WATER AEROBICS RETURN

Coming Soon: Updated Gate Access System and New Car Decals! By Landings Management Association & Safety & Security Committee We would like to give you an update on the status of the South Gate access issue and our plans to move forward to upgrade The Landings to a new, more reliable gate access control system. What happened at South Gate? As you are probably aware, we experienced a major failure of the gate control electronics at the South Gate due to an electrical surge from a nearby lightning strike. As a result, we need to replace the gate access control hardware. There are two possible solutions to repairing the gate. • R e pl a c e t h e d a m a g e d hardware with an identical unit. However, the prior unit is 15 years old, is no longer supported by the manufacturer, and would cost $15,000. • Replace our gate access hardware with newer technology called RFID (Radio Frequency Ide n t i f i c at io n), wh i c h o u r security technology consultant recommended. This technology is more reliable, surge protected, warrantied for ten years, and costs significantly less. The Florida DOT SunPass System also uses this technology. For about the same price as one original unit, we can install five new access control units

at the north, south and main gate. How did we choose the vendor? Because of the high cost, The Board instructed us to get a competitive bid for replacing the equipment. We received two bids and at their May meeting, the Board voted to accept the bid of our existing vendor which was 15% lower than the competing bid for the same system. The equipment and vehicle readers have been ordered and are due to be delivered in the next four to five weeks. What is changing? Because we are changing to RFID technology, we will need to issue and install new access decals on resident vehicles. Good news – the current bar code reader system in use at the Main gate and North gate will continue to function alongside the new system, which gives us a gradual window for this transition. The Security Committee is working quickly with our vendor, Secure Access, to move forward with obtaining the new RFID decals as quickly as possible. The plan is to install the new decals on your vehicles before the new units are installed and operational at the gates. Decal Rollout Phasing • First Phase -South Gate:

Because of the current South Gate entry issue, the first phase will prioritize those vehicles belonging to south end residents, including Heron Way, Starling Drive, Pintail Way and Eagles Point Circle. • Second Phase – the rest of The Landings who are in residence: During the second phase, we will issue decals to the remaining Landings residents who are here. • Third Phase – Deactivate Old System: Once we have as many readers installed on vehicles as possible, we will switch over the new system. The system will run in tandem for a period of time to ensure the new system is working properly. Once we are satisfied the new system is working properly, we will shut down the old decal system. • Fourth Phase – Returning Seasonal Residents: Residents who have left for the summer will need to get a new decal from the Main Gate when they return and won’t have automatic gate access until then. We are still firming up the process for this, depending on numbers. How will I know when to get my new decal? Over the next few weeks, we will publish a schedule and

location where residents can come to have the new decals installed by a group of resident volunteers. Once we have the logistics are finalized, we will notify residents by email of the times and places to get your decals installed. We will also post the schedule at the LRC. To have manageable size groups, we will likely issue decals by alphabetic groups of resident’s last names. Planning items: • Please don’t request new decals from the Main Gate - they are not involved in this phase of the decal rollout process. • This is a large undertaking – about 1500 decals in total so please have patience with the process and the volunteers manning the decal installation effort. • To obtain the new decal, you will need to bring your current car registration and car to the designated location. We apologize for the time this has taken and the inconvenience this has caused those that rely on the entry at the south gate. We appreciate your patience and believe this new system will give us many years of reliable service. Thank you!

A s a t e e n ag e r g r ow i n g up i n T h e Landings, Shaun Greenspan enjoyed playing Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series. In the game, players try to touch and win different triangles of power known as Triforces: TriForce of Power, TriForce of Wisdom, and TriForce of Courage. Years later, when he launched his own video production company, that’s what he chose for its name. Now, his TriForce Pictures has paid tribute to Greenspan’s roots in Sarasota by debuting “Original Splendor” at the 23rd Annual Sarasota Film Festival in May, a film about Sarasota’s Historic Courthouse. The 17-minute documentary was feted at a special event in early May; not just any event, but in fact the Annual TriForce Pictures Film Festival Soiree, a party that Shaun and TriForce have hosted for the past five years. It was also the first private party to ever be held in the outside front courtyard of the Courthouse. The Treehouses and loved growing up in The Landings. “It’s beautiful, warm and welcoming,” says Greenspan. “I loved hanging out on the Boardwalk, and how friendly everyone is.” After graduating from Riverview High School, Shaun went to Manatee Community College and studied Cinema; he found he was not only proficient at creating video content, but he also liked it. His con nection with film and entertainment took him out to Los Angeles where he enrolled in Columbia College of Hollywood and earned a B.S. in Cinema. He met and worked with a directing teacher who became a mentor, guide and dear friend. Actor Corey Allen, who appeared as “Buzz” in “Rebel Without a Cause,” taught him a lot about directing and producing . “But Allen taught me as much about myself as anything,” says Greenspan. “He taught me that ‘at any age we are who we’ve always been.’” Allen passed away in 2010. Shaun launched a career in production and worked on several top television shows and films including “ER, The West Wing, Six Feet Under, Nip/Tuck, Big Love, True Blood, Mad Men, Little Miss Sunshine, and Where the Wild Things Are. He relished even the eight-tosixteen-hour days on the set, but also found he missed that “sense of community” he had living in Sarasota, and his family. Parents Betty & Rich Greenspan still live in The Landings, now on Heron way. First, Shaun decided to start his own company – and dug out the name TriForce Pictures. Then he moved back to Florida and to The Landings. “I like to tell stories, and touch people in that way,” says Greenspan. He compares the work of writing, producing and directing films to that of his time as a deejay. In a completely separate career, Shaun was a DJ getting people to move with his musical

