FATHER & SON

The 2016 Landings “Holiday Cheer for Kids Fighting Cancer” program has begun. Many of you are familiar with the initiative to help families with limited resources who have children with cancer. Last year, thanks to the generosity of many of you, 20 families and 46 children were provided with gifts and food by our generous Landings neighbors. We are expanding the program this year with the goal of helping 30 families and 70 children. The campaign also helps to buy some gifts for the siblings of the children with cancer, who often receive no presents because there are simply insufficient resources. Some of the parents are not able to provide holiday support for their children because they have had to give up their jobs to care for the stricken

child, and all available funds are being used for medical needs. Family sponsors receive information about each member of the identified family to assist in the selection of gift/ donations. The information includes the makeup of family members, their ages and sex of children; clothing and shoe sizes and gift suggestions (games and toys) for each child. Landings families have also provided donations to the program with personal checks or gift cards for Walmart/ Cosco-type stores. Keep in mind that these families might be shopping for food at these stores as well. Sarasota family information is being provided by Children’s Cancer Center (CCC) (“helping children and families cope”). Continued on page 17

Jim Klein was born in Canton, Ohio on February 6, 1925. His father had immigrated to the U.S. from Eastern Europe, and had served in the U.S. Army during World War I. Although Jim grew up during the Great Depression, his father taught him that there was much to be thankful for in the United States. Upon entering Northwestern University in September of 1941, Jim enlisted in the NOTC. (Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp). He was 16 at that time and his family now lived in Rockford, Illinois. The attack on

Jim Klein Pearl Harbor came on December 7, 1941 and war was declared with Japan. The ROTC was immediately called to active duty, but remained housed on

campus for several months. As the war continued, ROTC students were pulled out of school and given their commissions. Jim Klein was barely 19 when commissioned as Ensign, possibly becoming the youngest officer in the Navy at that time. He was sent for further training to Camp Bradford, a naval base outside of Norfolk, Virginia. That training completed, he was assigned as Gunnery Officer to the LST 1003 which was being built at the Boston Navy Yard. The ship was launched on June 8, 1944, and proceeded to Baltimore, Maryland, where it was decommissioned, rebuilt as a landing craft repair ship, and renamed the USS Coronis, ARL10. It was fully commissioned in November of 1944 and Jim joined the onboard crew. Continued on page 21

LMA Meeting Notes LMA Pres. Larry Lawrence began the meeting by raving about the Halloween event led by Community Events chairman, Doug Day. He described the haunted house as being, “over-the-top” and went on to thank everyone connected with the event. Lawrence announced his satisfaction with the new security company and noted the security team would receive holiday bonuses again this year. Lawrence updated the board and residents attending the meeting on the status of the Siesta Promenade project. The Sarasota County Commission staff has requested Benderson undertake several additional studies beyond the customary ones required. Lawrence ended his report by relating the Landings Shopping Center was scheduled to be auctioned in mid-November. Principles who have expressed interest in the property, plan to continue to use the property as a shopping center. FINANCE COMMITTEE Chairman, Dick Bayles moved that the proposed budget for fiscal year 2017 be approved by the board with the exception of a minor error that a committee member discovered. The vote was unanimous without discussion. COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE Co-chair, Bob Manteiga was pleased to announce that after some significant circumstances which caused delays in the summer, both the external and internal

By Trebor Britt

websites are up and running. The external website address is, thelandingsofsarasota.com, and the internal site address is, insidethelandings.com. He related updating, tweaking and improving the website would be a continuing process. There are tabs for Happenings, Activities, News & Views, Resources and LMA/LRC. By accessing the Blogs link, residents will find tips on cooking, fishing, technology and book reviews. The committee is planning to hold a pizza party to celebrate the launching of the new website and show residents how to navigate the site. The event is scheduled for December 15th from 7-9 pm. COMMUNITY EVENTS Chairman Doug Day, estimated 200 children participated in this year’s Halloween event. Nearly 40 homeowners provided the bounty for the festively dressed youngsters. Day could not thank his organizers enough for their participation. They included, Judy Green, Christina Reinhoff, Bob Manteiga, Diane Hurter, George Micolopolous and David Jacaruso. LAKES Lakes chair, Michael Knupp reported algae blooms have dissipated due to colder weather, with the exception of Lakes 3 and 8. Allergy problems in these lakes are complicated by the drainage east of The Landings. Rerouted power to the East Coast during the recent hurricane caused an issue with several fountain timers. These

