President’s Korner… This month I’d like to spotlight and thank some of our volunteers who contribute behind the scenes. Every Tuesday at coffee, Dave Lane and John Bilancio greet people as they enter and sell 50/50 tickets. Both men are veterans and have loyally served our country. Carolyn Brueggemann is there with a pleasant smile at every coffee to check the blood pressure of our residents. Dennis Cottini has been very successful in providing an invaluable service to our community with the Del Tura Blood Mobile Drives and co-edits our TOWER. Audrey Martin provides us with Wednesday movie nights, including free popcorn. Check out the online coffee videos, TOWER publications, and HOA website professionally compiled by Al Wells. Kathleen Quigley and Barb Jones run a first-class library across from the billiards room. Have you been there? There are current books and publications available for checkout and they are eager to give tips on the best reads.
How about a movie night at home with friends? Elaine Schmur and Mary Harrell have a well-stocked DVD library with current movies that can be rented for a nominal fee. Want a workout without going to a gym? Marylou Buss conducts water aerobics at the north pool. Jane Fonda aerobics, tai chi, and Tura Zumba are headed by Teddy Reid and Marjorie Lord. Yoga, relaxation, and zumba fitness classes are offered by Dea Wells and Chris Bunker. Check the dates and times in the activities section of this Tower.. Feeling creative? Have you seen the beautiful ceramics projects on display in the outside ceramic room cases? You too, can create your own treasures by seeing Janet Ragone or Ruth Anne Blevins who are in charge of the Ceramics Room. Ruth Anne also does an awesome job running our HOA Office. Like to play cards? Many volunteers offer a wide variety of games to play. Among those are Betty Scheetz and Marcella
Carothers who have been in charge of card games for years. Look for scheduled events on the activities page, here in the TOWER to confirm game times, dates, and contact info. There are many more volunteers that contribute their time for the betterment of our community. I want to give thanks to them also. Without all our volunteers, Del Tura would not be the fun place to live that it is. On a different note, I have received complaints through our Board members about recent rules violations and would like to review the following: Please do not bring glass bottles of beer, wine or champagne, or beverage glasses to any of our pools. Broken glass in a pool area is dangerous and for very good reasons, against pool rules. And remember, at no time are children without a valid driver’s license allowed to drive a golf cart in Del Tura. Please follow common sense rules but also remember, smiles are contagious… Bette Ewing-Cheney

Estate Plans Can Help You Answer Questions About the Future The word “estate” conjures images of great wealth, which may be one of the reasons so many people don’t develop estate plans – after all, they’re not rich, so why make the effort? In reality, though, if you have a family, you can probably benefit from estate planning, whatever your asset level. And you may well find that a comprehensive estate plan can help you answer some questions you may find unsettling – or even worrisome. Here are a few of these questions: What will happen to my children? With luck, you (and your co-parent, if you have one) will be alive and well at least until your children reach the age of majority (either 18 or 21, depending on where you live). Nonetheless, you don’t want to take any chances, so, as part of your estate plans, you may want to name a guardian to take care of your children if you are not around. You also might want to name a conservator – sometimes called a “guardian of the estate” – to manage any assets your minor children might inherit. Will there be a fight over my assets? Without a solid estate plan in place, your assets could be subject to the time-consuming, expensive – and very public – probate process. During probate, your relatives and creditors can gain access to your records, and possibly even challenge your will. But with proper planning, you can maintain your privacy. As one possible element of an estate plan, a living trust allows your property to avoid probate and pass quickly to the beneficiaries you’ve named. Who will oversee my finances and my living situation if I become incapacitated? You can build various forms of protection into your estate planning, such as a durable power of attorney, which allows you to designate someone to manage your financial affairs if you become physically or mentally incapacitated. You could also create a medical power of attorney, which allows someone to handle health care decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so yourself. Will I shortchange my family if I leave significant assets to charities? Unless you have unlimited resources, you’ll have to make some choices about charitable gifts and money for your family. But as part of your estate plans, you do have some appealing options. For example, you could establish a charitable lead trust, which provides financial support to your chosen charities for a period of time, with the remaining assets eventually going to your family members. A charitable remainder trust, by contrast, can provide a stream of income for your family members for the term of the trust, before the remaining assets are transferred to one or more charitable organizations. As you can see, careful estate planning can help you answer many of the questions that may be worrying you. Be aware, though, that certain aspects of estate planning, especially those related to living trusts and charitable trusts, can be complex, so you should consult your estate-planning attorney or qualified tax advisor about your situation. But once you’ve got your plans in place, you should be able to face the future with greater clarity and confidence.

