The Landings Eagle- October 2024

Page 1

Ever since he was a boy growing up in Cincinnati, Paul dreamed of being a pilot. He envisioned soaring through the air, and he made it happen. He flew cargo transport missions to Vietnam during his six years in the Air Force. For 33 years, he flew Delta Airlines’ latest passenger planes - ultimately piloting their 767-300 aircraft. Additionally, he trained Delta’s next generation of pilots, and Captain Paul says he enjoyed every moment of his lofty career!

J: Paul, how did you make your vision of becoming a pilot a reality?

P: I joined Air Force ROTC while attending the University of Cincinnati and got my pilot’s license. After graduation, I entered the Air Force and began my flying career.

We were the first group trained on the brand new T38 Super Sonic planes. They were challenging and fun to fly!

This month, we highlight a special volunteer in The Landings, Ron Pierce. He is best described as an avid tennis player, entrepreneur, former football, wrestling champion, family man, and volunteer. He is also known for his self-deprecating humor when on the tennis courts related to his “full-size figure”.

If you’ve been on The Landings courts or nearby and have heard someone with a booming voice yell out “butt head, Ronnie”, or “tub of lard” when he misses a shot, its Ron. Or, when he gets a shot that he has to run for, he tells everyone, “I’m the fastest man in my weight class”. When his opponent misses a shot, he tells them it was because they were distracted by “his six-pack abs”. When he gets to a tough shot, he declares “Oh baby”. If his partner misses a shot, he always says sorry, “my fault”, even when he was nowhere near the ball.

While he can be seen daily on the tennis courts, it is what he does behind the scenes that contributes so much to our community.

But first, let’s get to know Ron. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he grew up with two siblings, Patti who lives with her husband Jary in The Landings, and a brother who passed away several years ago. Their father was a mechanic and World War II veteran.

As you will learn later in this article, Ron was a chip off the old block when it comes to mechanical abilities. As youngsters, the family often went camping and on outings to a nearby reservoir where they enjoyed many different water activities.

Ron began to flourish in middle school where he played football and wrestled. He went on to have a distinguished athletic career in both sports in high school. He played guard and his team only lost one game in 5 years. As a wrestler he captained the team that went on to the state

J: Tell me about your experiences in Vietnam.

P: For four years, I flew a propeller transport plane to Vietnam once a month. Between starts and stops it took us three weeks to get there. We mostly delivered cargo but sometimes we had to bring back wounded or deceased soldiers. That was emotionally difficult.

J: Did you ever get shot at while running missions?

P: Only once, in Da Nang, and thankfully they missed.

J: What happened after your stint in the Air Force?

P: I applied for a job with the major airlines. I got my first choice and was hired by Delta. It was an interesting and intense application process.

J: How so?

P: Well, in those days the airlines

OCTOBER 2024

hired mostly ex-military pilots. Over the course of a few days our skills were tested using simulators and we underwent several interviews. The final part of the application process was an interview with a psychiatrist. If the applicant didn’t pass the psychiatrist’s examination, they weren’t offered a job.

J: You obviously passed! So, what did you like about flying?

P: It’s almost impossible to explain unless you experience it. It’s hours of boredom when the plane is on autopilot and minutes of great excitement and exuberance at takeoffs and landings. I absolutely loved it. It was a great job. I never regretted choosing this profession.

J: Let’s divert a bit and talk about your personal life. How did your home life fit into your piloting career which took you far and wide

for extended chunks of time?

P: I was extremely lucky because I married a wonderful woman! In fact, marrying Carole was the best thing I ever did! She was a great mother to our two daughters, a wonderful wife and gave our family stability and lots of love. Since my work required traveling throughout my career, her role as wife and mother was the glue that kept our family together. Carole helped us all to thrive.

championships. It may come as a surprise to those who know Ron, that while in high school he wrestled at the 154 lb. level and weighed 190 lbs. when he was playing football. He would go back and forth each year between those two weights. Today he is much heavier as you can see from the photo.

