Meet Don McMurray, President of LMA Dr. Donald A. McMurray, PhD, wears many hats: athlete, psychologist, professor. Currently a licensed psychologist, he works for Comprehensive MedPsych Services and also heads up Mental Edge/Sports Training - mental fitness training for athletes of all sports and all levels of skill. Always an athlete, Don attended college on a basketball scholarship and has been a serious tennis player all his life.

As a psychologist, he has served as an expert witness for the judicial system in a variety of forensic cases. He has done psychological evaluations for the judicial system, community mental health system, Children & Family Services, school system, bureau of disability determination, Worker’s Compensation, drug and alcohol system, and vocational rehabilitation. If that’s not enough, he also works with individuals and couples.

Don McMurray received a BS in Political Science from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, and then went on to earn an MA in Counseling Psychology from the University of South Florida in Tampa. He graduated in 1975 with a PhD

in Counseling Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. While working on that doctorate, he worked as a psychologist for the Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh.

In the mid-70’s, Don became Associate Dean of Administration and Finance at Antioch University in Columbia, Maryland. Prior to that, he served as Associate Professor at Antioch University at their New England Graduate School in Keene, NH. During this time he also maintained a private practice. While at Antioch, he met his wife, Meredith—also a clinical psychologist—and they had two children.

They had gone on holiday to Sanibel in the mid 80’s, but the weather did not cooperate with their vacation plans. One rainy day they took a drive up the West Coast of Florida, and fell in love with Sarasota. Both Don and Meredith realized the community had much to offer.

Their son, Creighton, was in 8th grade and a perfect fit for Pine View, while their daughter, Jennifer, was about to head off to Mount Holyoke College. The family moved, and Don started his private practice all over again. They lived for a year on Lido before settling into a tree house on Landing’s Circle.

Don became the CEO of Suncoast Psychometrics, dealing with psychological evaluations and assessments, clinical consultation, inservice training, and expert witness services with children, adolescents, and adults. He also consulted at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Doctor’s Hospital, Lakewood Ranch, and Health South. Meredith— now retired—worked for a number of years as a clinical psychologist at the employee assistance program at SMH.

Around 2000, a wonderful tree house became available, a place the McMurray’s loved for its breathtaking view. They seized the opportunity and made it their home. Here Don developed his program called Mental Fitness Training, designed to improve confidence and concentration in athletes.

In a recent article Don wrote for Totally Tennis, he said: “While it may appear you have no control over your thoughts, this simply is not true! You have tremendous control. You can and must take control of your thoughts by overriding the negatives and replacing them with positive words and phrases.”

Today, son Creighton lives in Atlanta and is in the restaurant

business. He has just completed the LSAT, is currently applying to Law School, and will be heading towards a career change.

Daughter Jennifer is a computer tech person employed by the University of Waikato. She lives with her husband and their 4-year old son in Hamilton, New Zealand. She and her family were recent visitors at her parent’s home in The Landings.

A believer in serving the community in which you live, Don McMurray was active in the Tree House Association before joining the Landings Management Board. At LMA, he served as Treasurer and as Vice President, before being elected President of the organization in February of 2015.

LMA Decal Verification

Letters have gone out to owners of properties in Carriagehouse II notifying them that the decals registered to them will be suspended on April 1st unless they take action before that date to re-validate them.

Owners can avoid suspension by re-validating

their decals before April 1, 2015. Owners who will be gone for the month their decals are scheduled to be deactivated may go to the Main Gate before they leave to complete the verification process. The form will be available on The Landings website and from the Main Gate.

|Speeding And Safety Discussion Extends Lma Meeting Past 2 Hours Newly elected LMA Pres.

Don McMurray opened his first meeting by welcoming and introducing new Board members. He announced strategic planning process activity will increase in the next few months as the Board considers future missions, goals, and objectives. McMurray also reviewed the motion and voting process of the Board.

Before asking for committee reports, McMurray announced the names of a few new committees that have been or will be formed. One is the Communications Committee.

This committee would coordinate the wide range of communications activities between LMA and The Eagle, the website, community contacts, brochures and other communications issues. Bob Manteiga and Joan Lowery have agreed to serve on this committee.

