New Board Member Bios Truman Menefee has been a Landings property owner for twenty years, and a permanent resident for the last eleven years. He was raised on a farming ranch in New Mexico, where his family grew cotton, alfalfa, and grains. In the winter they stocked that land with cattle and sheep. As a country kid, Truman grew up riding horses. He also roped calves, rode bulls, and did bareback bronc riding. He served for two years in the Army, spending most of that time in Germany. After deciding he did not want to do farming, Truman attended Eastern New

Mexico University (ENMU) where he received his B.A. in Math and Education. He taught school for five years, two of those years at University Level in the field of Math. During summer vacations, he worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator in construction. Truman returned to ENMU to earn his Master’s Degree, and then moved to Dallas to start his career in computers. There he met the lovely Sylvie LeGuen, who was selling computers for AT&T. Soon they were married and caught up in raising two children, a boy and a girl. Truman’s 35 year career in

John F. Carson and his wife, Agnes Schipper, moved to Sarasota from Minnesota, and have lived at The Landings since April of 2013. They had hunted up and down the eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida looking for the perfect place to settle. After running a search of cities that rated highest is the arts, they selected Sarasota for its richness of cultural activities. Newly married, John had been retired for six years. Agnes was scheduled to retire at the end of April, 2013, so John came ahead to Sarasota to scout for a place while she remained on staff at the Mayo Clinic as a practicing attorney. As John narrowed his search, he got his first glimpse of The Landings. He knew in an instant it was the right spot, and encouraged Agnes to fly down and check it out. Continued on page 13

computers took him from being a Software Engineer in the Aerospace Industry to becoming an Executive in the Telecom Industry. In 1993, the couple came to Sarasota to visit friends, and fell in love with The Landings. The Villas were still under construction, and they purchased the last one available, thinking of it possibly as a vacation home and/or an investment property. They returned briefly to Dallas, but for the last five years of Truman’s career, they were transferred out to California. Continued on page 10

Robert C. Manteiga moved into The Landings with his wife, Teresa, in June of 2013. They came from Rhode Island, where Robert had taught for 39 years. At the time of his retirement he was Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Studies, Comparative Literature, and Film Media at the University of Rhode Island. He says ironically: “I never liked Florida—I only knew the East Coast.” Still, he and Teresa had come to Sarasota to visit a friend, and fallen in love with the West Coast of Florida. They soon settled in to a Carriage House on Starling, which suited their vision of a great way of life. Besides teaching and photography, Bob now found more time for his hobbies: water sports, cooking, soccer, and sharing a glass of great wine. Continued on page 24

The Landings Day at the Baltimore Orioles vs Red Sox

A Group of nearly 50 Landins went to Ed Smith Stadium to see the Orioles play last year’s pennant winners, the Boston Red Sox. They enjoyed good food at a special pre-game picnic area, good refreshments and plenty of peanuts and Crackerjacks. Good Landings friends, good sunny game day weather. GOOD GRIEF... Abel’s Ice Cream at Village Walk Fundraiser Village Walk of Sarasota, located in Palmer Ranch, held its 3rd Annual Food Fundraiser for the Hope in a Back Pack charity. Bill Abel donated and served Abel’s Ice Cream to the participants. The event was a success again this year according to founder Sharon Lee Leber. Abel’s Ice Cream continues to give back to the Sarasota community by donating their time and premium ice cream for various fundraisers since they opened three years ago this month. Bill and Norma Abel greatly appreciate the Siesta Key, Palmer Ranch, other local area residents and tourist for their support and loyalty as customers. The Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce and other local business neighbors have played a key role in their success, the Abel’s say. Unique flavors such as Elephant Ears (Vanilla ice cream swirled

with peanut butter weave & chocolate chips), Bear Claw (Dark intense chocolate ice cream with thick caramel weave & chocolate covered cashews) and Snickelicious ( Candy bar flavored ice cream with snickers candy bar pieces & thick caramel weave) continue to bring local and tourists back regularly. The Abel’s look forward in continuing to serve their nationally award winning brand of ice cream in the future. They are located between New Balance Shoe and Stonewood Grill at 1886 Stickney Point Road 941-921-5700. Visit their web site for directions, www.abelsicecream.com.

LMA Meeting Notes

|LMA meeting led by newly elected Vice President / Treasurer Don McMurray FINANCE REPORT

Finance committee chair, Don McMurray reported the month of January reflected a $7,500 surplus. Don commented that this is primarily due to the difference in timing of most expenses. He went on to thank Committee Chairmen for their fiscal restraint as they consider expenses for the coming year.

