The marina on the southern end of Siesta Key dates back to the 1950s when it was originally called Dixon’s Marina, and there weren’t any condos in the area and a fish camp was located nearby. Dixon’s Marina was located close to the former Midnight Pass Fishing Camp, which was established in the 1940s and located just to the south, according to documents provided by the Sarasota County History Center and newspaper accounts. A 1965 publication called Motor Boating described Dixon’s Marina as having facilities “for gas and oil, dockage, in and out service and complete motor and boat repairs.” Also at the time, Midnight Pass was open, and the owner of the marina was said to swim across the pass with his dog, recalled Ron Flynn, a realtor and former manager of the marina in the 2000s. Then in the 80s, after the fish camp had closed, a new owner purchased the marina and it became Midnight Pass Marina. In 2003, the marina again changed ownership when four investors purchased the property, renaming it Turtle Beach Marina. Continued on page 28

On Sept. 4, nearly six months since the Permit application notice, the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) responded to questions (RAI) from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). Questions from FDEP were extensive regarding the project with multiple areas of focus including project design, wildlife species protection, the requested volume of sand to be dredged, the choice of sand borrow sites and down drift consequences of the groin structure and placement. The FDEP sent their RAI on April 15, 2015 which coincided with the public presentation by the ACOE. The FDEP is reviewing the ACOE response and will determine if it satisfies the RAI or raises additional questions. FDEP Project Manager Chiu Cheng provided guidance on the process. “We will try our best to take any
external comments into consideration. As far as the review process for the response to RAI #1, the response was received on September 4, 2015. With the allotted 30 days to take action on this information, the Department will have to either 1) complete the application, 2) issue a partial response letter (if not all questions were answered in this response) or 3) issue an RAI #2 if some questions were inadequately answered and/or new questions directly develop from any of the responses. The date to undertake any of these actions will be Friday October 2, 2015.” The anticipated third party review by Atkins North America Coastal Engineering has been provided in ‘draft’ format to County Staff. A ‘draft’ is provided in advance of a Final Report to ensure all contracted scope of work was completed. Once reviewed by County Staff, a Final report and Executive summary
is issued. Primary areas of study contract include the following: “physical effects of the proposed shore protection project with focus on: a) The shoreline of Ted Sperling Park b) Siesta and Lido Key Beaches, c) Navigation in Big Sarasota Pass, d) the north shoreline of Siesta Key adjacent to the Pass, e) the no-action alternative”. County Staff have up to ten days for review and Atkins seven days to submit the Final Report. According to County Coastal Resource Manager, Laird Wreford, the study will be presented in final form to the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) who may then direct communication to FDEP. While this publication, Siesta Sand, and SKA is awaiting the final report to make further comments regarding the study, the draft appears to suggest, at minimum, a second RAI for the ACOE project. The Crystal Classic Sand Sculpting Festival scheduled to take place November 13 – 17, is a very large and expensive endeavor. These are the best artists in the world working in sand today. This year we have sculptors coming from Russia, Italy, Holland, Ireland and the Czech Republic, just to name a few. Unfortunately the event’s major sponsor from last year, our first national corporate sponsor, is not returning and other sponsors have been difficult to acquire. More help is needed. See page 8

Roadway Roundup: Stickney Point Changes; no decision on Beach Road roundabout By Roger Drouin

Two big changes are in the works for the southern access to the Key. www.CBsOutfitters.com • Since 1959 • Stickney Point Bridge Open 7 Days 7am-6pm 1249 Stickney Point Rd. Siesta Key underwent additional repair work last month, as crews demolished concrete on the drawbridge and made repairs. Construction work began in May to repair www.siestakeyassociation.com cracked concrete through the bridge. The Florida Department of Transportation also repaired damaged seawalls, upgrading the bridge control house, and painted and refurbished some mechanical and electrical components. • Closer to the Key, FDOT officials are proposing changes to the Stickney Point Road and Midnight Pass intersection to 5615 Midnight Pass Road, Room F improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. Speaker: Commissioner Alan Maio After hearing several complaints when at the Sept. Topic: The New Budget 1 SKVA meeting where the FDOT first presented a proposal public is always welcome with questions for our guests. for changes at the intersection, transportation officials presented a revised option during the meeting of the SKA, on Sept. 3. The new plan is a compromise. With the modified proposal the state agency still aims to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, but also seeks to accommodate traffic volume and mobility. The FDOT is proposing to tighten the right turning lane onto Midnight Pass Road, adding a raised concrete separator, and enhance pedestrian crossings. (See Rendering) The project would also extend a bicycle lane on Stickney Point Road.

MONTHLY MEETING Thursday, Oct. 1 • 4:30 PM St. Boniface Church
The right turn acceleration lane onto Midnight Pass would not be removed — as was proposed in the initial design plan. L.K. Nandam, District Traffic Operations Engineer, and Michael Kautz, Highway Safety Manager, discussed the proposed changes to the intersection at the Sept. 3 SKA meeting. The goal is to effectively encourage drivers to take the right turn more slowly from Stickney Point onto Midnight Pass. Nandem said FDOT was also trying to address the concerns raised at the SKVA meeting that the acceleration lane is a benefit to motorists. Commissioner Alan Maio spoke positively of the new design and said the modification — in only two days time — of the design plans shows how FDOT can work effectively to solve a challenge.
The project could be fasttracked because FDOT would hire a contract design-build firm. However, if it cannot be completed before Nov. 1, construction would commence after this tourism season. • As for the discussions about a possible roundabout at Midnight Pass Road and Beach Road, there has been no decision reached, FDOT officials said. But that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill. “There is no plan on that [roundabout],” added Michael Shay, SKA President. “Only nasty rumors.” FDOT officials have said they are considering a roundabout at that location to improve pedestrian safety. In January, officials said construction would happen in this upcoming fiscal year 2015-16 budget, if the agency moves ahead with the project.

