The Landings Racquet Club is proud to be the host facility for the 26th consecutive year of the USTA National Senior, Super Senior & Ultra Senior Father/Son Clay Court Championships. This year’s tournaments will be held from November 13th through November 18th. These are the clay court national championships for all three divisions. Although there are three other surfaces where national championships are held each year, this is the largest by far. Last year players traveled from 25 different states to compete for the coveted gold ball. Although the entries don’t close until the end of October, there are a few interesting storylines I should mention. For the first time, Landings resident Richard Stern will be playing with his son Jeff in the Super

Senior (70s) division. Former Landings resident Dean Dancer, (he moved out earlier this year), will be playing with his father Douglas in the Super Senior division as well. The Dancers have been regulars at the Father/Son for the last 5 years. I’ve had a verbal confirmation that Ultra Senior (80s) Champions Alan & James Goldman will be back to defend their title. Sadly, the reigning Super Senior (70s) Champions Michael & Andrew Stewart won’t be back due to a recent knee replacement. Hopefully we will see them again next year. Even though I haven’t spoken with them yet, I’m confident that Jerry and Brett Morse-Karzen will return to The Landings if they are both healthy. They have won the Senior (60s) division the last five years in a row. The Morse-

Karzens have been the number one ranked team in the country the last five years ever since they entered the Senior division. They are an intimidating team to play against as Jerry is 6’5” and his son Brett is 6’10”. Normally we have a majority of the top ranked teams in the country participate in all three divisions. Some of the fathers and sons have tour experience or have played division 1 college tennis. In 2015 Robbie Ginepri even played with his dad. That was the same year that he officially retired from the ATP Tour. He made it as high as #15 in the world rankings. It is a great week of tennis. Feel free to come out and enjoy the tennis. The events are free for spectators. See USTA history on page 25

As has been indicated in letters to the Landings Management Association, the board believes the Siesta Promenade development would have a dramatic adverse effect on the Safety and Quality of Life of all residents in the area of the Rt 41 and Stickney Point intersection. Consequently in early October all members were urged to promptly sign a petition in opposition to the project and to express their views to the County Commissioners. An impressive number of residents took action although there is still ample opportunity to weigh-in for those that may have had other priorities earlier. The importance for the Commissioners to have an emphatic impression of where you stand cannot be over stated. The question frequently asked, “is this a done deal”? The Commissioners have clear authority to dramatically modify the proposed project and this is a distinct possibility if an overwhelming demonstration of concern is registered by the area residents.

The hearing dates are as follows:

• The Planning Commission, November 15 at 5 pm; • The Sarasota County Commission (the decision-making body) December 12 at 9 am, continuing at 1 pm. • Both hearings are to be held at the Sarasota County Offices at 1660 Ringling Blvd.

Plan to attend the hearings and wear blue to be identified. The Commissioners can be influenced by the commitment and perseverance of their constituents! Also a demonstration is being planned by the coalition of communities against the project on November 12 at 5:30 pm. Formation will occur at the Sarasota Pavilion Shopping Plaza (in the empty area in the middle of the parking lot between Stein Mart and Pet Smart) and proceeding across Rt. 41 to the sidewalk at Rt. 41 and Stickney Point. Ideas being advanced for the signs include the following, but participants are urged to be creative.

The word density with over it No mo cars! No cars thru Pine Shores! Greed isn’t Good! More gridlock less beach time! Siesta Beach, out of reach Save our quality of life Please mark your calendars for these important dates and plan to participate. Collectively we can have a significant impact!

THE LANDINGS EAGLE November 2018

LMA Meeting Notes Treasurer, Dick Bayles led the meeting in LMA Pres. Deirdre D’Silva’s absence and began the meeting by sharing her president’s report. He reported The Landings coastal cleanup was a success involving over 30 residents and others provided by John Ryan, the Environmental Manager of the Sarasota County Public Utilities Department. He thanked Doug Day, Paul Weiner, and Bill Whitman for their important contributions. Ryan and Nate Brennan from Mote Marine will be leading a talk and kayaking event around The Landings. Watch for details. Contact D’Silva if you would be interested in participating in fun events celebrating wildlife. The Landings’ Green Team is looking to expand. Mike Knupp has agreed to temporarily chair the Safety and Security committee until a permanent chairman can be identified. Bayles thanked Kathy Stern for her service as chair. Larry Lawrence and Henry Rhodes are looking for residents who would like to be a part of the Nominating Committee or are interested in running to be on the LMA Board. The committee meets only a few times speaking to potential candidates and making recommendations to the Board.

FINANCE REPORT

Treasurer, Dick Bayles reported the year to date operations forecast is currently over budget, but expects to be slightly under budget by the end of the year. The 2019 budget currently shows an increase of $62 to the single unit assessment. An increase of $15 is from increased operating costs and $48 is from increased reserve allocations for the Lakes and Drainage accounts. A comprehensive review and several recent failures of The Landings drainage system resulted in a substantial increase in the drainage reserve allocation. Unexpected drainage system failures have occurred at about one per month over the last four months.

