A Generous Combination: Blanco Grandchildren & Starbucks A Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation Story By Karl Maggard One doesn’t usually associate grandkids and coffee with one another. But in this case, there is a strong relationship: generosity! The three children in the photograph (Isa, Alex and Anna) are the grandchildren of Landings/Eagles Point residents, Carol and Paul Blanco. They were visiting Sarasota from New York with their parents, Fiona and James Blanco. They stopped in to visit the Blanco’s friends and our neighbors, Marian and Walter Kristlibas in Eagles Point. I received a call from Marian saying they would like to do-nate to the Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation (LHCF) and help support the chil-dren who are battling cancer. Many Landings residents are aware of this charity and our efforts over the past six years to help children who have cancer. We also support three other charities which aim to help abused and grieving children and families. In 2020, the LHCF bought holi-day gifts for over 150 kids and their siblings. The need for support increases each year and, due to the generosity of Landings residents and retailers, we have been able to continue to satisfy the demand. We were delightfully surprised when the Blanco children arrived with $82.00 in cash to donate to the LHCF. I would like to think that the first thoughts that all young people who have an extra $82 would have is to donate it to charity. But, that’s what the terrific Blanco kids did. We are so grateful to these generous and thoughtful children and their parents and grandparents. Talk about raising children well! Starbucks has become a significant partner in

supporting the Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation, along with Publix, Apollonia Grill, Rooms to Go, Wells Fargo and other Landings businesses. In 2020, our Landings Starbucks ‘adopted’ 12 chil-dren for whom they were able to obtain holiday gifts. Starbucks shift supervisor, Karen White (shown in photo), is a hard working individual who believes strongly in our Landings’ charity efforts. For our 2021 campaign, which officially kicks off this fall, she is engaging other Starbucks locations in the area and has committed to gift donations from Starbucks customers for 50 children! Since most chil-

dren get 5-6 presents from LHCF, that means Starbucks customers will generate approximately 250-300 gifts and toys for our kids. In order to make the program work smoothly, Karen makes individual “tags” iden-tifying each gift and child. In turn, Starbucks customers buy that gift for that particular child. We are so grateful to the Blanco children, Karen White, Starbucks, their customers, and all of our other supporters as we look forward to our fall kickoff and an-other successful year helping our kids! See, grandchildren and coffee are alike in this case: very generous!

PALMER RANCH

We have already noticed that many of our snowbird residents have begun to move north. Wishing all a very enjoyable and healthy summer. By the time our snowbirds return we should be able to resume full activity, and group events. The only thing that might negatively impact that timeline, would be people refusing to get vaccinated. All adults are now eligible, so please get your vaccine if you haven’t already. The south gate was affected by lightning in April and the decal scanning electronics were seriously damaged. The cost of repair would have been more than the cost to upgrade all of our scanning devices at the three gates. The equipment has been ordered but it will take several weeks before it will be installed and new decals can be issued. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by closure of the incoming south gate while waiting for the new equipment and during repair. Our upcoming LMA Board meeting is on May 6th. If you would like to attend by zoom, please send an email to me at nfpconsultingresources@gmail.com for the link. At our upcoming meeting we will hear updates on the kayak storage proposal, landscaping issues, south gate status and repairs of the bridge on the trail by the Treehouses and Cloisters. Our thanks to Dick Bayles for all of his work related to the website and technology. Several residents have stepped up to the plate to learn more about our technology and assist Dick as he transitions responsibilities to others. Our “Eagle” Committee is looking at ways to improve our great newspaper. If you have ideas for stories, are willing to contribute content, submit photos, or be one of our reporters or columnists, please contact our committee chair, Gordon Garrett at ggarrett1313@msn. com . When you begin to travel again, take a photo of yourself in a special location with a copy of the Eagle for our section “The Eagle Has Landed”. Also, please let businesses you see advertised in the Eagle know that you saw their ad next time you visit one of