Island Resident Gets Behind the Scenes Look at what Drives Trump By Robert Frederickson
We’re all familiar with the larger than life public persona of Donald Trump. But what’s he really like when there are no cameras around... when he’s out of the public eye, enjoying some down time at his weekend retreat? One Siesta Key resident has some firsthand insight that might shed some light on the subject. Eddie Ward, 47, owner of Eddie’s $1-a-Minute limousine service here in town, worked as Trump’s weekend chauffeur for two winter seasons back in 2007 and 2008. The ‘weekend place’ Trump would visit was no ordinary beach house getaway, but rather Mar-a-Lago, the former Marjorie Merriweather Post mansion built in the 1920s that covers 20 acres stretching from the Atlantic to Lake Worth Lagoon at the intersection of A1A and Southern Boulevard in Palm Beach. Trump bought the ‘fixer-upper’ back in 1985, restoring it to its former jazz-age glory and eventually turning it into the swanky private club it is today. Ward would run errands for Trump and his guests, drive the Donald, family members and visitors to Palm Beach’s tony Worth Avenue for shopping excursions or meals and shuttle celebrities like Tony Bennett, Pierce Brosnan, Regis Philbin and Rush Limbaugh or visiting socialites and dignitaries to formal events held at Mar-a-Lago’s magnificent ballroom. He would remain on call for whatever transportation needs might arise at whatever hour, day or night while he was on duty. As such, Ward got a look few have had of the man now dominating the airwaves with his unprecedented and unlikely campaign to become the Republican Party’s next presidential nominee. So back to that question: what’s he really like? “Exactly like what you see on TV,” said Ward in a recent interview over coffee and a light lunch at Bon Jour cafe in the village. “What you see is what you get. It’s no act. That’s
exactly how he is...blunt. He always speaks his mind.” Ward remembers pulling through the gates at Mar-a-Lago one afternoon after picking Trump up at the airport when something caught the eye of “The Boss.” “We’re in the driveway when he calls out to a couple of landscapers working on the grounds. He yells something like, ‘Hey fellas, see that tree over there? It needs to go. Get it out of here!” “And this was no small tree.. But that’s the way he is. His mind is always working.” By the way, the tree was gone in short order. Ward says Trump could be demanding, but his employees respected him and worked hard to keep “The Boss” happy. Listening to Ward describe his time working for Trump, it’s clear he shares that respect as well. In fact, his time with Trump helped him refocus his energy on one day starting a business of his own, one that involved doing something professionally that he truly enjoys. It wasn’t long after leaving Trump that he set his sights on starting his own business. That goal was realized when the Riverview High graduate returned to his hometown of Sarasota and eventually started his assorted limousine ventures in 2011. “I’d been successful in the insurance sales industry before working for Trump. I was good at it, but you always had to do more... it just wasn’t what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing,” he said. “Just too much stress.” He now enjoys the variety of people he meets and the excitement of the events he gets to be a part of through his limo work. It’s a job that requires a high level of commitment and energy, which is something else Ward shares with his former employer. You’ve likely heard Trump jab at fellow candidate Jeb Bush in recent weeks, calling him a ‘low-energy guy.’
It’s actually a clever and effective way of highlighting his own ‘highenergy’ persona...a quality that many pundits point to as best explaining Trump’s current high standing in the polls. And Trump prefers surrounding himself with high-energy individuals as well. Ward clearly fits the bill. A little bit of ego helps too. Ward unabashedly calls himself one of the best chauffeurs in the world. But as with Trump, his boast somehow doesn’t make him come off as a self-absorbed boor. There’s a boyish sincerity to his claim that serves to soften the message. “It’s all about customer service,” he says, “about going that extra mile. If I’m driving a client to see Ringo Starr perform, I’m not going to just drop him off out front. I’m going to try and get him backstage. I’m going to try and introduce him to Ringo.” And he succeeds. Routinely, he says, offering up a picture on his iPhone of his client posing with the famous Beatle. It’s not bragging...just ‘fact.’ And every new client gets the red carpet treatment…literally. Ward keeps one rolled up in his trunk, rolling it out for his new customers. “I want them to feel special, he says.” Which is also reminiscent of Trump. For all the stories about his bombast and lack of humility, many miss the clear respect and appreciation he shows for his supporters. He ends each appearance with a heartfelt message of appreciation for all those who come to his events. And his audiences return that appreciation and sincerity. Whatever you may think of his politics, the connection is real. Just ask the 1750 local residents who came to hear him speak at the Van Wezel this past May before he had even formally announced his bid for the Republican Party nomination. Energy. Sincerity. Hard work... they’re lessons Eddie Ward has taken to heart. The Boss would be proud.

Capital improvements funded in FY 2016 Before wrapping up its approval of the fiscal year 2016 budget, the County Commission held six budget workshops this year. “It has been very comprehensive,” said Commissioner Alan Maio, who as District 4 Commissioner represents the Key. The board began discussing the budget back in December at a retreat with County Administrator Tom Harmer. “To the average person, that might be very technical and dry,” Maio said of the budget meetings. “But at $1.09 billion, it is a lot of money.” Th e C o u n t y C ommi ssi on adopted the county budget in September voting to keep the millage rate the same as the previous year at 3.3912. However, many property owners will see higher tax bills because of increased property values countywide. Included in the budget were several items impacting Siesta Key, from funding for the South Siesta Beach Renourishment to needed wastewater upgrades.
In an interview with Siesta Sand, Maio discussed some of the projects funded in the 2016 budget. Maio also spoke Oct. 1 at the Siesta Key Association monthly meeting about the fiscal year 2016 budget.
Siesta Public Beach Improvements
This spring, all of the public parking was open along with the new playground at the improved Siesta Public Beach area, as well as a new pavilion and east concession stand. A total of 143 new parking spaces were added just in time for spring break. All four phases of the large improvement project at the Siesta Public Beach are expected to be completed soon. “It has all been funded, and it should be finished by the end of this year,” Maio said. Maio pointed out the additional parking spaces and the re-orientating of the parking so beachgoers can walk more safely to the beach. The majority of the
parking were reorganized to make it easier for beachgoers to walk through the lot. Instead of walking through the rows (between parked cars) beachgoers will be able to walk down the rows.
Siesta Key Lift Station and Force Main Pipe
This project is a multi-year, multi-million dollar project with the overall goal of removing the Siesta Key Wastewater Treatment Plant and replacing the aging facility with a new lift station and force main sewer pipe. “Water and wastewater project are important,” Maio said, “especially in an area surrounded by water.” The project is funded for a total of $11 million, starting with $3.67 million in fiscal year 2017. It will take four phases of construction work to decommission the aging plant, which is a remnant of a previous type of wastewater treatment. It is the only wastewater facility currently in the county that treats
By Roger Drouin water and discharges it into a waterway. The county plans to decommission the old wastewater plant by December, 31, 2016. That plan has to come to fruition in order to meet an agreement with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), which is mandating shutting the facility down.
Water meter replacement
Another utility system Capital Improvement Project, the Siesta Key large water meter replacement program was funded for $900,000 in fiscal year 2016 and fiscal year 2017. According to Sarasota County, due to normal wear and tear, meters generally slow down and therefore do not measure all the water used. Older meters or meters that have registered over one million gallons regardless of age are replaced during an annual water meter replacement program.
South Siesta Renourishment
The $19.9-million beach renourishment on South Siesta — which includes Turtle Beach Park — is included in the county’s five-year Capital Improvements Program. Funding for the $19.9-million project will come from Tourist Development Tax dollars, state beach funds or commercial financing, along with MSBU (property assessed annual fees paid by property owners near the renourishment). In June, the South Siesta project got a needed financial boost when the legislature approved a $2.75 million state award for the project. The county, which originally requested $7 million in state funding, is still seeking additional state funding to defray costs. “Staff is working on trying to get more [state] funding,” Maio said. The county plans to have the final permit in time for an earlyJanuary start date for the longplanned project to buffer two miles of beach, including Turtle Beach.

