Troy Roberts is the founder/CEO and Head Distiller of Drum Circle Distilling, a Sarasota company which creates handcrafted rums. He entered the field just seven years ago, jumping into the world of rum with the enthusiasm of a pirate. In his former life in the corporate world —otherwise known as jail— he could only dream of whiling away the hours sitting on the beach waiting for the sun to set, a rumbased drink clutched firmly in his hand. For Troy it felt like the right way to live, for his early years had been spent on the beaches of Sarasota. He went away from home, as kids so often do, and took a few side trips before his eventual return to Sarasota. An adventurous soul, he served a stint as a Denver ski bum, and another as a sailor in Santa Cruz. He even tried the world of frozen yogurt, becoming a store owner in Portland Oregon. Finally Troy buckled down for ten years of hard work at Compuwear Corporation, where he served as Director of Product Management. Through all those boxed-in
Big Month for Events on Siesta Key
November is a month filled with three major events: The Sandfest Party, Crystal Classic Sand Sculpting competition and Light Up the Village.

Annual Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition
This great event is now in its 5th year. Join us this November 14th through 18th for what promises to be a spectacular experience watching sand sculptures rise from the sands on Siesta beach. Our Siesta Key sand is considered the best natural beach sand for sculpting because of its unique composition which consists of 99% quartz crystals. Twenty-four of the ‘‘TOP” master sculptors from around the world will compete for $15,000 in prize money and the “CRYSTAL CLASSIC SCULPTING DOUBLES TITLE”. Continued on page 27
software years he kept dreaming of returning to the beaches of Sarasota, staring at those highdrama sunsets, and sipping one more cup of liquid magic. Troy bailed out of the corporate rat race in 1999, and started several websites for sports car fans. They were quite successful, and he sold them in 2007 to a bigger company. He had returned to Sarasota in 2003 to kick off his shoes and walk barefoot once again on the fabled sands of Siesta Key. Along the way he reconnected with his high school sweetheart, the lovely Nanci Vatovek, to whom he is now engaged. Troy had four boys from a previous marriage, and Nanci had two. These two families were now blended together. With the sports car websites sold, Troy found himself with time and money on his hands. He had an abundance of energy, and
it happened that he liked to bake. Rum cakes were his specialty, and he briefly toyed with the idea of starting a rum cake company. Continued on page 19
Siesta Key Beach improvements top Key upgrades By Roger Drouin Siesta Key Beach’s new east concession building is being constructed 16-feet above the sand, to meet flood elevation requirements. The structure will include a viewing deck for watching sunsets, offering what Sarasota County Public Works Project Manager Brad Gaubatz describes as a fabulous view. In addition, the view looking up won’t be bad either, considering the building will bring an air of modern architecture to Siesta’s public beach. The $21.5 million Siesta Beach Park Improvement Project, which is being constructed in phases, will also bring a second concession node, expanded restrooms, two pavilions, and shade canopies—all constructed in the same architectural vein.

Independent Computer Store Continues to Flourish after 25 Years In an age where customer service has taken a back seat to business practices that favor automated voice messaging systems or offer subpar service due to cutbacks, it’s refreshing to come across a business that’s built their reputation on a customer-focused approach. Co-owners of Discount Computers, Inc., Amelia and Doug Manning have developed a strong customer base over the past 25 years doing just that – answering questions and
providing exceptional customer service. That’s quite an accomplishment when you consider all the big box computer stores that have come and gone. It’s telling when you get third and fourth-time buyers. That doesn’t happen unless the customer is satisfied. It’s also a confirmation that they’re doing something right - that something includes perks such as their FREE and unlimited “Lifetime” education, a service department

They willingly share their combined deep database of knowledge with their customers. And, their mantra of “Your

Whether you’re a first-time buyer or have been with them from the start, it doesn’t matter if your computer is old or new, Discount Computers, Inc., has no expiration date on that customer-centered, small business feel they provide their patrons. Beach Improvements Update:
Brad Gaubatz, AIA LEED AP, Facilities Manager, Public Works – Capital Projects for Sarasota County The new parking lot at Siesta Key Public Beach is open. Now they are working on the west parking lots. The project is moving a little faster than expected, and 105 new spaces will be available for the Crystal Classic event in the middle of November. After February of 2015, the beautiful new concession stand will be open. Between November 2014 and February 2015, however, construction will be in the “awkward phase.” At the end, the flow and layout of parking will be greatly improved, and 140 new spaces will have been created, there will even be some new spots for RV’s. For the first time, Public Works is trying out pervious concrete in the space where the old tennis courts used
to be. “We’ll see how it works,” said Mr. Gaubatz. “It is quite a bit more expensive, but rain simply disappears on the surface.” (With hard concrete, the rain just bounces.) The pervious pavement allowed the retention pond to be reduced adding more parking spots. “The current drainage system works on the west end of the parking lot, so we will not be changing that.” One additional entrance to the parking lot will be added, which should help with the flow of traffic. New decks are being constructed at the new facility. The concession stand will be elevated 16 feet and will hold 137 people. This over looks the volleyball area and the view is spectacular! Concessions and restrooms will also be up on this observation level and tables will not be permanent. In the parking lot no surveillance cameras are currently planned, but conduits have been installed in the event cameras need to be added. Amber LED lighting will be installed, as all lighting in the park was dictated by the turtle codes. According to Mr. Gaubatz, “It was a delicate balance
to provide safety for both people and turtles.” The sheriff and life guard offices will be added to this new building.
Questions / Public Comments:
What is the Homeless Policy? “This really is a question for the Sheriff’s Office. They were hoping for a new Homeless Facility in Sarasota County which to date has not happened. The Sheriff can’t take action unless a homeless person is breaking the law. If a person is camping on private property, the owners of that property have to make the complaint. Unfortunately, many owners live far away and are unaware of the situation. Once notified, however, the Sheriff can say to the homeless person: “You can’t be on the property. It’s private property. If you come back, we will charge you with trespassing.” The Sheriff’s Office takes the position that it is important to not give homeless people handouts: it only encourages them to stay”, Michael Shay stated. Saluting Veterans - Greeting Visitors As residents and visitors drive onto Siesta Key from Siesta Drive, not long after making the sharp left-hand turn onto Higel they are greeted by a wonderful black-and-white US flag artfully painted on a sound barrier wall. The flag was painted by Andrew Capron who lives in the home directly behind the flag. His goal was to have the flag completed by the Fourth of July 2014 and he completed it on July 3. As a new resident of Siesta Key, he was inspired to paint something on the wall that would be welcoming to residents and guests who visit. A huge fan of the military, Capron noted many servicemen and women have this black ink flag tattooed on their arm.
Siesta Key Round-Up Siesta Promenade Meeting Benderson Development held a meeting October 29th at Pine Shores Presbyterian Church covering the Stickney Point/ Siesta Promenade redevelopment project. As previously noted, Benderson is proposing to rezone the former mobile home park at the NW corner of US 41 and Stickney Point Rd from RMH, RMF-1 and OPI to CG. They proposed to construct a new 250,000 sqft shopping center and one hotel with an estimated construction start of spring 2015. The purpose of this meeting was to present project changes facilitated by previous meetings with neighboring property owners over the past few months. Benderson will be formally submitting their plans to the County and FDOT.

“Siesta Key and Sarasota are so much of an American city,” Capron related, “even as diverse as it is, it’s a slice of Americana that you just don’t see in towns anymore.” Once you see the flag you’ll agree it’s very graphic and makes a very bold statement. It also ties in a little with graffiti art and stencils; appropriate for Sarasota’s image as an artistic community. “It’s been amazing how many wonderful people have stopped by and asked if they could have their picture taken in front of the flag. I’m really happy that I did it,” Capron said, “just to see the number 18 to 20 something-year-olds stop by and show respect for the flag has been remarkable. It’s been very cool”

Water causing problems on new Siesta Key tennis courts Weeks after the tennis courts opened, water bubbles started to appear cracking the court surface. Brad Gaubatz, Sarasota County project manager commented on this problem at the October SKA meeting. The county will install a new drainage system around the court, flatten the bubbled areas and recoat the court. Gaubatz stated that this should take care of the problem.

Commission approves Village signs
The County Commission on Oct. 21 unanimously approved a zoning code amendment to allow outdoor displays in the Siesta Key Village. Previously on Sept. 24, the board considered the amendment, and decided the amendment should have a one-year sunset date and more specific size and item regulations. Staff recommended approval of the amendment. The topic of outdoor displays has proved controversial in the past, and Commissioner Nora Patterson said she was relieved there appeared to be support for the modified ordinance. “The Chamber does support this,” Debra LynnSchmitz, Executive Director of the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, told commissioners. “One of the things the Chamber has agreed to do is to educate the small businesses on the ordinance.” According to the

The eCity recognition means through innovation and the internet, small businesses in Sarasota are attracting and growing their customer base. “This recognition affirms both the resolve of local businesses to be globally competitive and the strength of our local tech savvy workforce,” said Mark Huey, President and CEO of the EDC of Sarasota County. With this designation, Sarasota joins the ranks of America’s leading cities in the digital economy. Other Digital Capitals of America include: Ann Arbor, MI; Tempe, AR; Ashland, OR and Reno, NV.

