Remember All Is Well
Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it always was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well. These words were penned by Henry Scott Holland a Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford. He lived from January 27,1847 until March 17, 1918.

From the President’s Desk Busy month coming up. November is Movember – mustaches and all. Everyone please help us support this important cause. Craft Fair on November 4 and 5. A lot of people do a lot of work to put this on, and a lot more people do a lot more work to come up with the wonderful craft items that will be available. It’s great to see so many people involved! Writing this in October, I’m seeing Halloween decorations going up here and there – look-
ing good! I’m also seeing Christmas stuff clogging the shelves in stores already. Seems like that come earlier every year. The ballrooms in the clubhouse will be getting new carpet and some other “freshening” during October, so they should look much better by the time you read this. New flooring also in the downstairs carpeted areas. The Pickle Ball courts should be in by year’s end. The dog park will
come in after the new year. Both will be nice improvements. Finally, a big “welcome back” to our seasonal friends. More have arrived and more to come. However, with the added traffic comes the increased need to be vigilant, watching for pedestrians, bikers, and carts. Please observe and obey our speed limits and stop signs. There! I said it again! Al Wells, HOA President

FISH Fruit Tree Picking Project This is the latest update (October 1, 2016) of the Fruit Picking Committee’s activity: The committee would like to keep the residents apprised of our progress and to give the proper, well-deserved special thanks to our resident fruit donors. Without these donors the needy of Lee County would not receive the fruit they need to supplement whatever diet they have available to them. To date, (our picking season runs from October 1 to September 30 each year) the team has picked 3,420.5 pounds of fruit, namely, mangos; grapefruit; tangerines; lemons and oranges. We picked 307 pounds with two volunteers this month. Thanks to Sherry and Barry, you worked real hard during the hottest summer ever! The fruit was delivered and distrib-
uted to the soup kitchen and was greatly appreciated. For the year we used 11 volunteers and we appreciate all their help. I wish we could predict the availability of the fruit better so that we could use the 20+ volunteers we have on our committee. I engaged a “Tree Whisperer” to help us last year but that didn’t work – she got apprehended and sent to New England for the autumn season (“leaf peppers”). She was immediately put to work at King Richard’s Faire – she did well there! This season the residents who opened their properties for our opportunity to pick their fruit are: Helene Stell; Rita and Bill Immoor; Karen and Dave Toothman; Mary Pimental; Bertie Dugo; Charles and Marlene Troeller; Florence Hammond; Sandy Mulvaney; Lucy and Paul Schaefer; William Smith; Diane and Joe Bevilacqua; Jerry Still;
Frank Spinale; Hank and Margaret Zanger; Glenn and Joy Martin; Jessica and Jose Enrique; Marilyn Hanson; Tom and Jan Condos; Mike and Jill Scott; Lucy Schaefer; Dan and Laura Weaver; Fran and John Baumberger; Donna Brown; Rick and Sandy Morgan; Nancy and Robert Moyer; Isabel Passinger, Carolyn and Bernie Forsey; Suzi Raiger; Carolyn and Fred Brueggemann; Dick Roche; Grant and Mable Karpe; Audrey Hopcia and Dorothy and Woody Cook. We are really proud of our residents for their generosity and concern. Since this report we have had more request to pick resident’s fruit. Keep those requests coming! We will report on those, as they are collected. Call Rick at 543-3662 or Sherry at 567-0538. We hope you have a great Fall season and we welcome back our seasonal residents. God bless and thank you very much!
Fish Transportation By Sue Symes We at FISH would like to thank Sue Maginn for being one of our Transportation “Bookies”. A “Bookie” is one of our volunteers who secure a “Driver” for any Del Tura resident who needs a ride to a doctor or dentist appointment or needs to go the grocery store.
We are now welcoming our newest “Bookie”, Linda Berlovich. It is such a rewarding commitment we do for the Del Tura residents. Linda has been a driver for FISH and has enjoyed meeting new people. FISH is always looking for more people like Linda to volunteer to drive residents at the driver’s convenience. If you
are unable to drive when you are called by a Bookie, please don’t worry. Just say that you are unavailable and the Bookie will go on to call another volunteer. There is no pressure from our Bookies. Really folks, it is a win-win for you and the resident needing assistance. If you are interested, please contact Sue Symes at 731-1308.