By Trebor Britt

Additionally, action will need to be taken regarding erosion issues on several lakes. The budget will be printed in the next issue of The Landings Eagle and will be voted on at the next meeting. After several discussions and letters, three Benderson receivables remain unpaid and will be turned over to the LMA attorney for collection.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Chairman Doug Day, announced the Halloween Trail is expanding to Pine Harrier Circle this year. In addition, a few golf cart shuttles will be provided.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS SIESTA PROMENADE

Larry Lawrence briefly summarized a television interview with a Benderson official and related that Benderson is soliciting their own petition to garner support for their project. Lawrence went on to urge residents to sign the petition expressing concern about the project as well as write a letter of concern to Sarasota County Commissioners. Three events residents can attend include a demonstration on November 15, a Planning Commission hearing on November 18 and the County Commission hearing on December 12. Details of all these events appeared on page 9 of the October issue of The Eagle.

LANDINGS SHOPPING CENTER

Lawrence reported progress continuing at a good pace.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Treasurer, Dick Bayles shared the committee report in temporary Chairman Michael Knupp‘s absence. A second resident speeding violation for going 11 mph over the speed limit was presented for board action. Continued on page 6

Letter to the Editor I read your article on The Landings resident Planned Parenthood volunteer that appeared in The Eagle. This piece was as much an ad for Planned Parenthood as it was a feature about the volunteer (right down to providing contact info for donating and volunteering at Planned Parenthood, as well as commentary denigrating the opposition). It’s clear from reading the article that you favor “a woman’s right to choose” abortion. However, you should be aware that this is arguably the most divisive issue in our country today (witness the recent Supreme Court nomination hearings fiasco). I assure you there are many, many citizens in our country who believe quite passionately that an unborn child’s right to life overrides a woman’s “control over her body.” I’ve been reading and enjoying The Eagle for several years. I always had the impression your publication focused on matters of interest that everyone in our community can embrace, regardless of political persuasion or religious beliefs. Your worthy series on Landings veterans

like my father is a prime example. But this article reads more like an oped in support of Planned Parenthood and abortion rights, while at the same time casting aspersions on those who take an opposing view. I am familiar with the distinct editorial philosophies of publications like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. What exactly is the editorial philosophy of The Eagle? Submitted by Dave Owen Publisher’s Note: Although “The Eagle” reserves the right to edit or reject copy we believe to be abusive, vague, or incomprehensible, it is our policy not to take a stance on national issues. We work closely with the Landings Editorial Committee on articles submitted by homeowners and are happy to publish a “Letter to the Editor” for residents wishing to express their thoughts on any article printed in this paper. “The Eagle” receives contact information from the point person handling The Landings Volunteer series on the Editorial Committee and provides contextual content, from each volunteer, based on a consistent set of questions for the interviewee.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE November 2018

President’s Column Veteran’s Days- November 11, 2018 As we celebrate this Veteran’s Day, let us pause to reflect on the sacrifices that the brave men and women who have served in our nation’s military have made on our behalf. We are blessed to have 63 veterans living in our community. I would like to say a special thank you to our Landings Veterans for all they have done, and the sacrifices they have made for our country. Welcome Back! It’s great to see more friends and neighbors returning from up north. As we move into the busier season, keep an eye out for upcoming opportunities to gather with your neighbors to celebrate the beauty of our community. Sarasota Audubon will be coming to The Landings to give a guided bird walk and we will be offering a kayaking opportunity. As we learned from the Coastal Cleanup, it is very rewarding to come together to enjoy all The Landings has to offer. Siesta Promenade Larry Lawrence LMA External Affairs Chair has worked hard to keep our community informed about the

Siesta Promenade project. In September, the Board voted to oppose the project. If you agree, I encourage you to sign the petition, send a letter to the County Commission, and attend the upcoming protest and hearings. Annual Assessment After a comprehensive review by the Finance Committee, it was determined that there will be an increase in the annual assessment by $62. This increase is necessary in order to cover the constant drainage and erosion repairs required to maintain our community. I asked Mike Knupp, LMA Chair of Lakes and Drainage to give an overview of the most recent issues we are encountering with our aging drainage system. “This past month we have seen four problems with our aging drainage infrastructure. A broken pipe on Kestral Park Lane caused a driveway to partially collapse. Repairs were made to the pipe and the driveway. The settling of a street drain on Landings Lane has caused water to back up in the line and flood the street. A contract has been issued for that repair. The outflow control gate is being replaced on Carriagehouse Lake (Lake

3) to allow us to better control the lake level during heavy rain or ahead of a potential hurricane where we might need to lower the water level. We did that last year ahead of Irma. We have discovered a major problem in the intake pipe to Lake 1 at the North gate where there is caution tape. A large sinkhole has developed as a result of a crack in the pipe causing water to erode the bank next to the pipe. County engineers have reviewed the problem and have issued a work order to make the needed repairs at the County’s expense. Had this been a Landings expense, we would have needed $40,000 to $50,000 from our reserves. The County will not be able make a repair to this pipe for several months. We are also trying to address street flooding on Pine Harrier Circle and Peregrine Point Lane where swales are unable to carry water to the central drainage systems because the driveways are higher than the swales and are acting like dams. The solution is to re-contour the swales and install six-inch pipes under the driveways. We did this a few years ago on the east side of Peregrine Point Lane where the cost was shared between the Landings

Management Association, the Landings Homeowners Association and the residents of the street. As you can see, our drainage system and our lakes are starting to show their age and will need more attention and funding in the future.” While the aquatic plants we will be planting and buffers that are growing will help to slow future erosion, and filter out pollutants, they will not fix the erosion that has already occurred. LMA Board Election Are you interested in being more involved in the community? The LMA Nominating Committee is looking for residents who are interested in running for the LMA Board. Please contact Henry Rhodes or Larry Lawrence if you are interested or have any questions. Halloween Trail Thank you to Doug Day, LMA Community Events Chair, his wife Veronica and George Michalopoulos for their work in coordinating another successful Halloween Trail in The Landings. Fun was had by all!