Morton’s Siesta Market starts renovations
Siesta Sand confirmed that Morton’s Siesta Market will begin their major renovation soon depending on permits with no plans to close for the duration of the project. “We will be doing a complete renovation to the store,” Todd Morton stated in a recent telephone interview. “The store will stay open the entire time during the renovations. At first we were going to close the store for the renovations but the contractor believes they can do the work while the store is open. Sections of the store will close or the work will be done at night”, Morton explained. Village Maintenance Report According to Michael Shay, Siesta Key Village Maintenance District (SKVMD) representative, the first year with Buccaneer as the Village maintenance vendor came with some growing pains and issues. “While we were limited in this past year to how much extra we could spend, i.e., replacing garbage pails, benches, and other capital improvements, we hope to have additional revenues in 2015-16 for some of these needed expenditures,” said Shay. “When our previous maintenance vendor’s contract expired, Buccaneer was awarded the contract at a higher bid price and the fiscal year assessments for 2014-15 were already in place and could not be adjusted. The assessments collected for 2014-15 were not enough to cover the added cost of the Buccaneer contract and additional maintenance items so the Siesta Key Village Maintenance District’s reserves were used,” he continued. Assessments for 2015-16 are expected to increase for the SKVMD, allowing for those needed expenditures. Already scheduled is the replacement of the garbage receptacles throughout the Village. This project will be completed over the next few years. The container located by Siesta Beach Resorts was hit by a car this past year so is at the top of the list for a change out, as is another container located in front of Siesta Key Oyster Bar (SKOB).
In early summer, Morton’s Market acquired the Siesta Village Market after the previous owners announced their intention to retire. Morton’s retained the majority of the employees and re-opened the store quickly after the acquisition and some cosmetic updates. “The work starts in the rear so we will be able to bring in the new
equipment the contractor will need for the major renovations”, Morton said. Once the renovation to the rear of the store is complete they will begin work on the store’s façade. The interior of the Siesta Key location will receive new fixtures, freezers, coolers, shelving units, along with a new ceiling and floor.

An improved and renamed park
The transition from “Bay Island Park” to “Nora Patterson Bay Island Park” is now complete. At a dedication ceremony Sept. 18, the just-recently improved park was renamed in honor of former Sarasota County Commissioner Nora Patterson. The dedication celebrated the renaming of the park, along with the completion of improvements at the park, which included the construction of a new

sea wall and installation of new benches, fishing rails, signage and other improvements. “We’re honored to rename this beautiful facility after Nora Patterson, a retired beloved commissioner and excellent steward of public lands,” said Carolyn Brown, director of Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources. “We’re also happy to unveil this newly improved park to the community, who are certain to enjoy this little
piece of waterfront paradise.”Nora Patterson Bay Island Park is regularly used for recreational fishing, as a temporary landing spot for recreational boaters and an ideal place to take in great views of beautiful Sarasota Bay. Nora Patterson served as a Sarasota County Commissioner for 16 years as the commissioner for District 4. Long an advocate for public water access, Patterson said she was honored to have the park named after her. The current Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to rename the park after her in May.
New Boss on the Key
A familiar face has returned to the Key but in a new role. On September 18, a decision was made to fill the Sheriff’s Siesta Substation Sergeant position. Sergeant Jason Mruczek is the new Siesta Substation sergeant. He had worked at the substation up until his promotion a few years ago. Sgt. Mruczek fills the position vacated by Sgt. Osborne when he accepted
a new position over 6 months ago.

Big Real Estate Sale
On September 15, a home sold in the Sanderling Club on the southern part of the Key for $6.25 million. At the time of press
this single family home sale was the third largest sale in Sarasota this year. The 5,000-square-foot estate on two acres is located right between the Gulf of Mexico and the Heron Lagoon.
Final Numbers for the 2015 Bird Nesting Season
Snowy Plovers: There were 23 nests on Siesta Key, and there were 9 nesting pairs. Two of the nests hatched. One nest hatched 3 chicks and fledged 2, while the other nest hatched 1 chick (potentially 3) but didn’t fledge any. There was 1 nest on Lido Key. The nest hatched 2 of 3 eggs. None of these chicks fledged. Least Terns: There was one colony of LETE located on Siesta Key. There were 45 nests, with about 100 adults but only 45 nesting pairs. Unfortunately, Fish Crows may have played a large part in the failure of this colony, but there were very few clues. The terns did not come back to repeat. Continued on the next page

