THANK YOU FOR OUR BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS LIGHTS The Christmas light entrance to Del Tura is only possible because of the many residents - their monetary donations, Hometown America, Fred Taylor, the Del Tura staff, HOA and the elves. The residents stepped up for the HOA sponsored First Annual Christmas Wreath Challenge and created 17 beautiful wreaths. The wreaths were voted on with money, the final number of votes was $560. Wisconsin took first place and received $50. Ohio won second place and received $30. Texas won third place and received $20. HOA donated the prize money. The committee consisted of Dan and Sue Larson, Frank and Dorothy Barilla, Mark and Char Maaske, and Marylou Buss. Special Elves are Cam Smith, Carrie Smith, Warren Wyckoff, Jim Hinrichs, Jim Stenzel, Linda Dreese, Chris Bunker, Jeff Bunker,

Bob Brinker, Darlene Brinker, Ray Hahn, Karen Hahn, Ed Urbanek, Jerry Straw, Tim Brown, Ed Laurie, Pat Henry, Dick Rose, Deb Ault, Betsy Bartoletti, Terry Smith. Bruce and Lynn Blackmore. When you see the elves thank them because they made the entrance magical!Santa and the elves have retired to the North Pole. However, they will soon start planning for their 2020 arrival. I really cannot thank Del Tura residents enough for your support and help! I cannot thank the elves enough, their willingness to climb trees, crawl on the ground, wrestle with the bushes and lay hundreds of feet in extension cords, you really are fantastic! If I missed anyone please accept my apology.

President’s Korner… By Bette Ewing HOA President

Cheney,

In January, each HOA household will receive a gift in the mail from your HOA Board. This gift can’t be purchased in a store or online. It is priceless. What is this gift? It’s a ballot for you to submit your vote for three candidates to fill three positions on your HOA Board. One of my major goals as your President was to encourage,

to promote, and to support an election for Board members. We now have nine candidates running for office. When you get your TOWER, please read the section “Meet Your Candidates”. The candidates have provided a picture of themselves and a synopsis of their platforms. Get to know and recognize them so you can choose the ones who will make your voice heard. These candidates will also provide flyers on

Tuesday’s coffee and will speak to you at a designated time. Now it’s YOUR turn to support my goal. When you receive your ballot, choose three and return it in the addressed envelope provided. If you are an HOA member and did not receive a ballot, contact Bart De Graaf, chairman of the nomination committee. I wish you happiness, health, and peace for the New Year. Remember, change is difficult but often beneficial and, of course, “smiles are contagious!”

Thanksgiving Dinner By Bette Ewing Cheney Our first HOA Board Thanksgiving dinner was so rewarding. Residents gathered together for a delicious home style traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings. Many who attended brought

scrumptious desserts that overflowed on two tables. Delturians there were so appreciative and thankful for our dinner served family style. There was even enough left-over turkey and ham for people to take home for sandwiches the next day. Those in

attendance agreed that the food was mouthwatering and the camaraderie during dinner was a highlight of the day. Thanks to all who helped make this event possible. A big thank you to Fred who donated $500.00 from HTA for this meal.

Financial Moves for Life’s ‘Inflection Points’ You’ve probably heard or read about inflection points. The term has a specific definition in mathematics, but it’s also used widely to describe historical or technological events, such as the Industrial Revolution or the creation of the internet – events that changed human existence in some important way. However, you have personal inflection points, too – and when they occur, you’ll need to make the right financial moves. Here are four of the most important of these inflection points, along with suggestions on dealing with them: 