LMA Meeting Notes

LHA Meeting Notes At its regular October meeting, the Board heard details of drainage problems on Pine Harrier Circle and Landings Way. The Pine Harrier Circle situation will be discussed with the owners when correction costs are known. The Landings Way problem arose from a faulty storm sewer connection that will be repaired by the LMA. After a review of the property survey, the board did not approve the addition of a garage for a residence on Peregrine Point Way as it would have substantially encroached on the minimum setbacks required by the LHA’s Declaration of Restrictions as Amended. In other actions, the Board approved: • Installation of solar panels at Landings Boulevard • A fence on Pine Harrier Circle • Exterior paint colors on Pine Harrier Circle • The removal of a hazardous tree on Peregrine Point Court • Replacement of a garage door on Pine Harrier Circle • Replacement of windows on Flicker Field Circle • Landscaping changes on Pine Harrier Drive. The board also gave conceptual approval of a garage conversion and addition for a residence on Landings Boulevard, subject to review of construction drawings and

approval of exterior colors. A preliminary budget was reviewed that set the 2019 Annual Assessment at $200.00, unchanged from 2018, and completing the restoration of the Association’s financial condition after unusual hurricane Irma debris removal costs. At a September 26, 2018, special board meeting, the Association approved a site plan for new construction at 1574 Landings Terrace (Lot 163) subject to the residence being rotated 8.90 clockwise (viewed from above) on the property. The next regular meeting of the LHA Board will take place on November 8, 2018, at The Landings Racquet Club at 7:00 pm. The 2019 Budget will be approved at that meeting. The Association’s Annual Meeting is on February 14, 2019. There will be three directors elected at that meeting. Any member interested in standing for election to a seat on the Association’s Board of Directors should indicate their interest to Dick Bayles, 1729 Landings Way, or rubayles@ hotmail.com. A candidate should also provide material that will be sent to the membership as a part of the election package for voters’ consideration. The three incumbents will stand for reelection.

A motion was made and seconded to forward the incident to the Fining Committee for their consideration. After about 25 minutes of discussion among Board members and residents, the motion was withdrawn. During the discussion, a resident proposed the policy be reconsidered after interested residents meet and discuss their concerns with a few board members.

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping chair, Paul Weiner provided the board with a detailed report and estimates of removing dead and suffering foliage with the names of plants he recommends, and the cost of replacement. Estimate total was $9,385.

DRAINAGE AND LAKES

Committee chair, Michael Knupp reported over the past year, we have encountered several drainage pipe failures in the system. While none are catastrophic, we will continue to see the cost of repairs and replacement going up as the system ages. Because we live where stormwater management is critical to prevent flooding on our properties, we have an obligation to keep things working. We know there are several areas in the community that need attention and are budgeting to address the most critical problem areas and financially plan for emergencies when they arise. The Sarasota Youth Orchestras has been hailed as one of the most exemplary youth programs in the Southeast. The philosophy, underlying the program, is to involve all interested children from third grade through high school in classical and symphonic music, both as audience members and musicians. To ensure all students have access to music instruction and our programs, the Sarasota Orchestra provides tuition, private lesson, summer camp and college scholarships. During their 30-week season, eight different orchestras rehearse weekly and play concerts publicly. Students can expand their skills, increase musical knowledge, develop a strong team spirit and most of all have fun with other youth.

