A lender has filed a foreclosure lawsuit against the Delaware-based company that owns the majority of the property within the Landings Shopping Center. According to the lis pendens suit filed in December, 2015 in the Circuit Court of the 12th Judicial Circuit, the Plaintiff, U.S. Bank, National Association, as trustee for Morgan Stanley Capital Inc., has instituted the foreclosure filing against the owner, Landings of Sarasota Florida LLC. A total of at least three parcels — filling about 93,000 square feet of indoor space — within the Landings Shopping Center are included in the foreclosure suit. However, the free-standing buildings near the shopping center — including Sweet Tomatoes and Olive Garden — are separately owned and not impacted by the foreclosure proceedings. In addition, the parcel that houses the Publix grocery space, 4840 S. Tamiami Trail, is also
separately owned, by Publix Super Markets Inc., and thus is not impacted by the proceedings. The plaza, at 4800 S. Tamiami Trail, was built in 1988, according to Sarasota County Property Records. Centrally located on Tamiami Trail, the shopping center is one of the largest in the county, but has been hit with a spate of vacant storefronts, including Office Depot, which recently left the center. Starting in 2014, the national office retailer began closing hundreds of stores nationally. According to the foreclosure suit, the original mortgage for the property was recorded Oct. 5,2005. The shopping center is located on U.S. 41 just outside The Landings, and neither the plaza nor its owner Landing of Sarasota Florida LLC is affiliated with The Landings or LMA in any way. There is a total of ten parcels within the center.

Walk up to the front door on Starling Drive, and you are greeted with a doormat t h a t s a y s W I P E Y O U R PAWS, and a door sign that says A SPOILED ROTTEN SCHNAUZER LIVES HERE. Francis Hoang answers the door looking about 28 years old, although he’s 45. He is followed by Aria, age 2 ½, who greets me with a “High Five.” In a nearby high chair sits Hanh, 15 months old, looking EXTREMELY skeptical at the arrival of a stranger. Jessie Hoang steps forward with a smile, shaking my hand and welcoming me. This slim youthful lady is also a
pediatrician who works for All Children’s Hospital at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. There, her official title is Pediatric Hospitalist: she admits kids and stabilizes them, takes care of them while they are in the hospital, and ultimately discharges them. She also takes care of well babies when they are born, examining them to be sure they are healthy before releasing them to go home. Francis and Jessie met seven years ago when they were both students at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. Continued on page 25
Commercial Realtor Ron Flynn said commercial foreclosure proceedings could span a lengthy range of time, up to several years, to resolve. If the bank does take possession of the center, at that time the bank could opt to either get a broker to list the commercial property on the market or auction it off, Flynn said. An auction sale would likely result in a lower sale price, a scenario which could allow a new owner to come in and rent the retail spaces at lower rates that could be viewed by retailers as more competitive with other, nearby commercial rents. Either method of sale could attract potential investors drawn to the shopping center’s central location on U.S. 41 between Bee Ridge Road and Clark Road. According to real-estate leasing information advertised online, more than 50,000 daily drivers pass the plaza.