Marriage – When you get married, you and your spouse will need to discuss a variety of financial issues: What assets and liabilities do you each bring to the marriage? Should you combine your finances or continue with separate accounts? Is one of you a “saver” while the other is a “spender”? Do you share similar investment philosophies, or is one of you much more aggressive than the other? You don’t necessarily have to agree on everything, but you should at least try to gain enough knowledge so you can avoid unpleasant surprises, such as hidden debts, and find enough common ground so your household can advance toward your common financial goals. New child – When you welcome a new child into your family, you’ll need to make sure you have adequate life insurance. You’ll also want to review the beneficiary designations on any existing insurance policies, as well as on your IRA and 401(k). And if you can afford it, you may want to start contributing to a college fund, possibly using a 529 savings plan, which can provide you with tax advantages as you put money away for your child’s higher education. Divorce – It’s unfortunate, but true: Divorce is still pretty common, and it’s neither pleasant nor cheap. You might not be able to avoid some of the costs, such as lawyers’ bills, but if you and your ex-spouse can work together amicably, you both may be able to avoid serious financial disruptions. You’ll need to work out how to divide your financial assets, paying attention to beneficiary designations, which you may well need to change. Also, as a newly single individual, you may need to review and revise your long-term investment strategy to accommodate changes in your goals and your retirement income. Retirement – By the time you retire, you will have hopefully been investing in your IRA and 401(k) or other retirement plan for several decades. But once you do retire, you’ll need to determine how much you can afford to withdraw each year from your various retirement accounts. Your withdrawal rate will depend on your age, your asset level and your retirement lifestyle. And you’ll also want to consider other issues: Are you prepared to deal with health care costs? Even with Medicare, these costs may be higher than they were when you were working. And how about your estate plans? Are they up to date? Have you protected your family from the possibility of your estate going through the time-consuming, expensive and public process of probate? You may need to work with your financial, tax and legal advisors to develop an effective estate strategy.

By making smart decisions following your own inflection points, you can ease the transitions in your life – wherever life takes you. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice.

Good Timers’ Singles Club News Life should be an adventure not a planned destination... The Good Timers singles club will continue to go on new adventures this year but first we need to welcome our new Vice President Kathy Aira and thank those members who have agreed to stay on and perform their duties for another year. Our Treasurer, Ann Clanton; our Secretary, Esther Kuntz and our President, Liz Poniatowski. And of course, those

who continue to volunteer to be our Sunshine Lady, Joan Whaley; Membership Chairwoman, Shirley Acker and 50/50 fundraiser, Ann Boncore. Last month we celebrated the Holiday Season with our annual party at the Fountain Grille restaurant. At this month’s meeting we will select the plays that we will go see this year and discuss a few other outings that are in the planning stages. If you’re single and are looking for a group of

friends to go out and socialize with, you don’t need to look any further. Join us at our next meeting on 7 January. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month in the Poinciana Room. Socializing begins at 4:00 and the meeting starts at 4:30. All single Del Turians are encouraged to join us at one of our monthly meetings to see if this is a club that you’d like to be a part of. For more info please contact Liz Poniatowski at ciociliz@gmail.com or 239-800-2935.

Reflections

“New Year Treasures”

By Dianne J. Roderick

As we think back and reflect on the beginning of each New Year one cannot help but feel a bit melancholy. The holiday rush and the excitement of preparing for the holiday celebrations with our families and friends has come and gone in a blink of an eye, or so it seems. The tree and its decorations are put away and the house feels extremely bare. Once again, we are consumed by the quiet that surrounds us and we think to ourselves, how can this be January 2020, wasn’t it just…??? That’s when we begin to wander back to the Januarys of the past, remembering when the New Year brought us so many unexpected pleasures. Those pleasures became the treasures that we hold dear in our hearts today. Some of us will wander back and relive the times of our youth, while others will reminisce our later years.