Another new committee will be named the Community Events Committee. New board member Doug Day and Judy Green have agreed to serve on this committee. The committee will centrally coordinate all the events that take place at The Landings.

Another new committee will be named the Environmental Committee. Board member John Carson has agreed to serve on this committee tasked with addressing environmental concerns at The Landings.

A Technology Committee will be formed. This committee will address issues regarding video cameras, radar issues and many computer related

concerns. Dick Bayles has agreed they were entrusted to do has been accomplished. As a result to serve on this committee. he feels there is no need to have an Archive Committee. LAKES

Lakes chair, Larry Lawrence reported after a meeting with Sarasota County Stormwater management he believed the county would take a more active role in the care and cleanup of the Lakes. An adjustable weir has been installed on Lake-9 in an effort to raise the lake level during the dry season. This is experimental and may or may not be continued. Lake fountains have been repaired and many bulbs replaced.

Letter to the Editor My wife and I have lived in The Landings for the past 23 years and have ALWAYS paid our yearly assessment on time.

For some unknown reason we did not receive our notice from Argus Property Mgt. (either not mailed or lost in the mail). We also never received a reminder or even a phone call, instead the only notice we got was the invoice with a late fee and a late interest fee totaling $125.01. We immediately mailed the yearly assessment and called Argus about voiding the ridiculous charges explaining what took place.

President’s Column Spring is here and we will be losing a number of our residents as they journey north for the summer. We wish all of you that head north at this time of year - a safe and pleasant journey and a quick return to our community.

The New Residents reception was held on March 14th at the LRC. It was well attended, with approximately 70 people mingling and getting to know one another.

Following a Town Hall meeting on February 11th the board addressed a number of the proposals at its last Board Meeting on March 5th. A healthy, engaged discussion followed, with a few resolutions being reached and a few proposals being tabled for later discussion and action. As all of you know when issues such as speeding and safety on our roads are discussed people have different and, at times, passionate opinions.

At its regular February board meeting the board approved a roof replacement on Peregrine Point Drive, a partial patio enclosure on Peregrine Point Circle W and the removal of a tree on Peregrine Point Drive.

The owner of property on Pine Harrier Drive will be asked to attend the next board meeting to discuss a home

A final attempt to resolve a drainage violation on Peregrine Point Way will be undertaken prior to turning the matter over to counsel.

The next board meeting of the Association will be on April 9, 2015.

|Phillippi Farmhouse Market – Sarasota’s Original Wednesday Market (9 am – 2 pm) April is the final month of the seasonal Phillippi Farmhouse Market. Local produce at Brown’s Grove, Honeyside Farms and Greens on the Gro hydroponics will continue to be strong with Florida blueberries, cabbage and cantaloupe. Seasonal melons also include watermelon and various varieties of honey dew. |The “Kitchen Ladies” Recipe

BONNIE & ROB DOMBROSKY’S - PEA SALAD I’ve tasted this salad and begged them to give it to The Eagle. It’s easy; and Bonnie and Rob always like to make tasty, healthful dishes. They enjoy sharing ideas and duties in the kitchen.

PEA SALAD - Mixture of colorful salad greens - 2 cups frozen peas - 1 bunch of fresh mint leaves - 2 Avocados - Splash white wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar - Olive oil. to taste Place the frozen peas in a bowl and add some chopped mint.

Pour olive oil and white wine vinegar (or balsamic vinegar) to taste covering the peas.

Pour the peas with the dressing over the salad greens. Top it with the sliced avocado and more chopped mint on top and serve immediately. (Salt and pepper can be added at the table if desired).

Which Eagle Has Landed?

Don and Bev Leidel, 20 plus year residents of The Landings spent two months down at son Peter’s Watercross Ranch in Dime Box, Texas to help other son, Michael with a broken and surgically repaired leg.

While there, they realized they didn’t have The Landings Eagle for photos to send back home, so improvised with an Eagle newspaper they came across and decided to have a bit of fun.