Beach cleanup results
The 2015 International Coastal Cleanup took place on Saturday, September 19, with approximately 40 locations in Sarasota County being cleaned by volunteers. As in the past, Siesta Key Association (SKA) partnered with Keep Sarasota County Beautiful and helped pick up trash on Siesta Key Beach from Point o’ Rocks to Beach Access 2, including the Beach Accesses parking lots. Beach access #1 was also cleaned along with the adjoining parking lot. The 29 volunteers collected 18 (15 lb.) bags of garbage and 2 (20 lb.) bags of recyclables. According to Michael Shay, president of SKA and Coastal Cleanup organizer for SKA, “The beach was actually cleaner than in past times. However, the beach access parking lots were a bit dirty.”
Talking about Trash on the beach
Siesta Key Association (SKA) members and visitors continuously complain about the amount of trash left behind by beach goers. There is a constant request for more trash cans to be placed at and on the beach. Michael Shay, President of
the SKA reached out to Sarasota County Parks and Recreation Director, Carolyn Brown, in an email regarding the complaints. According to Brown, there are several good reasons why the trash cans are placed far from the open beach areas and water, and placed near beach access points. In Brown’s emailed response to Shay, she stated, “I have reviewed your email regarding trash on our beaches and asked staff to provide some information. Here are several bullet points that reflect the county’s efforts to manage litter and trash on the public beach in a safe and efficient manner: • The multitude of cans on the open beach is an eyesore, in spite of the number of cans they were often overflowing and thus even more of an eyesore. • Trash cans and their associated litter provide food for opportunistic wildlife, throwing wildlife populations out of balance that can impact protected wildlife. • The county’s deployment of trash cans is limited to countyowned or managed lands and is therefore limited to the public beach and beach access points. • The need to empty trash cans on a regular basis required utility vehicles on the beach at times when the beach was filled with beachgoers which could be a safety issue. • State wildlife agencies and local Audubon representatives were asking us to minimize use of utility vehicles on the beach due to the impact on beach nesting birds. Trash cans on the beach also are contraindicated by the Sea Turtle Protection Ordinance, necessitating their removal from the open beach during the nesting season. • Each summer, tropical storm events required staff to haul the cans off the beach multiple times per season to avoid loss. The county continues to use a beach rake to clean and groom Siesta Beach. The wrack line is left alone to provide foraging for wildlife. Staff will continue to monitor and evaluate trash and recycling management at all of the beaches and parks and are prepared to make changes as necessary.”

Got sand?
By Brian Wigelsworth
|Sand Sculpting: Too Ephemeral?
Ephemeral - [ih-fem-er-uh l]; adjective; 1. lasting a very short time, temporary. Sand sculpting is definitely an ephemeral art form, and most of us professional sand sculptors love that aspect about it. You have a certain amount of time to create it and view it, then it’s gone. Yes the sculptures are ephemeral, but the events should not be. Without events like the Siesta Key Crystal Classic we wouldn’t get a chance to create these large, beautiful works of art in the first place. In my last month’s article I let you in on an exciting element of the Siesta Key Crystal Classic International Sand Sculpting Festival coming up in November. We were going to build a 15 foot high sand sculpture of a drive-in movie screen complete with vintage sign, stockade fence, palm trees and cars brandishing the logos of the sponsors of the event. Then, we had arranged for the spectacular Sarasota Film Festival to come out on Saturday night and show a movie against our sand screen for a night of family fun. It was a wonderful idea that had never been done before! Unfortunately the event’s major sponsor from last year, our first national corporate sponsor, is not returning. And other sponsors have been difficult to acquire. Due to the lack of funds we have had to cancel the entire movie idea. The Crystal Classic is a very large and expensive endeavor. These are the best artists in the world working in sand today. This year we have sculptors coming from Russia, Italy, Holland, Ireland and the Czech Republic, just to name a few. We pay the artists to attend. We transport, house and feed them. We rent the beach, and have to pay the county for the equipment and manpower needed to create the sand garden and vendor village, trash removal, police and EMT support. And these just scratch
The Crystal Classic scheduled to take place November 13-17 is seeking donations and sponsors.
the surface of what it takes to put on an international event of this caliber. But we, the organizing committee, try to do what we can to make this event better each and every year. Try to bring something special each time, like last year’s Margaritaville resort-wear fashion show we put on top of a 65 foot long sand sculpture….that was fantastic! And it had never been done before! This year’s show will still be loaded with beautiful sand art, good food, drink and music, and fun for all ages! But, we really could use more help. We are still behind the
gun. We need commercial or private sponsors to step up and help us keep this event going and growing. Do you want some extra and unusual public exposure for your company? Do you know someone else who does? Or do you simply have the resources to help this wonderful community art event survive and thrive? If so, please contact the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce at 941-349-3800 and tell them you want to help the Siesta Key Crystal Classic. And who knows, if we get enough support, we may get that night at the drive-in after all!!

Siesta’s Silver City celebrates its 10th anniversary By Debbie Flessner “Good morning, welcome to the Silver City!” The friendly greeting floats across the small south Siesta shop, where the employees treat customers like family. For 10 years, Monica Galfre and her husband George Rysko have owned the jewelry store, which carries a wide variety of handmade sterling silver and gold pieces. Both of them had worked in various types of retail for about 28 years when they first moved to the Suncoast 14 years ago and began trying to decide what sort of shop might be successful in this location. “We wanted a ‘beachy’ store, and I have always liked silver,” Galfre said. “We actually opened the day of Hurricane Wilma, on October 13, and we had a good day because people were tired of sitting in their condos and waiting for the storm to pass.” Since that day, the couple’s little Siesta shop has become the go-to place for unique, handmade jewelry, and they have even designed and created their own proprietary gemstone. The Siesta Key Watercolor Gemstone has a lovely green/blue hue and can be placed in a variety of settings in sterling silver or gold. Debra Lewis, marketing director at Silver City, says that the stone reflects the colors and feel of our island paradise. “Our sand out here is almost 100 percent quartz, and that’s what we use to make the stone,” she said. “Then we slice it in half and infuse the color.” When Siesta Key sand is taken off the beach for commercial use, it must be legally acquired, which is what Lewis says Silver City is careful to do correctly. They also use Siesta sand in their “Dune” line, in which the sugar white sand is clearly visible. Exclusive pieces like these are not only beautiful jewelry, they can also be keepsakes to be passed down for generations, or held close as a fond memory from a special vacation. In this, their 10th year of doing business on Siesta Key, it is only fitting that Silver City will be displaying and selling some of their unique sand-based pieces at November’s Siesta Key Crystal Classic International Sand Sculpting

Festival from November 13 to 17. The popular event typically draws more than 35,000 visitors over the five-day period the sculptures are created and displayed. But Galfre says it’s more than just travelers to the Key, it is her local clientele who have enabled her to stay in business here for so long, through the ups and downs of the Florida economy. She said she loves having her shop on south Siesta. “Our customer is a happy customer, and they like the fact that it is a family business,” she said. “People are drawn to us because they know that we are honest.” Those loyal customers can expect to receive an invitation from the shop to come in and join a 10th anniversary celebration in the next couple of months. And anyone who walks into the store and “checks in” on Facebook or tags themselves in the store, can receive 10 percent off their purchase. Silver City is located at 6539

