Joan Lowery By Diana Colson A Passion for Communication A thread flows between Joan Lowery’s career and her lifetime pursuit of learning, social activism and communication. This thread links acting, talk show hosting, reporting, writing, and—more recently—teaching and coaching physicians and executives in the art of communication. Raised in NYC, from ages 3-8 Joan danced with “The Youngest Ballet Troupe in the World” on Children’s Hour on NBC. By the time she graduated from high school, her tutu was gathering dust. She attended The Fashion Institute of Technology and briefly considered a career as Fashion Coordinator. Joan found herself drawn to a more serious world. It was the era of Vietnam and Civil Rights. At the age of 18, she joined the summer program of Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), where she worked with an Ojibwa tribe in Northern Minnesota. This experience whetted her appetite for social action. The following year, after Martin Luther King’s assassination, she signed up for an Ethical Culture Society community service project in Shorter, Alabama where she lived and worked with teachers from a rural Black farming community to set up a summer school for kids. Joan now opted to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a major in theater. There, a British professor by the name of A. C. Scott

opened her eyes to Asian Theater techniques and styles, an experience which was to color her life. Drawn to enter the field of socially conscious political theater, Dr. Scott’s influence led Joan to England, which was considered to have the best drama schools preparing for the stage. Joan spent her first year abroad acting in lunch time, pub-based theater in London, as well as performing around the country with Triple Action Shakespearian Theater, one of the better known fringe theater companies. During her second year of study in London Joan read about the genre of Children’s Participational Theater. After graduation, she moved to Boston, where she joined Theater Workshop Boston (TWB) acting and teaching company, a leader in integrating theater in education with performance. At that time grants were given for

bringing original theater into that city’s segregated schools to facilitate academic learning and crosscultural appreciation. Joan worked directly with kids and also trained teachers in workshops lasting 8-12 weeks. Organizational Psychologist Dr. George Litwin, the Father of Organizational Climate, was impressed by Theater Workshop Boston’s groundbreaking work. Dr. Litwin’s expertise involved analyzing the management “climate” of a particular company, establishing which skills were needed to be effective within that climate, then training employees to maximize those particular sets of skills. As an experiment, Litwin brought Joan and other members of Theater Workshop Boston to NYC where they worked with Ivy-League types at Citibank. Their system of using theater to improve communication skills met with grand success, even among these welleducated groups. “I love this!” thought Joan. She continued working with Dr. Litwin as a consultant and entered graduate school at Antioch in Cambridge, MA, earning a Master’s Degree in Adult Education and Counseling. After graduate school she worked full-time with Litwin, who encouraged her to use her background as an actress to help corporate managers learn new ways of communicating.

President’s Column We have successfully completed half of this fiscal year, with our budget fully intact and showing a small surplus. The title “No. 1 beach in the United States” carries with it a heavy responsibility. Nearly 3 million visitors from all over the globe come to the half-mile Gulf coast shoreline called Siesta Beach annually. One person is tasked with coordinating staff and volunteers to see that those visitors have a safe, fun and seamless experience. Jonathan Poyner, a 44-year-old Virginia Beach transplant is the man challenged to achieve that goal. Amazingly, he does it with great passion, humility, sense of humor and purpose. A Recreation Specialist for the last 10 years, six on Siesta Beach, Poyner feels as though he’s in stress management. He works to provide a beautiful, welcoming, accessible park for people and helps administer great programs, events and activities. The way he sees it, “It’s getting people to unplug from their daily pressures of life and connecting people both to nature and to other people.”

Siesta beach is undoubtedly the most famous half mile of Gulf of Mexico coastline in the country. Maintaining this resource and the level of service that the community expects is a huge challenge. The sheer volume of people that pass through Siesta beach is incredible. “It’s like trying to sweep off your front porch as people continue to walk by. Access to the beautiful coastline is everyone’s right and we want

everyone to be happy and have parking and clean restrooms and a safe park to come to.” Siesta beach is only 100 acres of the 55,000 acres Sarasota County maintains in about 160 parks. Staff at Siesta Beach consists of lifeguards, a sheriff’s office substation, maintenance personnel, programming, a contracted concessions staff and volunteers. Continued on the next page

