Safety & Security Community Announces Special Town Meeting By Neil Goldman, Letitia Schuman, Mike Knupp Landings / Safety & Security Com
The Landings Safety & Security Committee will hold a town meeting for Landings residents on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to listen to residents’ concerns related to safety & security in our community. The committee believes community input will help us better serve the residents if we understand their concerns and listen to their suggestions. A primary topic to be discussed will center on the issue of speeding in our community. We want to hear from residents what steps the committee could take that might help alleviate speeding in The Landings. Another topic to be discussed will be the overall security in our community. We want to hear what residents have to say about our overall safety and security, and what The Landings could do to improve the overall situation. We will also invite a representative from the Sheriff’s office to answer questions and provide us with information on their investigative procedures and ideas to make the community safer. In the last few weeks The Landings has experienced a number of security incidents that have caused concerns for many residents.
We have had many questions regarding these incidents and have tried to provide residents with the facts, as we know them, by first-hand witnesses and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. Additionally, when these types of incidents pose a potential ongoing risk to our residents we have done an e-blast to alert people of the situation. Specifically, in the last two weeks, two cars have been stolen in The Landings, one from the driveway of a home and the other from a resident’s garage. Both cars were located by the sheriff and their investigation is ongoing. These incidents prompted the committee to issue a warning email to the residents to make sure they lock up their cars and houses at night or if they are away from their residences, and close their garages. (In order to not hamper the investigation, we have not provided the names and addresses of the victims or any of the assumptions of the sheriff related to these investigations.) With regard to the incident involving gun shots in the mangroves behind Eagles Point 1, we have followed up with the residents who witnessed the incident, and the sheriff’s department. The sheriff informed us that the
shots came from two hunters duck hunting in the mangroves somewhere between Eagles point and the Intracoastal Waterway. When the sheriff made contact with the hunters they were not hunting on Landings property. They were in the water. At that point the men were not violating Florida law as they were not trespassing on Landings property, and they had all proper hunting licenses. Therefore no arrests were made and no report was filed. There remains the issue of hunters firing close to our building and the tennis courts that don’t appear to violate any Florida laws. As far as the sheriff is concerned, the incident is closed, but the committee is looking into options to shore up this problem. We expect this Town Hall meeting to be comprehensive. Topics to be discussed will be varied and could encompass extra roving patrols, speed bumps and calming tables, closing the north and south gates earlier at night or closing those gates permanently, or anything else a resident wishes to discuss. If you wish to share any of your views concerning speeding or overall security, please attend this town hall meeting. We hope you can attend.
Save the date! THE LANDINGS FREE COLLEGE FINALE will be the last Thursday in March. (Date: March 26th, at 2:30 p.m.).

