From the President’s Desk February already! Traffic shows it, too! January was busy – as usual, with a show, health fair, fashion show, night at the races, and more. February has Valentine’s Day Dance, the repertory company play (a comedy called Suitehearts), and likely more that I haven’t heard about yet. As you may have noticed from the front page, THE TOWER will be needing a new editor and co-editor beginning in June. I just want to

take enough space to thank Doris, Ginnie, and the rest of the staff for the great job they’ve done for a lot of years. What we need now are people to pick up that ball and keep it moving, so we’re hoping to find replacements well ahead of the June date so they can learn how to do it. If you have an interest in putting the paper together, or even better, some experience in that area, please contact the HOA Board. Just to spice up the deal,

we will pay you twice as much as we’ve been paying them all these years. Chances are this may be my last blurb. There will be a new HOA president before the next deadline, so you won’t have to put up with my rants. But ranting is fun for me, so … 16 mph speed limit; stop signs; no parking on sidewalks; etc; etc; etc. Al Wells, HOA President

Lee Tran has a passport Americans with Disabilities Act service. There is an application that you can get from Lee Tran. The service is for persons with physical, cognitive, visual and other disabilities, which functionally prevent them from using Lee Tran Fixed Route bus service either permanentwly or under certain conditions. The ADA eligibility requirements for service, a disability must actually prevent the use of the Lee Tram buses and the origin and destination of your trip must be within ¾ of a mile of a Fixed Route. After the paperwork is completed you will be required to participate in an inperson, face-to-face assessment in order to determine your eligibility and to discuss the program. There are three categories under which a person can be eligible.

Category 1: Eligibility includes those persons, who, because of their disability, cannot independently use a regular, accessible bus. Category 2: Elegibility is based on the accessibility of vehicles and terminals/stops. (i.e., a person is able to use the regular bus, but it is not accessible). Category 3: Eligibility pertains to situations in which a person cannot travel independently to or from a bus stop. If you are approved for ADA paratransit transportation, you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility ID Card for ADA paratransit services and a letter outlining how to use the services. You will receive door-to-door transportation. Lee County sponsors the cost of the trip, and your transportation will cost you a $3.00 fare every time you board the vehicle.

Reservation must be made two or more days in advance. Your Licensed Physician will need to fill out a form. You will need a copy of any identification with your date of birth. You must submit the original forms; no copies and then it may take three weeks to hear from them. If you are denied you may appeal, you must make a written request within sixty days. A hearing will then be scheduled. You must contact the Passport Lee Tran at 239-432-2035 or at their main office at 3401 Metro Parkway, Fort Myers 33901. Ask for the “Application for the ADA Paratransit Service”. I am actually not sure how many people here in Del Tura would be eligible since FISH is here to drive you, but if you feel that this may help, give it a try.

FISH Fruit Tree Picking Project By Rick Rudzik and Sherry Plisch, Co-Chairpersons This is the latest (January 7) update from our committee. We like to keep our residents apprised of our progress and to give proper, well-deserved special thanks to our resident fruit donors. Without these donors the needy of our county would not receive the fruit they need to supplement their diet. To date (our picking season runs from October 1 to September 30 each year) the team has picked 1262 pounds of Avocados, Star Fruit, Lemons, Limes, Oranges and Tangerines this year. For the month of December we picked 756 pounds.

We had four volunteers and we picked from the residences of David and Karen Toothman, Rick Roche, Millie Hanahan, Paul and Lucy Schaefer, Margaret and Hank Zanger, Jerry Still, Bill and Kay Nezamis, Lynn Mack, Bertie Dugo, Bill Smith, Irene Paton, Rick Morgan, Michele Izzo, Sandy Mulvaney and Bob and Janis Kapus. The fruit was delivered to the soup kitchen in Lee County and was greatly appreciated. We wish we could predict the availability of the fruit to better utilize the twenty-five plus volunteers we have on our committee. They are eager to get going to pick. Spread the word. There

are a lot of residents who are not aware of what we do. We would appreciate the help identifying potential trees that have become available. Homes that are empty or the residents are not here yet are possible sources for the committee to pick. We will seek permission where necessary. We are really proud of our residents for their generosity and concern! Since this report we have had more requests to pick resident’s fruit trees. Keep those requests coming! Call Rick at 543-3662 or Sherry at 567-0538. We welcome back our seasonal residents! God bless you and thank you very much!