They all work together to provide the best experience possible for anyone who visits here and wants to come back. Poyner shared his high regard for the 40 volunteers of the Beach Ambassador program. In 11 years, they have accumulated 22,000 volunteer hours. “It’s a real joy to see people give back to the community,” he said. “It has great value because those volunteers sit on the front porch of this great destination. They provide the first impression many people get when they come here for the first time. Seven days a week they prop up the staff and provide the shine of the park.” One aspect of Poyner’s job is to provide about 600 permits per year for both public and private events. There are a lot of weddings on Siesta beach. The beach is also host of between 40 and 50 special events each year which includes everything from yoga classes to professional and amateur volleyball tournaments,

triathlons, lifeguard training and competitions and much more. Learning to balance the public use with bringing more people to the beach with special events is always interesting. Generally there’s a moratorium on special events from February 15 to April 15. “No way could we bring more people to the mix during that period.” Every event brings with it huge safety concerns, huge environmental concerns, and huge maintenance concerns. Sunsets on Siesta beach are spectacular. Poyner recommends that people come to the beach early. Once here, it’s easy to spend the entire day. There are plenty of conveniences here including outstanding beverage and food choices as well as lounge chair, umbrella rentals and other concessions. He recommends walking at least part of the beautiful 6 mile long coastline of Siesta Key and at this time of the year the water is gorgeous;

get in. The initial conversations regarding the renovations at Siesta beach likely began almost 10 years ago. The buildings and facilities are nearly 50 years old. Poyner loves what’s going on there. He really appreciates the great patience the general public has shown with all the construction taking place. Though the exact completion date is fluid, renovations are expected to be finished sometime in early 2016. Each day at the beach brings its own unique experience. Poyner related that one day someone brought up a big blue duffel/back pack type bag to the lost and found. He went through it, found some identification and made contact with the person. The man asked if his computer was still in there. Poyner asked, “You left a bag with a computer in it here on the beach?” He said it was in a plastic bag. He went through the rest of the blue bag and sure enough, the computer was still there. A couple days

later he came and picked up the bag. Two days later one of the metal detector guys showed up at Poyner’s office. He said he had located something with his metal detector maybe a couple of feet below the sand and asked to speak to a sheriff. “Don’t you know, he pulled out that same blue backpack with the same computer in it 2-3 feet under the sand.” Poyner thought, “What is going on here. I just gave this guy back his bag a couple days ago. Turns out, if you’re like a rambler, you don’t want to carry a bag like that around all day. So what he would do is bury it like 3 feet down, walk around all day and then come back at night and dig it up. In the meantime, a guy with a metal detector found it, dug it up and brought it up here. When the guy came back I told him he had to stop burying his bag in the county park.” Before working in the recreation field Poyner earned a BA in Religion from Mid Atlantic Christian University in

North Carolina. He was trained as a minister and worked as a recruiter for a Christian college. His background was a great match because being a recreational specialist is about serving the community and connecting people. He passionately believes recreation is one of the greatest things out there and hopes a lot more people come into the industry. Poyner’s wife is an American Sign Language teacher at Bayshore High School. Thirteen years ago, when hundreds of people were moving to Florida every day, they packed up a U-Haul, two young children, came down for an interview and she got the job. Poyner said, “That’s how much the economy was growing at the time. You could just come down and find something.” His son Nate just graduated from Lakewood Ranch High School and his daughter Kiona is studying to be a schoolteacher at Warner College in Lake Wales. The Family Swim Night and Pizza Party was a big success. It was held Friday, July 3rd from 4:30 7:00 PM. Roughly 50 community residents attended the event. Thank you to Doug and Veronica Day from the LMA Social Events Committee for putting everything together. Thank you to Landings resident Cindy Klein for setting up the pool games for the kids and staff member Gary Bowen for serving as lifeguard. There was plenty of pizza & drinks; however, the hit of the night had to be the special appearance by the ice cream truck. Thankfully the rain didn’t arrive until after the ice cream truck. Overall, it was a great event. Fall is right around the corner. For the 23rd year in a row, The Landings will host the USTA National Senior and Super-Senior Father / Son Clay Court Championships from November 18th 22nd. If you are interested in taking part as a host family please contact Ralph &

