From the President’s Desk Summer Greetings Everyone!

It’s hard to believe as I write this column that summer is already at its midpoint, and autumn is right around the corner. I sincerely hope that whatever makes your summer special has been everything you hoped for…..whether it is a traveling vacationing, enjoying all Del Tura has to offer, or simply spending time with your family. If you have attended our Tuesday coffee socials or watched them online (special thanks to Al Wells for the video), you are, no doubt, aware of the work that has gone on here this summer to keep our development beautiful. From the continuing work on tree and stump removal to ballroom upgrades, swimming pool repairs and more, Fred Taylor and his staff

have been working hard to stay on top of all the “challenges”. To that end, I’d like to remind each of you to view our coffee social video on line each week if you can’t be here in person. We try hard each Tuesday, to keep you all “in the loop” regarding projects and repairs here in Del Tura. Also, I want to remind you that we have a suggestion box located in the HOA office and in the rear of the Starlight Ballroom. If you have a question or a concern regarding a project, please use these boxes. We review the contents on a regular basis and will try our best to get you answers as the issues are addressed. Well, we might be in the “off season” here, but you’d never guess that from the number of activities that continue to happen. We’ve had dances, club

meetings, swimming programs and a fun filled Fourth of July Celebration that featured a huge golf cart parade, a luncheon, a poker run, bingo, and a fun assortment of additional games, as well as door prizes. I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to thank Linda and Erv Storma and their committee for an absolutely wonderful day. Finally, a few continued basic reminders to keep your home and car locked when not in use, and to have a “Caretaker” who can watch your property when you’re not there. If something such as your air conditioning unit fails and you are not aware of it, it can be catastrophic to your home. To quote the Boy Scouts of America…..”Be Prepared”. Of great importance, Hometown will also be implementing

an emergency phone service contact program for residents here in Del Tura so the management can communicate with all of you in the event of a major storm or other need to contact residents. As of the date of this Tower issue, if you haven’t already heard more about this, be sure to attend the Tuesday Coffee Social or view the video. We will share more information about the program as it becomes available. Each home site will be asked to provide ONE phone number as the primary contact number. Again, if you have not yet been contacted about this, you will shortly, so think carefully about which number you like to use. The program will work with land lines as well as cell phones. And of course you all know that we are in the midst of the hurricane season. Make sure you have a plan to protect

yourself in the event of a major storm. My sincere thanks to Bill Nezamis who recently held several presentations following our Tuesday coffee socials , to assist our residents with the necessities of storm preparation. I believe the plan is for Bill to hold several more presentations in the next couple months. Try to attend if you can. Bill does an excellent job. In the not too distant future, we will begin starting up our fall activities and welcoming many of our seasonal residents “home”. I hope those of you who’ve been north of us have had a wonderful summer and I look forward to your return to celebrate life here in Del Tura. As always, from where I sit, it’s…..just another day in paradise! Dave Adams HOA President

4th of July Thank You Golf challenges were headed by Rod Monroy with his team of Maureen Monroy, Ron Fluet, Bob Deem and Barb Jones. Great participation and lots of fun! In addition to the people noted above for games, thanks to Terry Thompson and Karen Rivet with Annette Karpe and Dennis Cottini who stepped in at the last minute when we needed extra help. Lou Rivit gave out the prizes. And it was a big help to have Betty Sheets to be in charge in the afternoon so I could enjoy my grandchildren. Thanks to all of you. Bingo was lead by Sherry Cottini with the support of Ed Fries and Joe Mussari. And the free popcorn? Thanks to Rich and Sue Symes for that added touch. And if I missed anyone I am truly sorry. Last but not least; thanks to Hometown America who gave us a donation again this year and to our own HOA who also supported us as usual…monetarily and in every other way. SAVE THE DATE: Sunday, December 9th Holiday Cart Parade at Sundown Erv and Linda Storma will lead the Parade and route set in stone…really!

Thanks to Kay Nezamis who put the signs on the cars and carts and Wendy Wells who also decorated carts with Kay as well as being the HOA Treasurer who handled all the money for us, and Bill Nezamis who was the official photographer. Staying under the radar were the judges, LeRoy and Sue Hall. Also thanks to Henry Moreau who did a great job getting all the Veterans for us to honor in the parade. And a very special thanks to the Veterans themselves! The Poker run was enjoyed by 130 people and was run by Mark and Susan Bryant along with Richard Donges. The people who were at the stations were Jan and Tom Hoffay with Noreen McLaughlin, Ginnie and Gerry Benjamins, Shelley and John Feindt, and the Stormas. 135 neighbors had a great lunch provided by The Brown Bag of North Fort Myers, who’s owners live right here in Del Tura. Kitchen volunteers were headed up by Sandy Boykin and assisted by Pat Casillo, Barb Schmoltze (who also ran a game), Marianne Denman, Betty Ewing-Cheney and Karen Stevenson.

