President’s Korner… Let’s get to know your HOA. First, the initials stand for Home Owner’s Association. An Association is an organization of people with a common purpose having a formal structure. Many HOA’s have been organized for homes in a community, condos, mobile home parks, and manufactured home parks. There are various types of HOA’s, each charging their own fees based on their charter and type of HOA. Our HOA is a lot renter HOA meaning we can’t make decisions on our own which affect our community. We can and do negotiate community issues with management. Our dues are only $12.00 a year per household.

The bulk of our expenses are covered by revenues from entertainment, special events, and other events that collect monies. Too often, I hear that our Board does nothing. The Board has negotiated for pickleball courts, dog park amenities, an HOA office building, umbrellas, tables, renovations for pools, license scanner and camera for improved gate security, new carpeting for our ballrooms, refunds for charges on rent and irrigation, purchased new equipment for ballroom lighting and sound, just to mention a few, and all for only $12.00 per household. It also includes a TOWER subscription and reduced rates for

Family Owned and Operated

entertainment. Many of our residents don’t even belong to HOA. But, without our support, the HOA would not function effectively on your behalf. What leverage would Del Turians have without the HOA to negotiate issues with Hometown? So, come to your HOA Board meetings, offer solutions and constructive criticism. The next meeting is Wednesday, June 12th @ 7:00 pm in the Starlight Ballroom. Our HOA does work. It works for the betterment of the residents of our Del Tura community. Remember, smiles are contagious. Bette Ewing-Cheney

Time to ‘Cycle’ Through Some Investment Ideas If you’ve noticed an increase in bicycle-related events lately, it may be because May is recognized as “Bike Month” – and some cities even observe a specific Bike Week. Of course, bicycling is good exercise and an environmentally friendly method of transportation, but it can also teach us some lessons about investing.

Here are a few to consider: Put the brakes on risky moves. To keep themselves safe, experienced cyclists regularly do two things: They keep their brakes in good shape and they

don’t take unnecessary risks, such as whipping around blind curves. As an investor, you can combine these two actions by putting your own “brakes” on risky moves. For example, if you’re tempted to buy some hot investment you heard about, you may want to think twice before acting. Why? In the first place, most “hot” investments don’t stay hot for too long, and may be cooling off by the time you hear of them. And even more important, they might not be appropriate for either your risk tolerance or your need to diversify your portfolio. When you invest, you can’t eliminate all risks, but you can reduce them by avoiding impulsive moves and sticking with a disciplined, long-term strategy based on your needs and goals.

Get regular financial tune-ups. Avid cyclists keep their bikes in good shape through regular maintenance. When you invest, you usually don’t need to make a lot of drastic moves, but you should periodically “tune up” your investment portfolio, possibly with the help of a financial professional, during regular reviews. Such a tune-up may involve any number of steps, but the main goal is to update your portfolio so it reflects where you’re at in life – your goals, risk tolerance, earnings and family situation. Protect yourself from bumps in the road. All serious bicyclists – and all bicyclists serious about keeping their heads intact – wear helmets when they

are riding, because they know the dangers of rough terrain. Likewise, you need to protect yourself from the bumps in the road that could impede your progress toward your objectives. For starters, life insurance can help your family meet some essential needs – pay the mortgage, educate children, and so on – in case something were to happen to you. And you may need disability insurance to replace your income temporarily if you became injured or ill and can’t work for a while. Also, you might want long-term care insurance, which can help you guard against the potentially catastrophic costs of an extended stay in a nursing home or the services of a home health care worker.

Don’t stop pedaling. When going long distances, bicyclists ride through rain, wind, sun and mosquitoes. They elude angry motorists and they change flat

tires. In short, they persist in reaching their destinations. As an investor, you will pursue some goals that you may not reach until far in the future, such as a comfortable retirement, so you too need to demonstrate determination and persistence by continuing to invest, in good markets and bad, through unsettling political and global events – and even despite your own occasional doubts. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or not, following these principles can help keep your financial wheels moving along the road to your goals.

