2021 Annual Assessment The single-unit 2021 Annual Assessment for the Landings Management Association is $1,305.00, an $8.00 increase over the 2020 amount.

This is $70.00 less than the prior estimate published in the October issue of The Landings Eagle due to considerable work on reducing the cost of our Grounds Maintenance ex-

pense without sacrificing the quality of our landscaping.

So, now we are upping our goal and doing our best to help more children have a happy holiday season. If you have already adopted or donatedTHANK YOU VERY MUCH! If you haven’t please consider joining your neighbors and friends in adopting a child and shopping for their wish list (thank goodness for on-line shopping) or donating for our “shoppers” to do the purchasing of gifts. THE MARK

On February 4th, we will have our annual meeting and election of board members and officers. We have two board members who will be leaving the board due to “term limits” (Doug Day and Mike Knupp). Owners can self-nominate up to the date of the annual meeting. If you, or someone you know is interested, ple a s e cont ac t Joa n Kopl i n , Nominating Committee Chair within the week. The bios and photos of candidates who have indicated an interest in running for the board are in this issue of the Eagle. Please review their bios and let your association Presidents know your choices for the board. They are the only ones who can cast votes at the annual meeting. They will have an opportunity to meet with the candidates on January 14th at 7 PM. There are a large number of candidates for the five open positions. The committee worked hard to recruit new people, younger residents, a nd represent at ives f rom throughout the community. See the nominating committee report in this issue. As you are aware, over the past several months, our security committee has been exploring the need and costs associated with putting in new, more secure gates at the North and South entrances. Based on the cost, and lack of significant security issues this past

year, they have recommended that we delay going forward with new gates at this time. However, they have recommended that the hours of the night roving patrol and the closing times for the North and South Gates be changed. See Mike Knupp’s security report in this issue of the Eagle. T h e E NA C o m m it t e e h a s completed t hei r su r vey a nd research. They will be making a presentation to the board at our December 3rd meeting. A summary of their report is in this issue of the Eagle. If you are interested in being on the zoom meeting of the board, please contact Dick Bayles for information on how to connect. I’m pleased to note that Roger Kidder has agreed to take on the chairmanship of the Drainage Committee, Jeff Smith will be our Lakes Committee chair and Mike Knupp has agreed to stay on as Security Committee chair even though he is leaving the board. Other committee appointments will be made after the election of new board members in February. Landscaping has been a major concer n t h is yea r wit h costs skyrocketing. We were able to find ways to reduce those costs for the coming year. This will result in a reduction of what we originally posted for our 2021 budget. See Dick Bayles’s report in this issue of the Eagle. I f yo u h ave n’t d r i ve n o n Peregrine Point recently, check out the new roads and Island. Many thanks to the Roads Committee for their hard work dealing with this project. We have been very fortunate i n T he La ndi ngs du r i ng t he pandemic so far. We’ve only had a few cases among residents. Given the recent spike in cases in Florida, we encourage you to continue wearing masks, washing hands frequently and social distancing.

T h e L a nd i ng s S a fe t y a nd Security Committee has proposed some changes to several security procedures and the LMA Board has approved the changes. These changes will become effective on January 1, 2021. Over the last several months, your Safety & Security Committee has been evaluating various options related to the security at our north and south entrances. The options run the gambit from leaving things status quo to installing new gates. After examining crime statistics from the Sarasota Count y Sheriff’s Office and our own records of reported crimes, we have concluded there is more of a misperception of possible crimes than the data confirms. Given the costs of installing new gates verses more pressing capital needs in The Landings, the committee has recommended not to request funding for new gates at this time. We are aware that residents are concerned about trespassing, mostly through the South Gate. We have concluded that the South Gate is most vulnerable to criminal trespassing late in the evening and through the overnight hours. The street leading into the South Gate is mostly deserted and poorly lite at night, making it more susceptible to nefarious activity.

T hu s, t h e c o m m it t e e h a s recommended, and the Board has approved a change to the closing hours of the South Gate. Effective January 1, 2021, the South Gate will be closed at 10:00 P.M. and reopen at 6:00 A.M. The traffic volume at the North Gate and the fact that the shopping center has more activity and better lighting, the Board has approved new hours, closing at 11:00 P.M. and reopening at 6:00 A.M. effective January 1, 2021. In addition to the new gate closing hours, the night guard patrol hours will be changed from the current 8:00 P.M. to 4:00 A.M. shift to a 10:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. We believe this will provide more eyes in the community in the wee hours of the night. T he f i n a l s e c u r it y c h a nge approved by the Board is the replacement of t he se c u r it y gate combination lock leading out to Field Road at the end of Pine Harrier Drive. The current combination will remain on the new lock until January 1, 2021 and will be changed from time to time. We believe this will prevent some illegal entries to the community . Signs will be installed on the gate telling residents how to obtain the new combination in January.

LMA Meeting Notes By Trebor Britt LMA President Norm Olshansky began the Zoom meeting by announcing the following during his President’s Report: • The Peregrine Road re-paving project is underway. Significant drainage upgrades are also included in the project. This project was more expensive than originally projected. As a result, the Finance Committee will be working over the next several months to accurately project money needed to pave the remaining roads at The Landings. • The annual meeting to elect new board members and officers will occur at the February meeting. Doug Day and Mike Knupp will be leaving the board due to term limits. Owners are allowed to self -nominate up to the date of the annual meeting. Owners who would like to nominate someone are asked to contact Nominating Committee Chair, Joan Koplin. Bio’s and photos of those nominated will appear in the December issue of The Eagle. Notify your association president with your voting preferences.

• Recommendations and costs associated with Nature Trail and Gazebo issues may be presented at the next board meeting. • R isi ng la ndscapi ng costs effecting the budget will be addressed during tonight’s meeting. • E ven t houg h on ly a few COVID cases have affected Landing’s residents, Olshansky encouraged wearing masks, social distancing and washing hands frequently.

FINANCE REPORT

Treasurer Dick Bayles forecasted finances by the end of the year would be at or near on budget or possibly a surplus of about $10,000. As of October 30, there are five remaining receivables from residential owners. A lien has been filed against each owner.

