President’s Column By Norman Olshansky: LMA President This year will be a special year for LMA with lots of opportunities and challenges, from starting our roads project to addressing ongoing security needs. Our community is ageing and will require additional work to maintain our lakes, drainage and infrastructure. Our social activities are doing well, but we must continue to get more people involved on our committees and in leadership. Volunteers are who make our community events so special. Do you have an idea for an activity? We are always looking for volunteers to initiate and lead programs that will be of interest to residents. We are all concerned about the Coronavirus and want to make sure we take proper preventative steps. Please follow the recommended procedures for washing hands, staying away from people with colds or flu symptoms and avoiding contact with other people if you have any indication of possible contagion. Detailed suggestions on what you can do are in this issue of The Eagle. We have been in touch with medical professionals and will cancel large group activities until the threat of the virus is over. Our Town Hall Security meeting resulted in many recommendations on how we can deal with issues such as security at the north and south gates, speed calming devices, and ways to protect your homes. The Security Committee will be reviewing all of the notes from the Town Hall and will report back to the board with recommendations for future action. Also, at the Town Hall meeting, a representative from the Sheriff’s Department gave excellent information to those attending. If you have an alarm system it must be registered with the County Sheriff’s Department. See instructions in this issue of The Eagle. We have new board members and I’m pleased to announce that Jeff Smith has agreed to work with Mike Knupp on the Lakes Committee and Jim Goldman will serve on The Eagle Editorial Committee in addition to being Secretary and handling some special projects I have given him. Have you noticed excess water on our roads as a result of misdirected irrigation sprinklers? Please make sure that your sprinkler heads are watering your yards and not the streets. Water is a precious commodity, especially in the winter and spring months. Please do your part to conserve our valuable water resources. I want to thank those who submitted letters to the editor to The Eagle.

Our paper is available for receiving such letters, even if critical of LMA or about controversial subjects. It’s your community and we want to be as open as possible for input from residents expressing concerns, suggestions and feedback so that we can serve you better. You may have noticed a letter to the editor in the March issue of The Eagle expressing concerns that inadequate time was devoted to a discussion related to a security issue. I do want to publicly apologize to those residents from Eagles Point Circle who attended our last board meeting and felt like they were not given adequate time to express their concerns about the hunting incident that occurred in January. We only had a 30-minute scheduled meeting in order to accommodate the elections. We also have established a general rule that we do not conduct committee business at our board meetings. The subject had been brought to the security committee which has continued to address the issue with the concerned residents. The committee did receive extensive information from residents, the Sheriff’s Department and the Fish and Wildlife Commission. If there is anything that the security committee thinks the overall board should address, in addition to what has already been done, they will bring a recommendation to the board. As you may be aware, the publishers of The Eagle, Island Publishing, has been sold. The former owners will continue to be responsible for the articles until the end of the year, after which time, the new owners will take over. Argus Management has announced a change in managers for The Landings. George Neil, who has been our property manager for about 15 years has been reassigned within the Argus Company. He has been a major asset to The Landings and we wish him well in his new position. Our new manager, Steve Brockenshire, begins on April 1. See his bio and photo in this issue of The Eagle. He comes to The Landings with extensive property management experience. Several group activities were cancelled during March as a result of the Coronavirus. Check out The Eagle, Landings website, and LRC emails for dates and times of rescheduled events. Also mark your calendars for the next bike outing on Sunday April 19th. We have a great board which looks forward to your input and feedback.

APRIL 2020

LMA Meeting Notes LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky announced the following during his president’s report: • Residents will notice several new and ongoing infrastructure projects this year. • Two new board members were introduced. • Precautionary steps to prevent the spread of the corona virus were reviewed. Detailed steps appear elsewhere in this issue. • Olshansky offered an apology to Eagles Point Circle residents for not allowing them enough time to express their concerns regarding the January hunting incident. • Residents were thanked for their letters to the editor. • Volunteers were thanked for their participation in numerous community groups and activities. • The next bike outing is scheduled for Sunday, April 19.

MANAGERS REPORT

Landings Manager George Neil reported the following: • Neil, Mike Knupp, Bill Whitman and David Jacaruso met with an FPL official to discuss several issues. • Met with the Executive Director of Inspired Living regarding overgrown grass etc. • Looked into security issues and concerns near the South Gate. • Continuing to send out billing letters to residents and vendors who were responsible for damage to gates. • Daily community drivethrough seeking issues which need to be referred to Committee Chairs.

FINANCE REPORT

Treasurer, Dick Bayles reported it was too early to make an end of year forecast of finances. He noted there are an unusually high number of outstanding annual assessments. The usual notification and certified letters are being sent before cases are referred to the LMA attorney for collection.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Chairman Michael Knupp reported representatives from the County Sheriff’s office would be attending the upcoming Town Hall meeting to share preventative measures residents can take regarding safety and security issues.