their establishments. Ads are what allows us to have such a great community newspaper. Have you been looking for good vendors (electricians, painters, remodeling, carpentry, house cleaning, plumbing, air conditioning, etc.)? Check out the LMA website for recommendations from your neighbors. Are you looking for contact information on a Landings resident? The only up to date listing is on the LMA website. Want to review LMA documents, rules, forms, etc.? Yes, all are available on the LMA website: http://thelandingsofsarasota.com. Please check out the association pages on the website. Do we have your board and officers listed accurately? Reminder: Your association page can be used to share your documents and other calendar, events or notices with your members. Just have your President send us the information and we will post it to your page. Safety is a major concern of LMA. Please drive, walk or ride you bikes carefully in the Landings, and please report speeders to the main gate. Wear reflective vests and carry a flashlight when walking at night. We continue to rotate the location of the radar and now have video that identifies those violating our speed limits. Just a reminder, if you are going to be away during hurricane season, please bring lawn furniture, grills, and portable plants/pots inside. Storms can cause these items to go airborne and potentially cause damage to your property and that of your neighbors.

LMA Meeting Notes LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky began the Zoom meeting by announcing the following during his president’s report: • Olshansky is hopeful that when seasonal residents return in the fall full activities and group events will resume normally. He encouraged all residents to get their vaccinations. • This is the first meeting everyone wa s con ne cted on zoom, i nclud i ng board members physically present in the racquet club. As a result, technical and sound issues of the past should be eliminated. • Ol sh a n sk y i n for med t he b oa rd several nature trail proposals may be discussed at this meeting as well as kayak storage proposals. • A change in website servers last week caused a temporary loss of access to The Landings website. It is now up and running again and many new additions have been added. The website is the only source of a continuously updated directory of residents. • Residents are encouraged to examine their associations web page and notify LMA of any errors.

FINANCE REPORT

Treasu rer, Ga r y Ku r nov repor ted finances $7,800 below budget due in part to lower monthly expenses primarily in landscaping, roads and maintenance. The new invoice process experienced a few hiccups, but seems to be working more efficiently. The new process is being monitored regularly. Publix and Benderson commercial properties are among several outstanding accounts. Direct contact is being made with them to facilitate timely payments. Certified letters have been mailed to all holders of delinquent accounts. Kurnov also reported The Landings maintenance transition is progressing with a few minor challenges and the audit process is nearly complete.

MANAGERS REPORT

Landing’s Manager, Steve Brockenshire reported the following: • A credit card has been secured to purchase supplies for security guards. • The new maintenance man provided a n ice su m m a r y of h i s f i rst mont h accomplishments. Reports of his work has been positive and complimentary. • Bank card issues with BB&T continue. Brockenshire requested a board member intervene with a phone call. LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky agreed to make this contact.

KAYAK PROJECT

An exploratory committee has been formed to look into adding kayak storage

By Trebor Britt

racks next to the observation deck near the nature trail. This would place the racks approximately 300 feet from the gazebo. The area is wide and long enough to accommodate several storage racks. One of the commercial racks they looked into can accommodate up to 12 kayaks and/ or paddleboard‘s. The committee would survey residents to determine how many owners would be interested in this project. Owners selected by a lottery system would sign a rental agreement to rent a rack for approximately $100 annually. Each owner would assume their own liability for theft or damages. The cost of a water source to rinse boats will also be explored. A motion was made to allow the committee to survey resident interest, ensure county and state regulations are met and then if interest warrants, provide $4,500 for the initial purchase of 2 kayak/ paddleboard racks to be set up next to the observation deck. The motion passed.

intent is to have uniform vegetation in the entire littoral zone. The plant is suited to the wet/dry conditions and salinity of the lake. Once approved, plants will be located and planting dates will be scheduled. The project cost is $1600 and will be funded by the Lakes Committee. • The effort to limit fertilizer/chemical runoff into our lakes is a continuous one. The Environ mental Com m ittee and Lakes Committee have teamed up to remind all landscape contractors of the state prohibition using chemical fertilizers between June 1 and September 30. Re m i nde r s w i l l b e h a nde d out by f ront gate secu rit y person nel to all landscaped vehicles just prior to June 1. In addition, the committee is surveying all lakes to determine what areas, if any, need to implement a “ring of responsibility“ (buffer of vegetation protecting the waterline to limit runoff and mitigate erosion).

