KID’S CORNER
We’ve received feedback from LRC members that they were interested in a new format for the LRC Holiday Party, one that is more inclusive of both singles and couples. So, join us for a Holiday Cocktail Party with festive hors d’oeurves, sweet treats and music by DJ Karolina! When and where is it? • It will be held in the LRC Lakeside room on Wednesday, December 11th from 6-9 PM. What’s different this year? • Instead of a formal sit down dinner, it will be a catered cocktail party with festive hors d’oeuvres and sweet treats. • The cost will be $20 per person.
• Because it is a less structured event, more people will be able to attend, giving you more mingling opportunities to visit your neighbors. What’s the same? • We will still have music and dancing! We have found a great DJ who will play cocktail music for the first part of the evening, then it’s out on the dance floor to rock the night away to your favorites and classics that will get everyone out on the floor. Don’t worry, there will be some slow songs too, and maybe even a bit of salsa! Let us know your favorite tunes… • This remains a BYOC- bring your own cocktail event, so please bring your

LMA elections are conducted on a staggered basis, with five of nine seats being up in odd years and the remaining four seats in even years. However, five seats will be up for election in 2020 as one seat was filled by appointment in 2019 and, therefore, is up for election in 2020. The LMA election will take place at its annual meeting on February 6, 2020, and the deadline for names to be placed on the ballot is January 7, 2020. While the LMA has established a nominating committee to recommend candidates, anyone wishing to appear on the ballot may submit their nomination in writing prior to January 7, 2020. Nominations are also accepted from the floor at the annual meeting but will not appear on the ballot. Votes are cast at the annual meeting by the association presidents or their designated agents. Each president casts a number of votes that is; number of units in their association times the number of candidates on the ballot (in the case of 2020, five). Their votes are cumulative, i.e., they may be split among the candidates in any amount provided the total doesn’t exceed their allotted number of votes.
favorite drink, wine or beverage. • Just like a cocktail party in your home, there will be cozy spaces for quiet conversations and plenty of space for groups to gather. • It’s time to pull out your fun and fancy party clothes and let us see how you “clean up”! How do I sign-up? • The LRC will have a signup sheet at the front desk. We anticipate this event will sell out, as space is limited, so be sure to sign up early! • You will also have a chance to request your favorite songs on the signup sheet, so just let us know. We hope to see you there!!

President’s Column Thanksgiving was a time to reflect, enjoy family and be thankful for all we have as Americans and residents of The Landings. Indeed we have a lot about which to be thankful. It is the holiday season and on behalf of the LMA Board, I want to wish all a very happy, healthy, enjoyable and meaningful holidays, and New Year. Many thanks to Doug Day and his other volunteers who organized a very successful Halloween event, enjoyed by all who participated. Speaking of holidays, plan to attend the Landings Holiday Party on December 11th. More details are on the front page of this edition of The Eagle. Space is limited so sign up ASAP at the Landings Racquet Club. You will be pleased to know that the LMA Board adopted the new budget for 2020 and will not be increasing the annual assessment. A special shout out to Dick Bayles, our treasurer and his finance committee for their excellent stewardship of our funds. Join me and other Landings residents for a bike ride at Myakka State Park. We will meet at 10 a.m. on Sunday, December 8th, at the LRC and caravan to the park for a morning ride followed by lunch. See details in this issue of The Eagle. We are pleased to report that negotiations with D.R. Horton Developers regarding their new development called “The Landing,” has been completed. In order to avoid confusion between their community and ours and in recognition of our Common Law Trademark, they have agreed to change the name of their new community to “Bay Landing”
and refrain from any marketing, signage, or promotions using their former name. Cudos to the LRC for sponsoring another spectacular national USTA father/son tennis tournament. This year produced the largest number of participants in the history of the event. There is still time to submit nominations for the LMA board. Elections are in February but the deadline for submitting information about nominees for publication in The Eagle, is December 15th. For more information contact Paul Weiner, Henry Rhodes or me. There is more development going on outside our gates. New stores are under construction in the Landings Shopping Center and it was recently announced that a fitness center is planned to go into the former Office Depot location. Outside the south gate, construction has also begun on new condos at Phillipi Landings. Engineering work has been underway on the first phase of our project to resurface roads in The Landings. Pardon any inconvenience to residents and guests that this important work may cause. If you haven’t explored the Landings website recently, go to the resident login and check out the new blogs, vendor recommendations, photos, updated searchable directory of residents, calendar of events and much more. You can also find the Green Book, LMA policies, forms and documents on the website. thelandingsofsarasota.com Norman Olshansky, President Landings Management Association
The Landings Free College By Irv Kushner This year’s Landings Free College classes will be held again on Thursday afternoons at 2:30, January through March. Ralph Ricapito and Irv Kushner are busily working on the presentations. There will talks by a number of our neighbors in The Landings, several fascinating speakers from the outside world, and repeat appearances by some of the outstanding speakers of previous years. January 2, 2020, We represent a veritable United Nations here at The Landings, with literally dozens of residents who were born abroad, in dozens of countries. We will hear about many of their life stories, often fascinating. January 9,2020, You may have noticed that a significant number of our fellow Landings residents have achieved ripe old ages. Dr. Ben Mayne will discuss what’s involved in achieving longevity. (I understand that living in The Landings helps.) On that day we will also honor Jack Kahgan, now 100 years old. He and Ralph started the Roundtable Discussion Group, a precursor to the Free College a decade ago. January 16, 2020, a representative of the Sheriff’s office will tell us about how to deal with the challenge of identity theft. January 23, 2020, Infectious Disease, a little known medical specialty, plays an important role in safeguarding our health. Dr. Manuel Gordillo, an ID specialist who lives in The Landings, will describe what ID specialists do, and the challenges they face.
January 30, 2020, Allison Small, will present Canada 201, further informing us about our neighbor to the north.
A sneak peek of the ensuing months: Brian McCarthy, president, Military Officers Association of America, Sarasota, and Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret.) will describe the tremendous importance of our military veterans and the differences they have made for our lives. We expect to learn from the Sheriff’s office about the challenge of identity theft, and what we can do about it. Inge Stanton will tell us about her childhood in Nazi Germany and her visit to her home town last year. The Free College will have an in depth discussion about the birds of The Landings. Also to follow is a discussion of Sarasota’s Forty Carrots Preschool and Parenting Center which helps people be better parents. Repeat speakers will include: Frank Pipers, who will, in his inimitable way, illuminate a number of fascinating aspects of the world of science. Dick Bayles will tell how to get the most of Apple’s iOS-based iPhone and iPad devices, and Irv Kushner will take us on a tour of the world, visiting irresistible statues that people can’t refrain from touching or kissing. Last but not least, we will be featuring the musicians of The Landings.