Landings Learning Group Closes Season on a High Note The final program of the 2015 LLG series came to a close on March 18th .The audience was treated to an exciting performance

by Dr. Joseph Holt, a delightful and talented pianist and Soprano Deborah Polkinghorn Suta, singing the music from Lerner and Loewe Musicals. It was thrilling to hear “Wouldn’t it be Loverly” (My Fair Lady), “Almost Like Being in Love” (Brigadoon) “I could have danced All Night” (My Fair Lady).

All of the 2015 programs were the result of hard work and dedication of the LLG Planning Committee members. Our thanks and appreciation are owed to the Landings Learning Group Planning Committee; Estelle Colten, Adrienne & Howard Feltman, Bridget Frymier, Ute Hargreaves, Linda Morgenlander, Selma Savren, Earl Schaffer, Irv Spector, and Ron Wilson.

The final 2015 program was dedicated to Henry Rhodes, past president of Landings Management Association. Henry guided the Landings community for the past five years in a bold and forward thinking style of leadership. Henry’s leadership style instituted disciplined management techniques that made The Landings better organized to face future challenges. An expression of appreciation was extended to Henry by the audience with spontaneous applause.

This season the LLG was able to provide The Eagle with a wonderful tableau of photos of each program. Racquet Club News |President’s Report By Dick Bayles A brief reminder that Landings Day this year is on Friday, April 10th. Once again we will feature “tennis for fun” including a dunk tank for everyone to take out their frustrations on our pros.

The Pro Shop remodeling project will begin the week before Landings Day, with the move of its operations over the last two days of that week to the multi-purpose room in the Fitness Center.

The work will include new entrance doors, tile floor and lighting. A new reception desk will be relocated to the left of the front entrance with Kevin moving to a new office where the existing reception desk is. Joe will move to Kevin’s current office along with our accounting operations. New shelving, furniture, insulation and data wiring and repainting will complete the renovation.

The work is scheduled to last six weeks, putting us back in the remodeled Pro Shop by June 1st. Except for the physical relocation, all Pro Shop activities will function as usual.

Now that season is winding down, it is time to start our major capital project for the year.

The Pro Shop renovation is scheduled to begin by the middle of April. We will bring it up to the standard set by the other buildings we have recently renovated. In early April, the staff will start to set up our make-shift Pro Shop in the Multipurpose room of the Fitness Center. Normal merchandise and services will remain during the project. We hope to be back in the new Pro Shop by the beginning of June.

Several new Wilson demo racquets have arrived and are ready for you to try them out. If you fall in love with one, let me know your grip size and I will special order it from Wilson. It is usually here in three days. If you have

your eye on a racquet from a different company, please let me know what it is. I can still order it for you and possibly at a lower price.

Thank you to all the members that have registered their in-house guests in advance with the Pro Shop staff. It seems like everyone has family and friends visit during season. This new policy has really helped us keep everything straight in the office. As a reminder for those that aren’t aware, in-house guests must be registered in the office in advance or a guest fee will be charged.

Please mark your calendars for our Annual Memorial Day BBQ on May 25th. This is usually our largest event of the year. Last year we had around 135 people. It will be the normal menu of hot dogs and hamburgers with all the side dishes. As always, wartime military veterans will be complimentary. CANUKUS Tennis Challenge

Our Annual CANUKUS tennis challenge was held Sunday, March 22nd. As usual, the spectators were treated to some excellent tennis.

Due to time constraints with the players, all three matches went out at 9:00 AM. On court #3 Americans Joe Bachmann and Earl Tomkins played CANUKS Bill Barry and Steve Thompson.

They had a close three set match with Joe and Earl emerging victorious 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

Court #2 featured Americans Jack Ambrose and John Fournier versus CAUNUKS Andre Marois and Peter Gonda. This match also went the distance with the CANUKS pulling it out in the end 2-6, 6-4, 10-7. Just like every time since the event started in 2004, it all came down to the final match.

The players on Court #1 were Americans Mark Anderson and Ed Cunningham against CANUKS Allan Chair Umpire Guy Mileni Thompson and Peter Bonfa. Allan and Peter won a close first set 7-5. The Americans rallied to take the second set 6-4. The players decided to play a match tie break in lieu of a full third set. When it was all said and done, Mark and Ed sealed the

overall victory for the American team 10-7.