At the March meeting several raised the issue of congestion on Landings Blvd. (in the LRC area) and on Starling Drive when mail is being delivered and landscapers and or delivery trucks are in the vicinity. At the Treehouses the mail carriers park in parking pads next to visitors parking. Since the mailboxes in the congested areas are next to visitor parking, it was agreed with the primary mail carrier that he would try parking in the guest spots. Rules of the Road Reminders
The Eagle Has Landed
Submitted by: Neil Goldman, Safety & Security Committee Chair and Barbara Chertok, Committee Member
Walkers — Walk AGAINST traffic. Additionally, since we have no sidewalks, it is suggested to walk no more than two abreast and walk in a single file when necessary in narrower areas. Although pedestrians generally do have the right of way, walkers should use common sense. In narrower areas walking two or three abreast is not safe. Night Walkers — Wear reflective gear and/or use a flashlight to alert drivers you are on the road. Dog Walkers — Have your dog walk on the grass while you walk on the road. Bikers — Ride with the traffic as close to the edge of the road as practical. Night Bikers — Wear reflective gear and use a bike light. Pets — All pets should be under control at all times. Drivers — Please obey all posted speed limits and stop signs. Be aware of pedestrians, bikes, mini-bikes, golf carts, stray animals and other vehicles. Do not tailgate another vehicle because you think it is moving too slowly. Please share these comments with your guests and visitors. This article will be published from time to time. If you would like to submit information or suggestions, please send your comments to: Neil Goldman at chgosprtfn@gmail.com or Barbara Chertok at barbchert@gmail.com.
Two Landings couples travelled to Cuba on a trip sponsored by the Sarasota World Affairs Council. Submitted by Ginny Hitchcock
Landings residents Bill Hitchcock, Eric Greenstein, Beverly Smith, and Ginny Hitchcock kept up-to-date on Landings news on the steps of Ernest Hemmingway’s house outside Havana. They were part of the Educational and Cultural Trip to Cuba sponsored by the Sarasota World Affairs Council. Cuba trip coordinator and SWAC board member Jorge Fernandez is at top right. Arriving the week after President Obama’s historic trip to Cuba, the group spent five days exploring the many sites and museums in Havana and eating wonderful Cuban food at restaurants and paladars (restaurants in private homes). “The trip was amazing, and we had a wonderful group, “ recounted Ginny Hitchcock. “If at all possible, you should plan to visit Havana ASAP before Cuba becomes Cancun. There have been Canadian and European tourists to Cuba for some time, but they tend to cluster at the beach resorts. Havana had its share of tourists, but now it is still manageable and not crowded.”

