Thursday Night Bingo By Jack Blevons Hope you all are ready for our regular Thursday Night Bingo. Janet & I will be back in DelTura in October & anxious to run Thursday Night Bingo for all of you again. We heard that there
has been bingo being played on Thursday nights over the summer months which is good but just want you all to know that we will be back running HOA sponsored Bingo starting October 18th, at 7:00 like always. We are hoping to have all of our regular crew back again, to help us run it for the enjoyment of all our DelTura residents. Like last year, we will be keeping the games simple so that its fun playing so that we get bigger crowds playing which will naturally make the pots bigger & we all know that makes it a lot more fun playing. If we can get more people coming to play we can add more games & also raise
the pay-outs on the games. So, mark your calendars with Bingo on your Thursday nights. Janet & I look forward to seeing you all there again & Janet & I will make your Thursday Night Bingo a fun night again like we did last season.

Greetings one and all…… Let me start by saying I hope you all had a wonderful summer with lots of family time, traveling, and fun in the sun. Although you are reading the October issue, I’m actually putting this column together in early September. As I looked through the calendar, it seems hard to believe that exactly one year ago, many of us were saying goodbye to each other and wondering whether we would ever see our homes again, as Hurricane Irma bore down on us. Miraculously, Irma decided to jog a bit to the right and we were all spared, and we came home to lots of hugs and a considerable amount of clean up. It’s now a year later and the work done by our Hometown crew has our development looking great again. More than thirteen hundred trees were lost and the process of taking cutting them up and grinding the stumps is more time demanding than most of us realize. And of course, while that was happening, the day to day maintenance of Del
Tura was a continuing priority. My thanks to Fred Taylor and his folks for helping us continue to move forward with new projects as well as the usual routine maintenance. Along those same lines, I hope we all remember that maintenance is a two way street. Care of our property goes a long way toward keeping our development looking beautiful for us and our visitors. Please remember to hold off on putting vegetation, construction and bulk items out at the curb until the night before pick up. It gets rather unsightly when we allow our trash to gather at our curbs a week ahead of time. And remember that during the rainy season, everything grows much faster, so it’s always a good idea to keep up with the weeding of gardens so they don’t get out of control. If you’re away on an extended trip, it’s always best to find someone who can take care of those types of things in your absence. If you have a concern about an item or issue, don’t forget our
Suggestion Boxes. We have one in the back of the Starlight Ballroom and one in the HOA office. We check them regularly and try to handle each item in a timely fashion. Finally, the work of our HOA gets done by many people. We are always looking for volunteers in such areas as the kitchen, sound and lighting, entertainment, etc. If you are interested, please contact any member of the Board of Directors listed in the back of this issue, and they will gladly point you in the right direction. And of course, if you’d like to run for election to the Board of Directors, please see Bart De Graaf and fill out an application. There are three spots to be filled at our annual meeting this February. Life is good! We are getting ready to welcome back our seasonal residents in the coming months and we will all start getting really busy again. From where I sit as always…… it’s just another day in paradise! Can You Count on a Bountiful Investment “Harvest”? We’re officially in autumn – the season when we bring in what we planted in the spring. But the concept of planting and gathering isn’t confined to agriculture. In fact, it can be used in many walks of life, including investing. So what can you do to help work toward a successful investment “harvest”? Here is (not quite) a bushel of ideas:
Plant the right “seeds.” When farmers plant specific crops, they know about what to expect – how long it will take for them to grow, how much yield
they’ll produce, and so on. When you invest, you too need to plant “seeds” by choosing investments that are designed to help meet your goals. For example, to accumulate enough money for a comfortable retirement, you will probably need to own a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks – you generally can’t expect the type of growth you need by investing solely in fixed-income investments, such as bonds and certificates of deposit.
Nurture your “crops.” Agricultural workers are diligent about cultivating their crops through proper irrigation, fertilization and weed control. And if you want to keep your investment portfolio healthy, you also must find ways to nurture it. First of all, you will need to keep adding new dollars regularly, because the larger your overall investment base, the more you can expand its growth potential. But you might also need to do some “weeding” of your own, because over the years, you may have purchased some investments that, for one reason or another, are now no longer suitable for your needs. If that’s the case, you might be better off by selling these investments and using the proceeds for new ones that could fill gaps in your portfolio.
Diversify. Farmers may plant a mix of crops: corn, soybeans, flax, legumes, fruits, and so on. Consequently, if one crop fails, it won’t sink the farmer’s
entire business. As an investor, you, too, need to diversify, because if you only own one type of asset class, and a financial downturn hits that asset, your portfolio can take a big hit. But spreading your dollars among stocks, bonds, cash and other investments can help reduce the impact of market volatility on your holdings. (However, diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) Thus far, we’ve looked at ideas on how you can create a healthy investment crop. But once it’s time to actually start harvesting your portfolio – that is, once you begin liquidating parts of it to support yourself during your retirement years – you also need to act carefully. Specifically, you need to establish a withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your situation, based on your age, lifestyle, income sources and other factors. You could be retired for two or three decades, so it’s essential you don’t withdraw so much during your early years of retirement that you risk outliving your money. A financial professional can help you determine the rate that’s right for you. The agricultural harvest season only lasts a few weeks. But doing a good job of growing and managing your investment crop can help you reap the rewards far into the future.