ARCHIVES

Bob Manteiga reported on work undertaken by the new Archives committee. The committee has been tasked with bringing The Landings manual up-to-date. To begin this process Bob made contact with the presidents of each Landings association, as well as the chairman of all the committees, in an effort to get as much information as possible from them about what they do, etc. This is information that would be helpful to new Landings residents regarding what The Landings is all about. Bob noted much of this information is already posted on the website.

The finance committee noted that as of March 6, 23 residents had not paid their yearly assessment. The collection process, which includes fines and eventual legal fees, will be applied equally to all owners. The finance committee’s greatest concern for FY 2014 are the unknown expenses associated DRAINAGE with the Kestral Pkwy, traffic Committee chair, Jack Jost congestion project at the north reported they are still working on entrance. the installation of a new 8” PVC AESTHETICS pipe from the street to the Pintail Aesthetics committee chair, Way creek. The plan is subject to the approval of the Sarasota County Conservation & Environmental Permitting Section of the Natural Resources Department. The LMA has initiated an action plan to comply with the County directives.

GAZEBO

A specially appointed Gazebo Committee has determined the entire gazebo structure should be replaced. General parameters for a new Gazebo were established and the LMA solicited bids to replace the structure. The bids are due back by April 1, 2014.

LAKES

Truman Menefee shared a report from Committee chair Larry Lawrence in his absence. After meeting with county officials, the engineers made a strong commitment to “address future water quality issues in Lake 1.” They are considering the construction of a baffle box to minimize future sedimentation accumulation in the lake. In addition, The LMA and county officials are evaluating ways to trap trash before it reaches the lake.

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping chair, Joe Hennessy reported the removal of many invasive plants along the perimeter of the mangrove preserve adjacent to Eagle Point Circle and behind the Starling Drive Villas. The perimeter of the mangroves along Heron Way was also groomed. The committee obtained an estimate to landscape the entrance to the

Eagles Nest Area- ENA. The estimate included a sprinkler system, and the approximate cost would be $12,000. Hennessy suggested he would get another opinion from a consultant they have used in the past. He also mentioned having enough money in the current budget for this project.

ROADS

Road’s Committee chair, Rudy Blohm submitted a report that contractors are submitting bids to make needed road repairs and to add curbing on the S-curve of Landings Blvd.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Committee Co-Chair, John Carson briefed everyone on the division of responsibilities between himself and Co-Chair Lou Furlong. John Carson will be primarily responsible for The Landings safety issues and Lou the security issues. Safety issues consist of the islands, painting, reflectors and the security issues primarily deal with the gates and the guard services. The committee is working on the following issues: • Reviewing the security contract with Universal that recently expired. • Developing an emergency plan for The Landings. • Compiling a list of contractors who are “first responder” certified as FEMA will only allow those contractors in the development during or after an emergency. • Gate entry decals • The Southgate security camera installation has been completed which has dramatically improved security in that area.

A resident attending the meeting voiced concern about the safety of pedestrians walking and/or biking in The Landings. Lou Furlong responded by asking residents to report any close calls to the main gate. The residents should include as much data as possible including the time of day, location, and color and description of the vehicle. Most of the time the vehicle and owner can be identified through the use of security cameras. Landings resident Bill Whitman recommended residents consider hiring a central watch service for their home security after experiencing a fire at his home in late February. He credited the fire department as well as the central watch security service for preventing his entire home from going up in flames.

TRAFFIC CONGESTION PROJECT UPDATE

Work to eliminate traffic congestion at the intersection of Kestral Parkway North and Tamiami Trail has been in the works since 2011. The original plan proposed by Grimail Crawford on May, 2011 was accepted by the Florida Department of Transportation and the Sarasota County Traffic Department but was rejected by the Landings Shopping Center commercial interests. Subsequently, our consultant, Grimail Crawford, and Publix consultant, Mesimer Associates, have been pursuing alternatives that might be acceptable to all interested parties. They are meeting again to review current issues and all reasonable possibilities.

SHARING OUR ROADS We have had a recurrent issue, or issues, raised concerning the safety of walking on our roads in the Landings. We all want our residents, children, and visitors to be able to walk safely in our community and to be able to enjoy the natural beauty of our surroundings. None of us wants a tragic injury to occur due to neglect, distraction or poor judgment. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful community that was designed to enhance our natural surroundings, resulting in narrow roadways and an abundance of ambient lighting. In order to maximize safety within this design both drivers and walkers need to be vigilant as they travel our roads. Our road restrictions are designed for safety, with smaller, narrow roadways having lower speed limits. However, when drivers ignore these posted limits and exceed the limit they increase the potential danger to others. This is a serious problem! Each