Dee Ricapito at 927-6261. They did a fantastic job organizing the host families last year and have volunteered to do it once again. If you have any questions about being a host, feel free to call me at the Club or call Ralph and Dee directly at 927-6261. The tennis court fence project is nearly completed. All the fences are up. We are just waiting for the windscreens to arrive for courts 5 - 8. They should all be finished by the time you are reading this. Beginning in August, we will start the annual court resurfacing. Two courts at a time will be offline until all eight are pristine again. Weather permitting, this project should be completed by the end of September. That gives us a cushion of about two weeks before the start of the Tri Cities tennis leagues. Be sure to mark your calendars for the Annual Labor Day BBQ on Monday, September 7th from 4:30 – 6:30 PM. County gets ready with post storm plan For Rachel Herman, environmental planning manager with Sarasota County, the best time to talk about and prepare for a big storm is when blue skies are overhead. Sarasota County Commissioners did just that last month when they approved the county’s framework for rebuilding after a major storm event. The 116page framework, called the Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan (PDRP), took years to draft and outlines a strategy for the long-term redevelopment after an event such as a hurricane. The plan is one of six pilot plans as part of a state program initiated in 2008. For Herman, drafting, approving, and updating a PDRP is a healthy step for the community, although it’s not one required of counties by the state or federal government. “We haven’t had a big storm in many years here, and for many folks it may not be in the forefront of their minds,” Herman said. “The PDRP is a

way to have some of those really tricky conversations on big issues in a blue sky scenario.” The PDRP is not the immediate post-disaster management plan, but more of a recovery plan for how the county will address clean-up and redevelopment. The plan highlights strategies and goals for the post-storm work that typically begins six months after an event, according to a memo sent to county commissioners. “With a large-scale disaster, redevelopment will extend beyond the initial disaster response,” reads the memo from Herman and Thomas Polk, Director of the county’s Planning and Development Services. “Redevelopment may still be occurring years after the event depending on the scale and the nature of the damage. This longer term (6-months post-disaster) and beyond is the concentration of the PDRP.” The plan is divided into four major sections: Housing and Planning; Infrastructure, Public

Facilities, and Public Safety; Economic Redevelopment; Environmental Restoration. Within each section, the plan includes strategies and approaches—such as a call for a review of damaged public safety facilities that might better serve the public if they are permanently moved to a lessvulnerable location. The plan also includes strategies that might help during storm clean-up—such as securing a number of vacant sites so construction and storm debris can be stored before it is sent out of the county. But there is more work to be done, Herman told Siesta Sand. For example, action items—such as choosing specific debris storage sites—requires further implementation. The plan also lists existing resources such as a state list of funding sources for both pre- and post-storm. County staffers plan to check back in with county commissioners in six months with an update on some of the

action items within the plan.

Two important documents and one left out

The plan does include two important documents. The first of those is a checklist designed to help homeowners understand what documents and records they need to have on hand to streamline the process of rebuilding and applying for necessary permits. Secondly, a flowchart specifies what application processes homeowners have to follow. “The checklist and flowchart will be of interest to residents on Siesta,” Herman said. The PDRP along with the checklist and flowchart are accessible online at https:// www.scgov.net/PDRP/ Herman says county officials worked closely with the Barrier Island League (BIL), which included Catherine Luckner, former president of the Siesta Key Association who served as

a representative of Siesta Key on the BIL. “We had lots of meetings with the Barrier Island League,” Herman said. ‘We had some meetings here in the [county] offices, and we came to them. They were very engaged with it from the beginning.” “BIL wanted to know does the PDRP change any regulations that are in place in regard to rebuilding,” Herman said. “To be clear, it does not change any regulations. Any rebuilding would be subject to the rules in place now.” Herman explained: “The PDRP is a planning tool, rather than a regulatory document.” Although the plan does include the checklist and flowchart, for Luckner, the plan is missing one important document that original BIL members advocated for. A drafted matrix would have given “homeowners a sense of certainty” by showing how they could rebuild on their property. Continued on page 27