Planting Native Species Can Help Combat Red Tide Red tide is an increasingly pressing issue on our coast. However, there is a surprising solution to this epidemic: plants. Specifically, native plants. Red tide is fueled by storm-water runoff and fertilizer. Non-native plants require much more fertilizer and water than native plants. They cost millions of dollars in maintenance per year by crowding waterways, destroying forests, and even posing direct threats to human health. Hydrilla, for instance, is an invasive aquatic plant species that forms thick mats under water that has entangled and drowned swimmers. Another example is the Brazilian pepper, an invasive tree species that viciously spreads, forces out native trees and causes skin irritation to those who come in contact with it. In contrast, native plants not only mitigate the impacts of red tide by requiring less maintenance, but they also attract more birds, bees, and butterflies such as our state butterfly, the Zebra Longwing. Native trees such as live oak, magnolia, and Carolina willows are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also lend to the Florida “look” that can only be achieved through native flora. A variety of native plants also help to filter storm water and clean our waterways. So, next time you have a choice between a non-native and native plant for your landscaping needs, do yourself and your environment a favor and choose native plants for your lawns, gardens and ponds to save yourself from a world of red tide and other environmental issues. How Many Children in The Sarasota Area Will Not Receive Holiday Gifts? Last year, through the generous support of The Landings community and friends, our HOLIDAY CHEER PROGRAM FOR KIDS FIGHTING CANCER provided gifts to 93 children! We expect an even greater number of children and their siblings will need to be adopted in this 5th year of our program. If the concept of helping children speaks to your heart, then join us to learn more on November 8th at 5:00 pm at the Racquet Club for our kick-off party! You’ll meet like-minded folks and learn about the different organizations we support while enjoying your neighbors. We are excited to include some special guests to our event. Musicians from the Sarasota Youth Orchestra will perform musical selections during the event, and you will be greeted by members of the Pine View School orchestra as you arrive. The children-in-need create a wish list that is provided to us from each of the organizations we support. A child or children are “adopted” and the gifts are purchased. If you are unable to do the shopping, we have elves that LOVE to shop and are glad to help! The gifts are wrapped and dropped off at the club to be picked up by the organizations to be distributed to the children as requested by the parents. For those who will not be in town during December or for any other reason are unable to adopt a child or family, a tax-deductible check payable to: Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation, Inc. will go a long way toward purchasing gifts. Please leave your contribution in an envelope addressed to Henry Rhodes and leave it at the Landings Racquet Club. Please put it on your calendar to attend the November 8th Kick-Off event this year! We look forward to sharing more details of our program with you. A reminder that the USTA National Father/Son [Senior, Super Senior & Ultra] Championships will begin on Tuesday, November 13th, and end on Sunday the 18th. This year, two Landings-affiliated teams will be playing – the Sterns and the Dancers. With past champions returning, I am sure this will be another in a line of successful National championships hosted at your club. The notice of the Club’s Annual Assessment will be sent in November and will be due on or before January 1, 2019. The increase in this year’s assessment to $1,485, the first in eight years, begins to fund a multi-year plan of maintenance efforts required to keep our over three-decades-old infrastructure in acceptable condition. At its October board meeting, John Fournier was elected to the seat formerly held by Pieter Heijens, who left The Landings in October. As a former teaching pro and owner of a health and fitness club, he brings unique to our management team. He has been active as the Captain of our CANUKUS team and a host to Father/Son teams. Tennis players may have noted the replacement of the court bench bases. The older iron bases, installed about five years ago, began to rust away this year, as anticipated. We decided to invest in custom-made powder-coated aluminum bases that should last fifteen years or longer. About 40% more costly but with at least three times the life expectancy. The seats themselves were reused as they should easily last as long as the new bases. Be sure to make your reservations for the annual Holiday Party, set for Sunday, December 2nd.

For our seasonal residents who spend their summers away from Sarasota, welcome back! Now that November is here, the activity level around the Club is starting to pick back up. The women’s tennis leagues have already started and the men will begin the first week of November. All or our exercise classes are already going or are about to begin. There is a new Stretch Class beginning Friday, November 9th at 10:00 am with Debbie Leslie. If you are interested or curious about the class, please email Debbie at debbieleslieFL@gmail.com. Please check the calendar in the back of The Eagle for the complete schedule. Also, the new session of our Watercolor Painting class started October 18th. It is led by Susan Martinolich and is on Thursdays at 10:00 am. For more information about any of the activities at the Club, please contact the Tennis Pro Shop at 923-3886. Beginning November 1st the Peak Time rule goes back into effect. It states that if you have a guest in your group at 9:30 am you can only reserve the court one day in advance. Also, from November 1st through April 30th, the guest fee for tennis is now $10 all day regardless of what time your match begins. The fee for non-members using the facilities for exercise classes, card games and other social activities is still $3 per time. Please see me in the Tennis Pro Shop if you have any questions about the Club’s guest policy. The Annual Holiday Dinner Dance is scheduled for Sunday, December 2nd at 6:00 pm. For the 5th year in a row, Sammy J will provide the musical entertainment. He really puts on a good show. Chef James Riegel from Black Tie Catering will be back for the 8th consecutive year. He always does a fantastic job catering the food. Jill Eisner and her committee have selected a great menu for the event. It should be another spectacular year-end party that you don’t want to miss. The event registration sheet will be in the Pro Shop by November 1st. Seating is limited so be sure to sign up early.

I want to thank all the members who came to see Dave and me playing in the USTA National 50s Doubles Championships at Bath and Racquet Club. It was great to have your support and encouragement during the matches. At the higher levels of tennis it comes down to being able to hold your serve consistently, returning effectively to neutralize the server and the quality of your team’s second shot. So for example when you’re serving, your serve should give you at least a neutral volley so that you have a chance to control the point. However, if you receive a ball that makes you hit a defensive volley because your serve wasn’t effective enough, then it’s tough to hold serve against the best teams. And that is exactly what happened to us as we got to play the best teams in the tournament. Those teams were better at holding serve and breaking our serves at crucial times. We were able to problem solve effectively against all the competition except the top 2 seeded teams. Their experience and confidence got them through all the important points. In the end we placed 4th out of 30 teams. It was a great experience and I’m so glad to have had the chance to compete again after all these years teaching. When you come watch the Father and Son Tournament at our beautiful facility November 13 - 18, notice that all the top teams are able to hold serve and return very effectively. Doubles points in general are very short and your teams first and second shot determines whether you will be in control of the point and if you have an opportunity for a finishing shot (like a high volley, overhead or an easy short ball). It’s going to be exciting again to watch the competition on our home courts. See you on the courts!