Well another Independence Day has come and gone and I look back with gratitude to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make it a success. It really does “take a village”! First to Al Wells who did the promotional materials, printed the tickets and did the signs for the cars and carts. Jim Stenzel for his help on the Del Tura sign. Then Ginnie Benjamins who sold the tickets at Tuesday coffee and Sandy Boykin who sold them on Thursdays. And Nancy Adams who is there every time I turn around with whatever I needed. My friend Barb Schmoltze who ran around getting soda and decorations with me…Thank you to all of you. There was a team who got the games and supplies from storage and did the decorating. Dorathy and Garry Biddinger, Barb Schmoltze and Kay Nezamis (they also ran games) Sherry and Dennis Cottini and Sandy Palmer. Tony Martin and Pete Best came running when I called for help taking boxes back. I believe there were around 24 decorated carts, plus 4 cars, 4 vehicles from Chief Rice and our friends at the North Fort Myers Fire Department and 1 Bicycle! (Thank you Barb Jones)

Consider These Financial Tips for Single Women If you’re a single woman, most of your financial challenges and aspirations may resemble those of single men. Men and women face the same economic stress factors of modern life, and both groups have similar financial goals, such as the ability to retire comfortably. But women still face specific obstacles. You need to be aware of these challenges – and do everything you can to overcome them. For example, women still face a wage gap. In 2017, women earned 82% of what men earned, according to the Pew Research Center. However, the wage gap narrows among younger workers, and may even disappear for highly educated women, especially those in the STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Another financial concern for women is connected to their role as caregivers. Women spend an average of 12 years out of the workforce to care for children, elderly relatives and even friends, according to an estimate by the Social Security Administration. Other studies report different figures, but all the evidence points to women being the ones who take time off from work to care for loved ones. This means fewer contributions to Social Security, 401(k)s and other retirement plans. Faced with these and other issues, what can you do to help yourself move toward your important goals? Consider these steps: Develop good financial habits. Establishing good financial habits can pay off for you throughout your lifetime. These habits can include maintaining a budget, keeping your debts under control, and putting aside some money for a “rainy day.” Take advantage of available opportunities. If you work for an organization that offers a 401(k) or similar plan, contribute as much as you think you can afford. At the very least, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. And every time your salary goes up, increase the amount you invest in your plan. Also, think about opening an IRA, which, like a 401(k), can offer tax-advantaged investment opportunities. If you have children, you’ll also want to explore college savings vehicles, such as a 529 plan. Educate yourself about investing – and get professional advice. Some people think investing is just too complex and mysterious to be understandable. Yet, with patience and a willingness to learn, you can become quite knowledgeable about how to invest, what you’re investing in and what forces affect the investment world. And to help you create an investment strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you may also want to work with a financial professional. Discuss financial issues with your future spouse. If you get married or re-married, you’ll want to discuss financial issues with your new spouse. Specifically, you’ll want to answer questions such as these: What assets and debts do each of you bring to the marriage? Do you plan to merge your finances or keep them separate? Are your investment styles compatible? Do you have similar long-term goals? You and your new spouse don’t need identical views on every financial topic, but you both need to be willing to work together to advance your common interests. Ultimately, you have a lot of control over your own financial future. And making informed choices can help make that future a bright one.

FISH SUMMER NEWS

Here it is mid-summer and although many people are away from Del Tura, FISH is still hard at work. Please remember to call our FISH phone number (997-3474) if you need a ride to an appointment or you need to go to the grocery store. We would like to have 24 hours notice. However if you have an emergency appointment call us anyway. I hope you enjoyed the Storma’s Fourth of July. Thank you Linda and Erv. One of the carts in the parade was our FISH cart driven by Ruth Anten and navigated by Sue Symes. All the carts were decorated honoring the Fourth. At the luncheon following the parade and poker run winners were announced. The winner for best

original cart was Garry Biddinger. His reward was $30.00, which he kindly contributed to FISH. Thank you Garry. Moments later Jim McGilvary also donated his winnings. Thank you Jim. We really appreciate the fact that you gave to FISH. If you someone who has been in the hospital please let me know. My number is 239-322-9863. Fish would like to offer a dinner when they return home. The same if you know someone who has passed away. We would like to give a basket of fruit when family members come to visit. Do note: 61 FISH members turned in 1,161.5 hours for working for our residents in Del Tura. Those hours translate into over $24.00/hour grants that the state gives to Lee County to assist people who need some help

for food, medicine and housing. Thank you from FISH to those 61 members. On a personal note my husband Gerry and I would like to say congratulations to Yow Norton on becoming a citizen of the United States. Thank you, we are glad you are here. Enjoy the rest of the summer. See you in October. Fish will be having a flu clinic in the ballroom sometime in October.

of Directors and the administrative staff at the Largo business office. In 1962, the St. Petersburg City Council planned to enact an ordinance mandating that mobile home owners install tie-downs, a very expensive proposition then. Peggy Johnstone, upset by the impending mandate, contacted fellow mobile home owners and, on March 26th, 77 communities came together to defeat the ordinance. The FMO was founded that day with a clear vision in place: protect the interests of manufactured/mobile home owners in Florida.

