President’s Column It’s definitely summertime in The Landings. The snowbirds are up north and many of our year-round residents are enjoying special trips by air, cruise, car or train around the U.S and well beyond. Lots of activities are still taking place at the LRC. Check out the calendar of events on the Landings Website. Mark your calendars for the first Happy Hour this summer to be held on Wednesday, July 24th at 6 p.m. While you are checking out the website, note that the directory of residents is now complete. Check out your listing and let us know if you have anything to update. You can now search by name, by association and if the resident is a member of the LRC. Since last reported, there have been several new vendors recommended and posted on the Landings website. There is also a guide to hurricane preparedness posted on the LMA website page. There is a new neighborhood development east of the interstate off Fruitville road, which is called The Landing. We do not see a problem at this time, unless they market the properties as “The Landings”. We are sad to report that longtime Landings volunteer leader, Larry Lawrence and his wife Carmen, will be moving from The Landings to the Oaks. Larry will be giving up his current position as chair of The Eagle Editorial

By Norman Olshansky

Committee. Gordon Garrett has assumed that position. Larry was also chair of External Affairs. Marjorie Floyd will take over that committee. We wish Larry and Carmen all the best in their new community. The proposal for LMA to team up with LRC to provide Kayaks for use by residents has been put on hold based on concerns expressed by LRC Leadership. Alternative plans will be considered in the fall. We now have approvals from all of the Condo Associations adjacent to lakes, to provide the “ring of responsibility” around their lakes. Grass within three feet of the lake’s edge is allowed to grow in order to protect run-off of harmful fertilizer, chemicals and other elements that contribute to algae and red tide. We hope to re-initiate bike trips for Landings residents and friends in the fall. These morning rides, followed by lunch, are for beginner and average riders who enjoy a comfortable pace. We usually meet at the club around 10 a.m. and carpool with bike carriers to the locations selected for that day. Some of the places we ride include, Myakka State Park, Casey Key, South Legacy Trail, and new this year, The Red Bug Slough Park. If interested or if you want more information, contact me at the email at the end of my column. Your LMA Board exists to represent the interests of all residents of The

Landings. We want to hear from you. What do you think we need to do to maintain and improve “living in The Landings?” The next Board meeting for LMA has been scheduled for July 9th at 7p.m., in order not to conflict with the July 4th holiday. Wishing all an enjoyable, patriotic and meaningful July 4th holiday. Norman Olshansky President: Landings Management Association insidethelandings@gmail.com

In observance of the 4th of July holiday, the LMA has rescheduled their next meeting to July 9th at 7 p.m.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE July 2019

LMA meeting notes LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky, opened the meeting by giving his president’s report. He announced the following: • New alligator warning signs have been posted at all the lakes. • Two positions needed to be filled due to Larry Lawrence’s departure. Gordon Garrett has agreed to fill the editorial committee chair position and Marjorie Floyd has agreed to lead the External Affairs Committee. • The website now contains a complete directory of residents. This directory is more up to date than the Green Book. • Happy Hour is scheduled in July on the 24th. • Thank you to the members of the Environmental Committee for securing the Federal Grant. • The Board was informed of a new development off Fruitville Rd. And East of I-75 called The Landing. • The Landings Racquet Club (LRC) organization met and decided not to move ahead with the kayak proposal. It was rejected over need and liability issues. After this announcement, a brief discussion of the proposal occurred, but no decisions were made. • Olshansky thanked the leadership and residents of Landings South I and III for agreeing to allow a ring of grass around their lakes. Only one association has yet to decide and hopes to get approval. FINANCE REPORT Treasurer, Dick Bayles reported it’s too early in the year to forecast the status of finances by the end of the year. They are over budget in one category and under budget in two others, but at this point he sees no reason to be concerned. Receivables are slightly lower and all outstanding accounts have been turned over to the attorney for collection. MANAGERS REPORT Landings Manager, George Neil