September, October, MOVEMBER! Cooler days, refreshing evenings and a spotlight shining bright on Men’s Health Awareness Month. We celebrate and symbolize the month by growing ( or wearing ) a MOUSTACHE ( the MO in MOVEMBER ). It is a time for raising funds to support the efforts for prevention and the cure of PROSTATE CANCER, TESTICULAR CANCER and MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS. “MOVEMBER” is the international organization that raised more than $70 MILLION in the U.S.A with 84% going directly to the scientific and clinical minds that collaboratively tackle and solve critical men’s health challenges. We ask for your help and here’s how you may contribute: Each Tuesday morning we will have a donation table in the hallway outside of the regular Weekly Coffee Social. Moustaches will be
available to those unable or unwilling to grow a MO for a donation. Grow a MO and have sponsors commit to your growing your MO. Donors sheets are available. One of our sponsors has committed to $100 for ONE MO!.

DEL TURA’S DOG OF THE MONTH - RICO I was born on May 25, 2015. I first got adopted by a lady who really didn’t have time for meso I spent a lot of time alone- in a laundry room. I didn’t really learn how to socialize - play -go out for long walks and learn to do my “business” outside. After two years my lady owner realized she had to find a home for me - so with the help of a groomer they found a foster home for me. My foster home was very nice. There was a lot of love and attention given. My foster mom had two other dogs. I wasn’t crazy about sharing the love - or toys. My little brother and I had quite a few tussles. After awhile it became clear that I might be best off as an “only child”. My foster mom had friends who would visit and every time

they came over I tried to convince them that I should go home with them. Well after awhile they got the hint. So back in November of 2017 we became official - I was Rico Bracher!
Being on “only” was heaven. But Mom was not having that. She was bound and determined to make me a fully rounded- get along with others-go for a walk DOG! I was stunned at first and not pleased. All her friends’ dogs were doing it so I had to! She introduced me to Marcy and Buddy and Jeanne and Nikki. They helped me learn - the leach - here is the harness - lets walk. I actually have fun on my walks. I like to watch Buddy go crazy when he sees a golf cart and when the squirrels run by us - we chase them. Buddy is an expert. Next came the DOG PARK! Wow that’s fun. I learned to run with other dogs - play with the balls - and meet lot of other dogs. Sometimes I don’t behave well at the park but we keep going back. Mom has faith in me!

by Ann Abramczyk Summer is flying by; if you noticed, there was no 9 hole league article in the last issue. My bad; I submitted it late. So sorry. The 9 and 18 hole leagues continue to have monthly scrambles and luncheons; it has been a great success. Let’s address a common league concern; “pace of place”. There are simple things that everyone can do to help pace of play. Here are some suggestions: 1) Before the First Tee – have your balls marked; come prepared with tees; ball markers; divot repair tools; etc. 2) On the Tee – tee off as soon as the group ahead of you is clear;
have short distance hitters go first; carry an extra ball in your pocket; watch everyone’s ball flight to help find the balls. 3) On the Fairway – go to your own ball and hit when ready; prepare for club selection as soon as you know distance; watch all the group’s balls to see where they land; if more than one player is ready to hit, communicate who is going to go first. 4) Approaching and On the Green – park the cart at exit area and take all needed clubs with you; first to the hole tends the flagstick; first one in the hole replaces the flagstick; study your putt while waiting for others; quickly exit the green
when all players are finished; record scores at next tee box. Some general considerations: 1) You should always be able to see the group ahead of you. 2) If someone has lost there ball; hit yours and then help them look. 3) Keep your pre-shot routine consistent and focused. 4) Take one practice swing. 5) For the average player; don’t be afraid to call your ball unplayable and take the penalty (sometimes you’ll be better off). 6) If you’re in the rough; get your ball back in the fairway. Remember, playing “ready golf” is good for time management and a way to play smarter, not just faster! And have fun!