As I am writing this, I’m thinking back to how the Januarys of my youth would bring those blizzards that would gleefully greet us each New Year. Here I am feeling all excited once again as I visualize the scene. Snowdrifts as high as the roof tops! Remember how the excitement would grow with each snowflake? Running from window to window and constantly checking the radio for school cancellations? Why was it that our school district seemed to be the very last one to be called off? (Did Foster, Glocester ever go to school in the winter?) The anticipation was unbearable! Then finally, after what seemed hours, we heard those words that were magic to our ears. “School is cancelled for tomorrow!” Let the fun begin!! A New Year holds promise, the unknown, the unexpected… we enter into it with a feeling of hope that our lives will be blessed

with all good things! Although each New Year will bring along with it some unpleasantness, we know from our life experiences that we have “no control” over what obstacles we will encounter in 2020. That my friends, is a good thing! We cannot allow ourselves to think about what might or might not happen tomorrow. We have to focus on each new day and surround ourselves with people that fill those days with lots of love and laughter. Let the positive, warm, loving, pleasant, memories of the past be the fuel that energizes your outlook as we enter into the New Year. Hug a little tighter, visit a little longer; take time to play a little more. Listen to your heart and let it lead you. Play, love, laugh, dwell on the positive and 2020 will bring you the memories that will become the treasures that lead you through each new day.

Model Native Garden At Del Tura Info Session

A model native garden is in the works for Del Tura. If the Villages can have one, why can’t Del Tura? I became excited about the idea when Fred Taylor offered a plot to develop right to the left of the gatehouse. That empty parcel could become a marvelous model garden to feature designs for residents to use for their own home garden. And why not Florida natives? In a time when we have plummeting bee and bird

populations this is a small thing for us to do to bring back some of their food supply. Natives provide berries, pollen, and beauty for our birds, bees, and us. They are easy to grow; they don’t need water or fertilizer so what’s not to like. There is a lot more to it so I won’t go into detail here. Our first step will be to learn about the plants. When we understand their role in the ecological cycle

we will see how beneficial they are in our environment. Come and learn at my 1 hour presentation, “Florida Native Plants” by Rosemary Eiden, retired Horticulturist. It will be held after the January 21st coffee in the main room of the club house. I hope you can join me in this endeavor to bring a model native garden to Del Tura! Rosemary Eiden rosi5632@att.net

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS POISONED BY This article appeared in the A BUFO TOAD.

Tower six months ago. However, we were sad to learn that two more dogs died after their encounter with these frogs. Therefore, we thought it was important to print again. A common threat to south Florida dogs is poisoning from Bufo marinus, the giant or cane toad. This species of toad produces a pasty yellow- white toxin in the parotid glands, which extend from the head backward over the shoulder region and is released through pinhole openings in the skin. When a dog mouths or bites a Bufo toad the toxin is released and rapidly absorbed across the mucus membranes of the mouth. Symptoms of Bufo poisoning occur suddenly and may include profuse salivation, vocalizing and pawing at the mouth, brick-red gums, incoordination or a stiff gait, difficulty breathing and the intoxication can rapidly progress to seizures and death. The severity of the poisoning depends on the size of the dog and the amount of toxin absorbed into the bloodstream. Puppies and small breed dogs such as Dachshunds, Mini-Pins, Jack Russell Terriers and Miniature Schnauzers are more seriously affected because they get “more poison per pound” than a large breed dog. Bufo toads are most active in the spring and summer months when it is warm and moist outside. They are also nocturnal, therefore most poisonings occur in the evening, late-night or early-morning hours. Poisonings can happen very quickly and even dogs being leash-walked have been known to grab a toad and be poisoned

Step 1) DO NOT PANIC!!! You need to be able to think clearly and act quickly to help save your pet. Panicking will only keep you from acting properly! Step 2) IMMEDIATELY rinse the dog’s mouth out with a large amount of water using either a hose, kitchen sink sprayer, shower sprayer or water bottle. Rinse the mouth from side to side. DO NOT DROWN THE ANIMAL BY FORCING WATER DOWN ITS THROAT. The toxin is very sticky and may need to be gently rubbed off of the mucus membranes of the

mouth. Be very careful so as not to get bit by your pet. Even the gentlest animal may bite if it is scared, in pain or having a seizure. Step 3) Calmly transport the dog to your veterinarian for further care. PLAN AHEAD! Save time in an emergency by preparing now. Keep the phone number of your veterinarian by the telephone. Since most poisonings occur at night CALL FIRST to make sure that the hospital is open, don’t waste time driving to a closed facility. Keep the phone number and address of a nearby emergency clinic near the phone too, in case your regular veterinarian is not available.

There is no specific antidote for Bufo-toxin and treatment consists mainly of supportive care. The toxin can affect the heart causing it to beat in an irregular pattern and hyperthermia (body temperature greater than 105 degrees) may develop from seizuring. Intravenous fluids, cool-water baths and anti-arrhythmic drugs are all used in the treatment of Bufo intoxication. So what can you do to prevent your pet from being poisoned? First of all, learn to recognize what a Bufo toad looks like. Adults can be as large as 6 to 9 inches in length and have brown, or gray-brown warty skin. Younger toads are much smaller but just as dangerous. Bufo toads are ground dwelling animals. Do not confuse them with tree frogs, which have suction-cup feet and may be found crawling up the side of your house. Bufo toads live near water such as ponds, canals and swimming pools. Search your yard in the late evening for them. If you have just moved to a new neighborhood, ask a neighbor if the toads inhabit the area. In addition to eating insects, small animals, snakes and vegetation, Bufo toads are especially fond of pet food. You can avoid attracting toads to your yard by not leaving bowls of dog or cat food down on the ground. If you live in an area inhabited by Bufo toads, you need to be especially careful. Direct supervision while your pet is outside is crucial and may prevent a tragedy. If you have a fenced-in yard you can make it harder for the toads to get through the links by putting chicken-wire fencing along the bottom edge.

One-Tank Trips By Bette Ewing Cheney Let’s explore the joys of nature. We live along the perfect pathway to see and experience the Everglades, which is a huge area of tropical wetlands and forests at the southern tip of Florida. This enormous area is home to wildlife from alligators, panthers, manatees, and

large flocks of tropical birds… to name a few. Visitors can hike, kayak, fish, and spot wildlife, and one of the best options is to take a trip on one of the many airboat charters available. If you have never ridden on an airboat, you must put it on your bucket list because it is a thrilling experience. One such tour is Captain Jack’s

Airboat Tours in Everglades City. There you can also combine an airboat tour with a swamp buggy ride along with his alligator show. You can purchase tickets online at reduced rates and the park is open 365 days a year from 9am to 5pm. Now is a great time for our trip because the weather is cooler. Have fun!

Save Our Strays By Sherry Plisch Save our Strays is still partnering with A Roof for Roofus Rescue. They have helped us in the past, by fostering and adopting out, some of our kittens. They have a way that we “can” help them find homes for homeless pets in our area. They are asking you to save your clean, empty soda, beer, pet food and tin cans so that they

can take them to be recycled. They will use the money they get for recycling the cans to feed and house homeless pets (dogs and cats), until they can find their “furr-ever” homes. Cleaned cans may be dropped off at 821 Via Del Sol on the right side of the driveway, close to the garage. This program is not only good for the animals, but also good

for our earth. Thanks for your help. Meow and Woof!

MEET YOUR HOA BOARD OF HOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION DRAWS COMMUNITY INTEREST

As seen elsewhere in this TOWER edition, the upcoming election has drawn widespread community interest. Currently there are seven candidates for three positions. Nominations will close after the HOA January Members Meeting. Voting is only open to verified HOA dues paid members. Members interested in running for the HOA Board of Directors may complete an application prior to the January Members Meeting or be nominated from the floor at that meeting. Nominations will close at the end of that meeting. The Nominating Committee will manage the election process. After the nominations are closed the committee will prepare the ballot. Here is the process you should expect: All candidates will be given the opportunity to speak at a Tuesday Coffee Social Hour, January 14th, 2020. The candidates will also be invited to participate in a Meet the Candidate session following that Coffee Social Hour. All candidates will be given an opportunity to speak to the membership at the January Members Meeting, January 8th, 2020 at 7pm. Each will be allowed a maximum of five minutes A list of candidates will be posted on the HOA clubhouse bulletin board following the January Members Meeting and the close of nominations. Ballots will be mailed during the week of January 19, 2020 and must be returned by the 15th day following the mailing. A return envelope will be provided. Ballots may be mailed or returned as instructed in the ballot package. The ballots will be numbered, counted and verified. The results will be presented at the Annual Meeting in February and posted on the HOA bulletin board for the following two weeks.

