David Rovine Sarasota resident David Rovine is more than a Baltimore Orioles vice president. He’s an Orioles fan whose memories of the team date back to their glory days of the late 1960s and 1970s. He was often at old Memorial Stadium, the team’s home from 1954, when the franchise moved to Baltimore from St. Louis, and through 1991. Memorial Stadium is long gone. Rovine is still an Orioles fan and other fans might bump into him during spring training at Ed Smith Stadium, the team’s year round Florida home. Rovine, who resides in The Landings in Sarasota, has an office at the stadium. “That’s where I hang my hat,” Rovine said. He does a lot more than hang his hat or sit in the office. Rovine’s full title is Vice President of Orioles-Sarasota. He’s in charge of stadium operations not only during spring training but year round. When the Orioles play Grapefruit League games in their 7,500-seat stadium, fans will likely see Rovine wandering the facility. He’ll be checking on everything and making sure things run smoothly from the ticket takers to the parking lot attendants to the ushers. “My passion is always taking care of the customer,” Rovine said. That’s something he knows about from his work in other businesses. He previously was the general manager of the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg for four years and prior to that was the general manager of the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan, Ill. He also spent nine years as director of marketing at Gulfstream Park, a horse racing venue in Hallandale Beach on Florida’s east coast. So, no matter if it’s touring company of “South Pacific” or a horse race or a comedian or Grapefruit League game between the Orioles and Red Sox,

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss all safety and security issues related to motor vehicle infractions at The Landings. This meeting provides an opportunity for ALL residents to discuss this very important issue. The meeting will be held in the Lakeside Room Rovine’s mission is taking care of the customer. He knows people have more entertainment options than ever and if the experience at the theater, track or ballpark is unpleasant they might not come back. He wants fans to keep returning. Now, the priority is baseball and the Orioles. Ask the 66-year-old Rovine about the old days when he was a boy or a young adult and he’ll rattle off great names in Oriole history. Brooks Robinson. Jim Palmer. Boog Powell. He recalls the 1966 World Series, when the Orioles swept the Los Angeles Dodgers. He knows the Orioles once had four 20-game winners in one season. It was 1971 and the pitchers were Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally and Pat Dobson. To put that in perspective there were only three 20-game winners in all the majors last year. Continued on page 15

Finance committee chair, Don McMurray anticipates the LMA will likely report a surplus of funds at the end of the year. The committee will meet to determine possible uses of the funds and report these recommendations to the board. Three residents have still not paid their yearly assessment and two have not paid outstanding fees. The outstanding debt created by this is just over $6,000. These accounts have been turned over to the LMA attorney for processing and debt collection. McMurray reported his committee has reviewed a request to fund the completion of the

She expressed concern about the County responsibility for the primary drainage system through lakes one and two and the Cloisters Treehouse Creek to the bay. A new drainage problem has been discovered along the perimeter wall across the street from 5031 Kestrel Park Dr. The LMA will work with the school board and engineer Kurt Jensen to resolve the problem as soon as possible so the wall does not collapse.

LMA Candidates Each of the candidates pretty much covered the ground covered in their background material as printed in the December Landings Eagle. Additional questions from the audience ranged from whether they lived in condominiums or homes, what particular interests they had regarding improvements and why they chose to live in The Landings in the first place. The Landings Eagle representative asked each to comment briefly on their philosophy of management and attitudes towards transparency and Florida’s sunshine rules. Candidates receiving the top five number of votes will serve normal terms on the board, the sixth highest vote recipient will serve the one year unfulfilled

term of Truman Menefee. In another report the chair of the security and safety committee detailed for the Association presidents the committee’s recommendations to the LMA for traffic and security rules. They were detailed at the last LMA board meeting. Please check that meeting report for details. Included is one likely controversial provision, to establish a universal speed limit within The Landings of 17 miles an hour with no variation on any street. The chair did say 17 miles an hour was open to discussion, as it was reached fairly arbitrarily. Bill Whitman, president of the Landings Homeowners
Association spoke briefly about his concerns for passing firm rules on speeding, its enforcement and ultimate penalties for repeat offenders. He also mentioned the need for nighttime walkers and runners to wear some type

Below are the four candidates running for election for the first time:
The Landings Eagle is seeking an editor Doug Day: “I want to serve on the LMA board because I email inquiries to have the time and desire to volunteer. I have run a citrus business islandvp@verizon.net with my brother in Myakka City for 20 years. I also have a 5 year-old daughter who counts on me for bold adventures with soft landings, pardon the pun. I don’t want to get on the board to change anything, only to help our neighborhood be a nicer place to live.”
Neil Goldman: “I have been a resident of The Landings for over ten years, and now that I have become a full time retiree, I want to help ensure that the community I plan to call home for the rest of my life continues on its current path. As an attorney my strong suit is being able to see all sides of an issue and hopefully I can help the Board find reasonable, common sense solutions to problems as they arise.” Michael Knupp: “I believe in giving back in a positive way to the community where I live. My past experience includes being a city councilor, a city finance committee member, and a zoning board member. I have been active in the nonprofit arena as a board member of my college alumni association, a regional music school and professional orchestra, and an advisor to an educational organization for the New York City school department. I would welcome the opportunity to continue my public service as a member of the LMA board.” Joan Lowery: The Landings Eagle was unable to connect with Joan Lowery before her trip to India. 941.349.0194 • www.islandvp.com ISLAND VISITOR PUBLISHING, LLC