He graduated H.S. in 1968 without intending to go to college. However, a wrestling teammate told his college coach about Ron, and soon thereafter, Ron was recruited to the school and offered a half scholarship. Upon starting at Waldorf Lutheran College in Forest City, Iowa, Ron was recruited by the football coach who offered him another half scholarship to also play football. His team went on to compete in the college league championships. It was at Waldorf College that Ron met his wife, Karmen. Ron transferred to the 4-year University of Minnesota/Winona. Given his need to focus on academics he gave up playing school sports. Fortunately, between summer jobs and work at the university as a lab assistant, he was able to pay for all his college expenses. He received a degree in education in 1972.

Soon after graduation Ron and Karmen were married. Ron became a teacher of drafting and also coached wrestling, in Racine, Wisconsin. He personally built their home in Racine. It went extremely well with one exception. While working with a saw, he cut off part of his finger. He teases that when people ask him about it, he says he “bit it off eating a sandwich”. He taught for six years and during that time the school system had three labor strikes. In 1978, he saw an ad looking for people who would be interested in the tool and party rental business.

He was able to put together enough money, from the equity in their home, to buy a General Rental operation in

Racine. The business quickly grew and expanded into two locations for a total of 24,000 sq ft of space.

In 1980, their first daughter Tiffany was born followed by Courtney in 1984.

In 1990, Karmen and Ron first visited Sarasota to see tennis friends from Racine who had a place on Siesta Key. For 15 consecutive years, they came down to Siesta and stayed with their friends on the Key.

In 2005, Ron’s sister found (online) a realtor who showed Ron and Karmen all over the region. They ultimately purchased a tree house unit in The Landings. Their realtor was Judy Greene who lives in The Landings. They rented it out for several years and then remodeled it and became snowbirds.

In 2015, they purchased a unit on Eagles Point in the Lakeview Association where they currently reside. They sold their home in Racine and purchased a condo there. Their daughter Tiffany and her husband live in nearby Milwaukee and their other daughter Courtney lives with her family in Las Vegas.

Now that you know his background, it’s time to highlight the fact that he has been a stalwart volunteer in

The Landings. He is captain of the 70’s team, President of Lakeview Association, Past Chair for 5 years of the EPCA Landscaping committee, serves on the LRC social committee, has been one of the organizers of poker, canasta and rummikub. When there is a need for a volunteer, Ron has answered the call.

When asked what he likes most about The Landings, he focused on the people, quality tennis programs, and the location. He also loves that when his out-of-town family are visiting, they are able to walk and ride bikes safely throughout The Landings and nearby.

When asked what he would do to improve The Landings if he had a magic wand, he noted the need for pickleball courts and maybe a snack bar or café.

You will often hear that Ron is one of the nicest guys in The Landings and is always ready to lend a helping hand.

One last splash before school

The annual Landings kids back to school party was held on August 17 and once again, was a great success. The LRC was transformed into a vibrant kid playground for both children and adults. The party is sponsored by the LMA, LRC, and the Kids Club. Colorful decorations were hung on the wall, giant inflatable pool toys drifted in the pool and joyful music rang through the LRC.

It was a great way to welcome the families who had just moved to The Landings.

They learned and saw firsthand what our community has to offer. It was wonderful to take time to mingle with our neighbors and get to know each other.

Strengthening the bonds of our community and fostering connections.

It is always a beautiful sight to see the LRC pool filled with kids jumping and playing under the watchful eye of our lifeguard. Others preferred to lounge and relax by the pool. The LRC was filled with energy, laughter and joy. We had a variety of food and drinks to satisfy

every palate. As usual, the ice cream truck was a big hit. Judy Greene and Tara Lamb, Landings resident realtors generously sponsored “Mr. Ed’s Ice Cream” which provided cool treats for the party.

