TOWER EDITOR REPLACEMENT
From the President’s Desk… SEASON’S GREETINGS the music of “Take 2” and some “Movember”. Again this year, Christmas would never get here. really cool costumes, it was a Bart’s tremendous work on behalf Now, regardless of which holONE AND ALL….. Well, it’s easy to see the busy holiday season is rapidly upon us again this year. Good friends are returning from the north, and the activities calendar is once again getting full. One sign for me is the number of speakers we have now each Tuesday morning to speak of everything from Bingo to our annual holiday food drive. I continue to be amazed at all Del Tura has to offer. I want to take a moment to thank several folks who have gone above and beyond in recent weeks. One of the dangers in doing so, is that often folks who deserve recognition are missed. Such could be the case here, since there is simply so much going on continually. My apology in advance if I miss an individual or event. First, my thanks to our Entertainment Committee for a fun filled Halloween Dance. With
fun filled night for everyone. Thanks also to Wendy Wells, Kay Nezamis and their committee for an outstanding Craft Fair again this year. With a record number of vendors, an excellent lunch, scores of prizes, and excellent weather, it was an overwhelming success. Thanks to all who made this annual tradition the best yet. I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to especially thank Audrey Martin for our November Block party. This was a new event this year. The idea came from Sherry Cottini and her Welcome Committee. With numerous families throughout our community participating, the event afforded each of us a chance to get to know our immediate neighbors. As noted, special thanks to Audrey whose diligence and hard work paid off with a real success. Special thanks to Bart DeGraaf for yet another successful
of Prostate Cancer Awareness, put Del Tura squarely in the forefront of the efforts to eradicate this disease. The traditional dance and “Junk in the Trunk” sale were fun for all. Thank you Bart and the folks who assisted you for making this effort part of our activities. Finally, I most certainly want to take a moment to thank our veterans. On November 11th, Woody Cook chaired our annual Veteran’s Day Celebration and it was truly inspiring. We owe a great debt of gratitude to all our past and present members of our armed forces, and I sincerely appreciate Woody’s hard work to make the day special here in our development. It seems hard to believe that we are once again embracing the glad tidings of the holiday season. Recently, I was talking with several friends here in Del Tura and we remarked that when we were little children, it seemed
iday you celebrate at this time of the year, they simply seem to come and go faster and faster every year. Here’s hoping you have a joyous season, filled with friendship, fellowship and love. As always, from where I sit….. it’s just another day in paradise! Dave Adams HOA President
Unfortunately, Kathy Aira, our present TOWER Editor is resigning as Editor effective April, 2019. We are all very sorry to see Kathy leave, but understand she has other rewarding future plans. Questions to Ask When Considering an Annuity Like everyone, you want to retire comfortably – without worrying about running out of money. And that’s why you should consider every available source of income for your retirement years. One such source might be a fixed annuity – but is it right for you? A fixed annuity is an insurance product that can provide you with an income stream you can’t outlive, although payments also can be structured to end after a certain number of years. Your principal and interest rate are guaranteed, based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing company, and the interest you earn is tax-deferred and will compound annually until you begin taking income. These features are certainly attractive, but, even so, before you invest in an annuity, you will need to ask yourself some key questions, including these: What other sources of guaranteed income will I have available? One way to evaluate the value of an annuity is to determine what other guaranteed income you might have available during retirement. If you find that Social Security and any other sources of assured income, such as a pension, are enough to cover all or most of your essential living expenses, then you may not need any additional guaranteed income from an annuity. However, if these other guaranteed income streams aren’t enough to meet your cost of living, then you might want to invest some of your assets in an annuity. How much of my retirement funds should I consider putting into an annuity? You’ll need to determine the portion of your diversified portfolio that a fixed annuity should occupy, taking into account the nature of this investment – specifically, it’s a fixed-rate, income-producing vehicle. This means you’ll want a certain percentage of your portfolio in stocks, another in bonds, and still another percentage in the guaranteed income from an annuity. The exact percentages will depend on your age, proximity to retirement, risk tolerance and other factors. What are the issues I might want to discuss with a financial professional before investing in an annuity? As mentioned above, you will need to determine if, and how, an annuity meets your needs and how it fits into your portfolio. A financial professional can evaluate your situation and help you answer these questions, as well as inform you about other issues related to an annuity. For example, if you decide to tap in to your annuity earlier than planned, you probably will incur surrender charges. These charges decline each year, usually reaching zero after seven years. Furthermore, different annuities come with different fees, so a financial professional can help determine what options would best suit your needs. You’ll also need to be aware that while the interest you earn is tax-deferred, it isn’t tax-free. You will be taxed at your ordinary income tax rate once you start taking withdrawals, and withdrawals prior to age 59 1/2 may be subject to a 10% federal tax penalty. So, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor before withdrawing from your annuity. A fixed annuity could be a valuable asset during your retirement years. But, at the same time, it’s a big investment – so get the help you need to determine if you’re making the right choice. Anyone interested in running for the Board, should contact Bart DeGraaf for an application and formally submit it to Bart no later than December 10th at 12 noon if you wish to have your name and resume published in
the January issue of the Tower. Nominations can be received until the January Board meeting, however those received after December 10 at noon will not be included in the Tower.
Don’t miss out on the best value around. HOA dues are due by January 1, 2019 for next year. They are by calendar year. So if you paid in July, it was for 2018. Any dues paid from now till the end of December will be used for 2019. You can drop off your dues at the HOA office during regular business hours or you can drop them at the HOA table at Tuesday coffee. We are there at 8am!!
Because of the update of our computer program, we no longer need HOA cards. So you will no longer need to enclose a self-addressed envelope if you mail your check. Once your dues are paid, you are on our list and are all set for the year. Please don’t hesitate to contact either Cindy Baron or Denise Rose with questions. Our numbers are in the book and in the Tower.