Financial Focus
|Avoid Emotional Investment Decisions What’s the biggest obstacle to your ability to invest successfully? Is it the ups and downs of the financial markets? Political events? The fact that you weren’t born rich? Actually, the chief hurdle you face is something over which you have control: your own emotions. Your emotions can lead to a variety of ill-advised investment behaviors, such as these: • Cutting losses – Declines in the financial markets can lead some investors to try to “cut their losses” by selling investments whose price has declined. Yet, when prices have dropped, it may actually be a good time to buy investments, not sell them, especially when the investments are still fundamentally sound. • Chasing performance – In the investment world, the flip side of “fear” is “greed.” Just as some investors are propelled by fear of loss, others are motivated by quick, big gains. They may pursue “hot” investments, only to be disappointed when the sizzle quickly fizzles. Instead of trying to “score” that one big winner, you may be better off spreading your investment dollars among a range of vehicles – stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and so on. While diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it may help reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. • Focusing on the short term – When the market is down, you might get somewhat upset when you view your monthly investment statements. But any individual statement is just a snapshot in time; if you were to chart your investment results over a period of 10, 15 or 20 years, you’d see the true picture of how your portfolio is doing – and, in all likelihood, that picture would look better than a statement or two you received during a down market. In any case, don’t overreact to shortterm downturns by making hasty “buy” or “sell” decisions. Instead, stick with a long-term strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. • Heading to the investment “sidelines” – Some people get so frustrated over market volatility that they throw up their hands and head to the investment “sidelines” until “things calm down.” And it’s certainly true that, when owning stocks, there are no guarantees; you do risk losing some, or all, of
your investment. But if you jump in and out of the market to “escape“ volatility, you may take on an even bigger risk – the risk of losing some of the growth you’ll need to reach your goals. Consider this: If you had invested $10,000 in a package of stocks mimicking the S&P 500 in December 1979, your investment would have grown to more than $426,000 by December 2013. But if you had missed just the 10 best days of the market during that time, your $10,000 would only have grown to less than $206,000 – a difference of about $220,000, according to Ned Davis Research, a leading investment research organization. The bottom line? Staying invested over the long term can pay off. (Keep in mind, though, that the S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and isn’t meant to depict an actual investment. Also, as you’ve no doubt heard, past performance is not a guarantee of future results.) Our emotions are useful in guiding us through many aspects of our lives, but when you invest, you’re better off using your head – and not your heart.

Audra Beckmann of Russell Springs, KY and Samuel (Sam) Skaggs of Liberty, KY exchanged vows surrounded by family and close friends, at an intimate wedding ceremony held on the magnificent Siesta Key shoreline in front of Tropical Beach Resorts. Audra, a Registered Nurse at Russell County Hospital and Sam, a welder for Caldwell Tanking (builds water towers), met when Audra was in nursing school in Somerset Kentucky, where Sam was living at the time. One of her nursing school classmates introduced them. Their first date was rather unique. They went out on Lake Cumberland on Audra’s boat. “He thought it was the coolest thing for a girl to own her own boat. He asked me out on another date, but I wasn’t interested. He was too quiet for me,” she said. “So for about 3-4 months he “chased” after me.” Audra finally caved in and they went on their second date on New Year’s. “He was much more energetic and confident.” They shared a New Years kiss and the rest, as they say, is history. A mid-December carriage ride outside the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN set the stage for a memory that will forever be etched in Audra’s heart. “Sam rented a horse carriage ride and was a nervous wreck. He had the ring in his hand and I tried holding his hand and he told me to “get off his hand”. He asked the driver how long it would last. I couldn’t help but wonder what his deal was, he acted miserable. Right about that time he got down on his knee in the carriage and proposed.” As they were deciding where to get married, they knew they wanted to get married on a beach somewhere they had never been. They decided on Siesta Key after watching the travel Channel. The segment featured the beach on Siesta Key and mentioned it had been named the number one beach in the United States. The day after the wedding this amazing couple began their exciting honeymoon. They embarked on a Carnival Cruise which would take them to Aruba, Dominican Republic, Grand Turk, and Curaçao. Audra and Sam’s wedding coordinator was Sand Petal Weddings. 941-923-6060 sandpetalweddings@ gmail.com.

News Up & Down the Trail By Roger Drouin and Debbie Flessner Developer pitches major project
Up to 130 residential units and a large commercial center could soon rise up on 18-plus acres of vacant South Sarasota land at 7914 Tamiami Trail and just south of Holiday Drive. According to paperwork filed with the Sarasota County Development Review Committee, BMR Funding LLC, represented by lawyer Brenda Patten, proposes to construct the “Cassia Cay” residential and commercial developments on the two South Sarasota parcels. The developer is requesting some ordinance changes to amend the binding development concept plan submitted to and approved by the county by a previous developer. One of the changes the current developer is requesting is a height increase for two of the buildings in the commercial center. The two parcels total just over 18 acres. Property to the south is owned by Sarasota County.

