Dr. Irving Kushner

By Diana Colson

Clinician, Teacher, Researcher Irving Kushner and his wife moved to The Landings four years ago. Originally from NYC, Dr. Kushner did his undergraduate studies at Columbia University before going to medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, where he was introduced to clinical medicine and biomedical science. Half way through his internship at New Haven (Yale) Community Hospital, he married Enid, who was a first year student in Social Work. Dr. Kushner looks upon his long medical career as being a 3-legged stool: patient care, teaching, and research. He spent two years doing research at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md. After that, he spent one year as a medical resident at the Boston City Hospital. In 1958, he was given the opportunity to move to Cleveland where he could combine clinical work with research. With Enid’s encouragement, he jumped at the chance! He became a research fellow in immunology at what was then Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital, a major teaching hospital of Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine. Shortly afterwards he became a specialist in Rheumatology. Except for two years along the way, the couple stayed in Cleveland for the

rest of Dr. Kushner’s medical career, raising two sons and a daughter. In 196263 he took his family to Paris where he worked in a research lab. At the time, his children were ages 2, 3, and 6. The family rented a home to the south of Paris where the children went to local schools and temporarily conquered French. (That unforgettable year enhanced Dr. Kushner’s professional career. Later, for 5 years in the 1980s he was to serve as President of Groupe d’Etude et de Recherche sur les Marquers de l’Inflammation in Lyons, France.) Continued on page 12

LMA Decal Verification

Letters have gone out to owners of properties in Carriage house I notifying them that the decals registered to them will be suspended on April 1st unless they take action before that date to re-validate them. Owners can avoid suspension by re-validating their decals before April 1, 2015. Owners who will be gone for the month their decals are scheduled to be deactivated may go to the Main Gate before they leave to complete the verification process. The form will be available on The Landings website and from the Main Gate.

by at various times during the event to enjoy the refreshments and the beautiful day. Special thanks to Rudi Blohm and Jack Jost for their leadership in organizing the event. See additional photos on page 28.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE March 2015

President’s Column I would like to begin this column by offering my congratulations to the newly elected members to the LMA Board of Directors (Doug Day, Neil Goldman, Mike Knupp, Joan Lowery) and to those re-elected to the Board (Larry Lawrence, Marie GraziosiJacaruso, Don McMurray) and to those with at least one year remaining on their term (John Carson and Bob Manteiga). More extensive coverage of each 2015 LMA Board member will be covered in future issues. Each candidate was highlighted in last month’s issue. The Board, and community, will miss the extensive work and dedication of Henry Rhodes, Jack Jost, Rudi Blohm, and Truman Menefee who completed their term of office or decided to leave the board at the end of their term. Due to the changes in board composition we will be in a restructuring phase – not only with new leadership, but with a re-focus on direction and goals for the

association. The new executive committee consists of: Neil Goldman, Vice President; Marie Graziosi-Jacaruso – Treasurer; Larry Lawrence – Secretary; and myself as President. However, your assistance is requested. We have a number of active committees that need leadership and members (please see The Eagle for a review of committees and activities – usually page 3). I’ll be reviewing and appointing new committee chairs in the days/weeks ahead and I would like to hear from anyone who has an interested in serving or leading a committee. Most of the committee activities require only an hour to a few hours a month of your time, but what you can give is always helpful to the Board and our community. To highlight a few events I want to draw your attention to: • February 5, we were pleased to hear our newly elected County Commissioner Alan Maio address “The State of the County” followed by an

informal reception. • February 7, we “christened” the Gazebo. A ribbon cutting ceremony was well attended, with many thanks to Rudi Blohm and Jack Jost for their leadership throughout the project and to Florida Shorelines for their competent and efficient work in constructing the beautiful structure. • February 11th, we held a Town Hall Meeting to get feedback from our community on improving safety on our roads. The turnout was wonderful and we appreciate everyone who came out and participated. There was a very lively discussion, with many thoughtful ideas on how to address the concerns of sharing our roads with walkers, bicyclists, dog walkers, and vehicles. The Board will be taking up this very important issue of improving safety on our roads by considering the recommendations of the Safety and Security Committee on how to curb speeding and integrating

LMA. Food, drink, music, and good company are provided. • March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day. No LMA event, but it’s a good holiday to celebrate in the spirit of the Irish! I and the Board encourage you to get involved in any manner that you can. Certainly volunteering for a committee would be great, but also offering you thoughts, comments, and ideas on important topics is also appreciated. the many thought and ideas shared by our members on how to improve safety. • March 14th, we will be holding a “New Residents’ Reception” at The Landings Racquet Club – Lakeside from 5:00 to 7:00. Historically, this had been a great event to welcome our new residents, provide them with an opportunity to mingle with some of our “seasoned” residents and board members, and to provide a brief overview of the operations of

