Big plans are put into motion for Siesta Promenade Construction may begin in Spring 2015 for vacant lot located at the NW corner of Stickney Point Road and U.S. 41

By Debbie Flessner

It may not be the first time plans have been made to develop the prime property at the corner of U.S. 41 and Stickney Point Road, but the Benderson Development Company is betting that this time, the plans will stick. Back in 2005, a partnership called Siesta 41 Associates, LLP purchased the Pine Shores Trailer Park and surrounding parcels on Stickney Point Road and U.S. 41, where it intended to raze the trailer park and construct a $350 million mixed-

use project called Siesta Point. The village was to contain up to six condominium towers and dozens of shops, and the partnership group consisted of Cogan Development LLC, Benderson Development and Promenade Partners, which was a collaboration between Cogan and financiers Neil Malamud and Ron Shenkin. At the time, the hope was that construction would begin by mid2006 on the 23.9 acres, but as so often happens with the best-laid

plans, this one did not come to fruition. Eventually, in 2009, the property was razed and prepared for building, and now it finally appears as though that land is on the brink of development. Benderson Development and Siesta 41 have unveiled their plans for Siesta Promenade, a new 250,000-square foot open air shopping and a 150-room hotel, with an estimated construction start of next Spring. Back in January of 2011, the group

met with the Siesta Key Association and laid out their intentions for that very visible and valuable piece of land. At the meeting, Paul Blackketter, Benderson’s project manager, told the Association members that his company would undergo an extensive due-diligence process to determine the best type of development for that site. As it turned out, the new proposed project is actually very similar to the idea originally floated in 2005. Continued on page 8

Fight continues over Beach Road lot Retired real estate magnate Ronald Allen and his wife Sania, a licensed real estate agent with Michael Saunders, are continuing the fight to build a home on a beachfront property at 162 Beach Road bought for $5.4 million in 2009. They’ve since sold one of the two parcels. The remaining land on which they asked to build is valued at $1,047,500 (2014 Tax records) Two months ago, the Sarasota County Commissioners again unanimously denied their request for a Coastal Setback Variance

allowing them to build on the lot. This is the third petition brought by the couple, with the previous two petitions of January 9, 2013 and April 23, 2014 unanimously denied. Land existing beyond the Gulf Beach Setback Line (1979) with no prior history of building, is protected under County Ordinance from development. This lot on the northwest portion of Siesta Key Beach has well documented history of erosion and flooding. On June 16, the Allen’s filed a request with the county for relief from the Commissioner’s decision.

• Code Enforcement: Sarasota County’s John Lally reported that 39 cases have been written up over the past 4 weeks. Most concerned banners, outdoor displays, etc. He said that illegal rentals were absolutely going crazy. Repeated rental issues are being sent to a Special Magistrate who can levy fines of up to $500 a day. On the issue of charging a fee for parking in a private lot, Lally said that a place first has to have a Business Certificate of Occupancy in order to charge fees for parking. It was acknowledged that Siesta Key will probably always have insufficient parking, and temporary permits might be issued for seasonal parking to alleviate the situation. • Sheriff’s Office: Deputy MacGregor said that there had been four fistfights in the parking lot over the weekend, all disputes over parking spaces. Ultimately the 141 additional parking spots that are being created will help defuse the situation, but it’s a while before they will be ready. He added that any additional parking that can be done legally will help. 4th of July there will be additional personnel on Siesta. Many people buy fireworks before discovering some are illegal. (If the label says CAUTION, they are legal. If the label says WARNING, they are NOT legal.) Sheriff’s Office will NOT respond to calls about fireworks going off unless someone agrees to personally meet with the Sheriff. The Sheriff must witness the crime actually taking place. In line with these realities, there have not been any fireworks arrests made in the past several years. As for any citizen noticing suspicious activity on the Key, Deputy MacGregor said to immediately call 941.316.1201, or 911. To report road rage or other illegal driving issues, call 941.365-TAGS. • Fireworks Display: Cost is $38,000. Michael Shay said that SKA had purchased five $150 VIP package tickets from Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce. These tickets will be raffled off. Each VIP ticket entitles

the bearer to 2 adult tickets, reserved parking, food and drink, and a great view of the fireworks. There is a “Keep Sarasota County Beautiful” cleanup scheduled for the early morning of July 5.

Designed to Appeal to Residents And Visitors Alike! Come Visit Us!

Homeless in Paradise By Debbie Flessner

In March of this year, the City of Sarasota shut down a homeless encampment in the city and moved its residents to the Salvation Army for a period of 30 days. What happened after that was something that surprised absolutely no one--the homeless moved on to other local areas. One of those spots was Siesta Key, home of one of the most renowned and visited beaches in the world. As it turns out, Siesta is not only attractive to international travelers, for some, it’s a place where you can get a free handout. “Lance” rolls along the wide sidewalks in Siesta Village in his wheelchair, collecting food, cash and even gift cards from concerned passersby. He was one of the few homeless people who were living on Siesta Key before the City of Sarasota crackdown. But many business owners in the Village fear that letting Lance sit outside the front door, in his condition, may be a deterrent for potential customers wishing to enter. Community leaders and business owners are hesitant to comment on the issue of the homeless in the Village, some for fear of retribution, and others because they don’t want to be labeled as insensitive. But the fact is, Lance, and others who have come to live in the streets and on the lawns of Siesta, are upsetting quite a few people. One of those is both a Siesta Key community leader and a resident named “Steve.” “I’ve seen people stop and give

him food and cigarettes, but those people don’t realize he also urinates and defecates on the sidewalk, in the bushes or wherever he is,” he said. “The fact is, you are enabling the homeless by giving them handouts, and Lance is a prime example of that. He has been approached by countless county offices to offer him assistance, and he turns them down.” Why? Because apparently, he has it much better on the streets of the Island than in a shelter. But while the City of Sarasota has just recently proposed the advent of an advisory committee to help get homeless people off the streets, the people displaced from the previous downtown shelter are filtering out to other places, like Siesta Key. As it turns out, Lance may be the least of the problems for Siesta business owners, when it comes to the homeless situation. A maintenance manager for a large property management company on the Key said that vagrants have not only been sleeping on benches in front of his company’s offices and leaving beer cans and cigarettes, but they have been trespassing around and in their rental properties. “They’re pretty knowledgeable about who is in town (and in the buildings) and who is not--they just wait until nighttime to see who is here,” “Mike” said. “I’ve even caught them having sex on our porches (of rental houses). I said something to them and they just walked on the other side of the bushes and started up again.”

“Mike”, the property management company maintenance manager, said that this abandoned home on Featherbed Lane, in Siesta Village, has a steady stream of vagrants coming and going.

Apparently, it’s not really necessary for the property to be empty to be a target for unwanted visitors. Mike said he had some friends staying in one of his company’s properties and the man of the family was lying on the couch taking a nap while his wife and children were out. In the middle of his nap, a vagrant walked right in the door, telling him that she was just there to look around the place. Siesta Key business owners say they have brought up their concerns to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office at the Siesta Key Village Association meetings, and don’t feel they’re getting the help they need. But part of the problem may well be that instead of just shooing the homeless off their property, they should be putting in an immediate call to the Sheriff’s Office. “It’s important to remember that homelessness itself is not a crime, however anyone trying to solicit funds, causing property damage/vandalism, drinking where

That way, deputies can make contact with the subject, get their identification, check for warrants or existing trespass warnings and take appropriate action.” She added that it’s important for property owners to ensure that the proper trespass warnings are posted-just so there’s no confusion. “There is nothing wrong with politely encouraging people who are trespassing on private property to move along,” she said. “But it’s always safer though to call us and let deputies handle it.” For any questions or concerns about the Sheriff’s Office policies, call the non-emergency at 941-3161201.

Siesta Key Round-Up Siesta Key Village Maintenance Corporation (SKVMC) doesn’t renew current landscape maintenance contract

Citing a “decline in service,” Mark Smith, chairman of the SKVMC, announced that the group is not interested in renewing Championship Landscape Maintenance Professionals’ contract. When Championship, a Ft. Myers-based company, won the contract in 2012, the SKVMC had been impressed with the feedback from some of its then clients like the Resort at the Longboat Key Club. However, that contract has not been renewed either. In a flurry of emails and meetings over the past month, commissioners and SKVMC representatives discussed possibilities for landscape maintenance in the Village for the future. After Championship’s contract is up on August 21, the Maintenance Board was in agreement that a property management company may be better suited to

fit the needs of the Siesta Village district. As the bids are reviewed for a new vendor, the SKVMC will be paying particular attention to including curbside recycling to the contract. Currently, Sarasota County requires residents and businesses to recycle, but there is no curbside recycling in Siesta Village.

Siesta mansion sells for record price

In today’s edition of “The Market Really is Improving,” the recent sale of a Siesta Key home at 4300 Higel Avenue brought in $10.25 million--the highest price paid for a home in Sarasota since 2011. The home is 8,600 square feet and has its own private beach, in addition to a state-of-the-art kitchen, an elevator, Brazilian wood floors and bedrooms with an ocean view. The Women’s Council of Realtors reported that the luxury home market is not the only segment where sales are improving. A total of 1,195 homes sold in Sarasota in April, which was just 28 homes shy

of a record that had been set back in the salad days of 2004. Experts say that in a market turnaround, the lower-end homes are usually the first to recover. Michael Saunders Company, which sold the Siesta Key home, also has pending sales of homes that were listed for at least $7 million each.

County begins project on Siesta Key’s North Shell Road

In a stunningly quick turnaround for a construction project, Sarasota County began a project on North Shell Road, just off Higel Avenue that they anticipate will only take less than a month to complete. The estimated $30,627 enterprise will include 17 parking spaces along the road, which currently has no designated parking spots, and will add six parallel parking spaces by getting rid of a pedestrian sidewalk. Surprisingly, the county expects to be completely finished with the work by July 3. Community residents had pushed for the work to be done, because the

lack of parking during season and busy summer months was becoming a problem. Beachgoers were lining the road, blocking driveways and leaving trash, and other undesirable objects, in neighboring yards. And both the county and North Shell Road residents agreed that the parking problem was becoming a safety issue. The new project should provide some peace of mind for all parties involved.

It’s difficult for many senior high school students to stay on track and keep focused on future career goals.