The new owner of a gateway property to the Key did not delay getting to work on renovations. New Jersey rental owner Daniel Jones bought the Tides Inn Motel and Sunset Lodge at 1800 Stickney Point Road for $1.5 million Sept. 5, from Siesta Vista Condominiums, a firm that had previously planned to redevelop the property, according to Sarasota County building permit records. About a month after Jones bought the motels, renovation work was underway. Improvements—which will likely continue through this month [November]—include new exterior paint and interior renovations. The new owner is giving the property “a facelift,” said Misty Servia, planning department manager with King Engineering, representing Jones’ company Siesta Promenade Cottages LLC. “They are moving like crazy,” Servia said of the progress. Jones plans to operate the motels as renovated resorts. Jones is also seeking approval from the county for changes to the parking lot, which will make parking more efficient, Servia told Siesta Sand. The Tides Inn Motel and Sunset Lodge are located across Stickney Point from the Siesta Promenade development, slated for 250,000 square feet of retail space and a 150-room hotel.
Siesta Key Merchants Association, 95 percent of retail businesses are in support of this But Patterson and Commissioner Christine Robinson said they hope the amendment doesn’t signal problems in the Village. Robinson voted for the ordinance, but the commissioner said she was nervous about creating extra code enforcement responsibilities on Siesta Key. “If this becomes a weapon between businesses who are competing against each other, I don’t want to participate in any of that,” Robinson added. “If we have too many problems, the next go-around you may not see my support then.” Patterson said she was also worried about the look and feel of the Village if the signs get “out of hand.” “I hope it works,” Patterson said. Under the ordinance, the county can revoke a sign permit if a store or business is in violation of the rules, county staff said.

An extension east of 75 Sarasota County commissioners approved a proposal to extend Lakewood Ranch Boulevard south to Fruitville Road in Sarasota County. The vote was 4-0 on Oct. 8, with one commissioner recusing herself because of a conflict of interest. When complete, the extension is expected to provide a north-south connecting road in a growing region. The extended roadway east of Interstate 75 will serve future residents of the housing and business development proposed by Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch Inc., and for the Villages at Lakewood Ranch South. Lakewood Ranch Boulevard now ends near the Lakewood Ranch Corporate Park and Communications Parkway just south of University Parkway.

Medical firm secures $28 Million infusion RPS Diagnostics, a developer, manufacturer and marketer of rapid point-of-care diagnostic tests, announced the closing of $28 million of financing with OrbiMed. The $28 million, combined with preceding financing, allows the Sarasota-based company significant flexibility as it continues to grow and advance toward profitability. The company is trying to meet unmet health care needs in the diagnostic marketplace.
Changing ownership One of downtown’s most centrally-located retail centers has sold. The Whole Foods Marketanchored retail center was sold to a Daytona Beach firm for $19.1 million in October. Consolidated-Tomoka Land Co. purchased Whole Foods Market Centre, which includes 59,000-square-feet of retail space and a parking garage. The seller was Casto Southeast Realty
Service, the original developer. Casto will continue to lease and manage the property. The center is 98 percent leased, with Whole Foods Market taking up 36,000 square feet. The deal is part of a 1031 tax exchange for Consolidated-Tomoka. “While approximately 61 percent of the property is leased to Whole Foods for approximately 10 years, the remaining 23,000 square feet of retail space will afford us the opportunity to further enhance our returns beyond the initial yield of this investment as downtown Sarasota continues to grow, with a projected 1,000 hotel and urban residential units expected to be delivered over the next five years,” CEO John Albright said in a written statement.

News Up & Down the Trail Bayfront land, Sarasota Bayfront 20:20 is looking for community input before moving forward. The group held two public workshops in October. The group, whose work has been endorsed by the City Commission, has also recently launched a website (http://www. sarasotabayfront2020.com/) and is encouraging the public to use social media to participate in the conversation with the hashtag #CanYouSeeIt. The group seeks to create a project that establishes a cultural and economic legacy for the city while also ensuring public access to the Bayfront. In addition to the city land, it is considering how adjoining private property, such as the former Quay site, could fit into a grander vision for the area. It plans to present the insight it gathers at a future Sarasota City Commission meeting.
Venice City Council member’s husband has construction fine dismissed Jeannette Gates, a Venice City Council member, is also a partner in a Venice-based construction company, Beechwood Builders, along with her husband Jeff Gates. Back in August, the general contracting company was cited by the city construction board for beginning a construction job before the building permit was posted at the site. That particular violation carries a hefty $1,500 fine. Jeff Gates and his attorney Greg Roberts went before the Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals earlier this month to state their case, which was that the city’s building department was already in possession of all the pertinent filing paperwork prior to the deadline, but for some reason, did not issue the permit in time. Though a stop work order was immediately issued, when the permit did finally come through, it had been backdated to show a date before the one on the citation. However, the Construction Board showed its flexibility by voting 5-1 to dismiss the citation, while stating for the record that while they believed Gates did intend to get a building permit in time, technically, he did break the rules.

Salvation Army Venice installs new officers The Salvation Army is one of the largest and best-known charitable organizations in the United States, with 1,224 locations. According to their national website, 80 cents of each dollar they collect supports their missions across the country, which include disaster relief, food missions, children’s programs and more. Here on the Suncoast, the Venice Corps offers many types of services to its surrounding community, and even operates a local thrift shop that helps to generate money to assist people in need. Recently, Lts. Scott and Andrea Hoover were appointed as Venice Corps officers, from their previous post in Stuart, Florida. In their new positions, the couple will be responsible for overseeing the 38 people who work in the thrift store, as well as in the Venice and North Port offices. Their additional duties include responsibility for the children’s ministry which is held on Thursday evenings following the after-school program. The Salvation Army is a taxexempt 501(c)(3) organization. Contributions are deductible for Federal Income Tax Purposes to the extent permitted under Section 170(b)(2) for corporations.
America in Bloom awards recognizes the city of Venice National beautification program A m e r i c a i n B l oom may not have given the city of Venice one of its major rewards at its annual Philadelphia conference, but an environment efforts special mention made for a nice consolation. America in Bloom is the only national awards program of its kind that actually sends judges to physical sites to not only evaluate what is already there, but to also offer suggestions for future improvements. Participants are evaluated on six criteria: heritage preservation, floral displays, environmental awareness, urban forestry, landscaped areas and overall impression. They are also judged on their interaction and involvement with their communities. Venice was entered in the 19,001
to 24,000 population category, and competed against like-sized cities. The city received praise from the judges for community involvement, in regard to its ability to mobilize volunteers. The judges were also pleasantly surprised to learn that Venice has 42 parks. As far as suggestions for what might be done better, they advised that the city adopt an ordinance that would promote the planting of more trees in those parks. After learning of the results of the program, the Venice City Council agreed to support participation in the program next year, and also the Venice Area Beautification Inc.’s efforts to obtain the exclusive “Five Bloom” rating from America in Bloom.
Venice churches agree to offer short-term housing to homeless As it becomes more and more difficult for the homeless to find safe and legal shelter in Sarasota County, 13 Venice area churches are in the process of adopting a program that will offer the displaced some temporary relief. Six of the 13 churches so far have voted to start a Family Promise program, designed to help homeless families get back on their feet. The idea is that the churches would commit to using some of their available space, such as classrooms, for one week four times a year, in order to house homeless families. The program itself would provide cots, bedding, food and transportation to and from the churches for the families. According to statistics gathered by Family Promise proponents, there are 450 school-aged children in Venice, North Port and Englewood who are currently homeless. Those figures do not include other family members like parents and siblings who are not yet in school. Family Promise director Diane Penick said the hope is that all 13 churches will be on board by the end of the year so the program can be initiated for south Sarasota county families by early 2015. For more information about this 501(c) (3) nonprofit program, visit www.FamilyPromiseSarasota.com.