Henry Rhodes - Thank You For those Landins who have not been to an LMA meeting in the past few years, understandably, you will not know what you owe to Henry Rhodes and his leadership of The Landings Management Association. Henry announced his retirement from the LMA b oard at the Feb ruary 5, meeting. He surprised the room full of attendees with his announcement, who then recognized his contributions to the community with a standing ovation. Henry brought the governance of The Landings to a new, high standard. He had a crowd of more than 80 residents in 2008 when he had a Brainstorming meeting to determine what residents wanted and needed to enhance life in our great community. We introduced the concept of Strategic Planning to The Landings. I was honored to be the first chairman of that committee. From that meeting,

Henry established most of the standing committees that now form the base of the LMA board: Drainage, Aesthetics, Environment, Marketing/ Public Relations, Government Relations, and now Archives and the Editorial committees. Henry created the first training sessions for new board members. He had the committee chairs provide written reports of their monthly activities. Then, he put together a final year recap of the significant accomplishments of the committees, and their progress against their goals.

By Karl Maggard

Through all this, and the countless hours he gave every week and weekends, Henry maintained a positive outlook. Despite his hardwork and diligence, he had a couple of detractors. These are the people who generally complain if the sun is too bright!! Despite the few negative comments he would receive, he would always smile, and never take any comments to heart. He just kept on giving and inspired others to give. While he gave all of this time to The Landings, he also gave time to his church and, personally, to his neighbors. He organized (and kept a spreadsheet) a group of neighbors to drive one ill friend and neighbor to his weekly doctor’s visits, among many other unselfish endeavors. If you ever have the good fortune to meet Henry, let alone are blessed to call him a friend, just say, “Thanks.” That’s about all Henry ever wanted from all that he has given to us.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE March 2015

In 1963 Dr. Kushner returned to Cleveland, took over the Arthritis Clinic and established a consultation, research and teaching rheumatology service at the hospital. As a rheumatologist, he dealt with arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and a variety of autoimmune diseases such as Lupus Erythematosus. He taught medical students, residents, and trainees (Fellows); he gave formal lectures, of course—but most of the time he and his students were dealing with actual patients at the bedside. From 1965 to 2005, Dr. Kushner’s laboratory research was funded by the National Institutes of Health. Over his entire career, he has published over 170 papers, edited 3 books, and authored or coauthored 30 book chapters. His impressive CV is 24 pages long! Meanwhile Enid had a career of her own as a Social Worker in Cleveland. At the age of 53, her children grown, she entered

law school, and went on to practice bankruptcy law for 14 years. Of their three children, Dr. Kushner has this to say: “We raised a doctor, a lawyer, and an Indian Chief. The Indian Chief is our daughter who is in the arts.” Ellen Kushner writes novels and short stories, and has received awards for her fantasy books. She had a Boston radio show called “Sound & Spirit” which was distributed nationally by Public Radio International (PRI). Son Philip is a lawyer in Cleveland, and the father of two boys. Son David is a Radiologist in Iowa City; a Captain in the Navy Reserve, he is currently deployed in Norfolk. Va. Dr. Kushner formally retired in 2010 at the age of 81. He is now Professor Emeritus of Medicine at CWRU. Last September he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ohio Association of Rheumatologists. The award was given for “his

demonstration of outstanding dedication, leadership, and achievements in the field of Rheumatology”. At the award ceremony he gave much of the credit to his wife: “I’ve been lucky in a lot of ways. Enid was very supportive; she built the foundation that made it possible for me to pursue the career that I had.” Now retired as a physician, he believes in the value of the daily workout. You can find him doing 3 laps around Starling Drive every morning with 3-pound weights in hand. Dr. Kushner also believes in keeping the mind engaged. Currently, he spends a lot of time preparing talks and manuscripts on various subjects to present to The Rowfant Club, a bibliophilic organization in Cleveland. “I teach myself so that I can give the talks. Round Table / Current Events The Thursday afternoon Round Table/Current events series continued to roll along at the end of January and through February despite Ralph and Dee Ricapito’s absence (they were in Bahrain and Southeast Asia). All sessions were well attended and enthusiastically received. On January 29th Landings resident Bob Manteiga taught us about postwar Italian neorealist movies. His talk was accompanied by a showing of one of the great ones, Umberto D. On

February 5th newly elected Sarasota commissioner Alan Maio let us know how the county functions and how it is doing financially - very well, it seems. The following week Tree house resident David Rovine, who runs the Baltimore Orioles’ Sarasota operation, told us about the significant role that the Orioles’ operation plays in the Sarasota community. Unfortunately, the talk scheduled for February 19 by Don Leidel had to be cancelled because he was out of town.