What’s Smarter - Paying Off Debts or Investing? If you’re just starting out in your career, you will need to be prepared to face some financial challenges along the way – but here’s one that’s not unpleasant: choosing what to do with some extra disposable income. When this happens, what should you do with the money? Your decisions could make a real difference in your ability to achieve your important financial goals. Under what circumstances might you receive some “found” money? You could get a year-end bonus from your employer, or a sizable tax refund, or even an inheritance. However the money comes to you, don’t let it “slip through your fingers.” Instead, consider these two moves: investing the money or using it to pay off debts. Which of these choices should you pick? There’s no one “right” answer, as everyone’s situation is different. But here are a few general considerations: •

Distinguish between “good” and “bad” debt. Not all types of debt are created equal. Your mortgage, for example, is probably a “good” form of debt. You’re using the loan for a valid purpose – i.e., living in your house – and you likely get a hefty tax deduction for the interest you pay. On the other hand, nondeductible consumer debt that carries a high interest rate might be considered “bad” debt – and this is the debt you might want to reduce or eliminate when you receive some extra money. By doing so, you can free up money to save and invest for retirement or other goals.

Compare making extra mortgage payments vs. investing. Many of us get some psychological benefits by making extra house payments. Yet, when you do have some extra money, putting it toward your house may not be the best move. For one thing, as mentioned above, your mortgage can be considered a “good” type of debt, so you may not need to rush to pay it off. And from an investment standpoint, your home is somewhat “illiquid” – it’s not always easy to get money out of it. If you put your extra money into traditional investments, such as stocks and bonds, you may increase your growth potential, and you may gain an income stream through interest payments and dividends.

Consider tax advantages of investing. Apart from your mortgage, your other debts likely won’t provide you with any tax benefits. But you can get tax advantages by putting money into certain types of investment vehicles, such as a traditional or Roth IRA. When you invest in a traditional IRA, your contributions may be deductible, depending on your income, and your money grows on a tax-deferred basis. (Keep in mind that taxes will be due upon withdrawals, and any withdrawals you make before you reach 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but your earnings are distributed tax-free, provided you don’t take withdrawals until you reach 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. Clearly, you’ve got some things to ponder when choosing whether to use “extra” money to pay off debts or invest. Of course, it’s not always an “either-or” situation; you may be able to tackle some debts and still invest for the future. In any case, use this money wisely – you weren’t necessarily counting on it, but you can make it count for you.

The late author, David Viscott once wrote this quote, “to love and be loved is like feeling the sun from both sides”. The more I read this beautiful, mind boggling, soul-searching quote, the more I reflect on its meaning. I always thought that one could not stand without the other. If you give love, shouldn’t you be loved? Then again I would be thinking about it from my perspective. Was he quoting it specifically for romantic relationships? As I continue to ponder on that question I realize that relationships don’t always happen that way. That led me to think about how, in many relationships, the two remain sadly separate for various reasons. There are a few reasons that I can think of that could support why the two are viewed as being separate. One that comes to mind would be a fear of being hurt again. Many people who have

been hurt once too often find it safer to give their love rather than have their hearts broken once again. They seem to feel receiving, or accepting love from others causes one to put down their guard fearful to take the chance to trust once more. So they make the

comfortable choice of being the giver, secretly hoping that someday they’ll be able to allow love to reenter into their hearts again. People who give of themselves unselfishly tend to forget

about their own needs. They have thought unselfishly about others for many years and have never taken the time to realize that their happiness counts, too! Loving others unconditionally is the greatest gift we can give each other and is definitely what every relationship needs but not at the expense of losing oneself in the process. Wouldn’t it be great to have a love/be-loved relationship? One that gives you “that sun from both sides feeling”! Maybe many of us have felt that, or will experience that feeling in their relationships and that is wonderful! Love given and received is without a doubt the most wonderful feeling in the world. One that the world needs much more of! Without it we could not thrive and continue to inspire others to share their love. May the warmth of your love surround you always...