Florida’s first diverging diamond interchange is coming to Sarasota. FDOT officials believe the unique design will ease congestion, move high volumes of traffic, and reduce crashes at the increasingly busy interchange of I-75 and University Parkway. Commencement of construction was marked at a Sept. 2 ground breaking attended by Gov. Rick Scott and local elected officials, although actual construction work began a month earlier. The $74.5 million project is expected to take two years to complete. Officials hope to have the work completed before the September 2017 World Rowing Championships, which is expected to draw thousands of visitors to nearby Nathan Benderson Park. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, Manatee County Commissioner Vanessa Baugh, Manatee County Commission Chair Betsy Benac and Sarasota County Commission Chairwoman Carolyn Mason attended the Sept. 3 ground breaking. The Diverging Diamond Interchange eliminates a left turn movement onto an interstate entrance ramp. Drivers will travel on University Parkway through a cross over onto the left side of the
road. They can then turn left onto the ramp without stopping. If they are not getting on the interstate, they will continue straight and cross back over to the right hand side of the road.
$5 million home sale
A walled and gated three quarter acre estate in Harbor Acres topped real estate transactions in early September, selling for $5 million. The waterfront home features deep-water harborage and jet ski lift and bayside terraces. The interior stands out with extensive millwork, three-stop elevator, formal dining, wet bar, and a two-story wood paneled library. Built in 1992, it has four bedrooms, three and a half baths and 4,852 square feet of living area. It previously sold for $2.7 million in 2013.
Carson plans book stop
Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson will be heading to SRQ next month. But the retired pediatric neurosurgeon, who has written eight books, is heading to town for a somewhat unusual visit for a candidate in the midst of campaign battle. Carson is slated to appear at Bookstore1Sarasota for a stop on his book tour on Nov. 4. Those who want to attend must purchase Carson’s book from the store. Sarasota GOP officials had plans to ask Carson to also conduct a free public event in conjunction with his visit.
Twin Lakes fire station opens
Sarasota County’s Fire Station No. 16 (Twin Lakes) opened Sept. 15. The single-story 13,000-squarefoot station features three truck bays and currently houses a fire engine, an advance life support ambulance and a full-time staff. The response area handles roughly 1,200 calls a year. With the continual growth occurring east of Interstate 75, calls are expected to increase, and this station has the capacity to support that need. The new station is designed to withstand wind loads of 150-plus miles per hour. It is also a “green” facility that is poised to achieve a minimum level of “Certified” with the U.S. Green Building
Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. According to the county’s design plans, Fire Station 16 is currently located at 5875 Hummingbird Avenue. Fire Station 16 will utilize the same floor plan as Fire Station 10 (Fruitville and Vic Edwards) with exterior modifications to complement the neighborhood.
New Ringling Museum restaurant
The Ringling Museum has welcomed a new restaurant at the former site of Treviso. In June, The Ringling’s contract expired with the owner of its catering company and on-site restaurant, Treviso. As the institution set out to find a replacement for the space within the visitor’s pavilion, nine local restaurateurs applied for the opening. Late this summer, the TableSeide Restaurant Group was chosen from among the applicants. The company operates Libby’s Café + Bar, in Southside Village, along with Louie’s Modern and The Francis downtown. The name of the new restaurant at The Ringling: Muse. According to the museum’s website, “Muse at The Ringling provides a comfortable yet contemporary dining experience in a magnificent setting. Muse treats food as art with a menu that features innovative items that are both visually appealing and flavorful.
Not a bad place to live…
Sarasota has made another list. It was one of only three Florida cities to make the “100 Most Livable Cities in America” 2016 list produced by Livability.com. Livability.com’s ranking of the Best Places to Live includes cities and towns with populations between 20,000 to 350,000. The other Florida entries on the list were Boca Raton, at No. 59, and Miami Beach, at No. 79. Livability.com says: “Overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, just south of Tampa Bay, Sarasota includes a string of eight islands that draw thousands of tourists. It’s an appealing destination for tourists, which is why it landed on our list of the Best Spring Break Cities for Families. Continued on page 15

Sheriff’s Report
October 2015
Aug. 20 - Sept. 21, 2015
8/21/15 Burglary Residential – Occupied 600 Block Calle De Peru A 25-year-old male was arrested for burglary. The defendant pulled open the screen on the victim’s lanai, breaking the frame off the porch. He then climbed into the open area of the lanai, knocking some plants down in the process. The homeowner heard the commotion and confronted the defendant as he was entering the porch area. The homeowner then punched the defendant in the face, at which time the defendant said, “Have love man, have love”. The barefoot defendant left the area quickly. The victim described the defendant as a thin male in his twenties with dreadlocks. He added that the defendant sounded like he was possibly Hispanic from the way he was talking. A deputy located the defendant, who matched the description nearly exactly as described. The defendant was a white male with dreadlocks who possibly believed he was of a different race, based on his speech and manner of talking, similar to someone from Jamaica. The defendant initially refused to give his name, but eventually revealed his name and birthdate while bragging about his prior arrest record. His criminal history showed numerous out of state arrests for burglary, drugs and possession of stolen property. 8/24/15 Petit Theft 5000 Block Ocean Blvd The manager of a Village convenience store reported a petit theft. A group of five subjects entered the store. One of the subjects, a white female, approximately 18
years old, grabbed an eighteen pack of Natural Light beer valued at $24.96 and went into the bathroom. The suspect emerged from the bathroom and left the store. The eighteen pack of beer was found empty in the garbage. The manager says the suspect emerged from the bathroom and left the store. 8/27/15 Petit Theft - Public Beach A wallet containing $20 and an ID card were reported as stolen. A man stated he left the items unattended for an unspecified amount of time, two weeks prior, at the Public Beach. There are no known suspects. 9/7/15 Burglary – Vehicle 8000 Block Midnight Pass Rd A man reported that his car was burglarized. Sometime during the night, an unknown person entered his Toyota 4 Runner. The car was unlocked and parked in his driveway. The suspect removed the $450 in cash and $50 in coins from the center console, which were inside a plastic zip lock bag. The suspect also took a set of keys from the bag and removed an American Express card from the victim’s wallet. The wallet was left behind, as was another baggie of cash in the glove box. The victim has no possible suspects he could name. He also stated that he heard no noises during the night and his dog had not barked. 9/8/15 Burglary – Vehicle 1000 Block Sea Plume Way An officer responded to a report of a vehicle burglary. The victim stated that she had gone into her vehicle to retrieve her firearm when she discovered it missing from the locked glove box. She had last seen the weapon approximately 2 weeks prior when she placed it into the glove box and locked it. Upon further inspection, she realized the extra magazine also missing from the center dash console. The woman
stated she had not seen anything unusual around her car over the course of the last two weeks. The key to the glove box is the same as the ignition key. The woman stated she always has the key with her or in the vehicle if she was home and would be returning shortly to the vehicle. Touch DNA swabs were able to be taken and were placed into evidence in reference to the firearm serial number. 9/13/15 Theft - Public Beach A homeless woman reported that she was sitting on the second story of the pavilion with three bags containing all of her belongings. She decided to go downstairs to the ground level, leaving her pink purse behind. She was downstairs for about eight minutes when an unknown red headed female approached her and stated that her bag had been taken and put in the office of the pavilion. The victim did not ask her any questions and went back upstairs to find her bag gone. The victim told an officer she did not believe her bag was stolen but that she needed access to the locked pavilion to get her bag. An employee was contacted but found no bag anywhere inside the pavilion. The victim stated that the purse contained several special stones the size of the officer’s fist. She could not give a value because she believed they were priceless. When the officer requested more detail in order to fill out a report, the victim stated she would only tell the President of The United States or the FBI because of the gravity of the situation involving the stones. The officer noted that the victim continuously stated that she felt bad for whoever took the purse and that she would do what she had to do. She was vague during further questioning and became agitated when asked why she would leave a bag with such value unattended. She later complained to another officer that the investigating officer asked too many questions. 9/13/15 Stolen Tag 300 Block Avenida De Mayo A woman reported her license plate was stolen from her 2008 Toyota sometime between 1:00a.m. and 2:15a.m., while her vehicle was parked at the Municipal parking lot in the Village. No suspects.