presentations. Yet, even under the name “Solo,” it was working with others that drew him into storytelling. “With the music, I could take the audience on an emotional roller coaster. With film, it’s the same thing.” Of all the hats he wears – writing, directing, producing – what he enjoys most of all is “collaborating with people to accomplish creative goals.” You ca n watch “Or ig i n a l Splendor” now on the Courthouse website at www. sarasotaclerk.com . It is an excellent example of collaboration as Greenspan hand-selected the cinematographer, editor and others, surrounding himself with professionals whom he enjoyed working with. May was an eventful month for your board of directors. Several new initiatives were approved by the board which will have a sig n i f ic a nt i mpac t on ou r community. A b ig t h a n k you to t ho s e who responded to our survey about kayaks. We had a great response and our committee, chaired by Gary Kurnov, has been given the approval to purchase kayak racks to be placed on the nature trail near the water. The committee is finalizing policies and procedures that will be put in place to make sure we provide a safe and equitable program for our residents. It has taken several years to come up with a plan that will have widespread support. We are confident that the addition of kayak storage will add value to our community and provide a muchneeded amenity for our residents. More details will be forthcoming. New s c a n n i ng e qu ipme nt, similar to that used by SunPass, has been ordered for our gates. We will prioritize getting the South gate installed and fully opened first. Please be patient. Everyone will need to receive new decals. It will take several weeks before we will be able to implement the new program. As our community ages, we have noticed that signage has become a problem. Many are old and in need of repair. In several areas, there are too many signs. A new committee has been appointed to look into a long-term strategy to upgrade our signage and create a more consistent look for our community. We have selected contractors to repair the bridge on the nature trail near the Treehouses as well as to do work on the gazebo to extend the steps over water that accumulates during high tides. Many thanks to Allison Taylor and David Osborn who chair our nature trail committee. They are also looking into replenishing the shell and gravel on parts of the pathway which get covered by water during high tides.

Jim Goldman has agreed to again chair our holiday lights com m it tee. Our holidays a re always festive with special lighting upon entering the main gate. Are you a handy person who likes to fix things? We care looking for a chair for our Maintenance Committee. If you are interested and want to be considered, please contact me at nolshansky@aol.com. Safety is a major concern of LMA. Please drive, walk or ride you bikes carefully in The Landings, and please report speeders to the main gate. Wear reflective vests and carry a flashlight when walking at night. We continue to rotate the location of the radar which has video capabilities that identifies those violating our speed limits. Do you have special travel plans now that pandemic restrictions are being lifted? Take a copy of the Eagle with you and take a photo with the paper at one of your special locations. We want to resume “The Eagle Has Landed” section in the paper. Just send us your photos with a caption indicating who is in the photo and where. Just a reminder, if you are going to be away during hurricane season, please bring lawn furniture, grills, and portable plants/pots inside. Storms can cause these items to go airborne and potentially cause damage to your property and that of your neighbors.

LMA Meeting Notes By Trebor Britt LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky began the Zoom meeting by announcing the following during his president’s report: • After lightning damaged the South Gate decal electronics it was determined the cost of repair would have been more than the cost of upgrading all the scanning devices at the three gates. The board wishes to apologize to residents for the inconvenience of waiting on bids and repairs. • Olshansky thanked Michael Knupp, Bill Whitman, and neighbors for cutting enough of the tree that fell across Peregrine Road to allow traffic to pass. All of the remaining tree debris has been removed by a contractor. • Details and strategies regarding the landscaping issue with Eagles Point Association will not be discussed during this open meeting as a solution may become a legal matter. A meeting has been scheduled with the association president to amicably resolve the issue. • Dick Bayles was thanked for all his work regarding the website and technology issues. The communications committee is working with Dick to train several new technology volunteers. • The Eagle Committee is looking into ways to improve the newspaper. Ideas for stories or other content, photos or anyone willing to act as a reporter please contact Committee Chair Gordon Garrett. Residents are encouraged to take a photo of themselves with a copy of The Eagle when they travel someplace interesting for the section, “The Eagle Has Landed.” Also, let businesses you visit know you saw their ad in The Eagle newspaper. Ads provide the resources to have such a great newspaper. Soon a survey will be distributed soliciting ideas to improve the newspaper. • Special thanks to Jim Goldman for agreeing to coordinate and manage holiday lighting this year. • Up to date resident contact information as well as vendor recommendations is available on the website. LMA documents, rules etc. are there as well. Since virus restrictions are easing, group activities may be resumed soon. The website includes a calendar of events. Residents are encouraged to notify The Board of any corrections or updates of Association information. • Safety is a major concern of the LMA. Residents are asked to drive, walk and ride bike carefully and to report speeder to the main gate. Wear reflective vest and carry a flashlight when walking at night. Be aware the speed detecting radar, which has video capabilities identifying violators, is continually moved to different locations. • Residents who will not be present during the hurricane season are reminded to bring lawn furniture, grills and portable plants and pots inside.

FINANCE REPORT

Treasurer, Gary Kurnov reported income for March exceeded expenses by $8,200. This was a result of lower expenses for grounds, maintenance and repair, utilities,

security, communications, community events, and administration. Year to date March income is ahead of budget by $18,400. An irrigation pipe repair and driveway replacement on Kestral Park Terrace caused a $34,000 expense deducted from Lakes and Drainage reserve. Twenty outstanding balances remain unpaid which total $32,000. The Finance Committee is urging payment before additional fees are added to balances due to collection action.

