The Landings Eagle - July 2024

Volunteers Make the Difference

For over a year, the Eagle has highlighted the many roles that volunteers play in our community and the people who make it happen. It is amazing how so many give of their talent, time, enthusiasm, and knowledge as volunteers in our community. It is impressive how so many residents contribute to make our community the special place we all love.

Several things come to mind when I think about what volunteers have accomplished on our behalf. The roads project required enormous input from a cadre of volunteers who contributed their engineering, finance, communications and project planning knowledge to the project. As the project comes to an end and we see the

Many professionals strive for a work-life balance in which they can prioritize career growth and personal enjoyment. Landing’s resident, Ed Redding, accomplished this dream early in his career at Nabisco by sharing his experiences traveling abroad with his wife and children.

Ed grew up in Brooklyn, New York and served in the U.S. Navy after high school during WWII. When he returned home, Ed attended St. John’s University where he played Varsity Basketball. Ed graduated from St. John’s with a degree in marketing, and then received an MBA from Hofstra University. Many years later, he received an honorary doctoral degree from St. John’s, and notes that he is the only basketball player to ever receive it.

After college, Ed started working as a salesman at Nabisco, launching his 40-year career in new product development. His

results of their efforts, we all thank Elida Ramberger and her committee for their oversight and the direction they gave for this huge project.

Parties, happy hours, games, lectures, kayaks, bike excursions, fishing lessons, clubs and special events do not happen automatically.

We are fortunate that LRC and LMA have volunteers who plan and execute the activities that bring us together and provide us with special entertainment. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Paige Packman for her leadership of the LRC social committee and Jackie Massari who has stepped in to spearhead many communitywide programs under the LMA umbrella.

Last month we highlighted

career is highlighted by the creation of Chips Ahoy, which he quickly elevated to the number two cookie in the world. Nabisco then sent Ed to the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University, which opened the door to opportunities to travel abroad. First, Nabisco sent Ed to England for four years. His wife Ella, and five children, Judi, Ed, Ken, Suzi, and Jennifer accompanied him. The family then relocated to a small town south of Brussels, Belgium where Ed was responsible for European operations. He returned to the United States with a new role as President of the International Division of Nabisco.

In 1983, Nabisco became the overall sponsor of men’s professional tennis in the United States, and Ed worked closely alongside them. His job responsibilities expanded a few years later when Nabisco became the overall sponsor of the PGA Tour. In his new role, Ed had the opportunity to attend any professional men’s tennis or golf events worldwide.

At this point, he and Ella were empty nesters, so they traveled across the globe to Grand Slams and professional golf tournaments.

the Nature on the Bay program that was a great success and involved many of our residents and guests. Volunteers like Darka Hawrysz and her large committee put in a lot of time and energy to make the program such a success.

Many of us do not realize how many volunteers it takes to oversee the beautiful landscaping within The Landings and the upkeep it takes to keep our lakes healthy. Paul Weiner has been the chair of the LMA Landscaping Committee and Judy Smith has overseen landscaping for the LRC. We also have volunteers who oversee security within the community led by Judy Greene and her committee.

The community LMA website is in the process of

Their year would usually start in Australia for the Australian Open, then they would stay in Palm Springs, California and tour 3-4 golf events on the West Coast. Ed and Ella would then return to New Jersey for 5-6 additional golf tournaments before jetting off to Paris for the French Open. Lastly, the couple would attend Wimbledon in England.

During this time, Ed would attend all the meetings for the Men’s Tennis Council.

Although the traveling was exciting, Ed felt more fortunate for his ability to share a part of his career with Ella and the close friends he made along the way. Ed retired from Nabisco in 2000 and has enjoyed spending time in The Landings. Ed notes this is the second time The Eagle covered him for a story- the first time being when he and Ella moved to The Landings in 1986! Ed and Ella started as snowbirds but quickly fell in love with the area and made The Landings their permanent home.

Ed served on the Board of the Condo Association in the 1980s and spent much of his time playing tennis at The Landings and golfing at The Oaks Club. He continues to watch golf avidly and notes two of his

being upgraded. The many features on the site, such as the directory, documents, policies and forms you may need, have been made possible by many volunteers in the community. This effort is also being handled with the help of volunteers on the technology committee which is chaired by Eddie Goldstein. And when it comes to volunteerism, who can top the time, hours and years of commitment that Dick Bayles has provided to our community.

