Throw the dried paint in the can in the garbage. - Please be sure there is no wet paint in can - this is creating many paint spills on our brand-new roads when crushed in garbage truck. Oil-based paints are considered hazardous waste and must be taken to a recycling center. As summer departs, our community grows quickly with the return of our friends, the SnowBirds, as well as the new residents that arrive. Week to week, one can easily observe the increased attendance at every activity offered here at Del Tura. Everything seems to operate quite seamlessly to many of us, but while we are enjoying ourselves on the course, courts, tables, neighbors, restaurant or pub there are lots of things occurring behind the scenes. Although many things are done for most of us, either via volunteers or
our payment, there are a few responsibilities almost all of us share living in the Del Tura community. Two of those items are disposing of items, and reserving rooms at the clubhouse. The Cottini’s have put together a handy schedule (that you may want to clip or photo-click for future reference), that provides all you need to know about how to get rid of any “STUFF” you no longer want or need (see article above). Additionally, Ruth Ann Blevins has shared the rules required to reserve any of the rooms at the Del Tura Clubhouse (see page 17). Be sure to check out both handy lists, as they will not only make your
life easier, but will also increase happiness for everyone else here at Del Tura. There is not much worse than tripping over a neighbor’s trash as you arrive to set up the room you forgot to reserve properly for the group about to show up for that Saturday event you’ve struggled to plan for the past six months! Hopefully that will never occur, but these really are handy tips for all of us! Welcome back everyone, and let’s have a great season here at Del Tura!

President’s Korner… by Bette Ewing Cheney As the lazy days of summer disappear, we are reminded how quickly time passes. Remember how we could hardly wait to buy our own vehicle and be behind the wheel? We yearned to be graduated from high school and would soon be leaving home whether it was off to college, a new job, or the military. Wow! It was going to be a blast! Freedom! Parents were no longer in charge, and we were finally making our own decisions. We quickly learned it wasn’t quite the utopia we expected without our parent’s advice and guidance. We now had to diligently work to be successful. Then that certain person came along. A new chapter began for many: new home, new baby, job, promotions, new
careers, moves and responsibilities as parents ourselves. Many of us enjoyed our occupations, but with time, eagerly awaited retirement. New technologies became a large influence on our daily lives and work environments. Finally, retirement arrived, and Del Tura became our new home with friends from all over the USA and Canada. We made it! Del Tura, too, has gone through many phases. Just ask residents who have been here for 20 years or more. But it is still a wonderful place to live. This new phase of our lives is a time to slow down and enjoy our friends, amenities, activities, do things on our bucket list, and guard our health. Thanks for driving slower and keeping cars and trash barrels off the sidewalks. Your HOA Board
is currently engaged in discussions with management to improve conditions of the golf course, cart paths, and tee box areas left barren after Irma. Please keep those suggestions and comments coming into our two HOA suggestion boxes (Starlight ballroom and HOA office). They really help to steer our Board in the right direction and better work FOR YOU. It is imperative for ALL of our residents to join or rejoin FMO. The FMO is now developing plans to help control rising lot rents and they need our support. Our next Board meeting is on Wednesday, October 9th at 7:00pm. We need your attendance and input. See you there. Remember, “smiles are contagious.”