Palms May be Tops with Tourists, but not all Locals Agree
By Robert Frederickson
“I think that I shall never see... A poem as lovely as a tree...” - Joyce Kilmer With all due respect to Mr. Kilmer, some Siesta Key residents might add this caveat to that sentiment: It depends on the tree. Despite generally positive reviews from those attending opening ceremonies earlier this year for the recently completed Siesta Beach improvement project, at least some Key residents have questioned the county’s landscaping choices for the park’s makeover. Of the project’s $21 million budget, $850,000 was spent on trees, shrubs and other landscaping improvements, according to Brad Gaubatz, the county’s point man for the project. “There are 40 royal palms at the main entrance, 12 live oaks in phase one near the maintenance building, 94 green buttonwoods near the playground for shade, 62 sea grapes and 1041 sabal palms in the parking lot,” Gaubatz explained in a phone interview recently. All told, more than 1600 native trees were included in the park’s landscaping plan, as designed by the consulting firm Kimley-Horn and Associates. But some residents have questioned why so many trees were planted in the parking lot and along the new esplanade, blocking views of the project’s focal point: the beach beyond. The issue was raised at a Siesta Key Association meeting in February. In a follow-up e-mail to the SKA after that meeting, later forwarded to the county, Jane McIntire, president of the Beachway Condo Association board of directors, pointed out that prior to the renovation “the only place on Siesta Key where you could drive down the road and see the number one beach was at the main beach parking lot. Thanks to all the improvements, you really can’t see the beach anymore.”
10
But as it turns out, preserving the view of the beach from across the parking area was never an option due to rules that now govern parking lot design and construction. Back in the 1950s when the beach was first developed ordinances and zoning requirements did not mandate the planting of trees to soften the view and provide shade across large expanses of asphalt. Such requirements are in place today explained Gaubatz. It’s similar to the situation now faced a mile or so to the south at the Excelsior Condominiums where repairs planned for the buildings damaged by the tornado that swept through the complex in January must meet today’s stricter building codes, not those in place when the buildings were originally constructed back in 1980. Another issue being raised concerns the choice of so many cabbage palms, also known as sabal palms, for the parking lot. They happen to be the state tree of Florida, but some consider them ‘dirty’ trees, requiring considerable maintenance to look their best. One of the raps against Australian Pines has long been their own status as ‘dirty,’ a reputation earned for the prodigious amount of needles and cones they shed which accumulate beneath their canopies. (Some of the exotic pines were removed from the park for just that very reason as part of the improvement project, though some remain due to public input received in the project’s early planning stages). Some point to the cabbage palms as being equally messy, dropping their dead fronds and seed pods several times each year. But Kimley-Horn project Manager Bill Waddill explained in a recent phone interview that given the choices available, and the tradeoff between shade and
THE LANDINGS EAGLE May 2016
visibility, the cabbage palms were the best alternative. “There is no perfect tree that works in every case,” he said. “The cabbage palm is native to Florida. It is hardy and wellsuited to the winds and salt spray of a coastal environment.” But the final decision was in large measure sealed by Sheriff Department concerns about the same issue of clear sight lines raised by McIntire at that February SKA meeting mentioned earlier. “The Sheriff Department wanted to be able to monitor as much of the parking lot as possible from their new command center and other spots near the beach,” said Waddill. “Oaks or other trees with large canopies would have blocked much more of that view than the palms.” In fact, in order to address Sheriff Department concerns, a variance to the original code had to be adopted by the county to allow for less shade in the lot than would have otherwise been required. The sabal palms adhere to the county’s ‘best practices’ policy for using native species whenever possible, both for the hardiness Waddill points to and their low maintenance requirements. Indeed, sabal palms are often described as ‘self-pruning’ since their dead growth eventually falls to the ground on its own. But their ‘dirty-petticoat’ of yellow and brown fronds can remain hanging in the trees for months before gravity finally prevails. That’s why most private resorts, homeowners and even towns like Fort Myers Beach and Naples routinely cut the dead growth off their palms several times a year, often at considerable expense. So will the county take that approach here or choose to let them go ‘au-naturale?’ Siesta Sand got a mixed response on that score.
Palms in Boyd Park on Siesta Key are maintained by Sarasota County. Is this how the 1041 palms, recently added to the newly renovated #1 beach, will look like in time?