By Don McMurray, Vice President the driver’s eyes, and the driver may not be as alert or awake as they should be. • Don’t be distracted. Chatting on your cell phone or listening to your iPod or other electronic devices will distract you and heighten your potential danger to your neighbor. • Walk your dogs on a short leash. Sorry folks, I know you won’t like this one. However, walking your dog on an extended leash can be problematic. Dogs can bolt into traffic, chase after another dog or go after a bike rider (I know none of your dogs would do any of these things), but the potential is there and we are emphasizing safety in this article. One other comment about dogs/ owners. If you have taught your dog to “heel” or will soon be teaching your dog obedience it is preferable to teach him/her to heel on your left side – away from traffic. Continued on the next page

Letter to the Editor Vehicular manslaughter is an accident I am convinced is waiting to happen in our Landings. The tragedy is even when it does, this may not stop the selfish, careless drivers who speed. A couple years ago someone had a seizure and fell off their bike in the curves on Landings Blvd near the club. The driver who came upon him was doing the 15 MPH speed limit and was able to stop and assist. Many others would have plowed right over him. We have essentially two speed limits here 15MPH and 25MPH. The curves are 15MPH not a speedway to be negotiated on two wheels. It is often frightening to walk on the one sidewalk that we have in the Landings. I spent a number of years

Continued from the previous page

This allows you to keep your body between the approaching vehicle and your dog – good for your dog! On a very positive note: we had a couple of visitors with us for a few weeks. Each is an avid walker, venturing out two to three times a day. They were very impressed with the courtesy drivers exhibited as they were passed. However, they did note that walkers were occupying the wrong side of the road at times and that there were times that a group of walkers would walk abreast rather than in single file. To be safe in our neighborhood and to fully enjoy our surroundings will require everyone to be responsible and to do their part to insure the safety of our neighbor. Let’s commit ourselves to being a little more vigilant, respect our neighbor, and help avoid any potential tragedy from occurring in our community.

volunteering on our security committee. This subject of reckless speeding was always a top priority. We knew we needed to count on each of you to make a difference. Start to finish it takes less than two minutes to get from one end of the Landings to the other. The seconds you think you are saving at another’s expense will never be worth the life of a man, woman, child or dog you may take. I encourage all residents to put a piece of cardboard on their dash with the words SLOW DOWN to remind you this is a special community so incredibly worth your time and attention.

His final place of employment was the historic town of Petaluma, 40 miles north of San Francisco. Did he like it? Why, of course! Of that experience, he says: “I can’t believe I got a company to pay me to live in Sonoma County for five years!” At the end of that delightful era, they headed for The Landings and some tropical sun! Sadly, Sylvie passed away in 2009. Truman kept himself busy performing a multitude of duties aimed at maintaining The Landings as a beautiful and unique environment. He served for six years on the Aesthetics Committee, three years on the Hazardous Waste Committee, and one year each on the Environmental Committee, the Web Site Committee, and the Eagle Editorial Committee. He served as a Host for the Father Son Tennis Team, and also worked as

a kitchen volunteer for LRC social events. As a resident of The Villas at Eagles Point, Truman Menefee served for six years as their President, a post to which he was recently reelected. He also spent one year working on the Landscape Committee and another year on the Roofing Committee.

Racquet Club News |President’s Report By Richard Bayles As the prime season winds down, April will be a busy month at the Club. Landings Day, a tennis and dining experience, will happen on Friday, April 4th. Joe will be dressed for a water bath and there will be the usual court and other hijinks. Also on that weekend, Sunday will bring the annual CANUKUS international tennis event; I encourage everyone to come out to cheer on their favorite players/ countries. The Club has installed a “cardio theater” system in the exercise room at the Fitness Center. This enables users of the cardio equipment to listen to the TV of their choice while the volume on the sets is off. See Kevin’s letter for further information. On Monday, April 7th, the demolition phase of the bathroom

remodeling in the Fitness Center will begin. As noted before, this project is being started earlier than originally planned due to contractor availability and escalating costs as the local construction activity has picked up. The exercise facility and multipurpose room will continue to be usable; however, there may be periodic interruptions required. We will make every effort to give advance notice. The bathrooms will NOT be usable beginning on April 7. We expect the project to be completed by mid-June and the result will be well worth the wait – in addition to upgraded bathroom facilities, there will be new flooring, storage and lighting installed. For those of you who leave in April, have a safe and enjoyable summer and I look forward to seeing you when you return.