LHA Meeting Notes The board approved requests for the exterior colors of two homes and the replacement of a roof on Pine Harrier Circle. It also approved the replacement of driveway pavers on Peregrine Point Drive. It requested further information on the plans for landscaping at the front of a residence on Peregrine Point Drive and reviewed the minimal progress with respect to violations on Peregrine Point Circle E. Letters of violation were to be sent to owners of properties on Landings Lane. It called a Special Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Association
on January 27, 2015 to meet with the tenant of a residence on Peregrine Point Circle East to review the lack of timely correction to violations on the property. Another meeting between board members and the Association’s drainage consultant to review solutions to a Kestral Park Place drainage problem will take place in January. The Annual Meeting of Members of the Association will be on February 12, 2015 followed by an organizational Board Meeting to elect officers for the forthcoming year.

without delay. The official opening of our new gazebo originally scheduled for Thursday, January 15, with a ribbon cutting, champagne and snacks was cancelled due to weather. The rescheduled date is Saturday, February 7, at 4:00 PM. The new structure situated on the Intercostal Waterway is truly a valuable asset and an enhancement to The Landings. We hope residents will use the new enhanced facility to gather with friends, do some fishing and other celebrations. We expect several road repairs to be completed by the middle of March. Also, in late February or early March additional repairs will be made to the bridge leading to the gazebo and will necessitate the closing of that route for a day or two. Part V - Landings at 25 – Encore When The Ramar Group laid out The Landings they undertook development and construction of The Carriage Houses and The Treehouses. At the same time they laid out the plats for the approximately 229 home sites available. We say approximately because nine of them are technically not in The Landings but along Camino Real. Those sites are not subject to either the LMA or LHA authority except as they relate to approval of exterior changes including roofs and roofing materials. Additionally several lots have been combined over the years resulting in 218 lots actually under the jurisdiction of the LHA. Ramar partner and Developer Bob Morris tells The Eagle he desired diverse architecture for individual homes so laid out exacting specifications for homes but turned over development to individual builders The “specifications”
remain today as the covenants determining standards for design, lot lines, setbacks, construction materials and maintenance standards. They are enforced today by The Landings Homeowners Association. Time has taken its toll on many of the homes. On Kestral Park Terrace, for example, five of the seven homes were among those constructed in the early days of The Landings. All five have had roofs replaced. Interior renovations, some

completely rebuilding kitchens and baths are common. The rewards in substantial appreciation, especially in the “boom” real estate years more than paid for property improvements. Like the Carriage Houses and Treehouses, the high interest rates and other new communities around Sarasota made sales difficult during the recession. Initial prices are difficult to determine as most are recorded in country records as the price of the lot itself. But, in the long term, home purchases in The Landings have proven to be good investments. Those who bought nearing the peak of the real estate boon in 2006 did suffer if they had to sell in the following 6 to 10 years. It appears the last couple years have

David Rovine Those were great years for the Orioles, who won four pennants and two World Series between 1966 and 1971. But Rovine’s alltime favorite Oriole is Hall of Fame shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. He recalls sitting in the stands at Orioles games in the 1960s with his parents and brother, Harvey, who is now a professor of theatre at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Although a baseball fan, Rovine grew up in a theatrical family. “My father was a standup comedian as a young man,” he said of his father, Milton. Rovine attended Towson State and majored in theatre arts and then pursued acting and directing. “I was a successful, struggling, starving actor,” Rovine said with a laugh. Then he went into management. Now, Rovine is at Ed Smith

