forgers. Your best defense: Only shop with legitimate merchants and only use the tracking numbers given to you in the email you received immediately after making your purchases. Keep your Social Security number to yourself. As a general rule, don’t give out your Social Security number online — to anyone. No legitimate retailer needs this number. Finally, be aware that not all attempts at stealing your personal information will come online. When you’re out shopping at old-fashioned, brick-andmortar stores, consider bringing just one credit card with you — and protect that card from prying eyes. By following these precautions, you should be able to greatly reduce the risk of being victimized by identity thieves and other miscreants. And the more comfortable you are in doing your holiday shopping, the more you can enjoy the season.

We would like to thank everyone who helped with the Craft Fair to make it a huge success! Thanks also to the Hometown

America staff who set up the rooms. We had 46 vendors this year – 10 more than last year. There was a lot of beautiful handmade merchandise (eye candy). All the money raised by the Bake Sale, chaired by Susan Bell, goes to the food baskets that Del Tura fills for 70 families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Proceeds from the Raffle, chaired by Betty Scheetz, Lunch, and vendor fees go equally to The American Red Cross – IRMA relief and to Movember, in support of men’s health. Christmas Baskets The Christmas Baskets are an ongoing Community Event for the past 37 years. This event provides food and gifts for needy families in the North Fort Myers/ Fort Myers area. Most recently (last 6 years) there have been 70 families that have benefited from this community activity. It should be noted that all the needy families are identified and screened by Nations Association Charities. Activities begin in the October time frame, with the distribution of flyers, requesting food and/or money to be donated. They are distributed to every household in the community. These flyers also identify the volunteers that will come by to collect these donations and when. A few days before Thanksgiving, boxes are packed with all the donated food as well as food purchased by the committee. These boxes are then picked up by Nations and distributed to the needy families.

In December, flyers are again distributed to every household in the community, requesting donations of food and/or money. However, in addition to food being given to each family, the Committee also purchases gifts for each person in each household. On average there are 350 -400 gifts required. A few days before Christmas boxes are packed with all the food as well as the gifts are wrapped and put into boxes for the individual families. As at Thanksgiving, these boxes are then picked up by Nations and distributed to the needy families. As can be imagined, this is a very large undertaking and requires the help of many volunteers. Listed below are the tasks that volunteers are needed for: • Handing out flyers and collecting the donations at Christmas. The Christmas Collection will start on Friday, Dec. 1

• Packing of boxes…. Christmas @7pm on Dec. 19 • Wrapping of the 350-400 presents @noon on Sunday Dec. 17 • Staging the packed boxes at the curb and loading them on to Nations truck @7AM on Dec. 20 Anyone willing to participate in this great/satisfying cause please call anyone of us. by Sherry Plish Once again, we’d like to give a big “Thank You” to all of you that baked, worked or bought the wonderful baked goods at our Bake Sale at Junk in the Trunk on November 18th. What would we do without you! We love that so many of you see the “good” in our TNR program and choose to support us in humanely Trapping/Neutering/ Returning these cats to the Del Tura community instead of poisoning, trapping and dumping them somewhere. “Anti-cruelty laws protect every cat in the United States, regardless of whether the cat is a pet, stray or community cat” according to Alley Cat Allies, a support and activist group across the nation and worldwide. You

don’t have to like cats, but they do help take care of unwanted vermin. And as a reminder to all feeders and Registered Caregivers, please take in any uneaten food before dark so that it doesn’t draw in any other unwanted animals.

We will continue trapping through the winter months. We have all of our traps labeled and covered to keep the cats calm once they are trapped. We will check the traps and remove them. Please do not disturb or move them. ALERT! We had one of our community cats attacked and killed by a coyote on Oct. 13th. Del Tura management has taken the lead in getting a Trapper in to trap the coyote. However, please remember that if you let your pets out at night, they too could be attacked. We also had a three-month-old kitten run over and killed – let’s try to keep our speed down while driving through Del Tura. Thanks for your help.

“THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD” As with many things in my honor and privilege to serve as emcee for both the life the time has come to Memorial Day and Veterans step aside and pass on the Day functions for the past 4 storm. I truly hope that a group years. of veterans will step up and bring some new ideas to continue and improve the way we honor our men and women of our Armed Forces. My thanks go out to Denny Flynn, who continually upgrades our small piece of hallowed ground. We here in Del Tura are so lucky to have people like Denny and Tony Oliver who had the vision to develop our 911/Veterans Memorial. I will still be around to help in any way I can. Thursday Night Bingo By Jack Blevons Just a reminder that our bingo season is underway. We started playing in October & so far our attendance is still on the small side. We want everyone to know that this year we have simplified the games which make it more fun to play & also less difficult. By doing this we hope to get more people back playing bingo & as that happens, we are able to make the pots bigger & that should always make it more fun to play, especially when you win. I know we all like to win. We are trying to make bingo a fun time for everyone who comes to play. Also some important dates to write down & remember. Because of the Christmas holidays we will NOT be having bingo on December 28th. So, December 21st will be the last night for bingo until January 4th. Also, like

in the past during the holidays, at the intermission time, we will be raffling out 5 gift cards to the lucky people whose tickets we happen to draw out of the tub. So, lets hope we get more people to come & have fun playing bingo & maybe you’ll also get lucky & win a free gift card to use when you shop at Publix. So, bring your friends because the more people who come, the bigger the pots will be to win. On behalf of Janet & myself & the rest of the Bingo Committee, we want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas & a safe & healthy holiday wherever you may be or go to enjoy it. We will once again decorate our yard on AvenidaDelTura for everyone &your visitors for the holidays to enjoy. We’ve been doing this for the past 20years or more. It’s a lot of work, but we do it for YOU.

SPORTS

Family Owned and Operated

Meet the Amigos

12/17

League play is on each Monday and Wednesday @ 5:30 pm January-March at Carmelita Park on one of the five ball fields. We encourage all residents to come check out your friends and neighbors play their hearts out in attempt to bring the 2016 championship form back to Del Tura. Directions to the park will be posted for those who have not been to a game yet.

I feel it necessary to share my feelings; as a fifth year player it has bothered me that the community attendance to our games has dwindled over the past few years. The other teams in the league have had their attendance grow and our fans are out yelled, clapped and cheered. This year we are challenging all to attend a few games, have fun cheering for your community, and afterwards have dinner with us at the Poolside Pub or at one of the many Punta Gorda eateries. As a player I can say that it’s a thrill to hear a couple hundred of our friends and neighbors cheering for us while we give it our all on the field. The Amigos will hold a fundraiser-meet and greet at the Starlight Ballroom in February (date & time TBA). There you will get a chance to meet the coaches and

team’s players and enjoy some food and festivities. The fundraiser has had several hundred in attendance in the past several years, and this year we hope to continue or exceed those numbers. This year Stan will present a slide show of years past and for the first time we will induct the first payers to the Amigo’s Hall of Fame. Please take some time out of your busy schedules, come see us at the February fundraiser and every Monday and Wednesday, January-March for some good old fashion fun. If anyone would like to help with the fundraiser please contact Amigo’s team manager Pam Price via email @ pam.price@outlook.comor call her @ 414-975-3502 and introduce yourself. We thank you in advance.
