it with me as he neared the end of his very long and happy life….. Never Regret a Day inYour Life Good days give Happiness Bad days give Experience Worst days give Lessons And best days give Memories Perhaps the last few lines of the final song sung by the Choralaires at our Holiday Concert sum it up best….. “May the New Year be blessed with good tidings ‘til the next time I see you again. And we’ll all join hands and remember this moment. And we’ll love and we’ll laugh in the time that we have….’til the season comes round again.” In keeping with that thought…. now more than ever…..from where I sit, it’s just another day in Paradise! the process all over again. Take your mark, get set…..GO! My January message to all of you is a simple one. It is a New Year! The slate is clean! Embrace life. Cherish your families and your friends. And stay active. Ben Franklin once said.” Do not waste time, for that is the stuff life is made of”. We are so blessed to live here. As your President, I wish I could find a way to thank each of you individually for all you’ve done to enrich my life. Del Tura is a very special place! Do we have issues with which to deal? Of course we do. And as we address them, we will always find more. It is human nature to search out problems and create solutions. It’s what makes us tick. But sometimes, it should just feel good to sit back, look around, enjoy our world and give thanks. My grandfather had a saying he kept in his wallet and he shared

5/19

HAPPY NEW YEAR! It seems just yesterday Nancy and I were standing at the end of Main Street in Disney’s Magic Kingdom (if you know me that should come as no surprise), with our two daughters watching the fireworks start the new century. Now here we are beginning 2019! As is often said by many…..”Each year seems to go by faster than the last”. Here in Del Tura, I think that gets amplified a bit simply because we have so much to do. Think about it for a moment…. dances….entertainment…. travel……cruises…….parties….. concerts…..plays….craft fairs….. yard sales….golf outings….. swimming…..clubs…..charitable causes…….meetings……and the list goes on and on. Hardly a day went by last year without something that occupied our time. And now, here we are, about to kick off a new year and start

Consider Some New Year’s Financial Resolutions As the year winds down, you may want to look ahead to see which areas of your life you can improve in 2019. Perhaps you’ll decide to exercise more, eat healthier foods, reconnect with old friends or volunteer at a school or charitable organization. All these goals are certainly worthwhile – but you also may want to add some New Year’s financial resolutions to your list. Here are a few ideas to consider: Boost contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Good news! Contribution limits will be increasing for many employer-sponsored retirement plans. For 2019, you can contribute up to $19,000 (up from $18,500 in 2018), or $25,000 (up from $24,500 in 2018) if you’re 50 or older to your 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan. It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while any earnings growth is tax-deferred. (Keep in mind that taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59 ½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. Try to “max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2019, you can put in up to $6,000 in a traditional or Roth IRA (up from $5,500 in 2018), or $7,000 (up from $6,500) if you’re 50 or older. (Income restrictions apply to Roth IRAs.) Contributions to a traditional IRA may be taxdeductible, depending on your income, and any earnings growth is tax-deferred. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but earnings growth can be withdrawn tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you are 59 ½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. You can put most types of investments – stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities and so on – into an IRA, so it can expand your options beyond those offered in your 401(k) or similar plan. Build an emergency fund. Try to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account. This fund can help you avoid dipping in to your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a major car repair. Control your debts. Do what you can to keep your debts under control. Ultimately, the less you have to spend on debt payments, the more you can invest for your future. Don’t overreact to financial market volatility. In 2018 – especially the last few months of the year – we saw considerable market volatility, with huge drops and big gains in rapid succession. What will 2019 bring? It’s always difficult – and usually futile – trying to forecast the market’s performance over the course of an entire year. But, in any case, try not to overreact to whatever ups and downs we may experience. Instead, continue pursuing an investment strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Following these suggestions can help you become a better investor in 2019 – and beyond.

2019 HOA Annual Meeting The HOA Annual meeting will be held Wednesday February 13th, 7pm, in the Starlight Ballroom. Committee and Activities Chairmen should plan on attending to report on their

activities during the past year. Please be prepared also with a brief written report of your activities so we can enter it into our formal minutes for the evening.

The meeting is open to all current HOA members. If you have not yet joined the HOA or owe your renewal dues, please feel free to contact either Cindy Baron or Denise Rose and they will be most happy to assist you.