Mr. Fred Taylor, General Manager, Del Tura Community

Dec, 30, 2016

Dear Fred, As one of the more senior members of the Canadian contingent, here in Del Tura, I would like to express the appreciation of over 40 home owners for the installation of our national flag. I think all of us feel very fortunate to have discovered this beautiful community in which we spend up to half the year. While we Canadians, regretfully, do not display the patriotism of our American cousins, the display of our flag gives us a tangible reminder of our home and native land. Thank you so much. Ron Emo

Book Review Unlucky 13 (Women’s Murder Club) by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro More fatalities occur and Lindsey and Rich are following all leads in a rush to prevent more deaths. The perpetrator contacts the owners and makes monetary demands to be met if more murders are to be avoided. Meanwhile Yuki and Brady get married and go off on a luxury cruise that turns into a nightmare when the ship is hijacked. Lots more murders and gore here too. Meanwhile, again, an old adversary, MacKensie “Mackie” Morales returns with still more murders involved and seeking revenge for the loss of her lover, a past case involving Lindsey. By Rich Symes In past years, many of our residents have become members of CERT. However, due to age, illness or relocation, we have lost many of these members. We need new volunteers to help our community in case of a disaster such as a hurricane, tornado or small fire.

The North Fort Myers Fire Department across the street on Trail Dairy trains and oversees many teams for first aid, triage and search and rescue. I was a fire fighter in Brighton, NY for thirty years and when attending the CERT training, I am still learning. The CERT basic training course will start on Tuesday

February 28, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. at the North Fort Myers Fire station on Trail Dairy Circle. Training will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays ending on March 23. The culminating activity will be a fun annual picnic on Thursday, March 30, at 10:00 a.m. If anyone is interested, please contact me, Rich Symes, at 239-731-1308.

Mister Fix-It By Jim Stenzel Bugs. I’m not sure where you might go to live that doesn’t have bug issues, but Southwest Florida sure isn’t one of them! The bugs we have to contend with in this part of the state are annoying, damaging to our homes, and carriers of disease. We’ll never eliminate insects from our environment, but there are simple and concrete steps we can take to minimize the impact of such pests on our lives. Roaches, ants, and termites are all enemies of your life and your home, but paradoxically they need you in order to survive and thrive. The principal message I want to emphasize to you is that your vigilance in eliminating or preventing the conditions that invite insects into your home, is more important than keeping your house chemically treated with insecticides.

CELEBRATING

If you live in Florida, you have to deal with cockroaches ( for the record, the roaches we most commonly have in our homes are NOT true palmetto bugs which live exclusively outdoors and feed on rotting vegetation, but are American cockroaches.) Your defense against cockroaches should revolve around denying them entry to your home, and denying them food and water. Cockroaches can fit through very small openings, so it’s important to seal up any cracks at the bottom of walls or around doors and windows, holes in the floor where plumbing comes through, making sure door sweeps are intact etc. Roaches are difficult to starve because they can feed on food on floors, dirty dishes in sinks, cardboard and paper, and dead insects. Keep your floors swept, your dishes

washed and put away, your garages free of paper or cardboard litter or old books. Roaches are drawn to wetness, and so making sure your under-sink areas stay dry is essential. Your attention to this area will not only help eliminate a prime roach living environment, it will also allow you to prevent these areas from deteriorating

from wet rot. Check for water or drain leaks regularly! Sugar ants and carpenter ants are both issues that can be avoided through good housekeeping and a watchful eye for exterior pests. Sugar ants may invade your kitchen looking for sweet substances to feed on. Keeping your sink, counters, cupboards, and food closets free of any food or food residue, and keeping all foods in plastic containers will keep sugar ants out of your house. Carpenter ants feed on wood, but unlike termites, they do not eat sound wood but rather only can eat wood that is undergoing wet rot. Keeping your exterior painted and caulked - keeping the water out - will prevent wet wood rot, and carpenter ant food. If you DO see carpenter ants on or in your home, I would advise having someone

investigate as to whether you may have structural damage that is just not visible yet. Termites can best be avoided by having your house exterior treated regularly, and your crawl space inspected for termite activity every year or two. Pest control services are also important, and necessary if you wish to keep your home as bugfree as possible. Yes, it is possible and desirable to minimize bugs in your home by eliminating their food and water supplies, and places to nest. And while it may be impossible to keep all bugs out of your house, it is of some comfort, through pest control, to see the bugs that do get in, on their back, doing a six-leg salute! Heat, Humidity, and Bugs are the three things we must all come to terms with if we are to be happy living in Southwest Florida. But unlike the weather, we can exert significant influence over the presence of insects in our homes.

Computer Problems I Come to You!