But for Venice High School senior Monica Gonzalez, it’s a top priority. Gonzalez recently won the William E. Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition, which was hosted by the University of South Florida in

Tampa in April. “I heard about the Schmidt Competition last year through my vocal teacher, Mrs. Rosemarie FreniMolinari,” Gonzalez said. Gonzalez began studying music with Freni-Molinari when she was 14. “When I became seriously devoted to classical singing, she suggested that I compete in the competition,” Gonzalez said. “I competed and won second place in 2013 and came back this year to give it another try before college.” The application process was not difficult at all, according to Gonzalez, but the audition itself was a bit more of a challenge. “Auditions can be extremely nerve-wracking if you’re not prepared — but I was fine,” Gonzalez said. “I love competitions — they are a chance to perform.” The Venice High School senior is majoring in music-voice and found out recently that she was accepted and offered a scholarship to study at Manhattan School of Music. She plans to pursue a career in opera.

County lifeguard hours extended for guarded beaches

Sarasota County’s Beach Lifeguard operational hours were extended on all guarded beaches from 10 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. daily. The extended hours will run through Labor Day Weekend. Sarasota County’s guarded beaches are Lido Beach, Manasota Beach, Nokomis Beach, North Jetty Beach, Siesta Beach and Venice Beach. Beaches that are unguarded and swimmers enter at their own risk are Brohard Beach, Blind Pass Beach, Casperson Beach, North Jetty Beach, Palmer Point Park, Service Club Park, Ted Sperling Park and Turtle Beach.

New noise ordinance for downtown Sarasota set to be discussed in the Fall

At the early June City Council meeting, City Attorney Bob Fournier presented a rewrite of the city’s current noise ordinance, which is

formally called the Sound Control Ordinance. He said the Council had based the rewrite on abundant feedback received from nearby residents. While local musicians and bar/ restaurant owners asked the Council not to make any decisions that would affect their ability to make a living, frustrated residents conveyed their displeasure with trying to deal with the noise levels during what they felt should be quiet times. The noise ordinance rewrite included, among other items, a new “plainly audible” clause, which would allow for a police officer to judge with his own ears which establishment was in violation of the noise ordinance. Penalties for violations of the ordinance would also be more harsh. City Commissioners suggested to Fournier that the codes should be adjusted for land use and zoning, and should take into account extenuating circumstances. After the public hearing in the Fall, the ordinance will be finalized. Continued on next page

McCurdy’s and Wing House open downtown

Downtown Sarasota continued its efforts to become a true evening destination with the addition of two new businesses sure to draw in the crowds. McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre and Humor Institute opened its doors on a new 4,000 square foot location at 1923 Ringling Blvd. A Sarasota comedy staple for 22 years, McCurdy’s was most recently in a spot north of downtown, but expects to draw in even more comedy fans to its more centralized warehouse. In addition, Ker’s Wing House has moved into the building at 1991 Main Street that formerly housed the Half Shell Oyster Bar. The Wing House opened its first location in 1994 in Largo, Florida, and now has 24 sites around the state. The newest location in Sarasota is now the only true sports bar in the downtown area. Local groups such as the Downtown Improvement District are in the process of discussing an expenditure of $1.3 million to improve Main Street, from Goodrich to US301, with brick intersections and better landscaping. The hope is that with popular businesses like McCurdy’s and the Wing House coming into the area, there will be incentive to make downtown even more attractive for the visitors who will be frequenting them.

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to hold public hearing about downtown roundabouts

Plans are about 60% completed for the construction of two 10th Street roundabouts in downtown Sarasota. The FDOT is scheduled to begin work on the $7.1 million project in April of 2017, but will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, July 8th at 5 p.m. at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. At that time, citizens will have the opportunity to review and ask questions about the plans, and all associated documents. The FDOT has attempted to address possible issues with the building of the roundabouts, like allowing entrance to Centennial Park during the construction, as well as halting work during the annual Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix Festival.

Sarasota 20:20 Bayfront project looks to the future

A group led by Sarasota County Board of Directors chairman Michael Klauber is heading up an effort to develop a vision for the future of the Sarasota bayfront and the land surrounding the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center. The group, which also includes members from the Van Wezel Foundation, the Sarasota Orchestra

and the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, has held around 25 meetings with neighborhood and community representatives since March. With a mission of establishing a cultural and economic legacy for the bayfront, Sarasota Bayfront 20:20 also hopes to ensure continued public access to the area. Though the project is still in the early planning stages, support from the City Commission will eventually be required, in order to get a commitment of public funds to help develop infrastructure. In the meantime, the group will continue to garner public support by going out into the community and clearly defining its goals to neighbors.

Big plans for Siesta Promenade

By Debbie Flessner

Continued from cover story

But this time, the economy seems to be cooperating a little better. Requests for building permits in Sarasota County have been booming in the past year, which is definitely a telling economic sign. Though Benderson Development is one of America’s largest privately held real estate companies, and owns and manages over 700 properties in 38 states, its influence on the Suncoast is prevalent. The new Mall at University Town Center, a Benderson Development project scheduled to be completed in less than four months, is expected to be one of the premier shopping destinations in the state. Some neighbors who live close to the proposed Siesta Promenade site have the same worries. “It’s hard enough to get out onto Stickney Point Road as it is,” said Rebecca Pietras, who lives down one of the side streets between U.S. 41 and the Stickney Point Bridge. “Where that mall is going in is a very busy intersection. I’m just wondering if they are going to do anything to alleviate that problem, because it’s only going to get worse when they open up that mall.” Benderson Development has a public meeting on June 26 to address citizens’ Benderson Development has plans to build a retail center and hotel on the site of the old Pine Shores Trailer Park. concerns. The meeting will take place 6:30 p.m. at the South Trail Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 5601 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota 34231 Although this parcel for development is not within the Siesta Key Overlay District (SKOD), it is expected to have a great impact for the District, due to the increased density and intensity of use. The streets in the surrounding neighborhoods are two lanes without sidewalks, and there is currently no plan on record that includes implementing traffic signals or traffic management while the property is being developed. Curt Preisser, of Sarasota County Communications, said that the PreApplication Meeting Request form that Neighbors hope that the County will do something had been filed by Benderson Development to help alleviate the additional traffic that will and which laid out the bones of the project, surely come after the new mall is open. did not include a Traffic Impact Analysis. Off Islands

By Rodger Skidmore

A look at news happening on neighboring islands Over the years there have been many maps produced showing that Blackbeard (William Teach) buried his pirate treasure, around 1718, in or near North Carolina’s Ocracoke Inlet just before he died. Newly discovered information points to buried treasure worth between $10 and $21 million being buried on Longboat Key but it appears that it is not Blackbeard’s booty that is under discussion. In fact, the treasure, according to Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force Chairman George Spoll, has not yet been buried - and, perhaps, may never be buried. He, and Vice Chairman Tom Freiwald, were urging the Longboat Key Town Commission to reconsider, for the third time, burying Longboat Key’s power poles along Gulf of Mexico Drive (for $10 million) or, why not, everywhere on the key (for $21 million). Mayor Jim Brown did not think that the third time would be the charm and that discussing it three times in one month would not bring the job any closer to fruition. Not too many other commissioners thought the discussion would be worthwhile as there just was not enough money in the kitty.

Money, money everywhere

They’ve restored the Statue of Liberty, are getting ready to fix up the Washington Monument, did a bang up job on Ca’d‘Zan, the old Ringling Mansion, and even ensured that the Van Wezel and the Opera House could continue in operation. If something is worth taking care of, the saying goes, you do what you gotta do. In Holmes Beach, the object of their affection is the Anna Maria Island Community Center. It seems that the $22,500 that the city allocates annually for its upkeep has not been enough and, in a June meeting which 200 residents attended, Holmes Beach Commissioner David Zaccagnino said that it’s important for the city to support the center for the services it offers its residents as well as fulfilling recreational requirements for the city’s comprehensive plan. The suggestion is that the city create a special tax district and charge each of the 4,000 properties

$25 per parcel, with the proceeds going into a special fund for the center. This would add $100,000 each year to the center’s budget and the $22,500 could go back into the city’s general fund to be used for other purposes. Almost like free money for the city and the center. Of course if they only charged each taxable land parcel $12.50 it would still double the budget for the center and would “cost” the city nothing since it would be taking money out of the taxpayers’ left hand pocket instead of out of their right hand pocket. Of course one might also ask “Why was the total operating cost of the center so high”. Many of the residents who attended were very glad to answer. As with many non-profits there seems to have been a great deal of mission creep. While the center used to operate with a surplus between 2000 and 2007, the downturn in the economy coincided with the beginning of its losses. It seems that when revenue slowed there was little cutting back on services, scholarships, or activities. Randy Langley, former board treasurer, said scholarships almost quadrupled with many seemingly well-to-do parents taking advantage of free programs. Executive Director Dawn Stiles indicated that greater proof of income and needs have been put into place. Others said that a review of what the center offered and how residents were to pay for them might be worthwhile to determine if everything could be cost justified.

Chuggin’ down a cool one

On Holmes Beach this means chuggin’ down a can of cold diet soda from now on. For years it has been illegal to drink alcoholic beverages on the beach. The problem was that it was not illegal to possess that beer or wine cooler. Pop the top, rub the cold can on your fevered brow, let the condensation drip onto your sunburned arm – fine. Just not legal to drink, said Police Chief William Tokajer. The city commissioners have now fixed what was broke and have instituted a new ordinance banning alcohol on the beach. How or why the original law left such a large loophole is not known but the police no longer have to observe the chuggin’ in person, they just have to see it to believe it. And at $75 a

pop, the tops might not just stay on, but at home. And with the alcohol at home the cans and bottles, which often wind up in the sand, might stay there as well.

A rose by any other name ....

Over the past year a number of Snow and Spring Birds booked rooms at the Longboat Key Hilton Beachfront Resort. When they arrived this month the Hilton was gone. Vanished. Oh, a resort hotel was there, right at 4711 Gulf of Mexico Drive, but it was not the Hilton, it was, and is, the Gulfside Beach Resort. The resort welcomed those guests with open arms but not, it seems, with an open restaurant or bar. Except for those closed items everything looked like a Hilton but for one thing - the Hilton logo was also missing. Andy Berger of Ocean Properties stated that back in January he was told that the Hilton flag could keep flying over the property if renovations started by June 1st. The work had not begun by that time so the logo was removed. Longboat Key Planning, Zoning and Building Director Alaina Ray indicated that a demolition permit has been issued for the project, and once approved the town can expect them to file for their building permit plans soon thereafter. The question then is, what will the newly renovated and expanded (by 85 rooms) resort be called. Will the renovation be up to Hilton Standards? - Will Hilton charge too much for the use of their logo? - Will another brand wish its logo to fly over the new resort? Or will Ocean Properties start its own brand? Given that they already own the Longboat Key Club and have just put in the winning bid for The Colony Beach and Tennis Resort ($2.45 million), that just might be the case. Reservations for the X-Hilton aren’t being accepted beyond June 30th and the hotel will be closed between 16 and 18 months while the extensive renovation takes place.

