President’s Korner…

Thanks to all who congratulated and wished me success as new President of the HOA Board.

Your comments really made me feel inspired. The Board has been working closely with Fred to improve our community. New street signs are coming and will be installed soon. The North Pool Facility renovations have been completed with freshly painted new steel doors and frames for the changing rooms. Many other repair and renewal projects are under on-going negotiation. I will keep you informed as they are completed.

Del Tura is our home and we should take pride in our community and its amenities. When you go to the pool areas, please remove your trash from the tables before you leave. If you have to move a round table at the pool, please do not tip it up and roll it. The round table edges have been destroyed

by doing this and pool area tables have been replaced twice now with new ones by Hometown. Thanks to efforts by determined community members and your HOA Board, Hometown has provided us with a very nice dog park facility, one for large dogs, and one for small. That being said, the commons area at the south end of the Tierra Entrada lake is no longer to be used as a dog park. The sod there has been replaced three times because of damages due to dogs and golf carts parked there while people let their dogs do their business. If we expect Hometown to do their part in maintaining our community, we must do our part in taking care of what we have.

March roared by with spectacular events and performances thanks to efforts by our tireless volunteers and their committees. Del Tura volunteer groups offer boundless activities for our

residents. If you haven’t looked at the activity schedule, check it out. Join something new. It’s an opportunity to enjoy yourself and to meet new friends.

Spring is my favorite season of the year. Nature is dressing up our landscape with trees in green and flowers in bloom. It’s a good time to spruce up our houses and check for any maintenance needs.

We recently had our house pressure washed and uncovered some rotten wood at the ends of several eaves. Small problems are easier to fix than big ones.

Enjoy yourself. Sing in the shower. Compliment a neighbor.

Hug your spouse. Buy an ice cream cone at Sylvia’s. Eat some jelly beans. Come to an entertainment event. Have some fun!

Recipes for happiness: Look at the glass half full, not half empty. Smiles are contagious!

What Should You Do With an Inheritance?

If you were to receive a sizable inheritance, what should you do with it? This money could help you achieve some of your important financial goals – so you’ll want to think carefully about your choices.

Of course, everyone’s needs are different, so there’s no one “right” way to handle a large lump sum. But here are a few suggestions that may be useful: Pay off some debts. Depending on the size of your inheritance, you may want to consider paying off some, if not all, of your debts, such as car loans, personal loans and student loans. You might even consider paying off your mortgage, but you may not want to, as you might be able to get a better return on your money by investing it. Also, if all your money is tied up in a house, you’ll typically have less liquidity than you would get from your investments.

Contribute more to your retirement accounts. You may now be able to afford to contribute more to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, as well as to your IRA. These accounts offer tax benefits plus an array of investment choices, so they are excellent ways to build resources for retirement.

Save for college. If you have children, or grandchildren, whom you would like to someday send to college, you might want to put some of your inheritance into a college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan, which provides tax benefits and gives you great flexibility in distributing the money.

Build an emergency fund. If you haven’t already built an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, you may be able to do so now, using part of your inheritance. Keep the money in a liquid, low-risk account, so that it’s readily available to pay for unexpected costs. Without such a fund, you might be forced to tap into your long-term investments.

Above all else, you may want to get some help. If you don’t already have one, a financial professional can recommend ways of using the money to help you meet your goals. For one thing, you could further diversify your investments, which is important, because diversification can help reduce the effects of market volatility on your portfolio. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t prevent all losses or guarantee profits.)

And a financial professional can help you determine how much your plans could change due to the inheritance. To name just one possibility, you might be able to move up your retirement date. If so, you’d need to adjust many aspects of your financial strategy, such as when to take Social Security, how much to withdraw each year from your retirement accounts, and so on.

You’ll also need to consult with your tax advisor, because some inherited assets, such as an IRA, could have tax implications.

Your loved ones worked hard, and probably invested for many years, to leave a legacy for you. So, to honor their memory, do whatever you can to handle your inheritance wisely.

Good Timers’ Singles Club News Today, you can choose to take a step back, a step forward OR try a brand-new path!

In March the Good Timers’ enjoyed our monthly birthday luncheon at the Fountain Grille.

Peg McTernan always takes on the task of setting this one up and she makes it a combination birthday/St. Patty’s Day celebration. Thanks again Peg for an outstanding job! We also attended our first play, “Ripcord”, at the Cape Coral Cultural Park Theater on 31 March. More than half the club came out to enjoy this one!

In April our weekly game day will be held on Monday’s. Even if you’re not a Good Timer we would love to have you join us.

Everyone is invited. We play various games between 1:00 and 4:00 in the Royal Palm room. Bring your spare change. Some games are played for nickles, dimes or quarters just to keep it interesting.