Reflections

“Those Little Things in Life”

By Dianne J. Roderick

If we are asked to make a list of things we are thankful for in our lives most of us can create quite a lengthy list in just a few minutes. When we stop to think about those important things in or lives, we usually think about family, health, good friends, and how blessed we are to be retired here in Paradise. These are the most cherished and without a doubt they should be! What makes it all work? So many factors contribute to our happiness, some we are responsible for and many rely on how we interact with others each day. Those little things that we do each day make a huge difference as we follow our life’s journey. Some of those little things in life that have an effect on our lives, and the lives of others, are not realized until we actually put them into action. I like to refer to them as “after effects”-not realized within the moment, but the ones that continue to give us warm

thoughts and feeling for days, months, and sometimes years. For example, the friend that decides to write a note to a friend after many years doesn’t realize the full joy that it will bring when received. A note from a parent thanking a teacher for her kindness will never know how many times that teacher has read it over the years. Or your boss, saying that a customer called and was thankful and pleased with your service. These unsuspecting good deeds always bring joy and good feelings! We don’t always have to let people know that we did something for them. Many of the kindest deeds are done by the most humble people. It’s always nice to receive thanks, but how about the feeling one gets when we pay forward without the receiver knowing? When we do things from our hearts the personal rewards are worth more than any monetary value. There’s no better feeling! Feelings of the moment are equally as important to our

North Fort Myers everyday happiness. How about that feeling when you receive an unexpected hug from a child? Or an unexpected phone call, a compliment, a smile, or a friendly Del Tura wave? Good feelings on both sides that radiate all day long and even longer! It’s not easy living in today’s world! The everyday pressures that many of us face have a way of consuming our time and energy, not allowing us to go beyond ourselves. In this whirlwind of life we often miss the “precious moments” where we could make a difference in the lives of our families and friends. Those “little things” all contribute to our most cherished things in life. When we give with our hearts we are instantly rewarded by the fact that we have helped make someone else’s life a little brighter. So whether it’s just a friendly Del Tura wave and smile, or a neighborly helping hand remember it will make a heart-warming difference.

Good Timers’ Singles Club News by Liz Poniatowski We are not placed on this earth to see through each other...But to see each other through. Some of our Good Timers have already gone back “home” to spend time with family and friends and enjoy the summer months in a place other than “Paradise”. We

full time Del Turians are staying behind to see each other through the hot summer months and go on some new adventures in smaller groups. Some items on the horizon are visiting the Peace River Wildlife Center in the Ponce de Leon park in Punta Gorda, taking a trip to Fishermen’s Village to walk around the shops and enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the

restaurants. With any luck there will be some good movies coming out soon so we can beat the heat by enjoying lunch and a movie (or two) in the air conditioning! Game day will be starting up again too. We’re saving our change and getting ready to play Pokeno, LCR and Penny Drop and of course we love our card and board games too. Please check the bulletin board for more details.

Calling all Stage Technicians Ever watch a live performance and wonder how that lighting effect was created? Ever ask yourself what actually goes on behind the scenes of that concert to make it so spectacular? Did you ever think you would like to participate in a production but not as a performer? Are you a frequent audience member of the productions here at Del Tura? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you might just be who we are looking for. The Sound and Lighting committee, a part of the Del Tura HOA is currently looking for people who want to learn and participate behind the scenes at our many resident and professionally produced shows. Whether it is lighting, sound, or stage crew our ranks are always ready to grow. This is a strictly volunteer organization and it relies on

continued participation from our residents to continue. There is one big perk however, if you are working on a show, you get to see that show for free! Often multiple times. Feel free to contact me

4th of July Celebration As always Del Tura will have a wonderful July 4th Celebration beginning with a golf cart parade at 9am. Come join in and decorate your cart, bike or car. It’s a lot of fun to see how creative everyone is here! If you have a group, come up with a group theme, the more the merrier. The festivities will continue with a golf cart poker run, golf challenges and hopefully other morning activities (if we get volunteers). Lunch will be available for a reasonable cost and then afternoon carnival games in the Starlight ballroom. Prizes galore including 3 best decorated golf carts, 3 highest poker hands, golf awards, door prizes, carnival prizes, etc. And at 2pm we have a strong finish with BINGO followed by partying at the pub. A fun day for everyone! Plan to spend this special Holiday with your Del Tura family. More details in the June Tower but it all depends on how many volunteers we get. Erv and Linda Storma will lead the team again this year but we are only as strong as the team. We need you! Come on and get involved! It’s a fun activity and the more people we get, the less work it is. Call Erv or Linda and 239-997-9066 and give us a hand. Thanks!