MANAGERS REPORT

L a nd i n g ’s M a n ag e r S t e ve Brocken sh i re repor ted t he following: • Helping Landscape Chair Paul Weiner with the landscape bid process.

• T he Sa fet y a nd S e c u r it y Committee has been looking into costs of new, more secure North and South entrance gates.

• He will attend the next Safety and Security meeting to discuss issues related to the letters regarding speeding.

• T h e E a g l e s N e s t A r e a Committee will make a detailed presentation to the board at the December 3rd meeting. • Olshansky announced two new committee chairmen. Jeff Smith will chair the Lakes Committee and Roger Kidder will chair the Drainage Committee. Mike Knupp agreed to continue his work as the Safety and Security Committee even though he is leaving his board position.

• Happy to report he had not received a single complaint regarding the paving project. • Reported receivi ng a n abundance of emails that should be directed to association presidents. • S olicited more bids for the Nature Trail issues.

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping Chair Paul Weiner reported the bid from last year’s

contractor, Natural Designs, was significantly higher this year. Reasons for the increase included additional areas added to the contract, as well as substantially more work than anticipated in other areas. Because of this high bid, additional bids were solicited. The total bid from another contractor was actually a few thousand dollars less than last year’s contract. Paul Weiner moved to accept the contract of the lowest bidder. The motion was voted on and passed. Another motion was made for LMA to accept landscaping responsibilities for areas outside the walls along Philippi Shores, with the exception of those along the county park. The motion was voted on and passed.

PEREGRINE ROADS PROJECT

T he pav i ng s c he du le wa s extended slightly because of rain expected from Tropical Storm Eta. The only unplanned expense resulted from more extensive, necessary, but unplanned drainage work. Construction is proceeding nicely.

2021 BUDGET

A f ter approv i ng a bid for landscaping, Treasurer Dick Bayles announced an increase of the annual assessment of $8 over last year’s budget. This brings the annual assessment total to $1305 per single unit for 2021. A motion was made to approve the 2021 Landings Management Association budget. The motion was voted on and passed.

LAKES

New Lakes Committee Chair, Jeff Smith, reported the proposed lakes projects will not have an impact on the 2021 budget. The $41,000 needed for the lake remediation project on Lakes 1, 2, and 5 would come out of the reserves. The work needed

includes bank reconstruction caused by erosion, the installation of riprap, dredging, removal of invasive trees, etc. The committee plans to contract with new vendors, Seabreeze Landscape and Erosion Solutions, in order to diversify from a single vendor. A motion was made to approve up to $42,000 from the reserves to be available to the Lakes Committee to deal with the issues discussed. The motion was voted on and passed.

each of the candidates in January. Votes will be taken and tabulated immediately at the February LMA Board meeting. The bylaws state, “Any eligible person desiring to be a candidate may submit a selfnomination, in writing, not less than 30 days prior to the scheduled election and shall automatically be entitled to be listed on the ballot. … Nominations shall also be accepted from the floor on the date of the election.“

LAKE 7 PRESERVE

SAFETY AND SECURITY

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

MAINTENANCE

The Lakes Committee has been under an order from the county regulator to replant a county designated preserve on the eastt side of Lake 7. Each of the three times the preserve has been replanted, all the new plantings died. A meeting is being scheduled with the county regulator to discuss other options. Olshansky suggested if an agreeable solution is not reached, the committee should contact a county commissioner for help and advice. Chair Joan Koplin began by thanking Henry Rhodes for his valuable advice and help with this process. She also thanked her committee members, Paul Weiner, Doug Brady, Dee Ricapito, Beth Malen, Beverly Austen and Cue Camins. Nearly 30 residents were contacted to serve. Five seats need to be filled. The committee is trying to have more diversity on the board. Currently, nine candidates will be running to fill the five vacant seats. The nine candidates are Jim Goldman, Joan Koplin, Gary Kernov, Cali Lampton, Carol LaRose, Elida Ramberger, Richard Tanner, Allison Taylor and Paul Weiner. Short biographies and photos of all the candidates can be found in this issue of The Eagle. Association presidents will meet

C h a i r m a n M ic h ael K nupp brought two recommendations to the board that were voted on and approved by his committee. He moved to change the closing time of the North Gate from midnight to 11 PM and to change the closing time of the South Gate from midnight to 10 PM to enhance security. The motion passed. Knupp then moved to change the roving security patrol hours from 8 PM-4 AM to 10 PM-6 AM. The motion passed. Maintenance Committee Chair Ron Pierce reported the progress of several projects. • The sign repair and replacement program in continuing. • A new lock and signage will be installed at the Field Road gate entry. • Several gate locks were replaced due to normal wear and tear. • A Kestral Park Way North road sign that was damaged by a vehicle will be repaired and reinstalled. • Two mailboxes destroyed by large paving trucks were replaced at t he vendor ’s expense. • A huge boulder on Kestral Park Terrace was repositioned out of the roadway.

Due to COVID-19, events could be postponed or canceled. Please check the The Landings Eagle Calendar.

Eagles Nest Area Survey results and analysis Below is a summary of the survey results related to the Eagles Nest Area of the Landings. A full report will be presented at the December 5th LMA Board Meeting. If you want to participate by Zoom, please contact Dick Bayles to obtain logon information. The Eagles Next Area (the “ENA”) is a 7.4-acre area owned and maintained by the Landings Management Association (the “LMA”). All unit owners in the La ndi ngs, pay a n nual dues, a portion of which is used to maintain the ENA. While the Board of LMA is responsible for management of properties in the Landings, all residents should have a say in its future use and development. The original purpose of the ENA was to serve as a protected nesting area for eagles and the area was thus closed off to community use except as a walking and observation area. However, since eagles have not nested in this area for 20+ years, the restrictions on the use of the ENA may be modified to expand the scope of the limited amenities currently available in this area. Any changes to the covenants governing the ENA would need to be approved by unanimous vote of the President of each Landings Association.