DRAINAGE

Co-Chairs Michael Knupp and Roger Kidder met with Bill and Rudy to discuss drainage options proposed by Santee Consulting regarding issues on Peregrine Point Drive. A lack of rain prevented the discovery of any other drainage issues.

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping chair Paul Weiner reported spending just over $15,000 to renovate twenty three islands in the community. Several irrigation repairs were also completed.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Committee chair Maralyn Kaufman-David, Ph.D reported the Free College session featuring Bob Mantiega and a Florida Audubon representative was a great success. More than 70 attended. A meeting was held with Michael Knupp to discuss Lake 3 project issues. Although five species of aquatic plants are thriving, algae issues persist. Traditional measures have been taken to temporarily minimize the problem. Lee Amos, a Land Steward and staff biologist at Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, has offered to discuss how to diminish the algae. The possibility of using the zebra mussels will be investigated. Discussions and information sharing continues with homeowners around Lake 1 to implement a “ring of responsibility” around their lake.

MAINTENANCE

Maintenance Committee chair Ron Pierce reported the progress of several projects. • New signs, yellow line striping and strategically placed traffic delineators have been installed

Letters to the Editor

By Trebor Britt

The committee is working to post appropriate signs on the LMA property nearest the recent hunting incident. The Traffic Hawk speed monitoring equipment has been re-installed at an undisclosed location. Resident vehicle decal reading issues have been repaired. Knupp made a motion to pay $200 to repair damage to a resident’s vehicle caused during an adjustment to a decal. With no objection or discussion, the motion passed unanimously.

at the north gate. Since the installation of the new signs, (45) construction and other delivery trucks still had to be safely backed out of the gate because of faulty GPS system instructions. • Four large construction trucks were escorted safely in and out of The Landings. • Seriously damaged signs and rotted posts continued to be replaced throughout The Landings. • School bus drivers continue to damage curbs on the Landings Boulevard main entry island even though Sarasota County School Transportation Supervisor, Teresa Clarke sent a directive to all their drivers. NEW LANDINGS MANAGER Landings manager, George Niel announced he would be leaving his position soon and Steve Brockenshire will become the new Landings Manager. Neil served the community as manager for nearly 15 years. Brockenshire, who was present at the meeting, is formerly an attorney and well acquainted with the workings of Association Boards. He will work along side Neil until assuming the full-time position in April.

This is a response to the letter in the March issue of The Landings Eagle and to other expressions of dissatisfaction with the condition of the roads in The Landings. There has been a lot of talk lately about how the appearance of the roads in The Landings is poor and detracts from our property values. The usual proposed solution is to throw money at the problem – spend enough to get them all done at once and be done with it (until the next time). Even if we collected the estimated $2,200 per owner it would require, the logistics make such a project impossible.

A little history of road resurfacing in The Landings:

In the mid 2000’s, we budgeted $60,000 per year for road work and selected an area each year that we could do for $60,000. There was a list of all the roads in The Landings and their last year of resurfacing as a guide. A review of this work revealed we were spending too much on repeated engineering work and less of the funds were going into the actual roads themselves. We modified our plan to accrue the $60,000 per year and repave a larger section of roads every five years. A consultant was retained to prepare a report on road conditions and recommendations for repaving planning. The roads were surveyed as to condition and divided into three groupings for planning. The amount being collected each year in the road-reserve assessment has increased each year since 2012 and for 2020 is at $140,000 per year. The Road Reserve balance at the end of 2019 was $540,000 and we should be able to do future road work as quickly as we can get contractors.

NEW BUSINESS

A resident reported David Jacaruso unnecessarily has to pick up trash every morning along the road near the north gate and wondered if Publix shoppers were the cause. The resident was advised that management at Publix was notified and plans to help resolve the issue.

GENERAL BUSINESS

Residents attending the meeting reported the following: • Observed the south gate gate-arm scraping the top of an Amazon Prime truck tailgating a resident to gain entrance. • A safety concern was raised about being able to see passing traffic on the county road as they exit the south gate. • Concern was raised about a response to the letter to the editor regarding roads issues. Olshansky commented a response would be published in The Eagle. • The County Fire Department was unable to open a gate as they exited The Landings. Olshansky assured residents appropriate committees would address all these concerns.