DECEMBER 2019
LMA meeting notes LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky announced the following during his president’s report: • Phillipi Shores is adding a new residential tower and new businesses are opening and will be added to the Landings Shopping Center. • NOTE: The Holiday Party has been changed to December 11. The event includes beverages, music and catered food. • The Annual, National FatherSon Clay Court Championship Tournament will showcase a historic number of team entries this year. • Olshansky acknowledged the hard work of both the Safety & Security Committee and the Landscaping Committee and thanked Doug Day for the outstandingly successful Halloween event. • Everyone was encouraged to look over all the new content on the website.
FINANCE REPORT Treasurer Dick Bayles forecasted end of year spending would be approximately $6,000 under budget. The only budget category significantly over budget was roads. Bayles reported only one remaining delinquent account, and he expects to receive payment in full.

assessment of $1,281 per unit will remain unchanged from 2019. A motion was made to adopt the proposed budget and after a brief discussion the motion passed unanimously.
LAKES Co-Chairs Michael Knupp and Roger Kidder reported erosion work will begin soon on Lake 6 (Bay View). Residents can expect noise related to the work which will take about two weeks to complete. The committee apologizes in advance for any inconvenience. Thank you to the volunteers who helped with the plants in Lake 3. An estimated 80% of the plants have survived. Saltwater appears to have intruded into some of the lakes closest to the bay. This intrusion will likely cause some corrosion of the fountain lights hardware and may cause electrical shorts. As a result, they may have to replace them with non-corrosive more expensive fixtures. The headwall work at Lake 1 has been completed by the county. The final step of the project will be the replacement of a street light by Florida Power and Light. Special thanks to Paul Weiner and Hostetler Irrigation for quickly connecting the irrigation lines to water the new sod replaced by the county.
MANAGER’S REPORT
DRAINAGE
Landings Manager George Neil reported the following: • Processed usual invoices. • Monitoring all Florida Power and Light issues related to the needed street lamp repair at the north entrance. • The gazebo trash container lid will be repaired again. • Continuing to receive contractor bids from landscaping companies. • Maintaining the community hauling project list. Twenty one residents are participating so far. • Notified The Landings insurance agent of the accident on Kestral Park South. • Filed an incident report regarding the curb damage caused by a school bus. • Filed reports on water and drainage issues which need Sarasota County repairs. • Continued daily drive-through inspections of The Landings development.
Co-Chairs Michael Knupp and Roger Kidder reported working with the Roads Committee to hire engineers of Santee Corporation to rebuild Peregrine Point Drive. The work will include surveying, roadway core sampling and drainage system evaluation. Once complete, the engineer will provide bid documents for the construction work. Flooding issues on Camino Real are being evaluated and a solution plan is being developed. Depressions in two roads was determined to be either water line or sanitary sewer issues. Work orders have been assigned by the County Utility Department. The semi-annual maintenance of ditches leading to the bay will begin soon.
2020 BUDGET
A proposal was submitted by the development company which included everything The LMA requested with the exception of a few minor changes. They requested 6-months to implement all the changes verses the 3-months originally requested by LMA. Additionally, they requested LMA pay for their HOA attorney to review all the documents. After discussion there was no objection to moving forward.
Treasurer Dick Bayles announced that since the proposed budget was published in the November issue of The Eagle, an additional $10,000 expense was located. After consulting with key leaders they decided instead of increasing the annual assessment, the finance committee would move forward with the proposed budget and during the next fiscal year look for ways to underspend to make up the $10,000 deficit. The annual