South Siesta Renourishment set for January, 2016 start

After rising project costs and an unexpected permit delay, Sarasota County is finally moving towards a January 2016 construction start date for the long-planned Turtle Beach renourishment. That’s because some recent good news out of Tallahassee and progress with a federal environmental permit application will ensure the county can complete the project, Laird Wreford, Sarasota County Coastal Resources Manager, told Siesta Sand. The cost of the South Siesta Renourishment Project— which will buffer two miles of beach including Turtle Beach—has been rising, from $19.8 million just a year ago to a current price estimate of close to $22 million. That’s almost twice as much as initial project estimates of $11.5 million. The rising cost of mobilizing a giant ocean-going dredge vessel is a major contributor for the “skyrocketing” cost of

beach nourishments, Wreford said. But county officials say a $2.75 million state award approved by the legislature in June will provide the financial boost needed to move ahead with the South Siesta project. For some time, it appeared that the project might not get any funding from the state. Back in April, at the Siesta Key Association meeting, where County Commissioner Hines was the guest speaker, the commissioner said this regarding Turtle Beach’s renourishment; “If we don’t get state money this year, Turtle Beach probably won’t happen.” “We are happy about it,” Wreford said about the state award, “that it was more than zero.” Following a tumultuous regular legislative session, state legislators wrapped up the budget session in June, in the process setting aside almost $8 million for beach

renourishment efforts on Venice, Siesta Key, Longboat Key, and Anna Maria Island. But the award earmarked for South Siesta project—which, if completed, will widen the Turtle Beach public park and areas directly to the north and south—was of note. It was the largest state award for local beach projects. The county, however, originally requested $7 million in state funding, and it is still seeking another $4.25 million from the state. “We will be back with a follow up request in the subsequent year or years,” Wreford said. But Wreford said the $2.75 million-award is enough for the county to move ahead with the project’s January 2016 start date. The coastal resources manager is hopeful that a request for follow-up funding is more likely to be fulfilled now that the state has made an initial investment in the project. Permit progress Another crucial element of the beach project is securing a federal permit—a process that was delayed in spring because of the potential presence of a recently-listed shorebird during its annual migration. In March, county officials let

residents know the scheduled start date for the project had been delayed, because of the potential presence of the Rufa Red Knot, a threatened species protected by the Endangered Species Act in 2014. The potential stopover of the Red Knot during migration delayed the permitting process, and since spring the county has been working to put specific safeguards in place to protect the Red Knot and Loggerhead sea turtles.

“The Red Knot is not very common in our area but it can potentially use our gulf shoreline during its trip,” Wreford said. Similar beach renourishment projects elsewhere in Florida also faced temporary delays because of the federal permitting process. “If a nesting pair [of Red Knots] were documented, there are things we have to do,” Wreford said.

That’s important because the closer the county gets to securing the $7-million amount, the less Tourist Development Tax dollars it will have to spend on the project. “The state funding [of $2.75 million] is certainly a significant help. If we failed to get any state funding, we would be able to do the project, but that would really cut into TDT funding,” Wreford said. “That would have limited the county’s ability to do more projects and additional South Siesta renourishments.” In addition to the state money, funding options include: Tourist Development Tax, Municipal Services Benefit Unit (MSBU), and commercial borrow.

Fourth Annual Camp for Champions

On July 7, Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar hosted/donated a private party luncheon for the Camp for Champions. In its fourth year, the Camp for Champions is a camp for children in foster care. Each summer, 40 youth participate in a rang e of activities that are donated by local business and community members. The age group this year was 13 to 17. The camp fosters teamwork, healthy living and fun and allows the children to be children during a challenging time in their lives. Camp for Champions started as a Department of Children and Families Initiative four years ago. With budget restrictions, the camp was at-risk of ending. The staff at the Sarasota YMCA-Safe Children Coalition has made it a priority to have a safe place for the foster children to experience new things and be part of a summer camp program. I know that the words “farm-raised” is an automatic turn off for many fish eaters but many don’t know the difference between farm-raised and organically farm-raised so let me explain. Farm-raised, although a healthy way to raise fish for the environment, is considered by many (including myself)