Our original plan called for the first set of roads to be done in 2015, primarily the Treehouses, but also Kestral Park Circle. Difficulty in obtaining engineering and bids delayed our ability to do the work until 2016. Then, as now, there is great demand for construction related resources – Sarasota County planning, engineering contactors and paving contractors. In 2017, we went out to ten engineering companies to see if they would respond to the engineering RFP we had put together for the Peregrine Point Drive (“PPD”) project. All ten said they were too busy to respond to our RFP. We worked for about two years to find a responsive engineering firm and, late in 2019, connected with a recent transfer from the Sarasota County engineering staff that had joined a private engineering firm who said his company – one of the original ten -- would respond. And they have. So, here we are in early 2020, three years after the project started, about to get the final engineering plans and bid package and can only hope that we can interest a contractor in doing the work. When the engineering work is done on the PPD project, we will immediately start work on the next phase – Kestral Park Way S and Kestral Park Drive. The recent letter to the editor placed the blame for lack of progress on lack of funds. Funding has never been the cause for delays in getting the work done. Given the delay in the PPD work, we will undertake the next project as quickly as we can get contractors to respond. But, at best it will take several more years before all the roads will have been resurfaced. Dick Bayles LMA Treasurer LMA Roads Committee

Landings Community Awareness -- Best Prevention Against Coronaviruses Is Proper Hand Washing Compiled by: Norm Olshansky, Paige Packman & Dee Ricapito Since there isn’t a vaccine yet for Covid-19, (Coronavirus) the best prevention at this time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is washing your hands thoroughly. It’s a timed 5-step process that can involve light singing. Here’s the CDC’s official hand washing how-to. 1. Wet your hands with clean, running water. Then, turn off the Tap and soap up your hands. Soap is more effective at removing germs than water alone. 2. Work the soap into a lather by rubbing your hands together. Lather soap onto the backs of your hands, in between your fingers and under your nails. Lathering causes friction, which strips pesky germs and dirt from the skin. Be sure to get into the nooks and crannies, too — germs lurk there.

3. Scrub your hands at least 20 seconds. Sing or hum “Happy Birthday “twice through to keep time. There’s no magic number, but washing your hands for at least 20 seconds has been shown to remove more microbes than washing for shorter periods does. Singing “Happy Birthday” is just a fun way to make sure you’re scrubbing long enough. 4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. You’ve lifted the germs from your hands. Clean water flushes them off. 5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air-dry them (or a bit of both). Wet hands easily transfer viruses. Drying them off lessens that risk. Communicable disease specialist reminds us, the most common areas missed by hand washers were thumbs, wrists, and in between fingers. Soap and

water are your best defenses against viruses, but hand sanitizer is an OK substitute if you don’t have access to either of those --and rub your hands together for about 20 seconds. Hand sanitizers won’t get rid of dirt, chemicals or a few types of germs, but they’re still better than nothing.

LOOKING OUT FOR EACH OTHER TIPS: Dr. James Robb, pathologist and molecular virologist advise: PREPARE NOW. 1. Hand sanitizers must be alcohol-based and greater than 60% alcohol to be effective. 2. If you think you may be getting a cold or flu stay away from others. If you have the flu, a mask may help from spreading it to others.

3. Don’t shake hands, (use a fist bump). Use your knuckle to touch light switches, elevator buttons, lift gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or disposable glove. 4. U se disinfectant wipes at stores when available. Keep a bottle of sanitizer at your home’s entrance and in your car after getting gas. 5. Cough into your elbow. 6. D on’t touch your face (we touch our nose/mouth 90x/ day without knowing it. 7. Stock up with zinc lozenges (have been proven effective in blocking various viruses).

Blooming This Month: Pentas

Pentas lanceolata

4/30/2020

Pentas bloom with large clusters of starry blooms that attract butterflies by the dozens as well as hummingbirds. The plant grows well in containers and in the ground -- and it can even make a good houseplant if you have enough light. It does best in full sun and moist, welldrained soil. Pentas are great plants for container gardens and also work well in mass plantings in garden beds. Be sure to leave ample space for them to grow if planting in beds. It’s okay to place pentas in closer quarters when creating