President’s Column By Norman Olshansky Congratulations to our new board members, Jim Goldman and Jeff Smith. They will join Dick Bayles, Doug Day, Roger Kidder, Mike Knupp, Joan Koplin, Paul Weiner, and yours truly. Elections were held at our February meeting and the following officers will lead us this year. Norman Olshansky - President Mike Knupp - Vice President Dick Bayles - Treasurer Jim Goldman - Secretary Thanks to Dick Bayles for his prompt response and solution to the problem we had with the software handling gate decals. Our maintenance chair and staff are working with the school board to keep their buses from running over the curbs at our entrance and causing damage. The signs that were approved for the north and south gate entries should be installed this month. We are having problems with cars trying to quickly follow someone in front of them through the gates which has resulted in frequent damage to the gates. When we identify those responsible they will be billed for damages. Please watch your speed while driving in The Landings. Our radar is back from repairs and violators will be identified.
Upcoming events of note:
On March 11th at 7 p.m. there will be a special meeting of all residents to give input and discuss issues related to security. See the front page article in this edition of The Eagle for more details. Our March 18th happy hour will be special from 6-9 p.m. BYOB and
appetizer and put on your dancing shoes. This month DJ Karolina, who was at our holiday party, will provide the music. Pre-registration is required. There will be a $5 cover charge. Sign up at the club. Pay in advance or put it on your LRC bill. No cash will be taken at the door. Mark your calendars for the Landolier’s Concert on Sunday, March 29th. At 4 p.m., admission $5 includes refreshments. The next group bike ride will be on Sunday April 19th. More details to follow. On January 21st, gunfire was heard adjacent to Eagles Point Circle. Sherriff cars and helicopter responded. The case was investigated and it was determined there were duck hunters on the water near Phillippi Creek who were legally hunting. No arrests were made. We spoke with Florida Fish and Wildlife. Their regulations allow duck hunting “in season” when in the water and using appropriate safe shooting practices. Since they were not caught on Landings property there were no arrests made. In the future anyone hunting on land on our property would be considered trespassing. All concerns and any evidence of gunfire should be reported to the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office by calling 911. Your new leadership is looking forward to working with you for another great year in The Landings. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or suggestions. LHA Board Meeting & Annual Meeting By Dick Bayles The Landings Homeowners Association held its Annual Meeting of Members in addition to its regular board meeting on February 13, 2020. At the regular meeting, the board approved new exterior paint colors for residences on Kestral Park Way S and Peregrine Point Circle W. It also approved roof tile replacement on a residence on Kestral Park Place. At the Association’s Annual Meeting of Members, part of the quorum comprised 58 members who returned their proxy electronically (of the 126 who have enrolled in the program). If you are one of the enrollees that didn’t respond, please be sure to add our email address landings.homeowners@outlook.com to your safe senders list and check your spam/junk mail folder to see if the emails were diverted there. We encourage electronic participation as it reduces our administrative time and expense. The form to enroll
is on the Association’s page on The Landings website. As the Association’s Bylaws were changed in 2019 to provide for no election if the number of candidates was equal to the number of open positions, the current board members were reelected to the Board. At the subsequent organizational meeting, the 2019-20 officers were reelected for the 2020-21 year: Bill Whitman President Judy Greene Vice President Dick Bayles S e c r e t a r y / Treasurer Harvey Greller Director Jane Hyslop Director Mike Knupp Director James Stewart Director The next regular board meeting of the Association is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. March 13, 2020 at the Landings Racquet Club.
The Inquisitives The next meeting of “ The Inquisitives” is Thursday evening, March 26 at 7 p.m., in the Lake Room of the Landings Racquet Club. The topic to be discussed is: Issues to Consider for Living Arrangements When Aging or Needing. What is the Emotional, Social and Fiscal Impact???
All Landings residents are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion. Beverages and other refreshments will be provided. Alan Friedberg adf1209@comcast.net 603-759-1066

LMA meeting notes LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky, announced the following during his president’s report: • Letitia Schuman had to withdraw her name as a board candidate for personal reasons. As a result, there are five candidates for the five open positions. • Dick Bayles was thanked for his quick response in solving a problem with the gate entry decals. • The maintenance committee is working with the school board in an effort to reduce or eliminate continuing curb damage by school buses. • Within minutes of installing the new signs to direct traffic from the north and south gates to the main gate, the sign was destroyed by a vehicle. The damaged sign will be repaired and reinstalled at a better location. Additional signs may also be installed; however, Olshansky is not confident the signs will accomplish their intended task. • Everyone was asked to warn residents about vehicles tailgating during entry. Gates are being damaged by this practice. Owners who are identified damaging the gates are being charged for the damages. • The Landoliers will be performing Sunday, March 29 at 4 p.m. The group now includes several singers who have performed professionally, as well as the new conductor who has performed on Broadway and in Las Vegas. • After an investigation by the sheriff’s department regarding gunshots heard at The Landings on January 21, the shots were determined to have been from duck hunters.
FINANCE REPORT
Treasurer, Dick Bayles reported the committee is still awaiting the completion of audit results from 2019. With that in mind, he expects it will show $82,000 added to surplus last year. Underspending on landscaping and drainage was the primary cause of the surplus. Bayles moved to transfer the final addition to surplus funds from 2019, approximately $82,000, to the Lakes and Drainage reserve. After some discussion the motion passed unanimously.
MANAGER’S REPORT
Landings Manager, George Neil reported the following: • Sarasota County picked up all the old recycling bins and repaired street lights. • Welcome letters have been sent to new owners. • Preparations were made for the