The Landings First Annual Coastal Cleanup A big crew of friendly people showed up to clean up The Landings on September 15, 2018. It was a beautiful day and delightfully cool with no signs of red tide at all. Deirdre and Doug got everybody organized when they gathered at the Racquet Club. Gloves, bags and tee shirts were handed out while everyone shared coffee and munchies. Then it was off to the cleanup. It was such a fun time connecting with neighbors. It was a great group who had real enthusiasm. It was fun to see all the kids there. It took a little while for them to get with the plan but then they got competitive to see who could find the most trash. They got down and dirty out in the mangroves and found some old stuff – remember cans with pull tabs? Could it be that those cans have been out there since the 1970s?

One of the weirdest things was an iron. Maybe somebody got fed up with ironing – pretty understandable! There were pretty things to see too. Hundreds of fiddler crabs were clustered along the trails. Fish were rising in the lagoons among the mangroves. Little stinger-free comb jellies went floating by. It turns out that having the golf cart made it more fun and a little bit easier to shuttle the bags around. The Landings is a little bit prettier today and healthier for the wildlife who share this little piece of paradise with us. Can’t wait for next year! The Queen of Halloween

By Debbie Flessner

Landings resident Diane Hurter is not a scary person. She is a lovely woman, with an adorable dog named Oliver and a beautiful home on Flicker Field Circle. During the month of October, however, her house becomes a frightful sight, with ghosts, ghouls and creepy crawlies, both inside and out. And she loves it. Diane says that she first started really decorating for Halloween about 20 years ago. “The first year I did it, the stores were just selling small things,” she said. “I would do it just for my family. But as items started getting bigger, I kept adding to what I was doing.” Seven years ago, her grandson Elias was born on October 31. That’s when she decided to ramp up her decorations and make the day a big combination birthday/Halloween celebration. In The Landings, residents have trick or treating on the Saturday prior to Halloween, so for the past four years, Diane has opened up her home to the neighborhood, and it’s a popular stop. She’s never stopped adding to her collection and the spooky décor occupies every square inch of the house. Diane begins decorating for the holiday about seven weeks ahead of time, but says that she’s constantly tweaking and moving things around. Her husband of 30 years, with whom she owns Bradenton’s Carpet Depot, never knows what to expect. “Bud comes home from work every day and asks what’s new here,” she said. “I was an optician for Lens Crafters and I’m retired now, so it gives me a project.” Many of the decorations use either motion or sound sensors to begin moving or making noises. As Diane walks around her home, she claps and the room wakes up with the sights and sounds of Halloween. During the big night, this year on October 27, she will have helpers stationed throughout the house to ensure everyone is able to fully enjoy all the special effects. Realizing that younger children may be frightened by some of the gorier figures, she allows them to come in a little earlier and just take a walk through without activating any of the sounds. “I will give them a bag and we go find candy together,” she said. “I don’t turn on anything.” Diane said that the first year she opened up her Halloween home to the public, she had about 300 visitors walk through. But due to a strong social media presence the past couple of years, that number has substantially grown. She also used to have all her decorations out on the lawn or in her garage, but would find herself chasing big inflatables down the street when they came loose in winds. The decision to bring almost everything inside and expand the decorations was easy. Now she’s happy to be sharing her lifelong love of Halloween with the whole neighborhood. “When I was in sixth grade, everyone was working and I was setting up holiday displays in the classroom,” Diane said. “To me, this is a ‘Happy Halloween’ thing, and it’s just a lot of fun.”

We’ve been here about a year and a half. • What do you like most about The Landings? Why? The community. I have no trouble running or walking dogs here. It’s secluded but in a safety kind of way. • Are you studying any foreign languages? Yes, I’m in my 7th year of Chinese. • Favorites ice cream? Mint chocolate chip. • Favorite school subject? English. • Favorite book? The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare. • Favorite TV Show? Agents of Shield. • Favorite sport? Tae Kwon Do. • Favorite color? Blue. • Favorite song? The Scientist by Coldplay. • Favorite movie? Hidden Figures. • Favorite food? Bow tie pasta with cheese. • Least favorite food? Eggplant. • What do you do in your spare time? Mostly reading and homework. I also volunteer with Girls Inc. once a week and am a 2nd degree black belt Legacy Instructor for Trautwein ATA. I started Tae Kwon Do in 7th grade. My Mom found out about it first and I decided to try it and stick with it. It helped me come out of my shell since it pushes you to the limits. Being aware of your limits is very powerful. I’d like to get as far as I can before college. Reasonably, I can’t move up in rank but I can improve how I’m instructing to lower levels. I teach a wide range of colored belt students, ages 7 – 13. • What are your Thanksgiving plans? Every year we go to visit Dad’s family in Georgia. It’s a big family. It’s always good to see everyone. We have all the traditional foods too. • What is something that you tried and failed and learned from? On one of my Tae Kwon Do tests, I didn’t pass with different attempts. I was down on myself. It was a setback in the beginning. It was frustrating then I went back to the basics and learned how to kick and passed the next time. • What do kids your age think about most? The future. Anything having to do with the future – college, career, the political atmosphere. It’s prominent in everything we see. • If you were a box of cereal, which one would you be? Special K with Red Berries. When I was little, I picked out all the red berries and ate them first!