Time For A
YeAr-end invesTmenT review
With the holiday season upon us, you may well be busier than usual. However, by spending a few minutes reviewing your investment scenario of this past year, you can see where you’ve been, where you might be going, and what you need to do to keep moving forward toward your long-term financial goals. So, as you look back at 2016, pay close attention to these elements of your investment picture: PERFORMANCE – Reviewing your investment performance over time is important in helping you determine if you’re on track to achieve your financial goals. So, in evaluating how your investments did in 2016, ask yourself some key questions: How did your investments do relative to their performance in past years? If there was a big difference, what might have accounted for it? Were your returns relevant to your long-term goals? In other words, if you have already established a return rate you’ll need to reach your goals – and you should indeed set such a rate – were your actual returns “on track” to help you make progress toward your objectives? And, just as importantly, were your return expectations realistic, based on your investment mix and the market environment? INVESTMENT MIX – If you are a diligent investor following a well-designed strategy, you probably started out in 2016 with an investment mix that reflects your risk tolerance, time horizon, and short- and long-term goals. But over time, your investment mix can change, even without your having done so on purpose. If you owned a certain percentage of an asset, such as growth stocks, and those stocks appreciated in price substantially, they could take up a larger percentage of your portfolio than you had intended, thereby exposing you to a higher risk level than that with which you are comfortable. So now that the year is coming to a close, examine your investment mix to see if it needs “rebalancing.” CONTRIBUTION LEVELS – Are you taking full advantage of your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan? Specifically, if you got a raise this past year, did you boost your contributions to your plan? The more you invest now, and throughout your working life, the less likely it will be that you have to play “catch up” in the years immediately preceding your retirement. MISTAKES – We all make mistakes in every walk of life – including the way we invest. In looking back over 2016, can you spot some investment mistakes you might have made? Did you temporarily “bail out” on investing immediately after the “Brexit” vote, only to find, a few weeks later, that the markets had soared to record highs? Did you act on impulse and buy a so-called “hot” stock that turned out to be inappropriate for your needs and risk level? While mistakes like these might be costly in the short term, they can ultimately prove invaluable – if you learn from them. We’re just about ready to turn the page on the 2016 calendar. So, as you review your investment decisions for the past year, try to determine what worked, what didn’t – and what you can do to improve your results in 2017.

Reflections
“Keeping the Stars in Your Eyes and Your Head Above Water” day. Some would say that I think too much like a Pollyanna. Not totally, that main character in that book was once quoted as being more of a “blind optimist”, positive to the point of insensitivity at times. I truly believe that I am a blend of optimism and realism. I read somewhere that the combination of the two can be the best of both worlds. I believe that is true! Wouldn’t it be great to every once and awhile put on a pair of those rose-colored glasses and look out to see the beauty that surrounds us? Let’s try to see things in a more positive light each day. You’ll be a lot happier and healthier! “Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them. Marcus Aurelius

When the world seems sad and shadows cloud your happiness it’s quite difficult to keep that sparkle in your eyes. So, how does one do it? Is it even possible? Life is a constant battle, being happy and staying cheerful is a full time job for most people. I guess you could call me an optimist, more often than not, looking at the world through my rose-colored glasses. Ahhh…but I truly feel that I’m not alone in my thinking. Many of us have a tendency to perceive things through optimistic eyes. Seeing the good over the bad, being cheerful, trying to see things in a positive light is difficult in the smallest sense of the word. In today’s world it is truly a monumental task! In this crazy world it seems that “keeping stars in our eyes” is
the last thing we should be thinking about. To me, it’s the very thing we should be thinking about each day. It’s the very thing that will help us tread water so we can continue to “keep our heads above water” on those most trying days. I know there are people who are saying , Girl this is a naïve view and possibly so, but even though it may sound unrealistic, it is my belief that people are so much happier seeing the glass half full rather than half empty. Focusing on the positive rather than the negative is never easy and there’s no guarantee that each day will be perfect, but if you try you’ll feel a whole lot better. This way of thinking may not take away all the pain or hurt that life has a way of throwing at us, or make all the sadness in our world disappear but it can change our way of looking at things each