MANAGERS REPORT

Landing’s Manager, Steve Brockenshire reported the following: • A complete list of vendors used by LMA and Associations is being compiled to help streamline the payable system. A list of potential vendors that may be used in the future is also being collected. Faci litat i ng quicker pay ments for vendors was also briefly discussed.

KAYAK PROJECT

Gary Kurnov reported highlights of the results of the kayak storage interest survey. One hundred eighty residents responded. About 30% of respondents reported launching a craft a few times or more per month from The Landings and 70% said they would launch a few times or more if a storage facility was located near a water access point. Residents own a total of 150 kayaks/paddle boards. Some residents have more than one. Residents were asked if they would spend $100 annually and sign an LMA rental agreement to store their water craft on the Nature Trail near the observation tower and 55 said yes. In addition, 67 said they would be willing to assume responsibility for theft or damage. Finally, just over 70% of respondents strongly agreed that providing a storage unit for watercraft would improve property values at the Landings. Kurnov reported approval by Sarasota County Environmental Protection Department to install racks along the Nature Trail near the observation tower. A motion was made to purchase and order 2 Kayak storage racks costing approximately $4,000. After brief questions and discussion, the motion passed.

NATURE TRAIL

Three concerns were raised regarding the Nature Trail. • The bridge next to the Tree Houses at the end of the nature trail going north needs repair. Two bids of $7,800 were received using pressure treated wood • The steps to the Gazebo need to be extended to prevent people from having to walk through water for access. $9,200 • Low levels on the nature trail need to be raised so high tide water will no longer cover the trail. A motion was made to accept the bids for repair of the bridge and to extend the steps of the gazebo. After questions and discussion, the motion passed.

GATE ACCESS READERS

The South Gate vehicle reader system

damaged by lightning is no longer under warranty and would cost $15,000 to repair/ replace. Bids were received to replace all five readers with new system and new technology similar to a Sun Pass vehicle reader. The new system is not as effected by power surges and has a 10-year warrantee. The bids for five units including installation and vehicle readers was $21,500 from one vendor and $18,500 from The Landings current vendor. The data input, to match vehicles and readers would take approximately six hours at a cost of $700. Service of the units is also a consideration and Knupp reported a stellar reputation by the current vendor. A motion was made to accept the recommendation of the Safety and Security Committee to approve the lower bid and move forward. After questions and discussion, the motion passed.

LANDING’S SIGNS

Many of the wood carved signs in the Tree House area are showing their age. About 10 have been identified to be replaced. Cost of replacing the signs with new wood carved signs is $400-$500 each. A suggestion was made for the board to meet with the Tree House Association members to explore the possibility of replacing the signs with equally attractive signs at a much lower cost. Another suggestion was offered to have maintenance drive through The Landing’s identifying all signs needing repair, replacement or elimination and then to readdress the issue. Olshansky ended the discussion by saying he now had a sense of the board regarding the matter.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Chairman Michael Knupp reported the South Gate entrance wound be closed until a new decal reader is installed. A power surge during a Lightning storm destroyed the system. The exit remains open. The Suspension Hearing Committee upheld the suspension of a guests driving privileges for 30 days. The hearing process is a requirement of Florida Statute. A suspect who allegedly stole a n uninstalled slider door set valued at $4000 has been identified by a collaborative effort between The Landings security staff, the security system vendor, and the Sarasota Sheriff’s Department. The vehicle was identified, and a Sheriff’s detective will be doing a follow-up investigation. A resident reported outside construction work on Saturday morning on Peregrine Point Circle, North. The main gate had no record of a construction vehicle entering the main gate. After further investigation, it was discovered a subcontractor had entered through the resident’s backyard off Camino Real outside The Landings. Work was suspended, the contractor advised of the rules regarding days and times construction is allowed, and where the contractors must enter The Landings. The general contractor was advised of the rules. Committee members Jim Goldman and Mike Knupp arranged an informal meeting

with the Sheriff’s Special Operations Bureau to discuss various Landings traffic control and security options. As a gated community there are a limited number of options which can be implemented with help from the Sheriff’s office. Police and EMS will always come in the event of a medical emergency, report of a crime in progress or to investigate any other criminal activity.

RULES GOVERNING DELIVERIES

Residents and renters are reminded that because there are narrow streets in The Landings, trucks and trucks with trailers extending beyond 40 feet in length are not allowed. Vendors must make arrangements to transfer their loads to smaller vehicles before entering. All deliveries must be made between 8 AM and 5 PM on Monday-Saturday. No Sunday deliveries are allowed. Exceptions can be approved by Association Presidents or board members. The main gate personnel must be notified in person or by email by 5 PM the day before.

LAKES

A letter was sent to all owners surrounding Lake 1 regarding soil erosion control. The letter informed residents of the background and current status of the lake. Landings volunteer board members and other volunteers have been working with the county to preserve the embankments and the lake by implementing a plan to slow the erosion of the shoreline. The plan is to install or replace the failed riprap in certain areas. Riprap is a permanent, erosion and resistant ground cover of various size, loose, angular stone. Riprap protects soil from erosion due to concentrated runoff. It is used to stabilize unstable slopes. It is also used to slow the velocity of concentrated runoff. This will prevent/deter further erosion of homeowner’s propert y and help chan nel water f low (especially in heavy storms) toward the middle of the channel. Sediment buildup now present in the middle of the channel will be mitigated in the short run, but a final solution will likely rest with Sarasota County. LMA’s engineer has contacted the county to encourage them to dredge the channel to keep high flow rain events from causing further erosion.