timers have now been reset. Residents who notice fountain light outages are asked to contact Michael Knupp at 941-924-1050. A meeting with Sarasota County to discuss dead trees in the Preserve will be held soon. DRAINAGE Committee chair, Michael Knupp is hopeful the installation of new valley gutters on Heron Way and Kestral Park Circle will improve drainage in those areas. There were no other drainage issues to report. ROADS Roads chair, Don McMurray updated the board on the massive road repaving project. Outside of a few issues, he reported it is proceeding smoothly and on schedule. McMurray wanted to assure residents that a review of minor damages to the sprinkler heads etc. would be done once the project was completed and the responsibility for repair would be assigned. He expressed his appreciation for the new engineer who stepped in after the untimely death of Kurt Jensen. Lastly, McMurray recommended the board commission a new road study because he has some doubts the roads will last another 20 years. After McMurray’s report, a resident expressed concern about doing a project like this during season. She urged the board to do the next major paving project during offseason. Michael Knupp added he witnessed a few potential safety violations during the project. He recommended the

board look at companies’ safety records before the next paving contract is signed. LMA Pres. Larry Lawrence thanked Don McMurray for all the hard work he did on this massive project. LANDSCAPING Landscaping chair, Connie Goldman reported adding plants, shrubs, flowers, and magnolia trees to The Landings entrance and a few other areas. The addition of mulch throughout The Landings is continuing.

SAFETY AND SECURITY Chairman Neil Goldman reported his committee would be reviewing the LMA speeding policies to ensure the language matches up with the Florida statute on sanctioning. Revisions would be presented to the board at the next meeting. He announced the speed detection program has had a positive effect by reducing speeding in the community and would continue. Around The Landings LMA Nominating Committee Seeking Potential Candidates for Board Membership By Henry Rhodes, Chair of LMA Nominating Committee

The three goals of this year’s Nominating Committee are to seek candidates 1) to improve the gender board representation, 2) to improve year-round resident representation, and 3) who possess specific skill sets needed for a wellfunctioning board. The Presidents of Associations will vote to fill five of nine seats at the February 2, 2017 LMA Board meeting.

Several potential candidates are being contacted but the committee would like to receive names of any resident who may want to be considered or that they want to recommend for consideration. A committee member will contact them to discuss the responsibilities of board membership and to determine their interest and availability to serve. Please send

any name to one of the committee members as soon as possible. The by-laws do permit nominations from the floor on the night of the election. Qualified nominations received in writing thirty days prior to the meeting by the Association Manager will appear on the ballot sent to the Presidents beforehand.

Vehicle Decal System

to get the gates fully operational as quickly as possible. Correcting the situation requires that we replace the controllers at all the affected lanes as well as the nine-year old software, which will not “talk” to the new controllers. The equipment and software has been ordered and we hope for installation by December 1st. At the time of this writing, it is unclear whether the data required by the new system will need to be entered

manually, involving additional delay, or if we will be able to transfer it from the old system. We realize that it is a huge inconvenience for those who need to add or change vehicles and to provide new residents with full access to our community. We will notify you when normal resident lane entry has been restored.

For those of you that need a new or replacement vehicle decal to permit access through the residentonly lanes at our gates, you need to be aware that there is a delay before they are operational. The system that controls the gates at those lanes has had two unrelated computer hardware and software failures. We had scheduled the replacement system for early in 2017 and are working

LHA Meeting Notes At its regularly scheduled meeting, the Landings Homeowners Association board voted to approve the removal of trees on Flicker Field Circle and Peregrine Point Circle East with a requirement to replace with new trees. It also approved a request for removal of a bush on Pine Harrier Drive and replacement roof tile on Landings Lane and another on Landings Court. Also approved were a new pool cage and driveway pavers at residences on Landings Terrace. The next regularly scheduled meeting is on December 8, 2016 at the Landings Racquet Club at 7:00 pm. The board approved the preliminary 2017 budget that provided for a Landings Homeowners Association annual assessment of $100.00, an increase of $30.00 from the 2016 assessment. NOTICE: At the Annual Meeting of the Association on February 9, 2017, an election to fill the members of its Board of Directors will take place. Members of the Association wishing to be placed on the ballot for that election must state so in writing to its Secretary by December 31, 2016. A candidate may provide a one-page statement that will be included in election materials that will be mailed on January 10, 2017. Secretary: Richard Bayles, 1729 Landings Way, Sarasota FL 34231, rubayles@alum.mit.edu.

President’s Column I want to welcome the many seasonal residents that have returned or that we will see shortly. It is wonderful to see your smiling faces and to enjoy the enthusiasm you share as you come into the sunshine. Catching up on what our friends have been doing over the summer is great fun. This is truly an exciting time for Landins-the biggest and best National Father/Son Clay Court Championships have just been completed; most have celebrated the perennial family and friends’ Thanksgiving gatherings and now the holidays are before us. November and December definitely are very special months for Landings residents!!

By Larry Lawrence

LANDINGS AESTHETICS I’ve heard from many how beautiful you find The Landings upon your return. We constantly are making enhancements within our budgetary constraints. Here are several highlights. The monuments at the Landings Boulevard entrance have recently been planted with flowers and all of the islands have been pruned and prepped for the fall/winter. Curbs on several islands are scheduled to be repaired and many of the curbs re-painted. You are well aware that certain roads have recently been repaved and after the paving tracks dissipate stripping around the main islands will be applied as will painting of the white lines along primary roadways. As

many of the street light post have mildew, moss and grime, we are evaluating power washing them to determine the extent they can be re-furbished. We are also working with FPL on the replacement of the rusted lamp housings and evaluating the replacement of the LED lamps. At the North Gate new signage and posts have been installed and this replacement program will now continue to the Pine Harrier area. THE LANDINGS SHOPPING CENTER The shopping center was auctioned on November 16 and there were multiple bidders. Unfortunately at this writing, no information has been released by

the auction house if a bid was accepted or the winning bidder, if there is one. We will keep checking on this information. SIESTA PROMENADE The county has not determined the scope of work to be required of Benderson so there is nothing substantive to report. The newly appointed County Commissioner, Michael Moran, will have been seated on November 22.This could change the dynamic of the Commission as it deals with the Promenade since he was strongly supported by developers. ROAD PAVING When you receive this edition of The Eagle the road paving

for this year will have been completed, perhaps with the exception of some of the pothole repairs. If the latter is the case, they will be done soon. As with any major project, there were several unforeseen situations which led to some significant delays. The original plan was to pave in late spring-early summer after the seasonal residents departed. Unfortunately the original bids came in nearly double the estimates due to the vast amount of construction in South West Florida. Subsequently our consultant engineer passed unexpectedly and a replacement had to be retained. Continued on page 9

President’s Column This pushed the paving time frame into OctoberNovember. Be assured that there were serious discussions as to whether it would be better to postpone until next year. Ultimately it was decided that it would be preferable to work out the practical problems that would occur with paving now. The good news is that the quality of the paving is very good and we are pleased with the work of Driveway Maintenance, the contractor. As anticipated, there were a number of inconveniences, but they were handled with a minimum of consternation. Also there was some minor damage which is being addressed by the contractor and/or LMA. The next scheduled paving is 5 years from now. However, in the not too distant future there are plans to re-examine the paving plan to determine if adjustments are required. I want to express appreciation to the presidents of the four associations involved for

Continued from page 5

their coordination with their residents and the contractor. Also the homeowners were most cooperative in making arrangements not to drive on the roads under construction-not an insignificant inconvenience for many. There were some glitches along the way but all-in-all the contractor and engineer were competent and accommodating of the special needs of our community. As some residents may not know, Don McMurray, the Roads Chair and project coordinator, sold his home and will be moving right after Thanksgiving. We greatly appreciate Don seeing the project through as he was dealing with moving. He did a terrific job of organization, coordination and problem solving. The Landings owe Don a significant debt of gratitude and I in particular am ever so appreciative. Kudos to Don for his commitment and a job well done.

VETERANS DAY COMMEMORATION On November 11, a Veterans Day Celebration was held at the Landings Racquet Club in tribute to the 55 Landings veterans. Nearly everyone in attendance commented that this was the best celebration they have ever attended at The Landings. Praise is appropriate for Adrienne and Howard Feldman who spearheaded the planning and execution of the event and they were assisted by Dick Bayles, Doug Day, Jerry and Carol Welch and Bill Whitman. This team was also supported by a group of volunteers and the staff of the LRC. What an example of why The Landings is such a premier community in which to live!! LMA NOMINATING COMMITTEE AND ELECTIONS Henry Rhodes is writing the primary article on this issue, but I’ll mention two issues. Although we are seeking candidates for the LMA Board of Directors, there are

many needs/ opportunities for residents to utilize their talents on the numerous LMA Committees, which are listed in the green box to the right. Please review the list and give consideration as to where you can participate for the betterment of The Landings. Also in 2010 the LMA governing documents were amended to provide for term limits. Directors are restricted to serving three two year terms. I am the first person to be subject to those provisions so obviously I will not be running for re-election. I have enjoyed my service to LMA and hopefully have made a contribution to making The Landings an impressive, enjoyable, welcoming community. I will remain in office until the February 1 LMA Annual Meeting. CLOSING May all of you have a joyous, healthy and safe Holiday and envision a new year with a new president with all the excitement and concern which that brings. Cheerfully, Larry

THE LANDINGS EAGLE December 2016

I grew up as a Chicago Cubs fan in the depression years of the 1930s and early 1940s. I lived in Madison, Wisconsin and saved pennies to attend Sunday doubleheader games at Wrigley Field. I went with a friend whose father drove us. As I recall, seats were 25 and 50 cents. I suffered through Cubs World Series losses in 1935, 1938, 1941, and 1945. In those years, the Cubs batting order began with the three H’s, Stan Hack, Billy Herman, and Gabby Hartnett. My favorite Cub was first baseman Phil Cavaretta. Before moving to Sarasota, I ushered at sporting events at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. At an Old-Timers baseball game, I was assigned to the seats behind home plate. An hour before the game it started to rain, so I moved several rows back under cover. Three ladies then came up to me and asked if they could sit next to me until the rain stopped. “Of course,” I replied. Their conversation revealed to me that they were a grandmother, mother, and daughter, and that they knew a lot about baseball. When the rain let up a bit, players came out on the field. When Phil Cavaretta came out, I said, “There’s Phil Cavaretta, my favorite player”. The lady next to me, the grandmother, then put her arm around me and said, “Bless your heart, that’s my husband.” One of the many rewards of being a Cub’s fan! Wearing my Cubs T-shirt and cap throughout the play-offs and World Series, I discovered, to my great delight, that The Landings is heavily populated with fans of the Chicago Cubs.

Racquet Club News |President’s Report By Dick Bayles

|Manager’s Report

At its November meeting, the Club’s Board of Directors approved a 2017 budget that maintained the annual assessment at the $1,244 amount of past years, despite increases in operating costs. We could maintain this level because we have increased our membership in each of the recent years, which we believe is attributable to our focus on enhancing and maintaining our facilities and programs. We have also undertaken to establish reserves to ensure that future maintenance requirements can be funded without assessment increases. The assessment notices were mailed in midNovember. They have been sent separately from the Annual Meeting package this year, which will be mailed in December. We hosted the annual Father/Son National Clay Championships, which added an 80’s and over Ultra Championship. Our member and guest audiences continue to be the most in any of the related championships. My thanks go out to Kevin, Joe and the staff for the extra work involved in managing the tournament and to Ralph, Dee and the members who contributed their time and energy to making it a success. The Club’s annual meeting will take place at 7:00 pm on January 17, 2017. Members who are interested in running for the three seats whose terms expire at that meeting are encouraged to submit a written statement of interest and any other information they would like to have included in the notice of meeting sent to all members prior to the meeting. Because the Club and the board are very active during off-season, positions are best filled by full-time resident members. The deadline for registering to stand a seat on the board is December 5, 2016.

I would like to thank all the members that participated as host families during this year’s National Championship Father/Son tournaments and especially Ralph and Dee Ricapito for organizing them. As usual, the hosts did an outstanding job catering the player lunch. The quantity and quality of food was quite impressive. Thanks again for your help in making this a special tournament for all the players. Every year they tell Joe and I how much they appreciate and enjoy it. The Annual LRC Holiday Dinner Dance is Sunday, December 11th in the Lakeside Clubhouse with cocktails at 6:00 pm and dinner at 6:30 pm. Sammy J and a saxophone player will be the live entertainers again this year. If you came either of the last two years, you know how amazing they are. James Riegel from Black Tie Catering is back again with another delicious menu. The menu specifics are posted in the Tennis Pro Shop with the signup sheet. The cost is $28 per person. Please register in the Pro Shop by December 7th if you would like to attend the party. Seating is limited for this event so please don’t delay. Season is just getting started and we have already seen a flurry of activity at the Club. It is only going to get busier in the next few months. As you can imagine, on certain days of the week, parking is at a premium. Thursday mornings seem to be the most hectic. Along with the morning court reservations, we have three exercise classes, Watercolor painting, a Mah Jongg class and potentially two home league matches. In an effort to alleviate some of the parking strain during the morning hours, I would like to encourage members who live close to the Club and have the ability to walk or ride a bike over to do so. Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

News From the Court By Joe Venezia I’ve said it nine times before and I’ll say it again; another fantastic Father / Son Tennis Tournament. In addition to the Ultra Division there were several new teams playing this year along with the returning favorites. The player comments (tournament, lunch and dinner) were positive. A huge thank you to Dee and Ralph Ricapito, Paul, Angie, Colin, Deb, Barbara, Dick, Kevin, Alice, Gary and Edvin, Hans and Yordanis for all their hard work maintaining the courts. To the host members and to everyone who brought delicious dishes, helped serve and clean up, we couldn’t have done it without your help. I would also like to extend a big thank you to our sponsors: Antigua, Judy and Tara, Publix, Best Western and Audi. You, the members and sponsors, make the tournament a success year after year.

Men’s and ladies tennis leagues have begun. If any Landings residents are interested in joining a team, contact me and I’ll put you in touch with the team captain. All the information you need to sign up for The Landings Intraclub Tennis League is in the following article. Sign-up sheets are in the Pro Shop. My lesson/clinic book is beginning to fill up. Contact me at 941-993-2628 or lrctennisdirector@verizon.net to schedule the best time that works for you. Get ready for some exciting tennis! In December it’s John and Landings resident, Tina Von Kessel vs. Landings resident, Kelly Dancer and yours truly in an exhibition not to be missed. Check in the Pro Shop for all the details. John and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your continued support and we wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season, a Happy New Year and great tennis in 2017! See you on the courts..........

Intra Club Tennis League We have organized the LRC Doubles tournament that will be played on Saturdays and Sundays starting in December. The time between Christmas and New Year will be used for make-up matches as there are always players who cannot play on a certain weekend. The format will be very similar to the Mixed doubles tournament that we had last May and June which was lightly competitive, but also a lot of fun. At that tournament, we counted the number of sets that were won by each team. The team that won the most sets was the winner of the tournament. We would like to organize mixed-doubles, men’s doubles and ladies’ doubles matches. You can sign-

up with your preferred partner. If you do not have a partner, our pros Joe & John will assign you a partner. The winning doubles team from each tournament (ladies’ doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles) will play in an exhibition match with Joe and John. To make it competitive, each player of the winning doubles team will be paired with either Joe or John. As our pros will have to play with three different teams, these pro-am matches will be one set long. This doubles tournament is open for every tennis player of the LRC so please sign-up with or without a tennis partner. We are looking forward to a great tennis season that allows us to meet and play with many of our LRC players in a slightly competitive, but definitely fun tennis format.

Veteran’s Day Celebration at The Landings By Debbie Flessner/ Photos by Bob Manteiga Since President Eisenhower officially changed the name of a fall day of remembrance from Armistice Day to Veteran’s Day in 1954, November 11 has become a special date to honor those brave men and women who have served the United States in the armed forces. In The Landings community in particular, there are more than 50 veterans from all branches of the military who currently live here. On Friday, November 11 of this year, they were honored at a special luncheon inside the Racquet Club. Keynote speaker Col. Bob Fernander, U.S. Army Ret., addressed the men and women before lunch was served. “The Landings veterans have served across the years, and approximately 23 million of our fellow United States citizens now carry the title of ‘veteran’”, he said. “You make us proud to be Americans.” Col. Fernander, who served two tours in Vietnam, was one of the original group of friends who came up with the idea of hosting a recurring celebration of veterans in The Landings community. The 2016 edition was the

fourth of its kind, though t h ey h aven’t b ee n he ld in consecutive years. In between those occurrences, the neighborhood has a Memorial Day event, where they pay homage to those who have died in service to our country. Col. Jerry Welch, U.S. Army Ret., was another member of the planning group, along with Adrienne and Howard Feltman, a Navy veteran who fought in WWII. Col. Welch explained how they came up with the idea. “The people in The Landings are very patriotic in the first place, and we are also very athletic,” he said. “After we play tennis, we sit down and talk about things that are going on in the world. We decided we needed to do this for our community.” Mr. Feltman welcomed the luncheon group to the event, remembering the pride in military during WWII, which he felt in the small town in New Jersey where he grew up. He said that all the homes displayed banners across the front with stars sewn on—a blue star

Lenora Jost and the Landoliers

Bob Fernander (or stars) meant that you had one or more family members serving in the military and gold stars represented your military family members who had passed away. “Today we have a different kind of environment,” he said. “Hopefully, someday we can get back to the spirit and hope of yesteryear.” Bringing with them the promise of a positive future for the country was the Riverview High School JROTC Color Guard, led by 1st Sgt. Fernando Garcia, U.S. Army Ret. He said that there are about 140 cadets in the Riverview JROTC program, and close to 16 cadets who participate in the Color Guard. On this particular

day, the cadets were all females, each of whom said they had goals of continuing on to either attend college and join the ROTC there or join the military or an intelligence agency. Sgt. Garcia said that though most students who are in the JROTC program don’t necessarily go into the military, there is much to be gained from participating in the program for students of all interests. “We tell them they first need to go to college,” he said. “We teach them to be good citizens, and most importantly, we want them to be leaders in their communities.” Continued on the next page

For the honored guests, it was a day to remember, from the emotional singing of the National Anthem at the beginning to a moving rendition of “God Bless America” just before lunch. There was even a reading of a letter and a certificate from U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and U.S. Congressman Vern Buchanan, thanking all in attendance for their service. Towards the end of Col. Fernander’s speech, he addressed the current political climate,

while he expressed hope for a unified United States, which could work together toward common goals. “In this time of war against terrorism, regardless of your political affiliation, please support our troops and their families, and pray for their safe return,” he said.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE December 2016

Through the Eyes of a Veteran USS Coronis left Baltimore on January 4, 1945 for Purvis Bay in the Solomon Islands, with Jim Klein assigned as gunnery officer. The trip across the Pacific took ten days after leaving the Panama Canal. In Purvis Bay, the ship was further equipped to repair battle damaged landing crafts in preparation for the invasion of Okinawa. USS Coronis had two crews – a repair crew of 125 workers, and the ship’s crew which consisted of 60 seamen. The repair crew was made up of carpenters, welders, electricians, metal workers and specialists in naval ship repairs. The USS Coronis headed north to Ulithi, a small atoll in the Pacific which was the staging area for the invasion of Okinawa which lay about 300 miles South of the Japanese mainland. To Jim Klein, it seemed that the whole Pacific fleet had descended upon this small atoll. From Ulithi, the Coronis headed north to a small island, Miyako, just a few miles off the coast of Okinawa. The Navy’s plan was to take Okinawa and use it as the staging point for the planned allied invasion of the Japanese mainland. Early on the morning of

April 3, 1945, the invasion of Okinawa began. The Japanese fought back strenuously and Jim saw naval battles replete with Kamikaze air attacks. Two and a half months later the island was taken and Jim heard horrifying reports of hundreds of ritual suicides by

Japanese officers. The USS Coronis was part of the invasion fleet for most of the entire operation. It not only repaired damaged landing craft and the smaller radar picket ships, it operated a fog generator to give protective cover from an air attack to ships lying in her area. At the end of the Okinawa invasion, the Coronis left Okinawa, and sailed for Saipan and Guam to load spare parts and supplies. They passed the island chains of Tinian, Rota, and Guam. Continuing to Subic Bay, the

Coronis was assigned to serve as a repair ship for the training group preparing for the invasion of Japan. On Aug. 14, 1945, after the use of two atomic bombs, President Truman announced “THE WAR IS OVER!” After refueling and resupplying, the Coronis returned to Okinawa to repair landing ships of the 5th fleet. She left Okinawa for Japan on the same day McArthur was signing the peace in Tokyo – Sept. 2, 1945. She sailed up Wakayama Bay to Kobe, and remained at that base until March 16, 1946.

When the ship’s repair duties were completed in Japan, she was ordered to Shanghai, China, where she stayed from March 21 to April 9, 1946, before sailing back to the U.S. The Coronis arrived at Astoria, Oregon, on May 2, 1946, and sailed up the Columbia River to Portland for decommissioning. Jim Klein had served on that ship for almost two years. The Navy then had Jim travel to the naval base at Great Lakes, Illinois, where he was released to the Naval Reserves as LTJG. He returned to Northwestern to complete his studies, and soon received a BS in Business Administration. In 1948, Jim was offered a promotion to the rank of full Lieutenant if he would stay in the Naval Reserve, but he felt his time had been served. Jim Klein took full retirement and release from the Naval Reserve, and proceeded to get on with his life which included marriage in 1949 and starting a family soon thereafter. When asked what special values he learned from his time in the service, Jim has this to say: “I learned that Americans must protect their way of life from all challenges that present themselves.”

LMA Meeting Notes Continued from page 3

TECHNOLOGY Technology committee chair, Dick Bayles reported they are still working on challenges with the vehicle decal system. He is hopeful the issues will be resolved soon. A resident attending the meeting brought up concerns regarding vendor access on the weekend. After a brief discussion, vendor access will be tightened in the future. NOMINATING COMMITTEE Committee chairman, Henry Rhodes gave a progress report to the board. He stated his committee will follow the three goals established by LMA President Larry Lawrence. These are to improve gender balance, obtain a better representation from “boomers”, and include more members who are fulltime residents.

24

THE LANDINGS EAGLE December 2016

Currently there are two board members who have agreed to run for re-election and one new candidate at this time. The LMA is going to look into whether four or five board members need to be elected or re-elected this year. Rhodes went on to say his committee was attempting to contact and meet with several other potential board candidates. They hope to have at least three additional candidates for a “Meet the candidates” meeting scheduled in January. The election of the new board will be done in February. Henry Rhodes, Carole Furlong, and Michael Knupp serve on the Nominating Committee. LMA President, Larry Lawrence mentioned he would be the first president to vacate his position due to term limits. He promised to continue serving The Landings community until

the new president started their work. NATURE TRAIL COMMITTEE During a discussion of new business a resident wanted to know if there was indeed a Nature Trail Committee, who was on it, and whether they are meeting or not. The resident mentioned several people who would like to be on the committee, have not received a response. LMA President Larry Lawrence reported the committee had been meeting, but hasn’t had anything to report. Board member, Michael Knupp suggested the nature trail committee be required to submit a monthly report to the President like the rest of the committees. The resident concerned is going to try to make contact with the committee again.

Lift Your Mood with Acts of Kindness Through The New Year By Dee Ricapito Have you ever been on the receiving end of a thoughtful gesture or have done something kind for someone and felt better for it. Kind-hearted people come in all shapes and sizes and have one thing in common, lots of them live in The Landings! Just when destiny “rains” hammers on you with a surprise cancer diagnosis, or a mother’s funeral, etc. I realize it’s not easy to fall into a depression in this neighborhood. Since so many demonstrate a “Feel Goodby-Doing-Good” attitude. Helping others seems to take the focus off your own worries and helps you feel gratified for the life you have “rain or shine.” It’s hard to believe it’s the holiday season already and the New Year is coming upon us. For some it’s the best time of the year for others it’s stuff that causes stress. Acts of kindness can brighten a holiday. It doesn’t have to be a big thing, but little things throughout the year such as:

“I’ve always wanted to create something special,” exclaims Angelo. “A place that goes beyond ’eating dinner’ that makes you feel comfortable and happy, with no time pressure, a place to enjoy personal food presentation and entertainment.”

• Lending change to someone needing it quickly at the checkout counter or print out an extra coupon and give it to the next customer in line with a full cart...(enjoy the smiles). • Grabbing the empty cart for a mom with kids or elderly neighbors with groceries, or hold the door open for someone you don’t even know. • Smile at someone for no good reason. Give a compliment willingly, or a sincere hand squeeze when you say thank you. • Give a friend some free time, house sit a pet or offer to babysit, or just give a phone call of support to cheer a friend’s day. • Say “Thank you” when you see a firefighter, military, even police officers for their service. These things won’t change the world, but the positive feedback is a holiday “feel good” we can carry through the whole next New Year! Joy for the Holidays.

The dream is here now with Angelo’s Wine Club, a members-only private dining room that is exciting and very gratifying. Enjoy an evening of the Angelo experience... stay as long as you like... dining is always a five course presentation and always outstanding values to be savored at a relaxed pace. Live music is here every night, from the area’s fine musical artists. There is some exclusivity in membership because Angelo’s Wine Club is limited in the number of members it can accommodate. If you are interested, please phone Jessica from 2 to 4 daily with questions and to begin your membership at 941-312-4747. If you phone after hours, leave a message and mention Angelo’s Wine Club and we will return the call. Angelo’s is open 6-days-a-week, serving dinner from 4-9:30 pm. Friday and Saturday until 10pm. Closed on Sunday. 6115 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34231

LMA BUDGET LMA Budget Approved At its November meeting, the Board of Directors approved the budget for 2017. The Annual Assessment for the year is $1,069.00 per unit, a reduction of $24.00 from the prior year. The slight reduction was achieved despite increases in several operating expenses by re-evaluating the status of our reserve accounts and making some adjustments to their portion of our assessment. The Annual Assessment is due and payable on January 1, 2017. Payments received after January 15, 2017 are subject to additional fees and interest.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE December 2016