Meet Your Volunteer Lorna Callan By John Brassem Recently I was asked to interview Lorna Callan for The Tower on her background and how she ended up at Del Tura. I’m sure many of you have met Lorna – and have even volunteered with her – but I’m not sure you know much about her extremely interesting background. Lorna was born in St. John’s Newfoundland, Canada, (the year she was born is a state secret). At six, she moved – with her family – to one of the most interesting cities in the country, namely, The Bronx, NY. There’s only one Bronx, although it’s officially one of New York City’s five boroughs. People from the Bronx rarely travel to the other boroughs – thinking it’s beneath their dignity – and in many ways it is. Here are a few facts and figures about De Bronx, (as many
‘locals’ call it), that back up their opinion. Lorna knows these names and places well – they have become part of her personality. This writer is familiar with some of them too. The Bronx is the only municipality in the country, (not Washington, Los Angeles, New York, nor Chicago), that is honored with a THE introduction. Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees, is in The Bronx. As a youngster, Lorna watched Mickey Mantle play in center field. She was at that time a vocal member of the famous Bleacher Creatures. She has had several great Italian meals served in restaurants with picnic tables but without menus. On weekends, customers line up around the block waiting for a table – or in this case a seat. These popular, and unusual, businesses are on Arthur Avenue in The Bronx and owned, and run

by, guys who some seem to think are unsavory, but colorful, characters. Lorna, of course, has been to the world famous The Bronx Zoo. “When I was in school”, she reported, “I could see the zoo’s elephants from my classroom window.” She has fished off the piers on City Island, (“I even caught a couple of Blues from there”, she reports.), and, of course, frequented her local bodega, (small stores selling a variety of items including packaged foods, The Daily News, beverages and such. There are thousands of bodegas in The Bronx but not one Target.) The Bronx, of course, has hundreds of swimming pools, but outsiders still call them open fire hydrants. Lorna was raised, along with her 3, (count ‘em, three), brothers, on 161st St., which runs parallel to The Bronx’s well-known Melrose Ave. She, and, of course her three brothers, were within, walking distance of Yankee Stadium. Naturally, they all became dedicated Yankee fans. She graduated from Grace Dodge Vocational High School. (Lorna told me she had to take two busses to get to school.) Oh, how times have changed. Not long after graduating, she met Joe Callan, an up and coming New York City fireman, the proclaimed FDNY. Following a normal Bronx courtship, they were married.
Ultimately, Lorna and Joe had three sons. Lorna now had a family of seven, all men, including Joe, her three sons and her three brothers. It gets better; her three sons had six children, (Lorna’s grandchildren), four of whom were boys. “Finally”, Lorna told me, “my daughter-in-laws, had daughters; two to be exact. What a relief that was.” Thanksgiving dinners at the Callan household must have been loud and boisterous: 3 sons, 3 brothers, 4 male grandchildren, 1 husband and 2 granddaughters. Total: 11 males, 3 females, including Lorna. The family even had a male dog called, “Captain”. Joe moved up the hierarchy of the FDNY, ultimately becoming the number two fireman, (Assistant Deputy Chief Commander), for the entire New York City Metropolitan Area. Moreover, her three sons, taking after their father, joined the FDNY. Ultimately, two became high ranking Battalion Chiefs. We can well imagine how the 911 NYC Trade Center tragedies could have befallen the FDNY family were it not for propitious circumstances. (We all know that over 750 New York fireman died that terrible day.) Lorna says, ”When the planes hit the two towers, The FDNY called an emergency ‘all hands on deck’ to their stations. One son was on vacation, another was in training and the last was assigned to a station too far to reach
the Towers in time. All, however, worked at the now desolate and deeply depressing, (and unhealthy), site for 12-hours on and 12-hours off for over 3 months. They actively participated in the recovery of remains and clearing of ruble in the now dangerous and unhealthy site. Only Joe, the high ranking FDNY Assistant Deputy Chief Commander at that time, was on site when both towers were struck and went down. Thankfully, he escaped injury – barely -- and was tasked to help supervise the recovery and cleanup. “Joe was lucky”, explains Lorna, “he got out of there in one piece.” After some personal changes in her life, Lorna moved to Del Tura. “My girlfriend invited me to visit her at Del Tura”, says Lorna, “and I immediately fell in love with the place. I moved in right after that.” She adapted quickly. After a brief health issue, (“I’m still here”, she says proudly), Lorna, and her dog Muffin, (a female, by the way), have become active and important members of the Del Tura community. Look for her to help people in need, wrap Christmas gifts or call bingo. She is an active member of the Welcome Committee, President of The Goodtimers, a dynamic FISH member and a host of other activities. By all accounts, she has become a valuable Del Tura resident.