Last year doTERRA was brought to me by Melody Watts, my upline for a health condition I was having that transformed my life. She also encouraged me to attend the annual doTERRA convention and learn about all the research and success stories with the oils changing lives all over the world. At the convention I realized there was something more for me than just adjusting patients, as powerful as chiropractic is, it was time to take natural healthcare alternatives to the world. I sat in the back of the convention hall and looked at the floor seats where all the Diamonds leaders sat and thought it is time for me to go out and share the oils and tell my story. I needed to tell whole communities about the oils and the doTERRA opportunity. I made a decision and I went for it. I know the biggest risk is not taking a chance at all. I have never wanted to look back and wonder what I could have done if I had tried. I decided to go for it and be comfortable with getting uncomfortable. We packed up our dogs, coolers for healthy food, and clothes in our Jeep
and went out on the road for four months living at rest areas and hotels sharing doTERRA Essential Oils and building a Team in 20 states and 2 countries. If you would like to try the Emotional Aromatherapy Kit this month, email me at drjennkauffman@gmail. com or call/text 941-2108878. You can also go to our website www.mydoterra.com/ essentialrootsforwellness and order as a wellness advocate or check out the products. We do have Oil Parties at our home on Siesta Key most Friday nights with drinks and appetizers, if you would like an invitation to attend send me an email. We have many people that use the oils for their health as consumers. However there are a few select entrepreneurs who are interested in the opportunity as a business. We are seeking like-minded leaders with big vision who would like to create a Team with doTERRA either in the United States or startup in another country. If you are interested in a business opportunity send me an email drjennkauffman@gmail. com. (Advertorial) Dr. Jenn Kauffman has personally mentored thousands of women and men over the last 10 years as a chiropractor. She has owned three separate and very distinct successful chiropractic clinics. She’s been coaching her patients on how to transform their lives and feels it is her life mission to grow women of the world to have a truly passionate life and live the life of their dreams, whatever that may be for the individual.

City earns procurement honor
The City of Sarasota’s Purchasing Division was awarded the 2015 Annual Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award from the National Procurement Institute recently. This achievement recognizes national best practices in the field of procurement. The city is one of just 26 recipients in Florida and 206 in the United States to be honored with this accolade known to purchasing professionals as the “pinnacle of procurement.” According to city officials, on average, every year the City’s Purchasing Division facilitates 90 formal solicitations (bids, requests for proposal, invitations to negotiation) and 3,500 purchase orders for everything from construction services to office supplies to professional services. Over 3,000 purchase card transactions also are processed. All this is accomplished by just seven employees. “This award shines a light on the dedication and professional knowledge within the Purchasing Division,” said City Manager Tom Barwin.
Prescribed burn team reduces fire risks
Sarasota County’s prescribed burn team has burned more than 7,000 acres on county lands this fiscal year in an effort to help prevent the spread of wildfires and protect property, people and the environment. Since October 2014, Sarasota County Fire Department mitigation specialists have conducted 53 prescribed burns and have already surpassed their annual goal of 6,000 acres. These burns, conducted by highly skilled staff members with specialized training, mimic natural fire conditions and help prevent catastrophic wildfires by reducing hazardous conditions. Fire is also essential for maintaining the biodiversity throughout many of Florida’s habitats, according to Jon Robinson, division manager of natural area parks and preserves. The county’s team is one of more
than 30 different entities authorized by the Florida Division of Forestry to conduct burns within Sarasota County.
New hotel planned for Nokomis
In January, construction is scheduled to begin on a 100-room Hilton Homes2 Suites on a plot of land that has been vacant for the past 12 years. A corner of West Albee Farm road and U.S. 41 in Nokomis will be the site of the new property, which is expected to be open for business in late November or early December of 2016. It will be a four-story hotel, featuring a swimming pool and a hot buffet breakfast, with each of the suites containing a full-size refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and table that pulls out from the wall. The project is a joint venture between Sarasota-based Floridays Development Company and LODGECO Hospitality, which is headquartered in Michigan and will manage the property. Floridays has also constructed a Homes2 Suites on International Drive South in Orlando, which is scheduled to open on December 15 of this year.
Venice City Council installs a capital budget
In spite of managing to make significant improvements in the city of Venice over the years, the Venice City Council did so without the means of an official capital budget. On September 23, the Council gave their final approval to adopt a new Capital Budget plan. All projects were previously accomplished with the use of a Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) fund or with the budgets of various city departments. The general fund for improvements within the new Capital Budget will be comprised of both local funding sources and other projects funded by taxes and fees. Council members believe that a separate capital budget will make expenditures easier to classify and understand. For the fiscal year 2016, the city plans to spend $13 million on airport improvements, $13 million on utilities projects and $4 million on 1 Cent Sales Tax projects. Last year’s 1 Cent Sales Tax project helped pay for the new Performing Arts Center at Venice High School, but now that the Center has been completed, a new city project will be eligible to receive the estimated $4.1 million funds.

Local ham radio operators bounce signal off the moon
From a garage in south Venice, four amateur radio operators accomplished something that is usually done by multi-billion dollar electronics companies--they bounced a low-powered radio signal off the moon and to another amateur operator on the other side of the world. Joel Kreiss, Frank Rubman, Martin Himmelfarb and Jack Rapaport used a 100-watt transmitter to send their signal more than a half a million miles to Broni, Italy. It was imperative that the person on the receiving end of the signal be able to see the moon at the same time as the Venice group, so their contact in Broni was the perfect choice. Using their signal, the men exchanged pictures of their antenna set-ups with the Broni radio operator. They said that while their antenna looked crude, like it was made of coat hangers and a broomstick, their Italian counterpart’s equipment appeared much more high tech. For their next project, the Venice group plans to try to connect with an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.

Changing insurance carriers a win for City of Venice
Two years ago, the City of Venice decided to sign a three-year contract with Ascension Benefits & Insurance Solutions of Florida for its property and liability insurance business. That move has resulted in both a hundred thousand dollar savings in premiums the first year alone, and the presentation of a more than fifty thousand dollar refund check to the city last month. Also impressive has been the response time of the insurance carrier when their services have been required. In August, a lightning strike caused a fire in the restroom at Maxine Barrett Park, on the Island. Ascension was immediately on site to assess the damage and quickly delivered an air-conditioned restroom trailer, with electric and plumbing hookups. Their coverage will also include construction of a brand new restroom to replace the damaged one. City administrative services director Alan Bullock told the City Council in September that in early 2016, he plans to present to them a proposed contract renewal to extend the insurance carrier’s service for another year.