Racquet Club News |Manager’s Report By Kevin Lechlitner

In addition to installing an additional 46″ television set in the exercise room, the Club has installed a cardio theater for the Fitness Center cardio equipment. For the Cardio Theater to work perfectly, all the TVs need to be muted. If any set’s volume is up, it will disrupt the receivers. In order to listen to any of the TVs, you will need to bring your own headphones. Any standard set of headphones with a 3.5mm plug will be compatible with the system. There are a few pairs of ear buds for sale in the Pro Shop if you are desperate Now that season is winding down, it is time to start our major capital project for the year. The Fitness Center bathroom renovation is scheduled to begin in April. Both bathrooms will be completely redone as well as the multipurpose

room (the old weight room). All of the fitness equipment will be operational during the renovation; however, the only functional bathroom and shower in the building will be the ADA unisex one. The new line of Wilson demo racquets have arrived. They are all strung and ready for you to try them out. If you fall in love with one, I will special order it from Wilson and it is usually here in three days. There is one of last year’s demos still here, the Steam 99s. That one is for sale to the first person that wants it. I will make you a great deal. Please mark your calendars for our Annual Memorial Day BBQ on May 26th. This is usually the biggest event of the year. Last year we had around 140 people. It will be the normal menu of hot dogs and hamburgers with all the side dishes. As always, wartime military veterans will be complimentary. Look for the sign-up sheet in the tennis Pro Shop in late April.

|News From the Court Friday, March 14th, 2014 was a beautiful day for tennis and a great day to enjoy delicious corned beef and cabbage, red potatoes and, of course, Irish Beer! Thanks to the crew — Deb, Truman, Kevin and Barbara for their help and Sharon and Allison for bringing tasty Irish desserts. No leftovers there! Our final event for the tennis season is Landings Day which will be held Friday, April 4th, 2014. I hope you have signed up — if not, please stop by or call the Pro Shop as soon as possible for all the information. Last year we had to turn some folks away, which I do not like to

was at the premises with six trucks and about ten men. A Sarasota County Deputy and Universal Security Patrol were present as well. The fire started in the front headlight of my car; the car is totaled. As the garage doors were closed, the fire was contained to the garage. However, there is severe smoke damage to the garage and its contents. The house will require cleaning from the ceilings to the floors because of fine ash on everything. At 0130 hours the premises was secured. (My wife presented freshly baked cookies to the fire crew as a “thank you.”) Later that morning calls were made to the homeowners and auto insurers. Actions you might consider: • Have a central alarm service • Have fire extinguishers in strategic locations throughout your residence • Pay attention to your respective Associations rules and regulations - for homeowners, overhead garage doors are to be closed at night.

It all started with an enjoyable Sunday evening with friends, a lovely meal, a glass of wine or two and a beautiful fire in the glass enclosed fire place. Later, at 0030 Monday, February 24th, we were awakened by the sound of our alarm ... loud .... intrusive … engaging! I quickly arose and investigated the entire house (except the garage) and observed no evidence of a fire. Almost immediately we received a phone call indicating that the Fire Department was on its way: I told them to abort the trip as I did not see a fire. Then I called the security service to deactivate the alarm. As they were taking our information, for some reason, though not feeling any heat, I opened the door to the garage and was met by flames about five feet high; I slammed the door shut and handed the phone to my wife saying, “We need the Fire Department!” I rushed to the kitchen to retrieve a fire extinguisher, opened the door to the garage again and emptied the contents of the extinguisher at the base of the flames; the fire appeared to go out and I quickly shut the door. At this point, taking about five minutes, the Sarasota Fire Department

Road Arrows Mark Landings Walking Path By Dee Ricapito Gary Warren resides on Starling Drive and is a retired Physical Education teacher. He feels this walking trail becomes a good motivator for people who want to walk/ run/bike. So, he created a walking trail here in the Landings five years ago. His idea of painting arrows came from looking at the painted bike paths along the roadway. The problem arose with the Florida sunshine, and the paint only lasted a year. In discussing a way to do it permanently, Sara Rhodes reminded him about installing plastic arrows. By the next season, the request was put in to LMA and approved and funded. The project took eight hours, over the course of three days and three men. Gary, along with the help of Truman Menefee and Harold Zimmerman completed the job Gary also spends his free time volunteering many hours at Myakka State Park. This year he will be awarded his 1,000 Hour Badge. He laughed and said, “It

16

took 10 years to get it! The path consists of 19 BROWN Arrows, and 175 GREEN Arrows covering a span of 4.1 miles. Noting all Landings residences are within one block of the established green route. The main GREEN trail starts

at the Racquet Club, or anywhere along its 4.1 length. The BROWN Arrows depict a shorter loop which reduces the total length of the walk to 2.8 miles. (Unless you actually enter the Eagles Nest area. This loop would increase the distance .2 mi.).

