The Landings Management Association, with the help of George Niel of Argus Management, arranged for Sarasota County to pick up the small red and blue recycle bins. Many residents took advantage of the opportunity to dispose of the old bins. There were volunteers at the north gate to receive them on January 13 and 14. According to Harvey Greller over 700 bins were collected. Norman Olshansky President of the LMA said, “Landings management association express its appreciation to all of our residents who brought their recycle bins to the north gate collection point last month. It was an extremely successful program. If you still have recycle bins that you do not want, they need to be taken to one of the waste management collection facilities.” The location sites are at 8750 Bee Ridge Road, 4000 Knights Trail Road, Nokomis or 250 South Jackson Road in Venice. Please note Waste Management Company will not dispose of the bins if they are left out with the trash on the regularly scheduled Wednesday pick up day. Landings resident Harvey Greller, emailed the county on January 21; “I would like to thank you for your quick response in picking up the bins. I know The Landings community appreciated your effort.” Manager Brian Usher of Sarasota County Solid Waste Collections responded; “I am glad to hear that everything worked out well. It was a partnership with Marc Bex at Waste Management that made it possible. I have a longstanding relationship with The Landings and have always appreciated working with the residents in your community. Quite a few years ago, I worked with Larry Lawrence on the household hazardous waste collection and everything has clicked ever since.” Greller asked the following question regarding the old bins, “Are they going to be recycled? Is there an alternative use for the bins?” Manager Brian Usher responded, “As a partner in the project, Waste Management is utilizing a corporate third-party recycling partner that will grind the bins into plastic

pellets that will be used to make future curbside bins and carts throughout the U.S.”

Notes for use with the new carts… Sarasota County, Wendi Crisp, the outreach coordinator for the Solid Waste Division spoke this past December at an open question and answer session discussing the do’s and don’ts to be placed in the new recycle carts. “A packet attached to each single-stream recycling cart has a card inside with details about the items that the county’s contractor will accept and those the company will not. In the absence of clear direction, a good reminder, is when in doubt, leave it out.” Another important factor with recycling, Crisp reported, is to avoid contamination. “People typically enjoy pizza because it is greasy and cheesy. However, the residue from the food means the box has to go in the trash,” said Crisp. Crisp explained, “Anything found among recyclables that does not belong with them, has to be removed from the conveyor and taken to

the landfill, where it must be weighed before it is buried. With the new single-stream system, we really want to get back to the basics; cans, cartons, glass, paper and plastic. We’re not taking anything different, anything new.” In what Crisp called the Show and Tell portion of the presentation, she held up a variety of items. She explained the plastic retail bags such as those from Publix can be taken back to the store, they should never go into the recycling cart. At the meeting, Crisp held up a long plastic bag and said, “Even though it has a symbol on it indicating it can be recycled, it will actually wrap around the equipment the county’s contractor uses. She went on to say “We call them tanglers, those materials have to be cut out of the machinery.” Crisp wrapped up the session responding to an audience member question regarding shredded paper. “They’re asking us to leave shredded paper out,” Crisp said. A special thanks to the following residents that volunteered: Harvey Greller, Steve Poyta, Gary Warren, Bob Manteiga, Jeff Durante, Burt Frank, Bob Goodman, Henry Rhodes and Ron Pierce.
