Many of you are not aware of USAA Auto and Home Insurance specifically designed for veterans AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS: spouses, brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren, etc. I can attest to the fact that the savings are substantial (for myself and my family) since becoming a member several years ago. FROM THE BOARD by Lou
By Lou Dunning, President - loudunning2@gmail.com, 239-240-5847
As many of you know, this will be my last ‘From the Board Room by Lou’. I have chosen not to run for re-election. I am honored to have represented the residents of Tara Woods for the last 8 years. I started on the Board as a Director at Large, then Vice President, and the last 4 years as President. It has been a privilege to work with the many Board members through the years and see their dedication to and hard work for our Community. Thank You! The residents who step up and chair and serve on your HOA committees, along with the social clubs and groups, are a genuine pleasure and make me
proud of the fabric of our Community. Their counsel and friendship are irreplaceable. Thank You!
A special thank you to my wife, Pat, who has helped in so many ways. Thank You!
During my time on the Board, I have had the opportunity to deal with eight Community Managers. (Can anyone name all eight?) Each Manager respected your Board and our professional approach to dealing with major projects and everyday contacts.
I have accepted the appointment as President for District 7 of the FMO (Federation of Manufactured Homeowners of Florida). District 7 encompasses all of Lee County, with 18 manufactured home communities. The FMO advocates on our behalf through the State Legislators, and works to protect the rights and interests of manufactured homeowners.
HEADS UP – Volunteering is a willingness to give back to our Community. Volunteering can enrich your life and help bolster our Community. DID YOU KNOW THAT – you can check out the minutes of Saturday Morning Coffee on your TWHOA website.

Time for New Year’s financial resolutions
Now that the calendar has flipped, it’s time for some New Year’s resolutions. You could decide you’re going to exercise more, lose weight, learn a new skill, reconnect with old friends — the possibilities are almost limitless. This year, why not add a few financial resolutions to your list?
Here are a few to consider:
• Reduce your debts. It may be easier said than done, but if you can cut down on your debt load, you’ll increase your cash flow and have more money available to invest for your future. So, look for ways to lower your expenses and spending. You might find it helpful to use one of the budgeting apps available online.
• Boost your retirement savings. Try to put in as much as you can afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. If your salary goes up this year, you’ve got a good opportunity to increase your contributions to these retirement accounts. And once you turn 50, you can make pre-tax catch-up contributions for your 401(k) and traditional IRA. You might also want to review the investment mix within your 401(k) or similar plan to determine whether it’s still providing the growth potential you need, given your risk tolerance and time horizon.
• Build an emergency fund. It’s generally a good idea to maintain an emergency fund containing up to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. Without such a fund, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as an expensive auto or home repair.
• Keep funding your non-retirement goals. Your traditional IRA and 401(k) are good ways to save for retirement — but you likely have other goals too, and you’ll need to save and invest for them. So, for example, if you want your children to go to college or receive some other type of post-secondary training, you might want to invest in a tax-advantaged 529 education savings plan. And if you have short-term goals, such as saving for a wedding or taking an overseas vacation, you might want to put some money away in a liquid account. For a short-term goal, you don’t necessarily need to invest aggressively for growth — you just want the money to be there for you when you need it.
• Review your estate plans. If you haven’t already created your estate plans, you may want to do so in 2025. Of course, if you’re relatively young, you might not think you need to have estate plans in place just yet, but life is unpredictable, and the future is not ours to see. If you have already drawn up estate plans, you may want to review them, especially if you’ve recently experienced changes in your life and family situation, such as marriage, remarriage or the addition of a new child.
Because estate planning can be complex, you’ll want to work with a qualified legal professional.
You may not be able to tackle all these resolutions in 2025. But by addressing as many of them as you can, you may find that, by the end of the year, you have made progress toward your goals and set yourself on a positive course for all the years to come.

DAY OF CARING REPORT
By Chris Olson, Chairperson for
the Day of Caring
As of December 9th, 2024, you have donated $10,922.00, which is truly amazing considering the two hurricanes we had this fall, and the price of everything going up. Through all of this, you just gave and gave. Each dollar you gave made someone’s day a little better. I delivered checks of $4,000.00 to each of the charities we support in November. The donations given to the Fort Myers Rescue Mission went towards a Thanksgiving dinner, to not only the ninety residents, but to hundreds of homeless families who they feed each day.
The Elizabeth Kay Center, run by Catholic Charities, gave gift certificates of $20.00 to 200 families to be used for their Thanksgiving. The Holiday 4 Heroes donation will continue to help active-duty military members and their families, as well as Vets right here in the Fort Myers area.
We will have enough to give another $1,000.00 to each charity this week. Remember, both Pine Lakes and Lake Fairways also donate. I will have the final results next month.
Again, thanks to all of you and Blessings.