container gardens because most pentas grow about 15 inches wide and 2 to 3 feet tall. By pinching back the early growth it will encourage bushier plants. At first planting, water the plants regularly and then only as necessary. Fertilize every six weeks or so to improve growth. Chew on This By Nicole Kenedy Raw. Frozen. Canned. Freeze-dried. And good, old-fashioned kibble. When it comes to choosing the menu for your dog, there are a number of options available from a seemingly endless list of brands – and if you don’t like what they offer, you can even make your own. Off the shel f or home co oke d, e ac h option offers pros and cons that can be beneficial or potentially detrimental to your pup—and maybe your lifestyle. So, while your dog may not always be picky about what they eat, you should know as much as you can about what you’re dishing out for your pet. If you’ve opted for full control of your dog’s diet by cooking up nutritious scratch options at home, ter r i f ic. Before t he early-to-mid 20th century and the introduction of nutritional regulation for the commercial pet food industry, preparing the dog’s meals at home was standard practice. Seafood lovers, it’s good and fresh Yelp review: In just one word: EXCELLENT! My husband and I were going to Walt’s Seafood for lunch, but it was closed for vacation, that was the best thing that could had happened. I looked for another place in Yelp and found this gem! This restaurant is small, family owned with a great menu and excellent service. Our server Nancy was very friendly, the owner Bob came to our table to get our feedback. Food was fresh and unbelievable tasty! We ordered the Bradens Island soup, this crab soup comes with a mini crab cake in the center like an island full of flavor. We also tried the Lobster bisque, it was delicious. As the entries we had Fish and Shrimp Tacos topped with Pico de Gallo and the Crab cakes, they were 100% crab no fillings. We closed it up with a Key Lime Pie, yum!! It’s homemade fresh every day . Everything was fresh and delicious.

Living in Florida, you expect to find fresh seafood no matter where you dine. If you are a local seafood lover, you probably have a mental list of go-to restaurants which serve the freshest seafood. Fresh Catch Fish Market & Grill needs to be added to it. Fresh Catch’s father/son duo, Bob and Devon Provost have a serious passion for seafood which started way back when the family lived in the Boston area. Their simply prepared, neverfried, never-frozen dishes are paired with a variety of simple sauces that serve to complement, so the freshness of the seafood shines. Your fish/seafood selection goes from the case onto the grill. Prepared grilled or blackened, topped with lemon and butter, Pico de Gallo or tropical salsa. Served with a fresh ear of corn on the cob and baby roasted potatoes. Soups, salads, sandwiches and steam pots round out the menu. If room permits, be sure to order a slice of their homemade key lime pie. Bob’s wife, Debra, makes the key lime pie, using freshly whipped cream. The restaurant also offers a nice selection of beers and wines. Fresh Catch Fish Market & Grill, located at 7119 S. Tamiami Trail, just south of Stickney Point Road in the Buccaneer Plaza, is a casual restaurant/market with indoor and outdoor seating for close to 30. Here’s what more patrons are saying about the restaurant online:: This is the BEST place for the freshest seafood in Sarasota and I am not a fish eater. I had the Shrimp Skewer, my daughter had the crab cakes, my husband had the grouper sandwich, son-in-law had the Amberjack. All of the dinners were so fresh and tasty and I would go back many times again. Changed my mind about fish… DELICIOUS DELICIOUS! The freshest and most delicious food mixed with the nicest people! This place is a true gem! Make sure you make reservations, especially on lobster roll night, because this intimate restaurant can get packed! I can’t recommend this place enough!! The boil and crab cakes are my favorite backups when the lobster rolls are sold out!! This was our first visit and we enjoyed our meal tremendously! I found them in an online list of places serving stone crab, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have noticed their location in a small strip mall. We ordered the Stone Crab as an appetizer and they were fresh and sweet. We also had a red snapper wrap and grilled grouper sandwich. Everything was delicious, and our server Maria was very friendly and attentive. Their fish market looks appetizing too. We’ll be back!

Bringing you quality and comfort for more than 30 years!

Ah, Spring. A time for renewal and rebirth. At Abel’s Ice Cream, owner Jerry Williams loves this season because of the joy he gets from reuniting with his favorite snowbirds. “It’s like meeting up with old friends when someone walks in the door who’s been out of town for months,” he said. Not surprising that Jerry becomes friends with his customers. One of the most frequent review comments about Abel’s Ice Cream is the friendliness of the staff. And that all starts with him. And right now, he’s even happier than usual. It’s almost a guarantee that the next time you walk into Abel’s for your favorite sweet treat, Williams will be sporting his Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Championship hat. “Fifty years in the making.” He smiled. “Of course, I’m ready to talk about it.” Along with the wide variety of delicious ice cream flavors that are available year-round, Abel’s is kicking off Spring featuring a seasonal flavor, Purple Daze (Black Raspberry ice cream with a black raspberry crinkle, and dark chocolate black raspberry cups.) and our most popular flavor, Stellar Coffee (If you’re a coffee lover, this is a must have... there is no better! Rich Coffee Club® ice cream with delicious fudge and mini dark chocolate coffee cups.) 1

Jen and I want to thank all our league team players for your support and trust in us to help you improve your doubles game. We really enjoyed it and it was our pleasure to work with you all season long. Unfortunately, the Coronavirus Pandemic has changed our lives, including how we try to get our exercise. For those of us that love to play tennis on a regular basis, and have a difficult time staying away from the game, we have listed some safety procedures and practices recommended by concerned tennis pros, if you plan to play a social match.

3. Maintain a distance of 6 feet at all times. This is especially important during change over. 4. Sanitize your hands after each set. 5. Use new balls or sanitized balls for each set. 6. After the game disinfect balls and sanitize hands 7. BYOW (wipes) to games. We also have safety procedures and practices in place for private lessons and clinics. We look forward to the days that we can return to our normal lives and routines. Until then, stay safe and healthy, play if you can and watch tennis channel/ archived matches to keep your game and mind sharp.

Manager’s report By Kevin Lechlitner The 2020 season is coming to an end. While everyone is still around, I’d like to take this opportunity to ask you to update your contact information with us. Please let someone in the office know if any of your contact info has changed i.e. email, home or cell phone numbers, etc. If you are seasonal, it would be good to have your contact info for up north as well. Members come in regularly throughout the year looking for ways to reach their friends and neighbors. I’d like to recognize some of the members who have played intricate roles in organizing events for you this season. The Landings Free College has been going strong every week since the beginning of the year thanks to Ralph Ricapito and Irv Kushner. They have had some interesting topics and the events have been well attended. Thanks also to our Movie Night committee of Bob Manteiga, Tobi Schneider and Eileen Lazaroff. There is one more Movie Night currently on the calendar for April 17th. Paige Packman and her Happy Hour committee also deserve some recognition. That is a wonderful social function that is relatively new on the Club calendar. I’d also like to thank our Tennis Professionals Adrian Moghina & Jen Fiers for organizing all the social tennis functions and exhibitions this season. Keep your eyes open for details on our season ending Landings Day event coming up soon! On a sad note, our Jazzercise instructor Patti Horvath has informed me that she is retiring from Jazzercise. She has been our instructor for longer than I’ve been here. Patti was wonderful to work with and I know her students really enjoyed her classes. I wish her the best of luck in her retirement. She will certainly be missed. If the Coronavirus pandemic slows down and life gets back to normal in time, we plan to host our Annual Memorial Day BBQ on Monday, May 25th. This is normally one of the largest events of the year. We typically have around 140 people including roughly 30 veterans. It will be the normal menu of hot dogs and hamburgers with all the side dishes. As usual, military veterans, the guests of honor, will be complimentary. Look for the sign-up sheet in the Tennis Pro Shop in late April.

Jeff Smith

Joins LMA Board of Directors By Diana Colson Jeff Smith is one of two newly elected LMA board members. He will be serving a two-year term, while Jim Goldman will be serving for one year.

later, he received an MBA in International Business from Cornell. He was to work in management positions in agricultural import/ export over a thirty-year period.

tors for the Community Resource Center in Mamaroneck, NY. If that was not enough, he became the local director of Midnight Run, an organization serving NYC homeless, a post he held for ten years. While his children were young, their dad coached Basketball, Little League, and Soccer for both girls and boys at various levels. He also served on the Executive Development Committee of Boston College. In September of 2018, Jeff finally retired, and he and Judi moved permanently into their renovated condo at The Landings. “I’ve watched Sarasota grow over thirty-five years. It is a cultural center, a medical center, and suddenly it has become a restaurant scene! One of the other pleasant surprises in Sarasota is that you can take advantage of first-class

education.” A lifelong learner, Jeff has currently enrolled in a class given by OLLI at Ringling College. At the old converted Sarasota High, he takes a physics class: “Exploring the Universe: A Look at 20th Century Physics and Cosmology. It is taught by a former head of the Physics Department at Harvard University. Jeff can’t hold back a grin: “It’s so challenging!” Of his recent appointment, he says: “When it comes to being on the LMA board, I’m someone who likes to volunteer. It was my opportunity to contribute to a place that is near and dear to me and my family.” Jeff Smith will bring a wonderful energy to the board. He intends to maintain the tradition of a high quality of life which is a hallmark of The Landings experience.

Jeff with wife Judi Smith

Originally from the Boston/ New York area, Jeff and his wife, Judi, have been visiting The Landings for more than 30 years. His in-laws, Ed and Ella Redding (Ed still resides happily on Heron Way) had purchased one of the very first condominiums. Jeff and Judi liked the place so much, they became owners of their own condo in 2005, also on Heron Way. The couple brought their three children to visit often while growing up: Jeffrey (now an entertainment lawyer in LA); Lizzie (who now works for Amazon in Seattle); and Cathleen (who now works for Google in San Francisco). The last year was a big one for the Smith tribe: all three of the children were married, with weddings in Los Angeles, Carmel Valley, and Rye, NY. Jeff first met his wife in high school in Locust Valley, NY, but the romance did not blossom until they were in college. After marriage, Judi went on to have a successful career in Real Estate in Southern Westchester County. Jeff had graduated from Boston College in 1972, with a B.S. in economics and business. Two years

Although domiciled in New York, his work took him to the four corners of the earth. His job was to connect International buyers with U.S. Midwest sellers of the country’s largest agricultural category: wheat, corn and soybeans. It was a case of simple supply and demand and Jeff played a role in the movement of surplus grain around the world. Following his work in the corporate sector, he became an independent consultant to international development banks such as the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In addition to commodity risk management, he focused on corporate governance and strategic management issues. In 2006 Jeff attended Columbia where he enrolled in Executive Education, completing a course in “Business Leadership in Not for Profit”. Freed from the daily grind, he put those Columbia studies to good use. An avid tennis player, Jeff became tennis governor at two clubs in Westchester, NY. He also served on the Board of Direc-

The availability of food sources in close proximity to potential den sites attracts female raccoons to nest. The presence of food sources is one reason raccoon populations can grow rapidly and become very large in urban and suburban areas. Eliminating food sources is the first step to deter raccoons. Secure the trash can. Leaving trash out that’s easily accessible is a great way to attract raccoons. When you take your garbage out or if you leave it outside, make sure it’s in a heavy trash can with a secure lid. You might also consider placing cans in a rack or tying them to a secure post and using a bungee cord or piece of wire to keep the lids in place. Bring in pet food. Pet food that’s put outdoors should be brought in before nightfall to keep raccoons from finding and eating out of your pet’s dish.

How to get rid of raccoons

OFFERING ONLY PRIVATE ROOMS

Keep an eye on your bird feeders. Whether you use a special feeder, a shepherd’s hook or simply bring your feeders in at night, it’s a good idea to use at least one method to deter raccoons. The birds will appreciate it too! Pick up fallen fruits and nuts. Yes, raccoons will venture into your yard even for the natural food that falls off the trees. Keeping it cleaned up will make your yard less attractive. Never intent ionally provide food for raccoons. You shouldn’t try to feed raccoons and you

Once you’ve gotten rid of readily available food sources, you’ll want to reduce access to potential den sites. Without a place to nest, raccoons won’t be interested in sticking around for very long. Y a r d w o r k . Yo u c a n s t a r t eliminating den sites by simply cleaning up your yard. Remove wood piles, thin out overgrown shrubbery, trim tree branches to reduce access to your roof. If you can, try to cut overhanging branches so that there is a 5-foot gap between your roof and the tree. You might also consider getting rid of trellises and arbors that offer easier access to your roof. Seal off your chimney. Chimneys are a favorite nesting spot of raccoons, which is why it’s a good idea to cover yours with a spark arrester or chimney cap. Make sure the cap is tightly secured upon installation to prevent raccoons from pulling it loose. You also want to make sure there are no animals inside the chimney before covering the opening. If a family of raccoons has already taken up residence, you’ll probably need to hire a professional to remove them. Seal off other entry points. While chimneys are a favorite, raccoons will find other places to nest in and around your house. Sealing of potential entry points, before they’ve been discovered, is the best way to keep raccoons away. Close off open spaces beneath structures, such as porches, decks and garden and tool sheds, with 10-gauge 1/4- or 1/3-inch galvanized hardware mesh. Then install it so the bottom edge of the wire is buried at least 6 inches deep, extended outward for 12 inches, and then back-covered with soil. Getting to know the artists of The Landings By Marie-Louise McHugh When I joined the Landoliers choral group last December, I was placed in the soprano section next to Joan Campbell, a striking looking woman I did not know. I had the surprise of my life when she started singing with an amazingly beautiful, rich and powerful voice I had never experienced up close before. Yes, Joan is an opera singer, recently retired but still active in three local choral groups as a soloist. Joan has been a resident of The Landings for just over a year. She was born in Philadelphia. Early on, her parents provided her with piano and later cello lessons. During her junior year at the Overbrook high school, her cello teacher encouraged her to take up singing lessons. Following her studies at Temple University, she was invited to study at the Curtis Institute of Music on a scholarship. The Curtis Institute of Music is a private conservatory in Philadelphia, where she studied

Joan says that, when you retire as a singer in Germany, you stop singing. There the state mandates that you retire between 55 and 65 years of age. She explains that at that point the voice ages, especially for women. One is not as strong any longer and you need a very strong physical condition to sustain big sounds on the operatic stage. Joan is lucky and her voice is still strong so she continues to sing. Here in Sarasota she sings in four groups, three of them professional ones. She found that there is no stigma of age around here, which she considers a gift. Upon moving here, she started singing with the Choral Artists of Sarasota, she is a soloist at the Church of the Redeemer, an Episcopal Church in town where she sang in the Messiah last Christmas, and as a soloist at Temple Emanuel of Sarasota. In her free time, she is ushering at the Florida Studio Theater and at the Sarasota Opera. Joan enjoys her walks around The Landings, the luxury of beautiful weather and the welcoming community and life she found here. Joan as Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto Opera