Gaubatz pointed to their selfpruning quality, adding that over-pruning can actually be bad for palms. “It can make the trunks narrow at the top and eventually hurt the tree,” he said. But Siesta Beach is a showcase. After all, that’s why the improvement project was proposed in the first place shortly after Dr. Stephen Leatherman (a.k.a. Dr. Beach) named Siesta the nation’s best beach in 2011. Asked about the aesthetics of up to a thousand ‘dirty-palmfrond petticoats’ swaying in the wind to greet visitors, Gaubatz referred us to Beach Parks Manager George Tatge. He agreed with Gaubatz’s comments about too much pruning, saying, “the healthiest cabbage palm is one not pruned. They lose micro-nutrients if you over cut them.” But he added that the county will have to work out its ongoing maintenance approach over time. “They’re all new and look great now. But the palms in public areas will likely get a higher level of maintenance than those less visible ones tucked away by the dunes.” Another possible concern: disease. By planting so many examples of one tree, an infestation of cabbage palm disease could be devastating to the county’s investment. Many formerly grand canopied
avenues and boulevards in northern cities were left exposed and barren after Dutch Elm Disease wiped out virtually every example of that species starting in the late 1960s. Many municipalities came to regret the decision of earlier city park administration to use Elms almost exclusively along so many public thoroughfares. While not dismissing the possibility of a disease outbreak Waddill said that cabbage palms have done ‘very well’ on Siesta Key. “Am I concerned about a limited palette? Yes. But there’s an issue with almost any tree. Nothing’s perfect. They’re living things.” In any case, the tropical look of all those palms at Siesta Beach is certainly in keeping with the expectations most visitors have for an exotic, tropical playground. According to Gaubatz, they help define the parking lanes and work to focus attention toward the beach even as they work to obscure it for residents across Beach Road. In a bit of irony though, trees now outnumber parking spaces in the lot, despite the need for additional parking spaces being cited early and often as perhaps the most important improvement needed for the park. The final tally on that score? 140 new parking spots for a total of 980. Number of new cabbage palms: 1041.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE May 2016
By Kevin Lechlitner
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the members for a wonderful season. The first four months went by in a flash as they always do. The variety and quantity of activities continues to impress me each year. For those of you leaving town, I wish you a safe trip back and a wonderful summer in your northern homes. I look forward to seeing you again when you return later in the year. Beginning May 15 the Guest Fee enters its summertime rate. Guests of members using the pool, Fitness Center or tennis courts will be charged a $5 fee per person, per day regardless of what time they start. This rate will continue until October 15 when the fee returns to $10 during prime time. Guests residing under a member’s roof (In-house Guests) will not be charged a fee as long as the member has registered their guests in advance with the Tennis Pro Shop. Beginning May 1 we are going to try something new to help with the morning court reservations. If you want to schedule an 8:00 a.m. court, you can call the Pro Shop at 7:40 a.m. If you want to schedule a 9:30 a.m. court, you can begin calling at 7:50 a.m. This should free up some space on the phone lines so members won’t hear a busy signal as often. As a reminder, it is still two days in advance for doubles and one day in advance for singles. Also on May 1 our “Peak Time” policy comes to an end. Now reservations can be made two days in advance for
prime time courts (8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) as long as there aren’t more guests on the court than members. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about our court reservation policies. As we have done for many years now, the Landings Racquet Club will offer a summer membership to those living in The Landings who aren’t already members. For a one-time $400 fee, during the months of June through September, your family will have full privileges throughout the facility. You will have access to the tennis courts, Fitness Center, our wonderful pool that is cooled to 84 degrees, use of the well-stocked lending library as well as member rates on tennis lessons with our USPTA Certified Professional Joe Venezia. If you have any questions or would like to take advantage of the summer membership, feel free to contact me in the Tennis Pro Shop. Be sure to mark your calendars for the annual LRC Memorial Day BBQ. Every year, this event has had the largest attendance of any of our social activities all year. This year’s BBQ is scheduled on Monday, May 30 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Lakeside Clubhouse. We will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs with all the side dishes. Please sign-up in the Tennis Pro Shop by Friday, May 27 if you plan to join us. The cost is $10.00 per person. Members who are Wartime Military Veterans are the guests of honor and may attend at no charge.