|Dining on the Water at Boatyard Waterfront Bar & Grill Waterfront dining has a charm all its own and The Boatyard Waterfront Bar & Grill does not disappoint. The outdoor bar has that casual laid-back atmosphere where you can soak up the sun with a drink in hand while watching the boats go by. Where outdoor dining allows Mother Nature a seat at your table with the fresh scent of saltwater permeating the air and where unexpected guests may, at any given time, swim or fly by for a visit. Located on the mainland side of Stickney Point Bridge, the southern bridge to Siesta Key, at Mile Marker # 62, the restaurant can be reached by land or water, and docking is available. Its outdoor patio, covered deck and inside dining room sit higher than most other waterfront restaurants, giving patrons a bird’s eye view of the Intracoastal Waterway. It is open for Lunch and Dinner daily and will accept reservations. The “Reef Bar” has both outdoor and indoor seating, and is a local favorite, celebrating Happy Hour from 2 to 6 p.m., every day. |From a Bounty of Volunteers to Intrigue in the Pumpkin Patch In Praise of Breasts...
The recent Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer walk at the Sarasota Polo Club featured great weather and great scenery, including an inspiring view of polo ponies trotting about in the long early morning light in nearby pastures. Then there was the enthusiastic field of walkers donating their time and dollars in support of breast cancer research. Also adding to the festive atmosphere, local high-school cheer leading squads joining together to urge the participants on with a rousing cheer of“BIG OR SMALL, SAVE THEM ALL! BIG OR SMALL, SAVE THEM ALL!”
Mall Opens, Traffic Apocalypse Averted In the run-up to the grand opening of the new UTC mall at University Parkway and I-75 you would have thought the new center’s acronym was destined to mean Unmitigated Traffic Calamity, not the intended University Town Center. But lo-andbehold, the doom sayers were wrong again. The new mall’s 4100 parking spaces were more than enough to accommodate opening day crowds and avert the traffic apocalypse some had predicted. With only minor exceptions traffic moved relatively well throughout opening day...certainly better than it does on a nice beach day during the season with tourists and locals alike trying to cross the Stickney Point Bridge on their way to Siesta Beach. So where did all the apocalyptic predictions come from? Could it be close-in retailers – especially downtown – longing for a bit of traffic of their own? If so, they should realize the real threat to downtown retail isn’t from the new mall, but rather from the growing homeless population. On a recent walk down Main Street for some lunch, I was hit up for a “donation” twice inside of one city block. It’s the kind of shopping experience people remember, no matter how good the service, price or selection at the shops and restaurants patronized.
Speaking of Predictions... An AP story ran last week under the headline: Extreme Conditions
Not Expected this Winter. The story quotes Mike Halpert of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as saying we shouldn’t expect a repeat of last year’s extreme conditions, vis-a-vis the widely reported polar vortex. But it’s not until you get to the second-to-last paragraph of the piece that its real value becomes apparent. “NOAA didn’t predict the extremes in last year’s winter forecast,” it explains. Something to keep in mind the next time (anytime?) some government agency makes a prediction, no? (I’m particularly thinking about all those calming press releases coming from the CDC recently...).
Symptom of Ebola Missed by CDC Speaking of the CDC, financial writer David White pointed out an Ebola symptom overlooked by the agency: namely, behavior characterized by an overwhelming need and desire to get on an airplane or cruise ship and thereby expose hundreds to possible infection.
Lewis’ Heroes... North Port City Manager Jonathan Lewis’ initial response to allegations that city employees were given cheat sheets by city supervisors in advance of FEMA tests designed to allow city workers to be paid by the federal government in the event of a hurricane or some other disaster was something straight out of a TV sit-com. It seems he saw no reason to investigate the matter as reported in the Herald Tribune, since no employees had come forward to directly report the alleged cheating to him or anyone else in the city. The fact that a group of employees instead went to the press with their concerns had no credibility he insisted. In essence, his position came down to the seemingly absurd proposition that the reporter could have made the whole thing up. His handling of the matter reminds me of Sergeant Schultz, the 1960s “Hogan’s Heroes” character who would predictably say “I see nothing, I know nothing!” anytime he was confronted with some scheme by the American prisoners he was guarding that
might complicate his life. With the city’s response to this and other recent issues (especially the scandal over sexual misconduct involving some North Port police officers) perhaps Sergeant Schultz’s catch phrase should be permanently added to the official North Port city seal.
Trouble in the Pumpkin Patch? In the wake of allegations of forgery in Polk County faced by Lazarus Fernandez, organizer of the Sarasota Pumpkin Festival scheduled for late last month at Payne Park, the obvious question is this: doesn’t the City of Sarasota run background checks on groups and individuals seeking permits for events on city owned property? The answer according to a recent WWSB story: apparently not. According to that report, last year’s festival also sparked controversy over tickets that were circulated with the words “FREE ADMISSION” emblazoned in large type across the top. But when presented at the gate would-be festival goers were informed the free admission was for children only and that parents would have to pony up for the full cost. Some felt duped, since what parent is going to deny their children a day in the pumpkin patch after building up expectations of the event for days in advance?
Sarasota’s Multiple Personality Disorder First Sarasota was named meanest city in the nation for its treatment of the homeless by the National Coalition for the Homeless (...something I never quite understood since if folks here are so mean to the homeless, why do they keep coming?). Then this past summer it was named as one of the country’s sexiest small cities (another dubious accolade based on what I’ve seen at the beach recently); and now Google has added yet another distinction, honoring Sarasota as the state’s one and only eCity for 2014. The criteria? What the search engine giant calls the city’s strong online business community. Mean, sexy and nerdy. No wonder the city commission is so conflicted.

Paula Peterson and Dr. Zane Zynda planned a small worry-free wedding exchanging vows on the beautiful shores of Siesta beach. Paula, who is a Realtor with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty in Venice and Zane, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine here in Sarasota, met at an office party over a year ago. Both recall feeling an instant spiritual connection. They credit psychic, Donnarose Melvin for orchestrating their initial encounter. “Twin Flame” is the description Paula uses to express the cohesiveness of their relationship. “We love living
a healthy lifestyle. We enjoy going to the gym, eating organic foods, riding bikes, meditating, watching the sunset and stars, world politics, spiritual growth and development,“ says Paula. They both agree their relationship is effortless because they make their relationship a priority. Siesta Key Beach holds a special place in their hearts and brings back the memory of their first date. “We took a blanket and we watched the sunset and stars and talked until late in the night. We have been together every day since that night,” says Paula. So having the setting sun
on Siesta Key beach as a back-drop for their special union felt natural. And, their personalized vows speaks volumes of the deep commitment they feel towards each other. I, Paula/Zane, see you, Zane/Paula, my twin flame. I will always love you with my heart, my mind, my spirit and my soul. I hold sacred your trust, your happiness, your growth and your visions. And I entrust myself to you to hold me sacred as well. Their honeymoon was spent at a secluded romantic cabin in the mountains on the French Broad River in Hot Springs, North Carolina, with their little puppy, Gizmo in tow.

“Perfection!!!” What a wonderful experience we had last night. Our meals were not only delicious, but plentiful. Perfectly chilled Martini and bread pudding for dessert to die for!!! A very comfortable and well-done restaurant. Service was ideal. This place has it all! A definite return when visiting from NJ. “Really Nice Dining Experience!” First time to Chianti and the restaurant exceeded my expectations. My wife and I were at Chianti with friends who had been there before. Angelo was our server and he was great! I quickly felt like family and once he found out that I like seafood and that I had a gluten allergy he told me to forget the menu and that he would take care of everything. I had a great mixed seafood dish in a very tasty tomato based broth. It was fantastic. We also had grilled octopus that was excellent and a very good veal parmigiana. All in all the food and

It was great. At dinner there was outdoor entertainment and the guy singing sounded awesome. He sung a variety of old and new popular songs. We requested “Sweet Caroline” and he played it perfectly. We were bummed when his set was finished. We were there celebrating several birthdays and had brownie sundaes with lit sparklers for dessert. Eric brought a special dessert for my youngest daughter who has allergies. It also had a lit sparkler on top which made her feel extra special.

“You must go!!!” We have been to the Chianti Ristorante Italiano several times. The most recent was really special. A tenor, Joe Spinella performed and what a wonderful evening it was. He is a tenor and also a magician. He strolls around the place and has a delightful selection of beautiful songs. You must have a reservation because the place is sold out. Now about the food. We have not tried absolutely everything on the menu, however everything we have tried is so very delicious. The fish is prepared perfectly, with lovely sauce, the lamb chops cooked to our request perfectly, and pasta is perfect. We think it is the best Italian restaurant in town, maybe the best restaurant in town. It is our favorite. The service is friendly, and yet elegant. We cannot wait to return.

female defendant. She had been sitting on top of a taxi and climbed down to talk to the officers. When a deputy asked the woman her name, he got no response. He asked her what had happened and again, got no response. The woman had what appeared to be dried blood under her nose and when asked how it got there, she gave no answer. The woman then gave her name and said that she is with the FBI. The deputy asked what had happened in the taxi numerous times, as the woman would not answer. Her only response to the deputy was; “are you serious?” Another deputy made contact with the complainant/victim. The victim stated that the defendant had been at a bar in the village before being kicked out by the staff. The defendant had first refused to leave, but eventually left and got into the victim’s taxi. The victim asked the woman where she wanted to go and she replied; “just drive”. While the victim was driving, he stated that the woman attempted to hop from the backseat to the front seat and began grabbing, scratching and chocking him while he was driving the taxi. This resulted in a laceration under his right eye. The man stated that he tried pushing the defendant back and attempted to punch her in selfdefense. He then pulled over to call 911. The victim was unaware if he had actually hit the woman but the blood under the defendants nose corresponded to his story.