Special thanks to Barrie Taylor for organizing the event and Guy Mileni for being the chair umpire. Based on the amount of grocery bags in my office, Barrie will have a full trunk when he heads to the All Faiths Food bank this afternoon.

Round Table Discussion Group RTDG hosts Al Goldis, “My Life in Baseball” Al talked to a large crowd of attendees ranging in age from 8 years old to over 80!

He shared his baseball and basketball experience from his high school and college days in Philadelphia. Al also played in the oldest Semi Pro League that Connie Mack actually played in. He signed with Cincinnati, and even played with Pete Rose when Rose was a Rookie.

Al had many interesting facts, one being that baseball started in Ireland. They called this new game, “Rounders” in the 1800’s. The first Semi Pro team was called the Cincinnati Red Stockings and was developed in the late 1850’s. The first real professional team was the Chicago White Stockings.

He worked as an Asst. General Manager for Gene Autry, and a Baseball Scout for Steinbrenner loving every facet of his jobs even those dealing with the inner workings of the club’s finances.

Brazilian Red Cloak Megaskepasma Erythrochlamys: Brazilian Red Cloak has stunning upright scarlet flower cones, with white shrimp like flowers extending out of the centers of the dark pink to deep red flowers. It is a tall upright shrub that can reach 12 -15 feet, but can be trimmed to 6-7 foot and still bloom well. It flowers most of the year, but blooms most heavily in the spring and autumn. The Brazilian Red cloak is an under used plant that is becoming more known due to its sheer beauty. When people see this plant at a botanical garden or specialty nursery they cannot resist putting one in their own garden. You can see two Brazilian red cloaks in full bloom at the Sarasota Garden Club Botanical Gardens this spring. The Sarasota Garden Club is open free of charge to the public.

Tip: Brazilian red cloak does well in full sun to part shade, and likes regular watering.

Our Moment in Myanmar What felt like a moment was really two days. The country has such scenic beauty, even the dust filled landscape holds a feeling of mystical Buddhist purity. The remote villages we went through to Yangon, (formerly Rangoon, Burma), were mainly made up of huts and dirt roads. The villagers were not accustomed to seeing tourist. They have been an isolated country under harshly imposed military rule over fifty years and is newly opened to tourists. Our bus had a police escort and everyone smiled and waved with curiosity, as did we!

site. Its people pray, even picnic, while paying their respects and enjoy the place. But, that day it was mobbed with pilgrims, young people, Buddhist monks, nuns, tourists and more. Yet, it felt peaceable among all the goings on. All are proud of this beautiful solid gold, diamond and jewel encrusted monument.

There were hundreds of religious structures surrounding it, some with relics in them, others are smaller square hollow temples - all ornate and maintained as treasures. Pictures do not do it justice since it’s vast in size.

We were required to take off our shoes and socks out of respect at all the Burmese pagodas. There was another sacred shrine we visited which housed a centuries old huge, but charming, Reclining Buddha with its face painted and lacquered.

The look of old Asia was fascinating. Yet, the center of the city square was surrounded by many mid-sized buildings, with pockets of newly built apartment complexes, and some badly restored ones along the way back to the pier. The workers dressed in modern casual attire. They did wear a traditional yellow face paint for beauty and sun protection.

As a last thought; go before so many others do. With political changes and foreign investment pouring into the country, its spectacular scenery and warm, welcoming people may change quickly.

Part VII - Landings at 25 – Encore |Landings South

By Irwin Starr Landings South 1-VII may be the most confusing of developments to those of us who don’t live there.

It consists of 190 units in seven separate developments, managed by seven different condominium associations.

The Portside Villas are the most distinct as they are a series of duplexes totaling 18 units, as reviewed last month. All are single story with two car garages.

The remaining Landings South units are all what many northerners call upper and lower flats, with single car garages. They are formally called “coach houses” presumably from the tradition of housing over the building holding the coach, or vehicle on large estates.

With the initial sales of Landings South, starting at Landings Blvd. and Heron Way came automatic and

mandatory membership in the Landings Racquet Club. When Landings III was initially marketed it was pitched as “The Landings Racquet Club” The largest Landings South association is Landings South III with 42 units in 5 buildings.