Whether you need help with a program or have a problem with your computer, I can help — or there’s no charge.

What makes every neighborhood complete is that perfect spot for a morning coffee and sweet, a lunchtime bite, or to satisfy that little mid-morning hunger Winnie-the-Pooh describes as “feeling eleven-o’clockish.” And what makes our neighborhood complete is The Bagel Factory. Turn right outside our main gate, and then right again on Del Prado, and The BF is just down on your left. Locally owned and operated for over 20 years, The BF offers a “baked-fresh-daily” selection of 27 different flavors of bagels! And at only 220-280 calories each, they’re a healthy option for nearly every diet. There’s also an array of spreads and a selection of hot breakfast melts—not to mention coffee, tea, juices, and baked sweets. And the small deli counter with hot and cold sandwiches and salads rounds-out the day.

Stop in for a quick takeaway before your next beach trip, or on your way home to grab a little sweet surprise for your neighbor. Or just stop in and stay awhile. The dining room is large and they have WiFi (not to mention a pile or two of newspapers). Easy, plentiful parking in front and at the side.

We already enjoy some of their bagels at the Del Tura Coffees on Tuesdays. Am sure you’ll appreciate their other offerings as well. Open seven days a week. Monday to Friday starting at 6am, and Saturday and Sunday at 7am.

Thanksgiving And Christmas Baskets THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS BASKETS By Charlene and Ron Ruotolo/Betty and Dave Scheetz This year the Basket Charity Program has been the best so far. Our community continues to show how much it cares by not only the donations to the program but by the overwhelming volunteer effort that makes programs like this possible. You showed it again this year, Del Tura Residents Care. YOU ALL DESERVE A ROUND OF APPLAUSE. Special thanks should be given to Ruth Anten for taking charge of

the flier distribution and collection activities. Special thanks also to the “GROUPS” that contributed to the Basket Program. We provided food and gifts to 70 less fortunate families for the 4th year in a row, and as you can see from the financials (shown below) the Basket Program is positioned to help 70 families next year also. We will also be donating money to a needy charity in the early portion of 2017. For those of you that do not know what the Basket Program is all about, we provide complete Thanksgiving and Christmas Din-

ners as well as boxes of staple food and at Christmas gifts for each family member. As we have in past years, Christmas gift buying has already began for Christmas 2017. By buying throughout the year we are able to take advantage of sales, to ensure there are adequate resources to get all the food and gifts needed. Again our heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to the holiday collection and to all the volunteers that collected, wrapped and packed the baskets. We would like to mention all of you by name but the list is just TOO long.

By John Brassem Meet Wendy Wells, who, from an early age, journeyed across America, but, lucky for us, ended up in Del Tura. It’s hard to keep track of her travels, but here goes. But first a geography lesson. She was born and raised in Lead, South Dakota. In case you wondered – and I’m sure you did – the well-known Wall Drug Store, (check it out on Google), is in SD as are The Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore. She went to college in Washington State, majoring in accounting and became – and still is - a crackerjack bookkeeper. She ended up in Peoria, Illinois, where she worked for an agricultural chemical company for over fifteen years. She then moved to Chetek, WI for two years. She returned to the Peoria area and worked in a quilting store. (More on Wendy’s quilting proficiency later). After the death of her hus-

band of thirty plus years, Wendy married Al Wells, whose wife of forty-six years had also passed away. Al is a Michigan Tech engineering graduate, who was hired by Caterpillar Inc. right out of college and lived nearby. In 2013, through the urging of friends, they both decided it was time to retire and move south,

Wendy Wells – lucky for us she ended up in Del Tura!

Florida to be exact. They initially flew to Tampa, found it too busy and expensive, then proceeded to North Ft. Myers via Punta Gorda. Perfect! The rest is history. Wendy is an extremely active member of the Del Tura community. As I mentioned above, she brings her extensive quilting experience to the many quilting enthusiasts in Del Tura. She is Co-Chair, with Kay Nezamis of the Del Tura Craft Fair for charity. Co-Chair of the January 25, 2017 Del Tura Fashion Show; Co-Coordinator of the weekly Quilting Group after Tuesday Coffee. Wait, there’s more. Wendy is in the running for one of the three-year HOA vacant Board seats. Wow. She is a busy personality here. If you haven’t met her yet, I hope you will soon. She is a nice person and has a wicked sense of humor!