We have over 20 distinct condo and homeowner associations within The Landings, each served by a board of volunteers. So many have stepped up to take leadership positions within their associations.

This newspaper, the

favorite players are Nelly Korda and Scottie Scheffler.

Last month, Ed celebrated his 98th birthday surrounded by his wonderful family. Ed feels lucky to live close to three of his children. His daughter, Judy, lives just a few doors down in The Landings, and Ed and Suzi live nearby in Sarasota. Ed loves spending time with his children and grandchildren and notes he has become quite the fan of Taylor Swift and Caitlin Clarke!

Ed also notes his good health and how his condo association believes they have a “blue zone,” a part of the world where people live exceptionally long lives. There are seven people older than 95, and Ed believes it is “all because of the good life at The Landings.”

Throughout his life, Ed understood the importance of a work-life balance. He took the time to explore his interests in marketing, tennis, and golf at Nabisco, and shared his unique experiences with his loving family. When looking back at all he has achieved, to put it simply, Ed feels “very lucky.”

Eagle, is also overseen by a committee of volunteers who have recruited residents to submit regular columns or the many who have contributed articles, photos or input that has made the paper such a popular and important service provided by LMA.

If you are new to The Landings or are looking for opportunities to volunteer in your community, contact the Eagle, any board member of the Racquet Club or Landings Management Association. We can always use more volunteers.

Most important, we can all be thankful for the many volunteers, past and present, who have made our Landings, such a special place to live.

President’s Report ByJeffSmith

Dear Neighbors,

How about that epic rain event on June 11? There was nearly ten inches of rain in a 24-hour period and a record hourly rainfall of 3.9 inches!

I am happy to report that The Landings withstood the onslaught and avoided the major flooding that surrounded us. In what seemed like an instant, our lakes went from record low water to overflowing!

A problem spot for us is Peregrine Point Cul de Sac/Treehouse Lake. The current drainage structure cannot manage sustained torrential rain without localized flooding, and we are working on the problem.

The area is being surveyed and we will be presented with options to remediate what has been an ongoing issue. Sarasota County will need to play a role in the final solution. This is because there is a huge flow of external water that is funneled into the North Lake (on the LMA website in the Lakes and Drainage Committee page, you will find a video showing the force of this inflow during the height of the storm). Water from the North Lake is piped directly into Treehouse Lake which then can overflow its banks in extreme situations. The problem is that North Lake, a county responsibility, has been filled with sediment and needs to be dredged. The county has a plan in place (labeled “Proctor and 41”) that has been on the shelf for going on three years. Given the County’s glacial pace of progress on the plan, we as a community will need to more forcefully push the County Commissioners to action.

Yet another observation from the event is that our new roads drained extremely well during the once in a 200-year event. Speaking of our roads, our roads chairperson, Elida Ramsberger, will be announcing the successful completion

of the “Roads Restoration Project” at the July 11 Board Meeting. This is a time for Elida and her committee to take pride that the countless hours they have devoted to the project have been rewarded with such a positive outcome. On behalf of The Landings Community, we thank you.

A final note on the “Roads Restoration Project” is that at the same meeting, our treasurer, Hans Hawrysz, will give a final report on the financial aspects of the project. You can expect good news as the project will come in significantly under budget. This is a very meaningful accomplishment given the money involved and the fact that this was, and will likely be, the largest project ever undertaken by The Landings. Here again, we give full credit to Elida and her committee.

The Security Modernization project is on schedule. A database is being assembled and software engineers are building our site. You will soon begin to see physical activity at the gates as electrical conduits are installed to support the new equipment. Installation can be expected in late July. Resident training should phase in during July and will continue as long as necessary.

Note: training will be available to our snowbird residents returning in the fall. The transition from our current system should be sometime in late August. The North and South Gate replacement is a parallel project within the Security Modernization initiative. We have now received three bids and are in the due diligence process to decide the best vendor. The Security Committee will then make its recommendation to the board. Note: all bids are well within the financial ability of the reserves that have been set up for this purpose.

The Security Modernization Task Force has set up an email address for residents to contact us and receive

a prompt reply. securitymod.lma@ thelandingsofsarasota.com.

A weekly update email like those you received from the Roads Committee will be sent by the task force as well. The updates are expected to start directly after the July 11 board meeting.

A reminder: an extensive and continually updated Q&A article has been prepared concerning all aspects of the Security Modernization Initiative. It is available on the Landing’s Resident Web Site and can also be accessed by emailing your request to the Security Modernization email address.