By Trebor Britt

reported paying the usual monthly bills. A request to build a two car garage was forwarded to the Landings Homeowner Association and the request was denied. Not much information is available on concrete that had spilled on the road but an arrest was made by the Sarasota County Sheriff‘s Department near the entrance, which caused limited traffic congestion. The spilled and hardened cement has been removed. The Board is seeking volunteers to help install holiday lighting. Neil assisted FPL in locating fountain meters that were overgrown by vegetation. A complaint was made about too many signs on The Landings property. The Safety and Security Committee will look into whether some signs are redundant and can be removed. The Gazebo garbage can is expected to be repaired soon. SAFETY AND SECURITY Chairman Michael Knupp, reported speeding in The Landings continues to be a problem. Additional actions will be discussed and recommended to the LMA board. The committee asks residents to be aware of several ongoing construction and landscaping projects in The Landings. Be aware of your speed and lane blockages. Knupp thanked David Jacaruso for installing the new “Gator Warning” signs around the lakes. Residents recognize the signs were added in the interest of safety. After discussing the wages of the fulltime security staff, the board approved a proposal by the Security Committee to make changes in the security contract that would facilitate an increase of the hourly wage of full-time staff. LAKES Lakes chair, Michael Knupp reported on the following lake projects: • High heat and little rain is complicating the problem of lake algae.

The lakes’ contractor is working hard to stay ahead of the blooms. • Structural repairs on lake 3 and drainage pipes on Flicker Field Circle are scheduled to be repaired soon. Thank you to the residents of Carriage House 1 for their patience while the work is done. • A grant was received from the Sarasota Estuary Project for plants expected to help restore the lake 3 ecosystem while a cutback of chemicals to reduce algae is accomplished. Volunteers are needed in July to help with planting. Contact Mike Knupp or Maralyn Kaufman –David. • Some erosion control work has been completed on Lake 1. Correcting erosion control issues on lake 6 will be next.

LANDSCAPING Landscaping chair, Paul Weiner reported repairing an irrigation problem near the North Gate wall and replacing a sod timer. Four Brazilian Pepper trees and debris were removed from the Nature Trail and annuals were maintained at The Landings main entrance.

DRAINAGE Committee chair, Michael Knupp reported they are hopeful Will Howell from Howell Concrete will begin the spillway repair work on Carriage Lake followed by the Flicker Field Circle sinkhole repair soon. He also announced the completion of a drainage and street widening project on the corner of Kestral Parkway South. The repairs should eliminate the long-standing mud issue at this corner.

TECHNOLOGY Technology chair, Dick Bayles reported reoccurring decal reading problems at the North Gate. The committee is seeking solutions to the problem. Hopefully a solution can be found without replacing the reader, which is a $14,000 expense. The residents’ directory on The Landings website is now a complete and comprehensive version of the directory. Additionally, the existing Landings database will be complete and fully updated in a month or so.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE July 2019

LHA meeting notes Mike Knupp, LMA Lakes & Drainage Chair and LHA board member reviewed the status of two drainage projects affecting Association homeowners. Work on the Flicker Field Circle problem, near the Kestral Park Way S. intersection should be complete by the time you read this. Work continues on the Pine Harrier Circle project, with several homeowners experiencing problems. The Board approved the addition of fences on Kestral Park Way S. and Flicker Field Circle residences and issued a setback variance for a property on Kestral Park Lane covering the existing features of the property. The board denied permission to install an entrance to a Pine Harrier Drive property from Field Road. Unless some urgent business arises, the Board elected to cancel the July regular board meeting. The next regularly scheduled board meeting is August 8, 2019 at the Landings Racquet Club at 7:00 p.m.

Passages James (Jim) S. Klein of Sarasota, age 94, died peacefully on May 24, 2019. Jim served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. When commissioned he was one of the youngest officers in the Navy. During the war he served as the navigator and gunnery officer on the USS Coronis. Discharged in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Jim went on to complete a BS in business at Northwestern University. In 1949 he married Betty Benesch, and the couple lived and raised a family in suburban Chicago. Jim is survived by their three children: Michael (married to Susan Colwell), Daniel (married to Rosanne Skirble) and Kathryn; and four grandchildren: Gabriel, Refael, Ariel and Adrienne. Jim owned several bowling alleys in the Chicago area and served as President of the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America. Later, he founded an appliance distributorship, selling and installing natural gas lights and barbecue grills. He was elected to serve on the local School Board and volunteered on the Board of the YMCA. Jim loved water skiing and tennis, sharing his enthusiasm with his wife, children, nieces, nephews and friends. After selling his business and moving to Atlanta and eventually Sarasota to escape Chicago winters, Jim rejected retirement and continued working as a manufacturers’ rep into his early 80s. His wife Betty passed away in Sarasota in 2005. Not long after, Jim was introduced to Inge Stanton, also of