BIRDS IN OUR BACKYARD

SMALL BIRDS  By Robert Manteiga and Maralyn Kaufman-David, With Spring around the corner and lots of ‘snowbirds’ in residence, we decided to highlight several ‘small birds’ that are found both here in The Landings and in more northern regions of North America. According to the ornithologist Frank Gill, these birds are of the “Order Passeriformes (songbirds or perching birds), with 5,700 species in 74 families (depending on the authority) worldwide”. This order is a complex assemblage that contains more than half of all known bird species and is the youngest order in the evolutionary sequence of bird orders that start with marine species and ratites (ostrich, rhea, emu, cassowary, kiwi, and extinct moa and elephant bird) and ends with songbirds! Here we highlight Bob Manteiga’s knowledge about and beautiful photos of songbirds!! The three most common subspecies of wren in our region of Florida are the house wren, the Carolina wren, and the marsh wren. If you put a birdhouse in your backyard, more than likely it will be the wren that decides to make it its home. The wren is a small bird (4 to 6 inches) with a white streaked crown, black and brown striped wings and tail, and white underbelly. They don’t sing…they clack! Pictured here is the rear end of the Carolina wren, which has a more pronounced white head streak and a slightly longer bill than the others. FUN FACT: One male mute swan weighs the same as 1,400 wrens. Wrens will nest communally in winter, with as many as 10 birds spending the night together in a single nestbox. The maximum recorded roosting together is 61. The family name for the wrens is Troglodytidae, which means cave dweller. Dozens of the hundreds of warbler subspecies in the world are found here in Florida. The yellow-throated, the black and white, palm, yellow-rumped, orange-crowned, Tennessee, and Kentucky warblers are the most common varieties in this area. These birds are small, about the size of the wren (3 ½ - 4 ½ inches), and are beautiful songbirds…with a song that sounds like ‘zwee,

APRIL 2020 are generally a bit slimmer than the mockingbird or the robin. The thrasher song is more of a ‘chack, chack, chack’. Unlike the mockingbird, which likes higher branches, the thrasher is often found on or near the ground. The thrasher diet consists of insects and fruit. FUN FACT: A male mockingbird can learn up to 200 different songs. Brown Thrashers are attributed with the largest repertoire of songs, with a total of 3000 distinct songs! Pictured here are the northern mockingbird and brown thrasher. The tufted titmouse and the black-capped chickadee are both members of the Paridae family. Ironically, these two species are often seen together in northern parts of the country, the chickadee is rarely seen here in Florida. The tufted titmouse looks like a small female cardinal. Its body is grey, not brown, and it has some yellow on its belly. Its song is ‘peter, peter, peter’. FUN FACT: Tufted Titmice have an alarm call that seems to fade off into the distance, giving the impression that the bird is moving from one place to another. Birdwatchers and predators alike can be fooled into chasing this ghost call while the titmouse stays securely hidden out of sight. Woodpeckers and flickers are common to this area of Florida. The common flicker, the red-bellied woodpecker, and the pileated woodpecker are often spotted tapping on trees or the sides of some wooden homes in search of insects. The pileated woodpecker is the “Woody Woodpecker” we used to see on TV…a large black bird with a bright red crest. Ironically, the red-bellied woodpecker does not have a red belly, but a red head and black and white striped wings and a white belly. The flicker has a grey, not a red patch on its head and a black spotted belly. FUN FACT: A red-bellied woodpecker can stick out its tongue up to two inches past the tip of its beak. Pictured here is the red-bellied woodpecker. Hope these highlights spur you on to some beautiful Spring bird watching and listening! LAURIE WALLER Volunteers for ITNSuncoast By Diana Colson ITN stands for the Independent Transportation Network, a nonprofit, community based organization providing dignified, consumer-orientated transportation for seniors and people with visual impairments. ITNSunCoast is the Sarasota based version: it provides transportation services to local individuals who are at least sixty years old or adults of any age who have experienced vision loss. Their mission is to help people maintain their independence through a convenient, comfortable and affordable transportation option. Volunteers provide rides for any reason, on any day of the week including weekends and holidays, to anywhere within Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Rides are provided by a combination of volunteer and paid drivers who use their own vehicles. This is a wonderful and compassionate organization which could certainly use more volunteer drivers! Laurie Waller of The Landings has found this to be a gratifying place to volunteer. She is delighted to be providing seniors with transportation, and has found the experience simple, non-intrusive,

worthwhile, and rewarding. She started three years ago in Westchester, NY, after witnessing how devastating it had been for her elderly father to give up his car. It was her Dad’s biggest challenge and forever changed his life! It is important for seniors to be able to get out – not just for medical appointments, but also for trips to the grocery store, the hairdresser, the bank. It is their link to the outside world, and these independent forays also serve to keep their spirits high. Laurie recalls chauffeuring two elderly ladies w h o w e re h e a d e d f o r Arthur Murray Dance Studio. APRIL 2020