Stadium, which opened in 1989 but underwent a dramatic renovation that was completed in time for 2011 spring training and completely changed the look of the stadium. No matter where he works some things remain constant
whether it’s a production of “Hamlet” a concert by Willie Nelson, a horse race or a baseball game. “I’m actually in venue management,” Rovine said. “The entertainment business. You still have to take care of the customer.” Baseball franchises have two distinct divisions – baseball operations and the business side. Baseball ops, as it’s called, takes care of drafting and signing players, scouting and player development and deciding who makes the team and setting the lineup and starting rotation. Rovine’s job has nothing to do with what Manager Buck Showalter does running the team. If a fan has questions about Showalter’s batting order, Rovine can’t do anything but be polite. “I always tell the staff that
we can’t control what goes on on that field, we can only take care of the customer’s experience and make sure they have a good time”. Rovine’s job is taking care of customers during spring training and the rest of the year when Ed Smith is used for other events such as baseball tournaments and concerts. But what Rovine and his staff can do is also important. “Every interaction with one of my staff members is a touch point,” Rovine said. He wants every interaction between the fans and staff to be positive. Whether the Orioles win or lose can’t affect those interactions. Rovine also oversees activity at Twin Lakes Park, the Orioles’ other minor-league facility east of Interstate-75. Those fields and the stadium are rented out to youth baseball organizations in the summer and fall. Running the stadium and Twin Lakes requires a yearround staff of 25, Rovine said.
Game days during spring training when between 8,000 and 9,000 people might flock to the ballpark requires a staff of about 150. “It’s a huge business,” Rovine said. “I don’t think people realize.” It’s a business that generates millions of dollars every year for Sarasota County. “A hair under $60 million last year,” Rovine said. When the Orioles began training here in 2010 and they signed a 30-year lease. So they’re not going anywhere. But David Rovine is going places. During games don’t expect to see David Rovine in his office. “I walk constantly,” Rovine said. So if you attend a game this spring expect to see David Rovine somewhere in the ballpark. “I like to shake hands and greet people,” Rovine said. Just don’t ask him to give Buck Showalter advice on the Orioles lineup and starting rotation.

|Manager’s Report
First, I hope that everyone had a joyful holiday season. We had an unfortunate series of events that marred our member’s enjoyment of the pool and spa over the New Year’s weekend. Repeated spa equipment failure and inability to heat the pool because of filters clogged by sand that found its way into the pool kept both out of service for five days from New Year’s Eve through the following Monday. We continue to see court usage far heavier than in recent years. This and other considerations led the board to establish an ad hoc committee to review our guest policies and those for tennis clinic sign-ups. The committee recommended a set of revisions to the Club’s Rules & Regulations as published in its portion of The Landings Handbook. After review by the board with input from Kevin and Joe, the revisions were adopted at the January regular board meeting. Pending our reissuing of our portion of the Handbook, a copy of the revisions is available in the Pro Shop, will be on the Club’s section of The Landings website www.thelandingsofsarasota.com and will be included in the weekly e-mail from Kevin to those on his list. [If you are not on the list and wish to
Thank you to all the members that have paid their annual assessment already. For any of you that haven’t gotten to it yet, please note that late fees and interest will be added in February. I would like to see everyone avoid that if possible. Contact Kevin or Alice in the Tennis Pro Shop at 923-3886 if you have any questions regarding your bill. Season is in full swing for three more months. I strongly encourage members to call in advance for their tennis court reservations regardless of what time you are playing. We all know the mornings are busy; however, with league matches and routine afternoon maintenance, court availability can be at a premium in the afternoon or evening hours too. This is my eighth “season” as the LRC Manager and I can honestly say I’ve never seen

receive the weekly update, please give Kevin your e-mail address.] As another reminder, the use of courts and ball machine has grown substantially from last year. Reservations for play in the mornings, including Saturday and Sunday and for play in some evenings are really necessary. The Landings Learning Group had an outstanding kickoff in January with a record number of full season subscriptions. The series continues to be one of the Club events with the largest turnout. My thanks to Howard & Adrienne Feltman and their committee for their efforts in making this another enjoyable season. We had a good turnout at the Annual Meeting, with 169 present by proxy and an additional 34 present in person for a total of 48% of our membership represented. I was pleased to see the interest in our Club’s operations. As there was an uncontested election, the composition of your board has not changed. At the subsequent organizational meeting, the current slate of officers was reelected as well. So, the Club’s 2015 Directors and, where applicable, their operational areas are: Dick Bayles, President; Patricia Decker, Vice President and Landscaping; Nate Richards, Treasurer; Nancy Ferraro, Secretary; Rudy Blohm, Facilities; Carol Furlong, Tennis; and Peter Heijens, Membership.
Landings junior wins 941 tennis tournament On December 13, the finals for the 941 junior tennis tournament was held at the Laurel Oaks C.C. Landings resident, Jeffrey Cummings, age 10, won the Grand Masters tournament for 12U boys. Jeffrey trains weekly with Coaches Joe and John.
the courts busier. It’s nice to have this many active players around the Club every day. Once or twice a year I ask that members update their contact information. If your phone number or email has changed recently, kindly let us know in the Pro Shop. The Club has a new point of sale system with a membership database. Please take a moment the next time you come through the office to make sure everything is accurate. It is also helpful for us to have the phone number for your northern residence. Members often come in looking for their friends contact information up north and more often than not, I’m not able to find it for them. On January 27th, we had one of our famous pancake breakfasts. It was a great turnout as usual. Mountains of blueberry and banana pancakes were served. Thanks to Nelson & Dawn Smith and Erik Ostensjo for all their help in making the breakfast an overwhelming success. We plan to have another one at the end of March.