LANDSCAPING DISPUTE

ENVIRONMENTAL

Eagles Point Circle Association (EPCA) is of the opinion that LMA is responsible for landscape maintenance of a large area adjacent to the villas parking spots. Until this dispute, the EPCA had taken responsibility for this area for 30 years and LMA has maintained the islands. EPCA’s landscaper claims the disputed a rea is LMA’s respon sibi lit y a nd is refusing to maintain it without additional compensation. After discussing the issue and walking the property in dispute with EPCA, LMA did not agree that LMA was responsible. LMA just received a letter from an attorney representing EPCA requesting LMA agree to take over landscaping responsibility of the area and respond within 20 days. The letter sights a document they are using to justify their claim. Olshansky will request a copy of the EPCA contract to see if the area in dispute is included in their scope of work terms. After much discussion a motion was made to respond to the letter stating the issue is under review and will be taken up at the May 6 board meeting. The motion passed.

LAKES

3

Committee chair, Jeff Smith reported the following: • The lake five fountain filter will be cleaned soon. • The Lakes Committee is scheduling delivery of materials and contractors for the lake one erosion mitigation project. It is expected to start in late September. • I nput h a s b e en re quested f rom Association Presidents bordering lake nine for the plan to plant native “Black Needle Rush“ on the mud f lap that appears during the dry season. The

Committee chair, Maralyn KaufmanDavid, Ph.D reported the following: • Landing’s residents Jaki Becker, Marilyn Kaufman-David, Shawn Moren, and Mark Thompson participated in the Sarasota Bay Watch Phillippi Creek Marine Debris Cleanup on March 21, 2021. Sarasota Bay Watch is a grassroots, nonprofit, citizen-based organization dedicated to preserving and restoring Sarasota Bay through education and h a nds- on com mu n it y i nvolvement. A total of 2094 pounds of debris was collected. The debris consisted of 1390 pounds of trash, 554 pounds of treated wood/ply wood, a nd 150 pou nds of recycling material. • The Environmental Committee is participating in the Kayak Committee initiative to provide a kayak storage/ launch area in the Landings. • A request was made to the Safety Committee that they consider areas of safety concern on roadways while pla n n i ng the repavi ng project. One suggestion was to provide a stop sign in each direction at Landings Court and Landings Boulevard to force traffic to stop before going around curve where pedestrians may be walking or crossing. Also, modifying the island on Landings Boulevard between Landings Terrace and Kestral Parkway South so there is enough room for a car and pedestrian/ bicyclist at the same time. • The committee met with Jeffrey Smith and Mike Knupp to review the status of the nine landings lakes. All lakes were assessed for improvements or concerns which included, ring of responsibility, maintenance, and environmental issues like erosion, algae, and tennis court surface runoff.