Letters to the Editor It should be obvious, to those who walk/drive around The Landings property, that our roads are in bad shape and in need of serious restoration. At the most recent board meeting, during a discussion of the road situation, it was revealed that the road repaving reserve fund was woefully underfunded and somewhere around a million dollars short of the current estimates, to rejuvenate. A suggested approach taken by the board to this problem was weak to unacceptable to many of us. The approach was to postpone the restoration process well into the future in a section by section approach. There are a number of issues that should peak one’s interest. The roads for the tree houses were repaved around 2014 when Don McMurray was the LMA board president (and a tree house resident). It was known at that time that the reserve funds were inadequate but little to nothing was done to address this deficit other than a plan involving deferring the problem. Here we are years later watching our roads continually disintegrate while the board concocts more deferments.
The current solution is to patch the worst areas, an approach which results in inadequate and unsightly roadways. The board’s plan is to institute a section by section approach (as the pool of money in the reserves are replenished) which can then be used for restoration of the next section. This will take years which I feel is unacceptable. Local real estate agents point to our deteriorating roads as a reason properties are more difficult to sell in The Landings and that a drive through comparable communities would show what nice, healthy roads should look like. The developing impression is that The Landings is evolving into “a tired, poorly managed community”. These impressions, once entrenched, are hard to reverse. It is my belief that the board has the responsibility to maintain property values, properly maintain the property in a timely fashion, and develop a fee structure that addresses the needs of our infrastructure. I have lived here for over a decade and to my knowledge there has not been one assessment levied by the LMA. I love this place and would not choose to leave, so it pains me to see such mismanagement. While
no one wants to shell out money capriciously, it is high time for the board to address this issue of deteriorating roads aggressively and not anguish over possible blowback. Possible Solutions: • Raise fees on a temporary or permanent basis • Levy a one-time assessment • Take out a Loan • DO SOMETHING NOW!! Finally, I recognize that the board is made up of mainly retired people from all walks of life. While they are highly intelligent, well intentioned, altruistic volunteers, generally speaking, they don’t seem to want to take unpopular positions (such as raising money) to fulfill their obligations. Occasionally, unpopular positions are the best of a few bad options. In my opinion, the road restoration needs to be addressed immediately, aggressively, and competently. I encourage anyone who feels sympathy with my position, to join me in a full-throated campaign to generate action. Frank Pipers 4785 Pine Harrier Dr. 561-702-9039 (call for a good time)
LAKES
Co-Chairs Michael Knupp and Roger Kidder reported fountains clogged by algae blooms are now working and new lights have been installed. New timers have been ordered for three lakes that have undergone light circuit breaker issues. Lake 6 erosion control work has started. Sarasota County Neighborhood Environmental Stewardship Team coordinator, Mollie Holland spoke about erosion prevention to Lake 1 homeowners.
ENVIRONMENTAL
• Committee chair, Maralyn Kaufman-David, Ph.D, Mike Knupp and Jeff Durante will be working to resolve an issue regarding renewed algae blooms and invasive overgrowth along the shoreline of Lake 3. • The IPM island on Flicker Field is thriving without the use of pesticides. • The February 20th Free College event will feature Bob Manteiga of The Landings and Ann Paul of Sarasota Audubon. They will speak about the wide variety of birds at The Landings.
Duck Hunting
I wish to bring an incident to the attention of Landings’ residents that occurred Jan 21. I had invited four guests for dinner when about 4:30 we heard shotguns fired. This continued for almost 45 minutes and originated in a tidal pond between the Intracoastal Waterway and Eagles Point 1 and 2 condominiums. One house guest observed two hunters soon after the shots were fired, one of whom bent down to put what appeared to be a dead bird in a bag. I immediately called 911 and soon after two detectives arrived. One detective stayed in my unit for about 15 minutes and actually observed the continued shooting. She and her partner then went down the nature walk leading to the pier attempting to apprehend the shooters. Soon a helicopter arrived to observe what was happening. After the last shots were fired we observed the hunters walking north toward the nature walk. The detective I had spoken with kept
me informed of the progress of the investigation and ultimately phoned me to say that the sheriff’s department had informed her that it was duck hunting season and nothing illegal had taken place. I later learned that the two hunters had been encountered by both deputies. Believing that shotgun fire and hunting were not permitted in The Landings mangrove areas (or anywhere, for that matter), board members of the Eagles Point 1 condominium reported what had happened to the Landings Safety Committee. They were told that the committee concurred with the sheriff’s department findings. On Jan 30 two board members and I attended the annual meeting and election of officers of The Landings Board of Directors. We had prepared a lengthy report, including maps, of the Jan 21 incident. The president of the board included a brief report of the incident in his summary of the status of projects at The Land-
ings and then asked for questions and/or comments. I requested to speak and give my firsthand account of what had happened but was summarily interrupted and asked not to continue. I am incensed at what happened the day of the shooting and that I was not allowed to speak at an open meeting of members of The Landings community. Any reasonable person would conclude that hunting is not permitted anywhere in The Landings, especially in our mangroves. The Landings, after all, was named for the migratory birds which call the mangroves home. Of all places, the mangroves should be protected from the kind of assault I witnessed approximately 1,000 feet from my living room Jan 21. I respectfully request that this incident be further investigated and that all Landings residents be apprised of what happened. Paul W. Weber Eagles Point 1 Resident