Siesta Beach Wedding

By Trebor Britt

Michele Kuehl of Park Falls, Wisconsin and Scott Clark of Monticello, Illinois exchanged vows surrounded by family and close friends, at an intimate wedding ceremony held on magnificent Siesta Beach recently. Michele, who works for Family Home Health Physicians and Scott, who works for the State of Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities, met at church. Each of them claims that when they met each other, they sensed something very special about the other person. It was not long after spending time together that they each realized they were “the one”. Scott recalled a most special memory. “I was taking Michelle home for Thanksgiving and introduced her to all my extended family. It was so heartfelt that it seemed as if she’d been a part of my family for years.” Before working for the State of Florida, Scott was an ordained minister. During his time in ministry, Scott also worked with Sun Weddings of Venice. Through that experience Scott had the opportunity to conduct wedding ceremonies at every beach from St. Pete to Venice (and some farther south). He said, “There is absolutely no beach that even compares to the beauty of Siesta Beach. Getting married anywhere else was never an option.” They enjoyed their honeymoon in a fabulous Bedand-Breakfast in Key West. Sun Weddings of Venice, Florida (SunWeddings@ aol.com) provided everything in Michele and Scott’s beach wedding package.

From Animal Rights to Clueless in Seattle

Some Animals More Equal than Others?

I’m old enough to remember when the circus trains would pass through Sarasota on their way to the Ringling winter quarters in south county during late autumn and again in the spring when the red and blue trains – each carrying a distinct, selfcontained touring circus production – would head back out on the road. Residents young and old would line the rail sidings to catch a glimpse of the performers and roustabouts as they’d make their way through town, hanging out the windows as the train would slowly move through. They’d wave and holler their greetings and the locals would reply in kind. It was one of those rare local rites unique to this area that most everyone would embrace. The spectacle of it all was compensation enough for the inconvenience of the traffic delays. When the train would reach Venice there would be a procession of animals and show folks headed from the train depot to the circus quarters a few blocks away. It was a rare chance for youngsters to see real live elephants and other magnificent creatures up close and personal on the streets of their very own hometown. Sadly, those days have passed. Most of the tracks south of town were pulled up long ago to make way for the Legacy Trail. And besides, the circus now winters north of the Manatee River, in the Parrish/ Ellenton area. Still, a kid can always head to the circus itself to see the noble creatures that have fascinated young and old alike for generations, right? Well, maybe not for long. At least not if some animal rights groups have their way. Feld Entertainment, current owner of the Ringling and Barnum Bailey Circus, recently learned they are no longer welcome in Mexico City – the world’s 10th largest metropolitan area. The city’s governing council has knuckled under to animal rights activists concerned about “alleged” mistreatment of circus animals, making the Ringling circus and others like it with animal acts persona non grata. But conspicuously absent from the new ordinance is a similar concern over bullfighting, which is a regular event at the city’s Plaza Mexico, billed as the largest bullfighting arena in the world. Just

a quick reminder here – and this is no mere allegation – the bull never wins, being sacrificed in a bloody spectacle at the end of the matador’s ‘heroic’ performance. Now that’s entertainment...?

SRQ Airport Grounded by Reality?

The management at Sarasota International Airport is turning its gaze from the heavens toward earth with plans announced recently for ground-based capital improvement projects aimed at boosting the facility’s bottom line. This is a “departure” of sorts from the usual method of growing revenue at most airports, namely increasing flights in and out, which locally has increasingly taken on the appearance of Sisyphus pushing his boulder up the hill only to have it roll back down as the summit nears. Retail, warehouse and other commercial enhancements are proposed as a means of increasing economic activity in and around the airport’s prime real estate that is strategically located between Sarasota and Bradenton. The improvements may include moving the control tower to free up space at the desirable northeast corner of the property. One area that will likely not be the focus of too much attention though is the terminal itself, which increasingly has taken on the appearance of a ghost town. While getting a haircut at the nearby Kings Row Barbershop recently, my barber Mary predicted that before long the terminal will likely become the site of a bus station with trips to and from the region’s larger, more realistically named “international” airports. All of which got us to thinking: there’s been talk of moving Sarasota’s SCAT bus transfer station out of downtown; so maybe the airport could add some revenue by making the city and county an offer? And why stop there? Perhaps they could also offer the terminal up as a potential site for the city’s proposed “come as you are” homeless shelter? After all, it’s a public facility, it’s paid for and heaven knows it’s not getting much use these days as far as its intended purpose goes.

Have it Your Way...

Proponents of efforts to raise the minimum wage celebrated last month with news from Seattle that the city will soon require businesses within its borders to pay employees at least

$15 an hour. But before getting too carried away with the joyous news, perhaps proponents of the higher wage standards should consider the impact of another law, the Affordable Care Act, on employment in the fast food industry. As a result of the law’s requirement that businesses provide health insurance coverage for employees working more than 30 hours per week, fulltime positions have dwindled to just two at many typical fast food outlets: a day manager and night manager position. Typically, everyone else is now likely to be part-time, even if they work hard and prove their value to ownership. As a consequence, there are actually less opportunities for advancement in the industry than before the law was enacted. That’s not to say there won’t be winners due to Seattle’s highminded if ultimately counter productive efforts. Companies that sell those new keypad systems that allow patrons to place their own orders without the need for human interaction should score big. But for young workers or struggling adults looking for a foot-in-the-door entrylevel job? Well, remember the slogan “Where’s the Beef?” The new anthem in Seattle may well be “Where’s the Job?”

Meanwhile at the Other End of the Economic Spectrum...

The new University Town Center Mall has scored another high-end tenant to join the ranks of Saks Fifth Avenue, Williams Sonoma and The Apple Store. Tesla Motors, which manufactures high-end electric sports cars for $70,000 and up has pulled a permit to set up shop in the new $325 million mall scheduled to open in October. An added bonus of the new location? The area may serve as a good proving ground for the company’s new battery technology, especially if their designs can make it through the monumental traffic jams at the I-75/University Parkway intersection on a single charge.

On the Trail of the Mysterious and Intriguing Yellow Butterwort...

As reported recently in the Herald Tribune, a rare carnivorous plant known as the “Yellow Butterwort” has been discovered on county owned property near the Carlton Continued on page 28 Reserve.

Waterfront dining has a charm all its own. The scent of saltwater permeates the air. Manatees lumber through sea grass while seagulls caw their raucous song. Pelicans plunge beneath the water’s surface, hunting for seafood delight. An osprey devours its catch on the uppermost branch of a tree, while—in the waters below— you see the gunmetal glint of dolphins. Margaritas taste salty and crisp, and the rumble of power boats is punctuated by the sound of slapping sails. It’s a setting where memories are made. Mother Nature is seated at your table, and her mesmerizing waters dissolve the troubles of the day. Among the dozen or so waterside dining establishments located between Sarasota and Venice, two are particular favorites. The first is the Boatyard Waterfront Bar & Grill located on the mainland side of Stickney Point Bridge, the southern bridge to Siesta Key. Located at Mile Marker # 62, the restaurant can be reached by land or water, and docking is available. Its outdoor patio, covered deck and inside dining room sit higher than most other waterfront restaurants, giving patrons a bird’s eye view of the Intercoastal Waterway. Guests might sip their beverages of choice and savor the view while schools of dolphins swim gracefully just a few feet away. During the summer months manatees are regular visitors. The Boatyard Waterfront Bar & Grill boasts an air conditioned dining room, a covered patio and an outdoor dining deck. The “Reef Bar” has both outdoor and indoor seating, and is a local favorite, celebrating Happy Hour from 2 to 6 pm every day. The outside patio features umbrella-covered tables, while the covered deck has cooling overhead mist-fans. The Boatyard welcomes romance as well as families year round. It is open for Lunch and Dinner daily and will accept reservations. It also offers amazing waterfront banquet and wedding facilities, and can cater to groups of every size up to 300 people. Its experienced staff is happy to tailor special events to meet a client’s individual needs. A wide selection of menu items includes everything from seafood to fresh salads, sandwiches, steaks, chicken and pasta. “Extreme Oysters” are a house specialty: Rockefeller, Millionaire, Key West, Stuffed and more. With delicious entrees such as Jambalaya, Grouper Oscar and Rib Eye Steak, there is something at the Boatyard for everyone looking for delicious, reasonably priced food in a casual waterfront atmosphere. The restaurant is located at 1500 Stickney Point Rd. in Sarasota. (941) 921-6200 www.boatyardwaterfrontgrill. com Casey Key Fish House offers great food and a Million Dollar View. It’s located right on the water at Mile Marker #32 by the Blackburn Point Marina. This tropical waterfront spot has an Old Florida ambiance. Diners arrive by boat or by car. Those coming by land turn west off of Highway 41 onto Blackburn Point Road, cross the “flying bridge” (one of the last remaining rotating bridges!) and pull into the parking lot. Near the restaurant is the famed Casey Key Fish House Tiki Bar, known the world over as Sarasota’s answer to Margaritaville. At the Tiki Bar you and your friends will see boats passing by and yachts bobbing at the dock. On weekends and holidays, the Tiki Bar is energized by live music. Splashes are heard as mullet jump in the water, and the tropical flavors of a Mai Tai taste cool against your tongue. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a heron or a snowy egret. It’s a boater’s world of “No shoes, No shirts, No problem!” The lyrics of Jimmy Buffet’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise” come to mind. The wooden restaurant itself has been painted a gaudy aquamarine blue. The building is low and rambling, and, like most boating establishments, serves a mix of ages and all walks of life. Casey Key Fish House extends through several dining areas, with the choicest spots being down near the dock. No uppity attitude here: daily specials are scribbled on the blackboard, and much of the food is served on plastic and Styrofoam. Don’t let that fool you! Some very tasty dishes are created in that kitchen. Sure, the lunch menu reads simply enough: fish sandwiches, ½ pound hamburgers, clam chowder, battered shrimp, and the like. But after 4pm, an eclectic blend of Asian and American cuisine also emerges, drenched in the flavors of Maui and Thailand. Sesame Crusted Pan Seared Tuna is a personal favorite, to say nothing of Sautéed Chilean Sea Bass. There’s a full bar and wine list that is sure to brighten any meal. Chef Willie Tia’s “Best Bouillabaisse” is downright spectacular! At Casey Key Fish House, proprietor Jimmy Von Huberz and his Master Chef offer a casual way to feast by the waterside. They provide visitors with a relaxed, laid-back setting, and do it all at a reasonable price. The Fish House is open 7 days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., except for most of September. Talk with Jimmy about arranging special parties, meetings, or large events. Both restaurant and Tiki Bar are located at 801 Blackburn Pt. Rd in Osprey, FL. (941) 966-1901 www. caseykeyfishhouse.com

A man reported he was walking from the beach to the parking lot when he witnessed a man and a woman roughhousing. He then saw the woman scream and saw the man choking her and pushing her head against the sand and calling her derogatory names multiple times. According to the witness, the man then got up and started kicking the woman in the head before he put on his backpack and attempted to leave. When a deputy arrived the woman had fresh bruises on her body and sand covering her face. The victim stated that they were only playing around but seemed very nervous around the defendant. After talking with the victim, who told of the man waking her out of her sleep that night by choking her until she lost her breath, the defendant was read his Miranda rights and taken into custody. The defendant did not wish to talk to the deputy about the incident. He and the victim have been in a relationship for 6 years.