Social tennis, clinics, cardio, lessons, league matches and the ball machine - the courts are busy. That’s what I like to see. With March comes St. Patrick’s Day and once again we will have a Round Robin followed by traditional Irish Fare. Even if you don’t play tennis please join us for corned beef, cabbage and potatoes. Check the Pro Shop for the sign up sheet in early March for all the details.

Hope to see you there! As I mentioned in my last column the club has instituted a new cancellation policy as follows: Anyone signing up for clinics and/or cardio must cancel 48 hours in advance of the clinic/ cardio. Failure to do so will result in you being charged the fee. However, if there is a waiting list and your slot can be filled you will not be charged. Association Matters, Legally Speaking
By Vanda Y. Bayliss, Esq
|Amending the Governing Documents, Part II Last month we discussed why it might be appropriate to completely rewrite the governing documents for an older condominium or subdivision and how to begin the process. As noted, one of the key considerations is the cost. The Association may need to wait to undertake the project until it can be included in the annual budget. Meanwhile, a committee could still be appointed to review the governing documents and note what changes it believes are necessary or desirable. If there are provisions which have not been enforced for years, or provisions which have not had the intended result, now would be the time to consider eliminating, strengthening, or clarifying them. Once the amendment committee has highlighted the provisions it thinks should be amended it would be appropriate to discuss
the breadth of the project and the potential cost with the association’s attorney. Generally, to remove most references to the developer and bring the entire document up to date with current law, a complete restatement is necessary for older developments. The older the documents, the more likely the relevant statutes may override them. (For example, there are laws regarding xeriscaping and religious symbols that may supercede what is set forth in the declaration.) However, if a complete rewrite is not possible because of lack of finances or member support, the existing documents, as modified by the current law, will suffice. A few key amendments might address the most pressing problems instead. If the association does not already have an attorney willing to undertake a large scale amendment project, then
it might consider consulting a couple of attorneys before making a decision with whom to proceed. The association or committee could use the internet to locate attorneys who hold themselves out as representing associations, ask their property manager, or even consult with neighboring associations. An attorney who has represented numerous associations will be more likely to know which provisions of the governing documents cause the most problems and the best way to address various issues. At the initial meeting it would be reasonable to ask the attorney what experience he or she has representing associations in general and in amending and restating documents in particular; whether the attorney would be doing the writing him or herself and, if not, whether the attorney would oversee it; how long the project would likely
take; and, what fees or costs will be involved. Fees may be calculated on an hourly basis, a flat fee, or a combination of the two. It is important to pin down exactly what is included in a flat fee or in any hourly fee estimate. For instance, an attorney may offer an attractive flat fee but it may only include a standard “boiler plate” version of a declaration. Modifications to better address your unique needs may not be included in the flat fee. You will want to know whether the fee includes meetings with the committee, multiple revisions, attendance at a town hall meeting to explain the proposed amendments to the membership, preparation of proxies for voting, etc. Of course, you will also need to clarify whether the fees for amending the bylaws and articles of incorporation are included. Remember that the attorney has limitations. He or she will
not necessarily know the issues that have confronted your association over the years. This would be the time to address those issues, if possible. The better prepared the committee is with its list of issues that need addressing, the more likely the finished product will serve the needs of the association for years to come. Email vandabayliss@gmail.com with any questions.
What Better Subject for Valentine’s Day than Lips?
Lips are the portals that help us take in food, liquids and air. They are also important in communication, both verbal and non-verbal and let’s not forget they’re very important in relationships and for expressing love and affection. Lips need care especially in the heat and sunshine of our area. They tend to dry out and become cracked because they lack oil and sweat glands. They are also a clue to our overall health. Keep this in mind d for lip health...avoid or protect against dryness and the sun. n. ♥ Don’t lick them ♥ Avoid mouth breathing ♥ Stay hydrated ♥ Protect with frequent applications of thin coats of lip balm of at least SPF15. So, be good to yourself in 2014 and remember that anything that doesn’t get better in a week or so needs to be checked out..

THE LANDINGS EAGLE February 2015
Pet of the Month Hi, I’m “Jep”. I am a small Jack Russell Terrier and I will be 1 yr. old on Feb. 5. Just recently moved here from rural Indiana. I came from a 100 acre horse farm with free roam and lots of hunting. I am trying to adjust to being strangled down by a leash. It is better than having to stay in the sub zero temps of Indiana, but that’s about the only thing. I have managed to exterminate over 13 little lizards and an opossum that was trying to get in someone’s trash. I like to escape and go hunting whenever possible. If you see me and I’m not in tow, either
Jep take me to Kevin at the racquet club(he has good dog treats) or throw me in the door at 5327 Landings Blvd. Just don’t tell on me, I’m trying real hard to be a good dog and protect The Landings from all of these wild animals.
If you haven’t seen your pet in our column, please submit two paragraphs about them along with their photo (jpg). We will highlight them in a future issue. Simply email your contribution to islandvp@verizon.net