SPORTS 18-Hole Women’s Golf Association By Carol Marra

3/17

2017 began with the Bloody Mary Open and 162 party goers on three courses. Highlight of the Open was Jessie LaVere’s hole-inone on 8 West. He was toasted in the Pub to start the New Year. Just a few days later, on January 4 and 5 the Men’s League held the Jack and Jill tournament in which many from our Association played. After a first day of Best Ball and a second day of a 2-person scramble Peggy and Bob Deems won. Steve and I also played to a heroic 6th place finish in Flight 2! The most fun was the heavy rain we experienced on 1 West. While it did not rain long, it was long enough for us to get very wet and have our worst hole (2 in the water and 4 putts!) of the two days. Ironically, our playing partners that day, Sandy Rolando and John DeFillippo, had one of their best holes. Adversity affects everyone differently!

January 27 was a Demo day sponsored by the Pro Shop. The Demo included Cobras, Tour Exotics and Tour Edge. The Pro Shop also holds the regular Wednesday Clinics as well as individual lessons. January 16 continued the popular Hometown golf day with free golf, souvenirs and a barbecue in the Courtyard. We began our first tournament of 2017, The President’s Cup on January 24 and 25. The President’s Cup is held over four days, ending February 2. Anyone new to Del Tura: We are always looking for new members. Our membership chairperson is Micki Sullivan. You can contact Micki at 567-2975 if you are interested in joining. She has all the information and can answer your questions. LEGA and Invitationals are posted in the Dungeon. These are

golf events held outside of Del Tura. We organize car pools to the various courses. Lunch is always included. Prizes for LEGA are based on individual scores while Invitationals are team events. It is an enjoyable way to try another course and meet new people. While our friends up north are experiencing some very cold and snowy conditions we have had some weather of our own. One Friday the fog was so thick you could not see the driving range lake let alone the fountains. The next morning we awakened to thunder, lightning and the rain we so badly need. It can not rain enough but frankly, we only want it to rain at night! If you have any influence with the powers to be, let us know. Also, Goldilocks conditions would be nice for the many upcoming tournaments all the Associations sponsor during season. Good luck to everyone!

Men’s Golf Association By Jay Flanagan

10/17

The Men’s Golf Association’s schedule for the month of February include the Member-Member championship to take place on the 8th and 9th and the always popular Divorce Open that will take place on February 18. Chairperson Ron Fluet has set the weekly games on Wednesday’s as follows: Feb 1, a point quota game with 36 being the base; on the 15th will be a Skins Game; and on the 22nd will have a Low Net, Low Putts challenge. All of theses tournaments have sign-up sheets in the dungeon for members to enter. The first two tournaments of the year were completed early in January with the Bloody Mary Open having 18 six person teams playing in two flights of nine teams each. In Flight number one the team of Jack O’Hearn, Dick Welch, Steve Doyle, Dave Liddle, Janno Batchelder, and Jack Medieros topped the field with an 11 un-

der par 50 to get by Mike Wedge, Rich Cordeiro, Stu Rosenthal, Ed Ledwidge, Susan Ledwedge, and Doreen Wedge and the team of Joe Mikesh, Penny Mikesh, Jim Torsok, Yvonne Torsok, Dave Blevins, and Ruth Ann Blevins who managed to score 52s. In the Second Flight the winning team included Sherry Leverre, Jesse Leverre, Wilma Antaya, Rick Antaya, Liz Flanagan, and Jay Flanagan who came in with a 53 including Jesse’s Hole in One. Two teams were able ro tie for second at 55 and they included Jim Hinchberger, Marcia Hinchberger, John Cook, Skipper Cook, Wayne Volz, and Sandy Rolando along with the team of Brenda Sharp, Jim Erion, Gary Perkins, Molly Brown, Jean Wiley, and Bob Mazzara. The Jack and Jill tournament involved two days in which couples played a day of best ball utilizing 80% of their total handicap and the second day scramble with 10% of their handicap. Thirty-

two teams hit the starting line and they were divided into two flights of 16 teams. In Flight One, Bob and Peggy Deems were able to top the 1st day with a 52 and came back on day 2 with a 59 to win the championship at 111. Brenda Sharp and Wayne Volz stayed very consistant with a 56 and a send day 57 to finish 2nd at 113. Three teams tied for 3rd including Jen and Tim Trout (55 and 59) , Kay Rolader and Mike Uhlich (56 and 58) and Wima Antaya and Rick Antaya (56 and 58) all with 114. Capturing the honors in Flight number two was Ann Bancore and Don Mick who topped the field on both days with a 52 and 61 for a 113 and a 5 shot margin over Sharon and Dave Daniels (54 and 64) at 118. Priscilla and John Peterson (58 and 62) 120 grabbed third place and there was a two way tie for 4th between Liz and Jay Flanagan (59 and 63) and Pam Price and Russ Thomas (60 and 62) at 122.