COMMUNICATIONS

Com mu n icat ion s Chai r, Joa n Kopli n reported her committee is reviewing status and possible improvements to the website, The Eagle, direct mail and email. Website improvements, ideas and additions are being investigated. Dick Bayles was thanked for doing an incredible job with the website and managing data for the last 10 years. New technology possibilities to streamline data management are also being explored. The committee is soliciting anyone who has database, WordPress and website experience for their help. If you know of anyone, please contact members of the Communications Committee. A host of great ideas and new articles for The Eagle newspaper were discussed during a joint meeting of The Eagle Committee and Brion Palmer, the publisher. A survey soliciting feedback regarding what works, and what doesn’t, as well as new ideas etc. will be distributed to residents.

Racquet Club News | LRC President’s Report  As some of you know, next month, our ver y ow n Kevi n Lechlitner, will celebrate his 15year anniversary as our General Manager. Holy Donkeys – does Tempus Fugit. But how well do you know Kevin – other than the smiling face who greets you as you arrive to the Club? Kevin is a true Florida native, born in St Petersburg but grew up in Venice where his father w a s a Ve n i c e H ig h S c h o o l Economics teacher who coached both the basketball and tennis teams. His father, a top club player, would take Kevin to the tennis courts and after his m atc h wou ld h it ba l l s w it h his son beginning when Kevin was 3 years old. At that age, the wooden racquet was so heavy t h at Kev i n h ad to u s e b ot h hands to swing it – and as many of you know, Kevin still hits a two-handed forehand! As a ju n ior player, Kev i n started tournament tennis at the age of six and his parents spent many a weekend shuttling him up and down the gulf coast while he played tournaments. He ultimately achieved a top 20 ran king for jun ior ten n is in the state of Florida – a very impressive ranking given the talent rich junior players in our state. Kevin went on to play four ye a r s o f c ol le g e t e n n i s o n scholarship at Andrew College in Georgia and Coker University in South Carolina. Kevin continued tournament play after college with several notable tournament wins at the Make-A-Wish tournament, the Pro Exhibition Series at the Boca Grande Club and he was named Player of the Year for the USPTA Exhibition Tour in 2000. When asked what changes Kevin has seen over his 15 years at the LRC, he commented on his very first day of work here, there was a whopping total of two court reservations for the day – and both at 8 AM. At this point, Kevin was wondering just what he got himself into. Fortunately, the tennis has grown well past two court reservations per day! The 2020 tour nament was cancelled by the USTA due to the COVID-19 Pa ndem ic. As of the writing of this article, the 2021 event is on track for November 16 – 21. It will be nice to see all the players return to The Landings for their shot at the coveted gold ball.

For all the national championships this year, the USTA has made some changes to the format of the tournament. It is no longer a regular draw as it was in the past. Moving forward, the participants will be placed in flights. They will play a match against all the other teams in their flight. The top team in each flight will move on to the semifinals. All of those matches will be 2 out of 3 sets

with a match-tiebreak in lieu of a third set. The final and third & fourth place playoff will be a full 2 out of 3 sets. This was done to guarantee participants more than two matches whether they win or lose. In the old format, a team could lose in the first round and then lose in the first round of the consolation draw and be out of the tournament.

Manager’s Report

News From the Court

By Kevin Lechlitner

By Adrian “Mo” Moghina

June has arrived. The weather has certainly started to warm up. T he reser vat ion s for t he tennis courts and Fitness Center have slowed down a bit as well. This is the time of year when we t r y to ge t s ome proje c t s done. Although the annual court resurfacing won’t begin until August, we do have two other projects pending for the courts. The net posts are scheduled to be replaced in June. These are the original posts from when the Club was built in 1984. We had to replace the posts on one court a few months ago. Fortunately, we were able to make it through season before having to do the rest. I will keep you updated as to the timing of that project as a few courts will be closed at a time. I h ave a l s o orde r ed new windscreens for all the courts.

As they were nearing the end of their life expectancy, several screens were damaged by Mother Nature. You may have noticed some of them flapping in the

breeze while you were playing. Without the grommet strip at the bottom of the screen, we have no way to attach it to the fence. Also, the water fountains that were ordered over three months ago should be arriving very soon. Thanks to the pandemic, things are taking much longer than normal to arrive. I would like to than k Joh n McFet r idge for volu nteer i ng t o t a k e o v e r t h e M o n d a y, Wednesday, Friday social tennis group beginning in June. He has created a website and written a computer program that will m a k e t h e s c h e du l i n g mu c h e a sie r. T h e c u r r e nt mont h’s schedule as well as the ability to register for the following month will all be on line. If you are interested in joining the group, please let me know. I will be happy to help you get started.