April 4th we have our annual road rally, a scavenger hunt through Del Tura. We’ll be in our golf carts so look for us...and, if we ask, please feel to help us find our treasures!

First team back to the clubhouse finding everything gets rewarded.

Then we all will sit around, enjoy pizza and compare notes about the items we had to find (and couldn’t). Our first Pot Luck, Slim down for Summer, will be held on 18 April in the Royal Palm Room.

And on 28 April we’re looking forward to lunch and a play, Second Chances the Thrift Shop Musical,

at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater. It’s a busy month for us. If reading about all this interests you why not join us. Don’t be a Good Timer “wanna-be”...take that first step and ‘try a brand-new path’.

Continue to check our bulletin board outside the Pub area to see what’s next on our “Save The Date” listing! Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month.

Socializing begins at 4:00 in the Jacaranda room and the meeting starts promptly at 4:30. Hope to see some new faces at our April 2nd meeting. All single Del Turian’s are encouraged to join us at one of our monthly meetings to see if this is something you’d like to pursue.

“Remembering the Pleasantries of Childhood”

As we age, we seem to lose the ability to see things as clearly, or as lighthearted as we did through our childhood eyes. For some reason our vision becomes blurred and I’m not talking cataracts here. It is more like we put blinders on and deny ourselves the opportunities to be our own authentic selves. Sadly, we forget that it’s okay to find humor in those things that tend to frustrate us on a daily basis. Lord, I can’t explain why as we get older we do, or we don’t do the things that have always been routine. For example, we can remember song lyrics from the 60’s but we can’t remember where one of five pair of our glasses could be. (I think you’ll find them on top of your head, like I do!) Or maybe you’ve walked into the kitchen and then you can’t remember what you needed there. It’s all good! Just count it all as part of the 10,000 steps that we’re supposed to be walking each day. Now that should make you chuckle!

Seriously, why isn’t it okay to relax and feel the way we did as children? I know so much has occurred in our lives to make us a little bit cautious, but those things

shouldn’t stifle us and prevent us from thinking and feeling some of those emotions that make us feel young and uninhibited, like when we were care-free children.

How long has it been since you laughed until your belly hurt? It’s been awhile for me, too! When we were youngsters the smallest things would make us giggle. We

Maybe it was the innocence of the age, or not knowing any better but for the most part it sure was the happiest times of our lives.

We learned many things as children. We learned how to laugh at ourselves and with others. We learned how to play fairly with each other and accept loss. Our friendships were golden and if some of those cherished friends are still with us we are truly blessed!

Think of those times when we just sat next to each other on our front porches sharing stories and

playing games. Worries, we had none! Responsibilities, yes but they were mostly chores that we somehow got done before Mom or Dad came home from work and we didn’t even worry too much about that. Sure there were consequences if those chores weren’t done but we accepted them. We knew what was expected of us and clearly understood when Mom or Dad said, I don’t care what the Jones’s do in their house; this is what is expected in our house! You listened and did not question for fear that you would be punished and not be able to spend time with your neighborhood friends for awhile.

There are so many precious memories of childhood. It was not only the things that we did but also the things that we felt as we went through those “wonder years”. Whether we were feeling the excitement of catching fireflies on a warm summer night, or skating on the local ice pond on a cold winter afternoon the feeling was exhilarating! Maybe we can’t do all of those things we did as children (maybe the fireflies, but don’t try the ice skating, please) but we certainly can try things that will make feel good, alive, and most of all make us laugh!!

By Ginnie Benjamins, On Thursday, March 7, 2019 a large group attended a luncheon at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre to celebrate their work as volunteers for FISH of Del Tura.

At the luncheon were volunteers from all over Lee County. Margaret Baugher, RSVP Lee Director (Retired Seniors Volunteer Persons) hosted the luncheon. A group of Calendar Girls performed to loud applause. Three FISH of Del Tura volunteers were honored as working 400 or more hours.

They were Rich Symes, Betty Scheetz and Ginnie Benjamins.

Then Margaret talked about the person who was to be awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Award for the past year. She read the nomination submitted by Betty Scheetz, administrator of Del Tura’s FISH. It went like this: “When they say someone has a heart of gold this lady’s name is on top of the list. She always has a smile on her face; she has a crazy sense of humor and a good word for everyone. She is a breast cancer survivor and organized the walk fundraiser for many years.

She tackles all she does with gusto.