as an inhumane process of raising fish for food because of the small containers that the fish are grown in and the unhealthy chemicals used for feeding and artificial flesh coloring. Organically farm-raised Salmon is a totally different process. Irish Organic Salmon is produced with the following principles: The fish swim freely in the pristine Irish waters in large nets in the North Atlantic Ocean off the Coast of Clare Island. These nets are many miles wide in deep waters allowing the fish to swim and eat from the wild. There is no use of Genetically Modified Organisms in the product, feed or processing aids, either directly or indirectly. Also there are no chemical color enhancements. Local Fishing Report There is a little secret here on Siesta Key; the fishing is terrific in August! Many anglers assume that the heat slows down the action, but this is far from true. The reality is that due to daily rain showers, the water temperature is actually lower in August than it is in June. Hordes of bait fish cover the flats. This combination results in excellent conditions for anglers to succeed. The best action will be early morning, late afternoon, and at night. Snook love the infusion of fresh water into the bay. Snook migrate back into the bays after spawning out on the beach in August. Shallow diving plugs such as the Rapala X-Rap are very effective baits. They cover a lot of water and produce explosive strikes. Scented soft plastics also work well. Live shrimp, pinfish, and pilchards will also catch a lot of snook, particularly once the fish are located. Outgoing tides at first light and in the evening are the best times to fish.

Redfish will begin to school up in large numbers in August. The bars south of Siesta Drive are worth a try. Weedless gold spoons and scented soft plastic baits on a 1/8 ounce jig head are proven baits. Hand-picked shrimp cast into pot holes is a deadly technique, too. Low, incoming tides are best. The deep grass flats on the north end of Siesta Key will be good spots to target speckled trout. High tides in the morning will produce plenty of fish. Spanish mackerel, pompano, bluefish, ladyfish, jack crevelle, sharks, small gag grouper, and mangrove snapper will also be caught by anglers drifting the deep grass. A live shrimp under a popping cork works very well. A jig with a grub tail is the preferred artificial bait but plugs and spoons are also effective. The bars from CB’s Saltwater Outfitters at Stickney Pt. south to Blackburn Pt. will hold some very nice trout along with a few redfish. This area does not get a lot of pressure in the

summertime. This is an early morning bite and a high tide is preferred. In the last several years mangrove snapper fishing has been outstanding! Grass flats that drop off into deep water with some current flow should produce plenty of nice snapper this month. Live bait works best and baitfish will usually catch larger fish than shrimp. A 1/0 live bait hook tied on a 24” piece of 20 pound flourocarbon leader with just enough split shot to get to the bottom is the simple but effective rig. Surf casters should have opportunities for snook, the beach fishing for snook this year has been outstanding. Small artificial lures such as white jigs and small plugs work well, while live shrimp and baitfish will score more consistently. Other species such as Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, drum, trout, pompano, and flounder will be taken as well. The best conditions are an east wind and incoming tide.

As of Tuesday July 7, DebraLynn Schmitz, the Executive Director of the Siesta Key Chamber is no longer employed at the Chamber. Schmitz was hired in March 2014 when the position was vacated by Kevin Cooper as he accepted a position with the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce. Schmitz was the manager for the Medina Chamber of Commerce in rural Ohio for 25 years before applying for the open position. The Board of Directors will start the search for a new Executive Director.

Unfortunately the parking for the event was a bit challenging with the ongoing work being done on the Siesta Key Beach Improvements Project, but everyone took it all in stride.

Members of the Siesta Key Association and other community volunteers, along with county workers, spent the morning of July 5 cleaning the parking lot, picnic areas and the beach at Siesta Public Beach. The litter they picked up included remnants from illegal fireworks launched from the beach. “The rogue fireworks were not connected with the Siesta Key Fourth of July Fireworks display, organized by the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce”, says Michael Shay, president of the

Siesta Key Association (SKA). “The illegal fireworks are a problem every year,” Shay acknowledged. “Roman candles and rockets were left in the sand, along with heaps of garbage that some eventgoers opted not to throw in nearby trash cans,” Shay said. “As the beach gets more and more crowded, the problem is going to get worse,” Shay said. Twenty six, 20# bags of garbage was collected.

Midnight Pass Road Roundabout update

The Florida Department of Transportation has yet to reach a decision regarding the potential change to the intersection of Midnight Pass Road and Beach Road. The intersection was deemed a dangerous intersection in regards to safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. FDOT has three options, do nothing, add a turn lane heading north on Midnight Pass Road or change the intersection to a roundabout. The cost to convert the intersection to a roundabout is 2 million dollars.