Here are some great insights and tips from Jen Fiers on her experiences playing club leaguematches and exhibitions. Competing in the USTA Leagues and local exhibitions has been so fun and rewarding as an adult even after many years of competing in international and national junior competitions, Division I collegiate teams, and professional satellite/challenger tours. I have been playing leagues for over ten years and it brought me back to competitive tennis after several years of not playing at all while I was in graduate school. It helped me find my game again and I’ve met some amazing women through our teams. Last month, my team won the Florida State Championships for the 4.0 - 5.0 Tri-Levels in Lake Nona at the USTA National Tennis Center. The facility has close to 100 courts and hosts professional, collegiate, and junior competitions.
Every time I play there, my game level rises because the atmosphere reminds me of when I won national championships as a junior and played the NCAA Tournaments for the University of Florida and the University of Virginia as a top-10 nationally ranked doubles player. I feel like I am my 20-year-old self again (except smarter and more sore!) when I compete at this level. My partners, Landings member Amy Lyons and former Landings resident Kelly Dancer, were undefeated on the 5.0 court. Playing with each of them and finding the way to win each match was such a fun experience. With Amy, we won two matches using our aggressive strategy where one of us would close the net while the other staggered back to the service line to cover the potential lob and backup volley. Many points, Amy used her crosscourt consistency from the baseline while I waited to pounce on the poaching volley. With Kelly, we had to change our game plan and play more patiently while keeping the ball away from one of the players who never missed. They used their drop shots and lobs quite effectively which forced me to stand further back on the service line, but Kelly and I were able to defend most of them until we got the attacking ball to end the points. It felt so good to close that match and clinch our Championship! Our next league competition is in April
in Lake Nona for the 40-and-Over 5.0 Women’s Division. Locally, I play in our monthly exhibitions at the Landings Racquet Club every third Friday of the month at 3:30 p.m. which as been so fun, especially in front of our amazing members. For the past month, I have also been playing the pro exhibition series at The Boca Grande Club (where I was Director before coming to The Landings). The players in this series include women who were ranked in the top 100 on the WTA tour. In the semifinals, I was able to play well enough to advance to the Finals with Karin Miller, Brittany Lashway, and Jessica Steck on Wednesday, February 26th at 3:00 p.m. I love to play as well as coach this awesome game. I have students who range from ages 3 to 91. I teach players at the beginning stages as well as players who used to play professionally. This game has taught me so much about perseverance, dedication, tenacity, respect, and self-belief and I love helping others build their games around these concepts. The Landings has been so welcoming to me this year and I have had a great season here! Don’t forget to come watch our next pro exhibition on Friday, March 20th 3:30-4:30 p.m. See you on the courts! We had a very successful Pancake Breakfast “Koffee Klatsch” on January 28th. Thank you to our expert pancake chefs Nelson & Dawn Smith. They made and served the most delicious blueberry and banana pancakes. We hold a Koffee Klatsch breakfast twice a month on the second Wednesday and the fourth Tuesday of each month. If you are craving more delicious pancakes, the next Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for March 24th. As many of you know, our logo merchandise in the Pro Shop has been at a bare minimum for some time. Antigua, our long-time apparel vendor, made the decision to do away with their tennis line. It was tough for us as they were a great fit for The Landings. I’m