ALBERTA (BERTIE) DUGU

GAIL HODGE

ARTHUR KEEN

My name is Alberta (Bertie) Dugo and I am running for the HOA board. I have been a full-time resident of Del Tura for the past 5 years and before that a snowbird for 3 years. I live at 4088 Avenida Del Tura and have the most gorgeous view of the green on 3 North. I never dreamed that retirement and living in Del Tura could be so wonderful. Before coming to Del Tura, I lived in another gated golf community and it could not compare to the friendliness of Del Tura. One of the reasons I am running for the board is that I believe it is important to give back to the community by volunteering. I spent 50 years of my life in Boston, MA. I graduated with a BSN from Boston College and a MSN from Boston University. I worked 46 years as a Registered Nurse with 30 of those years spent at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. There most of my work was in Management. I feel my management skills and ability to follow through on any project will enable me to perform on the board. In Del Tura, I am a member of the 18-hole Women’s golf league and also enjoy cooking, gardening and Mahjong. I would be honored to serve on the board if elected.

My name is Gail Hodge and I have been a full-time resident of Del Tura for three years. Before that I had been visiting my husband, Larry’s parents, Chick and Anna Hodge since 1990. Over one of those visits I had shared with them how much I loved it here in Del Tura and that I could live here someday. That someday arrived and I do love this community and the people that live here full and part time. I’ve watched Del Tura ebb and flow with the economy and the change of home ownership. One thing that has stayed constant is the unity and friendship among the residents. This is only one of the things that make it a great place to live. Vote for me, so we can keep it a great place to live. Let’s go back to an HOA that its purpose is to support the residents of Del Tura.

My parents moved to Del Tura in 1993 and I have been visiting ever since. It was my obvious choice for relocation when I retired. This provides me with insight into our past as well as the present. I believe I can help to make the experience the best it can possibly be for all residents no matter what those residents’ interests and participations are. I am not just committed to the immediate job at hand but have been and will remain committed to helping out in many other aspects of the community. I know how to get along with people and will work with my colleagues to make a difference.

REMINDER: IF YOU PLAN TO VOTE NOW IS THE TIME

Proficient at business management and fund raising—former CEO/ HOA President. Want to introduce some new fundraisers to help fund HOA charities and functions. Implementation of a better HOA software notification system that would allow for more effective communication delivery to all members and prospective members, while preserving the TOWER. Implement volunteer help programs for our elderly who can’t afford or are unable to maintain their property. (Yard work/ maintenance advice.) HTA rate increases/ HTA capital expenditures should be more transparent to all members and residents. The HOA needs to represent all members and all residents. Want to promote and expand HOA membership. I believe that compromise is the key ingredient for a successful Association.

ROBERTA (BOBBI) LESLIE

LIZ PONIATOWSKI

JIM STENZEL

I have held various positions over the past years that I feel will strongly help bring some benefits to our community: Associates Degree in business. Certified Municipal Clerk/Comptroller, City of Oakbrook Terrace. Owner/CEO, Remington World Travel, Hinsdale, Illinois. Currently working with Taylor Resort Homes, Florida My background has been mainly in accounting, business practices and the travel industry. Over the years I have run a successful business in corporate travel with a solid client base. Became an elected municipal clerk and sat on several appointed boards as commissioner (Zoning, Planning) during a time when the community was growing profusely. Most importantly, I feel my greatest accomplishment is in “common sense” which no amount of education could supply and was taught to me by my husband. I will bring to the board a variety of skill sets in the hope to continue to develop Del Tura’s Homeowners Association.