She stated that someone stole her purse from the back room of the restaurant while she was waiting tables. The purse contained a phone, some makeup and a bottle of prescription medication.
10/16/14 Burglary/ Felony 7000 Block Pine Needle Rd A man reported a residential burglary. Officers were informed that someone had pried open a bathroom window located on the side of the house. The complainant showed deputies where the window was located. They were able to see that the window screen had been cut, and the glass, hand cranked window was partially open. There was no evidence of footprints, fingerprints or any other disturbance near the window, which was elevated and very narrow. The complainant did note that an area rug had been moved from its original position in the bedroom. The complainant stated that he called the victim after discovering the residence in its current state, and told him that he discovered the wine cooler empty and the liquor above the refrigerator missing. The victim told him he had over $500 worth of wine in the cooler. No further disturbance appeared at the residence.

Piggybacking The Longboat Key town Commission is again thinking about burying its power lines along Gulf of Mexico Drive and are well on the way to putting a bond issue on the ballot next March. But this time it is not just aesthetics that is driving the agenda, it also is money. Florida Power and Light has decided that the old power poles that dot the long drive between Anna Maria Island and Lido Key have reached, their expiration date. Their solution is to “harden” the power lines. This means pulling up the old wooden poles and replacing them with tall concrete pillars which, frankly speaking, are not visually pleasing to everyone living on Longboat. They don’t remind us of the brown poles we grew up with onto which we used to staple pictures of our lost cats and dogs. FPLs reason for the hardening is strictly cost related. It is more expensive to replace wooden poles every “x” years than to replace concrete pillars every “y” years, and FPL wishes to cut costs. Remember cutting costs means increasing profits (not necessarily reducing electric rates). Dangling a portion of those savings in front of the commission creates a very enticing scenario as it would reduce the cost of burying the power lines, and that would save money for property tax payers. What it comes down to is, does the increase in taxes to cover a $19 million bond issue, estimated to be about $117 per year for 30 years, look better or worse than looking at concrete power poles. $117 per year (for a $500,000 home) for 30 years comes to $3,510, but no home owner is going to be paying that much as they will have moved by then. That only comes to $9.75 per month (two Starbucks coffees), most of which will be paid by future owners of the home. One cost consideration that the commission should factor into the equation is that if concrete pillars save money over wooden ones, does burying the cables save money over
But hey, maybe all this will soon be forgotten and after November 4th we can let things drift again. That is, until the next election.
ugly concrete. And if so, should FPL be giving Longboat Key even more of a financial break.
It’s that time of year.... again
ANATOMY OF A TRINIDAD
Nit-picking words
Yes, on November 2nd we turn our clocks back. Specifically from 3 AM to 2 AM. Most people are not too happy that sunsets will be coming an hour earlier but the very small benefit is that we get one hour’s extra sleep that first Sunday morning. But no, actually that is not the time related event we are now discussing.....it is election time. One can tell because all elected officials and their challengers are saying they will cut taxes (or at least not raise them) and also increase revenue (by raising fees which, as you know, are not taxes). Carmel Monti, mayor of Holmes Beach, has again brought up the issue of paid parking at the Manatee Public Beach. He feels that such fees would generate a cool million dollars per year. And it would all be free (who doesn’t like free money) as it would be paid for by tourists. One detail to be worked out would be how to differentiate between Holmes Beach residents and tourists so that those out-oftowners are the only ones financially inconvenienced. Another would be whether to count county residents that live off key as honorary HB residents or to classify them as fee-paying tourists along with the snowbirds. One complicating factor is that Holmes Beach does not own the beach, it is county property and thus, county residents that are off key would not be too happy about being charged. Monti says another way to bring in additional revenue would be to charged for the free trolley. Charge and some percentage of people will not go to the beach (reducing the sale of hot dogs) while others will decide to drive. Those that drive will, believe it or not, also want to park at the beach. This will generate, not just congestion and parking problems, but also more money from parking fees.
A cat burglar is one who walks softly, like a cat. So a car burglar is one who........drives up to the place he or she burgles? No, they usually walk so that they are more unobtrusive (sort of like a cat). Steals cars? No, that would be a car thief. Someone who steals from cars (actually from the owner of the car)? Bingo. Well, in August a car burglar stole from two cars in downtown Sarasota. And now, that same (or a copycat) miscreant struck again, this time in Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island. The Holmes Beach burglaries netted the perpetrator over $2,000 in power tools in the first instance and two passports in the second. Another way of looking at this is that one person’s means of livelihood were stolen and a second person’s (especially if they were to fly to Europe in the next day or two) vacation possibly destroyed. Quite devastating for simply leaving one’s car unlocked. This brings to mind a couple of interesting thoughts. If a driver does not fully stop when making a right-hand turn and hits someone who is crossing the street without looking, the insurance companies use the term contributory negligence relative to both parties. So, are people who do not lock their car doors contributing to the crime by being negligent or are they just exercising their constitutional right to be....... forgetful? And if they contribute to the crime by being negligent are they being criminally negligent by enticing someone to steal from them and should therefore go to jail for contributing to the delinquency of a minor? The point of all of the above is that theft from autos could probably be cut in half if more people would just lock their car doors.

Sarasota History
|Gulf View Inn
Author: Ann A. Shank, former County Historian(Courtesty: Sarasota County History Center)
The Gulf View Inn was built as the Sarasota Beach Lodge on the Gulf side of Siesta Key at the beginning of 1925. The Sarasota Beach subdivision had been platted in late 1924 by the Crescent Beach Development Co. and included the area approximately bordered now by Ocean Blvd., Avenida Del Mayo and Avenida Del Mare. The use of Spanish street names reflected the Mediterranean theme in much of Sarasota’s 1920s development. Although divided into more than 800 lots, the subdivision was largely undeveloped until after World War II. Perhaps a disincentive to visitors, the road out to Sarasota Beach was reportedly awful sandy, narrow and bumpy. A small item in “This Week In Sarasota” in early 1925 stated that the county, had used a road drag, to smooth out some of the ruts and holes, but the dangerous curves and narrow spots remained. “This Week In Sarasota” reported the lodge had been built in 16 working days for Traylor
and Whipple, a real estate company which needed a place, to entertain and house potential buyers. To introduce Floridian’s to the beauty of Sarasota Beach, Traylor and Whipple hired buses to bring the curious and the interested to Sarasota. What better place to house them than in a company hotel on the beach! The above 1925 photo was in the collection of Carlos “Red” Massy, pianist and leader of a band which played at the Gulf View Inn “Lodge” dining room at night. In the afternoons they played at the Mira Mar Hotel (then on Palm Avenue) to attract real estate buyers to Traylor and Whipple’s (and then Whipple and Kenny’s) real estate offices in the Mira Mar complex. The architectural style of the Gulf View Inn was an unusual mixture. The exterior was Mediterranean Revival, in keeping with the theme of the subdivision. The interior, in contrast, looked
like a rough-hewn hunting lodge. The public area was the full height of the building, with, cypresstimbered walls, tree-trunk pillars, a large coquina-rock fireplace and a pool with a fountain in the center of the lobby. Massy noted on the back of one photo that “there were alligators in the pool” when he played there. By the 1930s, advertisements for the Gulf View Inn indicate a shift in its function and clientele. Instead of appealing to the potential real estate buyer who was in Sarasota for a short stay, the Inn was portrayed as a winter home for
families looking for a social life different from that offered by the “transient” hotels. Steam heat in every room, excellent cuisine and free motor service to Sarasota and, the Bobby Jones Golf course were provided. Wilson K. Whipple, formerly of the Whipple and Kenny real estate company, managed the Inn. Although the 1925 newspaper announcement promised that a much more elaborate structure would soon replace the temporary lodge, in fact the hotel was used for nearly 60 years. Not until the early 1980s did the Siesta Gulf View Condominiums take its place. While the inn endured, the beach changed. In the 1920’s there was a wide expanse of sand in front of the building. By the end of the 1930s, waves lapped a seawall near the building. Today, with much sand accretion, the wide beach has returned.