T he ENA Com m it te e (t he “Committee”) was tasked with surveying the preferences of La ndi ngs ow ners rega rdi ng the future use of the ENA. The E NA C o m m i t t e e m e m b e r s include Henry Rhodes (Chair), Neil Goldman, Joe Hennessy, Maralyn Kaufman and Gary Kurnov. Committee members met several times virtually to create a 10 - quest ion su r vey using SurveyMonkey, a leading online survey tool. A link to the survey was sent to LMA residents via email for whom email was available, physical copies were provided if email was not available. Of the approximately 700 LMA households, t he Com m it te e received roughly 250 completed surveys or about 36% response rate. According to SurveyMonkey, a sample size of 250 would yield a 95% confidence level that the sample accurately reflects the attitudes of the LMA population with a 5% margin of error. The results of the survey are tabulated

and discussed below. 75% of residents have visited the ENA at least once in the past year and 40% visited at least five times. About one quarter of residents have never visited and just as many have visited more than eight times.

Why have you not accessed the area more often?

This was a qualitative question, and a sampling of responses is included below. The samples below would indicate that the primary reason for low usage among residents is the lack of amenities/ activities and accessibility. A few respondents noted the private appearance of the ENA and concern for disturbing residents surrounding the ENA. • Not interesting enough • Never realized we could use the area • We love this destination in our community but there is not a lot to do and fire ants have been a problem.

• Don’t want to bother those living adjacent • It is a long walk--distance! • I t d i d n o t s e e m e a s i l y accessible; also it seemed kind of private; paths not sufficiently maintained; no benches. • I like to walk there with my dog but, there are spikes that get on him • Can’t ride my bike in this area • A lways has seemed a little overgrown and buggy • The trail is too short • Entrance not that well marked and I’m usually not walking there • I would visit more often if there was some seating available. • T here is no place to sit and the walking area is quite restricted and small. A large majority or 71% of residents would like to add amenities or activities to the ENA. Prior to issuing the survey, memb ers of t he Com m it te e

reached out to Landings residents to obtain their ideas for enhancing the ENA. The Committee used this feedback to create a list of twenty enhancements and asked respondents to check off as many options as they desired. The number one item was benches, favored by 63% of respondents. This was followed by purple martin nesting houses (48%), expanded natural groomed paths (42%), additional native trees and shrubs (38%), beehives (35%), gazebo (34%), natural landscaped screening of homes that abut the area (32%), picnic tables (27%), perimeter paved path for walking, jogging and biking (26%), and fenced in dog park (25%). The popularity of these responses indicates that residents would like to see the addition of basic amenities and activities consistent with those they would find in a traditional park. Respondents were given the opt ion of l ist i ng addit iona l en ha ncements. A sa mple of

responses is shown below. • D o g s t a t i o n s f o r w a s t e elimination • Accessible to handicapped • Shaded areas • More bike friendly • Lighting on paths • Putting green • Return to natural state for wildlife • Kayak launch/storage • Butterfly Gardens • Parking spaces • Trash Cans

for supporting community strength and the investments we have in our homes • Would be awesome to make the neighborhood more friendly • All of the above enhancements are inconsistent with the intent of the Eagles Nest Area as described in the current LMA Covenant • T here a re more pressi ng challenges for LMA to address that deserve attention and funds • S o m e o f t h e s u g g e s t e d

The last quest ion asked r e spondents to prov ide a ny additional feedback. A sample of the responses is included below. Comments were generally positive and encouraging in support of creating additional amenities and activities in the “heart” of the Landings, away from traffic, for the benefit of the whole community. However, several of the responses were negative, pointing out other more pressing matters in the Landings, the cost of any proposed amenities/activities and impact to the residents surrounding the ENA (e.g. noise, privacy, security). • Constructing a new community destination is very important

i mproveme nt s wou ld b e expensive to install and may only attract a limited few. • If we had a fenced in dog park it would make our community just about perfect! Without it our dogs are stuck on leashes all the time. • Keep improving the amenities. Property values will continue to rise. • Was never intended to be developed. Please do not feel the need to do so. • Thanks for your efforts in trying to enhance The Landings! • Would love amenities, but any amenity which might encourage gatherings may

also require running water, toilet facilities, trash upkeep (humans being people). • Please consider creating a park that can act as “the heart” of The Landings. Please also consider multiple points of entry so that south end homeowners don’t need to walk all the way around to Landings Blvd. • The residents who abut this area should have a major voice in any decision since they bought their properties reasonably expecting that the eagle area would remain unchanged. • Any proposed enhancements should be handled in a cost effective way. • This would be a great asset to the already lovely neighborhood to have another nature escape to enjoy. I’ve always wished there were more paths. • Noise control should be a very important issue to pursue. • With more and more families moving to the Landings and most of them having smaller yards, it would be amazing to have this area for our kids to play outside. • In addition to being able to enjoy this area personally I believe it will add value to our homes and would support some additional expenditure to bring this idea to life. • Expand the amenities so more people including children can enjoy it! • It should be a quiet solitary area to reflect while sitting on

a bench. • All of the enhancements I’ve checked would greatly add to Life in the Landings! • Leave basically as is. I would prefer more effort to create a kayak landing elsewhere. • Lovely as is. Keeping it a “quiet space” or small park with benches provides a haven in a crazy world. Look to Gramercy Park in Manhattan for ideas… • The board has an opportunity to give residents a safe alternative to the roads. Not pleasant to go for a walk and have a diesel truck go by. Property values would increase. • The area should remain an oasis of quiet and beauty; no game centers, dog parks, golf areas, even picnic tables that will lead to noise and most likely additional clean-up needs. • This is an under-utilized area and it should be put to good use. • T h e a r e a n e e d s t o b e modernized and inviting. Useful for residents, but not just cleared out. Landscaping is very important. • We need pickle ball since people are leaving or not buying in Landings due to absence of pb courts. Will add to property values

I have been a resident of the La ndi ngs si nce 2015, when I moved to sunny Sarasota with my wife Lauren, and our two kids, from NYC. I was born in Russia and im m ig rated with my family to NJ when I was eight years old, while Lauren grew up right here in Sarasota. Lauren and I met as students at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. When looking to move to Sarasota, we chose The Landings for its natural beauty, quiet and serenity, in contrast to the hustle and bustle of New York. Our kids are Zachary, a fifth grader at Pine View and a compet it ive so ccer player, and Raina, a second grader at Phillippi Shores Elementary and a gymnastics enthusiast. Professionally, I have been wo rk i n g at Tag l i c h P r i vat e Equit y, a private equit y firm headquartered in Long Island, for the past 13 years. In my role with the firm, I focus on sourcing, evaluating and executing private equity transactions focused on lower middle market companies in the manufacturing, business services and consumer products space. I s e r ve on t he Boa rd of Directors of t wo portfolio companies, Basin Investors LLC (an oilfield services company) and Vermont Maple Holdings LLC (a maple syrup producer). Prior to Taglich, I worked in Corporate Development at The Nielsen Company and at Moody’s, and in Management Consulting at Decision Strategies International. I received a B.S. in Economics from The Wharton School, at the University of Pennsylvania, with concentrations in Marketing and Management.