He’s very down to Earth. I’d like his stance on things since he faced so many issues. He was so positive. I’d like to know how he got through it. • If you could change anything about school what would it be? Debbie Wilson’s - Grilled Scallops with Corn and Asparagus (you can also substitute with salad, potatoes, etc.)

This recipe is from Debbie Wilson’s healthy meal selections. You will find Debbie in the Fitness Center, or walking with Steve through The Landings keeping fit and youthful. As fall is here, the weather has still been summer-like so continuing to eat light and fresh is still on the menu. Eating fresh and light is the key to controlling weight (eating smaller meals more often) and feeling good. Here is a simple recipe that is inexpensive and low in calories. This serves 4 and is easy to make. Ingredients: • 1 tsp. lemon zest • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice • 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil • 1 tsp. table salt divided • 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper divided • 1 lb. fresh uncooked sea scallops (large) • 1 cup fresh tomatoes diced • 1/4 cup fresh basil chopped • cooking spray • 4 medium corn, husked • 1 lb. uncooked asparagus trimmed Instructions: Preheat stove top grill over medium high heat. Combine lemon zest, lemon juice, oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper in a medium bowl. Put scallops on a plate and drizzle with 1 Tbsp. lemon mixture; turn to coat and let stand at room temperature for 10 minutes. Add tomato and basil to remaining mixture and set aside. Meanwhile, lightly coat corn and asparagus with cooking spray; sprinkle with remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/.8 tsp. pepper. Grill corn until browned on all sides, turning occasionally, about 10 - 12 minutes. Grill asparagus until lightly charred and tender, turning occasionally, about 5 - 6 minutes. Place corn and asparagus on a serving platter; set aside (they will be served at room temperature). Coat scallops with cooking spray; place on grill pan. Grill until scallops are just cooked through, turning once about 5 minutes total; add to platter with corn and asparagus. Spoon tomato mixture over scallops and asparagus. ENJOY!

History of The Landings USTA Father Son Tournament The year was 1984 and the RAMAR GROUP was putting the last big touches on a new property called “The Landings.” Homes were nearly completed as well as the Tree Houses and others. What remained was a large area that needed to be developed, something that would draw people to drive to the end of the complex. A tennis club was developed and the top tennis pro in the area, Bob Luxembourg was at the helm for the club’s official opening on March 10th. Luxembourg was a great player, who ran clubs in other cities, as well as a promoter. Bob instantly developed a Premier Summer Tennis Camp for Juniors plus an Evening Adult Tennis Camp. He spread the word that the club was offering eight Har-Tru tennis courts, an Olympic style swimming pool, a spa and fitness center and a relaxing whirlpool. He created more interest with tennis activities such as Junior and Adult Tennis camps, Ladies Round-Robins, Beginner Clinics for Tots, Pre-Teens and Teens. He started many tournaments, mostly for charities. Players came from all over Sarasota and Florida to compete. A lot of money was raised for many charities. After 10 years, the club got a clearance to host a National Tournament it was called “The USTA National Father Son Tournament.” The year was 1993. The father had to be 60 or over with no age limit for the son. Being a national tournament, it was open to anyone from the U.S. As the tournament grew over the years, players have come from all parts of the world such as Canada, Hawaii, Texas, California, Puerto Rico, and Brazil. In 1999, The Landings received permission to add The Super Senior Tournament, the father had to

be 70 or older. Bob Luxembourg with is son Eric won the inaugural contest. For the last 12 years the tournament has grown thanks to our manager Kevin Lechlitner. Because of his dedication our club has improved with upgrades in many areas including court maintenance. Kevin has the ability to hire great people as evidenced by our pros Mo Moghina and John Janes; along with our tireless workers Hans and Edvin who take excellent care of our courts and overall maintenance. Three years ago Kevin got permission to start a third event, the Ultra Senior Tournament were the father is over 80. We now host three separate USTA sanctioned tournaments: the seniors, age 60+; the super seniors, age 70+; and now the ultras, age 80+. As the tournament has grown, so has the members’ involvement. We try to assign a member to each team that will make the players feel welcome and watch their matches. The players enjoy it and our members, called hosts, feel more involved with the tournament. The hosts are also invited to the player banquet. Some of us take two or three teams, one for each division. A big highlight of the tournament is the “Ladies Luncheon” where the ladies bring a variety of pot luck dishes for the players and their families. If you would like to participate as a host and/or contribute to the luncheon, details will be available in the pro shop, or call Dee and Ralph Ricapito: at 941-927-6261. THE TOURNAMENT STARTS THE WEEK BEFORE THANKSGIVING - BEGINNING ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13th.