“THE LANDING” DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
COMMUNITY HAULING Harvey Greiler informed the board Sarasota County proposed implementing the Community Hauling Program only once per year, on March 17. For now, the April date will be canceled and the once a year pickup will be evaluated to see if the demand would warrant an additional date.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE Paul Weiner reported five of the nine board members’ terms will expire and two of those will not run for re-election. At this time there are two candidates who have agreed to run for the board vacancies and additional candidates are being interviewed. The submission of additional candidates is welcomed.
SAFETY AND SECURITY Chairman Michael Knupp reported that after continuing problems with the Traffic Hawk equipment, a demand letter has been sent to the company. A town hall meeting will be scheduled after the first of the year to discuss security issues that would affect annual assessment fees. This would include discussion of an additional roving patrol, making two of the gates more secure and the possibility of adding speed bumps to key locations. Additionally, several gates have been repeatedly damaged and repaired recently. As a result of video evidence, the Security Committee is in the process of sending letters to those responsible. They will be asked to pay for the cost of repairs.
TRUCKS BLOCKING GATES On behalf of the Maintenance Committee David Jacaruso proposed additional signage as a solution to vendors attempting to enter The Landings through the north gate, causing substantial blockages and delays. The recurring blockages have caused excessive delays for residents and creates the need for the assistance of someone to help truck drivers negotiate and get to the main gate. In addition, Amazon prime drivers have decided to just leave packages at the gatehouse. After discussion, the committee was tasked to reconfigure the language and height of the sign and bring a new proposal back to the board.
LANDSCAPING Landscaping chair Paul Weiner inspected the Nature Trail along with the landscaping contractor. The contractor suggested raising the trail with two inches of additional shell. The additional
height would keep the trail dry during high tide. A resident of The Landings, who is a road engineer and former head of the Department of Transportation in Colorado, was also asked to look at the problem and offer suggestions. Weiner has also been soliciting bids from new landscaping and irrigation companies as the current contractors work over the summer was not satisfactory. Weiner also reported the following: • Zone 5 repairs were completed near the front gate. • The main line and multiple sprinkler heads were repaired at Flicker Field. • Irrigation heads were repaired at the Peregrine Circle, north island and main entrance. • Mulch was laid down at Eagles point. • Irrigation will be installed for the new sod at the north gate. With the help of Nick Pocock the committee is working on the elimination of Brazilian Pepper seedlings and residual sprouts. Half The Landings will be mulched in December and the other half in January.
ROADS Committee Chairman Rudy Blohm reported the engineering proposal by Santee Corp. for the Peregrine Point Drive and Peregrine Point Circle work was accepted and signed. In addition, a geotechnical evaluation of the road, road base and water level under the road has been completed.
ENVIRONMENTAL Committee chair Maralyn Kaufman-David, Ph.D reported 80% of the plantings installed on Lake 3 are thriving. The plantings are crucial to restoring the ecosystem using natural methods. LHA President Bill Whitman sent an email to homeowners whose property includes shoreline along Lake 1. The email informs owners about the Ring of Responsibility and invites them to a meeting in January to get a consensus and potentially develop a plan to move forward on the initiative.
Robert Manteiga continues to provide photos and articles highlighting birds at The Landings. As a result, interest is growing to compile a bird list. Residents are encouraged to submit any bird sightings. The insecticide and weed control test island on Flicker Field appears no different than the other islands at that location after 15 months with no treatment. The important project will continue. Ways to work with landscape service providers to expand the environmentally sound balance of pesticide/weed control is being explored.
MAINTENANCE Maintenance Committee chair Ron Pierce reported the progress of several projects. • The Gazebo garbage receptacle repair will be completed soon. • Two turtles were removed from main roads and safely redirected. • An unusual amount of roadkill was removed from the main roads. • Several potholes were filled and all curbs at the north gate were painted. • Three large construction trucks were escorted in and out of The Landings.
ONGOING PROBLEMS • Blockages and delays caused by trucks attempting to enter the landings through the north gate continues to be a problem. The GPS system is giving them faulty directions. Additional signage, yellow striping, and strategically placed traffic delineators are being suggested to the LMA Board, as a solution.
BEES A member of the Sarasota Beekeepers Association may attend a future board meeting to discuss the possibility of placing hives in a key Landings location.
GOOD AND WELL DONE Doug Day and his team were thanked and praised for their work on a tremendously successful Halloween event.

Racquet Club News |President’s Report
As noted in another article in this issue of The Landings Eagle, the format of the annual club holiday celebration has changed. Instead of the sitdown formal meal, it will replace the Wednesday, December 11, Happy Hour and provide catered appetizers, entertainment, and dancing. In recent years, the attendance at the holiday event has steadily decreased. I’m certain this year’s will host a full crowd.
The work replacing the covered walkways has been completed, except for some drainage work that will be done after the holidays. Visitors during the dark hours will notice vastly improved lighting. We have been wrestling with a leak in the spa area for several months and, over the past month intensified the search for the problem. As of this writing, we are planning to shut the spa down in the first week of December to correct the problem. It will involve tearing out the deck between the spa and the north edge of the pool deck. Hopefully, it will be out of commission for only a couple of days. We had a record turnout of teams for the Father/Son National Clay championships – our Club remains the tour’s favorite, drawing more than

|Manager’s Report Last month, the LRC hosted the USTA National Father/Son Clay Court Championships for the 27th consecutive year. The turnout of players this year was amazing! We had a total of 58 teams registered to play. In comparison, the largest combined draws of the other three national championships had a total of 38 teams. That just goes to show you how popular our tournament is. A big part of that is how friendly and welcoming our membership is to the players. The ambassadors that the Club provides adds a personal touch that the players don’t receive anywhere else. Thank you to everyone that took part and especially to Ralph and Dee Ricapito for organizing all the ambassadors. The members always prepare an impressive quantity of food for the players’ lunch. Thanks again for your help in making this a special tournament for all the participants. We are reinventing the Annual Holiday Dinner Dance this year. It is scheduled on Wednesday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m. in the Lakeside Clubhouse. Instead of a formal sit-down dinner, this year will be more like a cocktail party. high-end appetizers and there will be a live DJ for the entertainment. The menu specifics are posted in the Tennis Pro Shop with the signup sheet. The cost is $20 per person. The deadline to register is Sunday, December 8th. I hope to see you there! You should be receiving your annual assessment mailing very soon if it hasn’t arrived already. For your convenience, we have included a return envelope in the mailing. If you haven’t received it by early December, please contact me in the Tennis Pro Shop. The annual assessment is due on or before January 1st and will be considered late on February 1st. To avoid late fees and interest, please be sure your payment arrives before the end of January. Most of our seasonal members are back and the activity level has certainly picked up at the club. Beginning in January, it will only get busier for the next few months. As you can imagine, on certain days of the week, parking is at a premium. Thursday mornings seem to be the most hectic. Along with the morning court reservations, we have four exercise classes, Watercolor painting, a MahJongg class and potentially two home league matches. In an effort to alleviate some of the parking strain during the morning hours, I would like to encourage members who live close to the Club and have the ability to walk or ride a bike over to do so. Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.
By Adrian “Mo” Moghina
As the temperatures drop and we enjoy cooler mornings and evenings it is really important that before you hit a tennis ball that your body is properly warmed up to avoid injury. The tennis ball is also not as lively when the temperature is cooler (under 65 degrees), which affects your rhythm and timing. So, in the mornings and evenings you must take this into consideration and be ready to adjust by bending your knees more and take more steps to get into position because the ball won’t arrive with the same speed or depth as it does in warmer temperatures. Great ways to warm up properly: • If you can, walk, bike or even do a lite jog from your residence to the tennis courts. • But if you have to drive, when you get to the courts, a lite jog around the court will help loosen and warm up your legs, hips and lower back. • One of my favorite ways to warm up those areas is to do the carioca drill, which is the cross stepping drill which helps to warm up both the upper body and lower body. • Stretching your shoulders and arms is important by doing arm circles and cross body shoulder stretches. • The best way to wake up your eyes, hands and feet is to start with mini tennis. This will also force you not to squeeze the racquet too tight as you start to get warmed up. Don’t miss the Holiday Round Robin Social and Exhibition Friday, December 13 at 2 p.m. followed by cocktails and plenty of holiday cheer. Sign up in the tennis shop. See you on the courts!

A few of this year’s headliners include: Amb. Kathleen Stevens, former U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Korea, will explore how U.S. alliances in Asia are working in light of growing Chinese power; James Baker, a director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism, will address national security in the light of artificial intelligence; Peter Georgescu, vice chairman of New York Presbyterian Hospital and director of Just Capital, will
examine how to end income inequality; Dr. Ray Takeyh, who holds the Hasib J. Sabbagh Chair in Middle East Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations and previously served as a senior advisor on Iran at the State Department, will tackle the U.S.-Iran conflict; Dr. Susan A. MacManus, a University of South Florida Distinguished University Professor Emerita, will discuss changing voter demographics and the proliferation of news sources and concerns about “fake news”; and Dr. Celeste Wallander, president and CEO of the U.S. Russia Foundation, will provide an insider look at the Obama Administration’s foreign policy strategy.
Beth Cotner is SILL’s new president. We’re delighted to launch the 49th season of SILL,” she says. “From a small startup operation years ago, SILL now offers five venues and, last year, attracted more than 45,000 attendees. and our Global Issues program committee, chaired by Bob Deutsch, has booked some impressive speakers for 2020. We’re looking forward to an outstanding mix of returning and new speakers. Ten speakers will be new to the SILL audiences, offering perspectives that have not been heard here before. Another seven are returning speakers, back by popular demand. And, for the first time, SILL will host a husband and wife speaking jointly. Jessica and Sean McFate’s topic ‘Battles of the Future: How Technology replaces Traditional Weapons of War’ will be an exciting lecture.” Cotner adds that, in addition to programs available during the day in both Sarasota and Venice, the expanded Lakewood Ranch program, offered in the evenings, is an alternative for those who can’t get to the daytime lectures. And, for those with hearing challenges, Cotner says that SILL is offering real time captions during the Wednesday morning lectures at First Church in downtown Sarasota. SILL’s Global Issues lectures are 40 to 50 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of audience questions. The lectures are

Beth Cotner named President of SILL By Diana Colson The Landings own Beth Cotner has recently been named president of Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning (SILL). This outstanding organization brings internationally renowned experts to the Sarasota area to discuss a vast range of domestic and global issues. The 2020 season, named the “Global Issues” series, runs January 7 to March 27, and features 72 programs in Sarasota, Venice and Lakewood Ranch. Speakers explore dozens of topics, including the U.S. role in the world, income inequality, climate change, migration, artificial intelligence, and topical issues in Latin America, Asia, Europe, Russia and Iran. Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning also offers its very popular Monday Music series, chaired by Edward Alley. Before becoming president of SILL, Beth Cotner served on the board for 10 years, where she was Director of Programming, managing the committee that recruits 24 speakers per year for the area’s 3-month seminar, which focuses on global issues. Says Cotner: “From a small startup operation years ago, SILL now offers five venues and, last year, attracted more than 45,000 attendees… Our Global Issues Program Committee, chaired by Bob Deutsch, has booked some impressive speakers for 2020.” The speakers are indeed an impressive group! A few of this year’s headliners include: Ambassador Kathleen Stevens, former U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Korea, will explore how U.S. alliances in Asia are working in light of growing Chinese power; James Baker, a director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism, will address national security in the light of artificial intelligence; Peter Georgescu, retired chairman of Young and Rubican, will examine how to end income inequality; Dr. Besides those headliners, other speakers are scheduled, some new, some returning with perspectives that have not been heard here before. For the first time SILL will host a husband and wife speaking jointly. Jessica and Sean McFate’s topic ‘Battle of the Future; How Technology Replaces Traditional Weapons of War’ promises to be thought provoking. SILL’s Global Issues lectures are 40 to 50 minutes in length, followed by 30 minutes of audience questions. Sarasota Lectures are held
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. at First Church, 104 S. Pineapple. Venice Lectures are held on Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m., and Fridays at 10 a.m. at Venice Community Center, 326 S. Nokomis Ave. Lakewood Ranch Lectures are held on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. at Cornerstone Church, 14306 Covenant Way. Doors open 40 minutes prior to the start of each lecture. Newly added last year is a venue on Longboat Key where Global Issues lectures are telecast with a one-week lag. Also, For the hearing impaired, Sarasota offers real-time captions during the Wednesday morning lectures at First Church in downtown Sarasota. To learn about the program in more detail, visit www.sillsarasota.org. For more information, call 941.365.6404. SILL is a non-profit organization. It is guided by an all-volunteer board committed to modest prices and enhanced outreach. As board member and now president for two years, Beth Cotner is one of many volunteers who has held to this vision. 2020 season subscriptions are a mere $85 for 12 lectures. Single lecture tickets are $10. With a lifetime career in money management, Cotner knows how to handle finances. Her stellar career has included being Chief Investment Officer of Putnam Large Cap Growth, handling $75 billion in assets, managing large mutual funds and pension funds. Beth Cotner grew up in Northern California in Crescent City, a small town that was wiped out by a tsunami in 1964. She earned her B.A. in International Studies from Ohio State University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in three years. She then went on to earn a MBA in International Business from George Washington University. She has had frequent appearances on CNBC, appeared on Wall Street Week, and has been featured in Fortune, The New York Times, and Barron’s. She met her second husband on a blind date, an event arranged by Rita Spitz of The Landings. Handsome Jack Alogna was so impressed with this amazing lady, that on their second date, he invited her to go to Kenya! (Did she go? You betcha! Travel is one of her things. She’s been to 93 countries and all 50 states.) They both like to travel, and soon will be going to see the Oberammergau Passion Play in Germany, a play that is only performed once every ten years. Beth Cotner plays tennis at The Landings on both the 3.5 and 4.0 teams. She is duplicate bridge Life Master and belongs to a book group. Besides SILL she volunteers at Personal Estate Liquidators (PEL) where all sales go to benefit youth. Beth Cotner has three wonderful stepdaughters, courtesy of Jack Alogna. The couple shares a Golden-Doodle named Juno, and a cat called Jesse. Both pets travel with them by car when they spend summers in Cape Cod or go hiking in Blowing Rock. At The Landings, they inhabit a house on Kestral Park Lane.

“BIRDS IN OUR BACKYARD” IT’S IN OUR BACKYARD… BUT IS IT NATIVE? By Maralyn Kaufman-David and Robert Manteiga Co-editors Photos by Robert Manteiga

incubation, the male delivers food to the nesting female. Nanday parakeets are social birds and travel in foraging flocks for wide variety of items, like fruits, berries, nuts, seeds, flowers, nectar, and fresh shoots and buds of certain plants. Nandays have a grating chatter when perched. When in flight, they have a very loud, high-pitched, repetitive screeching (kree-ah...kree-ah) followed by three or four much lower, abrupt (klaak) calls. Free from cages and ‘official’ residents of Florida…we will add this beautiful bird to our Landings Bird List!

CUISINE OF NORTHEAST THAILAND I distinctly remember the first time I arrived at the Sarasota airport from chilly New England (to visit family in The Landings) and saw and heard the trees full of “green parrots” –I assumed the birds were native, and for sure they were a storybook tropical greeting for a first-timer in Sarasota. Earlier this fall, Carolyn Aaron (a resident in The Landings) sent me a photo of this same type of green bird (to add to our Landings bird list) that she saw on sunflowers outside her window! Since my first encounter with this beautiful bird, I learned that it is a Nanday parakeet (genus Aratinga nenday) or Nanday Conure. The Nanday parakeet was known as the Black-headed parakeet until the American Ornithological Union changed its official name in 2014. It is a member of the
Psittacidae family making it a true parrot. However, it is not native to Florida – rather it is a neotropical parrot that is native to South America These birds were very popular as caged pets, and escaped Nandays have successfully established populations in Florida – indeed, the American Birding Association now considers the Nanday Parakeet to be “an established resident”. These residents are easy to recognize with an overall bright green color, black head and beak, blue-green upper chest, dark blue tips on wings and tail, and red leggings! They range in length from 12.5 to 14.5 inches and have a wingspan of 22 to 24 inches. Nanday Parakeets form monogamous pair bonds and makes its nest in the cavity of a tree. The female lays between 2 and 5 eggs, which hatch after about 25 days. During

Halloween 2019 at The Landings Each year the holidays begin with a surreal exhibition of our most morbid fears: Zombies, phantoms, insurance salesmen…beauty school haircuts! And, in those dark hours of a summer gone by, there is no comfort. Only a terror that candy crunchers may rouse us after a donning of our bedclothes. With a dreaded text, text, texting on our chamber door.

Friday, November 1st, the day after actual Halloween was a fortuitous choice for our celebration. We set a record for turnout and dark, delicious weather. Holiday spirits indeed smiled on us at Hurter’s Haunted Manse and Treibly’s Pine Harrier block party. Thanks also must go to Plass family, Ramsey Frangie, and the Powell’s cleanup crew.
More than I can count on my hands and feet. I want to thank everyone who lent an electric outlet to power the inflatable ghost bride. See you next year.

LHA Board of Directors Election The Annual Meeting of Members of The Landings Homeowners Association, Inc. will be held at 7:00 p.m. on February 14, 2020 at the Landings Racquet Club, 5050 Landings Boulevard, Sarasota, Florida 34231. There are four seats up for election at the meeting. The incumbents – Dick Bayles, Harvey Greller, Jane Hyslop and Michael Knupp – are standing for re-election. Any owner may stand for election to a seat on our Board of Directors and all are encouraged to do so. Those wishing to run for election must file their intention and the information to be included in the Annual Meeting material sent to each owner on or before January 9, 2020. Your intention may be filed in writing via US Mail to:
Landings Homeowners Association 1729 Landings Way Sarasota, FL 34231-3227 or via e-mail to: landings.homeowners@gmail.com Interested owners should talk with one or more of the current board members to get an idea of what is expected of members of the board. LHA board meetings are regularly scheduled on the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the Landings Racquet Club; other meetings are called as business requirements dictate. More information about the Association is available on the Landings Homeowners page on the residents’ section of the Landings website – www. thelandingsofsarasota.com/login.
LHA Electronic Participation The Florida legislature recently amended Statute 720, which governs the operations of the state’s homeowners associations, to provide for the distribution of materials, conducting votes, and elections using email and online voting services. The Landings Homeowners Association has begun to take advantage of the time and cost savings of is provisions in communicating with its 218 members. As this article is being written, over 100 owners have agreed to receive communications via e-mail and can participate in its 2020 Annual Meeting and elections through an online service. The Association uses companies
specializing in these services to comply with the requirements of the enabling legislation. The LHA has historically struggled to reach the 30% quorum required to conduct its annual meetings using the US Mail as the communication method – in recent years getting only 3133% of its owners to respond within a couple of days before the meeting. The hope is that using this new capability will improve the participation rate of its owners. The LHA also uses its pages in the Landings website to make upto-date information to its members, including meeting agendas, minutes, budget, and governing documents.

LHA Amended & Restated Bylaws The Amended and Restated Bylaws of The Landings Homeowners Association, Inc, were adopted at its October meeting, and have been recorded with the Clerk of Sarasota County. A copy of the recorded document was e-mailed to those participating in association activities electronically and mailed to those who have not yet consented to doing so. In that mailing, we included a consent form to be returned if an owner elects to participate electronically; doing
so greatly reduces the time and effort in distributing material and conducting elections. The Bylaws and other governing documents of the Association may be found on the LHA page on the residents login of the Landings website (www. thelandingsofsarasota.com/login). Other information on the site include the agenda for the next Board of Directors meeting, the minutes of past meetings, the Annual Budget and a map of association addresses.

For example, everyone looks forward to seeing them, they’re jolly and put a smile on your face, they both prefer the color red this time of year, and both have the cutest darn reindeer you’ve ever seen! And while Santa may come down the chimney bearing brightly wrapped gifts, our favorite Sarasota Ice Cream Man, Jerry Williams from Abel’s Ice Cream has everything you’ll need to fill the stockings hanging from the mantel. From their award-winning Sweet Shoppe USA chocolates to tasty jam, aioli, and chutney from Stonewall Kitchens, LeLu’s Island Coffee, to Abel’s gift cards and swag, there’s something for everyone! No doubt this time of year can be a little stressful, but amidst the hustle and bustle our friends at Abel’s Ice Cream wanted to remind you that one of the very best parts of stopping in to find the perfect stocking stuffer is taking a moment for yourself to enjoy a taste of the holidays. Abel’s featured ice cream flavors are Peppermint Ice Cream (Refreshing and vibrant; peppermint ice cream filled with peppermint candy.) and Eggnog Ice Cream (Sweet and delicious! A seasonal favorite). There’s no better way to get into the spirit of the season! Abel’s Ice Cream is located at 1886 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota in the South Bridge Plaza. Open

Large Turnout for Community Hazardous Waste Removal
17
By Harvey Greller / Photo by Gary Warren Records were broken on November 13th when The Landings community held their twice a year hazardous waste removal. There were over 50 residents dropping off hazardous waste at the north gate. Normally there are approximately 20 residents participating. At times there were five or six residents waiting in line for the waste removal and thanks to David Jacaruso, who picked up the trailer needed for this operation and droped off the hazardous waste, along with Burt Frank, Gary Warren and myself, we quickly were able to move the line of cars.
Unfortunately we had to turn a few residents away who didn’t have an appointment. Our trailer bed was full to capacity and there was no room to spare. In the future it is imperative that appointments are made for the drop off to George Niel of Argus Property Management at 941-927-6464 or you can email him at: george@argusmgmt.com Our next community haul program will be on March 17, 2020 and for the first time will be run by the Sarasota County Hazardous Waste department. Appointments will still be required.
New single-stream recycling cart being delivered Delivery of new single stream recycling carts for solid waste customers living in unincorporated portions of Sarasota County started Nov. 1. The carts are part of the county’s new singlestream recycling program, which will allow residents to place all recyclable material into one container, instead of separating the items into two separate bins for curbside collection. Weather permitting, up to 3,400 carts will be delivered each day, Mondays through Saturdays. Deliveries of the new carts are anticipated to be completed by Dec. 20, with the single-stream recycling collection starting the week of Jan. 6, 2020. “Just a reminder that if residents use the new carts prior to Jan. 6, material will not be collected,” said Wendi Crisp, outreach coordinator for Sarasota County Solid Waste. “To help residents remember when to begin using the carts, we are encouraging everyone to think, new year, new cart.” The new carts roll easily to the curb, have lids which help keep materials contained and dry, reduce windblown litter and provide more capacity for recyclable materials. For the transition to single stream recycling Sarasota County partnered with organizations including Waste Management and the Recycling Partnership, a national non-profit organization, who provided a grant to help purchase the new carts. In addition, Single Stream Recyclers, which is based in Sarasota County, will handle the processing of materials after collection. Residents are encouraged to visit this link to see the anticipated delivery date of their new carts. For more information, call the Sarasota County Contact Center at 941-861-5000.

DECEMBER 2019
Poytas and Hennessys, Volunteer as ushers Two Landings couples have chosen to support local Sarasota theatres by serving as ushers. All four are lifetime drama enthusiasts who enjoy going to plays and musicals as often as possible, and ushering is one way to make certain that happens. Steve and Mona Poyta have chosen Florida Studio Theatre (FST) as their place to volunteer. They have been ushering for the past three years and find the experience delightful! It takes many volunteers to cover the hundreds of performances taking place in four different theatres at FST. On average, each FST volunteer works about seven performances over the course of a year. Prior to the theatre season, you inform the Volunteer Coordinator of your availability, and based upon that, you are provided your annual ushering assignments. FST is very flexible about changing your schedule during the year. Volunteers are given the option to usher for any of FST’s programs: Mainstage, Cabaret, Improv, Children’s Theatre, and Stage III. Ushering serves to support contemporary theatre in Sarasota: it is also a way to see shows for FREE! The time commitment is small: ushers typically arrive an hour or an hour and a quarter before curtain time, and help with a variety of tasks, from stuffing programs to helping patrons find their seats. Dress code for ushers is black bottoms with white tops, and free refreshment is made available. FST sees that their volunteers are guaranteed seats, and sometimes these seats are the best in the house. Policy dictates that immediately prior to the performance, standby ticket holders sweep in along with ushers to claim empty seats. Once the curtain goes up, ushers become members of the audience, returning briefly to ushering responsibilities during intermissions. As soon

as the crowd disperses, ushers quickly help clean the theatre and then are free to go home. Steve Poyta grew up in New York City around theatre people. His father was the accountant for various off-Broadway theatres, so actors, directors, designers and the like were frequent visitors in his boyhood home. Steve always loved the theatre but did not enter that field himself. Instead, he made a career out of designing and managing computer programs for the Federal government. Linda and Joe Hennessy have chosen Asolo and Cook Theatres as their places to volunteer. At those sites, they usher not only for theatrical performances, but also for the Sarasota Ballet and Sarasota Contemporary Dance. According to the Hennessys the process is simple. You inform the coordinator of your preferences as to days of the week, and evening vs. matinee. The house manager then assigns your dates. The Asolo Theatre holds about 12 events, whereas ballet holds 2-3 events, and the Sarasota Contemporary Dance holds 4 events. Each performing group is managed separately by different house managers (see contacts at the end of this article). Your plans may change, of course, but the coordinators are good about locating an alternate out of their large pool of substitutes. Some volunteers prefer only to act as last-minute substitutes, so someone is always available. The “substitute only” option is great for people who don’t want the bigger commitment. The Asolo needs about 20 ushers per show to serve in their two theatres. In the main theatre, people must be available to cover the door, the orchestra, the mezzanine, and the balcony. Asolo ushers are given handbooks and hear the same little speech before each performance: make
sure people are seated on time; make sure people know about emergency exits; in event of an emergency, get the house manager and call 911. The house manager also goes over what to expect at that specific performance: how many people will attend, how many intermissions, and if there is anything unusual about the evening. Ushers must be at the Asolo theatre 90 minutes before curtain, and report directly to the house manager. They are expected to wear name tags and be attired in black pants, black jackets, and white tops. Ushers for Sarasota Dance, however, wear more casual attire: black pants and black polos that the company provides. The Hennessys have ushered at Asolo for eight years, gotten to know many of their fellow ushers, and found the experience both flexible and delightful. Both the Poytas and the Hennessys also volunteer for other organizations. Joe Hennessy is a Master Gardener who spends time at Selby Gardens, and at the County Extension Center. Linda

volunteers at the Friendship Center helping people master the intricacies of ipads and iphones. Both Joe and Linda worked for AT&T in New Jersey before settling in Sarasota. Steve Poyta finds time to drive for FISH, a volunteer program that takes people to medical appointments. He also delivers for Meals on Wheels. Mona serves at the Exchange (formerly the Women’s Exchange) as well as volunteering in the Landings Library. Says Steve, “I’ve never thought of ushering as volunteer work. It’s so good…so easy….so worthwhile. You are a representative of the theatre!” “You have to be a people person,” chimes in Mona. As a retired Special Education Teacher, she is exactly that! Judy Tara
By Norman Olshansky After 14 years in The Landings, Larry and Carmen Lawrence are moving further south to a golfing community. Whenever there was a need for leadership, the Lawrences stepped forward. Over the course of his years in The Landings, Larry was President of LMA, served on its board for many years and chaired the Lakes Committee, External Affairs Committee, Community Hauling Program, Strategic Planning Committee, Board Orientation Committee, Eagle Editorial Committee, established the Environmental Committee, and chaired the Nominating Committee to name a few. Carmen was the lead person working on the renovation and redecoration of the Lakeside room at the club, and served on various committees, including the Valentines Dance, Welcome Event, Hoedown, and Holiday parties. She also served as a host for the Father Son Tennis Tournament and was a member of the LMA aesthetics committee. She hosted several

Children’s Holiday Gift programs and formerly was an active tennis player along with Larry. Larry is most proud of his work in recruiting leadership to serve on the LMA Board and committees. Carmen noted that The Landings has been a wonderful place for her and her visiting family who have enjoyed all of the activities and friends they’ve made over the years. They loved their time in The Landings and we’ve loved them, Thanks Larry and Carmen for all you have done to make our community such a special place. We wish you well.

What’s happening next Boris? By Dee Ricapito Here’s a brief follow-up to the story about our Landings resident, Boris Malden, Film and TV Producer who took part in many Emmy, Golden Globe, and Academy Award projects. The story ended with Boris contemplating retirement. Not to be, because, this month Boris is back in Baltimore. This time shooting a pilot for a Showtime series. He said, “It’s a political thriller.” The series is based on the book, “The President is Missing,” written by James Patterson and former President, Bill Clinton. Sounds great, hope it’s a WINNER!