Sarasota. They became loving friends and companions for 12 years until his death. Jim and Inge travelled extensively, regularly attended concerts, opera and theater, and enjoyed time with their children and grandchildren, as well their many friends. Jim’s wit, intelligence, sense of duty, and love for country and family will be remembered by all who knew him. He will be interred at the VA Cemetery of Sarasota. Earthmoving permit application for Siesta Promenade site under Rachel Brown Hackney review by county staff By This article is the latest update reprinted from the June 2019 Siesta Sand. SarasotaNewsLeader.com An earthmoving permit application involving the site of the proposed Siesta Promenade project remained under county staff review as this issue of Siesta Sand went to press. Formally filed on May 1, the application from Siesta 41 Associates LLP, an affiliate of Benderson Development Co., had notations of insufficiencies as of mid-May in regard to the required Tree Protection Review, the History Center Review and the Air & Water Quality Review, the county’s Permitting Division records showed. Further, the Stormwater Division and Environmental Specialist reviews remained open as of the afternoon of May 15. The Permitting records noted that the purpose of the work would be to clear the property on the northwest corner of U.S. 41 and Stickney Point Road, where the mixed-development project would stand. On Dec. 12, 2018, the County Commission approved the Siesta Promenade proposal on split votes. Both Commissioners Nancy Detert and Charles Hines opposed the requested rezoning, which will allow Benderson to construct 414 condominiums/apartments, a 130-room hotel and 140,000 square feet of retail and office space. The application said impervious structures and septic tanks would be removed from the approximately 24 acres, where a mobile home park stood for decades. One county staff stipulation noted that Siesta 41 Associates also would have to obtain a permit from the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County “prior to any septic abandonment” and that the work must be “conducted by or under the direct supervision of a Florida Licensed Septic Contractor or Licensed Master Plumber.” That stipulation was added by Matthew Miller of the Health Department staff, the notation says. In regard to the Tree Protection Review, county staff member Darren Semones wrote on May 8, “Removal of pads and roads can occur without the need for tree removal.” That information underscored comments Semones made in an April 24 letter to Siesta 41 Associates’ representative, Clint Cuffle of Water Resource Associates (WRA) in University Park, as a followup to discussion that was part of the county’s April 18 Development Review Committee (DRC) meeting.

6

Cuffle appeared at that DRC session to discuss how Siesta 41 Associates could best proceed with the site clearing. In fashion similar to Semones’ notation in the Permitting records, County Archaeologist Steven Koski reprised statements in the April 24 letter in his comments. He pointed out that the demolition plan must include information about the preservation of the Pine Shores Clubhouse chimney, “so the demolition contractor is aware there is an avoidance area around the chimney until it is relocated.” John McCarthy, former director of what was then the county’s Parks and Recreation Department, explained that the clubhouse was constructed of logs, making it an unusual building in the county. A fire destroyed the clubhouse, he said, but the chimney was saved. Koski added in his notation, “The relocation plan for the chimney and methodology must be submitted to Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources (PRNR) and Historical Resources (HR) for review and approved prior to proceeding with the move; coordinated with the point persons with PRNR and HR.” Koski also pointed out that costs incurred under the mitigation plan would be the responsibility of Benderson Development or Siesta 41 Associates.

Ongoing litigation

Litigation begun in early January in an effort to halt the construction of Siesta Promenade was a topic of discussion during the May 2 meeting of the Siesta Key Association (SKA). President Catherine Luckner welcomed as a special guest Ralf Brookes of Cape Coral, who is handling the Petition for Writ of Certiorari filed on Jan. 11 on behalf of Sura Kochman, a resident of Pine Shores Estates, which would be the closest neighbor of Siesta Promenade. Typically, Brookes explained, construction of a project will not begin until after litigation has been completed. After reviewing some of the facets of the legal case, Brookes told the approximately 60 audience members

THE LANDINGS EAGLE July 2019

that he would imagine oral arguments would be set for either late summer or early fall — the August/September/ October timeframe. It could be the winter, Brookes added, before the hearing is conducted, as “the courts are very, very busy.” Still, he pointed out, the Siesta Promenade case has such a high profile, he anticipates the judge will opt for an earlier schedule rather than a later one. It appears the case may be heading on a longer track, after all. On May 16, exactly two weeks after Brookes made his comments to the SKA audience, the attorney for Benderson and Siesta 41 Associates filed a motion with the court, saying that the two companies, the county and Brookes had agreed on an extension to June 24 for Siesta 41 Associates, Benderson and the county to file their responses to Kochman’s petition. The responses had been due by May 17. Generally, when all parties are in agreement, the presiding judge will grant such a motion. During the SKA meeting, Brookes also addressed the earthmoving application, saying he attended the April 18 DRC meeting, when that process was proposed to Cuffle of WRA. An earthmoving application, Brookes pointed out, normally is submitted by

someone working on a farm or in some type of agriculture-related business. He does not believe such an application is appropriate for the clearing of the Siesta Promenade property, he added. Questions also have been raised about the person who serves as facilitator of the DRC meetings, Robert “Bob” Schmitt of Land Planning Associates of Lakewood Ranch. Brookes indicated that Schmitt was the one who proposed the earthmoving application idea. Land Planning Associates’ website says the firm “is proud to represent landowners and developers with assistance in obtaining approvals of anything relative to land use permitting. ... Most work is related to rezones and other conditional land use approvals in Manatee County, Florida.” The website notes that Schmitt worked in Manatee and Sarasota counties for more than 30 years, most recently as Manatee’s zoning official. In response to questions, Matt Osterhoudt, director of the county’s Planning and Development Services Department, said that Schmitt, who works for a temporary employment firm called Ad-Vance has been facilitator of the DRC meetings “for some time.” Osterhoudt stressed that Schmitt’s firm does not work in Sarasota County.

Racquet Club News |President’s Report

|Manager’s Report

By Dick Bayles

By Kevin Lechlitner

We’ve gotten positive feedback from players about the social tennis scheduling for the Monday, Wednesday and Friday players, and will be doing the same for the Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday players as of June 1st. Your Board has been discussing and reviewing options for providing a permanent pickleball facility at the Club. Providing one on our limited landscape is not a simple task. One of the possible solutions would be to replace one Har-Tru tennis court with four hard-surfaced pickleball courts, with fencing and soundproofing to isolate the noise from the adjacent tennis courts and nearby residences. In a unanimous vote, further consideration of that solution has been discontinued. The remaining solution is razing and rebuilding a revised maintenance shed, which could provide for construction of two pickleball courts. The Board is reviewing the costs and acceptability of this solution. Please note that the Club’s e-mail addresses have been changed, although the old addresses will forward to the new ones for some time. This was required due to Verizon’s (AOL’s) gradually eliminating access to the @verizon.net email addresses through the Club’s email system. THE LANDINGS EAGLE July 2019

We held our annual Memorial Day BBQ on Monday, May 27th. It was a wonderful event. We had 133 people come out to celebrate the day including 30 military veterans. COL Bobbie Fernander, U.S. Army Retired gave a brief speech about Memorial Day then showed a YouTube video entitled “Just a Common Soldier”. After the video, everyone sang along to the military service song medley. Thank you to our chefs Edvin and Gary for cooking all the burgers and hot dogs. I’d also like to thank all the volunteers that helped with the food preparation and clean up. We couldn’t pull off an event of that size without their help. The Club also hosted our 5th Annual Family Swim Night on June 7th. It was organized by LMA Board member, Doug Day and his wife Roni and was open to all the families with kids in the community. Veronica and her daughter Katty did a great job decorating the Club for the event. There was plenty of food including chicken from PDQ and fruit & vegetable trays.

We had roughly 30 people attend the event. As it is every year, the ice cream truck was the hit of the party. The kids and adults really seemed to enjoy it. Are you looking for more tennis? We are receiving a lot of calls in the Pro Shop lately to find “subs” for the 8:00 or 9:30 a.m. social games. Since the summer is here, there are less tennis players on the courts. The seasonal members have already left and some of the year-round members are taking their summer vacations. If you are interested in playing more tennis, please contact the Pro Shop and let us know when you are available.

Racquet Club News |Tennis Tips By Adrian “Mo” Moghina One of the most important things to practice when you are working on your game is timing. Timing is a survival instinct. Remember what I say on the court all the time, “That as we age every human being has pretty good timing because we have to stay alive and succeed at different tasks.” When you ride your bicycle or drive your car, you need to pay attention so that you don’t crash into things. This is timing. When you talk or sing you have to start and stop sounds at the right moments so that people understand you. This is timing. All the sports involving a ball, require that you pay attention to timing. You have to catch or make contact with the ball at the right moments in order to be able to control the ball correctly. In tennis we want to make contact with the ball on all of our shots in front of the body. However, there is a fine line as to how far in front of the body that should be. We all

have a unique strike zone. The length of your arms and hands may be longer or shorter than the next person and these differences add or subtract from that perfect moment to make contact with the ball. This perfect moment for you is in front of your body, but where you can keep strong posture. You don’t want to be leaning forward or falling off balance. Intentional repetitive practice of this is key. One of the best ways to do this is to use targets on the court. The targets give you important feedback as to whether you hit the ball at the right moment and are still able to keep strong posture. You will notice that if you loosen your posture you will lose power and control. So practice, practice your timing every time you go on the court! In your mind’s eye, always have a target so you don’t crash and burn. I will be out of town July 6 – 14, but the cardio classes will still be “on” as scheduled with a substitute pro. See you on the courts!

THE LANDINGS EAGLE July 2019

LMA meeting notes Moving forward, the committee will provide the association with helpful environmental tips regarding the adverse effects of fertilizers, pesticides, and lawn clippings entering the waterways from lake one runoffs. • The LMA was awarded funds from the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program Partnership Grant program to continue our ongoing Storm water Retention Pond Habitat Restoration Project. These funds will help move our project forward, enhance another one of our lakes, and provide a unique community involvement event to gather us together in this important environmental initiative. Thanks to LMA Past-President Deirdre D’Silva, Mike Knupp (Project Leader and Drainage and Lakes Committee Chairperson), Maralyn Kaufman-David (Project Leader and Environmental Committee Chairperson), Larry Lawrence (External Relations Committee Chairperson), Carriage House 1 Association leaders, Jeff Durante (President) and Laurie Malone (Landscape), and Carriage House 1 residents. • Regional coordinator, Ann Paul, of Audubon Florida, will present a discussion of birds in The Landings at a future Landings Free College lecture series. • Robert Manteiga will be contributing monthly photographs and information for The Eagle about a bird that is indigenous to The Landings. • Communicated with Lakes chair, Michael Knupp the need for improved rings of responsibility care

Continued from page 13

around lakes 4 and 5. • Received thank you notes for a $100 donation to the Sarasota Audubon Society for two events led by Landings volunteers, Lynn Jakubowicz, Mary Heinlen and Sandra Vendeventor. • Reviewed the status of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) project on the island on Flicker Field Circle in early May with Deirdre D’Silva. Most of the plants/shrubs look as healthy as the other islands on Flicker Field Circle, with the exception of the center shrubs, which look leafy on top and leggy on bottom. Although this is a change on the IPM island, we noted a similar phenomenon on the same type of shrub on the island on Peregrine Point Drive between Peregrine Point Court and Peregrine Point Circle West (that has been maintained as usual by the LMA landscape company). The change looks like it could be due to lack of water, need for pruning, or need for fertilizer. I will be exploring an organic fertilizer suggested by a neighbor in the IPM island area (Milorganite), and Deirdre D’Silva will be applying an organic fertilizer starting in June. The IPM island will continue to be monitored in the hopes of finding an environmentally sound balance of less pesticide/fertilizer and thriving vegetation that could potentially be used in other locations.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS: SIESTA PROMENADE A judge granted Benderson and Sarasota County an extension of the show cause order until June 24. The group opposing the project led by Sura Kochman, will have 15 days to respond. NEW BUSINESS A lengthy general discussion of accounting and financial practices occurred. The focus was on which category to show the yearly interest earned on the boards accumulated surplus. The discussion was tabled and LMA President, Norm Olshansky said he would discuss the issue with the auditor during the annual audit. GENERAL DISCUSSION Before the end of the meeting, a resident from Landings South I asked the board to address a continuing problem with the fountain and algae in their lake. Lakes chair, Michael Knupp provided an extensive explanation of all that had been done to resolve the issues and assured her everything possible would be done to solve the problem moving forward.