Did you know that joining the HOA here at Del Tura is only $12 per Household? Do you know that for $12 per household you receive: • 10 issues of the Tower to keep you up-to-date on all the happenings in Del Tura • reduced ticket prices to many of the entertainment offerings • early purchase of tickets to all HOA sponsored events

Don’t miss out on the best value around. HOA dues are due by January 1, 2019 for next year. They are by calendar year. So if you paid in July, it was for 2018. Any dues paid from now till the end of December will be used for 2019. You can drop off your dues at the HOA office during regular business hours or you can drop them at the HOA table at Tuesday coffee. We are there at 8am!!

Because of the update of our computer program, we no longer need HOA cards. So you will no longer need to enclose a self-addressed envelope if you mail your check. Once your dues are paid, you are on our list and are all set for the year. Please don’t hesitate to contact either Cindy Baron or Denise Rose with questions. Our numbers are in the book and in the Tower.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM FISH FISH of Del Tura (Friends in Service Here) is an organization that my husband, Rich, and I have been involved in since the fall of 2005. As many of you know, Rich takes are of the medical equipment, along with Rick Rudzik and Neil Miller. A phone call will have the piece of equipment brought to your home and/or picked up when you no longer need it. I, Sue Symes, have the pleasure of chairing two committees within FISH. The Transportation Committee is very important to the residents of Del Tura. We take folks to their appointments and get to meet new friends. My “Bookies” as I call them are nine people who arrange for the rides. We work tirelessly matching drivers to riders, and many times it is challenging because as drivers are not here or are busy themselves. I personally want to thank my “Bookies” for a job well done. Every nine weeks the “bookies” get their

turn to “man the transportation book”. Thank you “Bookies”: Elaine Schnur, Sandy Boykin, Marlene DeGraaf, Barb Jones, Richard Keen, Linda Berlovich, Diana Camp and Deb Taylor. You, in Del Tura, can be part of this wonderful organization by becoming a “Fish Driver”. Just ask how and we will sign you up! It is a win-win because the hours it takes you to drive a resident to and from the appointment are totaled quarterly and sent to Fort Myers RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteer Persons) and then on to Tallahassee and those hours become grant monies for Lee County’s needy, soup kitchens, etc. Another committee I chair is that of Holiday Baskets. This is different from the huge holiday boxes/bags that go from our community to those needy families in the Fort Myers area. Our committee provides Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets/bags to folks in Del Tura who may have lost a spouse, just out of the hospital or are lonely. For each holiday the workers come to our house to

DEL TURA’S DOG OF THE MONTH: GORDON My name is Gordon Fitzgibbons (named after my Dad’s favorite NASCAR driver). By the way if you see me run I am also very fast. My Humans found me on line at the Animal Welfare League of Charlotte County. A nice lady saw me (in the before picture)

roaming around in Punta Gorda. She opened her car door and I jumped in. No one knew where I came from. I had no collar or chip. From there I went to the Animal Welfare where I got a blood transfusion from a pit named Diesel. I was extremely run down as you can see. I weighed 23 lbs in that picture. I now weigh 41. One of the recent popular games is called “Bingo, Bango, Bongo. It’s a game of points. It’s fun for players of all levels; especially when playing a group with weak and strong players. It gives everyone a chance to collect points, even if

it takes one player more strokes to get to the green. The object is to finish with the most points. Points are gathered by: Bingo –The first player to get the ball on the green gets one point Bango –Once all the balls are on the green; the player whose ball is closest to the pin gets one point. (Maybe we should start carrying tape measures in our carts!) Bongo –The first player to hole out gets one point. Variety is the spice of life – give it a go. And as always; hit them long and straight!

Writing today, December 7th, we just finished our 5th week of Friday Shuffleboard League play so now I can let everyone know how our league is doing. So far, the weather has been very co-operative & let’s hope it continues that way with no rain-outs. Last year we played the entire season without a single rain-out so we’ll keep our fingers crossed our good luck continues. Before I write the standings with the flight-leaders I just need to mention again, this year with 20 teams, which is the maximum we can play with, that we have probably at least 4-teams in the “B” Flight that are new players that are just learning how to play shuffleboard, so naturally they won’t have many games in the win-column which is totally

expected. We all had to learn to play at one time or another so to those people, please do not get discouraged as it takes time & experience to really learn the game & one thing I always stress to all our members is we all are expected to help teach the new people on how to play the game. It’s a competitive game & also a competitive league but we all also play to have fun & enjoy each & every Friday we play. So, saying that, the leaders of both flights are as follows. The “A” Flight leaders as of today’s writing are Bob & Donna Crawford at 15/0. They are followed by Ben Hargraves & Janet Blevons in 2nd place at 13/2 & in 3rd place we have the teams of Glenn & Diana Camp & also Chris Brylski & Buster Jager tied with records of 12/3. In the “B” Flight, in fist place are Jean Wiley

& her new partner Cindy Grilli at 8/7 & they are followed by 2-teams Ray David & Cam Smith as well as Kathy Boesel & Mary Pimental, both teams tied for 2nd place with records of 7/8. Then there are 2-more teams tied for 4th place with 5/10 records. There will be one more week of games this month after today’s writing & then games will be suspended until January 4th because of the Christmas & New Year’s holidays. Then the season will run every Friday until it ends in the end of March. So, lots of shuffleboard left to play before the season ends. I will update the standings again in the February Tower. Hoping that you all had a wonderful Christmas Holiday & also a safe, healthy & Happy New Year as you read this. See you again In February.

SPORTS 18 Hole Women’s Association by Carol Marra January 2019! Have you already broken all your resolutions?

10/17 10/19

The first day of our three-day Club Championship, four players were tied in A flight with scores of 76. What makes this amazing is that one of them had an 8 on her first hole, a par 4 and another 11 on that unforgiving 5 North! But, they persevered and finished well. Our Club Champion for the 9th time (yes, you read that correctly!) is Paula Lafreniere. Flight A winners are 1) Bobbie Asper 2) Debbi Overholser 3) Kathy Montemaggi. Flight B: 1) Kay Rolader 2) Mary Ciezadlo 3) Ann DeGrande. Flight C: 1) Barbara Luke 2) Wilma Antaya 3) Sandy Vassallo. Flight D: 1) Elaine Deraney 2) Sharon

Daniels 3) Marty Riley. Congratulations to all the winners. This year we had a number of new members who participated and are among the winning players. Well done by everyone. Trophies will be presented at the Awards Banquet on January 11th. Another Member with her 9th is Brenda Sharp, who had her ninth hole-in-one on November 10th on the 6th hole of North. Very impressive, Brenda! Our officers will stay the same for 2019. They were sworn in at the Christmas Luncheon at Magnolia Landingon Dec. 13th. M e m b e r- M e m b e r was played December 5th and 6th. Winners are: Flight 1: Paula Lafreniere& Debbi Overholser; Flight 2: Bertie Dugo& Brenda Sharp. Congratulations!

This past year we voted to purchase a bench to be placed near the golf course with plaques in memory of Members who have passed away. Funds were allocated to purchase the bench. A very generous, anonymous donation was made to our Association to help defray the cost of the bench and for seasonal flowers to be planted near the bench. We are so very grateful for this very generous donation. Mark your calendars. February 28th will be our Member-Guest tournament. This year the co-chairs are Margie Blackwell and Sandy Vassallo. The theme is “Girls just want to have fun”! The format is best-ball. Please check in the Dungeon for further information. Wishing you all the very best as we begin this New Year.

Reflections:

Island Visitor Publishing, LLC • January 2019 • 941.349.0194 • www.DELTURA-HOA.com

“New Year Treasures” By Dianne J. Roderick As we think back and reflect on the beginning of each New Year one cannot help to feel a bit melancholy. The holiday rush and the excitement of preparing for the holiday celebrations with our families and friends has come and gone in a blink of an eye, or so it seems. The tree and its decorations are put away and the house feels extremely bare. Once again we are consumed by the quiet that surrounds us and we think to ourselves, how can this be January 2019, wasn’t it just…??? That’s when we begin to wander back to the Januarys of the past remembering when the New Year brought us so many unexpected pleasures. Those pleasures became the treasures that we hold dear in our hearts today. Some of us will wander back and relive the times of our youth, while others will reminisce our later years.

As I am writing this I’m thinking back to how the Januarys of my youth would bring those blizzards that would gleefully greet us each New Year. Here I am feeling all excited once again as I visualize the scene. Snowdrifts as high as the roof tops! Remember how the excitement would grow with each snowflake! Running from window to window and constantly checking the radio for school cancellations? Why was it that our school district seemed to be the very last one to be called off? (And did Foster Glouster ever have school in the winter?) So much fun!! A New Year holds promise, the unknown, the unexpected… we enter into it with a feeling of hope that our lives will be blessed with all good things! Although each New Year will bring along with it some unpleasantness, we know from our life experiences that we have “no control” over

what obstacles we will encounter in 2019. That my friends, is a good thing! We cannot allow ourselves to think about what might or might not happen tomorrow. We have to focus on each new day and surround ourselves with people that fill those days with lots of love and laughter. Let the positive, warm, loving, pleasant memories of the past and the pleasurable moments of the present be the fuel that energizes your outlook as we enter into this New Year. Hug a little tighter, visit a little longer; take time to play a little more. Listen to your heart and let it lead you. Love, laugh, dwell on the positive and 2019 will bring you the memories that will become the treasures that will lead you through each new day. Wishing each of you a very Blessed and Happy New Year!

POWER WASHING

Thursday Night Bingo than what we came with. So, come on up to our ballroom & have some fun at our HOA-sponsored Bingo on Thursday nights. Doors open at 6:00 to sell tickets and then ticket sales close at 6:45. Sorry, no sales after 6:45 because we have to tabulate our sales so we can determine the payouts for all of the games that we play that night. . We start playing promptly at 7:00 & normally are done around 9:00 or there about. So, bring your friends or your neighbors & come on up to our clubhouse ballroom to play. You

can play for as little as $6 which is the minimum of what you need to pay to be able to play & there are additional amounts you can spend to make your chances of winning & also winning more, which most people do. Janet & I both play & we each spend $12 each night we play. That’s a pretty cheap night out with chances of winning a whole lot more. We also sell assorted cans of soda & water for your convenience because people asked us to. We also sell Daubers which are needed to play with. Hope to see you all there.

Now with our residents returning from visits up north for the holidays as well as the influx of more visitors & vacationers to our community, we are hoping our attendance at Thursday Night Bingo gets bigger because the more people who come to play, the bigger the payouts are that you can take home in your pockets with you. Janet & I have striven to make the games simpler & easier to play which makes it more fun & more enjoyable for everyone. We all come to have fun as well as to win some pots & go home with more money

HOUSEHOLD HELP/HINTS FOR EVERYONE • Flexible Vacuum: To get something out of a heat/air register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vaccum. It can be bent ot flattened to get into narrow openings. • Measuring Cups: Before you pour sticky substance into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the water but don’t dry the cup. add your ingredient (like peanut butter) and watch how easily it comes right out. • Foggy Windshield: Buy a chalk eraser and keep it in the glove compartment of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser...works better than a cloth! • Reopening Envelope: If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place the envelope in the freezer for an hour or two... it will unseal easily. • Goodbye Fruit Flies: Take a small glass and fill it with 1/2 with Apple cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. Flies are drawn to the cup then gone. • Get Rid of Ants: Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it home, can’t digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or two especially if it rains, but it is safe for pets and small children. • Dust removal from Silk flowers: Use your hair dryer to blow off the dust. • Dusting Lampshades: Use a soft dry paintbrush.

New PHONE NUMBERS

Please bring your new phone number to the HOA office and also email it to the editor: TowerEdit@yahoo.com and it will be published.

TO OUR DEL TURA FAMILY AND FRIENDS

As many of you know, the past five months have been really difficult for us as a result of my chemotherapy and all of the many complications and surgeries that have followed. Throughout my long stay in the hospital and rehabilitation facility, we have received much kindness in the form of calls, texts, cards, flowers, treats, meals, visits and your positive thoughts and prayers. We cannot begin to tell you how much

your continued support has helped in my ongoing recovery. Hopefully it will all be downhill from here! Since my ability to write at the present time is diminished, I could not possibly thank you all individually. Please know that Barry and I are forever grateful to have such wonderful neighbors and friends. Your generosity and compassion humble us. Sincerely, Sherry Plisch

BEAUTIFUL VOICES TO START OFF THE HOLIDAY SEASON Thank you to the Choralaires for sharing your talents! Another unbelievable show. Dave, Larry, Bob and our 54 Choralaires, with the Crescendos & Ugly Sweaters,

and a duet by Dave & Cindy, made an evening to remember. With the beauty of ending the night with the entire room singing Silent Night.