I tend to listen more than I speak and enjoy an exchange of ideas over matters of common community interest. That is why I am enthusiastic about a Board Seat. I will brief ly put forth my background below. The brevity is because what I bring to our community’s service is not the past, but the future. I have been a full-time resident of The Landings since 2018. I am an attorney, law professor and was the Managing Partner at a large law firm. As a semi-retired professional, I can bring management skills, leadership experience, negotiating skill, organizational skill, integrity, and reliability to the LMA Board. Environ ment, securit y a nd budget issues are on everyone’s mind. We have to maintain our quality of life, with reasonable

budget adjustments based upon active management of costs and needs. A s a n out do o r s p e r s o n , I enjoy the atmosphere created by living at The Landings. It needs protection, planning and continued good management. My free time is spent hiking, bic ycl i ng , f i sh i ng , k aya k i ng and enjoying our south Florida weather and habitat. I have a son employed at Mote Marine, so our common interests give us a lot to share. My wife is a Vocational School System Administrator in Essex County, N.J. and looks forward to more use of our beautiful tennis courts in the future. I tend to be forward thinking and cost conscious with the joint funds of others. I am a “can-do”, hands-on st yle manager and enjoy participating and doing my part for the betterment of all our community goals. I think I can help if you would grant me the privilege with your vote.

I recently moved to Sarasota full-time with my Fiancé, David Osborn. We chose Sarasota after visiting in May because we both love saltwater and the beauty of the Florida Gulf Coast Beaches. David enjoys wade fishing and I enjoy swimming in the waves, as he fishes. I found 1668 Starling Drive the last day we were here and told David “We have to go see this place before we drive back to Houston.” The moment we drove through The Landings entrance, we were mesmerized by the beautiful treelined streets and the serenity of nature all around us. When we walked into our future home, we were hooked and certain we’d found the one. We spend each morning in o u r F lo r id a r o o m d r i n k i n g ou r cof fe e a nd enjoy i ng t he tranquility of nature all around us. One of our favorite things to do here in The Landings is visit with our neighbors as they walk their dogs. Everyone is so friendly. A big bonus is The Landings location on Phillippi Creek and Roberts Bay. We are getting married in January. The Gazebo is my first pick as it will just be the two of us and David enjoys fishing there. I wa s b o r n a n d r a i s e d i n Ho u s t o n , T X a n d a m a 3r d generation Texan. I’ve already volu nte e r e d for a nd b e e n accepted to be on The Landings S out h V II Boa rd a s t he r e i s an opening, which I’m told is imminent. My f i r s t H OA B o a r d experience is from when I lived in the D.C. area for 19 years. I was elected to the Old Town Gr e e n s Condom i n iu m HOA Board the first year and served for 6 years, 3 consecutive 2-year terms. I was involved in making decisions on new management companies and vendor contract s e l e c t i o n . The City of Alexandria provided Rec ycli ng Ser vices similar to Sarasota County here in The Landings. We installed a Community Irrigation System. My wife and I moved to The Landings in September 2013 and have found it to be a wonderful place to live. I have served on the Board and as Chairman of Landscaping of both LRC and LMA since 2017, as part of my effort to continue to make The Landings the preeminent tennis community in Sarasota. As our community in frastructure ages there are many challenges ahead of us and I hope to continue to work to keep the Landings a place we are all proud to call home.

Holidays always bring back memories! By Dee Ricapito How The LRC Began & The National Father and Son Tournament-- (Then & Now) New Yea r ’s Eve 1983, Bob Morris of RAMAR Developers held a party to promote homes and a new LRC tennis facility. “All you could see was a few a c r e s o f s a n d y s o i l ,” s a i d Bob Luxembourg, LRC court designer, our first Club Manager & Tennis Pro. The courts opened March 10, 1984 with 10 members and 20 non-residents on a yearly basis. A hol iday pro - celebr it y event was held in December 1984 with top ranked featured players Rob er t S eg uso, Ken Flach and 55 year old Bobby Riggs, showcasing our first class facility. Luxembourg in later years commented, “I think we have the best facility in Sarasota County and I’m sure that our Board of Directors and Manager, Kevin will keep it that way .” Ke v i n L e c h l it n e r, L RC Manager brings us up-to-date with the Club’s improvements since he arrived in 2006. “T he sw i m m i ng pool wa s drained and acid washed several years ago. All the patio furniture and canopies have been replaced. A new geothermal heating and cooling system was installed. All of the building interiors have been completely updated over the last ten years. As well as the walkway roofs between the buildings were recently replaced. The Poolside Clubhouse serves as a library and meeting room and was renovated with custom built-in bookcases, that made the room look much bigger than before even though the building’s footprint didn’t change. T he Fit ness Center was expanded on 2013. All of the equipment has been replaced w it h t he except ion of t he elliptical Strider. It is the only original piece left. It wouldn’t be possible without the great help from the entire staff and the Board of Directors. It certainly is a team effort.” The National USTA Father and Son Tournament Interview with Kevin. W hen you took the job as Manager of the Racquet Club, did you realize you were also taking on the responsibility of running a Nationally sanctioned USTA Tennis Tournament? KL: “Yes, during my interview back in 2006, the Board told m e a b o u t t h e Fa t h e r, S o n Tournament. I looked forward to playing a role in both planning for and running the National C h a mpion sh ips here at t he Landings.” What are your feelings about t he Tou r n a me nt no t b ei ng played this year? KL: “I was disappointed when I heard the USTA had cancelled all Cat. 1 events for the rest of the year. I know how much the players and the members look forward to it. It will be the first