I’m Liz Poniatowski and I am running for a seat on the board to be YOUR voice in the community. Change is inevitable. Changes are needed and HOA MEMBERS have the power to make them happen. I’m vocal, a self starter and a Libra so I’m not one sided. I weigh both sides of a situation and do what’s best for the majority. With a ‘can do’ attitude, knowledge of the situation and support from the community we can make the positive changes needed to continue to make Del Tura our forever Paradise. Vote for YOUR voice!

Things I’d like you to know about me: • 7-1/2 year resident of Del Tura • retired Project Manager/Technical Specialist for Xerox Corporation (42 years) • completed 3-year term on the HOA board (2013-16); VP and liaison to Sound & Lighting • served on Statutory Committee for 7 years • provided technical support to Sound and Lighting • maintained operability and content of LED Billboard • volunteered many additional hours supporting other Del Tura efforts/activities Board members must be acquainted with the state statutes and legal documents that govern the HOA’s existence and operation, and stipulate the community owner’s rights and obligations as well as the rights and obligations of our residents. Over time however, we have lost representation on the board of individuals with more than a casual understanding of these critically important documents. I hope to restore some of that knowledge, to help assure that board deliberations are legally informed and that the HOA’s relations with Hometown America are productive and of maximum benefit to all residents.

Del Tura Bowlers “Strike” It Rich! After six weeks of bowling we have two teams who have taken the game to a new height. They actually take pride in winning! People, this is a fun league. Don’t humiliate your opponents. Why, I take pride in throwing at least one gutterball a game to make my opponent feel good. Okay, maybe some of that was said with “tongue in cheek”. It had nothing to do with those “great” bowlers being way better than me! In first place with a 35-7 record is 2 WARRIORS made up of Linda Laird, Joan Whaley, Gary Cromer, and Chuck Hokey. I think the warriors are Linda and Joan! In second place is 10 PINS with a record of 30-12. Their team members are: Janet Ragone, Marionela Tamayo, Jim Aull, and your president Dave Csuy.

Our top players are: Denise Rose 174, Janet Huss 172, Diane Smith160, Mary Kato 146, MaryKay Tointon 145, Tom Demshak 178, Chuck Hokey 173, Paul Smith 171, Dan Larson 166, Leon Buss 157 We were off from December 17th through December 31st. Play resumes January 7th. I want everyone to know that between substitutes and team players we total sixty bowlers who are the most amazing group of people Del Tura has to offer. Everyone is so very, friendly and enjoy the game as well as having fun. Laughter is truly abundant in the Del Tura bowling league! Respectfully Submitted Glenn Tointon VP

SPORTS & EXERCISE 18 Hole Women’s Golf Association TEE OFF TIME By Margie Blackwell Happy New Year! Our league was very busy in 2019, and we expect that to continue throughout 2020. Here are a few highlights since the last Tower. New officers The 18-hole ladies held their holiday luncheon in December, which included the installation of new officers for the upcoming year. We had so much fun and the food, prime rib prepared by Nick’s Restaurant in Del Tura, was excellent. Sandy Vassallo is our new President and I will serve as VP. We are grateful that Bertie Dugo will continue as Secretary and Sherry Leverre as Treasurer. And what would we do without our volunteer chairs. The following ladies have agreed to serve for another year - Kay Rolader as

Welcome Chair and Bobbie Asper as Rules Chair. Pat Bedard volunteered to serve as our new Tournament Chair and we are looking for a volunteer for Handicap Chair. Many, many thanks to our outgoing officers, Paula Lafreniere and Peggy Deems, for all of their efforts and the many hours devoted to our Association! And a big thank you to Debbie Overholser and Lynne Miller for their contributions the last few years as Tournament and Handicap chairs. Hole in one In November, Sandy Weddleton had a hole in one on 6 North. And it was her first one! Congratulations to Sandy! Tournaments/Events Our club championship was held in December with 25 ladies participating. This was a 3-day

tournament in which we played all of the courses (yes, we included the North course even though that meant playing 4 and 5 North!). Look for the winners’ names and photos in next month’s Tower. There are a number of upcoming events in January including the Jack & Jill and Member Member Tournaments (January 8-9 and January 29-30). Also, the annual Awards Banquet will be on January 11th. Get your tickets in the Pro Shop as it will be a great night to celebrate both the Women’s and Men’s Golf Associations. Thank you, Carol Marra And last, but certainly not least, we all give a big thanks and shout out to Carol Marra who has been writing our Association’s contribution to the Tower for the past seven years. She has kept us informed, made us laugh and provided so much information about the activities of our league. Thank you, Carol, and we hope that you now have more time to spend on the golf course! Any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me at (239) 728-7548.

SoftBall News at Del Tura By Art Keen Happy New Years Amigos backers and welcome to the month we start the season. Big news! We will have TWO teams to root for this season. The two time champion Amigos will be playing for the three-peat and their new cousin the Diablos will make their Mark and Mary Ford League debut this season as well. Managed by Herb

Hopkins the Diablos figure to be right there in the thick of things. Of course, our new team will need its own rooting section (since both they and the Amigos will be playing their games at the same time.) so this is a community wide invitation for fans. The games will be The first game of the season is Del Tura vs Del Tura at 6:45 on Monday, Jan 6th. (they are doing maintenance on the fields

so we have to double up games that week). Wednesday, the 8th has Diablos playing Pine Lakes at 6:45 and Amigos playing Lake fairways at 5:30, so come on out to Carmelita field in Punta Gorda and join us. Stay for a doubleheader on the 8th of January. Until then remember, “You can observe a lot by watching.” –Yogi Berra

Holiday Golf Cart Parade 2019 By Linda Storma I would like to thank all the parade participants who did such a great job decorating their carts this year! We had 27 carts and 1 decked out Prowler that did the hour and one-half parade and many, many residents and their families and guests who cheered us on from carts, driveways and parties along the way.

It was a lot of fun for all of us and we really appreciated the encouragement and it looked like you all enjoyed yourselves as well. 1st Prize-Dusty and Ed Laurie Penguin, Abominable Snowman and Rudolph with Igloo 2nd Prize-The ‘Wilkersons’ with “Santa’s stuck in the chimney”

3rd Prize- Terry Thompson and her Mom “Night Before Christmas” Honorable mentions were: The Mancinos with their Prowler The Biddingers with the Alligator pulling their sleigh. I’d also like to thank Nancy Adams for helping get things ready for us, Jim Stenzel and Gerry Benjamins for helping people with

lights, our secret judges (you know who you are) for the hard decision it was to choose the winners, and whoever the elves were who picked up the Starlight Ballroom for me when I went back to do the work. A special thanks to Santa and Mrs. Claus - Dave and Judy Zink, new residents who stepped forward to play that important role and to their elves...Al and Wendy Wells,

Jilly Dodds and Jeff Czuchaj who came out and helped put the sleigh together. Also thanks to Jacqueline Keen for sharing her props and, of course, the HOA which always supports any efforts that make our residents happy. So here’s to a New Year filled with Peace and Joy and Love... and may we continue to find it here with our extended family in Del Tura. HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

Del Tura Creative Writer’s Workshop By Nancy Davy Our meeting dates for January are 1/9 and 1/23, from 2:00-3:30 pm in Card Room #1. Spa Monday Dorinda Doyle Today the spa door is propped open, infusing our now dry November air into the familiar heavy aroma of acetone. Welcoming smiles. “Would you like a glass of wine?” “No, thank you, I have brought some water.” Water. I settle into the recliner and slip my feet into the warm whirlpool bath. Feet that ache after working three twelve hour shifts in the past three days. Forty years a Registered Nurse have taken a toll, and these feet and lower back have paid the price. Massage. I sink into the recliner and program the kneading mode. Gently I am pushed forward and back as the kneading pressure begins to untie the knots in my lower back. Air. I close my eyes. Taking a deep breath in through my nose and exhaling slowly through pursed lips…the hit of oxygen laced with acetone clears my sinuses and is not unpleasant. I hear the whirr of the hot jets tickling my toes and the muffled banter of clients’ cheerful conversations in the distant background. A tap on my leg disturbs my bliss. One foot up out of the water, then the other clipping, buffing… then my feet and lower legs are wrapped in swaddling hot steaming towels. I close my eyes again… It is Spa Monday. Off to Tai Chi Karen Brennan I approach a white door and step out of my kitchen. A light

