New Board Member Bios Truman Menefee has been a Landings property owner for twenty years, and a permanent resident for the last eleven years. He was raised on a farming ranch in New Mexico, where his family grew cotton, alfalfa, and grains. In the winter they stocked that land with cattle and sheep. As a country kid, Truman grew up riding horses. He also roped calves, rode bulls, and did bareback bronc riding. He served for two years in the Army, spending most of that time in Germany. After deciding he did not want to do farming, Truman attended Eastern New
Mexico University (ENMU) where he received his B.A. in Math and Education. He taught school for five years, two of those years at University Level in the field of Math. During summer vacations, he worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator in construction. Truman returned to ENMU to earn his Master’s Degree, and then moved to Dallas to start his career in computers. There he met the lovely Sylvie LeGuen, who was selling computers for AT&T. Soon they were married and caught up in raising two children, a boy and a girl. Truman’s 35 year career in
John F. Carson and his wife, Agnes Schipper, moved to Sarasota from Minnesota, and have lived at The Landings since April of 2013. They had hunted up and down the eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida looking for the perfect place to settle. After running a search of cities that rated highest is the arts, they selected Sarasota for its richness of cultural activities. Newly married, John had been retired for six years. Agnes was scheduled to retire at the end of April, 2013, so John came ahead to Sarasota to scout for a place while she remained on staff at the Mayo Clinic as a practicing attorney. As John narrowed his search, he got his first glimpse of The Landings. He knew in an instant it was the right spot, and encouraged Agnes to fly down and check it out. Continued on page 13

computers took him from being a Software Engineer in the Aerospace Industry to becoming an Executive in the Telecom Industry. In 1993, the couple came to Sarasota to visit friends, and fell in love with The Landings. The Villas were still under construction, and they purchased the last one available, thinking of it possibly as a vacation home and/or an investment property. They returned briefly to Dallas, but for the last five years of Truman’s career, they were transferred out to California. Continued on page 10
Robert C. Manteiga moved into The Landings with his wife, Teresa, in June of 2013. They came from Rhode Island, where Robert had taught for 39 years. At the time of his retirement he was Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Studies, Comparative Literature, and Film Media at the University of Rhode Island. He says ironically: “I never liked Florida—I only knew the East Coast.” Still, he and Teresa had come to Sarasota to visit a friend, and fallen in love with the West Coast of Florida. They soon settled in to a Carriage House on Starling, which suited their vision of a great way of life. Besides teaching and photography, Bob now found more time for his hobbies: water sports, cooking, soccer, and sharing a glass of great wine. Continued on page 24
The Landings Day at the Baltimore Orioles vs Red Sox
A Group of nearly 50 Landins went to Ed Smith Stadium to see the Orioles play last year’s pennant winners, the Boston Red Sox. They enjoyed good food at a special pre-game picnic area, good refreshments and plenty of peanuts and Crackerjacks. Good Landings friends, good sunny game day weather. GOOD GRIEF... Abel’s Ice Cream at Village Walk Fundraiser Village Walk of Sarasota, located in Palmer Ranch, held its 3rd Annual Food Fundraiser for the Hope in a Back Pack charity. Bill Abel donated and served Abel’s Ice Cream to the participants. The event was a success again this year according to founder Sharon Lee Leber. Abel’s Ice Cream continues to give back to the Sarasota community by donating their time and premium ice cream for various fundraisers since they opened three years ago this month. Bill and Norma Abel greatly appreciate the Siesta Key, Palmer Ranch, other local area residents and tourist for their support and loyalty as customers. The Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce and other local business neighbors have played a key role in their success, the Abel’s say. Unique flavors such as Elephant Ears (Vanilla ice cream swirled
with peanut butter weave & chocolate chips), Bear Claw (Dark intense chocolate ice cream with thick caramel weave & chocolate covered cashews) and Snickelicious ( Candy bar flavored ice cream with snickers candy bar pieces & thick caramel weave) continue to bring local and tourists back regularly. The Abel’s look forward in continuing to serve their nationally award winning brand of ice cream in the future. They are located between New Balance Shoe and Stonewood Grill at 1886 Stickney Point Road 941-921-5700. Visit their web site for directions, www.abelsicecream.com.