Pot Luck Kitchen Ladies Luncheon The popular POT LUCK KITCHEN LADIES LUNCHEON would not be a success without the many helping hands of all our Landings ladies bringing their favorite dish. This year it’s on Thursday, November 15th, for all the players and their families to enjoy. Many of the recipes for our monthly “Recipe Corner” throughout the year originates from this table.

Ladies, let’s keep them coming! ALSO: Ladies who would like to help as servers, or can spend an hour to helpset up or break-down the luncheon, please sign up at the Pro Shop. You don’t have to be a tennis player. All residents are welcome to participate. Many Thanks... it’s fun all working together for this taste treat. Dee Ricapito

They’re also continuing their celebration of fall for just a little longer with Carrot Cake (you can stop baking, this is the ultimate Carrot Cake recipe...Carrot Cake ice cream with fresh walnuts and a thick ribbon of cream cheese frosting.) and Maple Walnut (Sweet Maple ice cream loaded with walnuts.) If you haven’t tried these two, they recommend that you get them through October before they’re gone until next year. Go Healthy – Go Organic

Fall flavors to try: Pumpkin Spice Latte, Cinnamon Roll, and Midnight Phantom

Being on vacation doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthy, especially when it comes to the sweeter things in life. Made In Rome Organic Gelato uses all organic ingredients and offers sugar-free, gluten-free, and vegan options. You’ll be hardpressed to find another gelateria in all of Florida were only organic ingredients are used. Did you know? Because of gelato’s thick texture and intense flavor you may feel the need to dial back the portion size, but don’t. Surprisingly, it actually tends to be lower in fat, sugar and calories than ice cream which contains anywhere between 10 to 25 percent fat. Gelato on the other hand stays around four to nine percent. By using more milk than cream, no egg yolks, along with a slow-churn process, your taste buds will be doing a happy dance with the intense flavors and silky textures this low calorie option provides. Of course, there are plenty of flavors to try and the staff at Made In Rome Organic Gelato generously provide samples of their house made gelato where a new flavor is produced every 15 minutes, and as their name implies, all ingredients used are organic. No hydrogenated fats or colorants, or preservatives are ever used. Some of the fall flavors to try are Matcha Latte, Pumpkin Spice latte, Cinnamon Roll and Midnight Phantom. Vegans rejoice Yes vegans, come on in because Made In Rome Organic Gelato is vegan friendly offering a selection of gelato, cones, shakes, and how about a vegan affogato al caffe? Whether you choose vegan-friendly or not, the affogato al caffe; a double shot of espresso topped with a scoop of gelato…any flavor, continues to be a customer favorite. Says owner, Diane TheronCuna, “People go crazy for this!” Owners Diane Theron-Cuna and husband, Massimo enjoy showing off the method used to construct their gelato. They invite you to watch the process as they create a batch of their sinfully delicious gelato. Theron-Cuna’s former career is fascinating, having no connection to her current business. She comes from a family of circus performers and has traveled around the world performing with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The family even has their own “Star of Fame” at St. Armands Circle - The Theron Cycling Troupe. Still a performer at heart, she continues to entertain by retelling stories of her former days all the while churning out a fresh batch of her all-natural, organic gelato. Many customers welcome the warm conversation and exciting adventures she so enthusiastically shares. Made In Rome Organic Gelato is located at 5204 Ocean Blvd., in the Siesta Key Village. Their hours are 11:00 am to 11:00 pm daily. (941) 960-5344, www.madeinromegelato.com (Advertorial)

THE LANDINGS EAGLE November 2018

Landings Management Association, Inc. 2019 Annual Assessment At the November regular meeting, the LMA Board of Directors will approve a budget and Annual Assessment for the 2019 fiscal/calendar year. The proposed budget, which appears in this issue, sets the 2019 Assessment at $1,281.00 per single unit, an increase of $62.00 over the 2018 assessment. In the preparation of this budget, the LMA Finance Committee reevaluated the reserve portion of the budget given recent projections for projects required for both lakes and drainage management. As a result, both the operating and reserve components of the assessment for these items were increased. Other operating items reflect a reduction in that portion of the assessment. The resulting $1,281.00 assessment per single unit reflects a reduction of $4.00 in the operating portion and an increase of $66.00 in the resend portion. While some last-minute changes may be made, it is likely that this proposed budget will be formally adopted at the November 1st regular LMA board meeting.

The Healing Power of Friendship Dale Wolfson is the volunteer coordinator for Compeer Sarasota. Compeer provides healing friendships and mentoring for youth ages 5 to 17 and adults of all ages living with mental illness. It is an internationally-recognized mental health agency, and Compeer’s volunteers are positioned to make a remarkable difference in someone’s life. As volunteer coordinator, Dale looks for friendly, accepting and emotionally mature volunteers who are looking for a flexible opportunity, one which commits them to an average of 4 hours per month for a period of at least one year. It is not a lot of time, but the results can be profound. The organization was founded by Bernice “Bunny” Skirboll over 40 years ago. She had suffered a near-fatal automobile accident, and her long rehabilitation made her realize the incredible power of friendship. She got together with psychologists at the University of Rochester and started the program nationally in 1973. Today there are 4000 volunteers in Compeer organizations around the world! The concept is simple; it is about doing things that you regularly enjoy doing and sharing those experiences with someone who truly appreciates your time and company. It pairs up volunteers with someone who is looking for a friend and, in the case of youth, a mentor and role model. Volunteers participate with their matches in activities such as dining out, attending sporting events, visiting museums, creating art projects, cooking,