The Landings Kids Club would like to thank everybody who gladly volunteered their precious time and effort in making this event such a success: The LMA for their financial support, The LRC and tennis team, The Day family for providing the decorations, Rose Goncalves and family for providing the lively music, and coordinating the food and refreshments.

A special thanks to Judy Greene and Tara Lamb Landings resident realtors for sponsoring the ice cream truck.

We hope to have more events like this one for the kids in our community. Let’s stay engaged. We would like to encourage all the families with kids to register for the Landings Kids Club by email at landingskids@ gmail.com. You will receive updates on all upcoming events. See you all at our Halloween festivities.

From the Market

This a cool little spot in a strip mall on Tamiami Trail. There's ample parking and a couple of tables outside under the store rooftop. Inside is a nice dining room and bar seating facing the kitchen. A small "market" with fresh fish and shellfish is located at the rear of the dining room. Very casual. We were in for lunch and there was only one server, but service was excellent throughout and she was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and products like the canned non-alcoholic beverages.

We started with Devon's Lump Crab Cake which lacks any filler as advertised. Basically held together with some mayo and served with a grilled lemon and house remoulade. Delicious! We took two home!

I ordered the grilled triple tail (any fresh fish available grilled or blackened) on a melt in your mouth brioche bun with a little tartar sauce. Excellent!

My wife went with grilled snapper tacos and she was very happy.

Of course, we saved room for the famous key lime pie which was undoubtedly the best key lime pie we have ever encountered.

They have a good wine list and beer selection as well as some interesting non-alcoholic choices! If you're looking for fresh fish, GO!

President’s Report ByBethCotner

September continued our Lakeside room renovation with new paint and carpet. Unfortunately, the carpet that was installed was damaged and is now being replaced by the vendor. We expect everything to be rectified by the end of September. The bathrooms in Lakeside were also redone so please stop by and see what an improvement they make. Activities at the club in August included a tennis round robin and a Labor Day cookout.

Manager’s Report ByKevinLechlitner

The end of the year is approaching and now is the time to throw your hat in the ring to serve on the 2025 LRC Board of Directors. If you are interested, you must submit your name and a brief list of your qualifications to Kevin Lechlitner in the Tennis Pro Shop by December 5. There are three positions up for election at the annual meeting in

January. If we have more people interested in being on the board than available openings, there will be an election at the LRC Annual Meeting in January 2025.

As I am writing this, the annual court resurfacing project is nearing completion. Today is September 17 and we put the lines back down on court #5. Tomorrow we will do the

News From the Court

It’s nice to see familiar faces back at The Landings.

Jen, Sandra and I are looking forward to officially starting the team practices again this month.

It’s going to be an exciting season as we have seen the team members improve their stroke techniques, court positioning, tactics, and strategies.

We will continue to focus on keeping the game simple by understanding when your team is in a defensive situation or an offensive situation.

Our main goals are improving

accuracy to targets, controlled aggressive plays, and execution of shots to be able to create pressure on opponents and to finish the points. Also, we will reinforce positive communication with your teammates which will create a fun problem-solving match experience.

We are so lucky to play tennis which is the #1 sport to play that gives you a chance to live approximately ten years longer.

Our social round robin and pro exhibition will be on Friday October 25 from 2-4:30 p.m.

August 5: The Landings was under lengthy rainfall that had managed to affect several electronic systems.

The automated resident lane at the Main Gate lost the programmable RFID computer and could no longer process incoming traffic. Early on, we attempted to leave the gate shut and manually open it for returning residents. This proved to be frustrating to the residents as many of them would park out-ofsight of the security officer and sit right in front of the RFID scanner instead of approaching the gate arm or making contact.

August 11: Reece Windows was caught soliciting in The Landings over the weekend.

On Monday, their head office was contacted and officially warned for violating our policy.

August 15: Macy’s Landscaping was warned to be out by 5 p.m. They have complied since.

August 17: Waste Management garbage truck collided with the South Gate entry arm.

The temporary camera did not catch the footage of the impact.