She is our transportation chairperson, one of our directors and she organizes our holiday baskets that we give to 18 of our residents each Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you want someone to find the bargains call her. She whips up our baskets with a cost of less than

At the Hydrant DEL TURA’S DOG OF THE MONTH : VIOLETTAH My name is Violettah and I am a nine pound, black and white Shih Tzu who celebrated my 13th birthday on March 30th. My owners, Barbara and Susan had a little Shih Tzu like me that crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2006 (the year I was born) and they were very sad. They were in New York that summer and wanted to have a Shih Tzu to try to love as much as they loved Lilac. Each kennel they called said “we have no undersized black and white females, and don’t expect any soon”. One sent a list of 20 Eastern Seaboard Shih Tzu Club members. 19 of them had no pup or even a “senior” Disheartened, they called the 20th number, but that breeder said, “Wow you are in luck, I have on 5-month old, b&w, female that I was planning to

show, but she is too small.”! The breeder asked where they were living and they replied, “New York”. “Oh, I’m very sorry, I don’t ship pups. But thanks for the call and good luck.” “Thank you”, they said sadly, “and by the way, where are you located?” “Oh, I’m way down in Fort Myers, Florida.”

They were thrilled because they were leaving to come home to Del Tura that week. They fell in love with me at first sight, and I knew they were going to be perfect housemates- especially when I saw the color of their car and home- my favorite shades of purple!

My breeder, “purple Jade Kennels”, (Oh Yes!) wanted me to be a show dog, but I really wanted to be a fashion model. My owners were thrilled with that and even got me outfits and costumes for every occasion. Even though I’m blind now, I enjoy everything I do; especially sleeping in my purple bed the breeder gave me when I left. I get blessed at St. Therese Church on St. Francis Day and my owners and I are so happy that fate brought us together to live in Del Tura. Love and Wags, and Happy Easter to all my good friends!

Brad and Sylwia Mills gave up their jobs as an engineer and a nurse to start a dream about ice cream.

Many people may dream about ice cream but one couple decided to do more then dream. Sylwia’s (Yes, that is the correct spelling) ice cream is made with expertise, delicious flavors and love. On their grand opening day, which

was scheduled at 1:00 pm, Brad and Sylwia had first day jitters that maybe no one would come. At 12:30 there were only a few people waiting for the doors to open. But the owners and their employees said prayers and these prayers were answered when over 500 people came that first day. The shop bustled

with people talking and getting to know one another. Many customers have come back to try a different flavor or their favorite one.

We stopped in one evening after a show with friends and all of us fell in love with the shop.

There is a cozy fireplace with five chairs surrounding it. Many tables and chairs, colorful to make you believe you are in a European shop. Both Brad and Sylwia and all of their employees will greet you with much enthusiasm and they will let you try flavors before you buy. Gentleman who decide they would like their ice cream in a bowl get a colorful dish and ladies get their choice in a tea cup with delicate spoons. You can, of course ask for a cone.

They serve cones, dishes and banana splits. Anyway you want your ice cream. There are many toppings. I suggest you make this a nice end to the evening and try different flavors each time you go to Sylwia’s Ice Cream Shop.

Dear Friends...

It’s always hard to say Goodbye, but the “GOOD” with it is that something “New” is around the corner.

As you all know this is my last issue as the Tower Editor. I truly hope everyone enjoyed reading and the small changes we made over the last 2 years. However, over the last few months I’ve made some life decisions which will affect my availability of time.

After doing some soul searching, I decided since one of my true enjoyments in life is my nonprofit fundraising and helping the homeless; that the only way of making more time would be to give up producing the Tower.

I want to Thank all 101 wonderful volunteers who assisted me in getting the paper out each month. You

are all truly the heart of the paper and I truly appreciated your commitment. As for me, I will continue to enjoy living in our piece of Paradise in Del Tura for now. My mother Linda (Tower Distribution) will be moving back north and become a “snowbird”.

So, even though change makes us all nervous, for me this experience has allowed me to get to know and meet many Del Turian’s I may have never otherwise had the pleasure.

SPORTS Friday Shuffleboard League

By Jack Blevons Welcome to April & our Friday League is over with already. Don’t know where the time goes to but the days & months have flown by fast. I am writing this on March 10 which means we only have one more week to play in our league which means just 3-games left & the trophies race in both flights are still wide open. With the next 3-games being played will decide the top 3 teams in each flight for those trophies as well as the 4th place teams who will join the top 3-teams in the 8-Team tournament held on the 22nd of this month, meaning March. Anyhow, as of today the leaders in the flights follows. The “A Flight” leaders

are Ben Hargraves & Janet Blevons in 1st place with a record of 41/7. They are followed by Bob & Donna Crawford in 2nd place, 1-game behind at 40/8. The there are 2-teams tied for 3rd place & they are Chris Brylski & Buster Jager and also Marlene Eck & Judy Lessard with 34/14 records.