Not Just Your Ordinary Book Club By Dee Ricapito

Mary Dooher has been a member of a popular Landings book club for many years; either hosting at her home or attending at various locations. She is a vibrant, active lady with a wonderful cooking family she shares here and in Canada. They say when you need to come up with an idea, “two heads are better than one”. Mary has a twin sister, Pauline Stewart and together they come up with many great ideas. Their latest was a book club luncheon they hosted at Mary’s daughter’s home where they filmed a pilot for a TV show. Mary’s daughter, Donna Dooher, already has a popular show in Toronto called “The Cookworks”; which has also aired in the U.S. The Twins: Mary and Pauline and family, want to establish a show about favorite family recipes to introduce younger people to the fact that the world of older people is vibrant in the world of cooking. They are collecting favorite old family recipes to share with the younger “too busy to cook” generation, so these flavors are not lost to the fast foods generation. The family is hoping to turn this idea into a series, “Cooking with Your Grandmas RECIPIES”. Scott Parson, Director; John Dooher, Producer, Mary’s son, and of course, Donna, the Chef. Those featured in this pilot for the networks are the Book Club ladies some from the Landings: Jan Davis, Liz Schreiber, Sandy Syken, Ute Hargreaves; others include: Golda Friedman, Mary Anne Topercz, Clair Taplin, Janis Leroux, Olive Knubley, and Joan Burnside. The ladies were professionally made up by a MAC make-up artist before the luncheon, and at the end all commented that everything was delicious. Not Just Your Ordinary Luncheon!

April showers fall from my face I sure do hate to leave this place But the time has come to go back to school And leave behind this wonderful jewel From best wishers and friends I depart While a ton of gratefulness flows from my heart Birthday party, biscuits and kisses you threw I could feel daily that love and admiration grew

As I was out and about on my walk Many of you would take time to talk Or on my head simply to pet None of our encounters I will ever forget You helped me transition from puppy to here I was able to grow confident and strong through the year Your generous donations gave me my name Your newspaper helped spread my notoriety and fame The hard work and training I soon will endure Will enable me to enhance someone’s life for sure But memories of these days I will always carry And my fondness for you will never vary You have engendered my future without doubt or fog

Pet Talk

By Dr. Anne Chauvet

1. My beagle girl had three UTIs in the past few months. What could be the cause and how to prevent it? Urinary tract infections are common in dogs. They are often caused by ascending bacteria (bacteria climbing up). The more basic (high pH) the urine is, the more susceptible it is for the bacteria to grow. There are multiple types of bacteria: some can be in the urine itself; other types can get lodged in the wall of the bladder. The reason urinary infection is recurring, could lie in not high enough dose of antibiotic, or too short treatment. It is also possible that the treatment is aimed at the wrong type of bacteria. Another reason for returning infections could be crystals or stones in the bladder and those often are diet related. Some dietary supplements help minimize infection by preventing bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall. Blueberry and cranberry supplements can help. My best advice is to order urine cultures and urine analysis tests, then treat well enough and long enough with correct antibiotic and the support of good dietary supplements. If that does not work, then you may have to get more involved and look for other issues such as congenital malformations of the urinary tract, cancers, etc.

2. What is the difference between X-Ray, MRI and Cat Scan? Excellent question. X-radiation (composed of X-rays) is a form of electromagnetic radiation. The X-ray is an invisible beam that is projected to obtain a radiograph. Radiographs allow us to obtain a two-dimensional view of the body part in black and white varied contrast depending on the tissue density. The more dense the tissue (liver, bone) the brighter it appears on an image. A computed tomography (CT) scan uses X-rays to make detailed pictures of structures inside of the body. It is excellent for generating images of the entire body with more detail for vascular and bone structures. It is very fast and involves, like radiographs, radiation. Movement does not affect CT imaging much. Reconstruction of the images can be very helpful for 3D visualization of the body structure. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to investigate the anatomy and function of the body. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields and radio waves to form images. MRI is particularly great for imaging soft (non-bone) tissue. It is very movement sensitive and generally takes much longer than CT Scan and X-Ray to obtain images. The detail of structures, such as brain and spinal cord is amazing.

Gucci

This is Gucci, a 9 year old Pomeranian from Texas. Nine years ago he was the surprise of his mom’s life when she found him under the Christmas tree at the home of her grandchildren in Texas. It was love at first sight and soon he found his home in The Landings. Gucci enjoys long walks through our beautiful surroundings and visiting with his doggy and people friends, especially when there are treats to be had. Powder Puff and his mom thank our racquet club for their doggy hospitality, a much cherished event which is enjoyed by many pets every day.

I was born with a cleft palate... Some dogs are born with a cleft palate - a deformation in the roof of the mouth resulting in an opening between the nasal passages and the mouth. It is most often a congenital disorder, likely inherited. Symptoms include: coughing, runny nose, difficulty sucking and nursing, slow growth, weight loss, lack of appetite. Surgical repair of the defect is the best treatment, however it is usually postponed until three to four months of age.

