Blessed are they who understand My faltering step and shaking hand Blessed , who know my ears today Must strain to hear the things they say. Blessed are those that seem to know My eyes are dim and my mind is slow Blessed are those that look away When I spilled tea that weary day. Blessed are they who, with cheery smile Stop to chat for a little while Blessed are they who know the way To bring back memories of yesterday. Blessed are those who never say “You’ve told me that story twice today” Blessed are they that make it known That I am loved, respected and not alone. And Blessed are they who will ease the days Of my journey home, in loving ways. Written by Esther Mary Walker Submitted By Dianne Roderick

Greetings everyone! I hope your summer is going wonderfully and you are enjoying traveling, family visits, and plenty of rest and relaxation. As you may have noticed, this is the first issue of “The Tower” under the direction of our new Editor, Kathy Aira. This monthly newsletter is a huge undertaking and I want to take this opportunity to recognize her for accepting this responsibility. I know you all join me in thanking her for volunteering and are excited about the future of this important communication piece under her guidance. Of course, I can’t write about “The Tower” without taking a moment to recognize Doris Meyer for her many years as our editor. Doris, Co-Editor Ginnie Benjamins and their staff did a fabulous job highlighting all the activities and events in our community, and recognizing all the great folks who make things happen for us. Doris is also stepping down as the Membership Director for our HOA and we owe her a debt of thanks for that
as well. That responsibility is now under the new Co-Leadership of Cindy Baron and Denise Rose. I want to extend my appreciation to both for accepting this new assignment. Special thanks to Rich Symes and his team for planning and implementing our Memorial Day Ceremony. Rich always seems to capture the emotion and spirit of the day, and this year was no exception, with moving speeches and a touching ceremony. Thank you to all who contributed and all who attended. Special additional thanks to World War II Veteran Don Anton for his remarks. May we never forget those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, as well as those who have and are continuing to serve our country. I would also be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to thank Linda Storma for the super job she did again this year with our 4th of July parade and festivities. As usual, the parade was great fun, the luncheon was excellent, and the games and prizes were exceptional. Many
thanks to Linda and all the wonderful folks who helped her. On a personal note, it is with deepest sadness that I note the passing of our fellow Board Member Ray Schmoltze this past May 10th. Ray was an active valuable member of our HOA family and we will miss his good counsel and guidance. Rest in Peace Ray. Finally, as we mercifully move through the rainy season, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their patience as our community “weathered” our horrendous historical drought. We all enjoy a wonderful quality of life here in Del Tura and when it gets disrupted for any reason, it can be tremendously frustrating. My thanks to each of you for your patience and understanding with the HOA Board as we worked our way through the “issues”. Regardless of the challenges, where I sit it’s still……….Just another day in paradise! Dave Adams HOA President

WHO’S FRED?? No, not the former Jacksonville Jaguars running back….It’s our very own Fred Taylor - General Manager of Del Tura, will have a special place in The Tower. Dear Residents, I hope everyone is having a great summer. From this point, I will be writing a short article for each issue of the Tower. As you already know, Del Tura is a wonderful place for many reasons. The Del Tura staff works diligently throughout the year to help preserve a positive environment for all residents to enjoy. Whether a long-time resident or a brand new one, I ask each one of you to spend a few minutes to review the community rules and
regulations from time to time. The entire community benefits from all residents being aware of the rules and giving their neighbors the courtesy of abiding by them. Unfortunately, as I write this, Del Tura is exactly like any other community in the sense that every community has a vehicle speeding problem. I would like to challenge each one of you to make a conscious effort to drive reasonably within the community. The posted speed limit is 16 MPH within the community. My hope is we can demonstrate to family members and guests who visit, that Del Tura truly is different from anywhere else. I can already hear what some are saying. Rest assured I will continue to follow up with ven-
Fred Taylor - General Manager of Del Tura dors and employees and expect them to do the same as I ask of you. Until next time, wishing everyone good health! Fred Taylor
FISH Fruit Tree Picking Project Fruit Picking Committee Activity: The committee would like to keep the residents appraised of our progress and to give the proper, well deserved special thanks to our resident fruit donors. Without these donors the needy of our community would not receive the fruit they need to supplement whatever diet they do have available to them. So, to date, (our picking season runs for the calendar year), the team has picked 2,514 pounds of fruit, consisting of Bananas and Mangos this year. For the month of June we picked 298 pounds.
This month we had 9 volunteers and we picked from the residences of Dorothy & Woody Cook, Suzy and Richard Roiger and Jeanne Racine. The fruit was delivered and distributed at the soup kitchen and was greatly appreciated. I wish we could predict the availability of the fruit to better utilize the 25+ volunteers we have on our committee. They’re eager to get going so let us know of any fruit to pick. Spread the word. There’s a lot of residents who are not aware of what we do. We would appreciate the help identifying potential trees that become available. Homes that are empty
or the residents aren’t here yet are possible sources for us to pick. We’ll seek the permission where necessary. We’re really proud of our residents for their generosity and concern! Since this report we’ve had more requests to pick residents’ fruit. Keep those requests coming! We’ll report on those as they are collected. Call Rick @ 543.3662 or Sherry @ 567.0538 – do NOT call the FISH number. We welcome back our seasonal residents! God bless and thank you very much! Rick Rudzik and Sherry Plisch – Co-Chairs