THE LANDINGS EAGLE February 2015
The Landings Photo Gallery By Robert C. Manteiga As everyone knows, we have a wide variety of wildlife here at The Landings. In addition to the spectacular array of resident and migrating birds, there are a number of interesting fourlegged creatures. Residents have spotted armadillos, red foxes, raccoons, opossums, coyotes, and, of course, those ever more brazen feral cats, that are slowly but surely decimating our gecko population. I remember seeing, shortly after moving here, a bobcat walking on the wall behind our condo. Then there are the more frightening no-legged creatures like the black racer snake, water moccasin, and brown water snake. I’ve seen all three. Landings resident, and avid wildlife
photographer, Gary Warren has photographed a number of these critters. Here’s what he has to say: These animals were photographed within fifty feet of my back door! The nesting dove with chicks was three feet from my front door. Sadly, the day after I took this shot, I spotted a crow outside my window. I ran to the front door but it was too late as the nest was already empty. We certainly do have wildlife spotting opportunities in The Landings! Gary P.S. One of the photos shown here appeared in an earlier issue of The Eagle, but it is such a lovely shot that we’ve decided to print it again. Please send your photos to roberto@uri.edu

This winter the number of events, for which coverage by photographers is desired, has increased significantly. As a result, additional volunteer photographers are needed. The time requirement for most events is just 15-20 minutes (unless you want to stay longer). Qualifications: basic ability/knowledge of photography and the possession of a “decent” camera (something more sophisticated than a “Brownie”). My Time’s Not Your Time By Albert L. Weeks (Professor Emeritus of NYU)
Older readers here probably remember Rudy Vallee’s singing “My time is your time.” Nice thought but... Each of us possesses our own time if for no other reason than no one of us stands in the same spot under the Sun. Our personal clocks are built on Solar Time. In fact, worldwide we use so many “times” it’s a wonder we can agree at all on what time it is. In personal terms, everyone knows that each of us ages in a strictly individual way. Chronology, as we all know, is not the only measure of a person’s age. But beyond that...We’re in a New Year of 2015. Yet not all civilizations or time-recorders recognize our Western definition of”year.” So, when someone, asks you, “What time is it?” ask him back: “Which time are you talking about?” There are at least five kinds of time--yes, at “any one time.” Universal Time, in astronomy, geography, etc. It uses the “Prime Meridian” at Greenwich, UK, as its 0-degree base mark longitude. That is the world’s primal “noon” under Solar Time. Our 24hour days together with years, centuries, and millennia actually end and begin at 180 degrees East Longitude in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. That’s a good place to put the “International Dateline.” No country would like to have New Year’s Day, the next year, begin “just across the street” in the same town, down the road, or in some other part of the same country. That would be rather upsetting, to say the least. As to why a small town near London finally became the Prime Meridian in the late 19th century stems from several factors. First, England’s global seafaring and naval predominance gave it prime importance as a time-setter. So did its advanced railroads and its native Newtonian science. British science led most of the world in metrics even if the
26
French were the first to adopt the Metric System. Yes, Paris complained at first over the Greenwich, England, location for 0 longitude. Yet French scientists could not come up with any better location. Instead, they proposed a remote French colonial island far south in the Atlantic Ocean. Note the other skyward clocks: Lunar Time, upon which the Oriental and other calendars based according to the Moon’s approximate 28.5 day regular revolution about the Earth. Another celestial clock is Sidereal Time. It measures time by the “slow-moving” stars. There are also varieties of Solar Time besides our Time Zone determinations. There’s man’s Historical Time, as in the expression “since recorded time.” This includes geological, human, Biblical, etc, demarcations of time. Most often, Historical. Time is broken up into 100year segments, or centuries. Why centuries? This evidently stems from mankind’s general preference for multiples of fives, which is based on our five fingers. Most everyone finds it easy to enumerate by rote 5, 10, 15, 20, etc., on up to 100 and beyond. Yet people hesitate when enumerating a series like 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and more hesitantly with 7, 14, 21, 28, etc., which unlike our 10-based system requires a degree of thought in order to rapidly tick off the series. (By far the handiest series, preferred by the Babylonians of ancient Mesopotamian Iraq was 6, 12, 18, 24. But that’s another story, numbers that are neatly divisible by 2 sand other dividers.) Then there’s God’s Time, or Eternal Time. It never runs out. This is the imaginary “infinite series”of Nows, or Instants, with no beginning and no end. And with no observable data to support it. It’s a no-no in modern mathematics. In the America of 1880s,
THE LANDINGS EAGLE February 2015
railroad building was accelerating as attempts were made to set up a Standard Time Zone in the east. But townspeople within the zone complained that they desired to continue with “God’s time,” as local people called it. In other words, their local time was set by a sun dial. These protesters had a point. Across any Time Zone of 15 degrees (or one hour of Solar Time), there will be, after all, large differences in time between locales within the same zone. These differences are “fudged over” by conveniently assuming the useful fiction that everyone across the 1,000-mile wide Time Zone recognizes the same time. Like any fiction (legal fictions included), this presumed homogeneous zonal time is obviously untrue as to the actual location and time of each place in the zone. Nevertheless, the pretense, the presupposition, of everyone’s having identical time throughout the zone is extremely buseful. Railroad and airline time tables would be impossible without zoning. Imagine being on a train or plane and having enroute to change your watch every 10 minutes so as to conform to local, so-called “God’s time.” Grammatical Time, employed in everyday speech (except in Chinese and some other languages) . In English these are usually classified as simple present or past tense; present continuous; perfective and past perfective; and various, at least four, future tenses. All these tenses are illustrated, by the way, in Pieter the Elder Bruegel’s paintings of winter landscapes. In them (see accompanying reprois) we see people and places as viewed from various time perspectives. For instance, the Dutchice-skaters illustrate “simple present,” or repetitious activity, as when we say: “The newspaper comes at 7 a.m. every day.” In the painting, the skaters go round
Pieter Brugel the Elder: Winter Landscape
Henri Matisse: Piano Lesson and round endlessly. Yet in the immediate foreground, a bird is flying (present continuous) while a sign suspended on a tavern (in his “Return of the Hunters”) is dangling (present continuous) as the wind dislodged (past) it. Circular, as measured tick-tock time (as with the metronome in Matisse’s “Piano Lesson”-- see attached
repro). Stadium time is like wise suspended, artificial time. So is “Dad’s Time”: as in “I’ll give you ten minutes to clean up your room!” Then there is back-and-forth, pulsating atomic time as reflected per the antenna at Boulder, CO, used by some people to keep their watches accurate. aweeks11@comcast.net
Artist of the Month
By Diana Colson
|Siesta Key Artist, Jan Metzler
Artist Jan Metzler and her husband, Don, have been Siesta Key residents for 27 years. Early in her career, she focused on entering juried art festivals. This focus has allowed her to make an excellent living doing what she loved, which is painting in oils, and later in watercolors. A native of Michigan, she started out at Henry Ford Community College, transferred first to the University of Michigan, and then to Macomb Community College. She studied art with several teachers, and speaks most highly of Sister Kuri Matasuki, who also taught at St. Paul’s Academy in Grosse Point. Her interest in painting began when her aunt and cousin talked her into taking an art course in Southgate, Michigan. Of that initial experience, Jan says, “My teacher, Gladys Collier, knew I could paint, but I didn’t. I began by doing paintings of paintings hanging in the Detroit Institute of Arts. That’s how I learned.” Don was very supportive, encouraging her to go to art workshops all over the country. He had been a die maker at Ford Motor Company before moving on to teach skilled trades at Macomb College, where all the automotive companies trained their apprentices. Realizing the extraordinary caliber of his wife’s talent, Don helped her out by doing all of her
matting and framing. Jan began to exhibit her work at art shows throughout the United States. “I did the Chicago Gold Coast Show for over 18 years and the Summer Art Fair in Ann Arbor for 39 years. Those two shows were my best markets.” After 20 years at Macomb, Don retired, and for the next 25 years the couple traveled to juried art shows in a 15 ½ foot box truck. Of this era, Jan says: “We rented a beautiful apartment in South Bend, June through September, and did the Midwestern art show circuit on every weekend. Once the shows were over, we traveled.” The Metzler’s lovely home on Siesta
Key is filled with artistic treasures gathered during these extensive travels to exotic lands. A prolific artist, Jan produced a huge body of work in a wide range of styles, some floral, some seascapes, some showing the Japanese influence of her muse, Sister Kuri Matasuki. “I had to go into prints because I could not keep up with the sales of my originals.” In the winter she painted and exhibited in Florida shows such as Siesta Fiesta, St. Armands Circle, Downtown Sarasota, Vero Beach, Naples, and Sanibel Island. She signed her work “J. Metzler” so as not to be labeled a man or a woman. At the peak of her career she was doing 40 shows a year. She had a huge following and sold to the same people year after year. As a result, her work now hangs in numerous corporate offices and businesses both here and in many foreign countries. Jan Metzler recently retired after 47 years. She still has a storeroom filled with originals and prints. In 2015 when Siesta Fiesta comes to the island, she plans on having a clearance sale of her beautiful art work. It will be held in her home, which is located one block off of Ocean Boulevard at Featherbed Lane, between the Village and ODA. This is a sale not to be missed, so look for the signs!

Siesta Key Round-Up St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church Pastor Msgr. Joseph Stearns announced his retirement. His official retirement is March 1st 2015. On Sunday, February 22nd, the 10:30 AM Mass will be in his honor. He has been the Pastor for the past seven years. Siesta Sand would like to thank Msgr. Joe for his service to our island community and wish him all the best in his retirement. Wild times after the Drum Circle, going native Sgt. Osborne reported at the Siesta Key Associations January meetings that after the Siesta Key Drum Circle ends a large group of young adults, over 400 gather at the Siesta Key Pavilion. These are Rave Parties with glow sticks taking over the Pavilion with DJ stands being setup. The Sheriffs do turn off the electric but the attendees are now bringing generators, which are not illegal. Recently over 75 went up onto the balcony deck and partied. Young women danced and stripped naked and jumped from the balcony into carts to the cheering crowd. According to Sgt. Osborne, this incident was videotaped and cell phone photos taken. So just remember: what happens on Siesta Key doesn’t necessarily mean it stays on the Key. Bluegrass Picnic at Turtles Beach Benny Kimsey’s annual Picnic will be held Saturday March 7 from Noon to 5 PM at Turtle Beach. The meeting is at St. Boniface Church on Siesta Key room F at 4:30 PM. Aaron Kaster, FDOT Project Manager and Brian Bollas, Public Information will be at the meeting to discuss the project and address project questions. Mangrove Point Road update The county has been working on repairs to the sewer lines and lift pumps on Mangrove Point Road since August of 2014. The county is installing new lift pumps to increase flow. The work has taken longer than anticipated due to working in such a small area along with the depth to drill to complete the job. Work should be completed by mid-March. No Access to Casey Key Visitors to our Island Paradise please note there is no access to Casey Key from Midnight Pass Road. As you travel south on Midnight Pass through the South Village, by Midnight Sea you will see the signs. Anyone not familiar with the area, traveling the 35 mph speed limit will probably have difficulty reading all 3 signs on one post and most probably will concentrate just on the speed limit sign. There are no other signs regarding this issue until you get to the end of Midnight Pass Road. Cars that miss that last sign wind up at entrance to the Pointe, which is a gated community, and have no option

but to try and back out. At night this could be very dangerous. The Siesta Key Association is working at providing better signage. SCAT adds temporary stops on Siesta Key Kendra Keiderling of Sarasota County Area Transit wanted all to know that SCAT has added numerous temporary stops on the southern end of Midnight Pass Road heading to and from Turtles Beach. Take advantage of the stops and avoid getting caught in traffic. Beach Bites is for sale Owner Jeff Madden recently announced the popular sandwich shop located in Siesta Key Village is for sale. The eatery specializes in gourmet sandwiches and a build your own sandwich board. The business is located at 217 Avenida Madera. Siesta Key beach project due for an end of the year finish Work is progressing quite nicely on the Siesta Key Public Beach improvements. The scope of the four-phase project included increasing and improving parking and pedestrian access, upgrading and expanding recreational opportunities and facilities and restoring the historic pavilion, which was originally built in the 1950s. According to Jason Bartolone, with Sarasota County media relations, Phase II of the project will be drawing to a close by the end of February or the first part of March. That phase has included such improvements as renovations on the east concession stand and a new parking lot, which was actually finished ahead of schedule. The contractor will cease work on the parking lot during Spring Break. This will maximize the number parking spots available. The west concession stand will be addressed as part of both Phases III and IV of the project. During construction, the park has and will continue to remain open, and all work is expected to be completed by the
end of the year. Beach University Program postponed Due to the construction activity at Siesta Key, the Beach University Program has been postponed until 2016. The main Siesta Key Pavilion where this program has taken place in March, for the past five years, will be under construction. Used Book Heaven for Sale The book store located in Siesta Key Village announced the business is for sale. The book store has been an institution on the Key for the past 20 years. The owners are retiring. For more information call Bob or Pat at 941-349-0067 or stop in at 5216 Ocean Blvd Suites D-E-F, serious buyers only. The Post Tropical Storm Debby project Orion Marine Construction received their Notice To Proceed in January to start renourishing Lido Beach. Featured Resturant |Lobster Pot serves up more than just lobster dishes If you love lobster New England style and fresh local seafood, this is one restaurant you simply must try when coming to Siesta Key. Fresh fish is purchased daily from local fishermen and their lobsters are delivered live straight from Bar Harbor and Boothbay in Maine. Owner, Glen Medeiros continues to use some of his father’s recipes including their signature award winning Baked Stuffed Lobster Duchess which is Maine Lobster made with a chunky seafood stuffing and baked in the oven. Both the Seafood Portugal, and the Salmon Rockefeller have been award-winning dishes at “The Taste of Sarasota” competition and have proven to be popular dishes. They also offer hearty homemade soups that are family recipes, including Lobster Bisque, New England Clam Chowder, and the wonderful Portuguese Kale Soup. This family owned restaurant has been in operation since November 2000. Medeiros is proud to carry on the tradition his Portuguese parents, Ralph and Adeline Medeiros, started back in 1939 in Provincetown, Massachusetts with the opening of the original Lobster Pot. “My passion was to open a restaurant like my parents, and now my two sons and I manage the restaurant with my wife up front as a hostess. I also have my two daughtersin-law working for us now. We are a proud third-generation family owning and operating our business.” With all the compliments and rave reviews this restaurant receives on a consistent basis, they know they are doing something right. Here is just a sampling of what is being said about Lobster Pot on Trip Advisor. “You won’t regret it.” The baked lobster duchess was about 35 dollars (market price) came with two sides and corn bread. worth it. Skip the fancy and come to this quaint place. The stuffing has scallops shrimp and crab! Amazing! Ask for Chris. “Yummy Lobster Rolls!!” Popped in to grab a quick bite and had THE MOST DELICIOUS Lobster Rolls for lunch. The waitress was great. Couldn’t do enough for us. Well worth dropping by for a quick, delicious, light meal. “Very Good Lunch” Went for lunch and had lobster rolls, done in New England fashion w/split bun. Also had kale soup which was excellent. Service was top notch. Definitely recommend. “Great food!” My husband is a big seafood lover and we visit Lobster Pot every time we visit Siesta Key. The lobster bisque and stuffed lobster are excellent! “Great lunch” This is a very good restaurant. It’s small but if you’re lucky you may get a table on the outside patio. Service was good. The lobster rolls were great. Better than
the ones we had in Kenibunkport!! Coleslaw was good and so was the key lime pie. Everything at the tables around us looked and smelled great too. Will go back. “Wow,fantastic” Small but busy restaurant and you can understand why as everything about it is superb. We had passed by a little earlier and there was queue outside. Came back later and we were lucky to have a seat within five minutes and were able to wait at the bar and have a drink. Food was massive. Pasta with slices of salmon and prawns on top was fantastic and I had to be helped to finish the dish!! A starter of calamari was very good and tasty. Local Fishing Report February is the last month of winter here in Sarasota. There will be days when it feels like spring is in the air. But, weather patterns will still be unstable, and fishing will follow suit. Being flexible and understanding how weather affects fish behavior will be the key to angling success this month. On many mornings the tide will be very low, especially with a hard northeast wind following a cold front. Under these conditions, fishing the afternoon high tide is often a better choice. Also avoid the areas near the passes after a blow, the cold and dirty water is not conducive to success. One species that anglers can count on most every trip in February is sheepshead. They bite better in cold, dirty water than most other species do. Also, redfish, black drum, and flounder will be caught on the same structure and using the same techniques that are effective for sheepies. Basically, any structure will attract sheepshead. From the rocks at the west end to the Siesta Drive Bridge on the east side, the north end of Siesta Key is a great area to fish. Deep water, docks, rocks, seawalls, and rip-rap will attract and hold fish. All of the bridges and docks in both Big Pass and New Pass may hold fish, as well as the docks and oyster bars south to Albee Rd. The preferred rig is a #1 live bait hook with a 24” piece of 20

Just roll out of bed...your hair looks great! Shampoo and towel dry.... and you’re done! The style is in the cut, not the blowdry, so you don’t have to fuss with your hair to look good... even with fine, limp hair... and my new steam color process creates richer brunettes and spectacular blondes. lb leader and just enough weight to hold bottom. Live and frozen shrimp, fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and oyster worms are the top baits. Shrimp are the easiest bait to obtain and work great. Sheepshead bite very lightly. Usually, it starts with several light “taps”. It is important not to move the bait at all, the fish will sense that something is wrong. Instead, wait for a steady pull, then reel fast and raise the rod tip sharply. Anglers fishing from Siesta Key beaches should do well when the surf is clear. Whiting will be abundant and silver trout, flounder, pompano, sheepshead, ladyfish and other species will hit live or frozen shrimp fished near the bottom. The deeper grass flats all throughout the area will be productive for speckled trout this month. Incoming tides a
couple hours before high tide are usually the best times to fish. Again, avoid the areas around the passes when dirty water is present. The area further south, from CB’s Saltwater Outfitters at Stickney Pt. to Marker #19 in Nokomis, stays protected, resulting in reliable February fishing. Cotee jigs, Rapala suspending plugs, gold spoons, and live shrimp under a popping cork are all effective baits. Pompano, jack crevelle, ladyfish, and bluefish all feed over the deep grass. Snook will be found in creeks and residential canals, along with redfish, drum, flounder, sheepshead, and jacks. Rapala X-Raps, scented soft plastics, and live shrimp will all produce fished near structure in creeks and canals. A slow presentation will be more productive in the cooler water.
Blooming this month: American Beauty Berry Callicarpa Americana How does one resist a beautiful plant that is native to our Florida conditions and produces bright green foliage and gorgeous fat purple berries which individually cling directly to its stems? It is a perfect fit for this season of giving as it provides beauty to our environment, generously feeds the birds and wild life, and can even be used for medicinal purposes, both externally as a
topical treatment and internally as a tea. Beauty Berry is easy to grow in our locale, adaptable to a variety of growing conditions and requiring little care. It is a fast grower, usually growing to 3-5 feet, sometimes taller in rich soil conditions. It survives in full sun to light shade with few pest problems. In the spring and early summer flowers in the pink color range adorn its branches. It makes a great gift, whether for the gardening novice or seasoned expert. It is truly Mother Nature’s gift to us all.