happy to announce that we will be getting some new merchandise in the Pro Shop with an embroidered logo for both men and women during the month of March. If there is something you want that we don’t normally carry in the Pro Shop, please check with me. I may be able to special order it for you. I frequently get shoes, racquets, string, clothing, sunglasses and other merchandise for members. Most of the time I’m even able to save you money in the process. Be sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming social events. Mo & Jen are doing a tennis exhibition every third Friday of the month at 3:30 p.m. They are bringing in other local pros and even some of the top junior players in the area. The annual CANUKUS Challenge, organized by John Fournier and Alan Thompson, is scheduled for March 22nd at 10:00 a.m. This is where nationally ranked players from Canada and the UK challenge nationally ranked players from the US in three men’s doubles matches. Admission is free but we do ask you to bring some non-perishable food items for the All Faiths Food Bank. To stay up to date with social activities at the Club, be sure to get on my email distribution list. I normally send out a notice on Fridays letting you know what is happening the following week.
Put on a Happy Face: Landoliers in Concert March 29th By Norman Olshansky / Photos by Dee Ricapito We have so much talent in The Landings and on Sunday, March 29th, at 4 p.m. at the Landings Racquet Club, you will have an opportunity to hear your friends and neighbors in the Landoliers perform choral selections under the direction of Suzanne Stearns and piano accompaniment by Barbara Rothman. The Landolier music this year is special, including such popular hits as a tribute to Cole Porter, music from Carousel, Melancholy Baby, Love is a Many Splendored Thing, You Raise me Up, and many other of your favorite top hits from the not so distant past. There will also be solos and a few additional surprises. Admission will be $5 at the door which includes refreshments following the performance. The Landings Free College now h e a d s i n t o i t s h o m e s t re t c h . This season, our seventh, has been terrific, with attendance surpassing all records. (People know what’s good.) Classes will be held again on Thursday afternoons at 2:30. And Judy and Tara will again graciously provide refreshments after the last session. March 5, Frank Pipers will attack another scientific topic in his inimitable style: “Cleanliness, d isease a nd you r i m mu n it y - p r e p a r e b e f o r e i t ’s t o o late.” Frank says: “All of us are confronted on a daily basis by millions of microorganisms, toxins and the like, that wish to ravage our bodies and to use it for fuel, warmth and (of course) reproduction. Our epic struggle to win these battles has a fascinating history and an even more interesting future. This multimedia presentation reveals, in a most palatable fashion, how we got where we are and offers
a glimpse of where we seem to be going. For those who remain awake there may even be a door prize.” March 12, Learning about family history is important. It is essential to understanding ourselves, helps to keep memories alive and allows each generation to have an idea of who they are and where they come from. It helps us gain a greater understanding of the challenges previous generations faced, and often inspires greater love and compassion for their flaws and mistakes. Ray Lee will present this topic, on which he is an authority. His title: ‘Where did I come from? -- Researching your Family History”. March 19, There are an amazingly large number of statues around the world which are irresistible – people just can’t refrain from touching them, rubbing them or even kissing them. You will be amazed! Newcomer Reception and Upcoming March 18th Dance Party! By Paige Packman / Photos by Bob Manteiga We welcomed over 20 new Landings residents to the Newcomer Reception on February 19th. Norm Olshansky gave an overview of life at The Landings Community and Kevin Lechlitner encouraged them to take advantage of the many and varied activities at the LRC. The fun continued on into the evening with the monthly LRC Happy Hour with a record 88 attendees! The food spread just
keeps getting better and there were many wine varietals and beer to choose from. Thanks to greeters Betty and Rich Greenspan, and to photographer Bob Manteiga and his assistant Heidi Nightengale. And to many people who helped with setup and cleanup, always much appreciated!