Book Review By Kathy Reichs
If you are familiar with the TV show called “Bones”, then you will know this author’s works and principal characters. Temperance Brennan (called Tempe by most who know her), is a forensic anthropologist and divides her time and work between Charlotte, North Carolina and Canada. She has been divorced for some time and is the mother of one child, Katy, a grown daughter. She has also been involved over a period of time with Andrew Ryan, a lieutenant-detective who resides in Quebec. At this time she is working in North Carolina and when approached by Hazel “Lucky” Strike about some bones that have been in Tempe’s position for some time that she believes could belong to
someone she is trying to find, the story begins. Hazel is a web sleuth and believes the bones can help her identify the missing Cora Teague. She arouses Tempe’s curiosity and although there are plenty of cases that she must deal with, she gets involved with the mystery that takes her to a rural North Carolina county in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She teams up with a deputy sheriff, Zeb Ramsey. As they go, they uncover buried bones that Tempe must identify with the question, do they belong to the missing person that Hazel has presented? She meets a variety of interesting folks including members of the Cora Teague family, all of whom belong to the “Church of Jesus Lord Holiness.” While also dealing with the cases that arise in her actual place of work, she is dealing with a marriage proposal from Ryan, missing her daughter who is in the army
and deployed in Afghanistan, and being very involved now with all the bones that are uncovered in a variety of sites. As the story unfolds, Hazel is found dead and Tempe’s life also hangs in the balance. This one will keep you turning the pages!

Stay Calm on the Investment “Roller Coaster” Unless you live near an amusement park that does a lot of advertising, you probably didn’t know that Aug. 16 is National Roller Coaster Day. Actual roller coasters provide people with thrills. But as an investor, how can you stay calm on the “roller coaster” of the financial markets? Here are some suggestions: •
Know what’s in front of you. If you’ve ever ridden a roller coaster in the dark, you may find it scarier than if you boarded it in daylight – after all, it can be unsettling not to know where you’re going. The same can be said about investing: If you have no idea what’s in front of you, you might find the journey unnerving – and if that happens, you could make panicky decisions, which are usually bad ones. So prepare for the inevitable market volatility – it’s a normal part of the investment landscape.
•
Buckle up. When you’re on a roller coaster, you need to buckle your seat belt or use a restraint. You want to have the excitement of the ride, but you certainly don’t want to take unnecessary risks. And you can enjoy some of the excitement of investing without incurring more risk than you are comfortable with, too. One way to lower your risk level is to diversify across a range of investments – stocks, bonds, government securities, and so on. That way, if a market downturn primarily affects just one type of investment, you’ll have some protection. However, although diversification can reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t protect against all losses or guarantee a profit.
•
Choose a strategy for the journey. Different people have different ways of handling a roller coaster ride. Some like to throw their hands up, enjoying the feeling of abandon, while others hold on tightly to the bar in front of them. When you invest, you also need a strategy that works for you, and the best one may be the simplest: Buy quality investments and hold them for the long term. How long is “long term”? It could be 10, 20, 30 years or more. Famed investor Warren Buffet says his favorite holding period is “forever.” If you’ve chosen a mix of quality investments appropriate for your risk tolerance, you may be able to hold them until either your goals change or the investments themselves undergo some transformation.
•
Stay for the whole “ride.” When you hop on a roller coaster, you’ve got no choice – you’re staying until the ride is over. As an investor, though, you can exit the investment world whenever you like. But if you take a “time out” from investing every time the market drops, you risk still being out of the market when it rallies – and the early stages of a rally are often when the biggest gains occur. Furthermore, if you keep investing during a “down” market, you’ll be buying shares when their price has dropped, which means your dollars can go further – and you’ll be following one of the basic rules of investing: “Buy low.”
You can’t take out all the twists and turns of the investment road, but by following the above suggestions, you can help make the ride less stressful – and possibly more rewarding.