Correctly pronounced “Passtee” (not “Paystee”!) they have been staples of British snacking for centuries. 4 & 20’s are buttery circles of melt-in-the-mouth fine pastry sealed turnovers containing the variety fillings, 10oz big, brushed with egg and baked golden brown. To be eaten on the go… or served with additional sides on a plate. And they’re really handsome too. Their ‘Original Cornish Pasty’ (Angus steak, Potatoes, Onions & Rutabaga), Chicken with Broccoli & Cheese, Shepherd’s Pie, Spinach & Feta and Curried Veggie or Beef are just a few of the many varieties, together with good old British favorites like Steak & Kidney Pie & Cheese & Onion. Pet Talk
Snapshots of Island Visitors
By Dr. Anne Chauvet
Q: Why is it not recommended to serve chicken and turkey to my dogs? A: It is fine to serve your dog a boiled chicken or turkey breast. Feeding your pooch some meat from the Thanksgiving table, however, is a different story. If you must share the turkey with your dog, cut the meat up into bite-sized pieces. Also, consider choosing the white meat over the dark – it’s a little blander and easier to digest. When placing the meat in your dog’s bowl, be sure to remove all pieces of bone, fatty scraps and the skin. Fatty meat scraps can lead to pancreatitis, causing abdominal pain, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Cooked bones are often brittle and break easily into sharp pieces, which can lodge in the throat, stomach, and intestinal tract. Baked turkey skin is covered with spices and grease – not a good combination for your pup’s sensitive stomach. Q: What is Cushing’s Disease? Signs, treatment? Which breed is at risk? A: Cushing’s disease is actually a hyperactive adrenal gland due to pituitary disease.
Hyperadrenocorticism, as it is called, can be caused by Cushing’s or adrenal tumor/cancer. The disease leads to excessive steroids (cortisol) in the blood. Common symptoms are: pot bellied look, loss of muscle mass, darkened skin pigment, loss of hair (usually symmetrical over the flanks and back) and increased urination and thirst. The diagnosis is made by blood tests: ACTH stimulation test or dexamethasone suppression test. Sometimes an ultrasound of the abdomen is recommended and in cases of suspected Cushing’s, an MRI or CT of the brain is performed to check if the pituitary gland is overly large. Surgery may be helpful in adrenal cancer, but most of the cases are managed medically. Q: I have 2 dogs and a cat. My daughter is begging for a ferret. Will these three species get along? A: It depends a lot on the personality and characteristics of the new ferret and your pets. In general, ferrets are group animals and love the company of other pets. Playful and friendly, ferrets usually fit right in. Don’t fret, however, if your cat ignores the
new ferret at first. It takes cats a while to get used to a new lively pack member. Your dogs should do just fine, but remember that some dog breeds (such as some terriers) were bred for the purpose of hunting small game, so might be tempted to chase ferrets by instinct. Large dogs may inadvertently hurt a ferret in play, territorial dogs might snap at a ferret if the ferret gets too close to its toys or food. It is possible for a dog, especially a larger one, to seriously hurt a ferret by accident or just by natural dog behavior, so be cautious.

Top: Greg enjoying his sailboat from SRQ. Bottom: Consuela from Columbia, Mauricio from Brazil and Mike from Indiana.
Every Sunday is a perfect time to come to the Key for some wonderful entertainment. I’m talking about the Siesta Key Drum Circle that takes place each Sunday starting about an hour before sunset and lasting until sunset. The gathering meets up just south of the main pavilion - just follow your ears and watch for the swelling crowd. Please note the following rules of
etiquette that need to be observed at the Drum Circle so that all can enjoy the experience: the inside of the drum circle is for participants only, not for people standing around. Feel free to enter the circle, take a picture and dance, but always keep moving. Never play someone’s drum without getting clearance from the owner. Always ask before borrowing other people’s property, especially hula
hoops. Flash photography and bright video lights are distracting, so photograph during daylight or use a night vision camera. And finally, please do not drink alcohol or smoke inside the circle and respect our beach by placing all trash in the appropriate receptacles. Photo by Emy Stein.

Old –Tyme Flavors for Young and Old April, 2013 marks the month when Capt. Curt’s introduced their very own soda. The owners did some extensive researched until they found the right mix of ingredients and flavor. According to Brad Stewart, one of the owners, they attribute the great taste not only to the ingredients used in the
brew, but the quality of the water was a key factor in producing their brand. The soda comes in six delicious flavors; Old-Tyme Root Beer, Granny’s Cream Soda, Crabby Grape, SnikiTiki Black Cherry, Crabby Orange and Crabby Raspberry Lime Rickey. Once empty, the bottle becomes a unique take home souvenir
featuring their four crab character labels; Crabby, Granny, SnikiTiki, and the Backroom Saloon Cowboy Crab. You can also buy a handy carry out 4-pack at Captain Curt’s giftshop across the parking lot. Capt. Curt’s Village, 1200 Stickney Point Rd, Crescent Beach, 941-349-3885

SIESTA SAND November 2014 • www.siestasand.net
The Man Behind Siesta Key’s Signature Rum Rum cakes were soon left behind when Troy zeroed in on making his own rum. Under the banner of Drum Circle Distilling, he purchased a still, and began to experiment with the creation of Siesta Key Rum. The beautiful smallbatch still he purchased was customdesigned and crafted, and incorporated an extensive amount of copper. (Copper acts to smooth the rum, removing harsh molecules in the rum vapor before the rum has even left the still.) Avoiding more economical liquid flavorings used by many lower-priced distilleries, Troy made certain only real ingredients were used in Siesta Key rums. The resulting spirits were refined and full-flavored. He soon was producing what the Miami New Times called: “Probably the tastiest rum in the world.” Fascinated by the art of making rum, Troy developed all his own recipes for Drum Circle Distilling. He bought only the highest grade ingredients: molasses made from Florida sugarcane, specialty yeast, local honey, real spices and fresh toasted coconut. By 2010, the business had taken off, and he took on two partners, both longtime friends. Tom
Clarke had a background in computers, having run the databases for a Paul Allen startup in Seattle. Today he is COO of Drum Circle Distilling, and responsible for administering the business on a day-to-day basis. Ryan Adams was a co-founder of several sports car websites with Troy Roberts in the late 90’s. Today he’s in charge of “Quality Assurance”, which translates to his frequent samplings of Siesta Key Rums. Two other players serve on the Drum Circle Distilling team. The first is Jim Roberts, Troy’s Dad, who acts as Chief Engineer. He’s known as the man who can build almost anything, including the barrel racks and tasting room. Jim was a champion formula car racer in his younger years, and an avid cruiser in both sail and motor boats. The final player is Nanci Vatovec, Troy’s fiancée who helps run the tasting room, labels bottles, creates art, works as a design consultant, walks the beach, cooks, and keeps track of the five energetic sons who still live at home, the youngest in 4th grade. A wedding is planned in March, 2015.
Several different varieties of rum are produced by Drum Circle Distilling: Gold, Silver, and Spiced Rum, and a limited edition Distiller’s Reserve. All of them are award winners, with Siesta Key Spiced Rum garnering the most prizes. Cooking Light magazine has called it “Dangerously Drinkable.” Wine Enthusiast magazine awarded it 91 points, and labeled it as “Best Buy.” Garden and Gun magazine called it “as smooth as beach glass.” Caribbean Journal wrote: “The small-batch spiced rum made in Sarasota continues to amaze.” Siesta Key’s Distiller’s Reserve Solera Blend ages in barrels in a traditional solera method, meaning that the oldest rum is never fully emptied from the barrel. The result is unique special spiced rum best enjoyed neat or on ice, infused with the flavors of spice, cinnamon, pumpkin, nutmeg and caramel. Siesta Key’s Beer Barrel Finish Spiced Rum is the result of collaborations with craft brewers. Each batch has spent time in barrels that were previously used to age craft beers. Since the barrels are all

different, each batch of this rum has its own distinct flavor. Batch 1 of this Beer Barrel Finish was released in the fall of 2014. The barrels from this first batch came from Cigar City Brewing where they held a Belgian Quad called “Forgotten Island.” Batch 2 barrels were originally used to hold Distiller’s Reserve Spiced Rum. These barrels were then loaned to JDub’s Brewing where they held Scotch Ale. Now the barrels are back at Drum Circle Distilling where they are putting a Beer Barrel Finish on a new batch of Spiced Rum. Siesta Key Gold Rum is aged in charred American oak barrels to bring out its wonderful color and vanilla notes. This is a high quality, smooth and flavorful rum which is truly a labor of love. You can try all these products out at The Drum Circle Distilling Tasting Room and Gift Shop. Located at 2212 Industrial Blvd., it is open several afternoons a week for sampling and tours. www.drumcircledistilling.com

Water World
Captain Jim Klopfer
Notes from the Island Fishmonger
Adventure Charters 941-371-1390 November offers Siesta Key anglers diverse opportunities. A wide variety of species are available this month, and multiple techniques will be successful. The key is adapting to the conditions; weather will become a factor at times. Water temperatures will be falling as it cools off and the days become shorter, and this will trigger fish to feed. Both Big Pass and New Pass will be productive spots to fish this month. Pompano will be targeted by many anglers, along with Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and ladyfish. Drifting with the tide and bouncing a jig off the bottom is a proven technique to catch pompano and other species. Yellow, white, and chartreuse pompano jigs work very well in deep, swift water. These jigs are small and compact, allowing them to sink quickly. These same jigs are effective in shallow water and on bars when cast out and retrieved back to the boat using short hops. Spoons and Rapala plugs are very effective when breaking fish are seen working in the passes. Pompano will also be taken on the deep grass flats, as will speckled trout, bluefish, mackerel, jack crevelle and other species. Soft plastics such as the Bass Assassin Sea Shad baits on a ¼ ounce jig head are extremely productive and a lot of fun to fish. A live shrimp either free lined or fished under a cork is the top choice for anglers who prefer live bait. Fish will begin moving south from the passes to the flats between Stickney Pt. and Blackburn Pt. and will be scattered over a large area. Successful anglers will fish quickly until the fish are located. Redfish schools will be thinning out in the shallow water, but there will still be plenty of fish in the pot holes, along mangrove shorelines, under docks, and around oyster bars. Rapala plugs, weedless gold spoons, and Bass Assassin Elite Shiners on a Pro Elite jig head are all excellent choices for probing the shallow flats. These same lures will also catch snook, along with

speckled trout and jack crevelle. Snook will be migrating through these areas on their way to their winter haunts and will be feeding heavily. Points, bars, and docks with current are prime ambush spots for game fish. Large live shrimp are deadly when fished under docks, although it will not allow anglers to cover as much water. Night fishing under lighted docks and bridges will also produce a lot of snook this month. King mackerel, Spanish mackerel, false albacore, cobia, and sharks will bend rods and test drags in the inshore Gulf of Mexico, provided the severe fronts stay away. Point of Rocks on Siesta Key is a prime fall spot to either sight cast to breaking fish or troll plugs and spoons. Live bait will also produce, especially once fish are located. Live blue runners and threadfins slow trolled on a “stinger” rig will catch some very nice kings along with sharks. Drifting a live shrimp or small bait fish will catch plenty of Spanish and albies.