At the Hydrant Del Tura’s dog of the month “MOOKIE”

2/18

by Jay and Liz Flanagan Find Mookie Last April at the Sheriff’s Animal Shelter, Liz and Jay Flanagan came to adopt a dog. I heard them say they had been looking for 3 weeks. They wanted a small, middle aged dog. I really didn’t fit that category. The Shelter had named me Presley, (yes like Elvis, not too thrilling) a mixed boxer breed and could weigh about 60 pounds have a chance, but I’ll have to act mature. I’m not fully grown, 30 pounds, so maybe they won’t think I’m too big, I won’t run and jump, since they don’t want a puppy,. They also picked my neighbor, Annie, a smaller, older dog. Actually, maybe that was alright because I knew she was a runner. Yes, she was smaller and older, but I hoped she had too much energy for them. Annie was first to visit the Flanagan’s outside. I don’t think it went well because all she did was Family Owned and Operated

run and pee on every tree. She

would not sit still long enough for them to pet her. When it was my turn to meet them, I did run. After all, I had to stretch my legs after being in a crate. And yes, I had to pee. But when I spotted the Flanagan’s on a bench, watching me and smiling, I ran over to them, jumped up and sat right between them. I could tell that I

had made the right move. They wanted to see Annie one more time, but Annie didn’t give them the time of day. When I had my second chance, I ran over to them, jumped up on the bench and sat between them. The Flanagan’s said, “I guess this is our new dog, he has chosen us.” The next afternoon, the Flanagan’s came back to get me. They hoped I was not too attached to my name. After a few day in my new home, I discovered that Jay is a HUGH Red Sox fan. They had looked at the names of the Red Sox players and picked Mookie Betts. That’s when I heard my new name for the first time, Mookie. I will be 2 years old soon, will weigh 50 pounds and love to play at the dog park in Del Tura twice a day. I have a lot of friends. When I get home, I am ready for a nap. I am so happy to have a forever family. I couldn’t be happier and I know the Flanagan’s are too, because they tell me so nearly everyday.

Health Korner - Food Poisoning News from Jean Hailes and Dietitian Stephanie Pirotta

sandwich/roll/leftover pizza that contain foods listed above • opened pre-packaged foods (can, carton or plastic container/bag), especially foods not refrigerated straight after they are opened.

Was it the reheated leftovers from three – or was it four or five – days ago? Or the sandwich you bought one day from that café you thought looked a bit dirty? Or maybe it was the salad that spent too long out of the fridge? Whatever the culprit, chances are you’ve been affected by food poisoning at some point in your life. Food poisoning affects an estimated 4.1 million people in Australia every year. The symptoms of food poisoning can range from mild to severe, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk, says dietitian Stephanie Pirotta. Food poisoning is caused by bacteria, toxins or viruses present in the food or drinks we consume. In Australia, food poisoning is commonly due to bacteria, namely the Campylobacter or Salmonella bacteria types.

What is the ‘temperature danger zone’?

What are some potentially ‘high risk’ foods of food poisoning?

Many people know that chicken or fish are common sources of food poisoning, but there are other common foods that can be potentially dangerous. Sources of food poisoning will usually look, smell and taste normal, so in this way it can be hard to detect. Some potentially high-risk foods include: • raw and cooked meat (including red meat, chicken, turkey and seafood) and foods containing these, such as a casserole or curry

• eggs and foods containing eggs, such as omelette or quiche • dairy products and foods containing these, such as custard or cheesecake • deli meats and smallgoods, such as ham or salami • cooked rice and pasta • prepared foods, such as coleslaw, pasta salad, rice salad, fruit salad and other ready-to-eat foods such as a

This is the temperature range in which harmful bacteria can grow to unsafe levels in food. The danger zone is between 5°C and 60°C. This means it is best to keep cold foods cold – in your fridge, set below 5°C – and hot food should be kept and served hot – at 60°C or hotter. Using a food thermometer is an easy way to measure food temperature. These can be bought at most supermarkets. For freshly cooked food that you’re not going to eat straight away, the Australian Food Safety Information Council advises to cool them to below the danger zone as quickly as possible: divide food into small shallow containers and place in the fridge or freezer as soon as it stops steaming.