Thank you to all the volunteers undertaking these and all the other initiatives underway at The Landings.

Time to party with all Landings families!

Want to enjoy a day of fun, food and games? Once again, The Landings Children’s Club in conjunction with LMA/LRC is hosting our free, annual “Back to School Island Party” on Saturday, August 17, from 1-4 at the LRC pool. Join us!

This event is open to all Landings families. You are all invited to share in the camaraderie, food, and games for a sun-filled (hopefully) afternoon. It is a time to say goodbye to the lazy days of summer, but most importantly, an opportunity to say hello to new families and reacquaint with others.

There are pool and outdoor games planned, as well as an opportunity to enjoy the tennis courts and meet our wonderful professional tennis coaches. Per LRC rules, a parent must accompany his/her children in the pool area.

We understand that the number of children in The Landings is increasing, so we hope that you will take this opportunity to meet/

greet other parents and provide an opportunity for your children to make friends with some new peers. Mark your calendar and plan to be there. Please register at Landingskids@gmail.com or sign up in the LRC office. If you have

any questions, please contact Rose Goncalves, rvagoncalves@ gmail.com, who is once again spearheading this communitywide, free event.

Rose would love some volunteers and helpers for this event.

This is a great time of year to focus on improvements to our club facilities with so many of you traveling during the summer. This is exactly what was done. The club launched our Poolside

replacing the roofs in both the fitness center and the Poolside room.

Club activities continued in June with many members still playing tennis, enjoying the pool, and playing poker, RummiKub, and

and looks amazing.

We are sorry to have to announce that because of a major outbreak of COVID-19 at The Landings, all indoor activities at the Landings Racquet Club have been cancelled until further notice. This includes the scheduled return of the Landings Artists Art Show. We have a new date for this event: Saturday, February 11th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Same artists and same set up in both the Lakeside and Poolside Rooms.

We had or annual Memorial Day BBQ on Monday, May 27. Eightyeight people were in attendance including 16 military veterans. Thank you to our volunteer chefs, Jeff Smith and Marcos Viltres, for cooking the burgers and hot dogs for everyone. I’d also like to thank Carolyn Friday and Gil O’Brien for all their help in the kitchen before and after the event. Finally, thank you to Richard Greenspan for manning the check-in table.

Memorial Day is easily one of the most challenging days of the year for me. It wouldn’t be possible without volunteer help from the kindhearted members. Our next BBQ will be on September 2 for Labor Day.

Our summer of capital improvement projects is moving along. The Poolside Clubhouse and Fitness Center roof replacement projects began in mid-June. That is a major undertaking that will hopefully be completed by midJuly. The kitchen project in the Poolside Clubhouse is complete

The same contractor began updating the Lakeside Clubhouse bathrooms in the last week of June. That should be completed by early July. We also have two A/C units on their last legs getting replaced soon. The one that cools the original part of the Fitness Center is 17 years old and the one in the Poolside Clubhouse is the only one that hasn’t been replaced since I arrived back in 2006.

In August, we will begin the annual tennis court resurfacing. Like we do every year, two courts will be offline at a time until all eight are pristine again. The goal is to have the project done by the end of September. If Mother Nature cooperates with us during the project, we should have no problem achieving our goal. With only six courts playable at any given time, I strongly encourage players to make their court reservations in advance regardless of the time of day they wish to play.

News From the Court ByAdrian“Mo”Moghina

I am very excited to watch the Olympics this summer because Roland Garros will host the tennis competition. In the last 20 years, tennis has produced more and more great tennis players from all parts of the world. Countries like Belgium, Norway, Greece, Poland, Spain, El Salvador, Canada, North Korea, Japan, Tunisia and Kazakhstan have given us some of the best players in the world.

I’m going to be especially excited to watch the doubles event because my favorite player to watch (Carlos Alcaraz) is playing with Rafael Nadal. Every point you watch Carlos play, you might see the best point you have ever seen. He is so talented and creative. For example, he has made the drop shot one of the most spectacular shots to watch in the modern game of power tennis.

Although both Carlos and Rafa volley exceptionally well, I will expect them to play a lot of unconventional doubles points. They will sometimes stay back

at the baseline and use their powerful forehands to set up the points and finish the points with their forehands. When playing from the baseline and it’s their turn to serve, if they plan correctly, they will just about never have to hit their weaker groundstroke, their backhand.

When Carlos serves from the deuce side of the court, because he is righthanded, he can stay back and hit his powerful forehand from that side of the court as many times as it comes back to him. He will win that battle almost every time.

When he serves from the ad side of the court, Rafa will be in front of him at the net playing in the Australian formation. Carlos now will simply slide over to the deuce side of the court after his serve to be able to hit his big forehand again and again.

Because Rafa is left-handed, when serving to the deuce side all he must do to hit his forehand repeatedly is to use the Australian formation. When

he serves to the ad side of the court he can stay back after he serves and hit his powerful forehand. Basically, when it’s their turn to serve they will both be trying to use their forehand groundstrokes as much as possible because that is their biggest weapon.

I think this kind of strategy and positioning should be done more by the club players. I will encourage our league doubles teams to use this strategy especially when the server is not comfortable coming to the net to volley.

It will be interesting to see what other playing formations the players from all around the world will be using at the Olympics this year.

We will have a Wimbledon and Whites social round robin on Friday July 5 from 9:30-11 a.m. followed by a Wimbledon watch party with strawberries and cream, scones, and mimosas.

Security Report

There are four incidents to discuss. They are:

1. Trespassing/Vandalism: 12:21 a.m. May 30, three male teenagers were seen on surveillance climbing over the North Gate with the intent to vandalize a residence (by stuffing toilet paper in the tail pipe of a car). At 12:32 a.m. the roving security patrol drives to the area but does make visual contact with the trespassers. However, at 12:32 a.m. the three individuals were surveilled exiting The Landings by scaling the North Gate indicating they were prompted to flee noticing the security presence. Police were summoned and it appears that one of the individuals may have been known to the household. Because they felt threatened by the incident, the household requested and received the images and video that we had on file.

2. Property damage to Main Gate barrier arm: The morning of June 4, a “Euro Tech Service” vendor tailgated, struck, and damaged the barrier arm. The S/O on duty obtained identification from the vendor and the company has been billed for damages.

the resident gate. The video/tag reader malfunctioned and did not record the incident. There was no visual at the main gate of the vehicle exiting nor is there currently a tag reader at the exit to confirm the vehicle exited. The resulting lack of information allowing an effective police response is not acceptable and we were fortunate that there appeared to be no problems associated with the breach. The unfortunate incident is nevertheless an opportunity to understand how our security officers will be supported and community safer once the security Initiative is completed.

a. All equipment will be the latest technology and will be dependable. Securiteam is under contract to maintain and update all equipment.

b. The tag reader at entrance will at once display the license plate of the vehicle to the S/O (we will have access to software that will link the license plate to the individual who has registered the vehicle).

c. The video at the entrance gives description of the vehicle (and driver under most circumstances).

d. Police are summoned at once by either the S/O at the gate or by Securiteam monitoring.

e. All gates have tag readers to monitor vehicles exiting.

3. Property damage to North Gate barrier arm: Sunday afternoon of May 19, a delivery driver tailgated and damaged the barrier arm without stopping. Images/video identified the driver, tag and delivery company. A police report was filed and LMA is billing/collecting from the company involved.

4. Trespassing/property damage: A serious breach occurred Saturday afternoon of June 8.

A black Volvo intentionally entered through the Main Gate resident lane by driving through the barrier arm. The vehicle had originally been in the visitor lane but became impatient, backed up and proceeded through

f. North and South Gates can be placed in lock-down (swing gates will be able to be activated from the guardhouse).

g. Exit of the vehicle now only present through main gate where the police can be present.

h. Text alert capability to all residents should the situation merit. The capability can be used in any type of emergency. Shouldyouhaveanyfurtherquestions about the Security Modernization Initiative please contact: securitymod. lma@thelandingsofsarasota.com.

Great Sandwiches

Once again, this year, nearly a hundred Landings residents gathered to honor our veterans for a Memorial Day dinner. This event served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served our country. Many of those service members (16) were gathered in our midst.

A rousing chorus of voices sang the tunes we all know and hold dear, in homage to those among us who served in the five-Armed Services. “Over Hill, over dale, as we hit the dusty trail and the army goes rolling along,” celebrates of course, the Army.

“Anchors away, my boys, anchors away,” was for the Navy. “Off we go into the wild, blue yonder,” belongs to the Air Force. And perhaps the most memorable of all, the Marines’ “From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli.” And lastly, “So here’s

the Coast Guard marching song, we sing on land and sea.”

Red, white and blue decorations livened the room. The ambience was warm with camaraderie and respect as attendees shared their stories and their memories of loved ones who served in the armed forces.

Longtime resident, Ed Redding at 97, was the oldest surviving veteran at the dinner. He is surpassed in The Landings, however, by Morrie Savren, who turns 100 this month. Ed enlisted in the Navy during WWII and taught seamen the “Victory backstroke” to help them survive if

their ships went down, as many did. The patriotic event was the 16 th that LRC director Kevin Lechlitner has organized over the years. He both led the touching musical program, and provided the delicious BBQ spread. LMA president Jeff Smith was the grill meister, along with a new LRC staff member. And a coterie of grateful club members aided with the décor, the food, and the cleanup. It was truly a fitting show of gratitude to all the men and women who have given so much for our country. Day Tripping

I must admit, I am terrible in the heat! While many of my friends and neighbors are enjoying the tennis courts, golf courts, biking or gardening, I am at the beach at 7 a.m. or walking with my cooling neck towel hoping to return before 9 a.m.!

When it comes to shopping, forget about it! During the cooler months I love strolling around the tropical atmosphere of St. Armand’s or downtown Venice. The many art galleries, jewelry stores, gift shops with locally made items and small independent fashion boutiques with the emphasis on Floridastyle clothing and accessories, it’s all lovely. I also love those great outdoor eateries!

Nope, I simply can’t do it in the heat, and why bother when all I want to do is sit and eat ice cream! Sarasota is not gifted with the great shopping areas like the east coast of Florida. Now, both Sarasota Square Mall and Siesta Crossing are going the way of many older malls with developers planning for a multipurpose use including housing.

I do find solace at the UTC Mall and have spent hours wandering in and out of the many independent and chain stores. Forget about the Apple Store where my seemingly dumbest questions are cheerfully answered by one of their great young knowledgeable gurus! I’m always fantasizing about the new devices I’ll buy next year!

The mall is open from 10 a.m. I know that pedestrians walk daily for exercise early in the day.

Do check out the website for updated information about time and coming events: https://mallatutc.com.

The best choice for me when I have the time is the large International Plaza in Tampa, one of the major shopping hubs since 2001. This mecca mall features over 200 high end national and international brands and great dining options.

Window shopping at Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, RH, Rolex and more is a great way to spend a day and beat the heat. The mall is also convenient if you are taking a flight out of TPA since the airport is very

close. Check out all information about the mall and events: https:// shopinternationalplaza.com.

For a real adventure, shopaholics should visit the Aventura Mall, 174 miles and 3.5 hours away!

It’s located between Fort Lauderdale and Miami and has over 300 shops making it the third largest mall in the U.S. I’m talking five department stores alone, three floors, and close to 50 eateries, and many great art offerings! Aventura Mall’s arts and culture program distinguishes the company from other developers. Its world-class collection incorporates a range of media, including sculptures, installations, and architectural designs by renowned international and local visionaries. There is even a two-level Apple Store and a 24 screen AMC Theater!

Aventura Mall also takes the mall walking experience to the next level with weekly “Guided Mall Walks” on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 9 a.m. These guided walks provide a structured approach to mall walking, where experienced fitness instructors will lead you on a 45-minute route throughout the mall, offering motivation as you work towards your fitness goals. To participate, meet on the upper level near Apple every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. Wait, there’s more! Inside the mall on the weekends, you’ll find the Aventura Market.

The largest indoor market in South Florida, The Aventura Farmers Market has shown local love to South Florida farmers and artisans for more than 20 years. Representing the region’s talented culture melting pot, it showcases a diverse array of exotic foods, fresh produce, desserts, handmade goods, accessories, home decor and more. Worth the trip for an overnight or short getaway. Dress up when shopping here!! For upto-date information check: https:// aventuramall.com/. A

SECOND

This was our second visit, this time with family from Minneapolis near Christmas. WHAT a perfect delicious dinner on all levels! My daughter's family, very discerning food critics, said the Dungeness crab was equal to the best they had in Latin America. They inhaled their supper with gusto!

We love the more natural low key atmosphere and the close proximity of the staff to the dining area. This helps them too in observing guest experience, valuable feedback.

The fresh fish selection of approximately 8-10 varieties is impressive and well represented with truly delicious options. We had their fresh steamed clams in butter — small super fresh and so sweet. Even saved the broth to make homemade Italian clam marinara later! And their crab cake was amazing.

The "maraschino cherry" of our perfect dinner was their EXCELLENT key lime pie, home made by them, served with genuine whipped cream.