|President’s Report By Dick Bayles April was a busy month for the Club. Landings day was a huge success; Landings all all of the tennis “games” were fully subscribed subscribed and a total of 80+ members and and guests enjoyed the dinner. That same same weekend, the US team won the annual annual CANUKUS match. The mixed doubles competition, comprising comprising eight teams, had its finale on on Friday the 9th. It was followed by a lunch and a planning session for next year’s schedule. My thanks to Pieter Heijens and Joe Venezia for their work in organizing the event. The maintenance shed work has been completed, with cleaning up the landscaping as the last component. We will be replacing the Lakeside Room roof sometime in June and, as the final major project for this year, putting in new drains for the courts and cleaning up the landscaping on the main walkway to the courts. This will complete our multi-year program to restore the courts to an as-new condition. We’ll be making one change in the court reservation process beginning on May 1. To reduce the number of busy signals received when making the required telephone reservation, we are separating the call-in times for the 8:00-9:30 period from the 9:30 to 11:00 period. The time for calling for an 8:00 court time will be 7:40AM and for a 9:30 court time, 7:50AM, both two days in advance. This will begin for court reservations for Sunday, May 1 onward. For those of you leaving in May for northern climes, have an enjoyable season, and I look forward to seeing you later this year.

Another great turnout for the 9th Annual Landings Day Olympics. The Annual temperature was a bit on the warm side temperature which made it very refreshing going which in the dunk tank. Congratulations to in everyone everyone who sent me into the water - I was dunked quite a few times. Thanks to Kevin, John, Tina and Gabriel Von Kessel, Gary and Teagan Bowen, Tucker Lang, Bella Winter and Alice for helping out on the courts and to Judy and Tara for providing the refreshments. Thanks to Bob for taking photos and a big thanks to Edvin and Hans for getting the courts in shape before and after the event. The first season of The Landings Interclub League was a success. There were eight mixed doubles teams competing in the league. We ended with a luncheon and discussed ways to make the league bigger and better. In May, plans are to have a “one and done” tournament. Check in the Pro Shop for details. In October/November 2016 we will initiate The Landings Cup League. Plans are to play the matches on Saturdays and Sundays. More details to follow. With season winding down, John and I have a few openings for lessons/clinics. Contact me at 941-993-2628 or lrctennisdirector@Verizon.net to schedule a time. Once again, for those folks heading north, have a safe trip and a great summer. For the folks staying in the area, I’ll see you on the courts...

Newcomers Reception
Annually, the Landings Management Association (LMA) and the Landings Racquet Club (LRC) host a reception for new residents who have arrived in The Landings in the past year. This year the event was held at the LRC on April 3. The purpose is to introduce newcomers to the LMA and LRC, meet and greet each other and the representatives of the two organizations. Approximately 60 people attended and the socializing was most gratifying. Given the ongoing interaction and level of conversation, all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the event. An informal

Photos by Bob Manteiga book club was even being considered. Kevin Lechlitner, General Manager of LRC, and Larry Lawrence, President of LMA, gave brief overviews of their organizations. Mika Palomaa catered a fine array of hors d’oeuvers with scrumptious bar-b-que as the main course. Delightful background music was provided by Ron Kushner. LMA and LRC thank Dawn Smith for her most capable organization and Nelson Smith and Henry Rhodes for their serving of beverages. The reception for next year is already being planned!!

The Landings Photo Gallery By Robert C. Manteiga (AKA Photos by Beto) On Thursday, March 24, The Landings Free College of Florida featured a presentation of the work of five Landings’ photographers, Rudy Blohm, Norris Carroll, Jeff Crotty, Bob Manteiga, and Gary Warren. The audience was treated to five video presentations, each with its own musical accompaniment. For those who missed this wonderful show, this month’s Photo Gallery is offering you a sampling of their work. I asked each photographer to submit one photograph that reflects his photographic interests and
that he considers one of his best shots. I realize that this is an unreasonable request. It’s like asking someone “what’s your favorite movie or favorite song of all time?” There are so many from which to choose. I also thought it might be fun to present these five photos without revealing who the photographer is, and let the readers try to guess. Now, those of you who know us, or some of us, probably have an unfair advantage. But, then again, preconceived notions are often quite deceptive.
Send your guesses to me at roberto@uri.edu, and we’ll publish the names of the winners in next month’s Eagle. One other thought came to mind while I was writing this piece: none of the photographers here are women. I’m sure there are a number of female residents in The Landings that enjoy photography and dedicate a good deal of time to this hobby. We are always looking for volunteers to photograph upcoming events. Please send your best photos to me at roberto@uri.edu.