Who’s Playing Tonight
By Mike Sales
Ted Stevens
|An interview with Ted Stevens The first time I saw Ted Stevens was at the Drift Inn on Anna Maria Island, where every local musician winds up playing, but I instantly recognized the polish, with which Ted stood out from the crowd. I later had the opportunity to see him with his band (The Doo-Shots) and found that what I’d seen before was just a hint of what they bring to the stage…
WPT: Were you a guitar player or singer first? Ted: Guitar
and played part time, but was playing fulltime by the second year.
WPT: When did you start playing? Ted: When I was 18…after graduating high school.
WPT: I’d imagine your experience made it pretty easy to get up and running here? Ted: The scene here, with its demographic, was actually more receptive to my kind of music than where I came from. Certain enthusiast kids kept the roots rock alive there, but around here, I found people had a connection to the music from when it was new. It was a refreshing surprise.
WPT: When did you start gigging? Ted: When I was 20.
WPT: Where are you from? Ted: Warwick, Road Island
WPT: How did you get to Sarasota? Ted: I’d wanted to come to Florida for the fishing, the water and the lifestyle for as long as I can remember. I’d heard about Sarasota from a friend, so when the scene I was playing in Las Vegas started to dry up, I took the opportunity to move here. WPT: How did you get to Las Vegas? Ted: I toured, through a management company, as the band leader of the backing bands for “The Drifters”, The Platters”, “The Marvelettes”, “Percy Sledge” and other Motown and Doo Wop acts from that era. We toured the East Coast, from Maine all the way down to DC, until they started booking theater shows in Vegas for extended amounts of time and asked me to come out there. I wound up doing that full time for nearly 15 years… the last 6 being in Las Vegas. WPT: And how long have you been here? Ted: 5 years. WPT: How long did it take you to get established professionally on the Gulf Coast? Ted: During the first year, I checked out the scene, networked
CLUB
choose what I get out of it, based on what I’m willing to put in.
WPT: How often do you currently play? Ted: I play 12 to 18 shows per month. WPT: Where all do you play? Ted: We play weekly gigs and festivals in Anna Maria, Siesta, Punta Gorda, you know, this region… within an hour of here. We also head out to Ocala & Leesburg and do some bike festivals. WPT: “We”, meaning, “Ted Stevens and the Doo-Shots?” Ted: Yes, and I play some solo gigs, like “LeBarge Tropical Cruises” every week. WPT: What kind of music do you play? Ted: I like to play lots of different styles, but am at my best playing and singing rockabilly, roots rock and old school rock & roll, as well as originals that go into every show. WPT: What can people expect when they come to a show?
Ted: Dance music; high energy with lots of crowd banter and a good visual show from a band that dresses up. The bass player plays an upright bass. We go out into the crowd and dance with the girls and the drummer is really entertaining as well…swing, rockabilly and we try to get everybody involved. WPT: I must say that you and your band put on a very high caliber show; how much of what you do is rehearsed? Ted: We develop our act by adding things as we go. I learned a lot from working with acts like “The Temptations”, where they have everything choreographed and every element planned, right down to their shoes. It becomes a clear-cut choice between being professional and being…whatever. WPT: Do you have a CD out? Ted: We have 2 CD’s out and a third currently in production and due out this winter. WPT: What’s your favorite thing about being a professional musician? Ted: I like the freedom. I like getting to make my own schedule and play when, where and what I want. I appreciate the privilege to
WPT: What are your career goals? Ted: I’m happy with what I’m doing. I was recently offered a job as a tribute act, but I really have no desire to go back on the road. I’d like to keep writing, release a CD every two years, play solo & band gigs, keep booking the festivals and private parties and keep it fresh…that’s the most important thing to me, is to keep it fresh. WPT: What’s your message to your audience? Ted: I appreciate that we can play originals and obscure rockabilly tunes to people who accept them with the same enthusiasm as the songs they all know. Once they hear our sound and see what we do, we don’t get requests for artists like Jimmy Buffet or Tom Petty, because they come out with an open mind and embrace us for what we’re about. I just want to say that I’m grateful to them for that. Island Humor [ Miss Beatrice, the church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married. She was admired for sweetness and kindness to all. One afternoon the pastor came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint sitting room. She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea. As he sat facing her old pump organ, the young minister noticed a cut-glass bowl sitting on top of it. The bowl was filled with water. In the water floated, of all things, a condom! When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat. The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and he could no longer resist. “Miss Beatrice”, he said, “I wonder if you would tell me about this?” pointing to the bowl. “Oh, yes” she replied, “isn’t it wonderful? I was walking through the park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground. The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet and that it would prevent the spread of disease. Do you know I haven’t had the flu all winter!” The pastor fainted.
[ The IRS suspected a fishing boat owner wasn’t paying proper wages to his deckhand and sent an agent to investigate him. IRS AUDITOR: “I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them”. BOAT OWNER: “Well, there’s Clarence, my deckhand. He’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1,000 a week plus free room and board. Then there’s the mentally challenged guy. He works about 18-20 hours a day, sometimes 6 or 7 days a week. I do provide a bonus every now and then; a bottle of Bacardi rum and a dozen Budweisers every Saturday so he can cope with life and occasionally gets to sleep with my wife”. IRS AUDITOR: “That’s the guy I want to talk to – the mentally challenged one!” BOAT OWNER: “That would be me. What would you like to know?” [ A child asked his father, “How were people born?” So his father said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on”. The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him,

“We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now”. The child ran back to his father and said, “You lied to me!” His father replied, “No, your mom was talking about her side of the family”. [ WIFE: “How would you describe me?” HUSBAND: ABCDEFGHIJK WIFE: “What does that mean?” HUSBAND: “Adorable, beautiful, cuddly, delightful, elegant, fashionable, gorgeous, and hot.” WIFE: “Awww, why honey thank you, but what does IJK stand for?” HUSBAND: “I’m just kidding!”

Mon Bartender of The Key
EAT HERE Siesta era 240 Avenida Mad 941.346.7800
[ A blonde, a redhead, and a brunette were all lost in the desert. They happened upon a lamp and began rubbing it. A genie appeared and granted them each one wish. The redhead wished to be back home. Poof! She was back home. The brunette wished to be lying on the beach with a tall drink in hand. Poof! She finds herself lying on Siesta Key beach with a cabana boy serving her a Pina Colada. The blonde said, “Awww, I miss my friends, I wish they were here”.
Name of Bartender: Phillip Spiced Rum & Cranberry Old Fashioned
Source: rachaelwhite.me This is a wonderful cocktail for Thanksgiving. The cranberry syrup gives the drink a vibrant color and the spiced rum pairs beautifully with holiday dishes. Ingredients 1 ounce cranberry syrup from this recipe: rachaelwhite.me/homemade-cranberry-sauce/
1 1/2 ounces Siesta Key Spiced Rum 1 teaspoon brown sugar 5 dashes bitters 1 strip of orange zest for garnish 1 rosemary sprig for garnish 2 or 3 fresh (or frozen) cranberries for garnish. Pour the cocktail through a strainer into a cocktail glass filled with ice. Serve garnished with the orange zest, cranberries and rosemary sprig.
Hometown: Sarasota Q: How long have you been bartending? A: 14 years. Q: What was the strangest or funniest thing you experienced at work? A: Spend time with family and friends. Q: How would you describe yourself? A: A perfectionist driven by passion when it comes to my craft. But I have a fun, out-going, very social personality.