Friday Shuffleboard League The months are rolling along - we finished week number seven yesterday. The weather has been co-operating with no rainouts yet and we still haven’t had to play with heavy coats, jackets, long-pants and gloves on. Hopefully this will continue, as it’s a lot more fun playing in warm temperatures rather than in cold ones. That’s why we are down here in Florida playing and not up in Wisconsin or Michigan or the cold North East. By now, those that were gone somewhere up north over the holidays should all be back here where it’s warm and probably they are glad to be back. Hope you all had a good holiday wherever you spent it. After seven weeks of playing the “A-Flight” leaders are: Fred and Carolyn Brueggemann in first place at 20/1. Following in second place is Glenn and Mary Kay Tointon at 19/2 and the two teams tied for third place are Ben Hargraves/Joe Vigilante and Jack and Janet Blevons with 15/6 records. The “B-Flight” leaders have two teams tied for first place they are Lynne Sabel/Barb Jones and Garnet Fleming/

Chris Brylski at 11/10 and they are followed by two teams tied at 9/12, they are Roger and Darcie Rockenbaugh and Chuck and Marcella Carothers. There are still a lot of games left to play as our league plays almost through the month of March. Just a reminder to everyone playing on the courts, especially with younger visitors, to please use the equipment provided by Hometown as if it were your own so as not to break or damage it while you are using it. We have five pushers here at home now that we need to repair and return back to the equipment shack so it can be used again. Also please use the chalk for which it’s there for, marking scores on the chalkboards and not for writing on the

sidewalks. Hometown is nice enough to supply us with chalk and parts to repair broken pushers so lets all take care in using everything while enjoying playing on the courts. Thank you for your co-operation. Our courts are in great shape, with new benches and new chalk-board lights added the past two to three years and Hometown’s Norman, keeping the shack, the snack-table and the courts all clean and ready for play every week which we all appreciate. I would like to add one more thing. It would really be nice if the residents and visitors and also the sales people who live in our community, would please respect the 16-mph speed limits that are posted throughout our community. Living here on Avenida Del Tura, some people drive by here like they think they are on US-41 out front. Please slow down and respect our speed limit in here for not only your safety but also ours. We certainly don’t need anyone seriously hurt or killed on our streets because some of you don’t think these limits apply to you!

The DTNHWGA has a busy schedule this Season. In December all enjoyed the DTNHWGA Christmas celebration. The new Social Chairs, Mary Ann Light and Dorinda Doyle put on a wonderful luncheon, with the assistance of their committee. In lieu of a gift exchange, the members donated a $400 contribution to the Salvation Army. In January we again began having two Tee times – 7:30 and 9:00. The additional Tee Time helps to manage the large number of ladies playing on Thursday mornings. The DTNHWGA currently has 97 members! The Club Championship was played on January 18/19. Good Timers’ Singles Club News By Joyce Lienert

4/17

Now that the year 2017 is here, it is good to remember that it is not 2016. I find singing the song “When I was 17, it was a very good year”, helps to avoid mistakes when writing checks or signing legal documents. Other important aspects, of a new year, are reflection and future direction related to happiness. “The real secret of happiness is not what you give or what you receive; it’s what you share.” Anonymous If you are single, come share a “good time” with our group at our next meeting on Tuesday, February 7, at 5:00 p.m. in the Royal Palm Ballroom at the Clubhouse. We are having a sweet table at our monthly meeting because all the Christmas/ New Year goodies are gone and we are looking for new singles, who like dessert, to join our club. It also represents a celebration of the time and effort shared by an outstanding former member of our club. So we call this “Lorraine’s Day”. Then, after the meeting, maybe we could