D o y o u h a ve t o r u n t h e tournament according to USTA guidelines? How do you procure the Gold, Silver and Bronze balls that you award the winners? KL: “Yes, we follow the USTA guidelines. It is a Category 1 National Championship with st r ic t g u ide l i ne s.T he USTA provides the trophies each year - gold, silver and bronze balls in decorative display cases.” How st ressfu l is it bei ng Tennis Director of the Father & Son Tournament year after year? KL: “T here is some st ress involved. More so in the planning stages and preparations before the tournaments begin. Once the matches start, everything runs like clockwork as long as the weather cooperates. Luckily, we have only had two or three days in the last 14 years that weather has been an issue. It also helps having experienced p r o f e s s i o n a l s l i k e Ad r i a n Moghina and Jen Fiers helping out with everything. It truly takes a team effort to organize and run a tournament of this caliber. “ W hat does it take get t ing r e ad y f o r t h e t o u r n a m e n t - - ge t t i ng r epeat playe r s, sponsors, preparing the courts, etc? and the connection they have with the members. We do send out a “save the date” postcard over the summer to all players that have participated in any of the four national championships. The other three surfaces are ha rd cou rt, g rass cou rt a nd indoor. We don’t do anything special to the courts for the tournaments other than hanging the sponsor banners. The courts are all resurfaced every year in the summer to get them ready for season. We have been lucky to have several repeat sponsors each year. We also reach out to local businesses who we feel can benefit from sponsoring the tournaments. Members also know businesses who may want to advertise and support the tournament.” W h at i s t he toug hest job organizing the event? KL: “S et t i ng up t he d raw i s labor i nten sive. W hen determining the seeds, we must check the national rankings and the head-to-head records from the other national championships for all the players. I also personally speak with a representative at the national level to make sure we haven’t overlooked anything with the seeding process. Once t h e s e e d s a r e e nt e r e d, t h e USTA software places the other participants in the draw. Thanks to Dee and Ralph, the ambassadors and luncheon are well organized which takes a tremendous load off my plate and allows me to focus on the tournament. Essential are the volunteers helping the players’ needs on the court. Colin Wendell, Paul Weiner, Angie Eason, run all day long with ice, water, court player signs, balls whatever! Also, our maintenance guys Hans and Edvin work tirelessly preparing the courts for the many matches. Even the certified Chair Umpire over the years was Landings resident Guy Mi len i. T he registration desk is maintained

daily by Barbara Pendrell and her team fielding questions, g at he r i ng a nd d i st r ib ut i ng pl aye r s we lcome b ag s, a nd tournament office questions/ procedures throughout the week. While our regular Pro Shop staff, Gary and Diana can efficiently handle Racquet Club duties.” Where there ever high-level players participating in this tournament? KL: “During my 14 years with the tournaments, we have had several. The biggest star during my time was Robby Ginepri. He reached a world ranking of #15. He retired from the tour in February and played in our event that November. There have been countess Division 1 college players who have participated. Several of which also spent time on the Pro tour. Roy Barth is another good example. He was on tour and had a 5-set match with Bjorn Borg at the 1973 U.S. Open.” Have any Father or Son players m o ve d i n t o T he L a nd i n g s because of our pristine courts? KL: “Dean Dancer is a regular i n t he tou r n a ment w it h h is father, Doug. Dean & his wife Kelly lived in The Landings for several years. I know other players have met with realtors to look at properties.” Do you have a favorite “father and son” tennis memory of your own? KL: “My father made me the tennis player that I am today. He and I spent countless hours on the courts over the years when I was growing up. We never played any family tournaments together; however, one of my earliest childhood memories was at the courts with my father. I would sit at the edge of the court and play with my toys while my father played a match. When he was finished, he would bring me out on the court and toss balls for me to swing at.”

A Trailblazer among us By Lisa Codianne Fowler Imagine a life of silence. Landings resident Barbara Chertok knows the sounds of silence all too well. A nationally recognized advocate for the hearing impaired, she is one of 48 million people in the United States who suffer from hearing loss. After suddenly losing her hearing at age 21, her hope soared when a respected neurologist assured Chertok that her hearing would return within six to eight weeks. He was wrong. The silence remained. Seven months later, a hearing aid allowed her to hear loud sounds and a tiny bit of her own voice. “I could be in a room with 100 people, and if I closed my eyes, it would seem like I was alone,” she explained. “Luckily, I was a strong person,” Chertok confided, explaining that she confronted the issue head on. After marrying her husband in 1961, the young couple moved from Boston to a Washington, D.C., suburb. They had two children. After her son and daughter became school age, Chertok began her advocacy and volunteerism for people with hearing loss. “This would become my life’s work,” she wrote in the Hearing Health Foundation’s magazine, “Hearing Health.” Working with the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in

Barbara Chertok

Washington, D.C., Chertok served on committees and was certified as a reverse oral interpreter. When speech-to-text technology came into play, she began to sell telecommunication devices for the deaf. “These devices are called TTYs, and the deaf or hard of hearing person types messages over the telephone lines with the person they are communicating with. There is no speech involved,” Chertok stated. “I sold them to my doctor, dentist, lawyer, insurance agent, and even to the White House. Necessity is the mother of invention,” she quipped. In 1979, Chertok became active in the Hearing Loss Association of America, volunteering at the national office and writing for the group’s magazine. In 1982, while

serving on a Maryland jury, she became the first juror in the state with hearing loss. She served with an oral interpreter at her side in the jury box and gained national media attention. “The media called me a “trailblazer,” she recalled. Throughout the case, she noted, “my interpreter sat in the jury box with me while I read his lips during four days of testimony.” Local media covering the case reported on her story. “I was thrilled to appear on the evening news, and the following day in the Washington Post and other newspapers,” she said. In 1990, Chertok wrote to President George H.W. Bush and asked if he and his wife Barbara would join her in promoting lipreading. She reminded him that “Your signature on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) will help ensure that people with disabilities can be a part of the mainstream of society.” Several weeks later, President Bush signed the ADA into law. “Thirty years on, I still like to think my postscript made a difference,” she said with a smile. At age 56, 35 years after losing her hearing, Chertok learned the cause of her hearing loss. The diagnosis was Cogan’s Syndrome. It is, Chertok said, “an autoimmune disease and not usually described as a “rheumatic disease.” The