Holiday Golf Cart Parade Holiday Golf Cart Parade Date Change
It’s time to get your ideas ready for how you are going to decorate your golf carts for one of Del Tura’s most fun Holiday traditions. It is amazing to see how creative our residents can be. Last year there were 44 carts in the parade and so many people cheering us on from all around the community. Many of you already have what you need to hook up lights to your cart batteries, but if you need help, the following three men can show you what you need and how to hook lights up, The three “Power” volunteers are: Al Wells, 309-
CELEBRATING
360-1145; Jim Stenzel, 826-0524; and Gerry Benjamins, 322-9866. However it is up to you to get the things you need and to do the decoration…that’s half the fun! Please don’t wait until the last minute for their help. Also, we will have prize money, which will be announced in the January The Tower. So start planning early! The parade participants, as well as any residents who would like to join us, will meet in the clubhouse at 5:00 p.m. with an appetizer or dessert to share and bring your own liquids to drink, as that will not be provided. We will have plates, napkins and utensils
and we’ll have some pre-parade camaraderie. Then we will begin the parade at 6:00 p.m. We also welcome bicycles and motorcycles, whatever glows…goes! A map and approximate times the parade will reach your location is included on page 18 in this issue of The Tower. Our thanks to Bob and Doris Meyer and Lorna Callan who joined the Committee to get this parade going, now all you need to do is join in and have fun. For more information or ideas, call Erv or Linda Storma at 239997-9066. Thanks again for your support. Hope to see you there!

Book Review From Love Field: Our Final Hours With President John F. Kennedy By Nellie Connally Submitted by Marjorie Fischer This is a graphic and intimate telling of the assassination of president John F. Kennedy by Nellie as she rode in the motorcade limousine to hear the gunshot and turned around to see Jackie Kennedy spewed with the brains and blood of her dead husband. This account of the tragedy is contrasted to the sensationalism that was provided by the news media. The president was met by the Connally’s at the Dallas airport called Love Field, when he came to be part of a fundraiser. The handsome young president and
his stunning wife were the striking representatives of America. Governor John Connally together with his wife Nellie, were to host the visiting dignitaries at the governor’s mansion in Austin. Vast preparations had been made. The governor and his wife sat immediately in front of the Kennedys. With the bubble top of the car removed, the motorcade proceeded. The cheering crowds told how well the president was received in this mixed political arena. The governor turned, recognizing the sound of the fatal shot, and a second bullet hit him in the back. The limousine then sped to Parkland Hospital where Ken-
nedy’s demise was confirmed and Connally was rushed to surgery. The pandemonium surrounding it all was untold. With Air Force I ready to take the body of the dead president back to Washington, a two minute swearing in ceremony was conducted on board to usher in the new president, Lyndon B. Johnson. The reasons behind the shooting were conjecture only, ranging from a conspiracy of rightwing oilmen to deranged Lee Harvey Oswald’s defection tie to the Soviet Union. The follow up Warren Commission was not definitive with its findings since the supposed assassin had been killed as well. Editors note: Although it has been fiftythree years since the assassination in November 1963, the controversy lingers and the Kennedy family mystique continues.