Early recorded sales in Landings I were in 1985 at about $134,000. The last initial sales were in Landings VII in 1990 in the $135,000-160,000 range.

Despite the recent real estate “recession” the units have shown appreciation, selling in the mid-$200,000’s. Prior to the recession some sold in the low to mid $300,000 range. Recent sales have been in the $250,000 range.

Landings at 25 - In the First Person With a little bit of luck and a lot of curiosity, we found our future in The Landings during the summer of 1986. Our home at the time was situated on Phillippi Creek, almost directly across from where all this “mysterious” developing was taking place. Mysterious – because we couldn’t see past all the trees and lush greenery that fronted U.S. 41. (Really, no shopping center existed!)

We had taken our golden retriever along for this visit, thinking he’d enjoy romping around the pleasant country setting, and he did – galloping around the lovely old trees, sniffing after squirrels and barking happily at the huge population of birds. But no sooner had we passed the unoccupied gatehouse, when a booming (definitely not very friendly) voice hollered, “YOU ARE TRESPASSING! YOU ARE SUBJECT TO A FINE! GET YOUR DOG AND GET OUT OF HERE! We complied (mostly because I couldn’t be sure he didn’t have a gun).

Nevertheless, it takes a lot to discourage us, and we returned a few days later (minus our dog) and approached the trailer office located just outside the gate where anyone interested enough could go in and study the maps. The really curious could brave the winding, unpaved

roads inside that led to structures designated as “tree houses,” and it was easy to understand why. The Landings and trees were synonymous, and these lovely new structures blended right in with the landscape. By October, we had made several more visits to the trailer office where the salesman tried to steer us to units being constructed in the Portside Villas and priced at $115,000. But at the same time, we learned of a condo for resale just across the road from the Villas. The unit had been used as a sort of weekend retreat by folks who had a larger home down in Englewood. Indeed, none of the kitchen appliances had ever been used! But it was the view that sold us.

The generous lanai faced west, and we could see clear over to Siesta Key and a magnificent, unobstructed sunset. Heron Way, Starling and Eagles Point were just designated roads on the builder’s plans. But even before construction began, our association, known as Landings South I, and the Portside Villas (Landings South II) bonded in a pleasant neighborly way. We had a combined meeting in our condo to get to know one another and discuss mutual concerns. Ah, yes . . . those were the days........

The Alpine Steakhouse has been a local, family-owned business for more than 40 years.

A Sarasota staple for more than 40 years, the Alpine Steakhouse is a family-owned business that has evolved with its three generations of owners.

It’s a German market, butcher shop, deli and restaurant all under the same chalet-style roof. But it hasn’t always been that way. In 1972, current owner Matt Rebhan’s grandfather Henry moved from New York to Sarasota.

“He opened up the first store in 1973,” Rebhan said.

“But at that time, it was more of a grocery store with a bakery and a meat market.”

Later on Rebhan’s father Mark took over ownership, and in 2003, passed it over to his son. Today, one of the biggest draws for the business has to be the primary focal point in the dining area--the room-long meat case.

“People come here for cuts they can’t get any other place, and specialty meats,” Rebhan said. “This is really an oldfashioned butcher shop.”

The words “old-fashioned” bring to mind connotations of quality product s and personalized customer service, both of which are emphasized at Alpine. If a customer dining in the restaurant wants to go to the butcher case and pick out their steak, that’s fine. One can even walk over to the market

section, which showcases a bevy of German foods, and pick up items to take home.

The restaurant serves lunch and dinner, which include soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts--all fresh and homemade. But from the moment you walk in the door, it’s clear that the stars of the show are the meats.

“Ultimately it’s a steakhouse,” Rebhan said.

“We’re really known for our hand-cut, never-frozen meats, and we also carry Japanese Kobe.”

In 2007, Alpine Steakhouse and the Rebhan family entered the annals of pop culture when The Food Network and TV personality Guy Fieri came to the restaurant to film an episode for the network’s popular show “Diners, DriveIns and Dives.” Fieri wanted to feature another item for which the Alpine is wellknown--turducken.

Originally created by a New Orleans chef, the turducken consists of a boneless chicken stuffed in a boneless duck, which is then stuffed in a turkey. Inside are lots of goodies, like dressing, Andouille sausage, spinach and many other ingredients.

“It’s kind of like Thanksgiving all in one bite,” Rebhan said. “It’s very colorful, and slow-roasted

for 15 hours. We ship the turduckens all around the U.S.” But no matter what is ordered at Alpine, one can be assured that it is fresh and completely homemade. All the salads, more than 40 different kinds of soups and many of the deli items are made right on site.

Coming up is the Easter holiday and Alpine Steakhouse, as usual, will do a booming business.

“We carry strictly domestic legs of lamb and racks from Colorado,” Rebhan said.

“Then, of course, we’ll have fresh hams, smoked hams, fresh Polish Kielbasa, turducken, our tenderloins and rib roast.”

Nature’s Wondrous Curves

Everywhere we look we see neat geometric shapes.

One of the most famous ones is the Sine Curve. You see this curve when you look at a meandering river below out of an airplane window. Its curves are sinusoidal. Our hearts beat in sine curves as seen on EKG plots. Middle C on the piano produces a listenable for “perfect pitch” acoustic sine wave while A Major above middle C, or about 440 Hz, is most often used to tune up an orchestra’s instruments especially oboes with their multiple reed-controlled pitches..

When you examine a sine curve in detail--a teardrop is one such geometric figure-you find another rather amazing shape imbedded in it: the Golden Ratio, or Divine Proportion. These are the proportions you see when you stretch an oval into an ellipse.

It becomes almond-shaped like an Oriental person’s or Abyssinian cat’s eye. Johannes Kepler demonstrated that planets in our Solar System all travel in elliptical orbits, not in circles. That is, their “ovals” have been shaped by the rules of the Golden Ratio. Their diameters change according to a string of ratios conforming to 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc., i.e., the so-called Fibonacci Series (note the progressive, additive pattern). The ratios between these numbers reduces to the irrational number, or “phi,” of: Φ=1.6180339887...an unending series. This proportion is

found everywhere in nature.

Such elliptical orbits have two centers, called foci (see diagram below). A planet revolves about both centers, as our Earth does as it revolves about the Sun in an ellipse.

The Golden Ratio, or Golden Section, turns up in many other places.

For instance, if you divide the total number of female bees by the number of male bees, you get the Golden Ratio, phi, or 1.618 (rounded off). Or, with a tape, you measure the distance from the tip of your head to the floor. Then divide that by the distance from your belly button to the floor. The number you get is 1.618 or something close to it. The Christian crossbar intersects the vertical at precisely .66--2/3rds--of its length (called the “phi cut”).

The Jewish hexagram symbol also embodies this principle.

Too, a spiral engenders the geometry of the Golden Ratio.

This shape is found in conch shells, pineapples, spacing of leaves on a plant, the feathers of birds, and in many parts of the anatomy of humans.

For example, a human foot forms an arch that expresses the Golden Proportion (see illustration).

Getting back to those meandering rivers, the mechanics by which a river settles into its sinusoidal meander are intriguing. At first, the young river flows down its steep gradient as straight as an arrow. Over time, though, it begins to wear down and

level the gradient. As it does so, the current naturally slows down. As this happens, the river begins to curl and “eat itself” like a snake biting its tail. It makes its sine curves steeper and steeper (see picture of meandering river). Finally, when a curving river closes in on itself, a lake, called an ox bow, is formed. In examining this process, geologists have found that over time the river has made its journey rather efficiently from a fastmoving, cascading stream into a ripened, Mississippi-like “old man river.” And it has done this in a most “economical” way by saving as much of itself as possible. As the meandering wears away river banks, silt is deposited in increasing amounts as the river slows down. This in turn increases the meandering. Yet instead of dying altogether, the ancient river flows on and on despite its only slight gradient.

Students of the history of mathematics know that the ancient Greeks took a deep interest in what they observed in nature. Topologically rocky, angular Greece provided a stimulus for studying geometric shapes. By the time of Pythagoras (in the 5th and 6th centuries B.C.), many Greek thinkers were convinced that nature consisted of--that is, could be measured in--numbers, or by geometric shapes. Fascinated by this, Pythagoras developed his famous theorem that the square of the hypotenuse of a right

By the time Galileo and the beginning of the birth of modern science, the famous Renaissance mathematician of Pisa was able to say that nature consists wholly of numbers.

From that concept originated the lengthy process of developing contemporary calculus. This method is not only based on numbers (ratios) but also on imaginary, or “transcendental” (or “irrational”) numbers.

They include pi and e (the magic number of growth and compounded bank interest) which are such strungout constants consisting respectively (as rounded off to several places) of 3.1415926535897...... and 2.7182818284590......with no end to the series. Artist of the Month

|Siesta Key’s Artistic Entrepreneur Martha Smith Martha Smith grew up in a small harbor-front town called Mattapoisett, located near Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on Buzzards Bay. The youngest of five, the siblings all became artists in one medium or another. Like her brothers and one sister, Martha is a musician as well. She attended SMU South Eastern Massachusetts University, now called UMass Dartmouth. She also did a lot of summer sailing, most often on a French-built wooden 56’ boat named the SAUDADE. Sometimes she even raced on an “Evelyn 32” called ZEITGEIST out of Noank, Connecticut.

Martha’s father was an artist and an architect, her mother a photographer and a horticulturist/ tennis player.

Her father built a studio in 1971 at their home. It was 40 feet long by 25 feet wide, and all its windows faced north because— as an artist—her father coveted the north light. She speaks fondly of her Dad. She recalls standing at her father’s knee watching him paint and draw as he taught her about color, light and architecture. “Before I was born, he spent a year sailing and painting his way around the Caribbean, and I grew up surrounded by his paintings of that adventure!” Perhaps that’s the reason Martha gravitates towards painting the warm colors of the tropics, its water views and Caribbean whimsy.

A few years after her father died, Martha took over the studio. She painted furniture and murals for a living, putting her son through Tabor Academy, a well-known prep school in Marion, Massachusetts.

One Christmas, she told her artist friends: “Hey! Let’s clean up the studio. We can do something here for Christmas—soaps, candles, jewelry, burned out velvet scarves.” This “temporary” shop was so successful that it quickly sold out of just about everything. Branches that had been covered with hand-made ornaments were now stripped bare! Artist-friends called other

artist-friends, and the shop was soon restocked. Named SAIL AWAY STUDIO, Martha’s small boutique took on a life of its own.

Before long, Martha came upon an empty storefront in Wareham Mass., two towns away. She rented that storefront, expanded SAIL AWAY, and kept her Dad’s original studio as a production shop. The boutique stayed open for 7 years. During that time she also served as her mother’s caregiver for 12 years.

After her mother passed away, Martha closed SAIL AWAY STUDIO and moved to Sarasota.

One of Martha’s artist-friends was Chris Bales. Martha had been carrying Chris’s jewelry for years in Massachusetts. After Chris moved to the Myaaka area, Martha called her, and Chris told her to check out Siesta Key. “I drove over Siesta Bridge on a perfect blue-sky day with crystal glass green water glinting on the bay. That was it!”

She called a realtor and started looking for a new beginning.

Before long, Martha opened a boutique right on Siesta Key. She named it LE GRAND BISOU (French for “The Big Kiss”.) In addition to clothes and accessories, Martha hung some of her own paintings in that shop, and also carried a few of Lisa Grimes’ Mosaic fish.

Many customers admired the art work, and asked where on Siesta they might see other local art. Martha realized that Siesta Key was missing something— an art gallery featuring the work of local artists.

By now, Martha had made a wonderful group of friends who had become her surrogate family. “I’ve always loved collaborating with other artists, so it seemed a no-brainer to open an art gallery here, a place for locals to show their talents!” Martha moved her boutique a block down the street, and renamed it ISLAND BOUTIQUE. (When you stop in, ask her about the name change—it’s funny!)

A group of artist-friends took over the address at 5129 Ocean Blvd., creating a co-op gallery called THE GALLERY ON SIESTA KEY. Chris Bale’s Jewelry is still featured at this gallery because Chris is a local artist. Today each member of the group takes turns running the gallery and showing their work. Says Martha: “I have high hopes that this will be a fruitful endeavor! It is ever changing and evolving. We are always looking for more talent, especially artists working in ceramics and glass.”

The gallery currently features the work of 11 artists, including Martha Smith, who displays not only her acrylic paintings and furniture, but also a lovely collection of hand-drilled sea glass and pearl jewelry of her own design.(SIESTA SAND will be featuring articles on several of the other co-op artists during the coming months.)

Plans are that THE GALLERY ON SIESTA KEY will host monthly “gallery nights” starting in April. The place is artist-run and operated, and hours are posted on the door, Most days it’s open from 10 -2 or from 3-7. If the doors are closed, you can always call 508-9714410 for an appointment. One of the neighborhood artists would be glad to come down and show you around!

Association Matters, Legally Speaking |Resources

Both members and directors often wonder how they can learn more about the laws and rules that govern condominium and homeowner associations in Florida.

In addition to several “handbooks” on Florida association law which are available for purchase online and in local bookstores, and available in some libraries, information regarding the operation of Florida’s condominiums, and to a much lesser degree homeowner associations, may be obtained directly from the Florida Division of Condominiums, Time Shares, and Mobile Homes website: www. myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/ lsc/condominiums.html For condominiums this website includes free forms and publications, frequently asked questions and answers, and a link to the statutes and

rules governing condominium associations. Under the “frequently asked questions” link, you will find “official” answers to questions regarding records access, management, fines, leasing, elections, recall, the use of proxies, voting rights, budgets, assessments, financial reporting, use of association funds, etc. In addition, this site contains links to the condominium ombudsman and provides contact information for the Division and guidance on how to file a complaint, how to seek an arbitration proceeding to resolve owner/association disputes, and how to seek a “declaratory statement” from “the Division.” The decisions rendered by the Division in arbitrations between an owner and a condominium association are also available through this site and are “searchable.” (But beware that the decision you locate may, or

may not, be relevant to your specific set of circumstances and documents and may have been overruled by a court decision.) While the Division has much more limited jurisdiction over homeowner associations, it can address issues related to elections and recall of directors and, therefore, there is information regarding those issues on the site plus a link to the relevant statutes and rules governing homeowner associations.

As you may recall from an earlier column, each member of the board of a homeowner or condominium association is required to certify in writing to the association secretary, within 90 days of being elected or appointed to the board, that he or she has read all of the governing documents and will work to uphold such documents to the best of his or her ability. Alternatively, the director may submit a

certificate of satisfactory completion of a class offered or approved by the Division.

(See Section 718.112(2) (d) 4.b., Florida Statutes, for more information.) The Division website contains a schedule of (limited) free classes plus a link to other Division approved classes and a sample “certification form.”

As a taxpayer, the Division is there to serve you. You may call the Division with your questions, but note that the person taking your call will not likely be an attorney and will not provide you specific legal advice. They will, however, try to direct you to the relevant portions of the statutes or administrative rules or to other resources that might be helpful.

The Canukus Challenge

Many years ago, Landings resident Barrie Taylor had an idea. He wanted to create a team tennis event similar to the Davis Cup where the players could cheer for their friends and teammates. He designed it with an odd number of matches so there wouldn’t be a tie.

Canada against the United States didn’t seem quite fair so he added the UK to Canada’s side and CANUKUS was born.

The first CANUKUS Challenge took place on February 29th 2004. It has happened every year since then

with the exception of one that got rained out a few years ago.

Since the first match in 2004, the US team is undefeated; however, the final score has been 2-1 every year with at least one year decided by a single tiebreaker.

It is a senior event with players on both teams that have some very impressive resumes. Many of the participants have won national or world championships in their respective age divisions. A few names come to mind: former Landin’ and International

Tennis Hall of Fame member Mike Davies has played many times. Sarasota resident Joe Bachmann and Canadians Lorne Main and Peter Bedard have also been regulars over the years.

Landings resident and USTA official Guy Mileni has kindly donated his time to be the chair umpire since the inception.

There is no charge for Landings Racquet Club members and their guests; however, we do collect nonperishable canned goods for the All Faiths Food Bank each year.