I want to thank Dick Bayles, Kevin Lechlitner and The Board for careful consideration and the responsible steps in opening the tennis facility. I really appreciate t h at t hey not on ly took i nto c o n s ide r at i o n t h e s a f e t y o f everyone but also the wellbeing and livelihood of the tennis and clubhouse staff. Opening in phases has been a big success. Beginning with singles and private lessons for the first few weeks. Then, just recently, adding doubles and limited numbers in clinics. Their approach shows responsibility a nd profession a l ism. We a re so lucky to have them. I know other clubs took different steps to opening. I want to also thank our members for their patience and understanding with the process. Now that we are having more players on the courts, I urge

Undeniably, the “Siesta Key Watercolor GemstoneTM” has captured the colors of this experience. It’s no secret that the sand on Siesta Key Beach is composed of 99% pure quartz. The crystalline white sand of Siesta Key is luxurious, soft, white and cool to the touch 365 days a year. This is why our beloved beach has been revered as one of the most beautiful in the world. Music Sprang from the Ashes of COVID on Landings Boulevard By Dee Ricapito Gary & Angie Eason, who live on Landings Blvd. (across from the Racquet Club), began to entertain and treat the neighborhood to a blue grass jam session. “It a l l s t a r t e d b e c au s e o f Covid-19,” Gary said, who has played the banjo for fifty years and Angie plays the big base. Angie also likes to dance to the beat while she plays. It all began one day during COVID and the prospect of watching more TV was disheartening. “We decided to go outside and play our instruments with friends in our driveway, and hoped people would want to listen,” Gary said. Both Gary and Angie felt this was a unique way to have fun with others. Joining the Easons were other La ndi ngs musicia n s: Michael Cohen, (blues ma n) g uitarist; Peter McHugh, comes over to play his guitar from Heron Way; Bob Fernander stops in occasionally with his ukulele; Gary Bowen, from the Pro Shop, brought his 3-String cigar box guitar and harmonica, too. Next door neighbor, Lynn Cassell added some rhythm with her tambourine. The jam sessions would attract crowds of approximately 30 people including dog walkers and people driving by. Neighbors would bring beach chairs, snacks, and clap hands and sing along to the music. The Easons are snowbirds, and not only did they be pack up their musical instruments but also their three horses they have here at the Morningstar stable in North Port. They go back to their own farm and stable near Lafayette, Indiana. The duo house and help train the Prude Equestrian team horses there, as well as teach and train children to ride. Gary was anxious to get back. They mainly plant corn, soy beans and, of course, hay for the horses. They plan to stay until the harvest. Gary was Angie’s blue grass musical influence while Angie told Gary, he would be marrying into the horse world. They have been horsing around ever since!

This Summer, Help Your Pup Beat the Heat By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect Sure, summer isn’t truly underway until late June, but the temperatures are already climbing. Now is time to prepare your pups for the potential dangers of the coming months. Indoors, outside, or on the go, here are a few of the best ways you can help your dogs beat the heat all summer long.

or two for shade, rest, and water. While your dog certainly needs regular exercise, extended direct sun exposure— especially during heavy activity—can lead to overheating, dehydration, and exhaustion. So, find a nice tree, grab a drink, and take it easy every once in awhile.

Speaking of Hydration

At Home

During the hot summer months it’s not just during walks or play that your dog needs water – they need regular access to fluids around the clock. Even when the sun is down, heat and humidity can take a toll on dogs, particularly those with heavy coats. Keep the water bowl full at all times, and make sure you’ve got hydration resources on hand during travel. To further encourage hydration, we recommend occasionally adding a cup of delicious bone broth to the water bowl. For an extra treat that beats the heat, try a frozen bone broth cube – your best friend will thank you for it.

Cranking the AC all day can be expensive, but it’s important to maintain a healthy temperature in the house. Thankfully, you don’t have to run up a hefty energy bill to keep your home reasonably cool. On especially sunny days, we recommend pulling the shades to slow in-home heating. Also, setting your thermostat to a tolerable but also energy efficient level can help you manage increasing exterior temps without breaking the bank.

In the Car

We’ve all heard the stories, so this warning should come as no surprise: leaving your dog alone in the car during warmer weather is extremely dangerous. Even in modest heat, dogs left in a vehicle unattended are at risk for heatstroke, a serious condition that can result in organ damage or even death. And yes, we encourage you to avoid cutting corners with decisions like parking in the shade or leaving the windows open – it’s just not safe.

such as watermelon and bananas. Fill ‘em up, pop ‘em in the freezer, and in two hours they’ll be ready for your dog to enjoy.

More Refreshing Treats

Extra Precautions

Your dog cannot only beat the heat this summer – they can indulge a little while they’re at it. In addition to savory options like frozen bone broth, you can spoil your pup with sweet treats like frozen yogurt or pupsicles. The ice cream we enjoy during hot days can be a little heavy on the sugar and dairy, and might upset your pup’s tummy. But thanks to products like Bear & Rat Frozen Yogurt or Nana Berry Goat Pup-Sicles your dog can live a little too while avoiding unnecessary calories. There are also fillable dog toys from companies like Chilly Penguin that can be stuffed with tasty, pup appropriate snacks

Outdoors

Out for a long walk? Playing in the yard for a bit? If you’re out with your pup when the sun is out, make sure you mix in a break

a little exercise and help them cool down at the same time. Don’t have immediate access to water? Try innovative products like a cooling vest, collar, or the Hydro Cooling Mat. You can’t change the weather, but you can make sure your pup always stays safe and comfortable. With just a few precautions and the occasional seasonal treat, you and your dog can enjoy the best of summer.

There are a few additional measures you can take to ensure your dog stays safe in the hot sun. Believe it or not, dogs can get sunburned just like us. If you’re planning to be outside for a while, be sure to apply a dog-safe sunscreen to susceptible areas like the nose and ears. Indirect sun can also do damage if your pup spends too much time on hot surfaces like asphalt. A little protective balm on the paw pads can go a long way. Finally, whether it’s a full dip at the beach or a wade in the kiddie pool, getting in the water is a great way to get your pup

Just for Laughs for Father’s Day Compiled by Dee Ricapito Well finally, they just had to come sooner or later — “Blonde mens” jokes!