This is the Jazz Club’s biggest festival ever! Headed up by the brilliant clarinetist, Ken Peplowski, the celebration promises a week of unforgettable performances. As music director for the mainstage concerts, Ken has booked spectacular stars from the world of jazz. The Manhattan Transfer will headline the festival, which also features performances by Dick Hyman, Clairdee, Houston Person, Charles McPherson, Russell Malone, Terell Stafford, festival band La Lucha-Alejandro Arenas, Mark Feinman, and John O’Leary. Gordon Garrett first volunteered with the Jazz Club of Sarasota in 2003. He was elected President a year later, and held that volunteer office for eight years, during which he helped grow the organization. Gordon’s executive skills were finely honed from decades of managing companies throughout NY, Chicago and Washington DC. He had also worked several years for Lion’s Club International Foundation, an organization with half billion $$$ in the bank and no professional manager – at least until Gordon arrived on the scene. His adventures in the orient remain a colorful chapter in his fascinating life. The Jazz Club of Sarasota had been founded in 1980, more than 20 years before Gordon and his late wife moved here. L-R: Rob King and Nemera Weyessa, World Games Gold Medal winners. A few years ago, Landings resident, Rob King put on a table tennis exhibition with some members of his club for The Landings Free College. They WOW’d us with their performance. Rob had an incredibly exciting table tennis adventure this summer. In June he played in the National Senior Games in Albuquerque. While he only made it to the second round, he and his wife, Karen Burke, enjoyed touring Albuquerque and Santa Fe after the tournament. In October, Rob warmed up for the World Senior Games by first playing in the Nevada Senior Games near Las Vegas. While there he and his partner, Alan Hammerand from California, where chosen randomly (they actually never played together before) picked up a Silver medal by finishing second in the Random-Draw Doubles Tournament. A few days later at the World Senior Games in St George, Utah, Rob competed in several age-related tournaments. There Rob won a
Bronze Medal in the Mens 70-74 singles tournament. He also won another Bronze for finishing third in the age related 55-59 Men’s Doubles Tournament. He played with his partner who was 57 years old. Rob said, “My biggest thrill was getting the Gold Medal for the Double-tiered Doubles Championship”. There, he and his partner Nemera Weyessa, of Ethiopia now living in California, finished first out of 36 teams. Rob’s main goal was to keep the ball in play so that Nemera could hit a winner. Rob fully credits Nemera for their victories. He says that Nemera would hit the ball so hard it would sting the opponents. Rob says, “While I’m an average tournament player, I get a great deal of enjoyment out of the game and have made some friends as a result of play. I’d encourage anyone who is interested in playing to contact me or the Sarasota Table Tennis Club which has information about it on its Facebook page.” We at The Landings are proud of all your accomplishments.