Don’t Chase Last Year’s Mutual Fund Category Winners The world of mutual funds can be confusing. With more than 9,000 funds on the market, how can you choose the ones that are right for you? One way to start is by considering the various categories of mutual funds – and there are quite a few of them: Small Cap Growth, Large Cap Growth, Large Cap Value, Diversified Emerging Markets, Foreign Large Cap Blend and more – the list is extensive, and for many people, confusing. However, with a little study, you can understand why these funds have their names – for example, a Small Cap Growth fund will contain stocks of smaller companies thought to offer growth potential. Once you know the goals of different categories of mutual funds, you can determine which ones fit into your overall investment strategy. This is important, because you want to ensure your portfolio is appropriately diversified. For example, if you find that almost all of your mutual funds come from the above-mentioned Small Cap Growth category, you may be taking on more investment risk than you’d like, because funds that offer the greatest growth possibilities also usually carry the highest degree of market volatility. Typically, you may be better off owning an array of mutual funds drawn from several different categories, with the percentage each category occupies in your portfolio based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can help reduce the effects of volatility, it doesn’t guarantee a profit or protect against losses in a declining market.) You might be tempted to choose categories by looking at which most recently outperformed the others, and just stick with those groups. But is this a good idea? It probably isn’t – and the main reason you shouldn’t chase performance this way is things change very quickly in the mutual funds arena. It’s quite possible – and has happened many times – that the top category last year can fall into one of the worst-performing ones this year, and vice versa. Consequently, your efforts to capture a winning trend may be futile. Of course, within the context of investing in various mutual fund categories, you still need to choose individual funds. And, as is the case with categories, you might be tempted to give considerable weight to a fund’s track record. But, similar to the situation with fund categories, “chasing performance” is typically not a good strategy – after all, last year’s “hot” fund may have cooled off considerably this year. Nonetheless, reviewing a fund’s longer-term track record can help you understand how it might perform through the ups and downs of the financial markets. Always keep in mind, though, that past performance can’t guarantee how the fund will perform in the future. Mutual funds are popular investments – and for good reason. Since each fund generally contains dozens of securities, you get a degree of diversification you can’t achieve from owning individual stocks or bonds. And, as discussed above, you can diversify further by owning funds from several categories. Just remember, though, that as you build your mutual fund portfolio, don’t get caught up in last year’s results – because old news just may not be that relevant today. Mutual fund investing involves risk. Your principal and investment return in a mutual fund will fluctuate in value. Your investment, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than the original cost.

Reflections “Paradise”
By Dianne J. Roderick
Have you ever listened-really listened to the lyrics of “Another Day in Paradise” by Phil Collins? The theme speaks of “homelessness”; it’s about a woman that has been worn down by life. She’s alone on the street asking for help only to be shunned by many people passing by. This unfortunate soul continues to reach out and time after time her pleas continue to bounce off of deaf ears. It’s very sad…an issue that has always had me asking over and over again… Why are there so many people without hope for a better life in our country, especially with so many that have so much to share? I guess what’s bringing this even closer to my heart and thoughts is the impact of last month’s devastating hurricane in the Bahamas. “Just think about it…it’s just another day for you and me in Paradise.”
I know that we can’t solve society’s problems on our own but we can make a definite impact together, and we do! Each year we come together as a Del Tura family and brighten Thanksgiving and Christmas for many needy families in our area. Throughout the year we raise money for var“Oh, think twice it’s just another day for you and me in Paradise.” ious causes. There’s no bigger heart than a Del Tura heart! My point is what are we doing on a daily basis? Many of us, myself included, at one time or another has turned away thinking we can’t do anything for someone. Somehow we convince ourselves that someone else will come along to help and so we move on hoping in our hearts that some way, somehow this person will be helped.
“Oh, think twice it’s just another day for you and me in Paradise.” I have no doubt that each of us will take the time and follow their hearts to do what they can to help the families that are struggling to get back on their feet in the aftermath of Dorian. I pray, as we all do, that their faith will get them through this horrific time. “Just think about it…it’s just another day for you and me in Paradise.” It really makes you stop and think how much we all take for granted. We are truly blessed to have made it here to “Paradise” but we must do our part on a daily basis to remind ourselves of that. The less fortunate sometimes just need a word of encouragement or a sign of hope from us that things will be better. Many of us have been where the less fortunate are and many of us have not had to endure hard times. Let’s face it we are all here on this earth for a short time but we can leave making a powerful exit!

Fish Of Del Tura News Fish Transportation Alert
By Ginnie Benjamins
The FISH Transportation line has been available to our friends in Del Tura for many years and is evolving. Numerous volunteers have made themselves available to transport those in need of rides to doctor appointments and other limited services such as food shopping and other convenience stops while being otherwise transported. Unfortunately, on occasion, we have some residents who are burdened to find multiple rides over a period of time which can become an “overload” problem for those who book the rides and for the volunteer drivers, as well. During the busy winter season when our community grows vastly, understandably we are challenged in our mission. Likewise, in the summer months, many of our volunteers, bookies and drivers, are on vacation, so another challenge exists. Because of these and other situations that have come to our attention, the FISH Board and the Transportation Committee have agreed on the following policies: 1. Limitation of two rides per person, per week. 2. If you have booked a ride, and it has been confirmed with your driver, please let that person know if your status for pick-up has been changed. If the driver arrives at your house and cannot raise you by knocking, calling out your name, or attempting
to reach you by phone, then in order to be sure you are not in trouble, the driver will call 911 to investigate your status. Unfortunately, we have had a few incidences here in Del Tura, where someone has fallen or had a medical emergency that has not been discovered in time to provide them with the help they needed. You are much too special to us to allow that to happen. 4. If you live alone, and especially have health issues, we suggest that you provide FISH Transportation with a phone number of a relative or a neighbor (who may have a key to your house) so that we can contact them if we suspect you may be in trouble. 5. If you or someone in your family is to be transported by car to a doctor’s appointment, and they are not able to get into the vehicle without being lifted, be aware that our FISH volunteers are not trained to lift him/her into the vehicle nor are they legally able to do this. There are insurance implications and liabilities for both the driver, and the one being transported. If we can accommodate you, according to the polices above, we will attempt to provide you with information regarding local transportation services, some inside and some outside of our community. The Volunteers of FISH Transportation are both grateful and honored to be of help to you, our friends, here in Del Tura. Please do not hesitate to call us on the FISH line (997-3474) if we can be of service to you.
Fruit Tree Project By Sherry Plisch It has been a slow year for the Del Tura Fruit Tree Project committee. We had no fruit to pick from March through June of 2019. Our fruit trees in Del Tura are aging out and dying or have been cut down. Even with that being the case, we were able to pick mangos, starfruit and avocados in July and August. Our year to date, we’ve picked 2,254 pounds of fruit, compared to last year’s total of 3,947 pounds of
fruit. The fruit was delivered to the CCMI soup kitchen. We would like to thank the following residents for their donations: Susie & Richard Roiger, Sandy Mulvaney, Woody & Dorothy Cook, Jim & Eileen Scott and Marsha & Jim Hinchberger. We’d also like to thank our dedicated group that gets out early mornings to help with the picking. This year, they are: Joe Pollock, Diana Camp, Larry Hodge, Gail

What To Do During Retirement (An Extract from Art Keen’s Blog) You have worked all your life and now it is time to enjoy retirement. Okay, so now what do you do? It has been my limited experience that many of us don’t really know! We have some ideas, made generalized plans like playing golf, reading, moving to Del Tura, traveling or perhaps just relaxing but for the most part, we have no real plan for what to do. Having recently retired at the ripe old age of 59, I was faced with this dilemma. This is one of the reasons I decided to try my hand at blog writing. I have always fancied myself as a person who could communicate so what better thing to do with my new-found time than to communicate? To that end, one year after hanging up my work clothes, I am going to attempt to lay out some groundwork here for the newly retired and the seasoned veteran as well. I am not an expert in anything at this point, but I have some thoughts that might have merit. Try them if you like!
1) Try your hand at writing - Not everybody has a flair for the written word, so I am not advocating you write the next great American Novel nor am I saying that blogging is for you. What I do think you should do is get into the almost lost art of writing things down. In today’s world of technology, we have virtually abandoned the pen and paper. I find if I write things down it is way easier to remember them. I have even lost track of what day it is! At least keep a calendar so you remember when to put out the trash and when your next doctor’s appointment is. (EDITOR’S NOTE: See the NEW Creative Writing Class article). 2) Write an autobiography One of the things I regret in my life is knowing precious too little about the lives of my parents. I have recollections of the times I was in their lives but know little or nothing about their lives before I came into the picture. You know, the fun facts. Tidbits about their childhood, where they traveled to, what they did before they met. I
became painfully aware of this fact when my father passed away. We never did “adult” things. We never talked about what men talk about when they are sharing a drink or playing a round of golf. Consider writing some of those things down before you forget them. Your kids will surely enjoy knowing the things that never came up while you were raising them. 3) Make a bucket list - I just got done saying that too many of us don’t have a plan for retirement. The basis for a plan could be a bucket list. This list should create a more concise plan of action for the future. Never been on a cruise? Put that on the list. Want to visit Europe, the Grand Canyon, Hawaii? Write it down. Plan your life, live your plan. (Important note: Make sure you consult with your significant other if you have one. This could be a source of ideas or a deterrent from planning things to do together which they have no interest in doing.) continued on page 13

4) Tend to your health needs - Visit your doctor and get a physical or at least a checkup. Address the things you might not have had time or opportunity to take care of when you were working. When symptoms are exhibiting themselves is not the best time to seek medical attention!! I could tell you countless stories about people who didn’t go to the doctor until they hurt and too often, it was too late. Trust me on this one. Do what you need to ensure healthy living for as long as you can. 5) Take your time - We don’t know how much time we have left but rushing into things creates stress we don’t need at this time in our lives. Relax, plan, save up if you have to. Last but not least, have that conversation with your loved ones. Make sure they are aware of your wishes and your financial positions. Confirm that they know what to do if you suddenly become unable to manage your own affairs. It’s never too early to verify that everybody’s future is addressed along with your own. Peace of mind is worth a lifetime of earnings.

At the Hydrant Good Time at the “Small” Dog Park By “Fluffy” Smith (as interpreted by Jan (John) Brassem Hi. I’d like to talk about the good times we are having at Del Tura’s Small Dog Park. We should be thanking Mr. Fred and Del Tura. My name is Fluffy. Every day, between 4 and 6 pm, Terry, my Chauffeur, takes me to Del Tura’s Small Dog Park. Terry drives me in his “wheels”. He tells me it’s a Cadillac. I don’t believe him! We love the park. We can run, race, wrestle, lie around, especially lie around, and er….poop. All of our Chauffeurs pick it up of course – like the rules say. They throw
it in the nearby garbage can. We also like to scream and yell at the bear-looking dog in the Big Dog Park next to us. What a racket! It’s hilarious: except when the big fellow decides to bark back. I get a little nervous. Terry tells me to stop worrying. The big bear just wants to play with us, and….he can’t get through the iron fence even if he wants to! When it gets hot, we lie in the shade, on the cool stones, under the awning. My friends usually take a snooze in front of their Chauffeurs feet. When it really gets hot, all of those Chauffeurs seem to have great heated discussions.
Now that I think of it, all this fresh air and exercise helps me get a great night’s sleep. We all love to make new friends, especially if they like to run and play. Save Our Strays - Why TNR? By Sherry Plisch Our articles about trap-neuter-return often explain how TNR is the only humane and effective way of reducing the feral and stray cat population. We describe the health benefits of the cats being spayed or neutered and vaccinated. We explain the benefits to the community as a whole when the cats roam, fight and yowl less. These are all reasons we should TNR. Now we want to explain why we must TNR. Because these are OUR cats!! Cats living outdoors are not an
invasive species. They didn’t get here by hitching a ride in the hull of a ship or in a box of fruit. They are here because the lady next door refuses to fix her cat and lets him out every night. They’re here because when your neighbors moved, they left their cat behind. They’re here because when the sweet old man down the block, who adored his cats, passed away, his family threw them out on the street as if they were trash. These are OUR pets who we have let down and the generations they have produced trying to survive the world we’ve abandoned
them into. The cat overpopulation “problem” was caused by people who just didn’t care. It can only be remedied by people who do care. That’s what SAVE OUR STRAYS is all about. (Adopted from words by Homeless Cat Network).

One-Tank Trips by Bette Ewing-Cheney Last month, we visited Heritage Village in Largo, Florida. I hope some of you have made this trip. Doug and I were there in July and then went just south to John’s Pass for lunch. It was a great day. Let’s go now to Solomon’s Castle in Ona, Florida NW of Arcadia. A man by the name of Solomon constructed this building in 1972. He had previously purchased the land without knowing that it was mostly swampland. Because of this, he decided to build a vertical structure. The castle was
originally intended as storage for his sculptures that he sold. He covered his building with used, shiny aluminum, printing plates from local newspaper companies, and formed bricks from poured concrete. He built it in the shape of a castle complete with towers, ramparts, and medieval style windows. He also included living quarters, a kitchen, and upstairs bedroom with a balcony. Solomon had a genius for crafting unusual art from used metal, auto parts and household items. His imagination never slept. One of his unique creations was a
cannon that fired toilet plungers. The castle is stuffed with all kinds of unique art objects he created that are behind every nook and cranny. Solomon always enjoyed taking his visitors on tours as he entertained them with jokes and stories. Before he died he had also completed a replica of a Spanish galleon “boat in a moat” restaurant complete with light house and gift shop. Hours of operation are: Tuesday thru Sunday, 10 to 4, closed Mondays. For more info phone 863-494-6077. See you there.

SPORTS & EXERCISE 18 Hole Women’s Golf Association By Carol Marra Welcome back! Steve and I often return in early to mid-September. Two years ago, we were greeted by Irma and this year by Dorian. It looked like Orlando was going to be hit so we came back a few days early in case our son and family needed to leave there but all is well in Florida for now. Hopefully, in the future, we can have less spectacular returns! Since my last Tower article some of the ladies have scored holes-in-one. The list includes Rose Egizi on 7 West on May 9th, Bertie Dugo on 7 North June 18 and two days later, Mary Ciezadlo on the same hole! Congratulations to the three ladies. September 5th was my first day back playing with our Association. All 9 of us went out in typical hot and humid weather. The course was a bit wet but in beautiful shape after a lot of rain in August. Rita Szukhent had a very nice round
including winning all the money for the chip-ins (2 weeks’ worth) and closest to the pin! Nice going, Rita. September 12th was our last summer scramble with the 9-hole group. After the scramble we met at Burnt Store for lunch. The summer version of “9 and Dine” has been a lot of fun. And, I have to say, 9 holes in the summer heat works for many of us! Thank you to Paula and Justine for organizing this event. Have you just moved to Del Tura and been thinking about joining our Association? Please call Kay Rolader at (239) 292-4964. She can give you the information you will need to become a part of our group. Every year there are rule changes. Many are very hard to understand, and most don’t affect us. But some are relatively easy to follow and help speed up play. One is leaving the flag in when you putt. There is some debate about
this one. Most people are fine with leaving it in, but if someone is not, don’t debate with her, just accommodate. Easy! If you are leaving the pin in, make sure it is straight. Watching the ball bounce off a crooked pin is a bit disheartening! Another easy rule is the change to a maximum of 3 minutes to search for a lost ball. Now, everyone should try to help look for it. You also should glance at your watch and announce the time so we all know when the 3 minutes are up. A lost ball often happens on the drive so try to pay close attention when your fellow golfers are teeing off. Paula sent out the calendar last spring. Hopefully, you have looked it over and have marked the fall and winter tournaments. It would really be great to have as many ladies as possible participating in the Club Championship, President’s Cup and Member-Member. Win or lose, they are a lot of fun! Okay, nervous fun, but still!
9 Hole Women’s Golf Association By Ann Abramczy Some interesting issues have developed as the result of the “New Rules of Golf.” Initially, most golfers seemed to leave the flag in place when removal of the flag from the cup was made optional. Recently, the Pros are starting to remove the flag more often. No reason was given for this change. My thought is the cup looks bigger without the flag. What do you think? What are the non-pro’s doing? An issue has developed when the flag is left in place. Some players that leave the flag in place
while putting often remove their ball without removing the flag stick. This is causing damage to the area around the cup. The rough edges may cause a player to miss putts when the ball loops around the cup and out of the hole. It is a problem that many grounds people have found. And as a player my request is: please take the flag stick out of the cup while you remove your ball! I’ve written about fun golf games before. Here’s one that can be used for tournaments. Called “Cha, Cha, Cha”, it’s a 4-person game. Each team member plays their own ball throughout the 9 or
18 holes. On the first hole (Cha); the lowest score counts as the team score. On the second hole (Cha, Cha); the two lowest scores count as the team score. And finally, on the third hole (Cha, Cha, Cha); the three lowest scores count as the team score. Then the sequence is repeated on the fourth hole and throughout the game. Sounds like a good change of pace game. The Snow-Birds will be back soon, me included, and the Nine Hole League will be growing again. Looking forward to seeing everyone!
Wednesday Traveling Shuffleboard “PLAYERS WANTED” Our Traveling Shuffleboard team is looking for experienced shuffleboard players to fill vacancies on our traveling team. This is a short season from January through March