A blonde man is in the bathroom, and his wife shouts: “Did you find the shampoo?” He answers, “Yes, but I’m not sure what to do...it’s for dry hair, and I’ve just wet mine.” My ex-wife still misses me. But her aim is steadily improving. A blonde man shouts frantically into the phone, “My wife is pregnant, and her contractions are only two minutes apart”. The Doctor asks, “Is this her first child?” “No!” he shouts, “this is her husband!”

JUNE 2021 27th State Media, LLC

Heading into summer and the market is hotter than ever

My girlfriend accused me of cheating. I told her she was starting to sound like my wife. A friend told the blonde man: “Christmas is on a Friday this year.” The blonde then said, “Let’s hope it’s not the 13th.” The other day, my wife asked me to pass her lipstick, but I accidentally passed her a glue stick. She still isn’t talking to me. (A cell phone in an upscale gym locker room in NYC rings and the man puts it on loud speaker next to him … everyone else in the room stops to listen): Man : Hello? Woman : Hi honey, it’s me. Are you at the club? Man : Yes. Woman : I’m out shopping and found a beautiful leather coat. It’s only $2,000 – is it OK if I buy it? Man : Sure, go ahead if you like it that much. Woman : I also stopped by that new Lexus dealership and saw one of the new models I really like – it’s on an opening special. Man : How much? Woman : $90,000. Man : Wow! OK, but for that price I want it with all the options. Woman : Great! Oh, and one more thing … I was just talking to Jamie and found out that the house we wanted to buy last year is back on the market … they’re asking $980,000 for it. Remember it was well over a million when we looked at it? Man : I dunno. Make an offer for $900,000 and they’ll probably take it. If not, we can go the extra $80,000 if that’s what you really want. Woman : OK. I’ll see you later! I love you so much! Man : I love you to. (The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room were staring at him in astonishment, mouths wide open.) The man turns around and says : “Anyone know whose phone this is”? Two blonde men find three grenades, and they decide to take them to a police station. One asked: “What if one explodes before we get there?” The other says: “We’ll lie and say we only found two.” Why don’t men make ice cubes? They don’t know the recipe. What does the smart guy do at the M&M factory? Proof-read. Did you hear about the blonde guy who won the gold medal at the Olympics? He had it bronzed. PS: Please note If you have Grey hair, you’re not a Blonde!

Gone are the days where summer was the “slow season” in real estate. Buyers continue to be drawn to Sarasota, especially The Landings, and now is prime time for sellers to take advantage of the market heating up. Inventory is still at a critical low and demand is high, resulting in homes moving off the market as quickly as they’re being listed and selling at the highest value. Do you know what your home is worth? Scan the QR code with your smart device and type in your information. You’ll receive a custom home valuation that we’ll enhance to include any improvements you’ve made and share your home’s true market value.

And while the name may have some Sa rasot a dowagers clutch i ng their pearls while swooning from a case of the vapors, perhaps Lady Braidentown and her BFF Sarah Sota-Noseinaire should lighten up a bit. After all, the place is just trying to satisfy an altogether natural yearning ... What kind of yearning you ask? Well, of course, a burning, churning, passionate yearning for ... hot dogs. Yes, hot dogs. Prepared in a variety of regional styles from across this great land. So doggoneit, wiggle your buns on down to 1544 Main St. and indulge your lustful desire for ... again ... hot dogs ... nothing more, nothing less. Just hot dogs ... naked or dressed as you wish to satisf y your own personal culinaryfantasies. Rather, we’re referring to his drives off the tee that can be spectacular examples of power and grace when he is in top form, but far less formidable – when with even the slightest fractional misalignment of body and club his swing goes awry, leading to a loss of confidence and in some well-publicized cases a fall from the leader board. Worse, the forces brought to bear in the uncoiling of kinetic energ y involved in driving a tiny white ball 475 yards down a fairway have left Woods with recurring back problems that have at times left him unable to compete at all for several long stretches, even requiring surgery prior to an eventual return to form. Tiger’s short game has remained comparatively consistent over the years though, which brings us to the news of an innovative putting attraction opening later this year at the UTC Mall on University Pa rk way. The Landings and the “new” normal By Karl Maggard Is it really “new”? Like many of you, I am a bit tired of hearing about the “new normal.” By my reckoning, some of the “new normals” don’t feel new at all. But one of the manifestations of the changes of the past year and the pandemic is the phenomenon of working from home. Clearly, many people have been working from home for years. Just ask hard working moms (and dads) who have been raising kids and running their households forever. So, while not new, it has been growing significantly aided by technology that has developed over the last decade or so. The coronavirus forced millions to move out of commercial offices and into their homes to perform their business duties. The question is: will they ever return to their offices? One family member, an engineer who works for Intel in Portland, Oregon, hasn’t been in his office for nearly a year and a half. In fact, he says that his work is not very different now than when he was physically in his office. He often had ‘virtual’ meetings with his colleagues and they were located a few offices away or in other parts of the building. He is not sure he will return….at least as part of a regular work routine. This transition has brought to The Landings several new residents who have moved here from other parts of the country. Over the past few months, while

spending several mornings fishing with my son at the gazebo at the end of the fitness trail, we have had the pleasure of meeting many of these new residents. As many of us know, the gazebo is also a great spot to greet Landings homeowners who have lived here for years. Those of us who have been long term Landings residents (my wife and I for 37 years!), have seen a transition over the years as families have moved on or, as we did, downsize from a single family home to a condo in Eagles Point. The recent change is that many of these new families are modifying their lifestyle and ‘moving the work’ here. One delightful couple we met has recently moved here from Seattle and will continue to work remotely. The same job just done from 3000 miles away. It is a ‘permanent’ change. Another couple moved here just a month or so ago from Rhode Island….to work from home. A third couple moved here and brought their work ‘home’. The Landings is sure to be a beneficiary of this phenomenon. These folks are active, talented, enterprising and will add to our neighborhood’s diversity. It has been a pleasure to meet and converse with them and see them enhancing our great neighborhood. Let’s hope this ‘new normal’ becomes normalized. It will be nice when the Racquet Club re-opens and we can meet many of our new neighbors.