Donate to Keep Fireworks on Siesta Key In 2015, we celebrated the 25th year of having fireworks on Siesta Key for the 4th of July. According to Mike Simmons, Project Manager at Zambelli Fireworks, this display was the largest private show in Sarasota County and one of the largest in the state of Florida. Because all funding for the annual fireworks comes completely from sponsorships/ donations, the group of volunteers that serve on the fireworks committee took on a challenge when we agreed to raise extra funds to beef-up the show from prior years. We saw the value in working a bit harder because 25 years of fireworks made possible solely by the generosity of local businesses and residents is truly something to be proud of and to celebrate. We were also starting to see a change in the atmosphere at the public beach and with the additional challenges that were put in the path of producing the VIP party. We knew that the model we
20
THE LANDINGS EAGLE May 2016
had used for so many years would have to change moving forward. For those who do not know, we’ve always held a VIP party on the 4th of July and the donations and ticket sales for that party directly funded the fireworks and costs associated with putting on the community event. When we first started using this model, there was an old ball field that we used for parking for those who purchased tickets for the party. Fast forward to 2016, the ball field is no longer there and the beach renovation project has been completed. What does this mean to the fireworks committee? Well, we no longer have 250 parking spots to offer the VIP party ticket holders and we would have to raise an additional $8,000 just to have the party. We realized it just didn’t make financial sense anymore so we made the decision to eliminate the party. Aside from the convenience of having the fireworks on the island for the residents,
why is it important to donate to keep them here? In one word: Tourism. Being in the accommodations business, I can tell you if the fireworks did not happen on Siesta, there would be a lot of upset and disappointed guests which would be devastating to the area. The fireworks are extremely important to the people staying in our resorts - they shop, eat out, rent boats, etc. We need the people, we need the fireworks. You can help. We are counting on community groups, local businesses and residents to keep our fireworks show the best in the county! Let’s show off our newly renovated #1 beach!!! Partnerships and sponsorships are available. Please contact the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce for more information (941) 349.3800. Combine butter, onion, and poppy seeds. Drizzle over bread. Wrap the loaf of bread in foil and place on a baking sheet. Bake at 350*F for 15 minutes. Unwrap the bread and bake 10 more minutes, or until cheese is melted. Serves 8 to 10.
Pizza Burn
From time to time we see patients with mouth discomfort caused by eating and/or foods. We see burns, lacerations, scrapes and swellings which can interfere with eating, swallowing and talking. They can even break teeth and fillings/crowns, etc. Usually these discomforts are diagnosed with examination and a careful history. The things we consume can be too cold or hot, too sharp and poky, or too hard. Very occasionally they can be allergenic. The top three offenders are ‘Pizza Burn’ (also from hot liquids), ‘Triscuit Trauma’ and ‘Chewing Gum’ crowns. The big healers here are ‘tincture of time’ or repair the broken, loose or fractured area. Any injury lasting more than two weeks needs immediate observation. Avoid pizza burn? Cut up the first few bites until it’s cool enough to chow down. Almost all of these problems are preventable and avoidable. It’s up to you!