Eli Landon’s world as he has known it is thrown upside down and inside out following the murder of his soon-to-be ex-wife. Not only is he the husband who had a public verbal argument with her on the day she died over finding out she has had a lover for quite some time, but he is also the one who found her body. Her lover couldn’t have killed her as his wife has given him an air tight alibi. As time goes on he loses his job as a criminal defense lawyer as well as most of his “friends” from before the murder. He becomes depressed/frustrated and angry. His family is very concerned about him.

When my husband and I moved to Del Tura ten years ago, we were sad to leave behind a fabulous Italian restaurant. We were sure that we would never find another one to even be parallel with it. Well it did take ten years, and who would believe we would discover one only ten minutes away. Tucked away in a shopping center is a gem of a restaurant named Gusto Cucina Italiana. If you love authentic Italian food, you should plan on an evening there. Fine dining and great wines awaits you and your friends. Vincenzo and Raquel Cangialosi own the restaurant. Vince prepares all the meals. Raquel is everywhere. Chef Vincenzo is an expert in Italian-Sicilian sauté and after 20 years in the business, he has found just the right balance between his authentic cooking and restaurant size. There are eight tables of various sizes and the nicest
thing is you can enjoy a conversation with others. The best waiter in the world, Michael, will make sure your meal is served without disturbing you. Price range between $11.00 and $25.00. My husband loves spaghetti and he is always ordering Bolognese at restaurants all over the world. Well he has found just what he has been searching for, Vince’s Pappardelle Alla Bolognese. My favorite is Veal Michelangelo, prepared with Tender Veal, sautéed shrimp, sea scallops, spiced tomato cream sauce, and Jump Lump crabmeat in brandy sauce.
Also delicious is the Salmon Gusto, made with artichokes, sundried tomato, and lemon butter sauce with roasted potato. We have been inviting one couple after another to dinner at Gusto Cucina Italian Restaurant and everyone has loved it. Give them a visit: 229 Del Prado Blvd N, Suite 15, Cape Coral 33909. The phone number is 239-4585900. Be sure to go before our snowbirds return! Call and make a reservation with Raquel, you will not be disappointed!

Friday, November 11 is Veteran’s Day. Thanks to Denny Flynn and Tony Oliver, Del Tura has one of the finest Memorials dedicated to our Military Veterans and those men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, that any community could have. Many of our new residents or non-golfers may have never seen this memorial. It is located near the golf practice tees. How fortunate we are to have Veterans from
World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars living here in Del Tura. Many of our neighbors have given brave and extraordinary service to our country. I am proud of my military service, but I am truly humbled by those surrounding me. PLEASE make time to attend and honor our Vets on Friday, November 11 at 10:00 AM at the Memorial site. DON’T MISS THIS ONE!!