Just for Laughs Compiled by Dee Ricapito & staff My husband cooks for me like I’m a God—by placing burnt offerings before me every night. What happens when an artist has trouble finding inspiration? He draws a blank. A policeman stops a man one night for driving erratically through the streets of Dublin. He pulled him over and asked if he’d been drinking. “Aye, ‘‘tis Friday you know me and the lads had six or seven pints. Then went to happy hour where they served s o m e re a l g o o d m a rg a r i t a s . Then at my friends house we had a couple pints of Guinness - couldn’t be rude. I even have a bottle of whiskey here for later. Sir, the officer said, “I need you to step out of the car and take a Breathalyzer test”. “Why? The indignant man said. “Don’t ye believe me?” After the bars closed for the night, a police officer pulled over a young man, and said, “Son, your eyes look bloodshot. You been drinkin’?” The man shook his head and said, “No, officer. But your eyes look kind of glazed. You been eatin’ doughnuts?” Getting Old • I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People get out of the way much faster now. • Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers. • I didn’t make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row. • I d e c i d e d t o s t o p c a l l i n g the bathroom the “John” and renamed it the “Jim”. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning. • Old age is coming at a really bad time. • When I was a child I thought “Nap Time” was a punishment. Now, as a grownup, it feels like a small vacation. • The biggest lie I tell myself is” I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it.” • I don’t have gray hair; I have “wisdom highlights”! I’m just very wise. • If God wanted me to touch my toes, He would’ve put them on my knees. • Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven’t met yet. • Why do I have to press one for English when you’re just going to transfer me to someone I can’t understand anyway? • Of course, I talk to myself. Sometimes I need expert advice. • At my age “Getting lucky” means walking into a room and remembering why I went in there. • Actually, I’m not complaining because I am a Senager. (senior teenager). I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 60 years later. I don’t have to go to school or work. I get an allowance every month. I have my own pad. I don’t have a curfew. I have a driver ’s license and my own car. The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant. And I don’t have acne. Life is great. Island Humor Three boys are in the schoolyard bragging of how great their fathers are. The first one says: “Well, my

A guy rings his boss and says “Sorry, I can’t come to work today.” The boss asks him, “Why not?” The guy said, “It’s my eyes.” “Why? What’s wrong with your eyes?” asks the boss. The guy says, “I just can’t see myself coming to work, so I’m going fishing instead.” A woman wakes in the middle of the night to find her husband not in bed. She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him in the kitchen sitting at the table with a cup of hot cocoa in front of him. He appears to be in deep thought, just staring at the wall. She watches as he wipes away a tear from his eye. “What’s the matter, dear?” she whispers as she enters the room. “Why are you down here at this time of night?” The husband looks up from his drink, “It’s the 20th anniversary of the day we met,” he said. She can’t believe he remembered, and she starts to tear up. The husband continues, “Do you remember 20 years ago when we started dating? I was 18 and you were only 15,” he said solemnly. Once again, the woman is moved to tears thinking her husband is so caring and sensitive. “Yes, I do,” she replies. The husband pauses, the words are not coming easily … “Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car?” he asks. “Yes, I remember,” she said, as she lowered herself into the chair next to him. The husband continued. “Do you remember when he shoved the shotgun in my face and said , Either you marry my daughter or I will see to it that I would spend the next 20 years in prison?” “I remember that, too,” she said softly. He sighed and wiped another tear from his cheek and said, “I would have gotten out of prison today.”

father runs the fastest. He can fire an arrow, and start to run, I tell you, he gets there before the arrow”. The second one says: “Ha! You think that’s fast! My father is a hunter. He can shoot his gun and be there before the bullet”. The third one listens to the other two and shakes his head. He then says: “You two know nothing about fast. My father is a civil servant. He stops working at 4:30 and he is home by 3:45”!! The rain was pouring down. There standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub was an old Scotsman, drenched, holding a stick, with a piece of string dangling in the water. A passer-by stopped and asked, “What are you doing?” Fishing.” replied the old man. Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent says, “Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me.” In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskies, the gent, being a bit of a smart ass, cannot resist asking, “So how many have you caught today?” “You’re the eighth”, said the old guy.