Friday Shuffleboard League By Jack Blevons Once again, it’s time for shuffleboard. By the time you’re reading this, Janet and I will be back home, here in beautiful DelTura. After spending 5-months up in Wisconsin, working part-time at the campground where we both spent about 25-years and also near our families, it’s good to get back home here again. Like in the past, we will be starting up our Friday Shuffleboard League so am writing this letter to let everyone know that our league will start off the 2018-2019 season on Friday November 2nd. Janet and I will be back in Del-Tura on Sunday, October 7th so once we get unpacked and settled back in, we need to
get working on getting everything organized again so that we are ready to start our new season. We would appreciate all you team members as you read this to call us at 239-731-0892 & let us know if you will be playing again as regulars, also let us know if you will still have your same partner so we can get our roster made up & also our schedule. Also update any changes to your phone number & e-mail address. If we can get all this information we’ll then have it all printed up along with the playing schedule & dates so we can pass them out to everyone in a get-together down on the courts on Friday October 26th to all of you who can be there, & then start
league play on Friday Nov. 2nd. Also want to mention that we are always in need of people who want to both join our league as regulars & also a big need for people who would rather just be subs who we can call to play for regular members who aren’t able to play for one reason or another on any given Friday. You can call either Janet or myself at 239-731-0892 & we do have an answering machine on our phone so if we don’t answer when you call you can leave a message & we will gladly return your call. Looking forward to hearing from all of you & looking forward to having another great season of Friday Shuffleboard League.

SOFTBALL PLAYERS NEEDED The 2019 Softball season is quickly approaching. Our own Del Tura Amigos look forward to returning to defend their 2018 championship season. Before the first game in January of 2019, much preparation is needed. We are looking for as many returning and new players to join in for the
2019 season. Our hopes for 2019 are to field two Del Tura teams, the Amigos, and the Gringos! To do so, we need to get as many people involved as possible. Practices will begin in November! If you are interested in joining the team, please contact Jim Hamilton. His e-mail is: jimbigtimberconstruction@yahoo.com -- or you can give him a call at 208-313-1321.

Reflections: “A Longing for Past Octobers” By Dianne J. Roderick I can’t believe that October is here! Wasn’t it just the beginning of summer? Wait! I know that we don’t have distinct seasons in Florida and it feels more like summer than fall but I need the whole enchilada! If it is truly fall, where is the crisp cool air, the colors of gold, yellows and reds? Where’s that beautiful colorful blanket of leaves that reminds me of that crocheted afghan that my Gramma Rose lovingly made for me? Oh yes, this is not New England and I am really being overly dramatic! Get back to reality, Dianne! Don’t get me wrong, I love it here in Paradise but the memories of those past falls with family and friends seem to grow stronger with each passing year. Let me share a collection of those memories with you…perhaps they’ll trigger a few special past fall memories of your own. When I think of the season I instantly feel all of my senses heighten. Perhaps that is why it
is my most favorite! It’s not only the colors but the smells that surrounded me. Fall was a perfect time of year for those car trips to the country farms. It was almost like the old station wagon was programmed to our destination. Once there our family walked excitedly through the apple orchards. The aroma of those freshly baked apple and pumpkin pies seem to beckon us closer and closer until there was no going back. Before I knew it we were juggling a variety of pies, a gallon of freshly made apple cider, and of course there was always room for the candied apples! Did I mention the main reason for our trip was to visit the pumpkin patch? That was the original plan, but how can you resist? The senses are very persuasive! During the fall months we were also treated by many downtown art festivals, a
variety of delicious foods, and amazing musicians. Many of the local Artisans would open up their studios to us, or set up their booths along the cobblestone streets that led to the waterfront. The backdrop that the river created, was phenomenal…the breeze, with just a touch of a chill combined with the sounds of music created a feeling that one could only imagine, unless you were there. Oh, did I mention the smell of the chestnuts roasting on the open fire? Just couldn’t resist! Of course there was also the preparation for the Halloween festivities! In our house we had to start planning our celebration very early in the month. In addition to
preparing for Halloween we had to think about two very special birthdays. My husband’s was born on the 30th and our firstborn daughter Lisa was born on the 31st. You can bet that lots of spooky things happened in our house! Costumes were always a sewing challenge for me. Four children with definite ideas about what they wanted to be and what they didn’t want to be! As they got older they became very creative on their own …I must admit I did miss the challenges! Along with the birthday celebrations we had to prepare for the actual Trick or Treat evening. We would usually go to Grandma and Grandpa’s neighborhood because there were more houses and they had the most awesome candy! In our neighborhood we had an average of six Trick or Treaters. Gramma had approximately 200, very seldom less.
? 0 0 $5
She would start buying candy and popcorn balls in early September. Those ghost and goblins came from all over the city, and possibly surrounding towns. They would attend the parade put on by our South End Athletic Association, and then they would disperse into the neighborhoods. Oh boy, you better be prepared! My mother would assign someone to take care of the door, another to hand out the treats, and of course the tabulator…and let me tell you that was a very stressful job! I can still hear her, “are you sure you counted the little princess in the back of Superman?” “Yes, Mother!” As long as we have beautiful memories we will always be able to make them even more meaningful by tapping into our powerful senses. It is amazing how this happens! I hope that you enjoy this wonderful season, but whatever season is the most special to you, I wish that it brings with it an endless amount of love and happiness. Happy Fall Everyone!