18-Hole Women’s Golf Association By Carol Marra A long and hot summer, whether you traveled north or stayed south this year. Rochester, New York had over 25 days of 90 degrees. The average, in other summers, has been 9! And now, a new season as many are settling in after being away. Del Tura has brought in many new homes. And, of course we have many new people to meet. Hopefully, lots of golfers among them. All three courses are now open again after much care. A few other changes have happened or will happen soon. The one that effects us (some of us like to practice!) is the new putting green (It is “HUGE!”) that replaced the two smaller ones. Anyone new to Del Tura: We are always looking for members. Our membership chair-
person is Micki Sullivan. Contact Micki at 567-2975 if you are interested in joining. She has all the information and will answer your questions. LEGA and Invitationals are posted in the Dungeon. We organize car pools to the various courses. Lunch is always included. Prizes for LEGA are based on individual scores while Invitationals are team events. It is an easy way to try another course and meet new people. The Women’s 18-Hole Association gets rolling quickly with our Club Championship starting November 10. It continues the 16th and the 17th of that month. December will be the Awards Banquet, Elections, the MemberMember tournament and Christmas Luncheon. And then in January we will really get busy! Did everyone enjoy the Ryder Cup?
Well, of course! It was great, competitive golf that, at times, resembled a football game in overtime. Did everyone see Jordan Speith step into the water to try to figure out if he could hit his ball that was caught among the plants? As he stepped in, it appeared that his motion or weight (or both) caused the ball to sink. One stroke penalty!! So, stay out of the water unless you are very sure you can hit without causing yourself a penalty. And, besides, this is Florida; we have creatures. Beware! Our ladies took the summer off as far as Hole-in-Ones are concerned. The best we could do was a lot of
chips-in in our newest competition. One week four of us shared it. Yes, I chipped in on 8-West for a birdie. Glenda Oliver also had a chip in. And not to be outdone, Penny Mikesh had two! It was a busy Thursday! Normal activities are in full swing. Friday scrambles can now be more regular as the afternoon showers end. On November 5 is the Unity tournament. With a partner we will play a modified Ryder Cup. (Alternate shots with your spouse or good friend can always bring out the best in both of you! ) Lessons, both private and group are available through the Pro Shop.
A final note: If you read the August-September Tower and were a bit confused by my article you are not alone. Inadvertently, the article I wrote for AugustSeptember 2014(!) was reprinted. I was away for quite a while and perhaps there was interest in a walk down memory lane! (Don’t think so!) No, I am not resubmitting old articles but, evidently the wrong button got pushed when printing that month’s articles. In all my time working with the staff at The Tower they have never made a mistake and, in fact, have called me after proof-reading the articles with a question about a possible error. I love writing these articles but do not expect even Steve to read them more than once! And, if you did not notice it was an old article, I hope you enjoyed it!

Friday Shuffleboard League By Jack Blevons Believe it or not, it’s November and we start playing shuffleboard again. If all is going normally here in Del Tura, you should be reading this a day or two before our first games will be played which is Friday the 4th. Janet and I returned here on October 1 after spending a good summer up in Wisconsin where we both have families. We still enjoy spending our summers up there. Always a big job of boarding up our big screened in porch and winterizing our mobile home before we head down here to warmer weather and good friends. It took us a few days to get unpacked and settled back in after the 1500 mile drive down which Janet does all the driving with just two over-nights on the way. But, I do stay awake while she does the driving because I
always believe that four eyes watching the road are better than two. She knows since I’ve been making this same trip every year since 1995, that I am now a good navigator which sometimes helps when watching for road signs when going through places like Indianapolis, Chattanooga and Atlanta. Anyhow, it’s good to be back and lets play some shuffleboard. As it looks right now if we find one more person as I write today (October 8) we will have 19 teams this season which will make our weekly schedule a little different because with an odd number of teams it will create 3 “bye” games every week, which won’t matter at all. What it means there will be 3-teams each week that will just play 2-games instead of 3. During the course of the season, every team will have one or more of those weeks. Anyhow, I want to welcome everyone back
and a special welcome to the following new teams this year. They are: Richard Weatherby and Elly Janson, Denise Palazzo and Jean Wiley, Garnet Fleming and Chris Brylski . The last four people I mention have played with us in the past either as regulars or as subs. So, we are still in need of three people to play as regulars every Friday and again as in the past, we are always in need of subs. As before, you can call either Janet or myself at our home here, 731-0892. We do have an answering machine so if we’re not home please leave a message and we’ll return your call. I am looking forward to another fun season of Friday League shuffleboard which is what our league is made of. Great camaraderie with good friends which makes for good times as well as fun times. See you on the courts.