DRAINAGE

Committee chair, Roger Kidder reported the following: • Mike Knapp, Jim Stewart, Jeff Smith, Bill Whitman and Santec Engineering have all visited the spillway on lake one within the last month. A gigantic Brazilian Pepper tree is growing on top of the cement structure and a rotting fence surrounds it. The emba n k ments sur roundi ng the spillway show serious erosion. LMA will likely assume the cost of removing the pepper tree. Ben Quartermaine of Santec is going to contact the county to discuss their responsibility to repair the erosion by installing new rip rap.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Chairman Michael Knupp reported the following: • Jim Goldman was welcomed as a new member of the committee. • A La ndi ngs resident ’s ent r y deca l has been suspended for 30 days due to nu me rou s sp e ed i ng v iol at ion s. E nt r y through the north and south gate has been blocked for 30 days. • The LMA Board has also suspended the driving privileges of a guest for 30 days. This suspension has been referred to the Suspension Hearing Committee for review and adjudication should the guest want to appeal the Boards decision. The Suspension Hearing process is a requirement of Florida Statute. As it relates to guests and vendors, if the Hearing Committee upholds the Boa rd s su sp e n sion, t he g ue st w i l l b e prevented from driving any vehicle in the Landings for 30 days. • The committee is working with the Roads Committee to ensure pedestrian safety as the engineer works on the roads and drainage assessment and improvement plans. • The committee reviewed a proposal from Amazon that would g ive drivers 24-hour access to the property without notifying the main gate for their entry. After discussion, the committee decided against it and decided not to forward the proposal to the LMA Board.

ROADS

Committee Chairman, Elida Ramberger reported the following: • A contract was sig ned with Santec Engineering. • Dra i nage a nd pedest r ia n sa fet y concerns were discussed at a meeting with Santec Engineering. Survey work for the upcoming re-paving project is expected to begin sometime in April. The design phase is expected to begin in July. • A j oi nt m e e t i n g w it h t h e S a f e t y Committee addressed pedestrian safety concerns. Problem roads and intersections needing attention were noted.

Racquet Club News | LRC President’s Report  Spring has arrived. You can always tell that it’s springtime when the Masters is on TV, the flowers begin to bloom and many of our winter residents begin to make their migration back north. T he ot her spr i ng i nd icator i s t he European clay court season, leading up to Roland Garros. It’s one of my favorite stretches of tennis and the places they play sound like the Grand Tour of Europe – Monte Carlo, Istanbul, Stuttgart, Belgrade, Munich, Estoril, Geneva, Rome, Lyon, Madrid, Strasbourg – with the ultimate goal of the French Open in Paris. What a trip that would be, sitting in café’s dri n k i ng coffee (or wi ne), havi ng a croissant, dusting off your high school French – and then headed out to watch the tennis. If you’ve not watched the Pro’s play on Tennis Channel this spring – I encourage you to do so – it’s a heck of a lot better than constant Covid updates – and to watch how they cover the court reminds us all of just how good, we all used to be! Getting to Know the Artists at The Landings

Allison Shapira: A multi-talented singer who grew up at The Landings By Marie-Louise McHugh During a Heron Way Happy Hour in January, Richard and Betty Greenspan came accompanied by their daughter Allison Shapira who was visiting them. As any proud father would, he told us that his daughter was a professional touring folk singer in the “Joan and Joni” group, two women singing Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell songs. Allison agreed to sing a couple of songs for us and introduced herself as a “failed” opera singer. Well, there was no “failed singer” in what we heard. Her truly beautiful and warm voice was a delight to listen to and she promised to sing again during a later visit. She had to return to work and manage her career as a singer as well as her business during this Covid-19 pandemic. Her performances had all been canceled and she and her singing partner were preparing for online concerts —not a small feat these days! Sitting down with her for a talk recently, she explained that she is also running an international business. She is the founder and CEO of Global Public Speaking, LLC, a communication training firm. She had to cancel all her travels to Europe, the Middle East and Asia and switch to online meetings that are more challenging than in-person appearances. As a young girl, Allison was determined to become an opera singer. Her parents moved to a Tree House in The Landings so she could attend the Booker High School of the Visual and Performing Arts. From there she went to Boston University where she majored in Vocal Performance. Disillusioned by the prospects of an opera singer’s career, she continued her studies at the Harvard Kennedy School for a master’s degree in public administration. She also became a member of the National Speakers Association. While working as an adjunct lecturer at the Harvard Kennedy School, she wrote “Speak With Impact: How to Command the Room and Influence Others”, a best selling book in her field. Still, music and singing were always on her mind in one form or another. In 2011, after a 10-year break from performing, she bought a guitar and started singing Joan Baez songs and writing her own. Her first CD entitled “Coming Home” was released in 2012. Then Allison moved to Washington DC to establish the Global Public Speaking company. She also joined the folk music community of the Washington DC area. There she met Kipyn Martin, an award-winning singer/songwriter in her own right, and they started performing together and touring as “Joan and Joni” (as a tribute to the Music of Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell) During a recent stay with her parents, Allison gave a little concert on Heron Way for the Landings’ residents. Her beautiful voice and the breadth of her range (she, of course, is a trained opera singer) was absolutely wonderful. She sang folk songs, opera airs and her own compositions. Allison still lives in Washington DC but the Covid-19 Pandemic has made her rethink how and where she plans to live and work. Right now she is working on arranging some opera songs for voice and guitar, as well as composing her own new songs. As Landings’ residents, we can all be proud of and appreciate all the artistic talents among us. Thank you Allison for sharing your music with us.

Large selection of fresh seafood. Special Orders Welcome!

I really like this family business. Just fresh good food, especially excellent fish and seafood. If you want quality, simply cooked to order fish and sides, this is it. My favorite key lime pie in town, too. So glad I found this little place a few years ago. Clam chowder is really nice, too.

Feeling crabby? Come on down and enjoy our fresh crab cakes. You can order them three different ways! 1. Crab cake appetizer 2. Crabby BLT sandwich 3. Crab cake dinner! Then to finish it off with a piece of homemade key lime pie.

Keeping Water ‘Blue’ for Birds and All Aquatic Species

Digging this deep-dish out of the past.

By Maralyn Kaufman-David, Environmental Chairperson (in collaboration with Lakes Chairperson, Jeff Smith, and past-Lakes Chairperson, Mike Knupp) Let’s keep the lakes, waterways, and bay blue … not green this summer. Do you know how? Do you know the Sarasota County regulations regarding fertilizer? A seasonal regulation is coming up that helps minimize pollution of our own lakes in The Landings and the waterways that flow through our lakes. Every year, from June 1 through September 30, Sarasota County prohibits the use of any fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus. This regulation is intended to mitigate the amount of fertilizers and pollutants that are washed into waterways by heavy summer rains. The nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers can create harmful algal blooms that kill aquatic life. Indeed, the

fertilizer regulation for the rest of the year (October 1 - May 31) is use of only fertilizers that contain at least 50% slow-release fertilizer. These regulations apply to both commercial lawn care/landscape companies and private homeowners. As a homeowner doing your own gardening, what can you do while fertilizer is prohibited? • You can green up your lawns with iron products that contain micronutrients. • You can improve your soil with compost. • You can use Florida friendly plants that can withstand the season s a nd need less or no additional fertilizer, water, and pesticides. • You ca n leave t he g ra ss clippings on your lawn. • You can keep your grass longer during these months (mowing short stresses grass making it vulnerable to pests, drought, and disease). A s a h om e ow n e r u s i n g a professional landscaping company, what can you do to ensure our lakes stay healthy? • You can ask your provider if they are aware of this June 1 September 30 ban on fertilizers. • You can ensure your provider is complying with the summer

With Abel’s Ice Cream’s amazing tenth anniversary celebration behind them, it’s time to look forward. This is the wonderful time of the year when the owners of Abel’s, Jerry and Jill Williams, get the opportunity to brag on their student employees who are graduating as part of the Class of 2021. “We are so thankful for our incredible staff,” Jerry Williams said. “I think I say this every year, but we have some of the best kids with the brightest futures. We constantly get comments and reviews extolling their great attitudes and service.”

Williams enjoyed allowing us to share a bit about his graduates. McKenzie, who plans to attend Florida Atlantic University and major in Business Management, loves Abel’s Chocolate Raspberry Truffle (Craving the ultimate chocolate fix, this flavor is a light raspberry flavored rich Chocolate ice cream with raspberry ribbon and dark chocolate mini raspberry cups...happiness awaits!) She recalls fondly her first day of training when thirty of her family members came in to support her, causing her

Adriana’s favorite Abel’s flavor is Coconut Almond Fudge (Sometimes you feel like...tropical coconut ice cream with fudge ribbon & whole roasted almonds.) and is headed to Florida Southern University to pursue her degree in Neurological Pediatric Physical Therapy. Samantha loves Purple Daze (Hopefully this Jimi Hendrix inspired flavor will make his fans proud. Book: The Outsiders but I love lots of books Color: Green Movie: Dead Poet Society Favorite Food: Spaghetti Least favorite food: Tuna What animal would you be if you could be one? Dogs because they have it really easy! Favorite song: “Dumb” by Nirvana What is the best thing your family has done together? All of my family is funny so we always have dinner and a good laugh about something. Do you think homework is necessary to learn? For some, it’s beneficial. If it’s busy work, then no. What is the nicest thing you have done for someone? I had a friend with insomnia in middle school and stayed up talking to her on the phone. What do you like doing in your spare time? If you could tell everyone in the world one message, what would it be? Do what you love now because you don’t have a guaranteed tomorrow. Pursue what you love because money isn’t going to make you happy. A lot of people are stuck in dead end jobs. They live with so much regret. What would you like to be when you grow up? I’d love to pursue acting. Who is someone in history that you’d like to be friends with? Amelia Earhart because she is fascinating. One word that describes you: Driven Are you involved in any clubs? No, there is not a lot going on with COVID. Greatest thing ever invented? Printing press Tell me about your theater work. I do on-camera work. Rollin’ With Rawhide? Think Twice About Your Dog Chews of Choice. By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect Offering both exercise and entertainment, chewing is a natural and necessary activity for your dog. It allows pups to maintain strong jaws, clean their teeth, and it can help them alleviate anxiety and boredom. For yea r s, rawh ide h a s b e e n a popular chewing option for dogs, but unfortunately studies have shown it to be unsafe. Created from a cow’s inner hide, traditional rawhide is stripped of flesh and hair, and treated with chemicals like arsenic and formaldehyde. It’d be bad enough if your dog was just chewing on this, but often they’re swallowing it too. Rawhide chews are difficult to digest, expand in the stomach, and can cause a blockage if too large. It’s time to move on from rawh ide a n d r ol l w it h a h e a lt h ie r c h e w i n g choice. Ready? We’ve got some excellent alternatives.

Go Natural

A s you m ig ht e x p e c t, a l l-n at u ra l selections are the safest and healthiest chewing options for dogs, with a litany of benefits. Made from all parts of the animal, natural chews aid dental health, stimulate chewing instinct, are 100% digestible, and serve as a natural source of glucosamine. Plus, there are a number of great natural chews available, so your pup never has to get tired of the same ol’ same ol’. Here are few of the terrific natural options available. Bully Sticks – Made from pizzle— an all-natural product similar to beef tendon or dog jerky—dog’s love the taste and texture of these long-lasting chews. The density and texture of bully sticks are ideal for safe chewing and teeth cleaning as they soften with use. Plus, they’re suitable for dogs of any size or