At the Hydrant - The Danger of Bufo Frogs to Dogs & Cats By Justine Fitzgibbons A common threat to south Florida dogs is poisoning from Bufo marinus, the giant or cane toad. This species of toad produces a pasty yellow- white toxin in the parotid glands, which extend from the head backward over the shoulder region and is released through pinhole openings in the skin. When a dog mouths or bites a Bufo toad the toxin is released and rapidly absorbed across the mucus membranes of the mouth. Symptoms of Bufo poisoning occur suddenly and may include profuse salivation, vocalizing and pawing at the mouth, brick-red gums, in-coordination or a stiff gait, difficulty breathing and the intoxication can rapidly progress to seizures and death. The severity of the poisoning depends on the size of the dog and the amount of toxin absorbed into the blood stream. Puppies and small breed dogs such as Dachshunds, Mini-Pins, Jack Russell Terriers and miniature Schnauzers are more seriously affected because they get “more poison per pound” than a large breed dog. Bufo toads are most active in the spring and summer months when it is warm and moist outside. They are also nocturnal; therefore, most poisonings occur in the evening, late-night or early-morning hours. Poisonings can happen very quickly and even dogs being

leash-walked have been known to grab a toad and be poisoned WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS POISONED BY A BUFO TOAD. Step 1) DO NOT PANIC!!! You need to be able to think clearly and act quickly to help save your pet. Panicking will only keep you from acting properly! Step 2) IMMEDIATELY rinse the dog’s mouth out with a large amount of water using either a hose, kitchen sink sprayer, shower sprayer or water bottle. Rinse the mouth from side to side. DO NOT DROWN THE ANIMAL BY FORCING WATER DOWN ITS THROAT. The toxin is very sticky and may need to be gently rubbed off of the mucus membranes of the mouth. Be very careful so as not to get bit by your pet. Even the gentlest animal may bite if it is scared, in pain or having a seizure.

Step 3) Calmly transport the dog to your veterinarian for further care. PLAN AHEAD! Save time in an emergency by preparing now. Keep the phone number of your veterinarian by the telephone. Since most poisonings occur at night CALL FIRST to make sure that the hospital is open, don’t waste time driving to a closed facility. Keep the phone number and address of a nearby emergency clinic near the phone too, in case your regular veterinarian is not available. There is no specific antidote for Bufo-toxin and treatment consists mainly of supportive care. The toxin can affect the heart causing it to beat in an irregular pattern and hypothermia (body temperature greater than 105 degrees) may develop from seizures. Intravenous fluids, cool-water baths and anti-arrhythmic drugs are all used in the treatment of Bufo intoxication. So what can you do to prevent your pet from being poisoned? First of all, learn to recognize what a Bufo toad looks like. Adults can be as large as 6 to 9 inches in length and have brown, or graybrown warty skin. Younger toads are much smaller but just as dangerous. Bufo toads are ground dwelling animals. Do not confuse them with tree frogs, which have suction-cup feet and may be found crawling up the side of your house. Bufo toads live near water such as ponds, canals and swimming

pools. Search your yard in the late evening for them. If you have just moved to a new neighborhood, ask a neighbor if the toads inhabit the area. In addition to eating insects, small animals, snakes and vegetation, Bufo toads are especially fond of pet food. You can avoid attracting toads to your yard by not leaving bowls of dog or cat

food down on the ground. If you live in an area inhabited by Bufo toads, you need to be especially careful. Direct supervision while your pet is outside is crucial and may prevent a tragedy. If you have a fenced-in yard you can make it harder for the toads to get through the links by putting chicken-wire fencing along the bottom edge.

SPORTS & EXERCISE Pickleball Pickleball is called America’s fastest growing sport. It has become very popular here in Del Tura as well. It is so popular in Florida, that it is the number one reason people visit an urgent care due to injury. Three years ago, Dick and Denise Rose began giving lessons on how to play and we now can fill eight courts on many mornings. In season, many

people get together for recreational play starting at 7:30 in the morning. And with the lights, Del Tura installed we can play in the evening when it is cooler. At the urging of Del Tura management, a committee has been formed to act as a liaison between the Del Tura Management and the Del Tura pickleball population and to facilitate Inter-community play. A meeting was held of 43 players and the following people were selected for the committee:Ron Allen Jim Hinrichs Julia McDonald Larry Moore Denise Rose Pat Roush Sandy Vassallo A group page on Facebook has been set up so players can look for others to play with, learn about the game and other pickleball related topics. Search Facebook for Del Tura Pickleball or contact the committee by emailing: committeedtpb@gmail.com. We are always looking for new players and many are happy to help you learn the game. Dick and Denise Rose also continue to offer to teach, their individual phone numbers are in the community directory.

There is a long list of courses to select from. But first, check out when courses are less crowded and if any of the course is under repair. hole-in-one was on 3 South. And finally, Joanne Nitka on 4 West. My Monday group was playing on 2 South when we heard a scream in front of us. It was definitely that “hole-in-one” yell we have all heard. The ladies said Bobbie’s ball went beautifully over the water, took a couple of hops and went in the hole. It is amazing how excited everyone gets. Why not! Congratulations to Mary, Bobbie and Joanne! With season over Ryan will no longer be holding clinics but private lessons are available. Anyone new to Del Tura: We are always looking for new members. Our membership

chairperson is Kay Rolader. Contact Kay at 239-292-4964 if you are interested in joining. Everyone should have received the tournament schedule for next season. Plan getaways and company around the tournaments! The more who play, the more fun it is for everyone. While watching a recent golf tournament on television the commentators talked about a player who, after a bad shot, tried a heroic “make-up” shot and got into even more trouble. A probable bogey became a triple bogey. One of the commentators said that after a poor shot, just try to make a decent shot. Then make a good shot. Excellent advice for all of us.

It’s getting very quiet around Del Tura; but the 9 hole league continues to be active. A Member/Guest tournament will be held May 23th. The golf calendar by this time has been finalized and plans for another Member/Guest tournament in November should be set. More information will follow. Debby Taylor is working on a K.I.S.S. event for this October. The Men’s MEGA golf day is September 12. Our league is working on “Ladies Fun Day” to coincide with this event. May through September combined 9 hole and 18 hole monthly gatherings, including a luncheon, will begin. Our General Meeting was held April 11th. Dorothy Cook, Secretary, sent via e-mail a copy to all members. Of note; a very moving and well attended “Farewell Luncheon” was held for Sue Symes. Sue was a long time member of

the league and an active volunteer. She will be missed. Also, the bylaw amendments were suggestion of Maureen Monroy, Rules Committee Chairperson. The amendments were approved and will be included in

the 2020 membership book. Essentially, the changes were written to be compliant with the new 2019 USGA Rules of Golf and affect the North Course only. Maureen also reminded members that when the thunderstorm warning horn blows, league play is stopped. All Board Members asked that members read and comply with the etiquette pages in our handbook. Lastly, the family of Shirley Williams would like to have a permanent memorial in her honor. Justine Fitzgibbons, President, has been in discussion with the family, Pro Shop and Hometown America about type and placement. It was voted upon and approved that the league will match the family donation of $300 and a bench will be place on the course. April and May; months of snow birds flying North. Wishing you all safe travels and warm weather upon arrival at home. Looking forward to seeing you next year in the 9 hole league.

SPORTS & EXERCISE Del Tura Amigos Softball News By Art Keen Attention Amigo backers. Even though the season is over it doesn’t mean we can’t talk about our favorite softball team. More specifically, let’s talk about recruiting. That’s right, I want to recruit fans, photographers, reporters, scorekeepers and team members to come out and join the fun! I bet there is even room on the cheer leading squad for a few more lovelies. For the last few years the ranks of the Amigo backers has grown.

This past season during one of the biggest games of the season, we actually had more than 200 people come out and support the team! Yes siree Bob, Del Tura residents and friends came out and supported our team in numbers that totally eclipsed the fan count of any of the other teams! This is not only a shout out to those who came, but a call to action for those who missed out. Keep your eyes peeled to this spot in subsequent Tower editions for the upcoming schedule and make it a point to join us at the ballpark so you can

be part of the action as the Amigos prepare to defend their championship and make it a Threepeat! Oh, I almost forgot, we are looking to bolster the ranks of the team as well. One of the goals of our team management staff is to have two top notch teams representing Del Tura. This past year we had 17 players on our championship team. If we can get about 10 or so more interested players we could field two teams.

It can be bent ot flattened to get into narrow openings. • Measuring Cups: Before you pour sticky substance into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the water but don’t dry the cup. add your ingredient (like peanut butter) and watch how easily it comes right out. Foggy Windshield: Buy a chalk eraser and keep it in the glove • compartment of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser... works better than a cloth! • Reopening Envelope: If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place the envelope in the freezer for an hour or two... it will unseal easily. Goodbye Fruit Flies: Take a small glass and fill it with 1/2 with Apple • cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. Flies are drawn to the cup then gone.

If your cat loves the “nip” you can give it to her without worrying. Most of the time they are done playing with it after ten minutes. Organic Catnip is the most potent. Mailbag BLOOD DRIVE SUCCESS! By Dennis Cottini I am happy to report that due to your willingness, time and energy towards donating blood, the Lee Health staff collected 30 units at last April’s blood drive.

We exceeded our goal of 29 units. This number included welcomed walk-ins. Remember, the blood collected always remains in Lee county. Also, an important fact is that one pint of blood could save one baby. Thank you!

JULY 10TH

2018/2019 New Resident Get Together - Pub 4-5pm

Thanks!