Arts on the Horizon

By popular demand, the month of June is back By Rodger Skidmore Do you remember what you did last year during the month of June? No? You say you draw a complete blank? Well, that’s quite natural as nobody remembers what they did last June -- because nobody did anything. It’s like you did something wrong and your parents sent you into the “timeout corner” for an entire month (actually for more like an entire year, but let’s not get into that discussion). One of the things you probably didn’t do last June was to go see a play or musical at the Florida Studio Theatre. “Theatre” -- as in that thing where you and a bunch of others watch real live people get up on a stage and sing or declaim, or whatever. “Real live people” -- as in people you really don’t know making believe they are some other people you may or may not have heard of, and they are moving about and talking to each other so that you get an idea of what those other people might have been like (this is called “acting”). No, not some people you watch on your TV or your cell phone, but real people who are sad if you don’t applaud their actions when they stop acting. But you do applaud, because it’s so much fun to go out with others (so many others that it kind of fills up a whole theatre, not just one, two, or three people sitting on a couch in your living room) to see this theatre thing. Well, the theatre thing to see at FST starting June 2, at the Gompertz Theatre, is Sophie Tucker: The Last of the Red Hot Mamas. Sophie Tucker was an over-the-top Vaudeville and Broadway star who was really big during the first half of the 20th century. She was the Ethel Merman of the stage before there was an Ethel Merman. Big voice, flamboyant delivery, risqué, and funny. The person who is making believe (or making you believe) she is Sophie Tucker is none other than Kathy Halenda. Ms. Halenda originated the role of Sophie Tucker and has played her in a number of productions of this musical -- to great acclaim. Starting on June 30, in FST’s Keating Theatre, is My Lord, What a Night. This is one of those theatre things concerning two famous people -- Marian Anderson and Albert Einstein -- where you don’t know too much about their personal lives.

Here’s a chance to learn what went on between these two when she, after a sold-out concert performance, was refused a room at a whites-only hotel and stayed the night with this wild-haired crazy-brilliant guy. Want more of a contemporary action musical theatre thing? Then Great Balls of Fire, an FST musical tribute to Jerry Lee Lewis, starting June 15 in FST’s Court Cabaret, is just the ticket. Ticket and other info at Floridastudiotheatre.org.

Making a difference

Every year, since 2004, the Embracing Our Differences show/exhibition/expo/ reminder-that-we-are-all-human-display has come to Bayfront Park here in Sarasota. Admit it, some of those years you did not attend. But you had your reasons, and some of them were good reasons -- you were in Rome, you visited your mother-in-law after she fell and broke her hip, you spent so many hours every day wishing your mother-in-law would break her hip -- whatever. But really, those exhibitions were more than two months long each year. But, OK, so you were busy. A lot of people were not out driving earlier this year, so you can’t say there was too much traffic. But you can say that you were one of those people not driving and that’s the reason you missed this year’s show. And, now that we can skip wearing our COVID-19 masks outdoors, we have a second chance to see this year’s Expressing Our Differences display. All 50 of the billboard-sized paintings and photos are being placed in a field on Regatta Island out in Benderson Park, next to I-75 (parking is available). Beneath these giant paintings are quotes, many from Sarasotaarea students. “A country will recognize its potential only when it recognizes its people”, a quote from Luan Hau Man, a 12th-grade student from New Delhi, India, rests below the painting Punto de Partida (Point of Departure) by Moises Ramos of Jacksonville. Those words certainly are food for thought. And speaking of food, Regatta Island seems like a great place for a picnic. Also a great place for one person to silently wander around, for two people to thoughtfully discuss what they see, or for a family to read what people from all over the world think

about people from all over the world. Some quotes from prior years: “Dr. Seuss NEVER said ‘One fish, two fish, white fish, white fish.’” “I m ay b e homeless but I’m NOT LOVELESS.” “I like me, but I’m glad everybody isn’t like me.” “Pain caused by SILENCE is often worse than pain caused by words.” Find directions to Regatta Island and learn how to have a student’s quote entered into consideration for next year by visiting embracingourdifferences.org.

Next stop, the moon?

The Legacy Biking, Hiking, Walking Trail started in 2008 with a 12-mile section of an old unused railroad line. As more people used it, the Sarasota County Commission took the hint and extended the plans. Now, the northern extension of the Legacy Trail should link up with the Appalachian Trail so that one could go all the way to Maine (our Canadian Snowbirds are demanding extensions to Montreal and Toronto). Around Tampa there will be a short eastern spur to permit stopovers in Disney World outside of Orlando and the southern end will stop at Key West.