Soulfully Yours Donnarose Q: Dear Donnarose, my fondest memories are during the winter holidays. However, most of the people who shared my memories are deceased. So it’s no surprise that I get the blues every year, and have to fake a smile at holiday gatherings. How do I change this pattern so I can genuinely begin enjoying my favorite holidays? Sincerely, Grace A: ~ “The joy in your past is still in your heart. Let it surface, and make a brand new start. “ -Donnarose Melvin You’re right by saying it’s a pattern that needs altering. And that pattern is in the form of your thoughts. Also, what makes us miss the old memories the most, are the parts where love was felt. So when the source of this love is gone, many feel a void. Consider bringing into the present some of the things associated with love and the people from your past. At one of your gatherings, you can share a recipe, ornaments, or specific music, etc. Or consider creating new holiday rituals associated with love, and bring it to a place to volunteer, or to anyone you choose. The thing is, you may not be able to be with your loved ones from years past. But you can certainly share the memories and what represented them, which is love. ~♥ Q: Dear Donnarose, how can I tell whether it’s my ego or my soul guiding me in my decisions? And, how do I stay connected to my soul to avoid these constant detours in my life? Thank you, Christine A: ~ “Our ego has a need to control, while our soul makes

inner peace its goal. ” ~Donnarose Melvin If after you made a decision, you are still questioning it repeatedly with a tense and uneasy feeling attached, that was your ego guiding you. The ego loves to keep us at a lower vibration, and in a state of confusion and fear. However, when you make a soul-based decision, your shoulders leave your ears, you have more of a relaxed confidence about it, and you feel more at ease and peaceful. Now to stay connected with your soul, which is One with all That Is, keep your thoughts in the light, especially the ones regarding your Self. Incorporate some form of meditation in your day. Acknowledge and embrace the Divine Presence with you daily in the form of angels, guides, God, or whatever you call your higher powers. Trust and know that They are here to love, support, and guide you towards decisions that are for your Highest good..always. ~ ♥ Donnarose Melvin is a professional psychic, medium and energy healer, whose pleasure is to assist clients worldwide. Food and Wine Pairings
Beaujolais and More… Wines for Thanksgiving It’s November and the Holidays are already upon us. It’s a wonderful time of year when we begin planning to get together with family and friends for our annual celebrations. Many of us will adhere to traditions passed down through the generations, and some of us will venture out to create our own new traditions, hoping that future generations will embrace new ideas. Wine has been part of our holiday traditions for centuries. The type of wines we use in our celebrations has also changed over the years with more wines available now than ever before. In 19th century France, the villagers would await the early vintage of Gamay in Beaujolais and then celebrate the successful harvest. In 1985 the Beaujolais regions of Burgundy decided to all release their young Gamay wines on the same date, the 3rd Thursday of November, hence beginning this new tradition of releasing Beaujolais Noveau. Beaujolais Noveau has made its way into the American culture, mainly because of its release every year just before Thanksgiving. The wine is only fermented for 3
days and is extremely light with a relatively high level of acidity. It must be consumed within the first year or it will lose its quality. It was meant to be drunk as a table wine in which one could over indulge because of its lack of heartiness. If you are looking for a better quality wine in Beaujolais, then one must try one of their 10 Beaujolais Cru’s that can mature from 3 to 20 years depending on the type. Those are some really good Beaujolais’ A much more elegant grape from the Burgundy region is Pinot Noir. The Pinot Noir harvest is later than that of Beaujolais and is definitely worth the wait. With its silky smooth texture and lower acidity level, it’s our choice for your Thanksgiving Dinner. A great choice this year is Aspirations Pinot Noir. It’s a wonderfully fruity Pinot Noir with a mediumlight body and will enhance the flavors in your Turkey Dinner. Even the most discriminating palate will appreciate this wine. Prefer a white wine with your turkey? Our recommendation is Domaine du Vieux Chene Viognier from Vin de Pays, France. What? More French wine for an American holiday? Uh….Yes!
This Viognier is lighter and crisper than Viogniers from South Africa or Chile. The flavors dance on your tongue. Hints of apricot lace the forward and has a clean finish which makes this white a perfect complement for your turkey. What about starting some other new traditions? Last year we introduced an American Wine called Cran-Bec, a limited edition wine, which is a semi-sweet blend of cranberries and Malbec grapes. It’s a low-sulfite wine and is excellent with Turkey Dinner or Turkey Sandwiches. This wine is a must for those who are looking for something slightly sweet and for the skeptics, too. Cran-Bec has been so popular that it is now part of our Cellar Collection. Now we can’t forget about desserts. Do we suggest a dessert wine? Not exactly. Think about how you are going to feel after

eating all that food. And of course, you want to save some room for that pumpkin pie. What is light and great with pumpkin pie? An awesome German Piesporter
Riesling! It’s not overly sweet and it lets the flavor of the pumpkin pie shine through. Our favorite is Nollen Erben Piesporter Michelsberg Kabinett. Stop by the wine shop or give us a call for recommendations on planning your holiday dinner. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family from our family here at Siesta Key Wines! Siesta Key Association meeting notes Continued from page 2
Poor condition of Bike Trails
Many are overgrown around Sanderling. Trees are growing out over the white line, and many of the branches are too low. There is also crab grass growing out over the bike trail. Board Member Paul Wilkinson notified the County about this condition immediately. Truck Parking
Sheriff’s Department says that there is nothing in County Ordinances to prevent a truck from being parked in the village as long as it is moved every 72 hours. SKA is working with Siesta Key Village Association to put new ordinances in place to solve this problem. See the copy of the letter sent to the County drafted by President Michael Shay in Siesta Key Round Up.
Committee Reports
Environment —Catherine Luckner: Not much change. The county did approve funding for an independent study, and 7 firms are being considered, one of which will run the study. That decision will probably be made at the end of October. SKA is open to dredging so long as it will not harm anything. Nothing will happen fast, as no monies are available until 2015 at the earliest.
Post Disaster Redevelopment Place
The County does not want this issue to come up until 2015, when they will bring other parts of the
County into the plan. Catherine Luckner feels badly that Siesta Key does not yet have this plan in place. Many commissioners who have supported this plan will soon be leaving,
International Coastal Cleanup
Michael Shay reported that the last Cleanup went well in spite of rain. 20 volunteers showed up to pick up cigarette butts, water bottle caps, plastic covers for straws, etc.

Stand Up Paddleboards
Michael Shay emphasized that SKA is not against the sport: “We are concerned for the safety of the swimmers on our lifeguarded area of the beach. “ SKA takes the position that these Stand Up Paddleboards should not be allowed at beaches in the swim zone area.
Happy Hour Proposal
Beverly Arias is heading up a proposal to create a gathering for SKA members. Last month, SKA discussed having a Happy Hour at a Restaurant and charging $5. They are still looking for a place.
New Business
The next SKA Monthly Meeting will be Thursday, November 6th, at 4:30 pm. Someone from the Florida Department of Transportation will be at this meeting to discuss the issue of ROUNDABOUTS on Siesta Key.
Blooming this month: The garden strawberry is a widely grown hybrid species of the genus Fragaria. Strawberries are a colorful addition to the fall garden. In Florida, strawberries are grown as an annual. Purchase your plants early in November and obtain good, clean, diseasefree plants from nurseries or plant suppliers. Both bare-root transplants and potted plants are available. Set plants twelve inches by twelve inches apart mulched with black plastic, straw, or hay. Plants set in the fall begin to blossom in the cold. Berry production follows in the late winter and continues to late April. Planting new plants are best for each subsequent year.

Artist of the Month
By Diana Colson
|The High-Tech Art of Peter Stanick
A major artist lives in our midst, and his name is Peter Stanick. He is a master of the Pop Art style, manipulating digital images on the computer by using web construction software as a drawing tool. Peter Stanick received a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 1975, and a MFA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1977. He is the co-author of New Masters of Photoshop, published in 2001 by Friends of Ed in London. This book was revolutionary in its time, for it bridged the gap between fine art and computers. Born in Pittsburgh in 1953, Peter Stanick moved to Florida with his wife, Debbie, in 1990. Debbie is a business person, and she was looking for a place to open EXIT ART, a distinctive shop that would feature clothing, jewelry, and furniture, as well as the art of Peter Stanick. The couple took the leap and moved to Longboat Key in 1990, bringing with them their son, Pete, and daughter, Lorraine. Before long, Debbie found herself the proprietor of two shops: EXIT ART at the Charthouse (201 Gulf of Mexico Dr, Longboat Key); and EXIT ART at the Centre Shops (5380 Gulf of Mexico Dr., Longboat Key.) Peter Stanick would be fully occupied painting in his studio at home. The Wall Street Journal has called Stanick “one of America’s hottest contemporary painters.”
His canvases often have the look of giant video screens. A prolific artist, Stanick’s list of exhibitions is long, prestigious and international. His work hangs in many public collections, including:
his Broadway Paintings at One Art Space in New York. In 2014, his work was included in an exhibition at Saatchi Gallery in London. Most of his life, Stanick has painted on paper or canvas. In the past couple of years, however,
the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Osaka Museum of Art in Japan; the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh; Novestra in Stockholm; Continental Corporation in New York; Grasitel in Los Angeles; Landesbank Baden-Wurttemberg in Stuttgart; and Contact Music in London. The Evening Standard has said that this “U.S. pop artist may be the natural successor to the late Roy Lichtenstein with his bold cartoon scenarios which generally lambaste the art world.” Of Stanick’s 2007 exhibition at Lumas in Cologne, Lumas Magazine wrote: “Stanick is one of the few artists who is consequently committed to the digital process and produces immediately accessible works, which—with their Pop Art forms and colors—enrich our analogue spaces.” In 2012 itunes published three separate books about Stanick’s work. That same year he exhibited
he has been experimenting in different media. Currently, much of his work consists of ink on aluminum. “Aluminum has a certain appeal,” the artist says. “It gives a machine-like quality to the finished piece. The way I work relies highly on technology, and I want the final product to equate the process. “ Currently, there are several great uploads on u-tube Peter Stanick’s work, many of them featuring the artist himself on camera. Check out one or more of the following: STANICK NYC EXHIBITION; BEACH, BIKINIS, AND BEER; BROADWAY; I’M A JERK. These videos capture not only the man’s work, but also his artistic philosophy and colorful personality. To see Peter Stanick’s most recent work, go to www.stanick. com/2014. To see a few of his actual pieces, stop in at one of the EXIT ART shops on Longboat Key.