August 28th: During a heavy rainstorm one of the outside boxes of the Main Gate leaked through the wall and poured water over the entry computer’s power cord which caused it to short out. The entry computer is now operational by using the computer’s 2 nd power cord. The second computer’s functions have been moved to the entry computer so at the moment, it’ not a pressing issue.

Many of the challenges in August were related to the weather. A lot of these problems should be solved when the Propertia (Securiteam’s software partner) upgrade occurs.

Though we should take care to make sure all our electronic boxes are properly sealed.

We were very fortunate this year. It is the first time I can remember a resurfacing project going from start to finish without any significant weather delays. We had the perfect amount of rain a day or two after dropping the clay which helps firm

Court Championships

Come one, come all!

We have so many new residents living in The Landings who may not know about our traditional event - The USTA NATIONAL FATHER/SON TENNIS TOURNAMENT being

It is a spectacular 6-day tennis event which represents Nationally ranked players coming from all over our Country. The games begin with the Ultra Seniors (father in their 80's) on Tuesday, Nov 19th, Super Seniors (70's) on Wednesday, Nov 20th and the Seniors (60's) start playing on Thursday, Nov. 21st.

This year we will prepare a joint luncheon for all the players and their families on Thursday in the Lakeside Clubhouse. We ask for Landings residents to please contrib-ute one pot luck dish for the luncheon that is enough for ten people and can be dropped of by 10:00 AM. We also ask for servers, those to help set up, and clean up. It's always fun in the kitchen.

Landings residents can also volunteer as "Ambassadors", who watch match play and root for an assigned team, sometimes from your home State. An ambassador does NOT have to provide housing for your team, or even know how to play the game; just cheer and enjoy the matches, contribute to the luncheon, give an hour of their time -- thus giving the players a very personal feeling that is not present in other tournaments.

Its an event that is free for everyone living in the Landings and all of Sarasota County. Join in, there's no bad seats, the event lasts through Sunday. Finals will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday when the Gold Balls are presented.

For more info on how to participate in this event, please call Dee or Ralph Ricapito at 941-927-6261 or Beverly Austgen: 941-685-0469.

Steins Up; Oktoberfest Coming Soon to Landings!

Mark your calendar for our first ever Oktoberfest on Wednesday, October 30 from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Enjoy a catered Bavarian-themed dinner with German beer and wine sampling.

We’ll celebrate the origins of Oktoberfest that date back to October 1810, when the crown prince of Bavaria (a.k.a., King Louis I) married Princess Therese von Sachsen- Hildburghausen. The raucous celebration has been an annual event in München (Munich)

ever since.

Join us as we create a sense of Landings gemütlichkeit (warm friendship) by raising our glasses (“Prost!”) and dining together. Bavarian-style clothing encouraged. If you don’t have a pair of lederhosen or a dirndl dress handy, a red or blue checkered shirt or peasant blouse will suffice.

Sign-up available in the racquet club. Cost of $27.00 per person will be charged to your account.

Kayaking activities to resume soon

Merrily we paddle along! Or will be soon. As the fall season approaches, we are preparing to get in our kayaks and get out on the water.

We have scheduled an outing to be led by John McFetridge, our erstwhile and continuing kayakouting leader, on Saturday, November 9. Hopefully traffic on the waterways will not be heavy on a weekend date. The exact timing will be contingent upon tides and will be posted on TeamReach as the date approaches. As a reminder, here’s how to access the TeamReach app: download the app, login to Landings Kayaking Sarasota, password=LKS and you are good to go.

Other kayakers who have helped lead groups are Wayne Trotter and Jon Demos. They have offered to volunteer again this year. However, last year Wayne set up a weekly outing that was not particularly wellattended, so this year you will need to tell us what your needs are, and we will try to schedule accordingly.

You may already know that the kayak racks survived with few, if any, problems during Hurricane

Debbie. There was one kayak that was floating near the racks, but I do not know whose it was or whether it was stored on a rack; in any case, it was not tied down.

Dan Callender, a fulltime resident and fellow kayaker has been keeping an eye on the racks and noted that there were lots of weeds impeding access to boats stored on the new racks. Paul Weimer, Landscaping Chair, sent his trusty landscaping crew who weeded and sprayed; all seems to be resolved at this point.

Tina Greenberg does a stellar job of keeping track of the rentals and the waitlist; our current waitlist includes more than 12 requests for berths.

Some answers to recent questions: 1. Kayak berth rentals belong to the owner of the kayak, not the residence of the kayak owner. 2. Rental fees are annual and not adjusted if the berth is rented for a portion of the year. 3. You will be asked in early November if you wish to rent your berth for 2025. If so, you will be required to pay the annual fee of $150 plus tax no later than 12/31/24. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact me!

Big changes coming to Medicare Part D coverage

Significant changes are coming to Medicare beneficiaries that are covered by a Part D Drug plan through a Medicare Advantage plan or as a standalone benefit. In 2025, Medicare Part D Drug plans will have a $2000 catastrophic coverage limit on drugs, after which there will be no drug deductibles or copays for the remainder of the year. By comparison, the catastrophic drug cost limit in 2024 is $8000. The coverage gap affectionately known as the “Donut Hole” has also been eliminated for 2025. Insurance carriers expect to pay higher Rx costs due to these changes and are responding in several ways.

The 2025 Medicare Part D plans will have different benefits than 2024, and some plans will be withdrawn. Expect more plans to have a deductible on medications, particularly the costly higher tiered drugs. Some plans will increase Rx copays and change

the copays on certain drugs to a percentage cost instead of a fixed dollar amount. Stand-alone Part D plan premiums are expected to increase in 2025.

Medicare Advantage plan designs will also change in 2025. Plans may include annual deductibles and higher copays for doctor visits and hospital stays. Additional benefits such as dental, hearing, vision and fitness will be adjusted. To sort this all out, an excellent resource for Medicare answers is your local insurance broker. They can compare the benefits, plan design, drug coverage, copays, costs, networks, and optional coverage offered in your area.

Landings Resident Profile

J: How did you meet Carole?

P: Well, that’s a fun story. We met at Shipley’s, a college hangout in Cincinnati when I was a junior. I liked her immediately and wanted to date her. Now, I had what I called my “threetime rule.” That meant that I would ask a girl out up to three times. If she refused after my third attempt, I stopped trying. Thankfully, Carole said ‘yes’ on my third ask and the rest is history. We were married after my first year in the Air Force. That was sixty years ago!

J: Where did you live?

P: Most of my career with Delta we lived in the Miami, Florida area. It was a convenient and great place to settle down. When they shut down the Miami facility we relocated to Atlanta.

J: Tell me about your career trajectory with Delta.

P: In their first year Delta puts new pilots on probation. They get paid what we called ‘poor pay,’ which was very little, until we were officially hired as pilots. During that time, to make ends

meet, I did substitute teaching on my days off and clerked at Montgomery Ward at night. Carole worked parttime as well. However, after probation Delta, of course, paid quite well. It was a great company to work for. I never regretted a single day of the 33 years I was with them.

J: How much traveling did you do?

P: For a few years, I flew internationally. Then I chose to fly domestically because I wanted to spend as much time as possible with my family. I would fly three four-day trips a month for a total of twelve days.

We relocated to Atlanta during the last six years of my career where I moved into a senior instructor training role which I really enjoyed. At that point, I was teaching nine months a year and flying for three months.

(While we were chatting, Carole was busy in the kitchen preparing an elaborate six-level birthday cake for Paul’s 83 rd birthday celebration. It was a recipe she learned from Paul’s grandmother, and it has become a family tradition.

She joined us for a few minutes to share her perceptions of Paul, her husband of sixty years.

She said, “Paul is a very kind, funny and generous man. I made a great choice!” She added, “I have had some health problems these last few years and his caring, love and devotion fills me with gratitude.” We tearfully shared a touching moment).

J: Thanks, Carole, for sharing that. Paul, your last flight, which was in 2001, was called your ‘retirement flight.’ Traditionally Delta has a celebration afterwards, honoring a veteran pilot’s final trip. However, plans were interrupted very unexpectedly.

P: They sure were. I was planning to pilot a flight from San Francisco to Atlanta for my final trip. Carole and my daughter accompanied me, and we were going to celebrate my 60 th birthday, which was the next day, on September 12 th . At that time pilots couldn’t fly once they turned 60 so we carefully planned for my retirement flight to take place on the 11 th .

We had a terrible surprise because 9-11 happened on the day of my scheduled flight. So, my retirement flight and party never took place. We couldn’t reschedule the flight because I was then 60 and therefore too old to fly.

J: That must have been a shock.

P: Yes.

J: Paul, you’ve been retired for 22 years now. How have you been spending your time?

P: Playing tennis, investing, traveling a bit, and spending quality time with family and friends. We moved to Sarasota from Fort Myers nine years ago to be closer to our two daughters and their families. We love getting to see them often and especially spending time with our wonderful grandchildren. Three of them have ‘left the nest’ but we see the three younger ones frequently. We also really enjoy living at The Landings.

J: What do you look forward to in your future?

P: Continuing to play tennis, (I’m in an over eighties group), successfully ‘navigating’ my way in the stock market, some fun travel, and spending precious time with Carole and our friends and family.

J: Thank you, Paul and happy upcoming birthday! Enjoy Carole’s luscious cake!

Fishing at the Gazebo

Summertime is the

results in flooding and lots of mud flowing into the intercoastal waterway by the gazebo from Philippi Creek and overflow from ponds in The Landings. The murky waters makes fishing even more difficult. In addition, summertime is also when live shrimp are very small, which makes it more difficult to catch the larger fish.

On a recent outing with Richard Herbst, most of what was caught were small fish that are primarily bottom feeders. While we caught eight or nine fish, they were small and nothing special. See photos below. Richard was boasting that he had never been skunked (caught no fish) when fishing at the gazebo. If you, your children or guests are interested in learning how to fish at the gazebo, contact the Fish Whisperer at NFPconsultingresources@gmail. com.

Double back flip on a trampoline

Everybody loves turtles, but many little adorable baby turtles grow up to become too big and messy for many people to manage. Luckily, the Common, or Stinkpot, Musk Turtle is a great option for those who might not have the room or the budget for giant 100+ gallon aquariums! Where most common aquatic turtle species tend to grow about the size of a large dinner plate, these guys tend to stop growing around four or five inches, meaning they can realistically be housed comfortably in a 20 gallon long (12"x30") aquarium for their whole lives.

Musk turtles are carnivores, so they tend to eat a wide variety of bugs, crayfish, and fish in the wild, but as pets, they thrive on high quality turtle pellets with some yummy treats mixed in occasionally. They are quite smart, so they can easily distinguish between di erent people, and they will certainly know who brings food! Stinkpots are a fantastic choice for those of us turtle lovers who don't want to deal with the troubles of giant tanks!

Typical appearance and behavior

• Stinkpots, despite being water turtles, are not the best swimmers. They do best either in relatively shallow water or deeper water with plenty of things like fake or live plants, wood, and rocks that they can climb to the surface on if they get tuckered out.

Stinkpot Musk Turtles get their name from their ability to secrete a yucky liquid from their cloacas if they get frightened. They do this to make themselves less appetizing to any predator that may get ahold of them. While this trait is very useful in the wild, it is very rare to see in captivity. While they don't bask quite as much as some other species of turtles, Musk Turtles do occasionally need to come out of the water to bask in the sun. This helps them warm up to digest their food as well as absorb UVB rays that help them grow their shells properly. For this reason, it is extremely important to provide proper lighting when keeping them indoors.