Monday Afternoon Nine-Ball By Harry Christopher Beginning Monday, November 14, 2016 we will again begin our weekly tournaments, which begin at 1:00 PM and last no more than 2 hours. Everyone is welcome regardless of skill level. Handicaps are applied based on week-to-week performance, so all players have a chance
to win a tournament. This is not the usual 9-ball. Rather, one point is given for each ball made and 2 points for the 9-ball for a maximum 10 points per game. You normally play no more than 2 games per opponent and the match is over when you reach your handicap total. Depending on the number of players on a given Monday, we will either
play double-elimination or roundrobin tournaments. There is a sign-up sheet in the billiard room along with more details about rules, etc. You need not play every single Monday that is scheduled. If you have any questions, feel free to call Harry Christopher at 239-997-7345.
By Harry Christopher
This is a 12-team league consisting of teams from nearby communities like ours. Del Tura has 2 teams of 5 players and subs. We follow a strict BCA (Billiard Congress of America) league format. Handicaps are applied
based on the skill level of the players, thereby giving any team a chance of winning on any given night. We begin play for the fall season on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 6:45 p.m. until about 8:30 p.m. Plaques are awarded at the end of the Spring Season (March
28, 2017) for winning and runnerup teams. Both Del Tura teams need players. Call Bill Nezamis, Captain of Del Tura 2 at 239-349-4608 or Harry Christopher, Captain of Del Tura 1 at 239-997-7345 for information.

Good Timers’ Singles Club News By Joyce Lienert
1/17
“When I was growing up, a friend was someone to talk with at recess and do things with on the weekends. But as I’ve gotten older, friends have come to mean so much more. They are not pastimes – they are the main events.” Dianna Booher The Good Timers’ Singles Club can serve as a main event, in your life, if you meet the qualifications to join. You must be single and enjoy friends. Robert Browning’s saying, “less is more”, does not apply to friends. The more the merrier seems to be a better application. Joining a club usually opens the door in this realm. In simple terms, friends are people you like. There are a lot of likeable people who are members of our club. I know this because I
am a member and appreciate the friendliness of the group. I’m sure you would agree with me. Why not stop by and attend a meeting? Call me if you are interested and I’ll pick you up! Sometimes it is easier to have someone to walk in with. My number is 973-714-4117. You can attend a monthly meeting as a guest. The meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at 5:00 p.m. in the Jacaranda Ballroom at the Clubhouse. Membership dues are $25.00 a year. A meeting of the Good Timers’ Singles Club was held on Tuesday, October 4. There were 18 members in attendance and two guests, Ann Clanton and Ellen McKechnie. Ann is from Long Island, NY and has been living on Madera Drive since July 15. Ellen, also from
NY, has been living on Madera Circle for 2 ½ years and loves to play cards. The meeting discussed the dinner held at Ruby Tuesdays in September. All agreed it was a good choice and the coupons made it even more enjoyable. Joyce Lienert organized the event. In addition, a barbeque held on Tuesday, October 19 celebrated birthdays of Lorna Callan (October 20) and Barbara Boyd (October 24). Lorna organized this yearly event. A Christmas Party, to be held the 1st or 2nd week in December was also discussed. The club officers will organize the party: Lorna Callan, President; Nancy Skorlinski, Vice President; Joyce Lienert, Secretary. Peg McTernan provided information regarding what was discussed at the last HOA/Tuesday Coffee meeting. Highlights
included the Craft Fair, Alzheimer’s Walk, Flu Shots, History of Fort Myers luncheon presentation, Medicare information and Bingo. Thank you Peg! Members were reminded that the Home Owner’s Association has a board meeting the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., and that the HOA office now is back on regular hours, and HOA yearly dues of $12.00 are now due. All members were encouraged to read the “The Tower”. Joan Whaley has charge of the Sunshine Committee and discussed Nancy Skorlinski’s recent hospitalization/rehabilitation. Also, all were informed that Alice Harris is now hospitalized. Ann Boncore runs the monthly 50/50 raffle that is
held every meeting and also at monthly events. Happy November Birthday to Zella Hoyt, November 10; Ann Boncore, November 12; Lillian Klopp, November 14 and Peg McTernan, November 27. The Good Timers’ remind everyone to fly the flag on Election Day, November 8 (in celebration for our right to vote), Veterans Day, November 11 (in respect for our honorable veterans), and Thanksgiving Day, November 24 (in commemoration of our heritage). DON’T FORGET “DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME” ENDS November 6 – set your clock back (fall back/spring ahead) and get an extra hour of sleep. “A friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.” Walter Winchell

Del Tura On Top of the World By Jacques Theriault Last May a Del Tura resident embarked on a 14 day trekking trip that took him from Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, to Mount Everest Base Camp. Our local climber is Jacques Theriault (aka Jack Rabbit of the Amigos softball team) living with his wife Carole at 274 Las Palmas. Jacques is one of our snowbirds from Canada, he spends half the year at his northern home in Coteau-du-lac near Montreal and the other half right here in Del Tura. Jacques, a marathon and half-marathon runner, decided that he needed a new challenge to celebrate his 60th birthday. What is better than going to see the top of the world, Mount Everest? It took him 6 months to get everything prepared and organised both at home and in Nepal. Information, visa, equipment, training and contacts in Nepal, they all take a fair amount of time to do things right. Jack left Montreal at 8:00 a.m. on May 14, to reach Kathmandu the next day at 8:30 p.m. He stayed in Kathmandu for 3 days to get ready for the trekking trip in the Himalayas, to get used to the time change (+ 10 hrs) and to do some sightseeing around the capital. On May 19, he took a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla where he was to meet his guide/ porter for the 14 days hike on the tallest mountains on earth. Although the flight to Lukla is relatively short, only 45 minutes, the airport of Lukla is considered to be, if not the most, one of the most dangerous airport in the world and the plane that takes you there is not reassuring either (Do go check Lukla airport on YouTube).

In Lukla, you have one last chance to get any missing item that you need for the trekking trip. After meeting up with the guide, and eating a good breakfast at a local lodge, it was time to get going on the downhill trail to Phakding, a descent from an altitude of 9300 feet to 8560 feet. Each day, we would be on the trail going up and down between 6 to 10 hours before resting at the next lodge for the night. The second trekking day was the longest, ascending from Phakding to Namche Bazaar to an altitude of 11,300 feet, a climb on narrow trails of almost 3000 feet. Namche Bazaar is the main hub of the region and as such there are a lot of people and beasts of burden going up and down. The Nepalese are rather short in height but strong as bulls carrying the heavy loads of materials needed by all those living and travelling the region. Men and beasts are the only means of transportation as there are no roads, nor any railways going up the mountains. Namche Bazaar is also the first stop to allow the travellers to get used to the thinner air of the high mountains, so a rest day is welcome to take in the beauty of the surrounding area. The next two days are spent on the trail going from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (12,660 feet) and to Dingboche (14,470 feet). The air gets yet a little thinner and the temperature drops below the freezing point at night. While in Tengboche, Jacques had the chance to spend some time in the Buddhist temple to witness the monks’ morning prayer. After a 1-day break in Dingboche, it is up the trail again toward Leboche (16,100 feet) starting the day with a light blanket of snow on the ground. At this altitude, there

are no more plants or trees to be seen, only barren landscapes of rocks and snow capped peaks. On May 26, 2016, Jacques finally reaches his objective as he has Mount Everest in sight on the way to the base camp. Mount Everest base camp, at the foot of the Khumbu glacier, sits at an altitude of 17,600 feet and is the first step toward the summit. It is late in the climbing season and only a few are still at base camp preparing for the return trip down the mountain. That night and the next were spent in Gorak Shep (16,860 feet). The best point of view to admire Mount Everest is not from the base camp, as you are then already on the mountain, but if you climb Kala Patthar from Gorak Shep to an altitude of 18,200 feet you will be rewarded with the most astonishing sight of the top of the world, truly amazing. It took 5 days to climb down back to Lukla to catch the returning flight to Kathmandu. Arriving in Kathmandu, the first order of business was to get to the hotel to take a nice and long hot shower, 14 days without running hot water or a proper bathroom is a long time. The next few days were spent roaming around town, searching the perfect souvenirs to bring back to the family, and getting a nice rest in a comfortable bed before the long flights back home. Having gone up and down the highest mountains of the Himalayas to reach the top of the world was a truly amazing experience that will be with him for the rest of his life. Thank you Nepal for showing a humble Del Turian what the world has the best to offer.