5/25/14 Possession of Marijuana Under 20 Grams - Siesta Beach

While on routine patrol observing traffic flow at the main entrance to the public beach, a deputy observed a man pull into the parking lot without wearing a seatbelt. He activated the emergency equipment on his ATV and conducted a traffic stop in the parking lot. As the deputy approached the vehicle he noticed all four windows were rolled down which allowed a clear line of sight into the vehicle. As the deputy began speaking to the driver (defendant), he could smell a strong odor of freshly burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle. He asked the driver if he had any drugs inside the car and he stated, “I just smoked a roach”. He then asked the driver if he had any contraband in the car and he stated, ”Yeah, just a little bit of my joint left over”. He then handed the deputy a bag containing a small baggy of a green leafy substance and a brown rolled up cigar containing that same leafy substance. Based on his training and experience, the deputy was able to identify the substance as marijuana.

The total amount of marijuana was less than 1 gram. The deputy advised the driver that he would be charged with possession of marijuana under 20 grams for actually being in possession of the drug inside his vehicle. The driver was the only occupant of the car at the time.

5/25/14 Residential/ Business Burglary 300 Block Island Circle

A woman called the Sheriff’s Office to report a possible burglary to her residence. The woman stated she returned home from The Village at about 9 p.m. on 5/25 and went to bed at her residence. She woke up the next morning and discovered someone had gained access to her backyard and used her hot tub and knocked over some plants. She stated that her gate had been double latched but that it was open on this morning. In the backyard, the cover to the hot tub was removed and laying on the ground and one of her shoes was soaked near the hot tub. There were also several plants knocked over. There are stairs to the complainants bedroom in the back of the residence and it was evident that someone had been up there as well because more plants were knocked down and items were moved around from their original position. The front of the residence is only accessible from inside the residence, but all the chairs were moved to a corner of the porch. The woman’s recycling bins were also strewn about her front yard. Her neighbors did not see or hear anything during the night.

6/11/14 Aggravated Assault/ Simple Battery 600 Block Calle De Peru

A man reported that he was hosting an open house on Calle De Peru and was attempting to pick up his realtor signs. A coworker drove by and honked his horn at him. As the man entered his vehicle he heard the defendant yell to him. The man figured he had a question about the open house and exited his vehicle. The defendant then approached the man in an aggressive manner with a power drill in his hand. The defendant began to scream and yell at the man about honking a horn on his street. The defendant continued to approach him while holding the power drill and putting his hand on the man’s chest. The man then grabbed the defendant’s hand and pushed him away causing the drill to fall to the ground. The defendant left and the man called 911. When questioned by deputies, the defendant stated that he was in his house when he heard honking car horns, which disturbed his pets. He stated that nothing physical had happened he had only yelled at the man while holding a power drill. A witness of the incident agreed with the victim. The defendant was arrested for battery.

New trolley route comes to Siesta Key Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) announced plans to start a new trolley route (#10) on July 12. This new route will run every hour and have two separate southbound destinations so you’ll need to check the banner on the bus if you are boarding from Westfield Southgate Mall or any of the southbound stops on the island. The bus leaving Westfield Southgate Mall travels on Siesta Drive with stops at Siesta Village, Siesta Beach, Stickney Point Road and will either take you down to Turtle Beach or will head up Stickney Point Road to the Sarasota Pavilion. The bus coming from Sarasota Pavilion, at the bus terminal, will stop at Stickney Point Road, Siesta Beach, Siesta Village and Westfield Southgate Mall. Kendra Keiderling, the department marketing coordinator, confirmed that daily passes will be available for purchase. The daily pass is $4.00, and can be purchased from the bus driver directly or you can pay $1.25 per use. With this roll –out, SCAT is also introducing a new application for Smartphones allowing you to obtain Real-Time Information (RTI) for bus arrival times. New signage will be installed that includes the bar codes for this app. Those riders without Smartphones can check routing information on the website: www. scat.scgov.net or call 941-861-1234. The existing Siesta Key Route (#11) will remain unchanged and will continue to run every 25-30 minutes. So how will you be able to quickly identify the new bus/trolley? The six trolleys which will be serving this new route will be sporting beach-themed “wraps.”

Benefit to be held for Brenda Kay So, who is Brenda Kay? Brenda Kay McDowell is a resident of Siesta Key and an accomplished massage therapist and Kundalini Yoga Guru. She has been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of pancreatic cancer and is currently receiving hospice care. Glen Cappetta, Siesta Key resident and owner of Sun Ride Pedicab is one of the key organizer’s for the upcoming benefit. He shared his thoughts, “The prognosis is one in which we choose not to believe, but in reality already know the eventual outcome”. This is the second benefit his team is hosting. Their mission: to raise funds needed to defray the rental cost of all the equipment that is allowing Brenda Kay to maintain a peaceful and pain-free life at this stage in the fight. Longtime friend, Elizabeth Morgan recently shared some insights about Brenda Kay. Following are excerpts from Morgan’s memoirs. What can I tell you about our friend Brenda Kay? Anything that I could share with you are nuances gathered from many conversations and much time spent together. Not the regular statistics that would be offered up in

a biography, but rather a personal memoir of sorts. She is always tending to those around her with loving touches of personal attention and healing. Always offering up positive suggestions for health and wellness, to those in her presence. She radiates love and light, always. Brenda Kay is a “head turner”, and is always noticed right away, when she walks into a room. Always commanding attention. I myself fell in love with her immediately. I think others would agree with me when I tell you that she has a knack for connecting with people immediately. As a result, she has a huge community of friends and family who would and have returned the favor of love and support that she has always offered to those that she loves and cares for. To read the entire touching tribute go to her facebook page: Brenda Kay’s Benefit Bash July 11, 2014. Details for the benefit are as follows: DATE: Friday, July 11, 2014 TIME: 4 – 10 p.m. LOCATION: The Boatyard Waterfront Bar & Grill, 1500 Stickney Point Rd, on the mainland side of

Stickney Point Bridge. If you are unable to attend the benefit, you can still donate to her hospice care. A benefit account has been set-up at Sun Trust Banks for Brenda Kay. The Account number is 1000172635137. You can go into ANY Sun Trust Branch and make a deposit to this account. All cash collected will be used to defray benefit costs and any remainder will be donated to a charity of BK’s choosing after the benefit.

Big Pass Dredging Update Based on the 171 page report that the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) released in mid-June, it verifies the safety of sand mining, thereby supporting the dredging efforts. Coastal sampling was to comply with Federal Department of Environmental Protection requirements for obtaining a ‘Sand Borrow’ designation in those areas. They have now submitted the Lido shoreline mitigation plan to County staff in Natural Resources and Coastal Management. Staff will provide an overview and summery including regulatory and environmental impact information

for Commissioners to consider before they recess for summer in August. The plan still suggests a groin placement and dredging an 18-21 ft. depth navigational channel along the southern shore of Lido Key at Ted Sperling South Lido Park. This park is known for paddle sports (kayak, canoe, fishing, manatee habitat and sea grass beds with excellent fishing. In 1973 Sarasota County residents, in a 9-1 county wide margin, approved 1/2 mil on property taxes for 30 years or until funding was complete toward purchase of this land to maintain it in its “natural state for open use by the public”.

Save Our Siesta Sand 2 (SOSS2) According to the Save Our Siesta Sand 2 (SOSS2) site, the project is now larger than originally proposed, calling for more sand to be mined. The site indicates that “None of our questions have been answered. This study needs to be vetted by a 3rd party unrelated to those who are being hired by the city and the county”.

If you are concerned about Big Pass and what removing over 1.3 million cubic yards of sand might do, please go to the website www. soss2.com and submit a petition, write to your commissioners and help us convince them that this is not the best way to solve Lido’s sand problems.

Pet Talk

By Dr. Anne Chauvet

1. Does my pet need all the vaccinations? Can I skip some? Like children, pets need the protection from the big bad world. It is most important to vaccinate early in life when the development of the immune system is most active. Rabies, by law, cannot be omitted. You may choose to skip some of the other vaccines later in your pet’s life. It is a good idea to discuss this option with your vet however, as some breeds need more protection than others and skipping on vaccinations is not recommended. Location can also determine the necessity of certain vaccines, so ask your vet for the list of shots required in your area. 2. My dog gained a lot of weight in a short period of time with no apparent reason such as diet or exercise change. Could this indicate an illness? Yes, it could. Endocrine problems, such as low thyroid levels, can be the cause of a sudden weight gain. Digestive system problems as well as old age can also be the cause. Either way, check with your vet, as treatment and /or change of diet might be necessary. 3. I just moved to Florida from upstate New York. My pets (cats and dogs) love the outdoors – are there any potential risks for them if I let them run loose in the yard? Florida – the land of the exotic and this exotic

land includes venomous snakes, such as rattlers and coral snakes. Certain plants, such as very popular Sago Palms (Miniature Palm Trees), are highly toxic and can cause liver failure and death if ingested. If you live in the countryside, watch for boars and other wild animals. In the city, the worse things your pet will most likely encounter are red ants, bees and wasps. And let’s not forget about the ever-present Florida heat. Animals, particularly dogs, can suffer a Heat Stroke - a life threatening condition, which requires immediate medical care, so don’t let your animals out during the hottest part of the day. Also, always provide shade and plenty of water. 4. My cat is scheduled for his first chemo treatment to fight lymphoma. Is it really effective? What’s the success rate? Yes, it is effective and let me share my Edward’s story with you. Edward has lymphoma and is healthier ten months into his treatment with Dr. Dawn Martin than he has been in years. He is very active and at this point has had no relapses. Chances are he has a few more months, if not years, to share with me. I highly recommend following through. Some factors need to be considered however: how advanced the disease is, where it is, and what drug is used. Let us know if you have any further questions.