Last year’s session was heavily attended and an enormous success. His guest will be the noted jazz pianist Michael Royal, who will treat us to an informative, entertaining performance of original arrangements of songs from the American Songbook, by composers such as Irving Berlin and the Gershwins. • On March 5th, Linda Lee, who is authoritative about the sport of bridge, the sport of tennis, and the sport of marathon running, as well as the nonsport of computers, will discuss The Psychology of Sports • On March 12th, Al Goldis will discuss My Life

Over the course of his career he served as Director of Player Development, Scouting Director, and Special Assistant to the GM of at least 6 major league baseball teams. He was responsible in some way for the evaluating, drafting, and signing of more than 100 major league players. He is in the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame. • On March 19th, Irv Kushner will tell the fascinating story of How Stalin’s daughter defected to the USA in 1967 and what happened then. • Finally, the season will end on March 23rd, when Ralph Ricapito will presides over “Just for Laughs”, part 2, a sequel to last year’s successful session.

|News From the Court

Here’s hoping the cold temperatures are behind us and we can begin to enjoy some beautiful tennis weather. Join us Friday, March 13, 2015 for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Round Robin. Play begins at 3:00 p.m. followed by dinner with traditional Irish fare of corned beef, cabbage and potatoes. Stop by the Pro Shop for the sign-up sheet and further details. And remember, you do not have to be a tennis player to join in the fun. Hope to see you there! If it’s April it must be time for Landings Day.

It’s a chance to get together with your friends before some of you head north. On Friday, April 10, 2015 join in the fun and festivities starting with tennis activities featuring the ever popular dunk tank. Judging by the number of times I went in the water last year it is obvious that many of you are practicing beforehand. So get your aim game ready. Spring breaks are fast approaching. Book your lessons early with John, Ron or me for your out-of-town guests. I can be reached at lrctennisdirector@verizon.net or 941 - 993 - 2628. See you on the courts.......

IN SEARCH OF LANDINGS EAGLE PHOTOGRAPHERS

This winter the number of events, for which coverage by photographers is desired, has increased significantly. As a result, additional volunteer photographers are needed. The time requirement for most events is just 15-20 minutes (unless you want to stay longer). Qualifications: basic ability/knowledge of photography and the possession of a “decent” camera (something more sophisticated than a “Brownie”). If interested please call Paul Weiner, event photographer coordinator); 941-924-8544, plw6543@verizon.net.

|President’s Report By Dick Bayles We have begun our busy season. The Landings Learning Group and Current Events Roundtable are enjoying record attendance and the courts are busier than ever at this time of year. We will hold our usual St. Patrick’s Day Round Robin and dinner on the afternoon of March 13th. Landings Day, our peak season closing event, will take place on April 10th this year. The Pro Shop remodeling project will begin the week before Landings Day, with the move of its operations over the last two days of that week to the MultiPurpose room in the Fitness Center. We have scheduled the work to last six weeks, putting us back in the new Pro Shop by June 1st. Except for the physical relocation, all Pro Shop activities will function as usual. The ping pong table will be relocated temporarily to its previous location in the Lakeside Room.

|Manager’s Report

By Kevin Lechlitner

It’s hard to believe that it is March already. As I mentioned last month, the courts are very busy. That hasn’t slowed down a bit and I don’t expect it to until sometime in April. Both clubhouses are active with the exercise classes, association meetings and various social activities. I’d like to thank some of the members responsible for organizing the social activities. The Landings Learning Group series is on Wednesdays and is led by Howard & Adrienne Feltman and their committee. The attendance has been great for the start of the season and it shows no signs of slowing down. The movie nights on Fridays, led by Sid Wenokor and Colin Wendell, have had a nice crowd each time as well. Ray and Linda Lee are in their fourth year of Bridge classes. Finally, on Thursdays, we have the Round Table / Current Events led by Ralph Ricapito & Irv Kushner. They have had a nice schedule

so far and have some interesting topics coming up. Please check The Eagle calendar or call the Tennis Pro Shop at 923-3886 for more information on any of the activities at the LRC. While you have your calendar handy, be sure to mark down these dates. We have several social events coming up soon that you won’t want to miss. Joe is planning a St. Patrick’s Day round robin on Friday, March 13th at 3:00 PM. Even if you don’t play tennis, you can sign up for just the food. It has received excellent reviews year after year. The annual CANUKUS Challenge, organized by Barrie Taylor, is scheduled for March 22nd. This is where nationally ranked players from Canada and the UK challenge nationally ranked players from the US in three men’s doubles matches. March 24th is the next pancake breakfast. Our annual, season-ending Landings Day festival is April 10th. I know what you are thinking and the answer is YES! The dunk tank will be here. Hopefully we

can talk Joe into sharing time with John this year. As a reminder, the Club recently adopted some new in-house guest policies. Members are asked to register their in-house guests with the Club in advance of their visit. We will not charge a guest fee for registered inhouse guests. The sheets are available in the Pro Shop or on the website. Members also need to accompany their guests when they are using the Club. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in these matters.