Captain Jim Klopfer’s Fishing Report Adventure Charters 941-371-1390

December is a month that will test an angler’s ability to adapt to current conditions. Water quality will vary throughout the area as passing cold fronts churn up the Gulf of Mexico. The flats between Stickney Pt. and Blackburn Pt. will be more productive under these circumstances. After several days of nice weather, the water near the passes will clear and those areas will once again be good spots to fish. Creeks and canals will attract fish as water temperatures drop. Often times the tides will be very low in the morning in December. This will move trout, pompano, and other species off of the flats and into the deeper channels. There simply is not enough water up on the flat for them to be comfortable. Bouncing a jig down the sides of channel edges can be very productive. As the tide rises, fish will move up onto the flats to feed. Afternoon high tides can be the best time to fish the deep flats this time of year. A live shrimp under a cork is very effective, as are jigs with plastic grub tails. Natural colors such as olive, rootbeer, and motor oil work well in the slightly darker water. There are several creeks and countless canals in our area, and all of them are productive winter time spots. Phillippi Creek and the Grand Canal on Siesta Key are some of the most popular fishing holes. Rapala X-Raps work very well on snook and jack crevelle for anglers who prefer to cast artificial baits. They elicit explosive strikes and allow anglers

to cover a lot of area fairly quickly. Once fish are located, large live shrimp and slowly worked soft plastic baits will also catch their share. Sheepshead and black drum will be found in the deeper holes, a live shrimp works best for these tasty bottom dwellers. The Myakka River lies a short drive east of Siesta Key and offers visitors a unique angling opportunity; the chance to catch a trophy snook casting plugs while experiencing fantastic scenery. This is truly “Old Florida” and is a quiet and serene trip in a great natural setting. Along with snook, bass, baby tarpon, gar, and other species are encountered. Alligators and exotic bird life is seen on most trips as well. Both Big Pass and New Pass will be good spots to fish when the water is clean, especially on the morning incoming tide. Jigs bounced off the bottom will catch pompano, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and ladyfish. Structure in both passes will attract sheepshead, along with grouper, snapper, flounder, and other species. Slack tides are the best times to fish these spots, a swiftly moving tide makes getting the bait to the bottom difficult. The many docks along Bird Key are especially productive for sheepies. Surf casters all along Siesta Key will score on whiting, silver trout, flounder, and more using live and frozen shrimp. A #1 hook with just a little bit of weight works best. Silver spoons will catch mackerel if they are still around, along with ladyfish.

Halloween Celebration at The Landings

Photos by Bob Manteiga

I call this collection “kids, parents, and ghouls”. This year’s expanded event attracted many more people than the year before, including a haunted house filled with all kinds of spooky stuff. The Trick-or-Treat Trail ran along Peregrine Point Drive, Kestral Parkway South, and Flicker Field Cir.

These were submitted by Karmen Pierce. First pic is John & Sandy Kelley on Landings Halloween night and second pic is (from left to right): Joan Dreyfus, Dee Recapito, Carol Carr, Karmen Pierce, and Sandy Kelley.

Welcoming A New Neighbor To The Landings By Dee Ricapito With an eye for beauty, and a love of natural scenery, Arpad Polga’r, his wife, Tunde and son, Daniel, made their beautiful home in The Landings recently. They enjoy the Sarasota lifestyle as well as the Siesta Key atmosphere at the beach. They felt it important to educate Daniel in the United States where he attends the Outdoor Academy during the school year, and the rest of the time the family splits between here and Budapest. Years ago, Arpad applied himself in the Art world business. His vigors proved successful, and over the years was able to open the Polga’r Art Gallery which now houses classic and modern paintings, clocks, and aesthetic and wonderful goldsmith’s works in Budapest. He was also one of the first to hold a private auction there. His auction house has grown over time and is proud to note the highest prices obtained at auctions were achieved at his auction house. They are currently held about six times a year on Va’ci Street in Budapest. (One unique item auctioned there was of the Fenyo’ estate, the pen used for signing the accession treaty of Hungary to the European Union). Our gallery owner, collector, and wonderful neighbor and family, all with an eye for beauty, enjoy The Landings park-like surroundings so near the city.

Wake & Shake Just roll out of bed...your hair looks great!

The style is in the cut, not the blow-dry, so you don’t have to fuss with your hair to look good... even fine, limp or curly hair... and my new steam color process + Olaplex creates richer brunettes and spectacular blondes. The colors go deeper and last longer, yet are far more gentle to the hair. By Appointment Only with Ian:
