FISH News

ONE LUNCHEON DOWN AND ONE TO GO

Thank you to all the FISH Volunteers who attended the Appreciation Luncheon on February 11th in the Starlight Ballroom. The FISH Board was honored to honor our volunteers. Thank you so much for all you do to assist our residents here in Del Tura. For those volunteers who could not attend, we will be delivering a small gift of appreciation. We had a blast, thanks to our very talented entertainer, Mackenzie Bart and her puppet, Roxy. Mackenzie was in college when she was named the winner of a reality show, “America’s Next Weatherman”. Before her senior year she won the title of Miss Ohio and went on to Miss America Scholarship Competition in 2015. With help from Roxy, they sang, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and won the talent competition. Some said that her talent was bizarre, but I think not! She stole the show! Mackenzie also earned a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) scholarship, which assisted in her education.

After she witnessed the destruction from an EF5 Tornado in Missouri, she realized that she needed to protect others from such a weather event. Mackenzie went on to graduate from Ohio State University with a major in Communications and a minor in Atmospheric Sciences. Obviously, she does not just rely on her very pretty face. She committed her year of service as Miss Ohio by visiting every single

child’s hospital and veteran’s home in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. She continues not only to work at ABC-7 here in Fort Myers, she also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity to support disaster relief and many other community non-profit organizations.

Next up for our FISH Volunteers is another luncheon. This one is from RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteers Program) and is on March 5th at the Broadway Palms Theatre. If you (FISH Volunteer) have not received your invitation by now, please call our Del Tura Administrator, Betty Scheetz so she may get you an invite.

Thank you once again to our volunteers who allow our residents to get to doctor and dentist appointments, go grocery shopping, receive a dinner after being in the hospital, have their fruit trees picked, able to borrow equipment when needed (Do Not Buy!) and help when a love one has passed. You do not have to be a HOA or a FMO member to enjoy FISH’s assistance. Just call us at 997-3474.

Ginnie Benjamins, President

Lee/Collier County Compost Facility Field Trip

By Rosemary Eiden

Compost Has Proven to Help Wonders Several garden club members toured the Lee County Solid Waste Facility this past month. 250,000 tons of shredded debris (like palm fronds, tree and shrub limbs, leaves) get hauled to the facility daily to be made into compost in 30 days’ time. There are only 8 sites in Florida and we are lucky to have one right here in Lee County.

With cured solid waste (the nitrogen portion) and yard debris (the carbon portion) windrow equipment stirs the long rows. Some were actively steaming during our visit. Eighty percent of the finished compost gets hauled to the orchards and spread on the soil. Twenty percent is available and bagged for the homeowner use. I apply 8 bags to my yard per season. 3 scoops can be used in the hole when planting a new plant, it can be spread in the beds where plants are actively growing, then mulch over the top to keep it in place. Plants respond immediately to the ‘black gold’. Not only does it supply nutrients to plants, but it makes the ‘Florida sand’ friable and acts like glue to hold nutrients near the roots. Eventually soil organisms enter the picture to eat up the compost and leave their valuable byproducts. As earthworms travel through the soil they leave air pockets for the roots to travel. It’s a win/win for gardeners, the environment, and of course those beautiful plants. Compost can be purchased for $2.80/20 lb bag. Drive on to the scale, pay, then go in to collect your compost.