Dr. Chauvet earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, completed a small animal medicine/surgery internship at the University of Illinois in Urbana and finished her residency in neurology/neurosurgery at the University of California, Davis. |Pet Friendly Beaches Although dogs are not allowed on any of the beaches on Siesta Key, there are a few places you can take your furry pal. Brohard Paw Beach, 1600 Harbor Drive, Venice, FL 34285. Hours: 24 hours per day, 365 days per year (parking closed from 12 AM – 6 AM); dogs allowed on the designated portion of beach from 7 AM to dusk only Paw Park is one of the few places along the beach where dogs are allowed. The park features an enclosed run for big dogs and one for small dogs, as well as an open beach area where dogs can swim. This park, across from Venice’s airport, is where you and your “best friend” can play in the gulf and socialize with other dogs, offering doggie drinking fountains; showers on decks for “dogs only”, fire hydrants and leash posts, dog lovers have declared this park… and beach… to be the best doggie park in the state! Shaded by towering oaks, small dogs will enjoy their fenced in arena while the big boys can frolic in the larger pen. Double gates access both parks and the beach. A paved walkway leads directly to the beach where your best friend will delight in this 300’ section of sand and water.

16

Note: Summer months may force you to carry your furry friend as the sand can be hot under paw. Doggie waste bags and receptacles are provided and strategically placed around the park. Human comforts include drinking fountains, picnic tables and restrooms. Parking is very limited although off road parking is across the street. Bird Key Park is located on Bird Key, Florida, at the foot of the Ringling Causeway Bridge, which leads to Sarasota. This small stretch of beach along Sarasota Bay is a well-known spot for dog lovers. You and your dog can swim together while enjoying stunning views of the blue-green water. The park is open from 6 a.m. until 12 a.m. year-round, and admission is free. (Source: eHow)

Ken Thompson Park, a small beach on the Gulf Coast of Florida, is a hidden treasure near the Mote Marine Aquarium on Sarasota Bay. Here you will also find the New Pass Fishing Pier, which winds through the mangroves. You and your pet can stroll along the pier or relax in the sun while watching the kayakers launch their boats. The beach is open from 5 a.m. until 11 a.m. and admission is free. (Source: eHow)

Beach Reads By Terri Schlichenmeyer “Stone Cold” by C.J. Box

©2014, Putnam $26.95 / $31.00 Canada, 371 pages

Sometimes, you just can’t fit in. You stick out like a sore thumb, totally unable to melt into the crowd. You feel like you have a neon sign across your shoulders; one that says “I’M NEW!” Yeah, you’re self-conscious then but, if you’re Game Warden Joe Pickett, you get used to it. And yet, as in the new book “Stone Cold” by C.J. Box, standing out could get a man killed. Anyone who’d seen Nate Romanowski on that nearly-moonless night would’ve instantly known he was a pro. Romanowski had studied the Scoggins compound, he knew how to get inside, and he knew Henry Scoggins was a jerk, that nobody would really miss him. Nate knew where all the security weaknesses and surveillance cameras were – except one. So when Joe Pickett was shown trailcam video weeks later and he spotted his friend Nate dragging something, he knew that trouble was mountain-high. For some time, the Feds had been nosing around northeastern Wyoming, where folks kept mostly to themselves. In that atmosphere of solitude lived a certain Wolfgang Templeton, a man who owned half the county and most of the people in it, and whose name repeatedly rose during investigations of high-profile disappearances, including that of Scoggins. Was it just coincidence? With a ruse of “helping” Medicine Wheel County Game Warden Jim Latta with a project, Pickett headed for the corner of the state, noting the beautiful land and the poverty of its people. Pickett had

promised his wife that he’d avoid danger, but keeping safe wouldn’t be easy when there were so many questions. Why, for instance, did Latta seem afraid of the county’s judge? Why did he look the other way while a couple of Templeton employees poached wild game at will? Who was the cold-eyed dandy on Templeton’s ranch? And why did everybody seem to know where Pickett was going, even before he got there? Perhaps most vexing of all was the question of Pickett’s friend Nate, and Nate’s covert activities. It pained Pickett to imagine how Nate was involved - although not as much as it would hurt if he kept snooping… Reading parts of “Stone Cold” is somewhat like going on a scenic vacation that takes a bad turn – in a good way. Author C.J. Box lets his main character, Joe Pickett, savor the land, and it’s gorgeous. We’re treated to descriptive images of colorful mountains and harsh beauty, where even scrub takes on a relaxing aura and invites us to linger just a bit. It’s easy, therefore, to be lulled into forgetting exactly what you’ve got in your hands. But then Box brings us abruptly back to his novel, in which few can be trusted and everything seems off. We’re soothed, then we’re hit with an uppercut of thriller that makes us reel – and makes us want more. This novel is part of a series but can definitely be read by itself, so if you’re in need of a hot mystery, get this. You won’t be sorry because, for you, “Stone Cold” fits.

NEW EVENING HOURS: THURS. thru SUN. 8PM or LATER In the last edition here in the Siesta Sand I told you how to make a stronger sand sculpture by packing your sand tightly into a form. This edition I’m going to answer another, very popular question Master sand sculptors hear a lot, “What kind of tools do you use?” Well if you were to take a hundred different professional sand artists and look in their tool bags you would likely find that no two sets of tools look very much alike. Due to the small amount of people engaging in sand sculpting on the level that we do, no company has ever produced a set of professional sand sculpting specific tools. Sand artists have developed their own tool kits, by either creating them from scratch, or using or remodeling tools from other mediums or professions. Some sculptors travel with a small handful of tools while others, like me, collect them as if we believed ‘he with the most tools wins’. A few tools we all utilize are shovels, buckets for water, rakes to groom the finished sand area, Tampers to compress the sand and some kind of carving instrument. This is where things start to vary. Many sculptors believe heavily in the concrete trowel, specifically the Marshalltown 7” x 3” pointing trowel. This is a heavy duty trowel that will cut through beach sand as well as the clay-heavy, glacial sands that are used in other areas around the world. Sculptors will keep these beloved tools ‘til the blade has been worn down to a nub no bigger than their thumb. I work predominantly with beach sand so I use a thinner set of knifes for carving, the Liquitex paint palate knives. This photo is just a small part of the tools that I carry. Starting at the left, you’ll see an array of corner and rounded trowels for shaping and smoothing large areas of sand. The round end

ones are swimming pool trowels. Next is a large concrete margin trowel for straight cutting large areas. Then the heart of my tools, are the16 Liquitex knives, with the eye shaped one being one of my favorites when a larger tool is needed, but I will come back to these. Above those is a drywall mud knife that I use for creating very straight cuts and corners. The next two tools at the top are very interesting, first, at the top is an antique aluminum ice cream scoop with a bakelite handle like your grandma had, which I use for scooping sand out of tight interior areas. The other, many of you equestrians may recognize as a curry comb, for combing out a horses coat. This is an invaluable tool when working on very large flat or slowly contouring areas like the side of a whale or flowing waves. It cuts away the sand quickly and evenly with long sweeping motions. Now with the Liquitex knives, you can imagine the four larger ones are for roughing the sculpture, getting the basic shapes cut in. The next seven I use more than almost any other, for the cutting of finer details. I will have five of these in my hand at one time like I can’t decide which one will do the job best. Then the next five are custom knives where I take a flat knife and bend it into certain shapes to accomplish specific tasks like converse or convex shapes or clothing folds. These five are in my other hand. Yes, a third hand would be very helpful. Clay loops are also popular with many artists. The red handled metal pointer above them is for the tiniest little details like the pupils of eyes, stitch details on clothing or even small lettering. Another fun tool is the round furniture sliders. These are perfect

tools for grasping the sponge interior like a handle and using the smooth side to run across the larger areas of the sculpture to create an ultrasmooth surface. Keep in mind that we frown on using any kind of coloring of the sand, all color must be indicated by differences in texture. Deeper textures will make things darker or shadowed while smooth areas will appear lighter or highlighted. Use these techniques in different levels to give the feeling of color differences. The halfmoon serrated trowel is great for achieving a textured area by dragging it across sand at different angles. The large paint brush can also give you a smoother textured surface, as well as it being great for moving excess sand away from a sculpting area. The smaller brushes are for smoothing and dusting, a makeup brush is wonderful for dusting fine sand without disturbing detail, though my hula girl duster does a super job at that too, and she always makes people smile when they see her on the pile. Most sculptors will also carry a hard straw or tube for blowing sand out of tiny areas and away from the finest details that even a fine brush may destroy.

And finally the three colored circles at the top right are called “Willy Spheres” after the Dutch sculptor who invented them, Wilfred Stijger. Wilfred has attended the Siesta Key Crystal Classic several times and hopefully will be coming back again this November 14th. These tools are fun for any age, they will make a perfectly round ball of sand every time simply by turning them in a spiral circle on a clump of sand. For those of you who are just gaining momentum with sand

sculpting and may not want to get this involved in tools yet there is an excellent tool kit for beginners and intermediates that you can purchase right here on Siesta. It’s the “CanYou-Dig-It Sand Tools” kit by Master Sand sculptor Matt Long, who is also returning to the Crystal Classic this year, and it is available at “Gidget’s Coastal Provisions” in Siesta Village. So when it comes to which tool is the best for sand sculpting, to each his own. So grab your shovel, buckets and tools and get out there and Pile it, Pound it, Sculpt it!

SIESTA SAND July 2014 • www.siestasand.net

Meet the Natives Three Rarely Seen Imperiled Bird Species are Nesting on Siesta Key Beach! By Allan Worms, Ph.D., Wildlife Biologist (retired) Snowy Plovers, a rare and beautiful little bird, listed in Florida as Threatened, have been joined on Siesta Key Beach by two additional imperiled species: Least Terns -- the smallest of the American terns -- and the dramatic Black Skimmer! In previous editions of Siesta Sand we have introduced the Snowy Plover and right now our beach has these two more rare and exceptional birds breeding, laying eggs and raising chicks. Dainty, but determined to survive, the Snowy Plovers are the color of Siesta Key beach sand. Even adult birds are hard to see until they scurry out from under beach walkers’ feet. The newly hatched chicks, however, are dramatic! Only a little larger than your thumb, these precocious little hatchling birds visually suggest a sand colored cotton ball running about on toothpick legs. They are insectivores and forage along the beachfront looking for insects and other small invertebrates. Least Terns are beautiful small terns which have a crisp white triangle on their front brow when in breeding plumage (think of a “V”).