No bridge to Cuba is envisioned -- that would be a bridge too far. OK, maybe not that big a trail, but big and getting bigger. Currently the northern terminus is off McIntosh Road, just north of the Culverhouse Nature Park east of Prestancia. However, three extensions are simultaneously underway that will take the trail all the way north to Fruitville Road with a short spur to the west taking one to the southern tip of Payne Park, right downtown. It’s interesting to follow this construction path which continues along the old rail line. When viewing all of this on a Google map, one can see that the old tracks continue north of Fruitville all the up to University Parkway at Route 301. That is where the line continues up to Bradenton’s Riverwalk Park and across the Manatee River on an old railroad trestle to Palmetto. Going to the south, the trail officially dead ends at Venice Avenue, but actually links up with the Venetian Waterway Park which does a nice loop down to Caspersen Beach. Connector routes are ultimately taking it all the way down to North Port and Warm Mineral Springs. W hen t he pla n ned exten sion s a re completed there will be 30 miles of trail with 15 bike- and/or car-parking locations. An estimated 290,000 people used the trail in 2019 and 409,000 in 2020.

A Polk County social worker was upset wit h a movi ng company she and her husband had hired after workers on the truck informed her they were unable to accept a check the woman had offered in hopes the workers would unload the family’s belongings and be on their way. After their refusal she decided to force the issue by prostrating herself in front of the truck’s wheels wh i le holdi ng her 18-month-old infant in her arms. The Sheriff’s Department was subsequently called and officers had to physically drag the woman from beneath the sem i, after which she was promptly arrested. Now, Pol k Cou nt y She r i f f Grady Judd has never been one to mince words. He once famously answered a reporter’s question about why his officers had fired 47 times at a fugitive who had shot one of his deputies by saying “...because we ran out of bullets.” He has mellowed considerably since those days, but still he couldn’t resist putting his spin on this latest incident at a recent press briefing. “She has a college degree with a designation of ‘child welfare scholar,’” he said, raising his ha nd to h is cheek i n a spoton Jack Benny impersonation. “Did you hea r me? Making the grade

Of all the amenities this area has to offer, perhaps the most important during the past year has been one I hope you didn’t need to avail yourself of, though I suspect many of you might have or at least know of some who did. I’m talking about the laudable level of hospital care available here in our little corner of the world. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently rated 4,500 hospitals nationwide on five criteria: mortality, safety, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care. Only about 10 percent of those hospitals received the highest rating offered: five stars. And get this -- three of them happen to be located right here in our own backyard: Sarasota Memorial, Doctor’s Hospital, and Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. World-class beaches are great. A nd f ive-st a r rest au ra nt s as well. But hey, in times like these, great hospitals and all dedicated professionals who staff them are perhaps the greatest blessing this area has to offer.

Parking paradox continues for Sarasota

Captain Ahab had his white w h a l e . To m B r a d y h a d E l i Manning. And Sarasota’s City Commission has paid parking. For as long as I can remember, the cit y has st ruggled – unsuccessfully – to operate a pa id pa rk i ng pla n t hat even comes close to covering the costs to administer it. And the red ink seems destined to continue for

the foreseeable future with a new hit to the balance sheet added recently. Commissioners agreed last month to continue through year’s end a program begun last spring w it h t he on s e t of COVID -19 that provides no-fee outdoor dining permits to downtown restaurants. The permits removed at least 36 prime downtown spots from the city’s parking inventory, setting them aside for restaurants to use for al fresco dining. But of course, that meant they wouldn’t be able to generate parking revenue for the cit y, revenue which not only funds the parking department’s dayto-day operations but a portion of which is earmarked for paying off parking bonds issued to fund the spate of downtown parking garages built during the past several years. The estimated added losses for the “free” parking permit extension? It’s $130,000 for 2021. This comes after the original i n s t a l l at io n o f p a id m e t e r s downtown a decade ago ended i n a n epic f lop with cit izens and business owners showing up at commission meetings in the immediate aftermath of the rollout wearing bags over their heads; one commissioner even suggested the meters be taken to a local gun range where citizens could take out their frustrations by blowing them to smithereens with shotguns. T h e c i t y t o o k a $ 5 0 0, 0 0 0 h it t h at go -a rou nd w it h t he manufacturer refusing to offer more than pennies on the dollar for their return. The next go-around in 2018 went better, but red tide and t hen COVID-19 t u r ned wh at were perhaps overly optimistic revenue expectations to begin with into complete pipe dreams. Year-to-date, the city has lost between $123,000 and $150,000 on its parking program, according to report i ng by t he Sa rasota Herald-Tribune. And that’s before t h e $130,0 0 0 “f r e e -pa rk i ng ” continuation is added in.

The bees work their magic and honey never spoils. Its low water content dehydrates bacteria. Plus, honey contains acid including hydrogen peroxide - also inhibits bacteria growth. If it crystallizes, just put the jar in warm water. — Naples Daily News, “Ask Marilyn”.

HONEY, Peanut Butter Truffles

Ingredients: 1/4 cup oats 1/2 cup unsweetened peanut butter 1/4 cup honey (can use 3 Tbsp for less sweet flavor) 1/2 tsp vanilla Pinch salt (if your peanut butter already has salt, skip this) 2-3 TBSP dried shredded coconut

Instructions: Pulse the oats in a blender for 30-45 seconds till it becomes a powdery flour. In a bowl stir together peanut butter, honey, vanilla, salt and oat flower. Then, roll the peanut butter mixture into 1-inch balls. Roll each ball in dried coconut to coat. Place truffles in the refrigerator. Chill for at least 30 minutes. Serve cold. Store truffles in the refrigerator. (Makes 15 servings).