LMA Meeting Notes

and outdoor recreation. Choices are limitless, and activities are based on mutual interest. Volunteers might also tutor or help youth with homework. The idea here is to build self-confidence, self-reliance, and healthy relationships through the healing power of friendship. Clients are referred into the program by their therapists, doctors, school counselors or case managers. Volunteers are thoroughly screened and trained for their important work. They are matched according to their preferences, and the matches are supported every step of the way by the Compeer staff. There are 2-hour quarterly roundtables where volunteers meet with other volunteers to discuss common issues, concerns and share experiences. As Compeer volunteer coordinator, Dale Wolfson is always available to provide help and advice, as are teachers and parents of the youth, as well as the mental health professionals who recommended the clients to the program. Compeer gives all volunteers the tools and resources necessary. They know who to call should they have an issue. There is LOTS of support available within the program. Says Dale, “The children and adults we serve may suffer from anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder, or schizophrenia, a full range of mental health disorders. The youth may also have attention deficit disorder or exhibit symptoms of autism. Usually the adults are isolated, their family and friends having rejected them because of their illness. We are dealing with fragile people here. That’s why we

ask the volunteer to make a commitment for at least one year. At the end of that year we reevaluate the relationship, but most of our matches go on for many years.” All volunteers must pass screening: fingerprints for the FBI, background checks through the Dept. of Children & Families and the Child Abuse Registry Dale taught school before stopping to raise her family. In 1996, she and her husband moved to Pennsylvania. There she and her husband ran the KLAS program, Kids Learning After School, for at-risk students, funded federally by the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. Her background in education includes being a classroom teacher of middle school and high school students, and a life skills teacher to developmentally-delayed adults at Children’s Haven. Speaking from personal experience as a Compeer volunteer with an adult match, Dale says: “This is one of the most rewarding experiences one can have as a volunteer. Working with Compeer can be a life changer for both the client and the volunteer. I no longer think of my time spent with my friend as ‘volunteering.’I’ve made a new friend and we socialize together just as I do with all my other friends. It’s win-win for both of us.” Although the program calls for a one-year commitment, Snowbirds are able to participate. In today’s world, the electronic meeting room is useful, especially with kids. When out of town, snowbirds can stay in touch with their

match via Skype, phone, Facebook, Instagram, etc. In summary Compeer’s model matches people in a 1:1 relationship that utilizes the HEALING POWER OF FRIENDSHIP to change lives. Several Landings residents now volunteer at Compeer Sarasota, but more are always needed. Learn more at www.compeersarasota.org. Talk with Dale Wolfson about this extraordinary and important opportunity. She may be reached at the Compeer office, located in the administrative offices of Coastal Behavioral Healthcare, at 941-927-8900, ext. 1123 and dwolfson@coastalbhorg, or personally at dalewolfson1@gmail.com and at 941- 923-2229 or 717-404-7815.

Lakes are beginning to show bank erosion problems. Along with the Landscape and Environmental Committees, we are working with the county to plan erosion mitigation strategies. Some of the costs will be offset by the expected award of a county grant but most will have to be assumed by the LMA. The finance committee has been working diligently to build reserves so funds will be available to keep lakes and drainage systems functioning properly. A direct hit by one major hurricane would wipe out most of the reserves. Last year’s cleanup from Irma, cost thousands of dollars.

LAKES REPORT

By Diana Colson

heavy rains. Water coming into Lake 1 (North Gate Lake) was so strong, it washed trash from the shopping center and Tamiami Trail over the trash collection system (Water Goat). The County was alerted and asked to monitor debris coming into the lakes from outside The Landings. The Landings was recommended to receive a Community grant from Sarasota County to plant water plants in some of the lakes. Its final approval will be determined by a County Commission vote in October or November. The Lakes Committee is currently soliciting bids for erosion control on Lake 6 (Bayview Lake). Knupp thanks the Associations who have implemented the “ring of responsibility” around their lakes. Allowing the grass to grow longer around the edge of the lakes prevents grass clippings from getting into the lakes.

MAINTENANCE

Maintenance Committee chair, Joan Golub, reported debris was removed from several drains and areas to improve water flow. Three large construction trucks

THE LANDINGS EAGLE November 2018

were escorted in and out of The Landings. Several areas of damaged turf along roadways was repaired. Low tree limbs are still being broken and damaged by large trucks. Debris and trash was collected and removed from Kestral Park North Lake.

PENDING PROJECTS

Damaged curbs along Landings Blvd. and Kestral Park Way South will be repaired once a contractor start date is established. The Gazebo garbage receptacle is being repaired. A new safety mirror has been ordered to replace the broken one at the intersection of Landings Blvd. and Kestral Park Dr.

COMPLETED PROJECTS Spot power washing was completed on a border fence. One section of green algae mold could not be removed. Bulbs were replaced and lighting fixtures were repaired in a few areas. Two hazardous low lying tree limbs were removed along the Nature Trail.