Andrejs Jurjans: My Life in Pictures Andrejs Jurjans was born in Riga, Latvia and lived on the family farm in Liepupe, a small town about 70 miles from Riga. It is said people from this region are creative, laid-back, enjoy the city’s night life and its singing events. Yes, Andrejs does the same thing here! He enjoys being a Landings resident along with Bonnie and their son, Jeffrey. They love Sarasota, especially living in their home here in The Landings where he is a member of the Landings Landolers. He is proud to say their son, Jeffrey, is an award winning tennis player, attends Riverview High and takes lessons from our Landings top pros; and Bonnie is a popular Landings Tri-cities Tennis League team member, too. Since Ralph and I were recently in Riga Latvia, we asked Andrejs about his memories of life in Latvia. He said he was just 4 years old when he, and his sister Astrida, age 7, left their homeland with their Mom, Dad, Milda, and Albert riding out of town in a Creamery truck, heading south to Poland, eventually to Germany during World War II. They were placed in a displaced persons camp in Greven, Germany, where Andrejs attended a Latvian school, grades 1 thru 5. They lived there five years until he came to the United States in 1949, under the sponsorship of the Lutheran Church. The family settled in Park River, North Dakota where their sponsor, a fellow creamery businessman provided a job and housing for them. Asked if he remembers leaving Latvia at his young age, Andrejs recalls, “I remember the black wooden fisherman’s roofs everywhere, just like our house, and the Baltic Sea which was only 3 km. from our house. I also remember my grandfather giving me a 5 Lats (Latvian coin). I kept it many years later which I gave to my son, Janis at his wedding.

By Dee Ricapito

His most unforgettable memory? It was his first sight of the United States. “Boston at night from the deck of our troop transport, the USS General Muirr, which brought us to America from Germany. It was so impressive as a boy.” Favorite food? Latvian rye bread, pork, potatoes, sausage, beer and wine. Also another of Andrejs’ favorite dish is a cucumber salad made with: 2 cucumbers, 1/2 onion (very thinly sliced), a small handful of fresh dill, salt, and mix all together with sour cream enough to generously coat the cucumbers. Andrejs, Jeffrey and Bonnie in their current Did you ever revisit your homeland? “We recently went Landings home back to visit Riga in 2004. We found it a beautiful, clean city. We also returned to our old family home which brought back many memories since it hasn’t changed much. Then visited our cousin, Gundars, and his daughters in Latvia. We enjoyed the music and singing that is everywhere in schools and choirs. Adults sing in celebrations with beer/ vodka and there was always singing in my dad’s house and I always liked to sing as a child,” said Andrejs. “In 2018 the whole Country was celebrating its 101 year old anniversary. Celebrating with a music festival, “recalls Andrejs. “We also found cycling was still a popular way to go from place to place. Now most of the bicycles are motorized as well as scooters.” How did you get to The Landings? “I worked 38 years for the Department of Defense, Navy, in San Francisco, California and Washington D.C. in the Pentagon bldg. where I met Bonnie Cummings. We had friends who had a condo on Beneva and the Bee Ridge area. We came for a Andrejs at age 4; Astrida, sister age 7; Mom & Dad, visit and fell in love with Sarasota. Mida, Albert outside of their home.

“BIRDS IN OUR BACKYARD” BUILDING A BIRD LIST FOR THE LANDINGS

By Maralyn Kaufman-David and Robert Manteiga, Co-editors

BIRDS IN OUR BACKYARD: Egrets Photos by Robert Manteiga There are three species of egret that are common to Sarasota and the west

coast of Florida. The American Egret or Great Egret is a large, slender and stately bird with a yellow beak, black legs and a large wingspan. It is often confused with the Great White Heron, the only noticeable difference being the yellow color of the Heron’s legs. The Heron has yellow legs. The Snowy Egret is somewhat smaller than the Great Egret, and has slender black legs and yellow feet. Its beak is also slightly darker in color. The Snowy often

puffs out its feathers to reveal a beautiful plumage. The Cattle Egret is the smallest of the three species. It has a yellow beak and greenish colored legs. During breeding season the Cattle Egret reveals colorful yellow plumage on its crest and on the tips of its wings. It is called the Cattle Egret because it is often seen perched on top of a cow and eating the bugs off the animal’s back. All of these Egrets can be found along the shores of ponds and lakes, as well as in salt marshes and tidal flats.