Mysterious Ex-Planet: Pluto Closeup By Albert L. Weeks Much is written in the press these days about the (former) Solar System planet, Pluto. Now swinging in an orbit beyond the last of that system’s offspring, Neptune, far from the Sun, the once ninth member of our system now attracts not only media attention but that of professional astronomers. The once mnemonic catchphrase for the planets, “Mary’s Violet Eyes Make John Sit Up Nights Pining”-- P as in Pluto--may no longer hold. But Pluto has not lost his importance. Recall Pluto’s history. Ironically over the years, ongoing chapters of news about this distant planet have run parallel with that of generations of astronomy buffs. The oldest folks among us remember the planet’s initial discovery some 80 years ago. More recent generations recall Pluto’s demotion to the status of mere Kuiper Belt object. Today, astro fans as well as professionals are excited by this summer’s upcoming, New Horizons NASA spacecraft’s Pluto flyby. So, what’s with this strange outer space occupant with the nether world’s name? Yes, some people identify it with Hades. Yet its name seems to have been partly inspired by the cartoon dog of the same name. Interest in Pluto persists for a number of reasons. This, despite the fact that few of us amateurs have telescopes powerful enough to make out much of this mysterious object that is only 1/6th the size of Planet Earth and smaller than our Moon. To the naked eye, Pluto, when it rarely comes into view because of its wide orbit, looks like a very dim star, far fainter than any visible star, say, in the Big Dipper. It turns out that Pluto is becoming by far the strangest original member of our unique family of Sun-born planets. Its colors go through mysterious changes in brightness and reddish tones that at times resemble those of Mars. Its hemispheres display certain odd characteristics, perhaps

because of volcanic eruptions. It may, in fact, be undergoing dynamic geological changes. Was it, by the way, one of the first bodies to spin off the Sun? If so, that makes its composition of great interest. Pluto appears to be a very dusty or smoky place. Yet it may have water ice on parts of its frigid surface. By “water,” is not meant necessarily our form of potable H2O. Moreover, Pluto’s multitude of “dancing moons” are extremely intriguing to astrophysicists, who have never really seen anything quite like it. Imagine several satellites that go in different directions at different times! As if Disney’s Pluto the Dog had romping puppies. There are other objects, of course, strewn about the Kuiper Belt. Like Charon, for instance that

revolves about Pluto as part of its system. All of them--Sedna, Salacia, Orcus, etc.--display amazing, inexplicable diversity. Astronomy Magazine puts it this way about Pluto: “By the time New Horizons finishes returning all its observations to Earth [Pluto being 2 billion miles from the Sun] in late 2016, Pluto will be transformed from a world known only from afar to one with better data sets than we have ever had on a newly-reconnoitered planet... Robert A. Schennum - An Architectural Life Robert A. Schennum arrived on Siesta Key in 1961 with a portfolio of drawings and a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from University of Southern California, a degree he had received in 1958. From 1958-61, he had worked in the office of Kaeser & McLeod in Madison, Wisconsin, an office closely related to Taliesin and the design principles of Frank Lloyd Wright. These Madison years were very important in forming Schennum’s philosophy of architecture, one that paralleled the teachings of F. L. Wright. He was fortunate in that he was put in charge of many of the projects coming into the Madison office, including several residences, all of the interior design for a 4-story office building, and a country school. Schennum met Mr. Wright while still a student in California. The elder man died in Arizona in 1959 while Schennum was working in Madison. Wes Peters, Wright’s son-in-law and most trusted assistant, placed the revered architect’s casket in the back of a van and drove non-stop to Spring Green, Wisconsin for Wright’s funeral and burial at his beloved home and estate known as Taliesin East. Schennum was introduced to Peters when he came to the office, a meeting that would eventually prove pivotal to Schennum’s career. In 1961, Schennum moved to Sarasota and went to work for Jack West & Associates. Among other West projects, Schennum was involved with building additions to Sarasota’s Landmark Hotel, including 2-story villas and a health spa. He was also involved with construction of Tuttle Elementary School. In 1962, Schennum got a job in Ralph Twitchell’s small office located on Siesta Key’s Big Pass. Here he was involved in creating design, detailed drawings, construction supervision and client conferences for various luxury residences, commercial buildings and resorts. Ralph Twitchell was considered