The “B Flight” race is just as close.

Kathy Boesel & Mary Pimental are in 1st place at 21/27. Ray David & Cam Smith are in 2nd place at 19/29 & they are followed by Joe Noto & Chuck Hokey in 3rd place at 18/30. Those are the standings as of today & by the time you are reading this, these naturally all can be changed, depending on next weeks 3-games being played. So, you will have to wait for the May Tower to come out to read how this all turned out as I will post all the trophy-winners in both flights as well as the Tournament trophy-winners. Will also write about our 15th Annual Bust-Up Party that will be held the last week of March. So, will be back in May. Hope you all have a great April.

It’s only the “pseudo” year end recap because publishing deadlines dictate that I had to submit this article prior to the actual end of the season. As a result we will take some literary license and talk about what we know.

– Yogi Berra enjoyed an exceptional season so far this year. Manager Stan Young said at the beginning of the year that he thought this year’s edition of the team was the best he has ever seen. So far the team is proving him right. After only losing 2 games all of last year and winning the Mark and Mary Ford League

Championship thisyears team is well on its way to eclipsing that accomplishment.

On a different note, I am sure both fans and team members had a great time at the annual Fundraiser and Bar-B-Que on March 9th. The weather was great for the indoor event and the entertainment and the food were beyond reproach.

It was a fitting way to thank our amazing fans for their yearlong support. I would like to also take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors as well. Without you our season wouldn’t have been nearly as successful.

On March 14 we had our final shoot-out of the season. Three qualifiers had been held over the last few months resulting in two flights of 20 golfers. A luncheon was held afterwards for all members.

What to do if you have damaged a club: Ever hit a root while trying to hit the ball? If the club appears bent, you may continue to use it for that round. You can even bend it back, if able. ( Good luck doing that!) In a different golf moment, while watching the pros, I saw two different golfers end up right next to a tree. Dustin Johnson could prove that he would have to stand on the cart path to hit while Rory McIlroy could not.

(Although he tried!) Dustin got relief and no penalty. Rory had to hit his out as best he could. If you thought March flew by, watch out for April!

SPORTS 9 Hole Women’s Golf Association This month’s highlight was the Member/Member tournament. The 2 day event was held on March 6th with “Best Ball” match and March 7th with “Play Your Own Ball” match. Then the scores were combined. No need to delay, the winners are shown below.

HOA-Sponsored Thursday Night Bingo

By Jack Blevons April brings the end to our HOA Sponsored Thursday Night Bingo as to how Janet & myself & our crew of volunteers run it during the months of October through the end of March. I’m really not positive but am thinking there will be bingo being run during the Summer months again like last year, by some other people on a lot smaller scale than what we run but the people running that are nice enough to donate their time all Summer long for those of you that still want to play on Thursday nights. A lot of us snowbirds head somewhere North for the Summer months but there are people here who still enjoy playing while we are gone. I think that’s really

nice of those people to do that.

We’ve had a good year again, attendance-wise. We start up in late October so the first couple of months are slow because all our snowbirds have not returned yet but by January it really picks up so the payouts get a lot better which everyone likes. We have kept our games simple & easy to play & have not increased prices to play now for 2-years. We will continue to keep the cost of games the same when we start back up on October 17th. . So, this being our last Tower letter until October

again, Janet & I would like to mention the names of all the volunteers who helped us run this bingo again by donating about 4-hours of their time every Thursday night so that our residents could come up to the clubhouse to enjoy playing bingo & also have hopes to go back

Mailbag “MOVEMBER” DONATIONS EXCEED EXPECTATIONS Once again the residents of Del Tura have proven their spirit of giving. “MOVEMBER”, the month long November funds drive to support men’s health awareness,

was a HUGE success, raising more than $5,850! The event’s planners had set an ambitious goal of raising a total of $5,000, however, that is the net of expenses amount sent to The MOVEMBER Foundation.

The MOVEMBER International charity uses the funds for research into the prevention and cures of prostate and testicular cancers along with support for men’s mental health programs.

This year’s campaign included distribution of more than 300 moustaches for donations, a garage

style sale in the parking lot (aptly named Junk in the Trunk) with 34 stalls “rented”, and The Fifth Annual Moustache Ball, a 50’s - 60’s themed dance. Del Tura’s favorite group BRYLCREAM entertained more than 250 nostalgic party goers.

AND THEY WERE OFF! Three hundred twenty-six enthusiastic Del Turians and twenty-five outstanding committee members galloped into the Starlight Ballroom to attend Del Tura’s annual Nite at the Races.
