This year’s program is off to a great start. Many Landings residents are aware of the charities which are supported by resident donations. The initiative helps families with limited resources who have cancer or are from abused families. The objective is to buy toys, clothing and food for these families. Last year, 28 families with 62 children were helped. Family sponsors receive information about each member of the identified family to assist in the selection of gift/ donations. The information includes the makeup of family members, their ages and gender of children, clothing and shoe sizes and gift suggestions. Hopefully, The Landings residents who adopt a family in need will be able to buy and wrap the presents. This is important to the family whose parents are stressed for time and caring for their
children. Residents are encouraged to invite two or more friends and neighbors to join them in making donations. If not, donations in the form of checks are gratefully accepted. A kick-off party for this year’s program was held at the landings racquet club on November 8 and resulted in nine new donors and three checks for the charities. Several people who were not able to attend have contacted committee members and pledged donations as well. In addition, Deirdre and Ken D’Silva held a private kick-off party at their house and nine children from Hannah House were ‘adopted’ for gifts. The committee is very enthusiastic over the reaction to this year’s campaign and hope every Landings resident will become involved. Contact Henry Rhodes (947-927-1047) for more information.
LMA Voting Process As we come to the end of the year, it is time to start planning for the election of the LMA Board of Directors in February. The LMA Nominating Committee has been tasked by the LMA Board to recruit candidates to run for openings on the LMA Board. The committee’s goal is to find more candidates to run than there are open seats. We believe that this will produce more transparency and fairness in our elections. Also, in the interest of transparency, this article is intended to provide our residents with information outlining procedures for holding Landings’ elections in accordance with The Landings’ bylaws. The major difference in how elections in The Landings take place verses political elections is how votes are cast. Political elections are one person, one vote. Our

By Michael Knupp
bylaws differ in that they require that the voting is to be done by the Presidents of each constituent Association in the Landings with a designated number of votes allocated by the number of housing units in each association. The number of an Association’s units are then multiplied by the number of vacant positions. For example, if there are 10 units in an association and there are 5 open seats on the board, the association has 50 votes to cast for candidates. The Association president then has the option to cast those 50 votes for whomever they decide. He/she can cast all votes for one person or allocate the 50 votes for as many candidates as they decide appropriate. The candidates and their resumes will be in a separate article in The Eagle and nominations from the floor can be made
the night of the election. In order for you and your association to have any influence on the outcome of the election, we urge you to meet with the president of your Association and let him/her know which candidate(s) you believe should be supported and how you think the president should allocate your association’s share of the votes. Ideally the various association boards should be involved in determining the allocation of its votes. Someone once said, “if you don’t vote, you get the government you deserve.“ The Nominating Committee urges all constituent presidents to (1) attend the meet the candidates’ night on January 18, 7pm at the LRC and (2) vote for the candidates at the February 7, LMA Board meeting. See companion article: LMA Board Candidate Elections on page 5.

LMA Meeting Notes LMA Pres., Dick Bayles began the meeting by yielding his president’s report to Larry Lawrence’s report from the nominating committee. NOMINATING COMMITTEE Committee Chairman, Larry Lawrence reported the six candidates running to fill the five vacant seats are Dick Bayles, Kristy Bowen, Elena Darden, Roger Kidder, Norm Olshansky and Richard Stern. January 18 was established as the date the Association Presidents would meet the candidates. The committee is making an extra effort to encourage every president to attend the meeting. The Election will be held February 7 at the LMA Board meeting. FINANCE REPORT Chairman, Dick Bayles reported two unexpected expenses would lead to a $7600 loss at year-end or 1.1% of the budget. The expenses were for an $8800 hurricane Irma debris cleanup expense and a $6000 expense for road striping work done several months ago. 2018 BUDGET A motion was made to approve the proposed 2018 budget. The motion passed without dissent. COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE Co-chairs, Bob Manteiga and Joan Lowery reported establishing an outline of the next steps involved in creating a solid website infrastructure. Captivation Media is being contacted to redesign the internal site. The committee is seeking a board member willing to be the new Committee Chairman. COMMUNITY EVENTS Chairman Doug Day, reported good participation in the Saturday, October 28, Trick-or-Treat Trail event in spite of the rain. A few residents attending the

meeting expressed an interest in being added to the trail and leading their neighborhood to participate next year. FERAL CATS A Landings resident announced a few more details regarding the November panel of experts meeting to discuss issues related to the feral cat population. Dick Bayles and The Board were also thanked for their interest and support. EXTERNAL AFFAIRS Landings Shopping Center: Committee chairman Larry Lawrence answered a few questions regarding the shopping center, but had nothing new to report. Siesta Promenade: Lawrence reported he does not expect much action on this project until after the new year. LANDSCAPING LMA Pres., Dick Bayles was pleased to announce there are a couple of people who may be interested in chairing this committee after Connie Goldman steps down. SPEED ENFORCEMENT Roads Committee Chairman, Rudy Blohm reported an incident of a speeding Jeep Wrangler nearly hitting him while he was walking. His report started a lengthy discussion of speed enforcement at The Landings among board members and residents. New technology that would allow the capture of the rear license plate was discussed. Three Sarasota communities are already using the new technology. Safety and Security Chairman, Neil Goldman recommended researching the cost of such equipment, how many cameras would be needed, where they would be placed, as well as how many hours would be needed and who would monitor the equipment. The placement
of speed bumps issue was also raised. A concern was raised about people from outside The Landings who play tennis at the racket club as well as vendors who speed. Bob Manteiga interjected, “Something has to be done about people coming into The Landings from the outside.” In the end Bayles recommended someone submit a proposal once all of the research and study has been completed. SAFETY AND SECURITY Chairman, Neil Goldman reported delivering a package to board members which contain speed enforcement statistics. The statistics show that the program is working, and repeat offenders are nearly nonexistent. He reported additional enforcement programs could be added at the discretion of the board. Reports of verbal abuse directed at front gate personnel was also mentioned. Policies to address this issue will be discussed at another meeting. Continued on page 8

WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE CAN KILL YOU! This is why people walking on streets in The Landings should always FACE traffic. For your SAFETY do not walk with your back to traffic on our roadways. A bicycle is considered a vehicle. It moves in the same direction as traffic. As you ride with traffic it is safest if you keep to the right of the road. A bicycle rear view mirror is an essential safety tool allowing you to see traffic approaching from behind. We write this following too many dangerous observations and with concern for our Landings neighbors. Bev, Don & Katy Leidel THE LANDINGS IS NOT A PUBLIC PARK FOR DOG WALKING, JOGGING AND BICYCLING. I am concerned about the lack of enforcement in keeping people out of our private property who enter freely from our south back gate. Most of these people seem to be from Phillippi Landing and some beyond. Many walk their dogs down Starling Drive, often not picking up dog refuse. Many use our lovely circles as bicycle paths. Many run and walk through our streets. It’s not fair and it’s not right. Phillippi Landings has a metal fence. We cannot go there. Why not put up a metal coded fence at both the north and south gates? It would also further ensure us against dangerous intruders. I brought this up to an LMA board member this summer and got no response. I am writing now to alert other residents about this issue in an effort to improve our overall security. Thanks for your consideration in supporting this idea. Lou Grossman

THE LANDINGS EAGLE December 2017
President’s Column By Dick Bayles
As expected, the LMA Board adopted a 2018 budget calling for an Annual Assessment of $1,218.00 per single unit. The final costs of storm debris removal from Irma to the LMA was $8,800. Other of our associations incurred a greater expense; those in Landings North incurred significantly higher expenses. There have been several incidents in the past couple of months that involved verbal abuse and harassment of our gate staff. This bad behavior of a few reflects poorly on The Landings as a whole. All residents should recognize that the security staff have a thankless task in enforcing the Association’s rules regarding visitor entry and speed control. Efforts to improve our community include rework of the “S Island” and Eagles Point plantings, the replacement of several deteriorated street signs, and some touchingup of our entrance monuments. We have also arranged for new holiday lights that should be installed by the second week of December. A welcome back to all the snowbirds who have arrived. I wish everyone a happy holiday season. See you next year.
LMA Board Candidate Elections February 1, 2018 By Larry Lawrence, Chair of the LMA Nominating Committee The terms of four LMA Board Members expire in February of 2018. Although all four of the board members are eligible for re-election, two have decided to pursue other interests; however, they will continue to remain involved with LMA activities. In September President Bayles appointed a nominating committee comprised of Carol Furlong, Susie Golden, Michael Knupp, Larry Lawrence, and Henry Rhodes. Goals for the coming term were to seek candidates who enhance representation of younger families, improve the board gender balance, maintain needed year-round resident representation and have the skill sets needed for a strong board. The committee is recommending the following candidates: Dick Bayles, Kristy Bower, Elena Darden, Norman Olshansky and Richard Stern. The committee plans to publish the candidates’ resumes in the January issue of The Eagle. There are five candidates for the four open seats so there will be a “contested” election; i.e. those receiving the
top four highest number of votes will be elected. At the February 1, LMA Board Meeting, the Presidents of the homeowners and condominium associations will cast ballots for the election of the board members. (See accompanying article by Michael Knupp on the LMA election process) A session will be held in mid-January for the Association Presidents to meet and interview the candidates. Qualified nominations received in writing by the LMA Manager, George Niel, 30 days prior to the election will appear on the ballot sent in advance to the constituent Association Presidents. Additionally nominations will be accepted from the floor the night of the election. Please direct any questions about the election to Larry Lawrence. His contact information is in the Greenbook and on the Landings internal website. Happy Holidays! Please see a list of all current Association Presidents on page 20.

LHA Meeting Notes As discussed in last month’s report, the board approved the 2018 budget, calling for an Annual Assessment of $200.00 per property. The board expects that the Annual Assessment will stay at this level for 2019, and, barring unexpected expenses, the Annual Assessment should return to a the 2017 level.. In other business, the board approved the removal

The Annual Meeting of the Landings Homeowners Association will take place on February 8, 2018. Four seats on the Board of Directors will be up for election

ENVIRONMENTAL Committee chair, Deirdre D’Silva reported she will be attending a Sustainable Communities Workshop in late November and would share some ideas at the December LMA Meeting. A few of the topics addressed will be: Solar, Sustainable Living, Climate Change, Social Equity, and Green Building. LAKES Lakes chair, Michael Knupp reported fewer algae blooms than this time last year and the committee hopes to start work on replacing the retaining wall on the west side of Lake 3 after the new year. DRAINAGE Committee chair, Michael Knupp reported work would begin soon on the drainage Blooming This Month: BLUE DAZE Evolvulus Glomeratus As the cooler fall weather sets in, a longtime favorite just keeps on blooming. True blue flowers are hard to find in gardens. However, Evolvulus glomeratus “Blue Daze” is aptly named. This is a low growing herbaceous perennial that features fuzzy small green leaves and small true blue flowers. Plant in full sun for borders, ground covers,
issues on Flicker Field Circle, Landings Boulevard and swale maintenance in the Eagles Nest Preserve. COMMUNITY HAULING PROGRAM The community hauling program is operated on the second Wednesday of November, February, and May. If you have any questions about the program please call Harvey Greller 908-804-2300. AESTHETICS A vendor has been selected to clean the approximately 108 light posts throughout The Landings community. Depending on the price, gatehouse roofs may also be cleaned. In addition, the committee is hoping to upgrade the appearance of the front entrance. or hanging baskets. It does, however, need extra watering when our rainy season is over. Well worth the extra care as this plant attracts both butterflies and bees. Flowers are short lived, opening in the morning and dying by the end of the day Submitted by Kay Weber, Sarasota Garden Club’s Botanical Gardens Chair. SarasotagardenClub.org

ROSE’S GLUTEN-FREE PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES Rose McMullen, lives on Starling Dr., and is a sweet grandma. She chose this recipe since so many people (& kids) must eat gluten-free these days. Two of Rose’s grandsons made these Peanut Butter cookies over the summer. (One of them has celiac disease). Makes 24 cookies. Ingredients:
• 1 cup sugar • 1 cup peanut butter • 1 egg • 1 tsp vanilla extract • ½ cup crushed peanuts
Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, beat sugar, peanut butter, egg, and vanilla until well blended. 3. Form cookies using a small scoop; place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Flatten each cookie and make a criss-cross pattern with fork tines. Sprinkle with peanuts. 4. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool for 2 minutes on baking sheet. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

If all goes as planned, a new upscale steak and seafood restaurant will be open no later than early January 2018 in Siesta Village, Island business owner Chris Brown stated in a recent telephone interview. “We think there’s a void” among Key dining establishments that that type of business will fill, he said. Although Brown had narrowed down options for the company that will operate the restaurant, he declined to offer any details until after a deal had been sealed. The location will be the site of the former Blue Que Island Grill: 149 Avenida Messina. That restaurant was just down the street from The Cottage and The Hub Baja Grill, both of which Brown also owns. The Beach Club was Brown’s first venture into business in Siesta Village. A few years ago, he also bought the Siesta Market property and worked with the family behind Morton’s Gourmet Market in Southside Village to transform the grocery store and deli in the Village into Morton’s Siesta Market on Canal Road. Siesta architect Mark Smith — who worked with Brown on the design of the new restaurant — stated back in May that the transformation of the Blue Que building would be an extensive one, as the remodeling would have to comply with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood elevation standards. Through his CJB Property Development company, Brown bought the property in June 2008, paying $1.3 million for it. Long-time Key residents will recall that for a number of years, the property housed Maximo, which featured cuisine with a South African influence. This is not Chris Brown’s first attempt to create an upscale dining establishment with a focus on steaks.
THE LANDINGS EAGLE December 2017
By Rachel Brown Hackney In October 2013, the Sarasota City Commission nixed a proposed New Orleans-style redesign Brown sought for the historic Kress Building Brown had bought at 1400 Main St in downtown Sarasota. (The previous tenant was Patrick’s restaurant, which was forced out by the former property owner as part of that owner’s attempt to construct a high-rise condominium on the site.) After Brown bought the Kress Building, he made the first application ever to the city’s Neighborhood and Development Services Department for “encroachment” of the right of way. Brown’s proposal was to “wrap” the Five Points structure with “galleries.” They would provide shade for the sidewalks and room for up to 78 café tables on a second-floor covered porch overlooking Main Street. The new restaurant has not been the only project keeping Brown busy. On Nov. 7, he and business partner Mike Granthon — who manages The Hub, The Cottage and The Beach Club — became the new owners of the Key Corners Center. That complex, at the southwest intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Avenida Messina, is right across from The Hub and The Cottage. The seller was Deborah J. Houghton, whose family had owned the property since 1986, Sarasota County Property Appraiser’s Office records show. The acquisition will help considerably with the valet parking for his restaurants, Brown explained. Altogether, he will have about 150 spaces his valet service can use, he said; because the shops and the restaurant Another Broken Egg in Key Corners are closed at night, valets can double and triple park vehicles in the spaces at the plaza, Brown pointed out. “It’s really going to help the congestion. We’re trying to get the parking as organized as possible.” Continued on the next page
Continued from the previous page
Brown also noted that, of course, the valet parking is complimentary. “I’m trying to solve issues,” he added. Brown’s first order of business was cleaning up the plaza so it would look its best. Napoli’s eviction One tenant in Key Corners moved out about 10 days before Chris Brown closed on the plaza: Napoli’s, a long-time Village dining establishment known for its pizza and other Italian entrees. Napoli’s long stood where Gidget’s Coastal Provisions is located in Siesta Village, next to SKOB. According to court records from the 12th Judicial Circuit Court, Napoli’s owner, Bruno Izzo, was evicted from Key Corners, effective Oct. 30. On May 18, Timothy J. Jones of Sarasota, the sublessor of Key Corners Center, filed a complaint against Izzo, saying Izzo was $138,865.59 in arrears on rent “and other financial obligations … not inclusive of late fees, which is a default under the Sublease.” A settlement agreement between Izzo and Jones, dated Oct. 2, said the case would be dismissed with prejudice — meaning it could be refilled if the parties did not fulfill the terms. Izzo and Jones were to handle their individual attorneys’ fees and costs, it added. An order signed by Judge Frederick P. Mercurio on Oct. 4, affirming the settlement, indicated that back rent Izzo had paid over the past months
Turtle’s
would be returned to him. The amount noted in the order was $73,656.89. Jones’ lien on the property dated to June 2013, when Izzo rented the space in Key Corners, the complaint pointed out. A copy of the lease said the base rent was $6,500 per month, beginning in September 2013. (Jones waived the rent for July and August of that year, the lease said.) On July 1, 2014, the rent went up to $7,300 per month, the document noted. Then, on July 1, 2017, it climbed to $8,048. Transforming the former Jo-To property Another new restaurant is planned on Ocean Boulevard in the Village. On May 1, Jim Syprett and Jay Lancer bought the former Jo-To Japanese Restaurant property at 5218 Ocean Blvd. for $1,350,000, according to the records of the Sarasota County Property Appraiser. At the time, Syprett stated he was not certain he and Lancer would seek a new restaurant tenant, but he pointed out that because of the Siesta Key Overlay District’s zoning regulations, that would be “the most beneficial use of the property.” In early November, Syprett reported that negotiations were well underway with a restaurateur. He declined to offer any clues about those discussions, saying only, “I think the tenant will be somebody everyone will be happy to welcome to the Village.” He also could not provide an exact timeline for

the conclusion of the negotiations, he said, but he indicated that it could come shortly after the deadline for The Eagle’s December issue. While tenant talks have continued, work also has been underway to open up the front of the building’s first floor, Syprett noted; the goal is to create a patio-like atmosphere. That open area will extend about 12 feet from the corner on the south side of the structure, he added, stopping just before a side door by the driveway. Sliding glass doors will be installed around the open area, Syprett continued, to provide protection from the weather, as needed. It will be fun for diners to have a view of the activity in the Village and to be able to speak to passersby they know, he added. “I think it will look much better than it’s looked for a long time,” he said of the building. “I think it’ll be much more inviting.” According to Sarasota County permitting records, Syprett and Lancer also have invested in new plumbing and electrical equipment and a new air conditioning system, along with the new façade, at an estimated cost of $150,000. William T Enterprises, which does business as Pittman Construction of Sarasota, is the building contractor for the project, the county records note. The permit was issued on Oct. 4, the county document shows, with an expiration date of April 2, 2018. Continued on page 27

The USTA Father/Son Tournament hits Quarter Century Mark By Dee Ricapito The 2018 Father Son Tournament has come to a close in its 25th year here at The Landings. We can boast it was our biggest tournament ever with 47 teams vying for the coveted USTA Gold Ball in each of their categories, (Ultra, Super Senior and Senior). The first senior competition at The Landings dates back to 1993. Six years later, in 1999, the Super Senior tournament made its annual home here. Last year, 2016, the Ultra Seniors (father’s over 80) joined the ranks playing their tournament in November, always the week before Thanksgiving. Kevin Lechlitner, LRC General Manager said, “It’s truly a professional event since there are only four National Father/Son Championship Tennis Tournaments in the United States: • A grass court in Long Island, NY • A hard court in California
Kevin introducing Jim Goldman from Illinois, to his Landings host, Jim Goldman. Jim and his dad Allan went on to win the Ultra Seniors Division.
Jeffrey Cummings a Landings teen resident hit some balls and got a few pointers from Casey Cleveland, and his Dad Don Cleveland. They played for the Super Senior Division Championship that lasted 31/2 hours only to lose in a tiebreak. During the ceremony Casey dedicated his Silver Ball Award to Jeffrey!
Racquet Club News |President’s Report By Dick Bayles The annual Senior, Super Senior and Ultra Father/Son Clay Championships, held on the week before Thanksgiving, set a new record for team attendance. With an increase in the Ultra entrants to 12 teams, a total of 47 teams competed – an increase of 11 over 2016. Mother nature cooperated by providing superb tennis weather. We had two new champions in the Ultra and Super Senior events and an unprecedented number of three set matches in the main draw. I thank the many volunteers – both at the courts and off. They make this event the premier event on the circuit according to the players. The 2018 Annual Assessment was mailed in the second week of November. If you are a member and have not received it, please call the Club and speak with Kevin. At its November board meeting, a plan for replacing the canopies on the pool deck and Court 5, some of which were destroyed by hurricane Irma, was approved. All of the canopies at those locations will be replaced with structures capable of withstanding a Cat 4 hurricane. I wish for everyone to enjoy the upcoming holidays. Back to you next year!

THE LANDINGS EAGLE December 2017
• An indoor in New Jersey • The clay court here at The Landings” Over the years we have been privileged to see the best teams from Canada to California and this year, even Hawaii. Many sons are former college players some played on the Pro Tour. Also, this year we had fathers that have been ranked in Brazil and in the Philippines. The players and their families enjoyed the camaraderie with their host families, at the pot luck luncheon, then the evening player’s party held on Thursday at the Landings Clubhouse. It’s always a big hit when players are mingling with each other and host families, too. As Kevin Noted: “These Championships link together generations of families and friends, truly defining tennis as a lifetime sport.”
The Dancers played in the Super Senior 70’s this year and many previous years. Dean and his dad, Douglas enjoyed it so much Dean actually lives in The Landings now.
Senior Champions (60’s Division), Brett and Jerry Morse Karzen, with Spencer, who was a ball boy, visiting his grandfather, Norm Olshansky.
|Manager’s Report
By Kevin Lechlitner
Last month the LRC hosted the USTA National Father/Son Clay Court Championships for the 25th consecutive year. In my 12 years being involved with the tournaments here, this was the largest turnout of players I have ever seen. Like a well-oiled machine, the host families met the challenge in stride. Thank you to everyone that took part and especially to Ralph and Dee Ricapito for organizing the lunch. As usual, the members really outdid themselves with the player lunch. The sheer volume of food was quite impressive. Having hosts really sets our tournament apart from others around the country. Thanks again for your help in making this a special tournament for all the players. The Annual Holiday Dinner Dance is Sunday, December 3rd in the Lakeside Clubhouse with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Sammy J and a saxophone player will be the live entertainers again this year. If you came either of the last three years, you know how amazing they are. James Riegel from Black Tie Catering is back again with another delicious menu. The menu specifics are posted in the Tennis Pro Shop with the signup sheet. The cost is $28 per person. Hopefully you have already signed up as it is only a few days away. Please call the office to check on availability for the party. Most of our seasonal members are back and the activity level has certainly picked up at the Club. Beginning in January, it will only get busier for the next few months. As you can imagine, on certain days of the week, parking is at a premium. Thursday mornings seem to be the most hectic. Along with the morning court reservations, we have three exercise classes, Watercolor painting, a MahJongg class and potentially two home league matches. In an effort to alleviate some of the parking strain during the morning hours, I would like to encourage members who live close to the Club and have the ability to walk or ride a bike over to do so. Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.
Landings Racquet Club Hosts National Tennis Championships By Trebor Britt Forty-seven Father/Son doubles teams from 23 States and Brazil gathered for the 2017 USTA National Senior Super/Senior and Ultra/Senior Father/Son Clay Court Championships at The Landings. Fathers in their 60s competed with their sons in the Senior Championship and fathers in their 70s competed in the Super Senior Championship and fathers in their 80s competed in the Ultra Senior Championship. An interesting twist during the tournament would involve Ultra Senior player, Alan Goldman. His son was surprised to learn that his 80 year old father left his favorite racket in the Newark, New Jersey airport and would be playing with a demo racket he borrowed from The Landings Racquet Club. Michael Stewart (75) of Palm Desert Surprisingly, they reached the finals and after California returns a serve winning the championship, one of the first things Alan did was purchase that demo racket, now his new favorite. FINAL RESULTS Alan & James Goldman defeated Ron & Jeff Tonidandel 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the Ultra Senior (80s) Championship match. Mike & Andrew Stewart defeated Don & Casey Cleveland 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1) in the Super Senior (70s) Championship match. Jerry & Brett Morse-Karzen defeated Givaldo & Thiago Barbosa 6-2, 6-4 in the Senior (60s) Championship match.

Again I want to thank Kevin, John, Barbara, Deb, Collin, Paul, Lou, Rudy, Angie, Alice, Gary and our great grounds team Edvin, Edwardo and Yordanis for their passion and hard work leading up to and during the week. A big thank you as well to the many volunteers who made

the week’s activities such a success. The luncheon was absolutely delicious! (I’ve already asked for recipes for some of the salads.) Maybe one day my son Austin (who is only 7) and I will be able to play the event. It was interesting to watch the tactics and strategy of the teams. It was old school and new school tennis combined on both sides of the net. The dads had great combinations of touch and feel with drop shots, lobs, slices and flatter ground strokes. The sons had the powerful modern forehand top spin shots and big serves. All of the successful teams were able to take control of the net in the big moments. I was particularly
impressed with the poise of the dads on the court, especially at the net when they were consistently getting attacked with aggressive shots targeted right at them. As usual, it came down to the teams that could hold serve consistently. What a great week of tennis! I’m looking forward to a great December. Don’t forget the Round Robin on December 2nd from 2 – 4 p.m. as well as the Pro Exhibition afterward from 4 – 5 p.m. Sign up in the tennis shop. See you on the courts!

A Merry Year Is Born By Dee Ricapito
Expense of Midnight Pass parking lot raises questions
Another year is ending, but some good things are pending. Don’t be hard on yourself in 2018 when things seem tough - You have not just one extra year but a lifetime to keep trying till you get it right. There is always something old in the New Year especially in Sarasota County where half the population is older than age 50. Aging is a fact of life and we’re all aging, even youngsters every day. Life is like the clouds in the sky, it’s ever changing, and the pace seems faster in this technology age; we are living longer some say, up to 30 years longer. So, take some time to enjoy reminiscing on the year that’s just ended and toasting in a new year full of expectations. We can let this coming year be better than all the others. Instead of making a mile-long list of things you would like to do (probably the same ones that got pushed off from the year before; i.e. lose weight, drink less, save money, learn a new language, etc.), make some resolutions that are good for you, like: do some things you have always wanted to do but couldn’t find the time; call an old friend; don’t make a promise you think you can’t keep; smile more; walk tall with good posture (you’ll look 10 years younger and thinner). Learn to give “sixty” and take “forty”. Lastly say, “I love you” often... They’re the sweetest words ever. “Cheers to a New Year‼ And another chance to get it right.”
Publishers Note: This property had the promise of adding close to 160 needed parking spots for this part of the Key. With the east end of the property designated as wetland and hammock, along with retaining the old SKUA building, the parking spots are now reduced to 50 plus.

Based on comments from Sarasota County commissioners on Oct. 11, the county’s interim director of the Public Works Department raised a few eyebrows with the estimates he provided them for transforming the county parcel at 6647 S. Midnight Pass Road into a parking lot. The cost of using shell, Spencer Anderson wrote in a memo, would be about $507,000, while asphalt would raise that to approximately $530,000. With either price, Anderson’s memo pointed out that only 39 new spaces would be created. With no changes, the memo noted, the site in its current configuration could “accommodate 14 vehicles with minimal cost.” That parking area, as envisioned by staff, would not include any provisions for a pull-off for the Siesta Key Breeze trolley, a shelter, signage, lighting or security enhancements, the memo pointed out. Why the half-a-million dollar-plus expense for a lot with just extra 39 parking spaces? First, Anderson provided details about the size of the parcel, which actually is property of the
THE LANDINGS EAGLE December 2017
county’s Public Utilities Department. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has been using part of it as a training area, commissioners have mentioned, but Sheriff Tom Knight has told staff his office no longer will have any interest in the site by the end of this year. The parcel is about 1.84 acres, Anderson’s memo said, with 60 feet of frontage on Midnight Pass Road; the property is 732 feet deep. The far eastern end abuts Peacock Road, the memo noted. The front area — with the building the Sheriff’s Office has used — is 315 feet deep, and it is 88 feet wide at the rear. The structure is about 70 feet by 40 feet, the memo said. If the 39-vehicle lot were created, the memo explained, the Public Utilities Department could continue to use a groundwater tank on the site. That tank is about 100 feet by 100 feet, the memo noted. “The rear section of the parcel is 3 to 4 feet lower than the remainder of the parcel and wet much of the year,” the memo continued. “County environmental staff visited the site and advised that the rear section contains a low quality wetland and hammock,” the memo added. “If there is a desire to look at the rear section for parking,” the memo noted, “construction planning must include wetland/hammock delineation,” along with a topographical survey and a mitigation plan. Continued on the next page
Continued from the previous page
The cost estimates for the larger new parking area incorporate a wooden shelter for a trolley stop, a turnaround for the Breeze, LED lighting, wayfinding signs and the preservation of “large trees,” the memo said. The budget estimates include the standard county project management and internal service charges; design, engineering and permitting work; and construction, in-house inspection of that work and a contingency fee, the memo pointed out. “Please note that these estimates are for planning level purposes only and subject to final project details,” the memo concluded. Another page of the Oct. 5 paid parking options report that the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department staff provided to the County Commission showed a map with 16 parcels staff had researched for possible parkand-ride lot locations to supplement spaces at Siesta Public Beach. The map showing those parcels also noted the county property at 6647 S. Midnight Pass Road and county-owned land on Oakmont Place that will be available after the Siesta Key Wastewater Treatment Plant has been decommissioned. The potential park-and-ride lots were all within 7 miles of the beach park, the memo pointed out. Staff had found them on the Realtor’s Multiple Listing Service. Most of them were vacant, the memo added. Of the 16 privately owned parcels, four had been withdrawn from the market after staff began its
research, the memo said. Additionally, the time set aside for offers had expired on another four, the memo explained. Of those still available, the map’s legend said the highest price was $2.8 million for a 0.79-acre lot on Ocean Bouelvard. The next highest figure was $2.6 million. That was the asking price for both a parcel in downtown
Sarasota and one on Central Sarasota Parkway, south of Sarasota Square Mall. The former is 1.68 acres, the map noted, while the other is 1.06 acres. Staff offered no other details about those properties, though the memo said further investigation would ensue if the board asked staff to take that step. The board did not.

The Lobster Pot continued to be open throughout their recent remodel Work on the façade for the iconic Lobster Pot, located in the heart of the Village, was completely unplanned but necessary after a truck plowed into the patio in front of the restaurant back on July 4, 2017. Co-owner, Glen Medeiros recounts the harrowing experience and counts his blessings. His son and partner in the business, Tony, had given him the day off for the July Fourth holiday. “Normally, I work on Tuesdays,” he noted, “and I sit at that table where that truck went through,” placing orders. “So I am blessed,” he said. “I am blessed.” The crash occurred around 9:45 a.m., based on reports. The driver apparently had a medical problem. The truck was headed north on Ocean Boulevard, reports said, when it veered into the Lobster Pot. Not only was he spared injury, he pointed out, but so were bystanders. Normally, Medeiros said, at that time of morning, 20 to 25 people are lined up in front of the restaurant as they wait in line to buy treats from the adjacent
Meaney’s Mini Donuts. “Luckily, they were on the opposite side,” in front of Morton’s Siesta Market, he noted. Even though he was supposed to be taking off July 4, Medeiros continued, he had decided to come in anyway and help out his son. “It was a pretty scary situation,” he added of the truck’s crashing into the long-time Siesta Village dining establishment. The restaurant, noted winner of “Taste of Sarasota,” brings the New England tradition of excellence to Sarasota with live lobsters harvested from Bar Harbor and Boothbay, Maine along with many New England style dishes.
A new awning will complete the Lobster Pot’s fresh façade