SPORTS & EXERCISE Amigos Softball By Art Keen An organizational meeting for interested players (both male and female) will be held in the Royal Palm room on October 10th at 4:00pm. It is extremely important that if you or somebody you know is interested in playing this spring that you attend this meeting. In order to be eligible to compete, team members must
have reached age fifty before the start of the season, complete an eligibility form and reside or rent in our community for a minimum of three months during the scheduled playing dates. Our goal is to field two teams this season because we do have a lot of interest in our community from both a player and spectator perspective. If you cannot make this meeting, or you are not yet
here for this meeting, in the case of our seasonal residents then we ask very strenuously that you get us a commitment note, text or email informing us of your intent. We are going to limit our ranks to 30 players. Our first practice is scheduled for Sunday October 27th with tryouts following and the season beginning on or about Jan 5th and running until March 24th.
Friday Shuffleboard League By Jack Blevons Summer is over and we are either back in beautiful Del-Tura or on our way back. We had a good Summer up in Wisconsin near our families. Took a while for Summer to get there as May & June were on the cool side that I liked to call cold myself. Also had a lot of rain & a lot of storms like there were in many other parts of our country. I guess a lot of rain down in Florida too which I always thought was mostly a good thing to fill our lakes & wells with water before the dry-Winter season sets in with no or very little rain-fall. Anyhow, just wanting to let everyone know that we plan to start League-play again on November 8th. It always
takes a while to get in contact with everyone to make sure who is playing & who isn’t so I can get all the teams right, rosters made up as well as schedules & what flights everyone will be playing in. Then need to get everything typed up & copies made. Lots of behind the scenes work as I call it. Will have a short meeting on the courts on Friday November 1st to pass out our usual paperwork & welcome any new members. I don’t expect any changes from last year. Dates we won’t be playing will be mentioned in the handouts that all league members will receive. I will also have contacted by e-mail all those members who have provided me with e-mail
addresses. One other reminder, we are always in need of people who would like to be on our sublist. A lot of people like to play but rather not be committed to playing every Friday so being a sub might be what you would like to do. We are always in need of subs & also, when teams decide it’s time to retire, then openings become available for new teams as well. If you are interested in either option, you may contact myself or Janet by phone, 239-731-0892 which is our home phone. We do have an answering-machine so if we don’t answer, please leave a message & we will return your call. Looking forward to seeing you all back on the courts again soon.
Pickleball By Art Keen On Monday 8/26 the pickleball group invited Scott Tingly, a Pickleball professional to come and give interested players a lesson. The session ran from 8am to 11am and I, for one, believe it was the best instructional session I have ever attended and as a retired Teacher, I have been to a lot of instructional sessions. Scott asked how many homes we have here in Del Tura and how many of those residents play Pickleball. Sadly, our numbers are small compared to many other 55+ communities.
This is not to say that we are bad, only that we have not gotten the word out that Pickleball is alive and well here in Del Tura and if you are looking for something to raise your heartbeat a little and maybe even reduce your waist size a bit, Pickleball may just be the thing for you! Ages of our players range from the mid 50’s to well into the 70’s and everybody is competitive. Costs to play the game include a pickleball paddle and a pair of tennis shoes so for the cost of 2 or three rounds of golf, you could be the best equipped player on the
court and the best thing is, there is no cost for playing! That’s right, you can become a member here, play every day and never spend a penny on court fees. During the off season* (right now) we play every morning (weather permitting) beginning around 7:15 and frequently during the evenings as well starting around 6:00pm so why not consider coming out and seeing what this is all about. Remember, Time and tide wait for no man * In season hours and days may change.