Francis & Dr. Jessie Hoang Enrollment was about 2000, and Francis was well known on campus for running a weekly poker party every Friday night at his apartment. Med school classes were extremely intense, and a friendly game of Texas Hold’em was a great way to let off steam. Both guys and girls could play, so it was also the perfect way for students to get to know each other. The game made for a nice, social escape, and only cost $7.50 to play so it was more about having fun than making money. Francis was born in Saigon, in South Vietnam, now known as Ho Chi Minh City. The year was 1970, and his dad was a math professor who became a military liaison between U.S. Forces and the South Vietnamese Army. The fall of South Vietnam came in 1975 when Francis was only five. Bombs were going off as his father miraculously piled his wife and five kids o n t o a t i n y m o p e d a n d somehow managed to drive to the dock where GI’s were helping people evacuate.
Francis remembers his father saying to his mother, who was holding an infant in her arms: “Don’t let go!” It was a terrifying scene. Aboard nearby ships, helicopters were being shoved off the deck to make room for more refugees to land. Francis says: “The GI’s were awesome! My uncle was a commander of a vessel that had been given to the Vietnamese navy from the U.S. We were able to board that boat. The seamen cleared out a milk crate box, and that became my little sister’s first bassinette.” The family had survived! They were first taken to Guam, and then to Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California. They were later moved to Indiana, then Utah, and ultimately back to California where they settled in San Jose. Says Francis: “Although my Dad had been a professor in Saigon, once he became an immigrant here, he was not certified in anything.” His father took a job at a convenience store, went to night school, and
Continued from cover story
became an accountant. Francis was captain of his tennis team in high school. After San Jose State University, he went to the University Of San Francisco School Of Law and practiced law for ten years. He then left that field to teach disadvantaged kids in a California Middle School. It was a rough two years! He then decided to become a pediatrician. Since the number of people applying for positions at American medical schools greatly exceeds the number of positions available, Francis found St. George’s in Grenada to be an excellent alternative. B o r n a n d r a i s e d i n Orlando, Jessie laughs: “I had no other option but to become a doctor.” Her father, you see, is an allergist, and he had definite plans for his gifted daughter. As an undergraduate, she attended Cornell University where she majored in Medieval History and minored in Microbiology. Although she had not yet met her future poker-playing husband, Jessie came to
the same choice of medical schools. She enrolled at St. George’s and met Francis at one of his poker games. They lived in NYC for a year, doing clinical work at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn. Francis trained in pediatrics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore for a year-anda-half. When their first child, Aria, was born, the couple d e c i d e d F r a n c i s w o u l d become a Stay-At-Home Dad and Jessie would complete her pediatric residency at the University of Maryland. The two little girls have been gifted with wonderful parents! Both Jessie and Francis pour love into raising their children, and take their parenting seriously. They s e l e c t e d t h e i r L a n d i n g s home because it had a huge enclosed lanai in full view of the kitchen, dining and living room. This room has become the playroom, stuffed with a collection of toys and games to challenge the minds of Aria and Hanh, a room where the kids are always in sight. The family loves living
at The Landings. “People here are wonderful,” says Francis. “What drew us here is the location. What keeps us here are the people. We actually feel safe. There is a playground two blocks away, and a pool two blocks away.” And— when the girls are bigger— I wager tennis will be added. Francis is considering one more career change. He would like to return to teaching when his children are a little older. He is fascinated by kids and has so much to share with them. As a teacher, he would also be able to follow his daughters and be there for them when school is over. We said our goodbyes. As Jessie took me to the door, she let their Schnauzer out of the garage. (The dog is known to get too excited when guests are present.) Grey raced happily past me and up the stairs to be reunited with her family. The pup is a joyous tail-wagger, a definite addition to this delightful family.

Landings Gazebo Fishing Record
By Karl Maggard

Just roll out of bed...your hair looks great! Shampoo and towel dry.... and you’re done! The style is in the cut, not the blowdry, so you don’t have to fuss with your hair to look good... even with fine, limp hair... and my new steam color process creates richer brunettes and spectacular blondes. The colors go deeper and last longer, yet are far more gentle to the hair. By Appointment Only with Ian:

Bob Mantiega and I participated in what we are declaring as a new “World’s (at least Landings) Record”. We had five grandchildren and six poles fishing off the gazebo. As I told the kids: “that’s why we call it fishing and not catching!”

Passing the Baton In January, Abel’s Ice Cream store founders Bill and Norma Abel retired after nearly five years in business and passed the ownership baton to Jerry and Jill Williams to carry on the legacy of award-winning tastes and superb customer service. Throughout the past months, the Williams have had multiple conversations with longtime customers about Bill and Norma, which prompted them to create a memory board (pictured), where a note of well wishes could be jotted for the Abels. When they were presented with the framed piece, both Norma and Bill were deeply moved. “Norma and I would like to express our sincere appreciation for the very touching gift from you and the customers,” Bill said. “It will be treasured for the balance of our lives.” Jerry and Jill hail from the Midwest, and are now permanent Sarasota residents. The couple have thoroughly enjoyed their welcome to the community and the wonderful legacy that Bill and Norma created.
“Bill and Norma are such wonderful people, and they really teed it up for us,” Jerry said. “From the ice cream, fine chocolates, and gourmet food, to the cleanliness and service, we couldn’t have created a better business model. We hope the only change the customers notice is a couple of faces. We feel blessed to have this opportunity.” Abel’s Ice Cream new owners, Jerry and Jill Speaking of wonderful Williams, presented the store’s founders, people, Mother’s Day is just Bill and Norma Abel, with a framed photo around the corner!