...I’m perfect now!

We fix imperfections.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE April 2014

The Grasshopper-El Chapulin brings you Tex-Mex from the Mid-West By Sky Rose This Tex-Mex Restaurant & Lounge traveled from the MidWest to bring you their family tradition of Tex-Mex flavors. A little history here, “The Grasshopper Lounge” opened its doors in 1971 by owners Jesse and Cleo Rosales in the historical 1873 US Armory building of downtown Adrian, Michigan. Thereafter in 1978, the family acquired the other half of the structure and “El Chapulin TexMex Restaurant” was launched. Still in business and operated by the entire family, they have since opened a second location in Wauseon, Ohio. Then in 2013 in beautiful Sarasota, they opened their third location, The Grasshopper-El Chapulin, where Dino Soto’s passion to please his customers shows in every dish. So as you can see, this family is going full speed ahead and isn’t stopping any time soon. Speaking of their family’s traditional Tex-Mex flavors, whether they are starters, appetizers or entrees you’ve ordered, the awesome spices in their dishes will get you off your seat to dance a little Jarabe Tapatio. But first put your Margarita down so not to spill one delicious drop. And know that when you are reading the menu, the owner/chef Dino sees those items he prepares from scratch, like an artist sees a blank canvas...ready to create a work of art. And that includes the wonderful desserts. There are lunch and dinner specials daily. And Dino loves that you may come in regularly for your favorite familiar meal, but then he says, it’s time to take an adventure across his menu. Go on a journey and try something different, and guaranteed, you’ll find your list of favorites growing each week. Yes, this is definitely an enthusiastic environment that says celebrate life. But no need to wait for the weekend. You can start celebrating right at the beginning of your week with their Margarita Mondays, $3.00~ALL DAY. Then you have plenty of time to stay happy with their Fiesta Hour, 4:00-7:00 p.m.

~ Daily. Be sure to include their signature Green Sauce made with yellow queso, jalapeños and green bell peppers, with their homemade guacamole, and tostada chips which are prepared daily with no preservatives. Perhaps even order some to go to have your own Fiesta on our beautiful Siesta Key beach the following day. Everyone deserves a little Fiesta time. It’s easy to enjoy the great bursts of flavor in their authentic dishes with your family and friends, as this restaurant provides the perfect casual atmosphere, along with helpful enthusiastic staff who are truly appreciated by their customers. Just ask DWB who says, “Since I am a native Californian and miss good Mexican food, we have been eating here since it opened. Dino and his crew do a FANTASTIC job of preparing, serving, and making you feel comfortable while there. If you have not given it a try, you’re truly missing something in the way of ethnicity. The pork stuffed rellano, beans and rice are to die for, and the Yeungling beer on tap is cold and smooth.” And Beth has certainly ended her search. She says, “The absolute best there is. We have sampled Mexican food from coast-to-coast and north to south. We’ve never found food so appetizing, fresh and authentic as what is served at The Grasshopper. Nothing beats The Grasshopper...FL, MI and OH.” They make it very clear that this restaurant can be the top choice for your local stopping ground. It’s that friendly type of a place where everyone knows your name. Getting back to celebrating life, “Whether you prefer a classic margarita on the rocks or frozen, it’s the most common tequila based cocktail in the United States today.” Hence, National Margarita Day was born, which is every year on Feb. 22nd. It

was started to “celebrate the margarita, plain and simple. Friendship, good times and memories of somewhere warmer are all great reasons to enjoy a margarita.” However, since you’re in paradise Sarasota where the sun is always shining, no need to think of memories of warmer weather, but to make more of them, at The Grasshopper-El Chapulin. Feel free to bring a group of friends to finish off a Fiesta hour by extending it into the evening with perhaps starting a “Friends are Forever Margarita party”. After all, toasting to life has no curfew. Their hours are: MondayThursday 11:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m., Friday & Saturday 11 a.m.-12 a.m., Sunday: 4:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Their location is: 7253 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL. Be sure to stay updated by liking their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ TheGrasshopperElChapulin. Call for reservations, takeout or catering: (941) 923-3688. Walkins are welcomed. Always know that when you’re on your way over, even if it’s raining, the sun will always be shining when you walk through the doors of The Grasshopper… El Chapulin, that is.

Landings Resident Looming Large By Dee Ricapito LYNN MAYNE has exhibited her artistic talents through weaving tapestry since the seventies -- from her workshop courses in college to the south of France. She has since exhibited her work throughout the U.S. She actively weaves in her home studio in The Landings on Eagles Point and in Michigan in the summer. You will see in the photos below her skills in weaving shapes and colors honed over many years. This season Lynn, along with three other members of the Tapestry Artists of Sarasota; John Nicholson, Becky Stevens, and Terry Stewart, have displayed over 30 of their original handwoven tapestries in St. Petersburg at The Florida Craftsman exhibit titled, “Tapestry Visions X 4.” The themes ranged from the interdependence of wild life and eco systems to extreme weather and home safety, with numerous depictions of everyday events; as well as lyrical abstractions. Each person creates work that gives voice to their concerns, beliefs and joys on life. What a delightful neighbor! If you wish to visit the exhibit they will be showcased from March 14 to May 3. 2014, at The Florida Craftsman, 501 Central Ave, St Petersburg, Fl. 33701

Lynn Mayne’s Statement: Winged Things have been my main focus for the last eight years. The exotic and the ordinary birds and insects around us can be taken for granted. As the human population grows and crowds out more and more species of the animal world, it seems appropriate to single out individual creatures for attention. I delight in nature’s seemingly endless source of artistic inspiration. I’m concerned about the balance of wildlife and ecosystems, and realize how interdependent everything is on our planet earth.

Third Time a Charm for Stickney Point/Midnight Pass Intersection? By Robert Frederickson Recent changes to the rules of the road at the Stickney Point/ Midnight Pass Road intersection demonstrate that if nothing else, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) takes complaints from the public seriously. Hopefully, by the time you read this, the third plan in as many months should be in place to address pedestrian safety issues at the busy intersection. The latest changes will attempt to lessen the severity of traffic backups – sometimes stretching all the way to the mainland – that were exacerbated in recent weeks when signs went up prohibiting turns on red in all instances for westbound traffic approaching the key from the mainland, not just when pedestrians are present, which had been the case previously. The signs restricting the turns went up in mid February in response to complaints about drivers failing to yield the rightof-way under a red signal to pedestrians attempting to cross Midnight Pass or Stickney Point. “Our traffic operations office received complaints about drivers

making the turns even when pedestrians were trying to cross,” said FDOT’s Lauren Hatchell, a public information officer with the agency in a recent phone interview. “Drivers tend to look left to judge the oncoming traffic and forget to look right again for pedestrians before they start turning,” she continued. But the move prompted more complaints – this time from frustrated drivers – as traffic snarls caused by the additional cars now unable to turn off Stickney point during each traffic light cycle stacked up even more traffic on the already overburdened roadway. Cindi Ferdinand works behind the bar at the nearby Captain Curt’s Crab and Oyster Bar and crosses the Stickney Point Bridge most mornings around 10:00 AM prior to the start of her shift at the popular restaurant and bar; as a result she gets a first hand look at the traffic trying to make its way onto the key each day. “If it’s a nice day like we usually get this time of year, the traffic gets really bad. I’ve seen it blocking traffic

Local Fishing Report By Captain Jim Klopfer Adventure Charters 941-371-1390 Mother Nature has been right on schedule thus far in 2014. Regular cold fronts have kept the water temperature in the mid 60s, which is just right for this time of year. April should offer incredible fishing for a variety of species. Big Pass and New Pass will be alive with fish migrating in and out of the bay this month. Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, and ladyfish should be plentiful. Pompano prefer a small white or chartreuse jig bounced along the bottom while the mackerel are often found higher in the water column or breaking on the surface. There is nothing more exciting than casting a surface plug on light tackle or a fly into a feeding frenzy! Action on the deep flats will be very good for speckled trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and ladyfish. The best flats to fish will be from Siesta Drive north to Long Bar. Flats that are near both passes will be especially productive. A ¼ ounce jig in gold, olive, or rootbeer is a great lure to prospect with; a lot of water can be covered and just about every species will hit it. Continued on page 27

all the way back on Tamiami a couple of times in the last few weeks” she said one afternoon recently. “It gets bad after lunch too,” around 1:00 or 2:00,” she continued, “...when the local kids start heading over.” How many complaints did FDOT receive, first from pedestrians and then later from drivers after the initial change? Hatchell couldn’t say for sure, but did say that the department takes even a single complaint seriously. “The field office will send someone out to investigate a complaint. In the first case they could see a problem. The thought was that adding the sign (prohibiting all turns on red) would work in that location,” she said. Wrong. Soon after the new signs went up the complaints started rolling in from drivers; so FDOT sent workers out again to monitor the impact of the February change and noted the new problem of even longer delays for traffic trying to get onto the key and increased instances of vehicles backing up toward the mainland.