all go to the Pub for a beverage. My favorite is tea. “Tea! thou soft, thou sober, sage and venerable liquid… thou smile-smoothing, heart-opening, wink-tippling cordial…” Colley Cibber (I really only like it iced and made on Long Island!) For further information or transportation for this monthly meeting, call Joyce Lienert at 973-632-1147. A meeting of the Good Timers’ Singles Club was last held on Tuesday, January 3. It was agreed that our President, Lorna Callan and Vice President, Nancy Skorlinski would serve another yearly term. Hurrah! A new Treasurer is now in place. Her name is Ann Clanton. Thank you Ann for your dedication and service to our club. I will remain as Secretary until a new one is available. Joan Whaley will continue to have charge of the Sunshine Club and Ann Boncore will run the monthly 50/50. Joan reported that Linda Leeper recently had an operation and getwell wishes were extended. Peg McTernan provided information presented at the Tuesday

morning coffee held on January 3. Thank you Peg! We celebrated December birthdays for Nancy Skorlinski, December 1; Linda Leeper, December 3; Alice Harris, December 4; and Brenda Blasie, December 13 at our annual Christmas Holiday Dinner hosted by the club’s officers on Monday, December 12. Eva Fasolo and Jackie Bryan also assisted with the decorating and organization of this event. All club members, who paid dues for 2016, had no charge for their dinner. This was a festive event. Lots of fun and laughter was had at the Yankee Swap, which was the highlight of the evening, along with Nick’s delicious food. We all got a holiday dishtowel to help dry the dishes. “Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine.” Lord Byron “We are all here for a spell; get all the good laughs you can.” Will Rogers Happy January Birthday to Marge Applebaum, January 8; Millie Hanrahan, January 27; and Lee Arthur, January 31. We celebrated

their birthdays at a luncheon at Heron’s Glen on Wednesday, January 18. A thank you is extended, from the group, to Lorna for organizing this neat event. We had anticipated a good time and Lorna came through. Happy February Birthday to Shirley Acker, February 11. Esther Kuntz volunteered to arrange for a luncheon or dinner for February. Thank you Esther. All residents of Del Tura are reminded that the Home Owner’s Association (HOA) has a board meeting each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Starlight Ballroom. All residents of the community are welcome/ encouraged to attend this meeting. The February meeting will be held on February 22, 2017, and will involve the election of new board members. Voting is very important to ensure continued representation of our community interests and concerns so when you recieve your ballot in the mail be sure to vote. Yearly HOA dues of $12.00 provide many benefits, including delivery of The Tower, discounts on

tickets for events and ability to vote in HOA elections. It is very important to support this association and you must agree you get a lot for your “buck”. That $12.00 is due for 2017. It can be paid at the Tuesday morning coffee or by contacting Doris Meyer at 731-1937. Also, the FMO membership is $25.00 a year. Bette EwingCheney is our FMO representative. She works hard to keep us informed of state rules/regulations and “what’s going on in the political arena.” She is at Tuesday morning coffee and can be contacted at 652-3909. Members should not forget to renew involvement in this very important organization that is working in our residential interest. “There are only seven or eight categories of phenomenon in the whole world worth talking about, and one of them is the weather.” Annie Dillard Hopefully the very cool evenings and nights are on the wane. Keep warm and remember that “hot” tea also helps this time of year. Brandy does too!

I will be taking orders for the new cards again this year. Please contact me at 239-218-9801. The cut off date will be January 23, 2017. The price is the same this year. Small cards are $8.00 and the large prints are $9.00. It would be a big help to me if groups of players would collect their money and then notify me. I will come and collect it all at once. Remember that the bonus money we get for ordering on line will go to FISH. Thank you for your support. Ellie Haug

Aging You know you are getting old when everything on your body either dries up or leaks. One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. Being young is beautiful but being old is comfortable. Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth...

Amen!

OLD TIME PHRASES

This came about from the ironclad ships of the Civil War. It meantsomething so strong it could not be broken.

RIFF RAFF The Mississippi River was the main way of traveling from north tosouth. Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they wereexpensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of wayover rafts which were considered cheap. The steer-

ing oar on the raftswas called a “riff” and this transposed into riff-raff, meaning lowclass.

COBWEB

The Old English word for “spider” was “cob”.

SHIP STATE ROOMS

Traveling by steamboat was considered the height of comfort. Passengercabins on the boats were not numbered. Instead they were named afterstates. To this day cabins on ships are called staterooms.