The Landings Photo Gallery By Robert C. Manteiga Lately we’ve seen many lovely photographs of trees, birds, and other wildlife that populate The Landings, but there are a number of smaller, less significant creatures that often escape our attention as well as our photographic eye. Landing’s photographers Danko and Heidi Broder, Jeff Crotty, Rudy Blohm, and Bob Manteiga collectively want to

show you how spectacularly beautiful some of these seemingly insignificant little creatures can be. This month’s Photo Gallery features INSECTS AND BUGS. We hope you enjoy them…and, remember, you too can display your best photos in The Eagle’s Photo Gallery. Please send your photos to roberto@uri.edu

In September 2010, a group of concerned citizens founded the Village Walk’s HOPE in a BACK PACK program to alleviate hunger among school children in Sarasota County. 100% of all funds raised are used to purchase food to meet the needs of these hungry children at Fruitville Elementary School. Volunteers have packed 148 bags of healthy food during the school year for weekly distribution to needy (K-5th) children in their special backpacks. This provides nutrition for children during weekends and holidays when they might otherwise be without a meal. The annual fundraiser was held at the Village Walk clubhouse

in mid-February and was attended by 229 Village Walk residents. The evening included food and beverages, performances by students, live music and a silent auction. Abel’s Ice Cream was on hand to serve ice cream to all attendees. “Many Village Walk residents are our customers and it is personally rewarding to give back for such a great cause organized by this community,” Bill Abel, owner of Abel’s Ice Cream said. Association Matters, Legally Speaking

By Vanda Y. Bayliss, Esq

|Member Input Condominium and homeowners associations are run by a board of directors. The board is elected by the members to oversee all aspects of the operation of the condominium or subdivision. The members individually cannot act on behalf of the association. Only the board, or those to whom it delegates its power, can do so. Sometimes members complain that, once elected, the board does not listen to them. Is it required to do so? Yes and no. Any time a quorum of the board is present and discusses association business, it is considered a “board meeting.” According to Florida law, notice of all condominium board meetings must be posted at the designated spot at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. Longer notice, 14 days, is required for board meetings to discuss or vote on non-emergency special

assessments and to discuss or vote on amendments to rules regarding unit use. Homeowners associations must follow similar rules unless the governing bylaws contain different requirements for noticing meetings. Notice is required because members are generally entitled to attend all board meetings. (Only meetings with the association attorney to discuss pending or proposed litigation or to discuss personnel matters may be closed.) Members are also entitled to speak regarding each item on the agenda. The board may, however, enact reasonable rules as to the frequency, duration, and manner in which members may address the board. Delaying all member comments to the end of the meeting, when voting has likely already taken place, would not comply with the spirit of the law requiring

that members must be heard. A commonly enacted rule is, “Members may speak before the board votes on any issue, but may only speak once on each subject, and for no longer than three minutes.” While ensuring meetings do not run unreasonably long, the down side of a blanket “3 minute rule” is that a knowledgeable member may have very valuable insight and expertise that the board is interested in hearing. A more liberal rule limiting all speakers to 3 minutes per issue “unless the board agrees, in its sole discretion, that additional input would be valuable” would provide some leeway. Of course, any time one person is allowed more time than another, the one cut off may feel discriminated against. Regardless, a board would naturally be more inclined to allow significant member input without an

eye on the clock if the input is well thought out, on point, and contains facts and figures rather than mere opinions. Occasionally, a member wants the board to address an issue that is not on the agenda. The board is not required to address a matter just because a member so requests and may not, in fact, address an item not on the posted agenda unless it is an emergency. However, if 20 percent of the voting interests petition the board in writing to address a certain matter, the board must add the item to the agenda of the next board meeting. In any event, the matter must be addressed within 60 days even if a special meeting will be required. While the board must address the matter at a properly noticed board meeting, and allow for member comment, please note that does not mean that the board must take any action.

The ultimate decision is up to the board. The decision of whether to reelect or recall the board, however, is up to the members. (See Florida Statute §718.112(2)(c) for condominiums and §720.303(2) for homeowners associations.) Email vandabayliss@gmail.com with any questions.

Mineral - and Fossil-Rich Florida By Albert L. Weeks (Former Newsweek Science Desk staffer)

As most people know, Florida is rich in minerals. Maybe not as rich as the Gem State of Idaho. Yet it is this country’s main producer of phosphate, used in the making of chemical fertilizers and many other products, including animal feed and ceramics. Too, a form of uranium is extractable, though at cost, from phosphate. The State also harbors huge deposits of peat, onshore or offshore gas and oil, as well as gravel, quartz, sandstone, limestone, and other minerals used in building, making cement, etc. Florida also boasts of such rare metals aszircon, a “new” mineral that is highly resistant to heat. It is thus used in such high-temperature products as jet engines. Zircon is manufactured into a tough metal compound called zirconium, which is used in armor plating and cutting tools. What about that indispensable Mineral of Man and Beast, water? It would seem that with Florida’s drenching rains and subsequent flooding, there would be plenty of this“colorless liquid that turns black when you wash your hands.” Yet,as we know, shortages of drinking water crop up from time to time here. Of interest to scientists are the ancient, subterranean shelves of rock that either block or soak up Florida’s perennial rains via “aquifers.” The latter today provide water for drinking and bathing as they did for man and beast in Prehistoric times. Some of these sources of water are being studied as problematic geological headaches. One problem stems from the narrowness as well as partial exhaustion of the “rock-sponges” within the subsurface layers at the various locations of our State. Such porous rock formations (strata) are the ones that soak up water in the form of aquifer-pools at various depths. These are 15, 30, or over 350 feet down. These aquifers may become depleted depending on the amount

24

of rainfall and the degree of drilling and tapping of the subterranean pools by farmers and urban dwellers. Meanwhile, another belowthe-ground enterprise thrives in our State during any drought. These are the bands of fossileers. They have afield day during any aridity. Yet even rainfall doesn’t stop them from exploring the depths for fossils of many types. Such a “find” is the fossil shown in the (attached) photo of a petrified Sand Dollar that is some 40million years old. It was foun d in the Peace River by a group of student canoers I assembled some years ago. At monthly meetings held out on Stickney Road near the Intercoastal, fossileers club members display their finds. You see Mammoth and Mastodon Elephant bones(huge vertebra, jawbones, femurs, ribs, a huge molar tooth), skulls and remains of the Giant Sloth and other primordial mammals, scores of primitive whale and shark teeth, mollusks, such as Sand Dollars, and Indian relics like arrowheads. “Where do you find all this?” you ask. Your question is met with silence. Choice hunting spots are kept secret. But--btw-upstream on the Peace River is a great source. The river is quite shallow with a lazy current. You can seethe bottom of the stream pretty well. In deeper waters, some of the specimens, worth hundreds of dollars each, are so bulky they are hard to lift. So, Scuba gear is largely used for going to challenging depths. You may keep searching a spot for over 5 hours. In the last few minutes, you may--or may not--find something. Such work can be dangerous. Running hands more or less blindly through turgid water, scraping into the river bottom definitely have its hazards. People throw empty bottles and sharp objects into the water. Some fossileers have scars to prove it.

Geologically, how did Florida become such a paradise for fossil hunters? It all goes back millions of years to the primordial Continent of Pangea, the wet nurse of Florida. We should note that no dinosaurs ever dwelled in our state. Here’s why. Over 200 million years ago, the world’s several continents were all clumped together at the South Pole in one huge mass called Pangea. The upper half of Earth was entirely water. At that time the Moon was closer to the Earth and looked twice its size today. The Earth spun faster than now so its days were less than 23 hours long. Those millions of years ago, the Florida Peninsula, or “Platform,” looked like a halfsubmerged appendix stuck in the side of west central Africa, of all places. Over the eons, Pangea separated from Africa and drifted far to the northwest. It crossed the Equator and split into the big plates, called Laurentia and Gondwana. According to some geologists, our discrete peninsula itself remained independent like a raft afloat near the South Pole. It even disappeared for a time into the sea. Only some millions of years later it rose again and drifted north together with the whole South American continent. Both rejoined the southwest corner of the North American bulk of Laurentia. Florida then took the form it has today of a new, bigger appendage jutting out into the South Atlantic Ocean. Curiously, it became like a docked ship that stayed put as a late-comer. This becomes obvious when you realize that Florida has no dinosaur remains while states bordering Florida just to the north do have dinosaur fossils. There was no Florida before the dinosaurs became extinct! Their extinction dates back 120 million years, or more than double Florida’s own geologic age. Continued on next page

YUM, GUM!

Continued from previous page

The southernmost extent of dinosaur habitation in the Southeast is only 100 miles to the north of us—namely, at Selma, AL, and Tupolo, LA. For most of its life, Florida was underwater. As a result, our geologically-young state still has the lowest-lying terrain in the nation. Hence, sink holes, underwater creeks, bogs, and so on. Much of the State,in fact, is below sea level. As the epochs passed, Florida’s surface land widened somewhat as the ocean receded. Then the peninsula again narrowed down with rising sea levels. At the furthest lateral extension of the partly submerged Florida Platform east and west, Florida was double its present width as seen on today’s maps. Exotic animals of many genii and species--absent dinosaurs--lived in Florida’s prehistoric swamps and jungles. Besides hundreds of species of reptiles—snakes, lizards. crocodiles, alligators— ancient mammals and other

vertebrates made their way south. When the various ice ages descended on the southern half of North America thousands of years ago, an “icehouse” environment may have done in some of the mammals. But others, it is believed, perished in the onslaught of heat in the region that their bulky bodies could not ventilate. Such mammalian fossil remains are very much in demand today. Rare creatures include the ancient Rhinoceros, Giant Lion, Mammoth and Mastodon Elephants, Giant Ground Sloth, Cave Bear, Saber-toothed Tiger, extinct wild horses, Eocene Whale, numerous species of sharks (Giant Great White, an extinct Mako, Snaggletooth, etc.), a wide variety of mollusks with exquisite shell-shapes, and many other animals of the Paleocene, Oligocene, Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene Epochs of the Quaternary and Tertiary Periods going back 60 million years. Incidentally, much of Florida’s present

Ancient shark teeth vegetation pre-dates the appearance of reptiles and mammals over 200 million years ago, or long before Florida’s birth as a peninsula in North America. One can imagine that these giant-mammals added considerable tonnage to the virtually floating, barge-like Florida Peninsula. This 58,666 sq.-mile mass, geologists say, would periodically dip in and out of the sea in cyclic rolling-and-pitching motions. Yes, Florida rarely has felt tremors from earthquakes. It still rocks—literally. No, our infamous obesity and love of vehicles are not factors! aweeks11@comcast.net

We never used to recommend or discuss chewing gum. In fact we discouraged it because it “pulled out” fillings and crowns, etc. But we’ve learned a few things. First...that gum never “pulls” out acceptable fillings or crowns, only those that really needed to be changed anyhow. And we learned that chewing gum helps to stimulate saliva and moisten the mouth and teeth. As our population grows older we find that many of us have to take medications that dry up the mouth which is leading to increased decay and gum disease. Also many of us are not as dexterous as we once were. And we have gums that are sweetened with Xylitol that inhibits cavity producing microorganisms and neutralizes acids these microorganisms produce. So for many of our patients, young and old, we now actively recommend using gum with Xylitol right after eating and at least twice a day. It’s easier to prevent oral disease than treat it. And it’s far less costly.

Part VI - Landings at 25 – Encore |The Portside Villas - In the First Person When my husband, Harold and I moved to Sarasota, we had no idea where we wanted to finally settle. We leased for a year at Pelican Cove, a delightful community of one and two story condos; but, not a place where we wanted to live permanently. (Editor’s Note: Pelican Cove was an early development by Landings developer Robert Morris)

We drove up Tamiami Trail from Pelican Cove until we discovered “The Landings.” At that time, 20 years ago (nearly 30 years ago at this re-publication), the entrance was a vacant field before we approached the gate. I actually did not want to enter. I thought it looked too elegant and I expressed this attitude to my husband. He replied, “Well, let’s go in and see what they have to offer-we don’t have to buy.” That was a mistake! We fell in love with what The Landings had to offer and at that time it was still very undeveloped community. The Portside Villas were in the final stage of development. There was nothing but big empty fields where Starling Drive, Heron Way, etc., are now located. The Condos on Heron Way, facing the Clubhouse were just being built. The real estate lady took us in to see them. There was one drawback as far as Harold was concerned. There were

26

no elevators to the second floor; only those steep stairs, and Harold said, “I will not climb stairs!” Now, I am so glad that we chose not to purchase the new condos being built on Heron Way. At the present time, I could not climb those stairs several times a day either. Harold passed away almost seven years ago (now 17). He was a decorated Veteran of World War II and he was right. With his heart condition the stairs would have been impossible for him. We inquired of the real estate lady, “Is there anything else available?” Luckily for us there was. The Portside Villas had one unit left which had been the model. I believe there were also four more. But, each had a buyer. To make a long story short, we returned the next day with a deposit and were eager to purchase. We lived happily ever after in the Portside Villas. However, now that I am alone I plan to move back to my “roots” in Michigan. The Landings has so many desirable features-to me the closeness of Sarasota Memorial Hospital was most important in view of the fact that my husband was hospitalized nine times before the end came. Also, that the empty, undeveloped land as we approached the “Gate” is now a shopping center containing Albertson’s (now Publix) two or three fine restaurants, a few Men’s and Women’s clothing stores and much more. Another area we both loved and visited several times over the years is the Nature Trail – that little section of undeveloped land which starts on Heron Way and ends at Sarasota bay. God Bless The Landings and all of the lucky people who live here.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE March 2015

by Alyce Chargot (1919-2011) As written for publication March 2006.

Among the “Seldom Available” When the real estate ad reads “Landings—Seldom Available” you can pretty much depend on the property being in one of the smaller Landings developments. True of the Portside Villas, 16 one story, units, in duplex configuration are located along Pintail Way, They are considered highly desirable because of the pleasant setting around a large pond, ample wildlife, relative isolation and much sought after two-car garages. Officially the Villas are part of The Landings South development,. Carrying the official name of Landings II. Landings I is along Landings Blvd. and the north side of Heron Way. The Portside Villas, like the Landings plat, the Treehouses and the Carriage Houses, were developed by Robert Morris and The Ramar Group. Morris’s mother lived in one of the Villas for many years. Like all Landings properties the Villas showed substantial appreciation, mostly in the years prior to the “real estate bust.” They sold in 1985-86 from $114,000 to $146,000. In 2002 several transferred ownership in the low to mid $200,000 range. 2003 & 04 saw sales in the low to high $200,000’s. One transferred in 2005 for a startling $445,000. (Remember county records do not reveal

extensive improvements or extenuating circumstances affecting sale prices.) In May of 2014 listing prices of two units were in the $229,000 to $264,000 range.

Blooming this month: Succulents: Full of juice, full of vitality, and

freshness. A plant having fleshy and juicy tissues. Thirty plus plant families have succulent members, storing water in leaves, stems, or roots which allows them to survive extended periods of drought. Succulent plants live in deserts, rain forests and all climates between. They are found on all continents except Antartica. The flush of bloom in spring of night blooming Cereus delights us. The fragrance lures pollinators from miles and neighbors from blocks to gather in celebration. The succulent’s unique shapes, colors, and inflorescence entice collectors and landscapers. Going away for an extended period? Succulents will be alive to greet you when you return home. Flowers range from the tiny clusters of blooms of many members of the Crassula and Euphorbia families to the showy blooms of the Cacti families. Succulents are vital to the landscape in areas such as Florida that have sustained dry periods. New to succulents? THE LANDINGS EAGLE March 2015

March is a great month to fish on Siesta Key. It is the first month of spring, both on the calendar and outside. The list of available species is long; snook, redfish, trout, pompano, cobia, king and Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, flounder, snapper, grouper, jack crevelle, and sharks just to name a few. Big Pass will be very productive this month, particularly when the water is clean. Often times the tide is low in the morning, making the passes a great place to start off a trip and bend some rods. Ladyfish are usually thick, with bluefish, mackerel, and pompano mixed in. Live bait will work, but this is a great situation to cast artificial lures. Fish in the passes are usually actively feeding and can be seen busting baits on the surface. Gold Cotee grubs on a ¼ ounce jig head and (08) Rapala X-Raps are two effective lures. The sheepshead run will peak this month. Just about any structure near either pass will hold these tasty critters. A live shrimp fished on the bottom should result in a fish dinner pretty easily. Speckled trout will be schooled up over deep grass flats throughout the entire area. Incoming tides are best, but as long as the water is moving the fish will bite. A live shrimp under a noisy cork is a proven trout slayer. Jigs, spoons, and plugs will fool many fish, too. Pompano, mackerel, ladyfish, bluefish, jacks, and a stray cobia will also be encountered when fishing over the grass flats. These are large areas, the key to success is to keep moving until fish are located, do not spend too much time in one spot if it is not producing. Snook will move out of their winter retreats on their way out to

the Gulf to spawn. Any structure with a depth change is a likely place to catch a snook. Docks, bridges, and oyster bars are all very productive, especially those with some current. Plugs and scented soft plastic baits are the top choices, along with a large hand-picked shrimp. Fishing the area bridges at night is a great way to catch a bunch of snook. Free-lined live shrimp, artificial shrimp and plugs work well. Fly fisherman will score using any small white baitfish pattern. Remember, snook season is closed, handle the fish with care and release them unharmed. Surf fishing should be good for a variety of species providing the water is clear and not roiled up. Whiting, silver trout, flounder, pompano, Spanish mackerel, and ladyfish with hit both live shrimp and artificial lures. A jig tipped with a small piece of shrimp works well bounced along the bottom. Mackerel and ladyfish will hit flash lures such as silver spoons and plugs. I live shrimp fished on the bottom with just enough weight to get down is a simple but effective technique and will catch anything that swims. Anglers targeting pompano will do well with live or frozen sand fleas. The beach should come alive this month, provided the winds cooperate. Spanish and king mackerel will invade the area, along with cobia, sharks, and false albacore. The inshore reefs off of Lido Key are a great place to start, they hold a lot of fish. Trolling spoons and plugs is a deadly technique and will fill the cooler in short order. For more sport, look for breaking fish on the surface and cast plugs, spoons, or flies out into the frenzy, a vicious strike should occur immediately!

Siesta Key Round-Up Shifting Sands in Local Supermarket Landscape

The supermarket landscape continues to shift locally as smaller newcomers to the market nip at the heels of industry giant Publix. Whole Foods announced last month it will add a second area location with plans for a new store at the southwest corner of University Parkway and Honore Avenue near the recently opened UTC Mall. The new location will reportedly be roughly the same size as Whole Food’s existing store in downtown Sarasota. Meantime, according to Stan Rutstein of Re/Max Alliance in Bradenton, the Fresh Market is widely considered to be a lock to anchor the new Siesta Promenade center being developed by Benderson Development along the northern approach to the Stickney Point Bridge leading to the Key. Rutestein was quoted in a recent Herald Tribune story by Justine Griffin as saying “It’s

It was a good day fishing from the new gazebo at the Landings. Pictured: Norman Olshansky with Permit and yellow tailed Jack Cravalle. Photo by Sara Rhodes

common knowledge that when Benderson rolls that out the Fresh Market will be in there.” Whole Foods operates 420 stores nationally, but is expanding rapidly with plans to add upwards of 1000 locations over the next decade. The continued growth of the smaller store chains continues to fuel speculation that industry leader Publix will soon announce an aggressive “pocket” store strategy of its own and rumors on Siesta continue to center on a possible smaller store replacing the Wells Fargo bank branch on Midnight Pass Road. Some Publix employees have even reported rumors of a planned island development that would combine a smaller Publix with a liquor store and a condo development. Far fetched? Yes, but stranger things have happened on Siesta. One thing is certain: Publix didn’t get to the top of the supermarket food chain by ignoring its competitors.

Another #1 for Siesta Key

Visit Sarasota County held a press conference on February 18, to announce Siesta Key’s newest award; the 2015 Travelers’ Choice Award for the best U.S. beach from TripAdvisor. Siesta Key ranked first out of 25 other beaches. St. Pete Beach and Ka’anapali Beach in Hawaii came in second and third place. Rain forced Brian Wigelsworth, owner of Gidget’s Coastal Provisions in Siesta Key Village and founder of the Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition to design a smaller sculpture under the pavilion instead of the larger sculpture he originally proposed on the beach. He designed a sand version of the TripAdvisor’s award. He began work on Tuesday afternoon and completed the sculpture that evening. County officials and staff posed for photos along with the board members of the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce.

Pet of the Month My name is Winnie Whitman and I am a petite Goldendoodle born September 2014, in Fountain Inn ,South Carolina It’s fun living with my parents ,Bill and Sue on Pine Harrier Drive where there is a lot of activity. Apparently I have a pleasing “dognality” as I make people chuckle at my antics. I enjoy playing with dogs of all sizes at The Lakeview Dog Park on Sunday Mornings. I have two big dog friends, Jaxx and Cowboy who are very tolerant of my “puppy ways” and my friend Griff who likes me to chase him. Besides other dogs, I love people, car rides, playing games and “sniffing” . The other day I had an accidental swimming lesson when I fell in the pool. I discovered how to do the doggie paddle immediately. Mom pulled me out ....whew! On a more serious note, I am attending “doggie school” with the aim of becoming a therapy dog to help others. I hope to see you walking sometime in The Landings, a great place to live.

Wake & Shake

Just roll out of bed...your hair looks great! Shampoo and towel dry.... and you’re done! The style is in the cut, not the blowdry, so you don’t have to fuss with your hair to look good... even with fine, limp hair... and my new steam color process creates richer brunettes and spectacular blondes. The colors go deeper and last longer, yet are far more gentle to the hair. By Appointment Only with Ian:

Miles Kumpf is the new kid on the security block. You’ll find him working the main gate on the midnight shift three nights a week. Although he’s only been at The Landings little more than a month, he’s long on experience in the security field. His security career began several years ago working with Walmart, a couple private developments, Charlotte County and the new UTC Mall. Kumpf said, “I like it for the fact that 90% of it is pretty easy and laid back and most of it is also common sense.” He recently earned his license to do armed security work. Once he holds a position that utilizes that license, Kumpf believes he’ll have had a taste of just about everything in the security business. Kumpf has a diverse educational background. He went to public elementary school through fourth grade, a private school through seventh grade, and then was homeschooled until attending the Florida

Youth Challenge Academy. The Academy is a para-military high school on a National Guard base in Starke. Kumpf learned a lot there sharing a barracks with 49 other guys. “It was worth it”, he said. Born in Boulder Colorado, Kumpf moved to North Port with his family in 2009. He enjoys working out and combat/self defense training. After returning to martial arts training, he is well on his way to earning a black belt.