developmental stage. One note: they can carry a bit of a smell, so opt for odorless varieties. B e e f Tr a c h e a – Ye p…it ’s a c ow ’s windpipe. Primarily made of cartilage, beef trachea is high in protein, low in fat, a nd filled with chondroit i n a nd glucosamine that promote joint health. Highly palatable for pups of all ages, beef trachea is another natural chew that’s great for cleaning teeth. But if trachea turns you off, don’t sweat it. Beef tendons sourced from the Achilles are another excellent option with similar benefits. Ears – Also cartilage based and protein rich, ears are durable and can improve joint health. A variety of animal ears make for popular choices, such as cow, la mb, ven ison, a nd pig. However, it should be noted that pig ears contain a higher fat content than the others. Fish Skins – An all-natural, simple, single ingredient treat, fish skins are made from exactly that. To turn them into chews, skins are dehydrated until they reach the consistency of jerky. From there, they offer an outstanding source of lean protein and useful Omega 3s, and help support teeth and gum health. Hooves, Horns, Antlers and Bones – While similar in texture and consistency, not all hooves, horns, antlers and bones are created equal. Yes, many of these allnatural choices offer a lot of benefits, but there are some watchouts. Ea r t h A n i ma l No-Hide Chews a re made with only simple, real, and trusted i ng redients. They are easy to digest and never include additives, bleaches, formaldehydes, or synthetic chemicals. They are a good, long chew that isn’t just tasty for your dog, they also promote healthy teeth and gums. Marrow bones, harvested from cow or bison, are another nice source of minerals and nut rients. However, you’ll want

to opt for raw bones as cooked bones often splinter, and keep them frozen for maximum freshness. La st ly, n at u ra l ly- shed de er or el k antlers present a long-lasting alternative with a soft outer layer that dogs enjoy. Though they rarely splinter, it’s important to note that tough antlers can cause teeth damage if they’re the wrong size or dogs are left unattended to chew too agg ressively. We suggest keeping an eye on your pup, and choosing pre-split antlers that allow dogs easier access to nutrient-rich marrow. Yak ’s Milk Che ws – Our final allnatural option, yak’s milk chews offer big protein, easy digestion, are free of grain or gluten and available in a variety of sizes. If your dog needs a break from meat-based chews, yak’s milk can be a nice change of pace.

A Little Extra Effort

Hopef u l ly t hese a lter n at ives h ave convinced you to go natural. However,

even if you do decide to remove rawhide or plastic chews from the equation, the reality is no chew is without risk. Monitoring your dog’s chewing routine can assure their safety and help you gain a greater understanding of their needs. Additionally, before making your selections, pay attention to where the product is made. As always, we recommend purchasing products made in the US to ensure the use of quality ingredients and proper manufacturing standards. Like other efforts to keep our dogs happy and healthy, it really comes down to doing just a little extra to help them achieve their best lives. About the Author: Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect, has a passion for educating pet parents on the power of nutrition and how it can improve their pet’s lives with proper food, supplements, and treats. With over 17 years of industry experience, he has helped change the lives of thousands of pets.

The Landings Homeowners Association held its regular board meeting on April 8, 2021 at the Landings Racquet Club. The board approved removal of trees on Peregrine Point Drive and Peregrine Point Circle W with no replacements required. It denied removal of a tree on Peregrine Point Drive. The board also approved fences on Pine Harrier Circle and Flicker Field Circle. It reviewed the proposed plans for a substantial addition to a home on Peregrine Point Circle E and gave preliminary approval to the addition subject to submission of final construction plans. An owner on Flicker Field Circle submitted a conceptual landscape plan calling for substantial work on the front and rear of the residence. Several concerns were raised and more discussion with the owner will be held. The next regular meeting is at 7:00 PM on May 13, 2021 at the Landings Racquet Club. If an owner wishes to attend the meeting, advance notice is requested (via e-mail to whitman@cs.com). Masks are required and social distancing must be maintained.