NEW TO DEL TURA Creative Writers Group By Nancy Davy & Dianne Roderick We’d like to take a moment to make you all aware of a new opportunity for the residents of Del Tura. The Creative Writers Group will meet on the second and fourth Thursday each month from 2 – 3:30 PM in the Card Room. We are dedicated to those of you
who like to express yourself through the written word, as well as those who would like to learn to. We will explore writing in freestyle, then gradually turn to learning poetic form, all the while focusing on the fun of the challenges and the emotional release that writing can provide. Please consider joining us!
For more information, please contact: Nancy Davy 239-599-4631, ndavy01@gmail.com Dianne Roderick 239-5434261, dianne4246@msn.com Our scheduled meetings for October are on October 10th and October 24th.
(LINE DANCING) Did you hear music and laughter coming from the area of the Starlight Ballroom on Mondays this summer? That was the Del Tura Line Dancers. We had 23 guys and gals who were new to line dance and were learning popular line dances like the “Cupid Shuffle”, “Electric Slide” and
“Boot Scootin’ Boogie”. During the six-week classes, they also were introduced to “Havana Cha”, “Hippy Dippy Mambo”, “On the Loose”, and “Blurred Lines”. We had a lot of fun!! A new class will start on Sunday’s starting October 20 thru November 24 at 7pm. The first 30 minutes of the class will be for beginners where we will repeat the dances we learned this

Thursday Night Bingo Writing this for the October Tower I guess it’s safe to say, Summer is over for another year and Janet & I will be on our way back to beautiful Del Tura after spending the Summer months up in Wisconsin, close to both of our families. These past months have gone by fast for us as we look back, but as we all know, we cannot slow down Father Time. Hopefully you all have had a good Summer and hopefully all us snow-birds will be returning back to Del Tura soon, because on October 17th, HOA-sponsored Thursday Night Bingo will start up again. Janet & I are looking forward to running it again for the enjoyment of all of you & we are hoping to have our same crew back helping us do that. As soon as we get unpacked & settled in, we will contact all our team members to set up a meeting

Del Tura Holiday Basket Program It has come to our attention that many of our residents do not know what the Thanksgiving and Christmas Basket program is all about. Del Tura’s Thanksgiving and Christmas food project started 38 years ago by Babe Swartz, who’s big heart has continued on after passing. Since 2010 we have sponsored 70 families annually. Families are chosen by Nations Association Charities, Inc. that was founded in 1978 by a group of volunteers without assets or funds, just a desire to serve those in need in Lee County. Its goal: helping families that are trying to better themselves by getting out of the “system”. Many of these families have jobs but are still having trouble making ends meet. I’d like to share just one of the many things they do. The children of these families may apply for scholarships that Nations awards
each year. In order to apply they must maintain above average grades AND do 300 or more hours of community service AND agree to help with this scholarship program after they graduate, so other children can have the same opportunity. The 70 Del Tura families are chosen by an extensive screening process. They must sign up by a certain deadline. This past year over 300 families signed up. They must prove that they are in need and provide birth certificates to prove that all the children they are listing are theirs. From this list 70 families are chosen. Race does not play any role in the selection process. For those that do are not familiar with this program, the following is our process: We place flyers on every house to tell you when your block person
will be by to pick up your donations (non-perishable food, money or both). At Thanksgiving, each family receives at least 3 boxes of non-perishable food, a 10-12 lb. turkey ,bread, butter, potatoes, onions and eggs purchased from Publix with your donations. The same thing happens at Christmas except instead of a turkey they receive a 7-8 lb ham. Also, each child, newborn to 12, receives a toy or game. Children 13-19 receive an article of clothing. Adult children, living at home, also receive an article of clothing. Moms, Dads, Grandparents living in the home receive a gift as well. It has humbled us and made us thankful that we are able to help people who are truly trying to better themselves and their families. Thank you Del Tura Community, for supporting this wonderful project and we hope everyone will participate this year. Charlene & Ron Ruotolo, Betty Scheets, Ruth Anten