construction. Phase one included building the tennis courts and maintenance building. The first phase also included building one parking lot near the tennis courts. This lot was created with a special kind of pervious concrete that will allow better stormwater drainage after heavy rains. Phase two includes constructing two more parking lot areas, with extra parking spots open in time for the Crystal Classic sand sculpting competition in November. “The contractor is working really hard to turn over part of the phase two parking lot for the Crystal Classic event,” Gaubatz told Siesta Sand. “A lot of guys are working really hard to get that done.” One lot will also be made of pervious concrete. This phase also will complete the playground and picnic area, which will include two larger pavilions and several

smaller shelters. The biggest part of this phase, however, is the completion of the new east concession building. The new structure is already under construction. The goal is to finish the new concession area in phase two so the old one can be renovated in phase three. The east concession building will feature a handicap ramp that blends in with the structure and winds up through the seagrapes. The ramp “is a feature in and of itself,” Gaubatz said. The two pavilions and shade canopies are designed to “tie in with the vocabulary of the new architecture on site,” Gaubatz added. They will be constructed of pre-cast concrete. Phase three will consist mainly of finishing the partial demolition and remodeling of the existing concession stand, which will house sheriff’s and lifeguard offices and concessions. The historic

The Sarasota County project will also add a pedestrian esplanade and 143 additional parking spaces once work is complete, said Brad Gaubatz, Sarasota County Public Works Project Manager. Gaubatz expects crews to wrap up phase two of work in February, and complete the entire project by the end of 2015. The project broke ground in January, and the first phase wrapped up this summer. Sarasota-based Sweet Sparkman Architects is designing the structures. “We divided the project into phases so we could keep the park open during the entire construction,” Gaubatz said. Funding for the capital improvement project comes out of Sarasota County’s penny sales tax in the infrastructure surtax III and some Tourist Development Tax (TDT) funding. The beach will remain open through all phases of

Municipal Services Benefit Unit (MSBU), commercial borrow, and state grant funding. “The county is still finalizing an updated timeline for the project,” according to information provided by Sarasota County Media Relations Specialist Jason Bartolone. Coastal Engineering firm Humiston and Moore Engineers, Inc. is the design and permitting consultant working to secure federal and state permits for the project. Suitable sand sources have been found eight to ten miles offshore, in the Gulf of Mexico, according to Bartolone.
Turtle Beach renourishment in the works
New amenities at Turtle Beach
Crews will pump additional sand onto two miles of South Siesta Key, including Turtle Beach. An initial beach nourishment of the South Siesta Key Beach Area was completed in March, 2007. Erosion has progressed to the point where re-nourishment is needed, according to county officials. The plan is to add sand during a forthcoming project to the same stretch of shoreline, including Turtle Beach in the center of the project limits. The northern end of the project stops 2,000 feet south of Point of Rocks, and the area run south to a tapering end, just south of the southern-most home on Siesta Key. On Aug. 20, the County Commission discussed the estimated project costs and options to fund the project, including Tourist Development Tax,
In a second Sarasota County project, Turtle Beach’s public facilities will be receiving an upgrade. The $614,000 improvement project is slated to start in early 2015, and will take about six months to complete, Gaubatz said. The improvements include: a new parking lot with 35 additional spaces; a new playground; and two new picnic shelters. The project features a kayak launch inside the inlet and close to parking. “People can walk their kayaks right in,” Gaubatz said. Other improvements include: LED lighting; sidewalks through the park; underground drainage, and a rain garden storm water drainage area. The county is working on potential plans to add a gazebo.

|Before You Begin... Interest rates are low, your Siesta Key home is “tired” and you want a fresh look. Where do you start? If you begin by applying for an equity line on your home to remodel, trust me you have ample time to research your design options while that process is working. Banks are impossible these days (however I must say our local banks are willing to go those extra miles to help) So don’t despair, it can be accomplished!
Of course there is the dreaded appraisal process in a recovering real estate market... That is an entire article for another day. Professional references are mandatory. Before you do anything else, please begin with consulting local professionals. Local is practical, these are professionals who know the rules of the area. If you are not a current resident of Siesta Key, there is a definite learning curve living in Siesta Key
sun vs. the Midwest snow. By talking to an architect & interior designer, you will find what to expect from a construction project. We review interior space for function and sun patterns for an economic passive solar design. Although the end result should be aesthetically pleasing, you must begin with the function of the space. When you make an investment in your home, you are making an investment in your lifestyle. The
red flag I hear is the resale value consideration. If you are in fact only remodeling to sell your home, this is your priority. However, if you plan to live there, design for comfort. Remember, if your family and lifestyle are comfortable, that family looking to purchase will see the ease of use instead of making an effort to make it work. Design for yourself. Design for the moment. Design for the future.

Quarter 3 of 2014 is officially in the books and still on track to top 2013 and possibly the historic year of 2004. The first three quarters total 8,784 sales. September ended with 934 sales, beating out the previous September by 14 percent! If sales continue at this pace, we could see 2014 as the county’s best ever

|Levying of fines By Vanda Y. Bayliss, Esq Despite friendly, and perhaps not so friendly, requests to stop, towels are still hung over the balcony railings, cars continue to be parked on the lawn, and music continues to blare at 2 a.m. So what can an association do, short of filing a lawsuit, when a member simply refuses to follow the rules? One method of enforcing the governing documents, including violations of the declaration and rules, is by way of a fine. Both Chapters 718 and 720 of the Florida Statues, governing condominiums and home owners’ associations respectively, provide for the levying of fines by a board of directors. Before a board of directors may impose a fine, however, the board must receive approval to do so from an independent committee. The committee, which must be comprised of at least three members, may not include board members, their relatives, or members of their households. Certain “due process” procedures must be followed. The offending party must be given at least 14 days written notice of the intent to fine and must be given an opportunity to address the independent committee (often called a “fining committee” or “compliance committee”). After a hearing, at which the “offending” member is entitled to present witnesses and address the committee, the committee must decide whether the proposed fine is appropriate. The board may impose the fine only if the committee approves. The fine may
not exceed $100 per violation. If a violation continues over time, the fine may be levied for each day the violation continues, however, it may not exceed $1,000 total for a condominium. The fine levied by a homeowners’ association may exceed $1,000, but only if the governing documents specifically say so. With one exception, a fine may not automatically become a lien against the property. The exception is that a fine over $1,000 may become a lien if the governing documents of a homeowners’ association so provide. This is significant because a lien may provide the basis for a foreclosure action. Another method of collecting a fine is for the association to file a lawsuit, obtain a judgment for the amount of the fine, and then proceed to collect the judgment. Collection activity may include, depending on circumstances, garnishment of wages, seizure and sale of property, and foreclosure of the judgment. Additionally, if the association has the right to approve sales and leases, the association can withhold its approval if there are unpaid fines. Also, if there is a tenant in the property, the association may, if it follows the statutory procedure, demand that the tenant pay the rent to the association until the fine has been paid in full. While fines may be levied in the right circumstances, is fining a good method of enforcement? Not necessarily. The process can create more ill feelings and, in some cases, prod the offender to engage in more
disruptive behavior. Collection of the fine may be difficult, or impossible. On the other hand, ignoring “bad behavior” may not be fair to those who are suffering the consequences. There are times when fines are an appropriate and effective way to obtain a recalcitrant owner’s attention and cooperation. Fines seem to be particularly effective when a tenant is the basis for a fine as the fine maybe charged to the owner’s account. Owners will be less likely to renew the lease of such a tenant. Best practices dictate fines should be imposed only after other methods of achieving voluntary compliance have been exhausted. This column is not intended to provide specific legal advice and should not be relied upon for that purpose. Every situation is unique and this general discussion is not necessarily applicable to your situation. Please consult an attorney for advice regarding your particular situation.

St. Boniface Pet Blessing Another first at St. Boniface With dark clouds gathering in the sky and the possibility of rain, it was decided to bring the pet blessing ceremony inside the church this year. According to Grace Riker, coordinator of the event, it is the first time the pets were allowed inside the church since the pet blessings began in 2003. “It was very special having the service in the church,” said Riker. Rector, John Hall, along with Andrea (Andi) Taylor, and Ralph McGimpsey officiated the ceremony. With the exception of an occasional growl and some happy barks, all were on their best behavior. This annual event, sponsored by the Boniface EcoStewardship Team (BEST), is in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.
Alyssa and her buddy, Lulu have been coming to the pet blessings since Lulu was 7-years old – that was six years ago. That’s certainly a lot of dog years.