FRIENDS....Are Good for You! By Dee Ricapito Friendships are born in a million different ways. Is it magic that draws people together when we go from acquaintances to close pals? I know girlfriends chat, vent, lend a compassionate ear, and can be a tremendous source of love and support in the midst of everyday craziness. Finding a good friend is like finding a gift that keeps giving. For example, friendships keep us alive longer, helps us ward off stress, exercising with a friend makes us more resilient, even helps with depression and loneliness.
When we were children it was easy to make friends in school or romping around. Yet, keeping those long-time childhood friends even living thousands of miles away is a treasure. Whether celebrating life’s milestone event, or in a crowd having fun at a Super Bowl party, or just a quiet lunch with a girlfriend, means the world simply knowing you’re with those you trust to have your best good at heart. You never know, the friend you make today might be a friend for life.

BIRDS IN OUR BACKYARD
Happiness is… Reunions Ah, Spring. A time for renewal and rebirth. At Abel’s Ice Cream, owner Jerry Williams loves this season because of the joy he gets from reuniting with his favorite snowbirds. “It’s like meeting up with old friends when someone walks in the door who’s been out of town for months,” he said. Not surprising that Jerry becomes friends with his customers. One of the most frequent review comments about Abel’s Ice Cream is the friendliness of the staff. And that all starts with him. And right now, he’s even happier than usual. It’s almost a guarantee that the next time you walk into Abel’s for your favorite sweet treat, Williams will be sporting his Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Championship hat. “Fifty years in the making.” He smiled. “Of course, I’m ready to talk about it.” Along with the wide variety of delicious ice cream flavors that are available year-round, Abel’s is kicking off Spring featuring a seasonal flavor, Purple Daze (Black Raspberry ice cream with a black raspberry crinkle, and dark chocolate black raspberry cups.) and our most popular flavor, Stellar Coffee (If you’re a coffee lover, this is a must have... there is no better! Rich Coffee Club® ice cream with delicious fudge and mini dark chocolate coffee cups.)

Ann Paul’s presentation on Florida’s wading birds.
The Landi ngs Free College session on February 20th about birds in our area was a great success. The event attracted over 70 attendees. Maralyn Kaufman, LMA Environmental Committee Chairperson, introduced the two presenters, Robert Manteiga and Ann Paul. Robert, a Landings resident with an avid interest in photography and birds. showed a mesmerizing video of his photos of birds of Sarasota in flight, nesting, feeding, etc. This was followed by a presentation on Florida’s wading birds by Ann Paul, Tampa Bay Regional Coordinator of Audubon’s Florida Coastal Islands Sanctuaries. Ms. Paul is an expert on water bird populations and management of

coastal habitats for wildlife. She currently serves on the boards of the Tampa Bay Conservancy, the Florida Birding and Nature Festival, and the Friends of the Crystal River NWR, and is a past president of the Tampa Audubon Society.

Getting to know the artists of The Landings By Marie-Louise McHugh Today I am featuring a truly professional artist, Anne Ireland, landscape painter. I first met with her at her home in the Treehouses at The Landings and later at her studio at Towles Court in downtown Sarasota. This is her second winter at The Landings. Anne and
for the last 35 years. In Sarasota they first bought a house at Palmer Ranch but Anne found it too isolating. She loves the community she found at The Landings. Anne grew up in New York City. When she was very young her mother always made sure she
hard work give her a sense of selfworth. Painting also brings calm into her life. If you have not visited the artists’ studios at the Towles Court Artist Colony don’t hesitate to do so soon. Anne’s space is at 1938 Adams Lane where she works with nine other artists. The studios are open to visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 11-4 p.m. The Towles Court Artist Colony is a hidden treasure at the edge of downtown Sarasota with galleries, shops and restaurants. Anne has worked there since 2016. The Towles Court Artist Colony will have an Art Walk on March 20, 2020. More information about this in available on www. towlescourt.com. Her work is represented by several galleries in Maine. She is also the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships. Last year I stumbled onto a short documentary

her husband spend the summer on had paints and enrolled her in their farm in Portland on the coast Life Drawing classes. She started of Maine, where they have lived painting the human figure early.
When the time came to choose a college, Anne chose Bowdoin College over the Rhode Island School of Design, because she felt the need to get a more general education. Even there, she managed to design and work on theater sets. With her Bachelor of Arts degree, she went to work for CBS television as a news researcher then became an associate producer for the Charles Kuralt show “Sunday Morning”. She was part of the original staff of this show. After moving to Maine, as a married mother of three children under five, she enrolled in adult education art classes and ended up getting a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This changed her life and she has been working as an artist ever since. Anne is not an outdoorsy person but the landscape inspires her, the landscape around her farm in particular. It gives her a solid reference for all her paintings. She interprets the landscape in a slightly abstract way with warm and beautiful colors. This is called contemporary realism. Her palette is soft, with grays, blues, greens in addition to muted warm tones. When I visited Anne at her studio at the Towles Court, she was working on several oil paintings depicting the Maine landscape. She paints the natural beauty she sees around her in a very expressive way. Painting the land-