Thanksgiving & Christmas Baskets
RED HAT SIZZLERS
The Red Hat Sizzlers Are Looking For NEW Members. If you are interested in joining us for lunch, please call Lynne Mack at 543-4084 (after 10:00 a.m. please).
The Thanksgiving & Christmas Baskets are an ongoing Community Event for the past 37 years. This event provides food and gifts for Needy families in the North Fort Myers/Fort Myers Area. Most recently (last 6 years) there have been 70 families that have benefited from this community activity. It should be noted that all the needy families are identified and screened by Nations Association Charities. Activities begin in the October time frame, with the distribution of flyers, requesting food and/or money to be donated. They are distributed to every household in the community. These flyers also identify the volunteers that will come by to collect these donations and when. A few days before Thanksgiving, boxes are packed with all the donated food as well as food purchased by the committee. These boxes are then picked up by Nations and distributed to the needy families.

In December, flyers are again distributed to every household in the community, requesting donations of food and/or money. However, in addition to food being given to each family, the Committee also purchases gifts for each person, in each household. On average there are 350 -400 gifts required. A few days before Christmas boxes are packed with all the food as well as the gifts are wrapped and put into boxes for the individual families. As at Thanksgiving, these boxes are then picked up by Nations and distributed to the needy families. As can be imagined, this is a very large undertaking and requires the help of many volunteers. Listed below are the tasks that volunteers are needed for: • Handing out flyers and collecting the donations at both Thanksgiving & Christmas. The Thanksgiving collection will start Tuesday, Oct. 24, and the Christmas Collection will start on Friday, Dec. 1
• Packing of boxes. Thanksgiving @7pm on Friday, Nov. 17 and Christmas @7pm on Dec. 19 • Wrapping of the 350-400 presents @noon on Sunday Dec. 17 • Staging the packed boxes at the curb and loading them on to Nations truck @7AM on Nov. 18 & Dec. 20 Anyone willing to participate in this great/satisfying cause please call anyone of us. Del Tura Save Our Strays S.O.S.

What we do: • We trap the cats or kittens in humane live traps. • A volunteer drives the cat to be spayed/neutered to one of the cost-effective vets or centers. • The cat is checked for a microchip. • The cat is spayed or neutered. • The cat is given a long-term rabies vaccination. • The cat gets the left ear tipped. • The cat is given a dose of flea medication. • The volunteer drives the cat back to Del Tura, to a “sick bay” to recuperate for 2 – 3 days. • The “sick bay” volunteer monitors and feeds the cat while there.
• A volunteer drives the cat back to the trapping location and releases the cat back into the Del Tura colony, to live out its days.
What does it cost for the Vet Services: Chip check, Spay/Neuter, Rabies Vaccination, Flea Meds, and Ear Tip
Total for these services is approximately $38.00 per cat. This total does not include volunteer time, baiting and checking traps, cleaning traps, tending the “sick bay” post-surgery, travel time or gas to and from the vets. Since the new committee took over in May 2016, we have successfully Trap/Neuter/Returned (TNR) 33 cats and kittens as of June 30. Thank you, Del Tura, for your help with our Bake Sale and Dinner and Donations of cat food and money. Whatever you have done, Thank You so much for helping us Save Our Strays! PS. FISH News
&
By Ginnie Benjamins One of our board members, Garnet Fleming, who is our secretary, became very ill while visiting her family. The FISH family is sending good thoughts and prayers her way. I hope you will join us soon. Here we are in the hottest days of summer and FISH is continuing to drive people to their appointments, lending medical equipment to those who need it, sending “Get Well” cards and calling you on your birthday. Just call our FISH phone line (997-3474) if you need a ride. Giving us at least 24 hours is a must. However if you know you need a ride next week call us right away. It will give us plenty of time to find a driver for you. As you can imag-

Thank you Linda Storma for the wonderful Fourth of July day you planned. The parade was huge and the poker run was fun. The lunch was yummy and the games were great. Finishing up the day in the Starlight Ballroom with Bingo and large awards for the winners was entertaining. Linda, you rock! Once again, Garnet, we are thinking of you.

ine quite a few of our drivers go north for the summer. We often receive calls from children of a resident asking us to help them with their medicine, making sure their parent eats three meals a day, or to help them bathe. FISH members are not trained to do any of this and we are not covered by insurance either. In our “The Tower” there are often ads placed by people willing to do these jobs. I also saw an “In-Home Personal Care” ad called The Visiting Angels in a local medical newspaper. Please remember if you do seek to employ any of these in-home people that you must do your homework first. Just because the ad may come from The Tower do not assume that it will be okay. Check it out first!

By Kathy Aira Foster’s Grille, we found it to be an extremely casual and friendly place. The staff is wonderful and Friday evening they had a DJ outside by the unbrella tables. The atomosphere brings you back to those wonderful high school/ college years “hanging” at your favorite burger/ ice cream joint. Foster’s has good old wooden booths and where you place/ pay for your order at the counter. It has wonderful “Pub” type food…The Best Charburger I’ve had
in a long time! The burgers are made fresh and just the way you like them cooked. They have daily specials, Mondays are senior days with 20% off. They also offer great wings and beer batter fish (yes, even a salad for those who have the need to eat greens). Foster’s always has coupons available (check out those coupon books!)…Lots of buy one get one 50% or definitely check out the website for daily specials. We visited Friday evening and had quarter pound burger meals with unlimited soda for only $4.99. Those with a sweet tooth, can enjoy their thick shakes. So, for my casual friends, I truly recommend Foster’s Grille for lunch or dinner!

Thank You
Well another Independence Day has come and gone and I look back with gratitude to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make it a success. First to Doris and Bob Meyer who called immediately and volunteered to co-chair with me and to Ginnie Benjamins who is always my biggest supporter and the person who tries to keep me on track as well as the person who sold the tickets. And Nancy Adams who is there every time I turn around with whatever I needed. Al Wells handled all the promotion, Jim Stenzel the sign and Ray Connolly who made the tickets. Thank you to all of you. There was a team who got the games and supplies from storage and did the decorating. Nancy again, Dorothy and Garry Biddinger and Barb Schmoltze (they also ran games) and Gerry Benjamins. Ken Bracker directed the Parade line up, Kay Nezamis who put the signs on the cars and carts as well as ran a game, Wendy Wells who I saw also decorating carts with Kay as well as running a game and as HOA Treasurer handled all the money for us and Bill Nezamis who was the official photographer. Staying under the radar were the judges, LeRoy and Sue Hall. Also thanks to Henry Moreau who did a great job getting all the Veterans for us to honor in the parade. And a very special thanks to the Veterans themselves! We had a great lunch provided by THE BROWN BAG of North Fort Myers. They are the same people who catered the Spaghetti dinner that we all enjoyed. Kitchen volunteers were headed up by Sandy Boykin and assisted by Pat Casillo, Bette Ewing-Cheney, Barb Schmoltze, Karen Stevenson and Ruth Anten (who also gave out prizes with her husband Don at the Carnival) In addition to the people noted above for games, thanks to Susan Baron, Jackie Tortaro and Dorothy Cook. Bart DeGraaf handled the golf challenges with help from Rod and Maureen Monroy, Ron Fluet, Bob Deems, Marlene DeGraaf, Floyd Light, Bill Kelly, and Mark McDermott. Bart also ran Bingo with help from Jim Stenzel, the caller Bobbi Leslie, with Sherry Cottini and Sandy Boykin. The Poker run was lead by Jan Hoffay with help from her husband Tom, Mary Maxwell, The Benjamins and Noreen McLaughlin. And the free popcorn? Thanks to Rich and Sue Symes for that added touch. And if I missed anyone I am truly sorry. Last but not least; thanks to Hometown America who gave us a donation again this year and to our own HOA who also supported us as usual…monetarily and in every other way. NOW FOR NEXT YEAR: Erv and I will commit to another year of July 4th festivities. What we are asking is for several people to take over for the following year (2019) but to help us out in 2018 as “interns” to see how we put it together so they can learn before they are in charge. We’ll walk you through it then you can change anything you want to make it your own. Please call 997-9066. THANKS!

By Dianne J. Roderick Today as I reflect on life I can’t help think of how different the times of our lives were back then. How those very special moments would have played out differently if we had been introduced to the technology of today, specifically the cell phone. Please don’t get me wrong! I realize the advances in this field have been necessary and have an important place in our lives. For example, advances such as Skype and Face Time have allowed us to connect with our loved ones who live far away from us. I’m talking about how those pleasant memories of the past, interrupted by the constant ringing of a cell phone, would have altered our recall or, possibly changed how we felt at the time. As I think back about what true communication meant before the invention of the cell phone I think about Human Communication as being where two or more people would converse eye to eye, and in that we saw and felt the emotion of another human being. In the flesh- not some electronic tool that relies solely on our verbal sounds! How can we expect to change direction in our world if we don’t encourage face to face human interaction? It is out of control and is happening in all age groups. Many people have no regard for others: in cars, in stores, Dr.’s offices, and in our churches. Does everyone need to know the “intimacies” of another’s life? Can’t it wait? I wonder what is left to say to someone when you finally see each other face to face. Remember how we use to pass the time sitting in a waiting room of a Dr.’s office, or stand-
ing in a long line a few years back? We had a choice of keeping to ourselves, quietly reading, or conversing with others. When we chose the latter we were often pleasantly surprised by how small our world actually is! Many times we found out that we had many things in common: mutual friends or shared hobbies. Somehow it
made our wait time less and left us with a good feeling. Think back on those most enjoyable moments of your lives. What made them so very special? We were totally in the moment-no interruptions- enjoying our friends and our families. Whether we were sharing an ice cream cone, or taking a walk on the beach we knew that we were communicating our thoughts and our feelings. You felt it and so did they! Human interaction! No cell phones to put a wedge between those unforgettable times. As I was going through some of the most precious times in my life I thought of a time when my Dad took me out fishing one late afternoon many years ago. I was so excited! You see being the only girl between two brothers it wasn’t something that happened very often; in fact it was a rare
outing. It is definitely a memory that plays out in my mind as if it were yesterday. There we were trawling along the shore line in the dingy, the water was calm and the fish were biting. I felt so special…I had my Dad all to myself! We talked and Dad shared his fishing stories as I sat and listened to every word. It didn’t matter that all that I caught was an eel. (Dad made me throw it back into the water) The most important thing was our time together-the human interaction….face to face and heart to heart without the sudden unexpected ring of the cell phone to interrupt this special moment. So the next time that you plan special moments with a loved one: whether it’s a leisurely walk on the beach, or a pleasant lunch- think about turning that cell phone off. Make those moments truly meaningful! Living life in the moment, socially interacting with others that are there with you within the course of the day requires more than the senses of speech and hearing. True communication needs face to face interaction in order for it to be truly meaningful. One needs to feel what is being said in order to make it a true heartfelt memory.

“W-D–L–T” Radio Record Hop Saturday, August 19th – 7:00pm in the Starlight Ballroom
Do you remember those great Friday night dances you went to when you were a teenager? Maybe it was held at your school… or the community center? You and your friends would have fun socializing and dancing to the attest hits, played by a DJ from your local radio station! Well, Del Tura is turning back the clock for you and your friends for a social event that goes back to those fun-filled days. EVERYONE is invited….couple and single alike…for an evening of fun, nostalgia and dancing. Our DJ is Del Tura’s own Dave Adams and we’re calling our station “W – D – L – T”! You probably know Dave as the Director of our own Choralaires. Over the years, Dave has amassed a record collection numbering in the thousands. His background in radio and rock and roll goes back to the 1960’s. As a young man, he performed on the traveling circuit as a keyboard back up for some of the top entertainers of the era. Later, Dave worked professionally as a Disc Jockey and Production Director for “W-E-E-X” AM and FM in Easton, Pennsylvania. More recently, Dave was the owner and manager of “W-K-T-F” Radio in Vienna, Georgia. On Saturday, August 19th, Dave will host an old fashioned “W-D-L-T” Radio “Social” and “Record Hop”, featuring the great music of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s…. everything from Rock and Roll to Country. Come to dance or just to have fun and make some memories.

LIVERPOOL LIVE LIVERPOOL LIVE is Florida’s top rated Beatles Tribute band. They are true entertainers, not just a scripted show. They will ask you to clap to the music, sing to the music and dance to the music. Their performance is spot on! Here is the difference from the others: They will involve you and present you with secrets and stories about the Beatles and their songs. Their performance is exciting and captures the wit and humor of the Fabs. What was the Beatles; first number 1 song in the USA? (they will ask). These are just some of the things that these entertainers bring. Yes, this is a full costume show. The music is a note for note copy of the Beatles’ music. Even their instruments are duplicates of the Beatles gear. members of this group include past cast members of Disney’s Epcot in Orlando and Beatlemania. This group has played it all from corporate shows to SOLD OUT theaters. Liverpool Live is a group of truly professional entertainers that will completely involve the audience! You will love the music and love the new spin on performance.