Winter is arriving, soon it will be Christmas time, more and more people are returning to Del Tura. Welcome back! Winter, spring, summer and Fall…FISH is always here to service our residents. Whenever you might need a ride just call our FSH number (239-997-3474) and leave a message stating your name, telephone number, when and where you need to go. Please give us 48 hours ahead of time so we can find a volunteer to drive you. As soon as we have a driver you will be called by the driver to make final arrangements, such as what time you will be picked up. That way you will know the volunteer who will drive you. FISH volunteers use their own cars and their own gas and time. If you are having a knee replacement or any operation, don’t buy any equipment; FISH has a trailer full of any piece equipment you might need to aid you in your recovery. Again, just call the FISH number (239-997-3474) and leave a message stating your name, telephone number and what you will be need. If you cal l while you are still in the hospital the equipment will be delivered to your home before you are even released. And once again, the equipment is yours to use for as long as you need it and there is absolutely no cost to you. It is just one of many services that FISH offers in Del Tura. Speaking of the hospital, please let us know if you have been hospitalized (or have a friend call) to let us know when you get home. We know how exhausting a stay can be

At the Hydrant old now and i love my mom and dad and they bring me to the dog park twice a day where i have lots of friends and i get to kiss lots of people. My mom tells everybody to watch out for me because i can’t hold my licker, i’m not sure what that means but i sure like it here
DEL TURA’S DOG OF THE MONTH SHADOW
2/18
HELLO, MY NAME IS SHADOW O’HEARN AND HERE IS MY STORY. I was dropped off at the gulf coast animal shelter with 4 of my brothers and sisters when we were 8 weeks old. Every day people would come by to see us and leave with one of my siblings so soon i was all alone and lonely in this big cage. I had no one to cuddle with and i sure did miss them. One day a couple came by who had just lost their good friend harlie and were looking for a new friend. They stopped by my cage to say hi but soon left to look at other dogs, i barked and barked saying come back but they kept going. Then joe, who watched over me, came to get me and took me outside where the couple was waiting. They played with me for a while and i gave them lots Family Owned and Operated
of kisses and i heard the lady say “he’s not a girl and he’s not brown but he sure is cute”. Then joe came by to bring me back to my cage and i was very sad when i saw them walk by my cage and out the door. Joe came back in about 10 minutes and said “well patrick, i think today is your lucky day” and he took me to the front room where the couple was waiting to take me home. I followed my mom everywhere so she started calling me shadow. I’m 7 years

Holiday Cart Parade December 9th 6pm It’s time once again to DECORATE YOUR GOLF CARTS for one of Del Tura’s most fun Holiday traditions. It is amazing to see how creative our residents can be. Last year there may have been a little glitch…like the lead carts breaking down so no one had a map resulting in some missed streets. That won’t happen this year…Erv and Linda will be leading the parade and the 2nd cart will have a map as well. If you need help with hooking up lights, you may call Jim Stenzel 239-826-0524 or Gerry Benjamins 239-322-9866. It is up to you to get the things you need and to do the decorating…that’s half the fun! Don’t wait until the last minute for their help. We will have PRIZE MONEY for best decorations that night! Start planning early! The parade participants, and any residents who would like to join us, will meet in the Starlight Ballroom at 5:00 pm for a social hour and pre-parade camaraderie. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share and bring your drinks. We will have plates, napkins and utensils. The parade will begin at 6:00 pm. We also welcome bicycles, motorcycles, etc., whatever glows…goes! Enclosed in your Tower is a map with approximate times the parade will reach your location. (Also at all the pools). Note…the parade will end at the corner of Las Palmas Norte and San Gabriel this year. It’s a long parade and we lose most of the carts by then. So join in and have fun! For more information or ideas, call Erv or Linda Storma at 239-997-9066.

There’s always time for reminders about course etiquette; especially when visiting a new course. (Also for your home course.) It makes play more enjoyable for everyone. For a new course, read up on it before you play. Some sites that contain information about many courses are Golf Advisor or GolfClubAtlas.com. On all courses: Place rakes back in the right place. The usual place is half inside the bunker with the teeth down. This way the handle can be reached without stepping into the sand. Respect course signage. Most often signage indicates a wet spot,
native areas or is there to prevent unnecessary wear to the course. Pick up any liter you see. It’s just a nice thing to do; but you may need gloves. Be a golf course scout. If you see anything unusual or something that may pose a problem or a even danger; let the pro shop know. (Like Stumpy hanging out on a tee box!) Don’t be the hero to fix slow play. You’ll be better off to call the pro shop and ask if they would send out a ranger. Maybe the ranger will make it easier for you to “play through” or remind the group about “pace of play.” Once we were given another

course that was empty and ended up having a great round. Respect the entire staff. Everyone has a job to too. Be a good critic. Thoughtful criticism means taking account of the things you like, don’t like, and ways to make things better. I was always told not to complain unless it was given with a suggestion for improvement. Vote. After the round, take you judgements and post online for the public to view. You’ll be doing others a favor as well as the managers of the facility. These are just some simple gentle reminders. I’m sure each of you has more suggestions. Just have fun and hit them long and straight!

Writing this on November 6th, there really isn’t a whole lot to write about as our league just started playing it’s first week of league play last Friday, the 2nd. So I’m not going to post any standings until I write my letter for the January Tower. I would however like to mention the names of new members who joined our league this year as new teams. Patti Franks & Kathy are a team, Lynn Brenfleck & Bruce Blackmore are a new team. Ray David & Cam
Smith are a new team. Joe Noto & Chuck Hokey are another new team as well as Cathy Noto & Kathy Hokey being another new team too. So want to give sincere welcomes to these new members to our league. That gives us 20 teams this year which is a maximum we can be playing with. But, like every year we are always in need of people who would like to play as subs when we need them which is almost weekly. We do have a sub-list but if anyone who is new & would like to be a sub, you can call either myself or Janet

SPORTS 18 Hole Women’s Association by Carol Marra At the time of this December Tower, our three day Club Championship has been completed. The winners’ names will be posted in the Dungeon and appear in our January article. December is also our Member-Member tournament, on the 5th and 6th. We will end the calendar year with a luncheon and General Meeting on the 13th. New officers will also be sworn in at this time. As 2018 draws to a close be aware there are a number of rule
changes that will take affect in January. Most are designed to speed up play: things as simple as how you drop the ball when you have landed on the cart path or repairing spike marks on the green. Look online for other examples. Should there be a rule you find confusing (a confusing golf rule?) I am sure the Pro Shop will be glad to explain it! Two Holes-In-One! On June 9th, Mary Ciezadlo had a Hole-In-One on 6 North. This last October 7th, Peggy Deems had her ace on 8 South. Congratulations to both of our Members.
If you are new to Del Tura and interested in joining you can contact our Membership Chairperson, Kay Rolader at 292-4964 for more information. This time of year we really get to enjoy Florida at its best. The humidity and very high temperatures have left us. We are still not overly crowded. Enjoy this time; January will bring a few cold mornings and more golfers to Del Tura. And hopefully, more members to the Association.

“Christmas Magic” By Dianne Roderick Can you remember when you were between the ages of 5 and 7? The excitement of this time of year was at times indescribable! Trying to contain yourself each day as the holidays crept closer and closer wasn’t easy and we had to be oh so good! I don’t know there seemed to be a multitude of things that would heighten our senses during this time of our lives. You saw, you felt, you inhaled all of the smells and excitement of the season. I remember going shopping with Mom, not daring to let go of her hand for fear of being lost in the crowd. One couldn’t help to inhale the scents of those beautiful pine trees and wreaths. How they filled the air! They just seemed to add more excitement to this magical season. Those smells were still with me as I drifted off to sleep that night. The visions may not have been of “sugar plums” but they certainly added to how we envisioned what our Christmas would be like. I still remember a Christmas vision
that remains in my memory today and until this day it feels real to me. I was six years old and like any other child of that age was awed by Santa and the stories surrounding this jolly old soul. At that age you have many questions. What happens if it doesn’t snow? How will Santa get in? We don’t have a fireplace… so worried that he would miss our house! After much reassurance we finally relaxed and believed that Santa would find a way and all would be fine. Isn’t that part of the magic? That excitement whether a child of five or, ninety-five remains with you as you celebrate each blessed Christmas. As a young child I remember hearing stories about The Macy’s Santa and how there was a magic wishing star you could stand on as you waited to see Santa. Would you believe that I was forty-five years old when I finally made it to Macy’s? So many years had passed but I was just as excited as when I was five. It was amazing! So crazy in New York City at that time of year but doesn’t that go along with the season? I felt like
a child again, more excited than my sixteen year old daughter and her friend. I think that she thought that her Mom had lost her mind as we bustled through the crowd to watch Santa ice skate in Rockefeller Center. You know that vision that I was telling you about earlier, the one when I was six years old? Well I truly feel until this day it was real. I was awakened by a noise coming from our parlor, so I crept oh so quietly out of bed and peeked around the corner. There he was, that jolly man in the red suit placing our presents ever so gingerly under our tree. He didn’t see me but stopped for a moment to look behind him. I know he had to use his magic to get into our house! He had the bluest of eyes that twinkled just like the poem says. My older brother tells me that I am crazy until this day, but I still believe with all my heart that it happened. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? You have to believe in the “Magic of Christmas”. If you do you’ll always be young at heart! Merry Christmas Everyone!

POWER WASHING
Thursday Night Bingo Janet & I started HOA-sponsored Thursday night bingo on October 18th for the 2018-2019 season. We had a really nice turnout the first night but for whatever reason week two was a lot smaller turnout. This month as I am writing on November 6th, we had no bingo on the 1st. because of the craft-fair in the ballroom & on the 22nd no bingo because of Thanksgiving. So saying that, this month being December as you read this there also will be NO bingo on the 20th or the 27th, because of the Christmas holidays. With people both

on our bingo committee as well as you people who travel or have guests over the holidays we need to cancel bingo on those two Thursday nights. We are hoping that more of you come back & bring friends to our Thursday bingo. We have made all our games more simple & easy to play which makes it more fun to play too. The more people that come to play the bigger the payouts will be for all the games we play. The minimum cost per person is only $6 which gets you to play 10-games in that $6 packet. You can also spend more to get a 2nd half-packet or buy Specials at $4 for a set of two. There are two game on each “Special” sheet and all of the money taken in gets paid out. There are also free tickets given out for special drawings & also other $1 tickets you can buy for Hot-Ball prizes & also $1 tickets for Share the Wealth drawings. So, like what I normally spend is the $6 packet, two special tickets, A Hot-ball & Share the Wealth ticket which

comes to $12 to play 14 games of bingo. A pretty cheap night of fun & a chance to come home with some money. If you want, like many do, is to also buy the half-pack for another $3 & also you can buy more Specials if you want to increase your chances of winning. That is totally up to you. But, like I said, I think $12 is a pretty cheap night of having fun with a good chance of taking home more than what you came with. Doors open at 6:00 when we start sales & close at 6:45 so we can start playing promptly at 7:00. No more sales after 6:45 because cash & prizes have to be tabulated before we start play at 7:00. State rules dictate you have to be 18 to play & no alcoholic beverages are allowed in the bingo hall. Soda & water is available to be purchased while we play in the hall. Normally without any problems while we play, we are normally done by 9:30. We have a good committee of volunteers again this year solely for the purpose of allowing you to come & have fun & try your luck at winning. We have winners every week so if you come, you can be one too. We hope to see you there.

HOUSEHOLD HELP/HINTS FOR EVERYONE • Flexible Vacuum: To get something out of a heat/air register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vaccum. It can be bent ot flattened to get into narrow openings. • Measuring Cups: Before you pour sticky substance into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the water but don’t dry the cup. add your ingredient (like peanut butter) and watch how easily it comes right out. • Foggy Windshield: Buy a chalk eraser and keep it in the glove compartment of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser...works better than a cloth! • Reopening Envelope: If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place the envelope in the freezer for an hour or two... it will unseal easily. • Goodbye Fruit Flies: Take a small glass and fill it with 1/2 with Apple cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. Flies are drawn to the cup then gone. • Get Rid of Ants: Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it home, can’t digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or two especially if it rains, but it is safe for pets and small children. • Dust removal from Silk flowers: Use your hair dryer to blow off the dust. • Dusting Lampshades: Use a soft dry paintbrush.

In December, flyers are again distributed to every household in the community, requesting donations of food and/or money. However, in addition to food being given to each family, the Committee also purchases gifts for each person, in each household. On average there are 350 -400 gifts required. A few days before Christmas boxes are packed with all the food as well as the gifts are wrapped and put into boxes for the individual families. As at Thanksgiving, these boxes are then picked up by Nations and distributed to the needy families. As can be imagined, this is a very large undertaking and requires the help of many volunteers. Listed below are the tasks that volunteers are needed for: Packing of boxes Christmas @7pm on Tues, Dec. 18 Wrapping of the 350-400 presents @noon on Sun Dec. 16 Staging the packed boxes at the curb and loading them on to Nations truck @7AM on Wed, Dec. 19
Anyone willing to participate in this great/satisfying cause please call anyone of us. All help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Chairperson Charlene Ruotolo @ 847-606-4248(c) or 847-309-6570(c)

CRAFT FAIR THANK YOU
We would like to thank everyone who helped with the Craft Fair to make it a huge success! Thanks also to the Hometown staff who set up the rooms. Also, Hometown rented the extra tables we needed. We had 60 vendors this year – 12 more than last year. We had a LOT of compliments on the people who helped the vendors in and out with their merchandise, breaks, etc. Kudos to all our Vendor Helpers!! $843.15 raised by the Bake Sale, chaired by Susan Bell, goes to the food baskets that Del Tura
fills for 70 families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Proceeds from the Raffle, chaired by Betty Scheetz, Lunch and Vendor Fees go equally to Hope Hospice and to Movember, in support of men’s health. We’re able to give $1,250 to each charity. This