And with their yellow bill and rapid dives for small fish they are quite distinctive. Like the snowy plovers, small terns are also highly vulnerable to disturbance by humans, dogs or other pets. They are listed as threatened by the Wildlife Commission. Interestingly, Least Terns and Snowy Plovers get along really well when nesting near each other. Possibly the fact that snowy plovers feed on insects and invertebrates in the sand and that least terns dive for small fish and are thus – non-competitive -- is an asset in their cooperative behavior. Another feature of least terns is that they are VERY protective of their nests. Don’t get too close -- you’ll get “dive-bombed”! And note the Black Skimmer. This medium sized black bird exhibit’s a brilliantly colored and unique adapted bill that sets it apart from all other American birds. The large reddishorange and black bill is almost knife-like in appearance. In hunting for food the bird actually skims the water with its long, very narrow lower mandible slashing through the water seeking small fish and other edible objects. When it

feels a small fish, shrimp or crustacean the upper and lower bills shut tightly allowing the bird to swallow its prey. An additional feature of the Black Skimmer is that while it can see and hunt in the daytime, mostly it is crepuscular and nocturnal. This means it hunts most often in the evening, through the night and in the early morning. And a final unique feature of the Black Skimmer is that its pupils are narrow in full light, but able to open to a full round aperture when they skim the water at night! Each of these birds is rare and subject to having their nests ruined by humans, dogs, crows and other attacks. This spring one Snowy Plover hen even lost two eggs from her nest to a ghost crab. Fortunately she was able to incubate the third egg and it is now a healthy chick running around looking for insect foods. Wherever you walk on Siesta Key Beach, be aware of these rare birds. Stay out of the posted areas where they nest, but by all means watch the birds, talk with the volunteer bird stewards and enjoy these birds’ beauty. Photos by Claire Herzog

Notes from the Island Fishmonger Healthy Facts and tips about Florida Seafood: All Seafood is good for you. Lean fish such as flounder, grouper, snapper, mahi-mahi, tilapia and shellfish are excellent sources of protein and are low in fat. Fish that have more fat like Mackerels, Swordfish, Tuna, Salmon and trout, are recommended for their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Studies indicate omega 3 fatty acids can decrease the risk of heart disease, provide some protection against bronchitis and emphysema associated with smoking and are necessary for optimal brain, nerve and eye development in children. Shellfish can also be an important part of a healthy and well balanced diet. Shellfish are high protein, low levels of fat and saturated fat. Most shellfish, clams, crabs and oysters contain limited amounts of fat and saturated fat, and contain low levels of cholesterol. Research emphasizes that reducing the total amount of fat and saturated fat is generally more important than limiting cholesterol. Shrimp and lobster are exceptionally low in fat and saturated fat however; they do contain higher amounts of cholesterol. So, unless you are on a restricted low cholesterol diet you can eat shrimp or any other shellfish more than once a week and stay within the dietary recommendations limiting cholesterol intake to less than 300 mg per day.

Seafood Cooking Tips: 1.) A general rule for cooking fish is 10 minutes per inch at 400 degrees, turning the fish halfway through the total cooking time. Fish less than a half inch thick does not need to be turned. If fish is cooked in sauce or foil, add 5 minutes to the total cooking time.

Adventure Charters 941-371-1390

2.) Shrimp and scallops should be cooked until they become opaque and firm when fully cooked. Shrimp usually take approximately 3 minutes and scallops take approximately 5 minutes. Oysters, clams and mussels are generally cooked once their shells have opened. Top 10 Reasons to Eat Seafood: 1.) Because David Letterman eats seafood... we assume because he looks so healthy. 2.) It tastes good 3.) It’s healthy 4.) It saves cows 5.) It saves lives 6.) Because oysters are an aphrodisiac. 7.) Because you can make shrimp sausage and tuna burgers, out of it 8.) Two words: fish jerky 9.) Soup is good but is better with fish... like clam chowder 10.) Just for the halibut

Bethany Steward with a big Sarasota summer speckled trout.

July fishing can be excellent, but tactics need to be a little different and windows of opportunity are smaller. It is simply too hot to fish in the middle of the day. Early morning will be the most reliable time to fish, evenings are good too, but frequent thunderstorms can make planning a trip difficult. Anglers who don’t mind fishing in the dark will have success at night, and they will beat the summer heat! Action on the deep grass flats from the north end of Siesta Key should be very good for speckled trout, along with bluefish, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, pompano, and jacks. A high tide in the morning is favored for anglers to drift the flats and cast Cotee jigs, Rapala plugs, spoons, and live shrimp under a popping cork. Netting up a bunch of shiners and chumming the deep flats will usually result in non-stop action. The flats and oyster bars south of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters at Stickney Pt. down to Blackburn Pt. will hold some nice trout in July, and that area gets very little pressure in the summertime. The key is water temperature; if it is too high the bait and gamefish will not be there. Redfish and snook will also cruise the bars and shorelines in search of prey. Areas that drop off quickly into three or four feet will be the most productive spots. A hand picked shrimp is deadly fished early in the morning on a high tide. Anglers

Located at Turtle Beach Marina in South Siesta Key | 941.349.3119 www.siestakeycharterfishing.com Captain Joe Bonaro offers more than exciting deep sea fishing opportunities aboard “Sarasota’s

choosing artificial lures will score with topwater and shallow diving plugs, scented soft plastics, and weedless gold spoons. Redfish will begin to school up in July and can be caught in very shallow water The largest trout also prefer shallow water, so don’t be surprised if a “gator” intercepts an offering meant for a redfish. These fish should be released unharmed, they are the female breed stock and are crucial to a healthy trout fishery. Night fishing will be exciting and productive in July. Lighted docks and bridges attract glass minnows and shrimp, which in turn attracts the gamefish. Snook are abundant, but trout, reds, jacks, ladyfish, and snapper will also be caught at night. Live shrimp works very well free lined in the current with little or no weight. A 24” piece of 25 lb flourocarbon leader and a 1/0 live bait hook is the basic rig. Lures will also catch fish, but can be difficult to cast at night. Fly fisherman will score with a small white snook fly such as the Grassett’s Snook Minnow tied on a #4 hook. Tarpon will still be plentiful in the Gulf of Mexico, although the anglers will not be. The large schools will have broken up, and although the fish don’t show as well, they eat better. Pinfish and crabs drifted out 6 feet under a cork at first light will catch tarpon in July. Point of Rocks on Siesta Key is a proven spot to fish.

Who’s Playing Tonight

By Mike Sales

|An interview with Andres Colin Whenever Andres and I play in the village on the same day, I can expect to see him headed down the sidewalk, stopping to have a few words with all of his friends along the street…it just comes natural to him to socialize, he’s that kind of person. He’s also, that kind of musician…every time I wander over to hear him, he’s singing and playing a different genre of song. In the same way he reaches out to colleagues and co-workers, he makes a connection with his audience by

playing a variety of songs and styles, being sure to include something for everyone; so, it wasn’t hard to find him for an interview… WPT: Where were you born? Andres: I was born in Chihuahua, which is in the North of Mexico, but I moved all around the country, during my life and grew up, musically in the big city of Guadalajara. It’s where I began writing songs and performing. WPT: When did you start playing music?

Performing Live Weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:00 PM ‘til 4:00 PM

Andres: I started playing the guitar when I was 12 years old, because I went to a school where they offered lessons on different things, like guitar, flute, gymnastics and such, and my father told me that if I took guitar, he would let me use the guitar he had, so I decided to try it. I hadn’t any interest in it before that, but once I tried it, I loved it. WPT: When did you start singing? Andres: When I was around 15, and started writing at 16. WPT: When did you come to Sarasota?

BluQue Island Grill 149 Avenida Messina

Siesta Key

Andres: Around 8 years ago. My sister had moved here for work and I came up to join her and fell in love with the area and the weather. WPT: How long did it take you to get traction as a professional musician? Andres: I was a server for about a year. I did jams, but opportunities were limited until I began learning

how to sing songs in English. WPT: How long did that take you? Andres: I already knew some English and was very familiar with American music, but it took a few years to get fluent. WPT: How many CDs have you released? Andres: Two CDs; “Universal Universe”, which was released last year and the other one is called “Este Vida.” They both contain all original music and are available on iTunes and Cd Baby. WPT: How many originals do you play at your gigs? Andres: About every 4th song is an original. WPT: What can your audience expect to see when they come to your gig? Andres: They can expect to see a guy who builds songs from scratch. Using a synthesizer, accessed through playing my guitar. I stack piano, organ, saxophone and use the looper to play every kind of music you can imagine, including, reggae, blues, pop, rock, country world, Brazilian, Portuguese and all kinds of Latin. They can expect to be entertained. I make jokes and interact as they dance, laugh and have a good time. WPT: What’s your favorite kind of music that you play? Andres: I enjoy playing Flamenco, but my favorite kind of music is the

Andres Colin Bossa Nova, from Brazil. WPT: What’s your favorite thing about being a fulltime working musician? Andres: The best thing is that I love what I do. WPT: What’s your career highlight? Andres: It’s not one thing, in particular, but my best moments are when people come back to see me, long after they heard me the first time and tell me how I had a positive effect on them, with my music. Sometimes, it’s just a good memory, but it can be very significant. I’ve had people tell me that I inspired their child to begin playing guitar. Being able to have that kind of purpose is definitely a highlight. WPT: What are your career goals? Andres: I want to continue playing more festivals and events. I’m also putting a regional music show together and working on a band project and an original solo project. I’m going to focus a lot more on writing and really try to hone my craft and record a new album of

quality songs that really express what matters to me. WPT: When you have a night off, which local musicians do you like to see? Andres: Well, I like to go hear you on my breaks… I enjoy Bryan Spainhower’s guitar sounds, he’s featured on my CD. I really enjoy John McLaughlin’s guitar skills, Ari’s (McManus) voice, love it and Scott Curts, I really like his style. WPT: What is your message to your audience? Andres: Yes…this is my day job, if they were wondering...actually, music is my night job, but my day job is to keep my night job and there’s nothing like live music, so come and see me! Island Humor [ A fifteen year old Amish boy and his father were at the mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The boy asked, “What is this father?” The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, “Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life. I don’t know what it is”. While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheel chair moved up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened, and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed, and the boy and his father watched the small numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number, and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Finally the walls opened up and again and a gorgeous 24-year-old blonde stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son: “Go get your mother”.

[ Bubba’s pregnant sister was in a bad car accident, which caused her to fall into a deep coma. After nearly six months, she awoke and saw that she was not longer pregnant. Frantically she asked the doctor about her baby. The doctor replied, “The babies are fine. You had twins – a boy and a girl. Your brother came in and named them”. The woman thought to herself, “Oh no! Not Bubba; he’s an idiot”. Expecting the worst, she asks the doctor, “Well, what’s the girl’s name?” “Denise,” the doctor answers. The new mother says, “Wow! That’s a beautiful name; maybe I was wrong about my brother. I really like that name. How about the boy’s name?” The doctor replies, “Denephew”. [ A man walks into a lawyer’s office and inquiries about the rates. “Fifty dollars for three questions,” replies the lawyer. “Isn’t that awfully steep?” asks the man. “Yes” the lawyer replies, “and what’s your third question?”

[ Fifty-one years ago, Henry James, a West Virginia mountain man, was drafted by the Army. On his first day in basic training, the Army issued him a comb. That afternoon the Army barber sheared off all his hair. On his second day, the Army issued Henry a toothbrush. That afternoon the Army dentist yanked several of his teeth. On the third day, the Army issued him a jock strap. The Army has been looking for Henry for 50+ years.

Directions: Mix the schnapps and cranberry juice in a shaker; pour into an ice-filled glass. Muddle the jalapeno pepper, lemon and lime slices, tequila, blue curacao and simple syrup (to make a batch, dissolve sugar in equal parts hot water and chill) in the shaker. Slowly strain into the glass over the red layer. Be sure to pour the blue layer gently over the back of a spoon into the red layer for best results. Garnish with watermelon, if desired. Featured Artist

|Dennis Kowal - American Sculptor Dennis Kowal was born and raised in Chicago. As a child, he remembers sitting in the Music Box Theatre watching a movie. When the newsreel came on, exposing the audience to the first atomic bomb tests, the boy was so horrified that he hid beneath the seats. The experience so terrified him that years later, as an artist, he created a series of sculptures called Ominous Ikons, a series on which he continues even today. These pieces evoke a symbol of ambivalence, fear and duplicity—i.e. the extinction of life as we know it. Says Kowal: “Fine art for me is the antithesis of war and as such is an irreducible truth.” After surviving Bulbar Polio at the age of 10, he grew up to attend University of Illinois on the Navy Pier in Chicago, and also the Art Institute of Chicago, receiving his BS in 1960. He received his MFA in 1962 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. His life as a sculptor has spanned more than five decades. Kowal’s work is monumental and archetypical as well as classic and symbolic. It has also been called sensual and intuitive, for a life affirming creative energy emerges from within each piece. He has had over fifty one-man exhibitions, exhibited in hundreds of group shows, and delivered an equal number of lectures. He has also published eleven limited edition prints and authored the technical book, Casting Sculpture. Kowal has served as professor at a number of different colleges, among them the U. of Illinois in Champaign; Columbus College of Art & Design; Frostberg State College in Maryland; and Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. His work has been featured at Sarasota Season of Sculpture in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. His work can also be seen at the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, Temple Beth Israel, and the Van Wezel Auditorium. It has been featured at Florida Federal in Tampa, FL; Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg, FL; “WOW2” Art without Walls in Ft Pierce, FL, and Sculpture Key West. Two of his works have been exhibited at the Ravinia Festival, a summer music event that has served Chicago for over 100 years. Definitely an East Coast guy, Kowal is a sculptor of grand pedigree. He has been named Artist-inResidence at dozens of prestigious locations: MacDowell Colony in NH; “Yaddo” in Saratoga Springs, NY; University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.; Institute of Contemporary Art, NEA, Boston; De Cordova Museum, Lincoln, MA; Amherst College, Amherst, MA.; Oxbow, MI; Maudslay State Park, Newburyport, NH; Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH; Haystack in Hinckley, Maine; and “Coolfont” in Berkley Springs, WV. Kowal received an NEA Matching Grant at Babson College, Wellesley, MA. He has served as Visiting Artist at Milton Academy, MS. MA Council for the Arts and Humanities, and also at Pinellas County Center for the Arts in St Petersburg, FL. He worked on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A controversial and outspoken artist, Dennis Kowal has been written up in ‘Who’s Who in America”, and also in “Who’s Who in American Art.” Boston Magazine has named him as one of “82 People to Watch.” Harvard Common Press has written about his work in “Public Art in Greater Boston.” Dateline TV has included him in a program called “Public Art, Voodoo Dolls, & Politics.” He has been written up in Art New England; Arts & Culture Magazine, Sarasota, Fl; Art in America; ART News; International Sculpture News

Magazine; HUB publications; the C.G .Jung Society Quarterly (Symbols: Signs of our Times); and the Sarasota Art Review —Art, Money, and Politics. One of Kowal’s most elegant pieces stands in front of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center. It received the Millennium Award from The Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs. Entitled “Photon –Aerospace Aluminum”, the City of Sarasota selected prototypes of this work to be given as gifts to its eight Sister Cities: Treviso, Italy; Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; Perpignan, France; Vladimir, Russia; Telmond, Israel; Dunfermine, Scotland; Siming, Xiamen, China; and Merida, Mexico. Kowal and his spirited wife— painter Jill Hoffman Kowal—have been married for 17 years and live in the Laurel Park area. Besides being an artist, Jill is also famed as a documentarian of the Punk Rock Era in Europe and America. In the fall, she will be giving a presentation on the Punk Rock Era at the Selby Gallery at Ringling College of Art and

Design. Dennis’s namesake daughter, Denise Kowal, is the creator of the International Chalk Festival. Another daughter, Jolie, and her husband, Brian McInnis, engage in the restoration of historic properties. His eldest daughter, Christie Kowal Smith, is a licensed arborist in Boston. His brothers, Cal and Richard, are both artists. Dennis Kowal’s most recent installation of public art was at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. It was an 8” 2” core ten steel piece called “Constellation”. He is currently working on smaller pieces in carved acrylic, compiling an artistic biography of his work, and completing a video about his sculptures. In the words of Dennis Kowal: “Creativity is rare. The expression of creativity is even more rare. Those who know the difference are in danger. A subtle palatable fear is in the air.” Kowal’s work may be seen on his website: www.denniskowal.com

Cool Treats for Summer What better way to celebrate America’s birthday, then with fireworks and one of America’s favorite treats – ice cream. The cool sweet treat makes it ideal for our intense summers. Actually, here on the Key, every day is a perfect day to enjoy the cooling flavors enjoyed by so many visitors and locals alike. We asked ice-cream shops on and around the Key to share some of their most popular flavors. Abel’s Ice Cream, located just over the Stickney Point Bridge in the South Bridge Plaza, offers a selection of 38 flavors including two frozen

yogurts, two no sugar added a sorbet (non-dairy product) plus a sherbet. The secret to their unbeatable taste of the Artisanal Style Ice Cream and Yogurts is synonymous for large quantities of oversized inclusions throughout the product along with the many creative and unique flavors. The brand is produced in the original way ice cream was made, Vat Pasteurization. This process allows them to pasteurize the Ice Cream Mix at a lower temperature

over a longer period of time which in turn naturally imparts a great caramelized taste to the sugars in the Ice Cream Mix. This process takes longer and is less automated, but the end result in the taste of their ice cream and yogurts makes it worth it. In addition, this process also has the benefit of preserving the integrity of the ingredients. The many awards they’ve won is a testament to the quality of their product. Their top three sellers are: • Stellar Coffee - Rich coffee ice cream with fudge and mini dark chocolate coffee cups • Coconut Almond Fudge -

Tropical coconut ice cream with fudge ribbon and whole roasted almonds • Bear Claw - Dark intense chocolate ice cream with thick caramel weave & chocolate covered cashews

Orange Octopus, located in Captain Curt’s Village, uses a simple tried and true approach. Owner, Kim Bennaji, takes pride in using the highest quality ingredients. “Our

local creamery is always churning out the freshest recipes to tantalize your taste buds.” Their ice cream is made to “super premium” standards with the best ingredients, resulting in the creamiest and most delicious treat a smiley face can serve you. They offer 28 flavors to choose from along with an assortment of sundaes and milk shakes. If a caffeine kick is what you’re after there is a full espresso bar for cold and hot drinks as well. Their top three sellers are: • Salted Caramel – vanilla ice cream with ribbons of caramel, pecan praline and salt. • Dutch Chocolate – Rich dark smooth and creamy “European” chocolate. • Mint Chocolate Chip – green peppermint ice cream with chocolate chips and flakes churned throughout.

McClain’s Ice Cream & Superior Yogurt, is located in the Gulf Gate Shopping area. McClain’s Ice cream has been serving the Sarasota community for more than 20 years. This family run operation continues to make their ice cream the old fashioned way. Each batch is still hand-churned and made to order. Batches are kept small to ensure freshness. And, generous scoops are a given. Frozen yogurt options are also available. Be sure to visit them at their new location on Superior Avenue, next to Monk’s Steamer Bar, and use their dollar off coupon on page 25. Top three sellers for McClain’s are: • Butter Pecan - butter pecan ice cream chock-full of freshly roasted Georgia pecans. • Gator Tracks - vanilla ice cream packed with chewy brownie pieces, fudge bits, reeses bits, and a chocolate brownie swirl. •Coffee Crunch - coffee flavored ice cream packed with heath bars and milk chocolate bits. It’s better than a hot cup of coffee on a summer day.

Soulfully Yours Donnarose Q: Dear Donnarose, my sister-inlaw lives with us and helps my wife who is disabled. However, she is always yelling due to her own issues. How can my wife and I possibly avoid the unhealthy impact of this? ~Thanks, Roger A: ~ “Keep it simple to make things right, by trusting in Archangel Michael’s beautiful blue light.”– Donnarose Melvin Many folks use crystals and sage, and whatever else to keep their living space clear of negative energy. Consider this will also work for a person’s energy. Well, that along with you sending your sister-in-law love and white light energy. What I try to explain to my clients, is that instead of being angry towards that person, we want them to get stronger and feel love for themselves which will shift and lift their vibrational frequency. This is the way to help alter their behavior, which is what you’d like, right? Include the prayer “Thank you archangel Michael for clearing my sister-in-law’s body and space of all negative energies, for protecting her with your protective shield, for keeping her safe, and filling her with love, Amen“. The outcome will be for all of your Highest good. Trust me when I say, it works. ~♥ Q: Dear Donnarose, I’m really trying to work on not judging people. But my husband doesn’t make it easy because he judges people all the time. For example, there’s a family in our neighborhood whose kids don’t look like they shower much, and it seems unsanitary. My husband took it a step further and said they’re just a bunch of hillbillies, and other derogatory names.

WORD LIST:

From Donnarose He said he’s not judging, he’s just stating the facts. Who is right here? ~Regards, Denise

A: ~ “When you judge another, you aren’t defining them, you’re defining yourself” - Dr. Wayne Dyer “When you judge another, you aren’t defining them, you’re defining yourself” - Dr. Wayne Dyer Well it could be considered stating the facts that consistent poor hygiene can be unhealthy or unsanitary. But the second part regarding the name calling is judging, as it’s your husband’s opinion and desire to label the people involved in the situation. Many people judge, but are often unaware of the negative impact it’s making on their own spirit. When we say judgmental things or even think them, it’s like pouring poison through the top of our heads which slowly seeps into our body. And in the long run or sooner, this becomes much more damaging to us, than the person being judged. But continue with your efforts. You may rub off on your husband sooner than later.~♥ Donnarose Melvin is a professional psychic, medium and energy healer, whose pleasure is to assist clients worldwide. Another summer is upon us and the season for picnics and grilling outdoors is well under way. This month we’ve selected four wines to impress your friends and please your palate without burning hole in your pocket. We hope you enjoy some of our new refreshing whites and tasty reds this summer season. Vinho Verde is our number one most refreshing white wine. Originating in Portugal, Vinho Verde is fresh and fizzy with a citrusy effervescence. Very easy drinking and relatively lower on alcohol than most wines, about 10 to 12 percent. Vinho Verde is a young wine meant to be consumed within the first year or two of harvest. The Portuguese grapes that are used in Vinho Verde are arinto, azal, loureiro and trajadura. This wine is excellent with grilled chicken or salads and it’s wonderful alone or with a cheese plate. Serve with a slice of lemon or lime as a garnish. Next on our list of summer

favorites is Bubbles by Lobetia which is an outstanding wine from La Mancha, Spain. It’s a medium bodied sparkling white Cava made of 100% Chardonnay grapes. The first sip is of exotic and white fruits while the mid palate is drier and the finish slightly bitter. This is another refreshing wine for summer picnics as its sparkling bubbles are thirsty quenching yet the wine brings a fruity sophistication to a grilled menu. Enjoy this with tangy honey barbecued chicken and, my favorite, grilled zucchini. Now just because the weather is warmer doesn’t mean you have to give up Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernets are a favorite complement to chat grilled steaks, but sometimes Cabernet Sauvignon can be too heavy to drink during the summer. Consider trying a smoother, medium bodied Cabernet Sauvignon like Casa Julia from Chile. This Chilean Cab has notes of cherry and blackberry that shine

through to a velvety finish. Lots of full flavor with very little oak will have you asking for a second glass. Big, bold and beautiful is the best way to describe Wine Guerrilla Zinfandel from Sonoma County. This Old Vine Zin is well balanced and fruit forward and it’s an excellent choice for barbecued pork or beef. Old Vine wines are from vines that are at least 50 years old and the older the vine, the more complex the root system. Old Vines produce less fruit but their grapes have a higher concentration of flavor. This Zinfandel boasts flavors of blackberry jam, peppery spice, licorice and has a very long finish. Enjoy with baby back ribs! Each of the wines mentioned are a value at under $20 and are available for you at Siesta Key Wines. Happy Summer! 5138C Ocean Blvd. - in the Village, 941-552-9105.

Perhaps the police should entertain the thought of eliminating the key altogether so that there would be no homes and thus no homes to enter. Longboat Key Police have been on the lookout these past few months for trespassers who have been entering into houses on Jewfish Key. According to Bruce Holst of Selby Botanical Gardens who found the rare plant, the ground-hugging specimen has glands that secrete a sticky substance that traps insects when they mistake the glistening liquid for dew. Holst has only seen one other example of the plant and that was almost 15 years ago at Myakka River State Park. The discovery was part of a survey of plant life on public lands the county contracted Selby to complete. The cost: $11,000. I don’t know what is more intriguing: the discovery of a rare

Having the surveillance system is helpful but only if it is providing the images in enough time for there to be an arrest. Longboat Key Town Manager David Bullock thought the solution might be to truck in the sand (hundreds of trucks carrying thousands of truckloads of the quartz crystals) or bring it in via tubes pumped from a dredging site near Jewfish Key. Hence the possible solution to both problems. If they pump enough sand, the remnants of Jewfish Key would be pumped and dumped all along the key and there would be no homes on the key since there would be no key. With no houses trespassers would have no houses to trespass upon.

“I’m Shocked, Shocked...!”

Claude Raines Moment of the month: Martha Raddatz of ABC News reporting on a lawsuit filed by former NFL Players alleging that NFL team doctors administered painkillers to players to keep them in the game. According to Raddatz: “(the lawsuit) alleges a stunning

deception: that team doctors prescribed powerful painkillers to players without disclosing the risks...” Stunning? Haven’t any of these players or journalists ever seen the movie “North Dallas 40?” It was made all the way back in 1979. Its power then as now is that everyone knew it was not a fictional account, even if the names were changed to protect the (not so) innocent. Next thing you know they’ll be reporting that playing football can lead to concussions.

Island Design Colors of Siesta Key The eclectic styles and array of colors for our private residences and various condominiums contribute to Siesta Key’s charming appeal. One of the first areas we evaluate when wanting to give our home, neighborhood or condominium a new look is freshening up with paint. Although there are only a few codes or rules that monitor color choices on private homes, should personal preference be your only consideration? Home owners use different approaches when choosing colors for the exteriors of their homes. Mr. Hani Rihan chose to paint his home after purchasing it in 2004. He went to the selections of Lowes Color Palettes and chose a suggested combination that he felt enhanced his home, landscaping and surrounding neighborhood. “I thought it was going to be ugly”, was Mr. Rihan’s first comment when he began painting. However after his completion, he appreciates the enhancement the colors have made in identifying the different

architectural features. The controversy will always be personal preference of you and your neighbor when painting exteriors. Interior colors are your own personal space; neighborhoods are shared. So often we believe neutral is best, that it is risk free. However the beauty of color is appreciated by all. Well, except for the neighbor who doesn’t like color. Often the color choice has a reason. This home in Siesta Isles was painted in 2009 when the owner decided to put it up for sale. With the challenges of sales in our real estate market the past few years, strong curb appeal is essential

International buyers continue to help the Sarasota real estate market recover from the “bust”. Bank owned properties and short sales also remain down, indicating a strong market that should continue to rebound. Median sales prices have also risen about 15% over the previous year.

to attract the drive-by potential customer. During the consultation review of surrounding homes and landscape, it was determined that using the natural colors of the tree trunk for an accent gave the best results without conflicting with the surrounding residence. The overall house color was chosen to be a shade of white to accentuate the rooftop and reflect against darker scenery which emphasizes the square footage. The only need to refresh the exterior of this Siesta Key home was to accentuate the details with a complimentary trim. It is always important to have the exact hue and saturation. Architecture is a beautiful element of design. There are times when architecture needs nothing more than the brilliance of sunlight or the reflection of color from the natural surroundings. However, using a variety of colors can make your home more attractive when there are restrictions on architectural detail. It can be the difference in making a house look like a box or a well-planned architectural structure. Before you enhance your home with color, take all aspects of architecture and design into consideration. If you choose not to consult with a professional, it is simple to access information online. There is a plethora of websites with good advice available. Three key points to remember: • Focus on a combination of 2-3 colors that enhance your architecture • Light colors add size, dark colors create drama • Borrow from the nature that created one of the most beautiful places in the world. Wild, Wild West of Potent Marijuana Products

Junior Volleyball Tournament

By Margie Menzel

By Trebor Britt

Continued from cover story

But Ben Pollara, campaign manager for United for Care, the group driving the amendment, said the anti-pot coalitions arguments were misleading. “This is about getting relief to really sick and suffering people,” Pollara said. “Our opponents look at the polls and see that Floridians probably support medical marijuana and are either split or opposed to the adult use of marijuana. And the way that they think they can win this campaign is by tricking people into believing this is about something other than what it really is, which is the medical use of marijuana.” The constitutional amendment requires approval from 60 percent of voters to pass, and polling has been inconsistent. A Quinnipiac University poll released in early May showed that 88 percent of Florida voters support allowing adults to legally use marijuana for medical purposes. But Sarah Bascom, spokeswoman for the “Don’t Let Florida Go to Pot” campaign, pointed to a poll out Tuesday June 10 that was conducted for The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald. It showed that roughly 54 percent of Miami-Dade County voters supported the medical

marijuana measure --- not enough for it to pass in November. And that was in a heavily Democratic county. “It’s completely at odds with what every poll has found on the topic in the last year and a half,” Pollara said of the Miami-Dade poll. “I don’t really think much of it.” The polls are inconsistent because they are changing, University of South Florida political science professor Susan MacManus said. “I suspect some of them were fairly accurate at the time they were taken,” she said. “But you’ve got to put them in the time frame of when they were asked and what’s going on. It makes a difference as to what kind of stories have been carried on television in what markets on the whole issue of marijuana in Colorado and groups coming out against it. The publicity, in other words, can really change peoples minds on this issue.” MacManus said she thought the ballot measure could go either way. A political committee that is helping fund opposition to the amendment raised $2.6 million in May, with $2.5 million coming from Republican super-donor and Las Vegas casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson. That committee, the Drug Free Florida Committee, had received $100,000 before May. A spokesman for United for Care, the group backing the amendment, said it raised $195,359 in May. Spanish Bayonet (Yucca aloifolia) is salt tolerant and grows well in hot, dry areas. There are clones with gold or gold and pink striped foliage. It is native to Florida and attracts butterflies. This specimen makes a dramatic landscape statement, its dark green, stiff, dagger-like leaves projecting from thick, inclining trunks. Spikes of bright white blossoms appear in the center of the plant above the foliage in springtime to late summer depending on the year. With the sharp-needled tips removed with shears, Spanish bayonet makes a wonderful accent at entryways or in a shrub border. Their striking texture adds an accent to any garden. Plants eventually form attractive, multi-stemmed clumps. Photo Source: The Florida Botanical Gardens website

It’s very cleverly written so that there can be use and abuse.” Judd and other members of the group said they want to educate voters about the dangers of the amendment, which they consider to be so loosely written that Floridians of all ages will be able to obtain marijuana if it passes in November. We are literally looking at an unleashing of a Wild, Wild West of potent marijuana products, said Calvina Faye, executive director of Drug Free America. A ballot summary that voters will see when they go to the polls says, in part, the medical use of marijuana would be allowed for people with “debilitating diseases as determined by a licensed Florida physician.” The more-detailed text of the amendment lists diseases such as cancer, glaucoma and HIV and also refers to “other conditions for which a physician believes that the medical use of marijuana would likely outweigh the potential health risks for a patient.” Judd said that given the example of states that have legalized medical marijuana, such as California, the “other conditions” in the amendment could include sleeplessness, stress, cramps and pain from a sore back or broken arm. “If you just look at the history of what we’ve gone through with pill mills, you can imagine that it would be the same type of doctors making those recommendations,” Faye said.