National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) reports on their website that Cogan’s Syndrome “is defined as a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown origin, an autoimmune disease, characterized by bilateral sensorineural hearing lo s s, ve st ib u l a r s y mp tom s, inflammatory ocular manifestations with variable risk of developing into a systemic disease.” At age 62, technology enabled Chertok to regain her hearing. “Thanks to a wonderful surgeon in Tampa, I got my cochlear implants when I moved to Florida,” she recalled. Cochlear implants, Chertok states, are not “actually implanted in the ear canal itself.” She explained that “a receiver is implanted in the mastoid area behind the ear and an electrode array is implanted in the cochlear.” After returning home, she listened to a recording of Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable.” “To be able to hear music again brought tears to my eyes,” she said. “I was thrilled his voice sounded as I had remembered it.” With her hearing restored, an energized Chertok went on to found two Florida support groups while continuing her advocacy, mentoring, lecturing, writing and volunteering. In 2014, Chertok

was a guest on Morgan Fairchild’s TV show, “Baby Boomers in America,” and demonstrated the InnoCaption app. The app, according to the company’s website, www.innocaption.com, is “the only mobile app that offers real-time captioning of phone calls through live stenographers and automated speech recognition software.” Close to 20 years ago, Barbara Chertok made The Landings her home. She was drawn to the community’s beautiful landscaping and central location. Over the years, she has enriched the community by bringing in numerous instructors in Jazzercise, Zumba, and line dancing. A classically trained opera singer and multi-genre music aficionado, Chertok’s music memory served her well throughout decades of silence. Today, she is once again able to fully enjoy the music and arts that she loves. She serves as Vice President of Programs for the Sarasota Music Club and is a member of the Sarasota Opera Guild, the Jazz Club of Sarasota, the Sarasota Artist Series Concerts, and the Sarasota Ballet Friends. Barbara Chertok’s indomitable spirit and commitment to those with hearing loss continues to inspire others to truly believe and never give up.

Julia Meek Parks

Julia Meek Parks passed away in Sarasota on Tuesday, September 29th at the age of 83. Julie was preceded in death by her sister Judith and her brother Joe. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William Parks, her four children: Bill Jr (Debbie), Vickie, Joe, and Kelly (Chris), her grandchildren: Billy Parks III, Samuel Parks, Patrick Fair, Kevin Parks, Nola Parks, Conor Fair, Julia Parks-Diaz, Jennifer Groce, Kaitlyn Nelson and Robbie MacNamara, and three great grandsons: Inman Parks, Will Parks IV, and Brooks Parks.

“20 MINUTES TO A STRONGER YOU”™ ITS’ TIME TO EVOLVE!

Born in Western Springs, Illinois, in 1937, Julie retired to Sarasota with her husband Bill in 1993. She was an avid reader and volunteer for numerous women’s causes, and enjoyed tennis and bridge. Her father perhaps best described her in her late teenage years as “Mercurial, and with great depth”... none of that changed throughout the course of her life. We remember her as a woman capable of great love, a sharp wit, and a lifelong commitment to equality and justice for all people. Julie will be greatly missed

by all those she leaves behind, and our grief is eased by the countless blessings of having her in our lives, and the kindness and support of her many friends to our family at this difficult time. There will be a private family service in Sister Bay, Wisconsin in November. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made in Julie’s name to either the Sarasota Tidewell Hospice, T h e S a r a s o t a Wo m e n ’s Resource Center, or The Cat Depot in Sarasota.

Sarasota artist’s pottery: An ode to the Gulf Coast By Jane Bartnett Sarasota Artist’s Pottery: An OThe art of ceramics, or handthrown pottery, has become one of the fastest growing trends in today’s art world. For Gretchen Singh, a professional graphic artist who discovered ceramics after a successful career in the corporate world, it has given her a new world to explore. As one of 33 featured artists at the Coastal Flow ocean inspired design and decor store on South Tamiami Trail, near Stickney Point Road, Singh’s handmade pottery items are a customer favorite, according to Jesse Gill, Coastal Flow’s owner. “They’re kind of peaceful,” said Gill, as she held one of

Singh agrees and says that she finds “there is a renewed interest in things that are handmade and made here in America.” “Pottery,” ceramic artist Amelia Johannsen wrote, imbues “everyday objects with purpose and beauty; it gives them a soul. When an object is made by hand, you will care for it and cherish it.” As the growth of the website Etsy has shown, the pandemic has fueled growth in the world of handcrafted art. With the holiday season upon us, seasonal gift guides are reporting that handcrafted items such as handmade ceramic cups, dishes, vases,

Her “decorative and functional pottery” as she calls it, reflects the colors of the Siesta Key coastline in soft shades of blue, green and sand. Her handthrown clay designs range from mugs to small dishes, spongeholders, desk items, and larger vases and dishes. In addition to selling her wares at the Coastal Flow store, Singh is also a weekly featured artist at the Farmers’ Market at Lakewood Ranch, located at the Lakewood

Holiday toys for canines By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist

It’s the Holidays! Here are the Top Toys for your Canine Companions It likely comes as no surprise: your pup needs to play. But as obvious as that sounds, its importance may be even greater than we think. In fact, according to one Bristol University study, play is the key to your dog’s overall well-being. Among the many benefits, regular play can help a dog’s physical conditioning, combat canine obesity, provide mental stimulation, relieve boredom, and strengthen their bond with you, their pet parent. Additionally, it can help prevent behavioral issues like anxiety, aggression, whining, jumping up, or not coming when called. While it’s best for your dog’s development to play with you, your family, or other dogs, unfortunately there isn’t always someone available for a little roughhousing. And that’s why there are toys! Fun, interactive, and always ready for play, toys are a great way for your dog to enjoy many of the above benefits anytime they want. With the holidays upon us, DOGPerfect has created a list of the season’s best toys and how they can boost a dog’s health—so you can make sure you’ve got the perfect gift for the canine companions on your list.

Let’s Play Fetch

Nearly half of all dog owners say that “fetch” is their dog’s favorite game. Fetch allows your dog to burn a lot of energy, which aids conditioning and makes them less likely to misbehave or act out. Additionally, playing fetch can also strengthen the respect a dog has

Plus, with the option to stuff with snacks like peanut butter, KONG toys are a great way to deliver treats that can keep your dog busy.

Go Interactive

Speaking of keeping your good boy or girl busy, interactive toys are designed to ensure hours of play while pet parents are away. For example, ZippyPaws Burrow Hedgehog Den is a hide-and-seek toy that challenges your pup with finding three squeaky hedgehogs hidden in their den. Recommended by animal behaviorists, these types of puzzle toys are a great supplement when you can’t be there for your dog.

eco-friendly recycled materials. Regular play is fun and beneficial for pups and pet parents alike. It can challenge your dog both physically and mentally, help them blow off some steam, and provide an opportunity for you to both to bond. This holiday season, stop by your local independent pet retailer to find the terrific toys that will bring joy and delight for your favorite furry friend.

for its pet parent. When it’s time to play fetch, a classic tennis ball might get the job done – but why throw it when you can blast it? With the Nerf Tennis Ball Blaster, you can launch a ball up to 50 feet in the air for maximum fun. Plus, once retrieved, you can reload balls hands-free to avoid the slime and slobber.

Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota as part of a scholarship competition, SmartPetLove’s Tender-Tuffs Platypus is made with Tear Block Technology that can withstand even the most vigorous games of tug-o-war. With a Tender-Tuffs toy, your dog will enjoy hours of fun and repeated use—and those slippers will get a welcome break.

Time for Tug-o-War

Just Chew It

Another all-time favorite, “tugo-war” offers both a physical and mental challenge for your pup. As you’ve probably found, many dogs are willing to sink their teeth into whatever’s available for a little tugging match. Your slippers notwithstanding, we’ve got just the thing. Designed by students at

Labrador Retriever? Bichon Frise? Forget the slippers – your dog might be a toy wrecker, too. If your dog likes to play tough, KONG Company rubber toys are highly durable and designed with safety in mind. KONG has created a variety of options to accommodate light, average, or even the most powerful chewers.

Finally, when you can, try to buy toys that are made in the USA. Many of the top-rated dog toys are American made by companies that voluntarily follow the same FDA guidelines used for making children’s toys, helping them achieve top marks for safety. Additionally, American-made dog toys tend to be among the most durable. Made in Montana, West Paw’s Jive Ball makes fetch more fun. Sized to fit in a standard ball thrower, and safer and tougher than a tennis ball, Jive Ball’s odd shape and bright shades bring the excitement with easy-tospot colors and unpredictable bounces—even in the snow. Another option, Cycle Dog Potted Ivy, is an unstuffed, super tough plush toy ideal for dogs who like to shake their play things. Plus, it’s made in Oregon from

capitalize on playing your best and learning what you need to improve to get to that next level. When you play a player below your level, and you are much better than them then you can try to hit balls that they have a chance to get back, and in the process work on your shot accuracy and consistency so that you can still have good rallies. When I was about 14 years old and I was improving a lot, my coach set up a practice session with a 75 year old man and I wasn’t very excited (because I was young and naïve). I thought,

wow what a waste of my time. But what I learned was such an important lesson. If I could hit the ball near him, he wouldn’t miss. So that put pressure on me to watch the ball and time it well, so I could send it to him (working on my consistency) and pressured on me to execute my shots well. After that, I didn’t mind being on the court with anyone that had the love of the game, like I did. Because, now I know I can learn to improve my game practicing with any level player if I have the right attitude.

Did You Know Siesta Key has a GEMSTONE? It’s no secret that the sand on Siesta Key Beach is composed of 99% pure quartz. The crystalline white sand of Siesta Key is luxurious, soft, white and cool to the touch 365 days a year. This is why our beloved beach has been revered as one of the most beautiful in the world. Wanting to capture the experience and essence of Siesta Key beach was the goal of the proprietor of Silver City, Monica. “Tourists always wish they can somehow take their vacation memories with them,” so with this in mind, Silver City designed the Siesta Key Watercolor GemstoneTM. They were able to capture the colors of Siesta Key’s blue/ green water and put it into a quartz gemstone. This quartz gemstone is a fusion of the tropical colors that surround us. Just looking into the clear, beautiful gemstone will transport you back to our island paradise representing the sea, sky and beautiful sand of Siesta Key Beach. Silver City has now become a “Must Stop” destination for tourists (Currently named #1 shopping destination on TRIP ADVISOR on Siesta Key). Shining brightly among the cases of this uniquely mirrored store lies the much raved about Siesta Key Watercolor GemstoneTM. Every jewelry piece is designed and made by Silver City Sarasota. The staff of Silver City Sarasota is very proudof their unique collection and variety of designs in Sterling Silver and in 14K gold..

New local option for personal meal delivery service Chef Mike, a caterer and private chef service located in Gulf Gate has announced a personal meal delivery service to provide customers in the Sarasota-Manatee area with safe, great food, at affordable prices, and all with impeccable customer service. “Going to the grocery store during these times can pose a huge risk for infection, and deliveries from companies like UberEats can cost upwards of $30 a meal,” claims Chef Michael Donnerstag, owner of Chef Mike. Comparatively speaking, Chef Mike offers his delivered meals for $16.75 a plate. “We do not charge delivery fees, gratuity, and there no hidden percentages for the software company,” said Chef Mike. “Other meal delivery services charge percentages for the software company, the delivery driver, and a convenience fee.”