Reflections
“When Does a House Become a Home?”(If Walls Could Talk)
By Dianne J. Roderick
What makes a house a home? Think back on those years when you were just starting out as young married couples. Remember those days when you both envisioned what your life would be like? Dreaming with stars in your eyes and talking about having a family and buying your dream home. Eventually that dream would become a reality. Maybe not exactly the way you had planned, but never the less by working together you were able to see your dream start to unfold. For some of us it was not exactly how we imagined it. For us, it was a far cry from our vision, but we had stars in our eyes, two beautiful toddlers, and love! Who could ask for more than that? I can vividly remember the day we saw our very first house almost fifty years ago. Such excitement! There it was set back from the road in the middle of the lot, encircled by tall pine trees. Nestled between them was a small cottage with a super-sized yard perfect for the children! Some people would have called it a handyman’s special but through our rose-colored glasses, we saw possibilities and in our eyes it was beautiful! We began to make plans and couldn’t wait to move in. Wait! Did I just hear a groan coming from inside our dream house? We had lots of work ahead of us and with the help of our family we
were able to move in a month later. That house was never going to be the same! In no time the yard was surrounded by a white picket fence. Next came the swing set…come to think of it the neighborhood was never going to be the same either! Our family continued to grow. The following spring our third child and second daughter was born. More excitement! In those early years our world was filled with a whirlwind of activities-mostly child-centered. Children, wall to wall toys, and “The power of finding beauty in the humblest things make home happy and life… lovely.” – Louisa May Alcott
Weebles everywhere! The RotoRooter man, outside of making a bundle on us, became part of the family! After a while he stopped knocking at the door, he just gingerly wove his way through the maze of kids, toys and pets. We were outgrowing our dream house but somehow managed to fit everyone in. Now I think if those walls could have talked back then they would have said, “I think I feel a migraine coming on!” Hence, its reason for the earlier groans. Before you knew it our third daughter and fourth child was born. Our son had to share his room with his younger sister until he was almost ten. His room was part of
the nursery and he often talks about how he never got a good night’s sleep…please!! I will admit that the circus wallpaper that he had to endure all those years may have been the cause of his lifelong fear of clowns. However, I’m not ready to admit that completely yet! As the years progressed and our children’s world expanded beyond the confines of our house and yard, so did their circle of friends. With four growing children you eventually stop asking how many will be here for dinner? Somewhere within those years our house was no longer referred to as a “house”it was our home! It didn’t matter how small the rooms were, or that we had one bathroom. We managed to fill it with laughter and lots of love. If those walls could talk I know that they would describe the love that was felt within the rooms of that small cottage. Heart to hearts shared until the wee hours of the night… The strong sense of family, the times we laughed, celebrated, and the times we cried. As we close that chapter of our lives and continue onto the next chapter together we think about how blessed we have been through the years. Our home gave us precious memories and allowed us to create a living album in our hearts and minds. What we realize now is that as soon as we opened the door of that dream house way back then, “our love made it into our dream home”.
Good Timers’ Singles Club News by Liz Poniatowski If you live in the past, you have no future. Living in the past brings both sad and happy memories to mind. Hopefully more happy than sad. To fully enjoy the time we have at hand we need to look towards the future and plan fun activities to create more happy memories. With that in mind the Good Timers’ are now looking toward the future when our part time residents return. August and September will be a little slow but the pace will pick back up in October. The Cape Coral German
American Social Club’s Octoberfest will be here for 2 weekends in October. Plans to get a group together to go enjoy some good German food/beer/music and of course each others company are in the works. Next up is a trip on the Murder Mystery Dinner Train in late Fall/early Winter! And of course we’re waiting for the local Play schedules to be published so we can pick a few to attend. Please check the bulletin board outside the Pub area to see what’s next on our “Save The Date” listing! If you’re single and looking
to go places and do things in the company of other singles...please consider joining our club. Our next meeting will be held on AUGUST 6th followed by SEPTEMBER 3rd. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month in the Poinciana Room. Socializing begins at 4:00 with the meeting starting at 4:30 sharp. Fish Of Del Tura News
With heartfelt sadness and anticipation, Rich and I have left this wonderful community of Del Tura to move to The Villages, Florida, to be closer to our family. We are humbled for all the well wishes we had been given. We have lived here since 2005 and have been very involved in many activities and have met and made many friends. We cherish our friendships and our memories with them. Before our move, we’d like to suggest a little advice and that is: to find something you like to do and to “go for it!” or try it. The word volunteer comes to our minds and because of all the volunteers in Del Tura, this community excels. Also, get to know your neighbors and be kind to one another. I like to end this chapter in our lives and on to our next adventure with the following:
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His Hand. We are already looking forward to visiting you in Del Tura. A Welcome sign will be hung soon in June and we would love for you to visit us in our new home. Our address will be 17424 SE 77th Sycamore Ave. The Villages, Fl 32102-5828. Our cell phone is 239-322-9928.