Monarchs and Milkweed

Happiness is… Striving for Excellence

The Only Plant Material Monarch Caterpillars Can Eat!! By Maralyn Kaufman David LMA Environmental Committee Chairperson Remember milkweed? What fun it is to see all those silky strands with seeds fly in the wind when the milkweed pod explodes. Who knew that milkweed is the ONLY plant material that Monarch caterpillars can eat! Milkweed is a great plant for gardeners to consider for their gardens to help the declining Monarch butterfly population, which has decreased by an estimated 80 to 90% over the past few decades. Milkweed is the common name (that describes their milky sap) for a group of plants that belong to the Asclepias genus. This genus of plants is named after Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing in ancient Greek mythology, because of the cardiac glycosides found in their tissue. In addition to their long history of being used for medicinal purposes, milkweed serves as a host plant for Monarch caterpillars and is also an important nectar source for bees and other insects. As the monarch larva consumes the milkweed leaves, it also retains the cardiac glycosides making the monarch toxic to predators. The monarch butterfly intentionally eats milkweed to become distasteful to protect itself from predators, hence the bright warning colors they feature. Milkweed flowers produce nectar that is beneficial for all butterfly species and honeybees, another insect with a declining population. Indeed, more than 450 insects are known to feed on some portion of the plant. Numerous insects are attracted to the nectar-laden flowers and it is not at all uncommon to see flies, beetles, ants, bees, wasps, and butterflies on the flowers at the same time. Occasionally hummingbirds will try, unsuccessfully, to extract nectar. Its sap, leaves, and flowers also provide food. In addition, the floss from milkweed seedpods is used by humming birds to line their nests There are over 100 species of milkweed in North America and the diversity of foliage and flower color is quite amazing. All milkweeds are herbaceous perennials, meaning they live for more than two years. Common milkweed, the species most familiar in Central America and eastern North America, is the host plant for 90% of the monarch butterflies that eventually overwinter in Mexico. Milkweeds that are native to Florida include Fewflower milkweed (Asclepias lanceolata), Pinewoods milkweed (Asclepias humistrata); Florida milkweed (Asclepias longifolia), and Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa). Milkweed is becoming increasingly available at plant nurseries, but unfortunately some plants are raised in greenhouse environments that use pesticides, which then ironically harm caterpillars once planted in your yard. Please check to make sure any milkweed you buy has been raised without pesticide applications. For more information, access the following websites: http://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/plants/ ornamentals/milkweed.html https://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/plant-of-the-week/ asclepias_syriaca.shtml http://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/alachuaco/2018/02/09/ if-you-plant-it-they-will-come/

Do You Make Mistakes? ...See If I Care By Dee Ricapito Did you ever think it could be a good thing when you make mistakes? They can turn out to be valuable experiences — even more so than our victories.....(Except for Super Bowl Sunday picks)! I’ve had my share of screw-ups and “Oh, No’s.” And, don’t love them happening — but luckily they were not disasters. Life is an everyday process of learning. It seems there’s no limit to my learning... “Oh Nooo, not again‼” Mistakes happen - yet, it’s not always a negative thing; if we learn something and fail smarter next time. So if you suffer from a screw-up occasionally, don’t beat yourself up too much because they could be incredibly good “investments in life.” Even Sigmund Freud said, “From error to error a wise person discovers truth.”

Wake & Shake Just roll out of bed...your hair looks great!

Shampoo and towel dry.... and you’re done! The style is in the cut, not the blow-dry, so you don’t have to fuss with your hair to look good... even fine, limp or curly hair... and my new steam color process + Olaplex creates richer brunettes and spectacular blondes. The colors go deeper and last longer, yet are far more gentle to the hair. By Appointment Only with Ian:
