SPEEDERS BEWARE

LMA Board takes steps to protect pedestrians

Various attempts to reduce instances of speeding by lowering the speed limit in portions of the roads, with the use of speed bumps, and acquiring a speed sentry sign that warns drivers of speeds in excess of the posted limit have not deterred the handful that continue to violate this rule. For that reason, beginning February 4, the LMA Board instituted a new program designed to identify drivers who violate the posted speed limits. Safety concerns keeps this problem a top priority for the board and why new measures have been implemented. The combination of winding roads

that are narrow in places, the ever increasing use of the roadways by pedestrians and cyclists, and the increasing traffic all contribute to an environment in which vehicles traveling at unsafe speeds places anyone using the roads at risk. A letter sent to each Landings household last month detailed the new plan. The features of this program are: • The use of a properly calibrated radar detector that will simultaneously take a picture of the car and license plate, record the location of where the picture was taken, and accurately record the speed at which the vehicle

was traveling. • This radar detector will be hand-held and, therefore, can be easily used on any of Landings roadways. • The radar detector will be used for random periods on random days at varying random locations. • The owner of the car can be identified by the license plate, either on file with the Gate or having been recorded when the visitor or vendor comes through the Visitor gate. After identification of the vehicle through this process appropriate action will be taken following the guidelines already in place. The LMA Board is not

interested in “punishing” drivers that may stray a few miles over the limit. It is the driving habits of those chronic reckless speeders the board hopes this program can change. Remember, our roads are our walkways. For everyone’s safety, please drive safely.