“Their (FDOT’s) major priority is to keep traffic moving on the major arteries, like US 41” noted Chief Sarasota County Engineer James Harriott Jr. in a recent phone interview. “When you get back ups onto Tamiami or US-301, they usually react pretty quickly.” That was the case here. The new plan (which was not yet in place as we went to press) will replace the static, printed sign that reads “No Turn on Red” with an electronic one above the intersection that responds to data from the crosswalk control devices at each corner. “When pedestrians are attempting to cross, the sign will display the ‘No Turn on Red’ message,” said Hatchell. “But when there are no pedestrians present, the sign will display a message that drivers can turn on red.” The electronic signs are fairly new to this area. When asked where else in the county they have been placed, Harriott had to think for a moment before finally pointing to the exit ramp of I-75 that merges onto Fruitville Road westbound. Sure enough, the signs in that location were

working as advertised on a recent ride through that intersection. The King Solomon like decision of splitting the difference... some turns on red instead of the previous two alternatives of always or never – might still represent a net increase of traffic on Stickney Point over what was in place prior to the February change, but it should reduce traffic somewhat over the most recent outright prohibition of all turns. But stay tuned. If problems persist and more complaints come to FDOT’s attention, we’re likely to see more changes down the road. But it’s important to note that as county engineer Harriott points out, more than 20,000 vehicles on average use the stretch of Stickney Point Road between US 41 and Midnight Pass Road on a daily basis. And all that traffic is being funneled from a major thoroughfare to a two lane road, “It’s a real balancing act trying to get things right...” he said One requiring the Wisdom of Solomon for traffic engineers. And the patience of Job for drivers.

|3D Pilates in Motion Achieve a Strong, Supple, Resilient Body with Fascial Fitness. You want to have a supple, fluid, resilient body that moves with ease. It will require a change of thought. And to fear change is to be human. Unleash the Potent Force of Kaizen Kaizen is a Japanese word representing the process of achieving sustained success through small steady steps. Kaizen has become a proven driver for human development. Sometimes all it takes is one tiny step to propel you with momentum on a path of continuous development. But you have to take that first step. What is Fascia and Why is it Important? Have you ever noticed a recurrent spasm? You might assume the problem is a muscle or bone. But neither one is the problem. The problem is that the connective tissue (fascia) has been loaded beyond its present capacity. Fascia forms a continuous network throughout the body and is often referred to as the “organ of form.” Think of fascia as “One large body stocking with hundreds of bags, pockets and slings.” (Schliep 2012)

Bounce Stretches? You’ve heard it – we’ve all heard it, NEVER BOUNCE A STRETCH. Research on fascia tells us that utilizing a soft elastic bounce in the end ranges in which the muscle is both activated and extended promises a more comprehensive stimulation of fascial tissues than either weight training or traditional yoga stretches. ZENGA™ Mindful Movement ZENGA™ is fascial fitness as developed by Merrithew Health and Fitness (the developers of STOTT PILATES® ) is a synthesis of movement applications – like functional exercise, pilates & yoga – that integrates the current research on fascia into these types of movements. Landings resident, Martha David along with Shannon Willits of 3D Pilates in Motion are offering ZENGA GROOVE, a 90 minute master class that is a true fusion of dance, breathwork, STOTT PILATES and yoga, designed to improve the fascial system, strengthen the core and give a cardio workout, all in one class. Local Fishing Report By Captain Jim Klopfer: Adventure Charters 941-371-1390 Continued from page 24

Rapala X-Raps work very well when surface activity is seen, they also are a great lure to troll slowly and locate schools of fish. Silver and gold spoons are another good choice. Live bait works very well, too. There should be plenty of whitebait to net up and of course a live shrimp free lined or fished under a noisy float is a deadly technique. The area between Siesta Drive and Blackburn Point will be good for snook as they migrate out towards the beach to spawn. Any point, oyster bar, dock, or creek mouth that drops off into deeper water is a likely spot to try. High, outgoing tides are best. Plugs cover a lot of water and result in vicious strikes while jigs require more patience but will fool more redfish along with snook. Don’t be surprised when a big jack crevelle or trout inhales an offering meant for a snook or red.

This has been a good season for sheepshead and while it is past its peak there should still be plenty of these tasty saltwater panfish around. Docks, seawalls, and bridges near passes will hold sheepies. A live shrimp fished on the bottom will fool them, along with snapper, grouper, and flounder. Surf fishing should be very good for Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, flounder, pompano, and more. Live or frozen shrimp fished near the bottom with a little weight works well. Spoons, plugs, and jigs will also catch plenty of fish. April is a great month for anglers with a small boat and not a lot of experience to catch big fish. The beaches and inshore artificial reefs will be thick with king and Spanish mackerel, along with false albacore and the occasional cobia. Trolling spoons is very easy and deadly on all species.

We will be serving edible gold and silver from “Cornuc Aupia Gold Leaf Manufacturing, Inc.” with dessert and the last glass of wine. The wine tasting includes four meal courses, four glasses of wine, and live music from South America.