camera work and what she could create with it. With the help of online courses, she developed a way to use photography in her own very creative way. Wit h Pho t o shop a nd o t h e r similar computer programs, she started composing images which led to a calendar of sea women of the Outer Banks. This was a fundraiser for a local Art Council. She also wrote and illustrated two cookbooks: “Kitchen Memories”— A Legacy of Family Recipes from Around the World— and “Food ‘N’ Fun: Kids in the Kitchen”. Her most important project to date was inspired by Artemisia Gentileschi, an Italian baroque painter of the 7th century. Anne picked 36 local women who made and are still making a difference in their community: “WOMEN WARRIORS, 12 Women of the Past, 12 Women of the Present, 12 Women of the Future” for a show at the Dare County Arts Cou nc i l. A n ne h ad a v i sion for each photograph depicting either a historically influential woman, an important woman of the present day or a young woman who is starting to make her mark in her community. She displays each photograph with a written history about its subject. Some of the backgrounds she uses are interiors of palaces or other interesting settings. For a sea woman she photographed, she built a long skirt made out chicken wire and sea shells. This is really stunning work. At this time Anne Parsons is working on a coffee table book about the “Elizabethan Gardens”

to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of this North Carolina institution. The photographs feature children and women in costumes in the four seasons of the garden.

#1 SHOPPING DESTINATION ON TRIP ADVISOR! Silver City Sarasota was chosen best Silversmith/Goldsmith in Sarasota for 2021. What makes this store so unique? As you walk into the store, you are always greeted by the friendly staff and you automatically feel the family-like atmosphere. The staff “is family”, according to Monica, owner, of Silver City Sarasota. Debra and Suzanne have worked for Monica since its inception 15 years ago. Arlene joined the family three years ago. Ask any of the staff and they will tell you how much they love working at the store. “The big chain corporate jewelry stores hold no appeal for this generation, Monica, owner of Silver City Sarasota comments. Our customers like the warmth and care we offer. Walking into any larger retailer you can never seem to find the same sales associate you met the first time. Reading the reviews on both Trip Advisor and Google confirms this fact. You will find compliment after compliment not only on the beautiful jewelry, but on the awesome customer service the staff offers.” The main attraction for this retailer is the trademarked “Siesta Key Watercolor Gemstone” collection. The inspiration came to the retailer because as Monica realized, “Tourists always wish they can somehow take their vacation memories with them”. With this in mind, Silver City Sarasota designed the Siesta Key Watercolor GemstoneTM. They were able to capture the colors of Siesta Key’s blue/green water and put it into a quartz gemstone. The Quartz gemstone is a fusion of the tropical colors that surround us. Just looking into the clear beautiful gemstone will transport you back to our island of paradise representing our sea, sky and the beautiful sand of Siesta Key Beach. Each piece is designed by them with a beautiful variety of designs both in sterling silver and 14k gold. Silver City Sarasota also carries a collection of jewelry made with actual Siesta Key Beach Sand. The simple elegant collection is their second-best selling item according to Monica. Giving back is also at the heart of the staff of Silver City Sarasota. They felt the need to help Mote Marine Aquarium after the difficult bout of red tide in our area in 2018. They took it upon themselves to invest their own finances into designing, creating and trademarking the “Tide Away” Save Our Beaches Collection. 25% of the proceeds from this collection go directly to fund Mote Marine Aquarium’s red tide research department. It’s no accident that this gem of a store has been chosen by locals and tourist alike as Siesta Key’s #1 “must stop” shopping destination. They are located in the Southbridge Mall shopping center at 6539 Midnight Pass Rd, Siesta Key. Visit their beautiful website at:

Lastly, there are 80.5 million mothers of all ages in the USA. There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it.

No Matter Your Age, You Always Need Your MOM! By: Dee Ricapito In ancient mythology - The Greeks paid annual homage to Cybele, the mother figure of their gods, and the Romans dedicated an annual spring festival to the mother of their gods. Then in the 16th-century England, “Mothering Sunday” was inaugurated. A day for visiting and bringing cake to your mother. On the second Sunday in May, we celebrate “Mother’s Day”. Thanks to Anna M. Jarvis who wanted to memorialize her mother who died in 1905, and vigorously campaigned for a national day to honor all mothers in a prayerful way. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill designating that the Second Sunday in May be a legal holiday dedicated... “to the best mother in the world, your mother”.