scape can be a challenge because of the scope of information that one gets looking at it. Her great talent is to interpret it in simple ways, showing us what she feels is important to her. Last year, while in Sarasota, she produced 30 paintings for a one person show at the Elizabeth Moss Gallery in Falmouth, Maine. Anne Says that painting gives her an identity, while productivity and
promoting the State of Maine which featured Anne as a Maine painter of note. Besides having her work in many galleries, you may have seen her paintings on the cover of LL Bean catalogs. Just for Laughs Compiled by Dee Ricapito & staff Why does the female black widow spider kill the male after mating? ...To stop the snoring before it starts! A man and his wife were awakened by the sound of someone knocking on their front door. The guy got up and opened the window. “Who’s out there?” he yelled. A voice from below called out, “I need a push.” “It’s three o’clock in the morning!” The man hollered. “Get lost before I call the cops.” His wife rolled over and said, “Honey, remember when our children got stuck in their car late one night and that couple helped them get it started? Wouldn’t you want to do the same for someone else, regardless of the time?” The guy hesitated for a moment, then headed downstairs to lend the man a hand. He opened the front door and yelled out, “Hey, do you still need a push?” “Yes!” replied a voice from the darkness. “I’m over here, on the swing.” A man walked into a drugstore and asked the pharmacist if he has something to cure hiccups. The pharmacist promptly reached out and slapped the fellow’s face. “What did you do that for?” the man asked. “Well, you don’t have the hiccups anymore, do you? “No, but my wife in the car still does!”
A cop stop
Submitted by: Bev Leidel A Texas State patrolman notices a car going exceedingly slow. Out of concern for safety, he makes a traffic stop. As he approached the car the driver, an elderly woman, rolls down her window and tells him she was not speeding. He asks for her driver’s license and proof of insurance; then, tells her the reason she was pulled over was because she was driving dangerously slowly. She said that she was exceedingly careful not to drive a mile over - nor a mile under the speed limit. The officer asks, “What do you think the speed limit is?” She replies, “21”. He says, “Oh NO ma’am, that’s the highway number. The speed limit is 70 miles per hour!” The officer proceeds to look in the back seat and noticed the two elderly woman that were crouched in their seat, all wind-blown and ashen-faced; he asked, “Are you alright?” One of them replied, “we just got off County Road 117!” Johnny came home excided to tell his dad that he got a part in the upcoming school play. “That’s great,” says dad. “What will your role be?” Johnny replied with excitement, “I’ll be playing the role of a man married for 25 years!” “Congratulations Johnny,” says dad. “Next time, maybe you’ll get a speaking part!” A three-year-old walks over to a pregnant lady while waiting with his mother in the doctor’s office. “Why is your stomach so big?” he asks. “I’m having a baby,” she replies. “Is the baby in your stomach?” he asks, with his big eyes. “Yes, it is,” she says. “Is it a good baby?” he asks, with a puzzled look. “Oh, yes. A really good baby,” the lady replies. Shocked and surprised, he asks: “Then why did you eat him?”

Teacher: “If I gave you 2 cats and another 2 cats and another 2, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “No, listen carefully... If I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples, and another two apples and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Six.” Teacher: “Good. Now if I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven!” Teacher: “Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!” Johnny: “Because I’ve already got a freaking cat!” If you’d like to share your favorite joke, please email to Dee at ricapito@ icloud.com

A local United Way office realized that the organization had never received a donation from the town’s most successful lawyer. The person in charge of contributions called him to persuade him to contribute. “Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least $500,000, you did not give a penny to charity. Wouldn’t you like to give back to the community in some way?” The lawyer mulled this over for a moment and replied, “First, did your research also show that my mother is dying after a long illness, and has medical bills that are several times her annual income?” Embarrassed, the United Way rep mumbled, “Um, no.” The lawyer interrupts, “Or that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair?” The stricken United Way rep began to stammer out an apology, but was interrupted again. “Or that my sister ’s husband died in a traffic accident,” the lawyer’s voice rising in indignation, “leaving her penniless with three children?!” The humiliated United Way rep, completely beaten, said simply, “I had no idea.” On a roll, the lawyer cut him off once again, “So if I don’t give any money to them, why should I give any to you?”

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “And what starting salary are you looking for?” The engineer replies, “In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package.” The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks’ vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?” The engineer sits up straight and says, “Wow! Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it.”