HOUSEHOLD HELP/HINTS FOR EVERYONE • Flexible Vacuum: To get something out of a heat/air register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vaccum. It can be bent ot flattened to get into narrow openings. • Measuring Cups: Before you pour sticky substance into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the water but don’t dry the cup. add your ingredient (like peanut butter) and watch how easily it comes right out. • Foggy Windshield: Buy a chalk eraser and keep it in the glove compartment of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser...works better than a cloth! • Reopening Envelope: If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place the envelope in the freezer for an hour or two... it will unseal easily. • Goodbye Fruit Flies: Take a small glass and fill it with 1/2 with Apple cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. Flies are drawn to the cup then gone. • Get Rid of Ants: Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it home, can’t digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or two especially if it rains, but it is safe for pets and small children. • Dust removal from Silk flowers: Use your hair dryer to blow off the dust. • Dusting Lampshades: Use a soft dry paintbrush.

Thanksgiving & Christmas Baskets The Thanksgiving & Christmas Baskets are an ongoing Community Event for the past 38 years. This event provides food and gifts for Needy families in the North Fort Myers/Fort Myers Area. Most recently (last 7 years) there have been 70 families that have benefited from this community activity. It should be noted that all the needy families are identified and screened by Nations Association Charities. Activities begin in the October time frame, with the distribution of flyers, requesting food and/or money to be donated. They are distributed to every household in the community. These flyers also identify the volunteers that will come by to collect these donations and when. A few days before Thanksgiving, boxes are packed with all the donated food as well as food purchased by the committee. These boxes are then picked up
by Nations and distributed to the needy families. In December, flyers are again distributed to every household in the community, requesting donations of food and/or money. However, in addition to food being given to each family, the Committee also purchases gifts for each person, in each household. On average there are 350 -400 gifts required. A few days before Christmas boxes are packed with all the food as well as the gifts are wrapped and put into boxes for the individual families. As at Thanksgiving, these boxes are then picked up by Nations and distributed to the needy families. As can be imagined, this is a very large undertaking and requires the help of many volunteers. Listed below are the tasks that volunteers are needed for: Handing out flyers and collecting the donations at both Thanksgiving & Christmas. The
Thanksgiving collection will start Tuesday, Oct. 30, and the Christmas Collection will start on Friday, Nov 30 Packing of boxes. Mailbag ARE WE A CARING COMMUNITY? I have lived in DelTura for 20 years come Feb.2019. I have always appreciated the friendliness of the residents and their willingness to help wherever and whenever needed. An incident occurred in Aug. which caused me to question what has happened to our unselfish caring residents. A gentleman, visiting friends and residents on my street, had been left to stay in their home while they went on a short trip. This gentleman had met several of their friends, one of which lived a short distance down the street. One morning he woke and was experiencing some trouble breathing, and finally decided to get in the golf cart and go to the friend for help. On the way he started having chest pains and extreme difficulty breathing, and did manage to get to their
home, pulled to the side of the road, and tried to hail down two different passing golf carts with a 911 plea. They passed him by. A third van notice his wave, but said he was in a hurry and couldn’t stop. The gentleman managed to get to the front door of the friend, knocked and got her attention, and she immediately called 911. An outside contractor, noticed his struggle, stopped and stayed with him until the EMT arrived. EMT arrived in 3 min., stabilized him, but rushed him to the hospital. He was diagnosed having had a heart attack, compromised by pneumonia. He was in the hospital about 1 week. Now, were these people who passed him by an example of our caring community????? Let’s pay closer attention to our residents and continue being a caring community. Mary Harrell