automatically illuminates the garage. I touch the opener and the door moves noisily upward. I turn my attention to our car. Today it’s clean and shiny; the dark, charcoal color and lines look sleek. The door opens easily, then closes behind me with a soft thunk. I sit for several seconds, realizing that indeed this is a solid vehicle – I do enjoy driving this car. My body has relaxed into the comfortable bucket seat. My hands move forward to touch the smooth steering wheel. I see tones of dark brown and beige leather along the front dashboard, and I sense a slight lemon fragrance from a recent car wash. This vehicle has a fresh, clean feel to it. I am relaxed and happy here. Slowly, I stretch out my leg and depress the brake. I touch the ignition and the car quietly awakes. I see lights and colors in front of me. These familiar illuminated signs reassure me that the vehicle is ready to move. Now I’m also aware of the soft sounds of classical music from the Sirius stereo. I glance at the back-up camera as the car slowly reverses out of the garage. I push a button to close the garage door and notice that I am alone on the street. I slip a mint into my mouth and momentarily savor its fresh flavor. The shift knob again feels comfortable in the palm of my hand as I move it to drive, then quietly proceed down our silent street to my early morning Tai Chi class. An Event! Barbara Jones The phone rang. After answering and talking for a few exciting minutes, I was anxiously looking forward to Saturday. After I found a parking place on Saturday, walked at least a mile in a party atmosphere and smelled the delicious food being prepared

Our Del Tura Creative Writers Workshop is doing great! We currently have 10 contributing members, and an additional new member currently working on his first assignment. We have answered five challenges and are currently working on our sixth. The following are submittals for the fifth challenge, which is to “tune in” to our senses by spending a few minutes sitting in silence with your eyes closed, and use your sense of hearing to record sounds, your sense of touch for tactile sensations, sense of smell for fragrances or odors; even your taste, if applicable. Freewrite what you observed. Spend a few minutes just looking, then write what you see. Hope you enjoy !

on grills, I arrived at the first destination of the day…my tailgating friends. Everyone was in a festive mood as we ate, talked, laughed and prepared for the big event. Soon we heard the band start playing and that was our cue to move on. Once we were inside the stadium and found our correct bleacher seats we were entertained by the other fans, cheerleaders and band members. It was not long before the real entertainers appeared. When the football teams, coaches, and officials took the field for warmups we started thinking and talking about what could really happen today. Reality began as soon as the official indicated and the defending team kicked off. For the next several hours, the only important things are what happened on the football field. The first half was very frustrating. There were turnovers on both sides; a few first downs but no scores. I fired my Head Coach twice and revoked the quarterback’s scholarship three times. Things turned around during the second half, and I rehired the Head Coach and gave the quarterback his scholarship again. We acted like we know how to play football and therefore we WON!! Another exciting Saturday afternoon!

cures of prostate and testicular cancers along with support for men’s mental health programs. This year’s campaign included distribution of more than 300 moustaches for donations, a garage style sale in the parking lot (aptly named Junk in the Trunk) with 33 stalls “rented”, and The Sixth Annual Moustache Ball, a 50’s - 60’s themed dance. Del Tura’s favorite group BRYLCREAM entertained more than 250 nostalgic party goers.

Once again the residents of Del Tura have proven their spirit of giving. “MOVEMBER”, the month long November funds drive to support men’s health awareness, was a HUGE success, raising more than $6,800 gross! The event’s planners had set an ambitious goal of raising a total of $6,000, however, that is the net of expenses amount sent to The MOVEMBER Foundation.