the father of the Sarasota School of architecture, best known for his design of the Lido Casino, which the city loved and never should have been torn down. Sarasota’s Mayor David Cohen, a musician and conductor who co-founded the West Coast Symphony Orchestra, also served as City Commissioner in Sarasota from 19601969. A great believer in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Cohen made it his personal mission to bring The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to our city to design and build the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Wes Peters was now chief architect for Taliesin Associated Architects, and the man was stretched thin completing a myriad of projects worldwide. (Within a very short time, he had been required to become licensed in every state of the union.) Although he designed the Van Wezel, Peters had to have someone he could trust in Sarasota to oversee its construction. He needed a skilled professional to serve as “Clerk of the Works”— the person in charge of all correspondence from all the consultants working on the Van Wezel. Encouraged by his Wisconsin colleague and Schennum’s former employer, Bill Kaeser, Peters chose Robert Schennum as man for the job. Schennum’s title: Architects Representative for Taliesin Associated Architects of the Frank Lloyd Wright foundation and Project Inspector for the City of Sarasota. It was a huge undertaking, keeping Schennum totally involved from 1968 to 1970. When the hall was painted purple, Sarasota was ablaze with controversy! When the grand opening came in January of 1970, Wes Peters showed up in a two-tone purple tux. During the gala performance,

Schennum moved all around the hall, checking out quality of sound, and was delighted to find it excellent. From 1970-71, Schennum became Architects Representative for West & Conyers, Architects & Engineers, as well as Project Inspector for the Sarasota County School Board on additions to Sarasota High School. The following year, Schennum was brought back to the Van Wezel to inspect new portions not included in the original contract, and to insure that stage equipment was being used properly for various performances. His long period of apprenticeship now complete, Robert Schennum received his State of Florida Architectural License in 1972. Since then he has worked for himself producing a variety of projects, mostly residential and small commercial jobs. Intermittently, he has worked with other architects on larger projects including the U.S. Garage office condominium with Frank Folsom Smith, as well as Coquina Beach Club in Bradenton Beach. He served as Project Manager for Ed Friedman & Associates on the

construction of Sarasota’s Main Plaza, a two-story shopping mall and parking garage, and also on the schematic design for future site development for Temple Beth Sholom. He worked with Johnson, Peterson & Holiday Architects on Mission Valley Golf & Country Club in Laurel, Fl. His most important private practice clients include Ed and Darlene Lowe, who had made a fortune after Ed created Kitty Litter. The couple purchased 2000 acres north of Arcadia, Fl., on the Peace River. From 1988-1993, Schennum created a Grand House, Cabana and Pool, “Oasis Guest Facilities”, and 3 elevated “Pole House” designs for their property named E & D Cattle Ranch. From 1999-2010, Schennum’s other important projects include the residence for Frank Howell on Siesta Key, as well as the Howell’s vacation home on the Isles of Old Bahama Bay, West End, Grand Bahama Island. Thanks to Ralph Twitchell, Schennum became comfortable

working with the Sarasota School of Architecture. As for his personal philosophy, however, Robert Schennum remains close to the principals of Frank Lloyd Wright who believed he was creating a truly American architecture instead of imitating architecture rooted in Europe. Most other Sarasota School architects— the most famous being Paul Rudolph—were inspired by the work of Walter Gropius, founder and director of the German Bauhaus. Gropius became a huge influence in America, having emigrated from Germany to England in 1934, then moving to the U.S. where he taught at Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1937 to 1952. Robert A Schennum has long been a resident of Siesta Key. In the past he has served on the Sarasota Key Association Board. He and his wife, Suzanne, live on Commonwealth Drive. Joan Lowery In 1981 she moved to Sarasota, where she lived for 5 years, first going to Storer Cable as a volunteer, and later hosting and producing her own talk show, A Woman’s View. It was so successful she was given a second television show, Sarasota on Review, and assigned to help create Storer Cable’s advertising sales department. Realizing she wanted to pursue a journalism career, Joan also worked as a talk show host, news reporter and anchor at WQSA News Talk Radio. “For me, being an on-air journalist contained all the elements I loved about working in educational and improvisational theater, but in a context that could reach far more people on a daily basis.” Armed with experience in radio and TV, Joan moved to the San Francisco area in 1986, becoming a free-lance entertainment journalist for Associated Press Radio. She anchored a weekly legal show