Lower cost doesn’t mean lower quality of food. In fact, the Johnson and Wales educated chef takes quality very seriously. “Our meals are made with the highest quality meats and vegetables available,” said Chef Mike. “We use locally sourced ingredients and all our food is prepared fresh and delivered the next day.” A recent Yelp review confirmed not only the quality of the food but also all the other attributes Chef Mike is committed, too. The reviewer wrote: I have been using Chef Mike’s meal delivery service for about 3 weeks, and I get 5-6 dinners a week. I’d give him a rating of 6 out of 5, if I could. His meals are invariably nutritious, delicious , and attractively presented. There is plenty of food for a filling dinner for one. It is like going to a good restaurant each night. All I have

tried a number of the national meal delivery services like Freshly. Chef Mike beats those by a country mile. Try them for a week. I am confident you’ll be hooked. Every Thursday, Chef Mike changes his menu for the following week. All meals are a single portion except for the family meals that offer 4-6 portions. Ordering is due by 4 p.m. to assure next day delivery. All food is prepared fresh the day before and arrives cold. Heating instructions are included to guarantee a delicious experience. Chef Mike plans to expand his meal delivery business to holiday meal delivery and athletic meal preparation. In fact, he offered a Thanksgiving holiday feast for one or for the whole family. With Chef Mike, you can now order for the whole week and forget about having to make dinner plans. All you need to do is simply chose, heat, and eat.

Paradise Dermatology

A practice defined by its innovation and compassion.

The importance of keeping your skin healthy cannot be overstated. It is your body’s largest organ and your first defense against infection, environmental exposures and the outside world. Your skin also tells your story. It provides a window into your overall health. Dermatology practitioners are skilled in treating all forms of skin issues – from breakouts and itchy rashes to skin cancers, including melanoma. They can also recommend treatments to improve the look and feel of the skin, including lasers, peels and injectable treatments. Led by Dr. Michelle Pennie, Paradise Dermatology offers compassionate,

advanced care for a range of both medical and aesthetic dermatological needs, including full-body skin checks, acne and other chronic issues, Mohs skin cancer surgery, as well as a variety of revolutionary cosmetic treatments. In 2012, Dr. Pennie took over a solo practice in Englewood from a retiring physician. She had moved to Sarasota a year prior and was ready to stay put after moving her twin boys from Atlanta and then St. Louis for her training. While there was a great opportunity for her to join the faculty at the University of Florida, she decided to call Sarasota home. Acquiring the practice allowed her to

build a business based on her values – patient centered, compassionate, caring and family-friendly. This approach brings a blend of personal attention and expertise that is loved by patients. As such, Paradise Dermatology has expanded from a small five exam room clinic to its two modern offices in Sarasota and Englewood. The team includes board-certified Dr. Chelsea Duggan, three Physician Assistants, two Nurse Practitioners, and over 30 staff – several of which have been with Dr. Pennie since the beginning. Medical dermatology requires patience and innovation along with a thirst for lifelong learning and exploration. Dr. Pennie is a board-certified dermatologist and a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. In fact, she is one of only a handful of dermatologists on the west coast of Florida to complete a year-long fellowship training program in Mohs micrographic surgery. This procedure is considered to be the most effective treatment for most types of skin cancer. Additionally, she is skilled in reconstruction, so she is able to

surgically remove all the cancer cells and repair the defect in one visit. Dr. Chelsea Duggan focuses her practice on the art of medical dermatology and aesthetic dermatology. She enjoys treating patients of all ages, from young kids to our oldest citizens. She oversees the team who provides medical dermatology services as well as aesthetic treatments. Aesthetic dermatology treatments continue to be in high demand for their consistent results with minimal downtime. The highly trained and experienced professionals at Paradise Dermatology offer the latest in scientific technology and advancements. They take the time to meet with each patient to develop a customized plan based on individual goals and expectations. They use precise techniques to provide a non-invasive approach to anti-aging, delivering consistently optimal and notable results. Some of the aesthetic services offered include Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling, Plaxpot plasma resurfacing, Broadband Light (BBL), Excel V vascular laser and Laser Genesis. These can combat the signs of aging by tightening and smoothing the skin, stimulating collagen production and naturally decreasing wrinkles

and sagging skin – all with minimal downtime. They can also address a wide range of complexion concerns, including redness and brown spots, to restore a more youthful appearance. The results can be dramatic, but natural and long-lasting. Keeping your skin healthy is essential. At Paradise Dermatology, they believe that ensuring your ongoing skin wellness requires a comprehensive, compassionate approach where medical, cosmetic and surgical experts collaborate to bring patients the highest level of care. “We aim to make all our patients feel better about their skin and about themselves,” said Dr. Pennie. “Whether it is a skin cancer screen or a cosmetic procedure, our patients feel comfortable and confident in their treatment.” Paradise Dermatology is currently accepting new patients at their locations in Sarasota and Englewood. To schedule an appointment, visit ParadiseDerm.com or call 941.921.4131 (Sarasota) or 941.474.8811 (Englewood).

Terry and Larry Flemming, former Landings residents

Terry Flemming’s fudge always turns out right. She discovered this fool proof recipe that only takes a few minutes to prepare-- after pleading for a copy, luckily, she is sharing it with us!

Fudge with Chocolate Squares or Chocolate Chips and Condensed Milk Ingredients: 16 oz. semi-sweet chocolate squares or 16 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips. (Note a supermarket package of chips is only 12 oz.) 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated). 2 tsp. Vanilla 1/2 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped, optional. In a large microwave-safe bowl add chocolate and milk. Microwave on high for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes or until chocolate is almost melted. Remove from microwave. Continue stirring about a minute until chocolate is completely melted. Stir in vanilla and

Healthy Holiday Snacks

Thinking about healthy holiday snacks to have on hand when friends stop by, or just for a “nosh” at home when nobody’s looking? Here are some ideas:

prepared nuts, if using. Quickly spread in a pre-greased 8 or 9 inch square pan as it begins to “set” quickly. (If not using a microwave, put chocolate and milk in a medium size pan and heat slowly on stove, careful not to burn, stirring constantly till chocolate is melted. Then, continue as above. Cover tightly and store in refrigerate until firm. Cut the amount you choose into 1-inch squares and serve. (suggestion: place each cut piece in little paper containers). For Fun Variations: Stir in 1/2 cup toasted coconut along with vanilla and nuts (can substitute chopped almonds or chopped pecans for walnuts). Drop 6 teaspoons of peanut butter on top of fudge as soon as it is spread in pan. With a knife, swirl the peanut butter through fudge slightly marbling.