The Frankie Cirell show brings Las Vegas to Tara Woods the way it used to be in the 80s and 90s. How we miss all the singing, impressionists and comedy from the good old days. Well…miss it no more because this one man, a seasoned dynamo will bring all your great memories back to life in one night! Frankie has mesmerized his audiences all over the world. Trust me when I tell you that you will want to see this unbelievable, most entertaining show. Frankie has always gotten rave reviews and won best act in Atlantic City five years in a row.
In the 60s, a group called the Duprees were a Jersey based recording group with big hits. Frankie Cirell joined the group and toured with them from 1972-1975. In 1972, he was on Soul Train with the group which sang “Check Yourself”, a well known hit of the time. Since then, he continues to entertain professionally year long. During his show, you never know which celebrity might appear on stage.
So, come see the show. Put your seatbelt on, and get ready to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience. Tonight, you are not only getting to see a great show, you are also donating to a worthwhile cause—helping to cure pediatric cancer.

ENTERTAINING NEWS
So, Ladies and Gentlemen…a new year and new opportunities for you to continue to do what makes you happy, and if you haven’t yet discovered what that is, that you find it this year.
Our set will begin construction early in January. If you are interested in helping Ron Proulx and team, please let him know; I am sure he will appreciate your help, especially in getting the lumber from the maintenance shed to the Clubhouse. Then again, after the play is over, the following Monday the set is torn down; help is needed to tear down and to return everything back to the shed.
Normally our plays are the second weekend in March, but this year due to the Tara Woods Cruise, we had to move it up to this earlier date. Thank you everyone for all of your help in our productions.
We are getting closer to the dates of February 21st, 22nd, and 23rd – which is when we put our production of “Saint Peter’s Escort Service” on stage for your entertainment. Be sure to mark one, or all, of those dates and join us. A live play is made up of three parts; all three parts are needed for any of the three to work – the parts are (1) the play, the words that are spoken, (2) the actors, the humans that speak and act out the words, and finally (3) the audience, the humans to hear, feel, and react to the words and actions on the stage. Throughout
Pat Dunning, Stage Manager for
the world this is a common bond that all live plays have, no matter if they are serious dramas, or senseless comedies, no matter who is doing the acting. Theater is an alive thing that only comes alive when it is seen by the audience. So please join us. We are eager to have you in our audience.
The tickets are on sale beginning January 18th. They will be available at Saturday Morning Coffee and before Bingo on Tuesday. Also, the tickets will be available at the door for each performance. The price this year is $10.00 per ticket. If you have any questions about the tickets, you can contact Polly Brown or myself. We have theater seating (which is up front near the stage) and we also offer tables to sit at. During our productions we cannot allow food or drink in the Clubhouse. There will be ushers at the doors to help you if you need assistance in getting to a seat.
Please remember that everyone who helps with our productions, and, in fact, anything that goes on in Tara Woods, are volunteers. We volunteer because we thoroughly enjoy helping the community we live in. The way to show our appreciation to all the volunteers is to attend the events that go on in the Community. Stop the volunteers when you see them and say “Thanks”.

PICKLEBALLERS ARE BUSY!
Yes, the Tara Woods Pickleball Group is very busy. There are pickleball games being played almost every morning on the Tara Woods Pickleball Courts, when it’s not raining or snowing.
We are busy preparing for the first 2025 meeting of the Pickleball Group on Thursday, January 9th, from 5:00-7:00 PM, in the Clubhouse. As usual, there will be food involved, but what that will be has not yet been determined. All group members who are paid up for 2025 will be notified shortly after New Year’s Day.
We are busy preparing for the third annual Tara Woods Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, February 8th. Register to play by contacting Alice Loveday. There’s no minimum level of ability required, just an ability to play pickleball. Lunch will be available for a small fee. This is a major tournament with significant implications for international rankings! Ok, maybe that is a tiny bit of an exaggeration, but the winners do get trophies, and their names recorded permanently in the Clubhouse Card Room! You don’t play pickleball? Feel free to stop by to see what all the whooping and laughter is about! The fun will be plentiful!
We were busy preparing for the Christmas Day Potluck on December 25th and sponsored by the Pickleball Group. This event began in
2023 to give Tara Woods residents, who have no family or friends in town, an opportunity to get together with other residents on the holiday. By the time you’re reading this article, this event will have occurred and over 100 residents will have been a bit less lonely on Christmas Day. We just want to give you something to think about if you’re alone in Tara Woods on Christmas Day.
We are busy preparing for the next Tara Woods Pickleball Round Robin tournament. This event is held on the last Sunday of each month, except in the summer months. The event starts at 8:00 AM, so players must be present by 7:55 AM to play. If you don’t want to play, feel free to stop by to watch and enjoy the fun. Don’t be late, though. The games go quickly, and each tournament is often finished in an hour or so.
We are busy preparing for the 2025 calendar year, which starts with the collection of dues which are only $5.00 per person for the entire year. What is that money used for? If you play on the Tara Woods courts and use the balls which are freely available there, you should know that those balls are supplied by the Pickleball Group using the dues money. If you have family or friends visiting and they use the paddles available in the cabinet,

POKER, ANYONE?
LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 239-246-2391, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.

lost 1 set. As we headed into the Thanksgiving break, our record stood at 5 wins and 7 losses. Our final preseason matches were held in December. We hosted the Herons Glen Blue Team and the Lake Fairways Ace Gators. We traveled to Six Lakes to play the Six Lakes BBC team. Those results will be reported in the next issue of The Columns.
Our “Official Competition Season” starts in January. We do not play on January 9th because we have a bye. We do have a home match with the Pine Lakes Blues on January 16th. We enjoy seeing you at our tennis matches. ~ Tony Gless

Depending on the number of tennis players showing up to play, we may use only two courts. However, sometimes we have players on all four courts. The players are rotating in and out all the time, so you get to play with some people who may be stronger than you –or you may get to show off your good serves or your great style “at the net”. It’s always interesting – and a lot of fun.
If you have an interest in playing tennis, come give it a try. ~ Linda Engel

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY FAIR
Saturday, January 25th, 2025 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
The TWHOA Board of Directors invites you to participate in the fourth Opportunity Fair to publicize your group and invite new people to join.
On Saturday, January 25th, 2025, the Board will sponsor a “Community Opportunity Fair” from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Tables will be available for you to talk with prospective members and pass out whatever information you think will attract new people. We urge you to decorate your table however you wish, provide refreshments, prepare hand-outs, and be inventive in “selling” your group to new members, whether they be new residents, current residents, or renters. We urge you to be creative in providing a fun and informative atmosphere for this “Fair”.
This event is open to ALL clubs, groups, sports, games, etc. in Tara Woods. Our goal is to fill the Clubhouse and all adjacent rooms (Card Room, Billiard Room, Library, Meeting Room, Veranda, if necessary) with groups advertising who they are, what they do, where and when they meet, etc., to provide information and opportunity to all residents of Tara Woods. The Board will publicize the event and provide tables, chairs, easels, raffle tickets, coolers, etc., on a first-come, first-served basis. Please fill out the attached form and return it to Joanne Glandorf to reserve a table and show your commitment to this project. The reservation form will also be available on the TWHOA website.
We hope you will give this serious thought and participate in this important and fun event. The deadline to reserve a table is Wednesday, January 15th. If you have any questions, please call or e-mail Joanne Glandorf or Celia Blotkamp at the numbers below. If you would like Celia to speak about this event at one of your meetings, she will be glad to help.

SOUND & LIGHTING PRESENTS
VINTAGE VINYL
The annual professional entertainment show made possible by the Tara Woods Sound & Lighting Committee will be VINTAGE VINYL this coming January, on Saturday the 18th, at 7:00 PM in the Clubhouse. As usual, there will be both theater and cabaret (BYOB) seating. All tickets will be $20.00 per person, but reservations are needed for the cabaret tables.
VINTAGE VINYL is a performance by Drew Pournelle. Drew is a New York City vocalist who sings vintage vinyl favorites from one of the most dynamic decades of music: 1965 to 1975! The music of this exhilarating era reflected its changing times, and Drew Pournelle captures it all on stage. Sharing his nostalgic, personal
connection to the music, Drew also brings to life the joy and fun of this daring decade with tunes from classic rock bands like Three Dog Night (“One” and “Joy To The World”), Grand Funk Railroad (“Some Kind of Wonderful”), and Chicago (“Saturday In The Park” and “25 or 6 to 4”) to iconic solo artists, such as Tom Jones (“Delilah” and “It’s Not Unusual”), Elvis (“Suspicious Minds”), and Barry Manilow (“Mandy”).
The memories will come flooding back as new ones are made when audiences of all ages sing along with Drew Pournelle during his highenergy concert event! Come join the fun for a great night out and a very enjoyable concert.
