FATHER & SON
The 2016 Landings “Holiday Cheer for Kids Fighting Cancer” program has begun. Many of you are familiar with the initiative to help families with limited resources who have children with cancer. Last year, thanks to the generosity of many of you, 20 families and 46 children were provided with gifts and food by our generous Landings neighbors. We are expanding the program this year with the goal of helping 30 families and 70 children. The campaign also helps to buy some gifts for the siblings of the children with cancer, who often receive no presents because there are simply insufficient resources. Some of the parents are not able to provide holiday support for their children because they have had to give up their jobs to care for the stricken
child, and all available funds are being used for medical needs. Family sponsors receive information about each member of the identified family to assist in the selection of gift/ donations. The information includes the makeup of family members, their ages and sex of children; clothing and shoe sizes and gift suggestions (games and toys) for each child. Landings families have also provided donations to the program with personal checks or gift cards for Walmart/ Cosco-type stores. Keep in mind that these families might be shopping for food at these stores as well. Sarasota family information is being provided by Children’s Cancer Center (CCC) (“helping children and families cope”). Continued on page 17

Jim Klein was born in Canton, Ohio on February 6, 1925. His father had immigrated to the U.S. from Eastern Europe, and had served in the U.S. Army during World War I. Although Jim grew up during the Great Depression, his father taught him that there was much to be thankful for in the United States. Upon entering Northwestern University in September of 1941, Jim enlisted in the NOTC. (Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp). He was 16 at that time and his family now lived in Rockford, Illinois. Jim Klein Pearl Harbor came on December 7, 1941 and war was declared with Japan. The ROTC was immediately called to active duty, but remained housed on
campus for several months. As the war continued, ROTC students were pulled out of school and given their commissions. Jim Klein was barely 19 when commissioned as Ensign, possibly becoming the youngest officer in the Navy at that time. He was sent for further training to Camp Bradford, a naval base outside of Norfolk, Virginia. That training completed, he was assigned as Gunnery Officer to the LST 1003 which was being built at the Boston Navy Yard. The ship was launched on June 8, 1944, and proceeded to Baltimore, Maryland, where it was decommissioned, rebuilt as a landing craft repair ship, and renamed the USS Coronis, ARL10. It was fully commissioned in November of 1944 and Jim joined the onboard crew. Continued on page 21