At the Hydrant - Mulligan By Justine Fitzgibbons My name is Mulligan, and I have that name because it means “second chance.” My parents, Steve and Nancy Davy, rescued me in January 2012 from a kill shelter I had been placed in after being found running the streets of Orlando. Although no one knows my history, my parents suspect I had been beaten as I would lie along the back of the couch with my back to the wall so I could see everything in front of me. At first, I didn’t want anyone to touch my face or my hind quarters, and it took a long time before I would let Mommy brush my teeth. But that was then – because now I have a very happy life in my new home! I tolerate Mommy taking pictures every holiday for calendars and Christmas cards. I
am also very smart and love cart rides. I even know how to spell R-I-D-E and get all excited when I hear it. My Daddy grills for me and I love being spoiled by him. I try to follow him everywhere and don’t let him out of my sight. I love it when Mommy rocks me
and gives me kisses, and Uncle Ron and Aunt Elaine spoil me, too!! There is now another reason that “Mulligan” is a perfect name. Right after Christmas of last year I needed surgery, and an aggressive malignant melanoma the size of a small plum was removed from my throat. I weighed exactly 12 lbs., and I was given four months to live. Now, 7 months later, as this article is being written I weigh 13.6 lbs. and am as feisty as ever. My parents say I am the best dog they ever had, and we are so grateful to be in each other’s lives. I am now twelve years old and I love my life at Del Tura. If any of you are considering adding a dog to your family, please think about going the rescue route, so that you, too, can provide a much-needed second chance.

SPORTS & EXERCISE Pickleball Pickleball is called America’s fastest growing sport. It has become very popular here in Del Tura as well. It is so popular in Florida, that it is the number one reason people visit an urgent care due to injury. Three years ago, Dick and Denise Rose began giving lessons on how to play and we now can fill eight courts on many mornings. In season, many people get together for recreational play starting at
7:30 in the morning. And with the lights, Del Tura installed we can play in the evening when it is cooler. At the urging of Del Tura management, a committee has been formed to act as a liaison between the Del Tura Management and the Del Tura pickleball population and to facilitate Inter-community play. A meeting was held of 43 players and the following people were selected for the committee: Ron Allen Jim Hinrichs Julia McDonald Larry Moore Denise Rose Pat Roush Sandy Vassallo A group page on Facebook has been set up so players can look for others to play with, learn about the game and other pickleball related topics. Search Facebook for Del Tura Pickleball or contact the committee by emailing: committeedtpb@gmail.com. We are always looking for new players and many are happy to help you learn the game. Dick and Denise Rose also continue to offer to teach, their individual phone numbers are in the community directory.

SPORTS & EXERCISE Del Tura Amigos Softball News By Art Keen As I write this the temperature outside is reminding me that the dog days of summer are upon us. When I think of hot summer days I think of baseball. When I think of baseball I think of softball and when I think of softball, I think of our two-time league champion softball team, Del Tura’s own Amigos. It is rapidly approaching the time for our players to be oiling up their gloves, polishing their cleats and pine tarring their bats in anticipation of the upcoming season. (Well, maybe they are laying off the pine tar, but they are likely doing the other things to prepare.) With that in mind I want to start encouraging both athletes and spectators to start thinking about coming out and supporting our team. Whether you are a player or a fan, the Amigos need your support. A future article will
tell you all when we will be having our first organizational meetings. Great news! It is a very likely possibility that with your support we can actually field TWO teams for the upcoming season. In years past there has been a second team, the Gringos playing alongside the Amigos. In order to do this, we need more people to come out to
play. We are looking for at least 30 able bodied men and women to play in order for us to field two competitive teams. Of course, that would mean we would have two
teams for our loyal fans to cheer on to victory. Another proposed change for the upcoming season is the implementation of a ride share program for our fans. Carpools could be established for anyone who cannot make it to the game every week without assistance or folks who want to tailgate before and after the games. Stay tuned to this space for more information on both of these exciting changes.
Our Traveling Shuffleboard team is looking for experienced shuffleboard players to fill vacancies on our traveling team. This is a short season from January through March every Wednesday afternoon. All the traveling is close by

Save Our Strays by Sherry Plisch We have several instances of abandonment here in Del Tura. These are cats that are accustomed to living with and being cared for by humans. Cat who have only lived indoors are not equipped to live outdoors. They may have been declawed and will have little defense against predators. They do not have the skills to fend for themselves outdoors. Abandoning a pet cat outdoors is CRUEL. We have been asked: “What is the difference between a Stray and Feral cat?” This is how Alley Cat Allies explains it:

One last note…..should you have a cat, kitten or dog that you have to re-home for any reason, please don’t advertise them as “FREE to a good home”. Dog fighting rings are looking for animals to use as BAIT to train their fighting dogs. Please don’t let your animals be part of this.

By Charlene Ruotolo It has come to our attention that many of our residents do not know what the Thanksgiving and Christmas Basket program is all about. Del Tura’s Thanksgiving and Christmas food project started 38 years ago by Babe Swartz. She is no longer with us but her big heart is still thriving with us today. Since 2010 we have been sponsoring 70 families each year. These families are chosen by Nations Association Charities, Inc. In 1978 Nations was founded by a group of volunteers without assets or funds, just the desire to
serve those in need in Lee County. Its goal is helping families that are trying to better themselves by getting out of the “system”. Many of these families have jobs but are still having trouble making ends meet. I’d like to share with you just one of the many things they do. The children of these families may apply for scholarships that Nations awards each year. In order to apply they must maintain above average grades and they must do 300 or more hours of community service and agree to help with this scholarship program after they graduate,
so that other children can have the same opportunity they had. Stay tuned for the October issue of the Tower to learn how the 70 families are selected, what we provide to each family and most importantly, how to participate in this Del Tura act of kindness and generosity.