Reflections

“The Sweetest Summers Spent with Gramma Rose”

by Dianne J. Roderick Gramma Rose lovingly referred to as “Granny”. Granny will always have a special place in my heart. Born in Pico, Azores she immigrated with her parents to the United States as a very young child in the early 1890’s. Her given name Rose exemplifies what my Gramma meant to me and to all of her grandchildren. She was as beautiful as the rose gardens that she tended to throughout her life. An amazing lady with a multitude of talents, many developed out of necessity due to the era that she grew up in. Granny shared her many gifts with us throughout our childhood; the most precious was her love and her connection to nature, specifically the ocean. The lessons learned from our experiences with this special lady were invaluable. We were very blessed! Before I reflect on those special times by the ocean I need to back up just a little and explain a few things about our Granny. She was brought up in a strict Portuguese home. Shortly after, they arrived in America they found work on

a farm in Dartmouth, MA. There were chores to be done by everyone; long days did not leave much time for being a child. Yet, when she spoke of her early years there was never a hint of negativity. Her love for her family, and naturespecifically those rare ocean visits were always at the forefront of any conversation when she reminisced about those days. Gramma Rose had committed her life to hard work, as a child and throughout her adult life, and she did just that, beautifully! Taking care of her family and pleasing everyone, putting their needs before her own, never complaining or regretting any part of it. Then to her surprise, just before the end of the school year in 1952, Mom and Dad asked her if she would like to spend school vacation with us at the beach. I can still see her face, not fully comprehending what she was being asked. Her face lit up, her blue eyes became as bright as stars, she finally responded, “Yes! When do we leave?” She glowedwe cheered, and of course prom-

ised we would definitely behave. Hmm… I will never forget those precious few years (1952-1955) that we spent near the ocean. Dad set up a big Army tent, lined it with cots, a place for Granny to cook and we were good to go! The whole family benefited from this great surprise! Aunts, Uncles, Cousins…Life was good until Hurricane Carol in 1954 decided

to put a bump on our road. She took everything from us that summer, materially that is. We learned at a very early age that things can be replaced and that there’s nothing more precious than life. We were fortunate to return for one last summer in ’55. Spending times with Granny was always fun but summers at the beach with Granny were incredible! The summers that we spent under her care were the most memorable summers of our lives! What were those lyrics that Nat King Cole sang about summer? Well, I think they were “hazy, crazy, lazy days…” but oh Baby, they were also carefree, adventurous, fun-loving times! Granny seemed to become younger- there was a new glow about her. Gone was the woman that wore the daily housedresses and aprons. In her place stood a woman wearing Bermuda shots and bathing suits, often frowned upon and unheard of in those days. There she stood wading knee deep in water, cradling my baby brother with one arm and collecting seashells with the other as I trailed along with my pail collecting our treasures.

? 0 0 $5

Each day that we spent at the beach was a great learning experience. She made it our very own summer school experience, complete with lots of love and laughter. We encountered many sea life species on our daily beach walks stopping to observe schools of shiners, mumpers, starfish, fiddler crabs, Horseshoe crabs, even Portuguese Men-of-War. What a grand day it was beach combing with Granny! Those were the summers of our life! There would be others but none would ever compare to the special summers spent with Gramma. Special times with an extraordinary lady could never be matched. I don’t have to close my eyes and try to visualize what those times looked like. All I need to do is go to my mind’s eye and instantly I am presented with a picture of our Granny walking by the seashore looking for treasures, glowing in the sunshine, and her charges following closely behind. A tug at my heartstrings reminds me once again how very blessed we all were.

HOUSEHOLD HELP/HINTS FOR EVERYONE • Flexible Vacuum: To get something out of a heat/air register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vaccum. It can be bent ot flattened to get into narrow openings. • Measuring Cups: Before you pour sticky substance into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the water but don’t dry the cup. add your ingredient (like peanut butter) and watch how easily it comes right out. • Foggy Windshield: Buy a chalk eraser and keep it in the glove compartment of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser...works better than a cloth! • Reopening Envelope: If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place the envelope in the freezer for an hour or two... it will unseal easily. • Goodbye Fruit Flies: Take a small glass and fill it with 1/2 with Apple cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. Flies are drawn to the cup then gone. • Get Rid of Ants: Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it home, can’t digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or two especially if it rains, but it is safe for pets and small children. • Dust removal from Silk flowers: Use your hair dryer to blow off the dust. • Dusting Lampshades: Use a soft dry paintbrush.

New PHONE NUMBERS