at a PBS station in San Mateo and wrote and produced health news and other segments for national television production companies. She went to L.A. for four months, where she covered Hollywood for Associated Press Radio, interviewing rock stars and stage and film actors. Returning to the Bay Area in 1990, Joan became an entertainment reporter on KTVU-TV’s popular “Mornings on Two” program where she produced weekly entertainment features. In 1992, she segued into doing Media Training with Bay Area hospitals, training and coaching physician and executive spokespeople to prepare and present themselves effectively on radio, TV and in print appearances. She utilized the camera as a tool for spokespersons to see themselves in action and improve their media presentation skills. In 1992, Joan was asked

to bring her media training program to Make Your Point Communications (MYP,) a Bay Area company specializing in media and presentation skills trainings for Silicon Valley companies. They became Intel’s U.S. media training vendor for the next 14 years, training thousands to communicate effectively with the media. In 2006, an Intel executive asked MYP Communications to adapt their media training program to professionals who meet regularly with executives in situations where it’s critical to communicate with brevity and impact. The company partnered with Intel to create “Making Your Point,” taking that course around the globe. The other side of “Making Your Point” is learning to listen well in order to know what point to make! Their company was again invited to partner with Intel to develop “The Listening Clinic”, a customized intensive course

teaching professionals the art of “Slow Listening”— to increase understanding, uncover deeper needs and build trust and rapport while resisting the tendency to move too quickly toward solutions. Even while jet-setting much of the time, Joan managed to move back to Sarasota in the late 1990’s and purchase a Tree House at The Landings to serve as home base. Today this beautiful waterfront home is jam-packed with exotic works of art and crafts gathered from her extensive travels. Things shifted at Intel a few years ago, and Joan’s peripatetic lifestyle slowed down. She transitioned back into working with healthcare providers. Taking a USF class in Health Care Mediation & Negotiation, she soon became involved with The Academy for Emerging Leaders in Patient Safety, a group of physicians and medical educators offering 4-day retreats in Telluride, Colorado,

for medical students and residents. Joan has served on their faculty for the past 4 years, becoming one of the few non-physicians on staff. Joan currently works with the Committee of Interns and Residents in NYC, training the union’s medical residents in a variety of communication skills-related areas. She is also involved in iLISTEN, a yearlong program for medical residents at Jamaica Hospital, Queens. Locally, she’s on the steering committee for the Embracing our Differences art exhibit. She also worked on Ringling College of Art and Design’s Imagination Conversation economic development project. Blooming this month Wishbone Flower Torenia fournieri (scientific name) of the Wishbone Flower or sometimes even called Summer Pansy or Clown Flower. Their upturned blooms are a welcome sight on a bright sunny day. These prolific bloomers can be grown in full sun or partial shade. The blooms are tubular and two-lipped and are blue-purple with a yellow or white throat. The foliage is long and slender with serrated edges They make a compact bushy plant if dead headed regularly. Their long blooming season is from April to November. They are a great addition in planter, boxes, hanging baskets, or planted as a border plant. They reach a height of about 18” tall. They can be started from seeds, cuttings, or plants purchased from local nurseries. Best of all they can tolerate Florida’s hot summers; just remember to water them if needed and plant in rich soil. Bring the pot of water to a boil. When the water has boiled for a few minutes drop in your red skin potatoes. Small potatoes should take about 10 minutes. Then add a fresh half pound (per person) Salmon filet into the boiling water. You can grill your Salmon if you wish but since this is an Irish technique, the Irish boil everything. After 4 minutes add your trimmed broccoli

florets. Broccoli will only take a few minutes as you want your florets to be crisp and flavorful. Gently strain the pot and plate. Salt and pepper fish and veggies to taste. Use melted butter for flavor if you wish. Serve with Cucumber Dill Sauce and enjoy. By the way…a Guinness with this meal wouldn’t hurt. Live Well... The HUB Baja Grill on Siesta Key raised $750 toward the camp by running a drink special over Memorial Day weekend. After spending the morning on Turtle Beach learning to use a Stand-Up Paddle board one of the young campers remarked, “This is my first time in the ocean, it’s so cool!” DB. Later that day the foster kids headed to the Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar for a private party luncheon. Many of the youths were astonished with the royal treatment they received at Daiquiri Deck’s private party held exclusively for them.