Our area routinely makes the cut for many national lists. Top Beaches...Top Retirement Destinations...Most Livable Cities... Top Towns for Unattended Turn Signal Usage... and my personal tongue-in-cheek favorite, Top Places to Drive Your Vehicle into a Large Body of Water... But the latest – like the last two mentioned above – is yet another example of one we’d just as soon be left off of: Top Places for Scammers Looking for Easy Marks. According to a recent Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report, the Sarasota Manatee region ranks 17th nationally for fraud complaints. Area residents filed 3830 complaints, which works out to 523 per 100,000 residents. And the FTC went on to say that 37 percent of those filing complaints locally actually lost money, with an average ding of $2,104. Yikes! It’s enough to make you want to make an unscheduled left-hand turn out of the Van Wezel parking lot straight into Sarasota Bay (turn signal optional, of course).

City to Park Taxi Regulations as Uber Gets Green light
Meanwhile, in the city of Sarasota, observers were stunned to hear commissioners actually propose rolling back regulations for taxis and limousines instead of extending them to cover ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft. What’s next? The return of The Depot and with it the actual sound of live music downtown under the stars along the streets of Sarasota?

Candy Can Be A Holiday TRICK! Eating sweets causes damaging acids to form in the mouth. These acids continue to affect the teeth for at least 20 minutes before they are neutralized. Sugar-free gum is effective in combating the bacteria in plaque and fighting the acid that eats away at enamel. The chewing motion also stimulates the flow of saliva, which helps cleanse the teeth. Another option is to allow candy that melts and disappears quickly. The longer teeth are exposed to sugar, the longer bacteria can feed on it, which could produce cavities. The best way to protect teeth from decay is to have candy in small portions at limited times, such as after a meal, as dessert or at regular snack times. Allowing your child to choose between these types of sweeets and limiting the amount they consume will help reduce future problems...

meeting (circumventing?) emissions standards? The company is said to have included source code in the computers of some of its models that senses when emission controls are being tested, fully activating them, only to shut them down again later when the software determines the test has been completed. Reading about the deception reminded me of the Fahrvergnugen ad campaign the company ran a while back. The tag line was “Fahrvergnugen: It’s What Makes Driving Fun.” You’ve got to hand it to those Germans...they seem to have a colorful word for everything. Perhaps their new slogan should be “Shadenfreude: Bringing you Pleasure Through our Misfortune.”
Charity an Easy Call When it’s on Someone Else’s Dime
In a recent column, Tom Lyons tells the story of a minor accident involving 86-year-old Ethel Mays and a Sarasota police officer driving a city owned patrol car. The accident turned out to be the officer’s fault, and no one was hurt, both good things for Mays. But unfortunately, the cost to repair her well-maintained model year 2000 Ford Taurus was greater than its book value. So holding onto the vehicle she had hoped would be her last meant Mays would have to dig into her own pocket to cover the cost of repairs over and above the amount of the settlement check the City’s insurance carrier was obligated to write. It’s not an uncommon problem with older vehicles. In fact my mother-inlaw recently dealt with the same issue when she was rear-ended by a distracted young driver paying more attention to her cell phone than to the rapidly closing distance between her vehicle and my mother-in-law’s. But Lyons surprised me when he mentioned that – although with some misgivings – he passed along a suggestion from a reader that the city pick up the difference, which amounted to almost $2,500. And guess what? City Manager Tom Barwin apparently agrees. So Mays may end up getting her vehicle repaired without suffering a financial hit to her limited financial resources...again,
a good thing for her. Still, though I risk coming off like a miserly curmudgeon, I can’t help myself from pointing out that charity is easy when it involves someone else’s money. And though $2,500 isn’t going to bust the city’s budget, the underlying attitude that allows for this ‘solution’ explains how a routine $11 million sewer lift station can end up costing $35 million (and counting) and how a new $7 million city parking garage jumps to $12.5 million. Shouldn’t there be a solution other than falling back on the currently popular axiom that it is a primary responsibility of government to assure good outcomes in all cases rather than adhering to the now quaint notion that citizen tax dollars be spent wisely and in a manner that supports the broad public interest, not the narrow ones of a few? When I first moved to Sarasota, Ken Thompson was still City Manager...a position he held for 37 years. Admittedly, it was a different time. Continued on page 21

Siesta Key Drum Circle Squid Kids
By Trebor Britt

Every Sunday is a perfect time to come to the Key to reconnect with Mother Nature and to enjoy some wonderful entertainment. I’m talking about the Siesta Key Drum Circle that takes place each Sunday starting about an hour before sunset and lasting until about 10 p.m. The gathering meets up just south of the main pavilion - just follow your ears and watch for the swelling crowd.
Please note the following rules of etiquette that need to be observed at the Drum Circle so that all can enjoy the experience: the inside of the drum circle is for participants only, not for people standing around. Feel free to enter the circle, take a picture and dance, but always keep moving. Never play someone’s drum without getting clearance from the owner. Always ask before borrowing other
people’s property, especially hula hoops. Flash photography and bright video lights are distracting, so photograph during daylight or use a night vision camera. And finally, please do not drink alcohol or smoke inside the circle and respect our beach by placing all trash in the appropriate receptacles. Photo by Jayson Cody.

Lido Beach Renourishment project Several comments stand out and we provide them ’rough draft’ by Atkins: re Ted Sperling Lido Park, “any beaches present on the downdrift side would suffer concomitant sand losses. The construction of groins would have to be supplemented with nourishment so that adjacent beaches would not be starved of sand.” This statement indicates that Ted Sperling Park would likely become sand-starved without regular nourishment.” Re Siesta Key beaches: “Corps work proposed is especially important to Siesta Key since it involves back-passing at an inlet ebb shoal rather than bypassing of sand to the downdrift side of the inlet. Most inlet ebb shoal mining projects are those in which material dredged
from the ebb shoal is placed on downdrift shorelines helping restore the flow of sand in the direction of natural net transport. As the present situation is one of back-passing material to an updrift shoreline, more risk exists due to interference with the natural net directional movement of sediment. In the present case, approximately 1.3 million cubic yards (MCY) of sand is being considered for placement on updrift beaches which is over 10 times the estimated net annual, southward transport of sediment.” For the FDEP, it’s likely the ACOE response, comments from public and from the Atkins report may result in several rounds of RAI from the FDEP. Comments contained in a

letter response to the FDEP re the ACOE application were submitted by Catherine and Bob Luckner, and on behalf of The Siesta Key Association are as follows: “Comments by CB& I (Coastal Engineering, Boca Raton) on behalf of the ACOE focused primarily on inconsistencies within the original design and provided “draft” details of possible monitoring plans for sea grass, water quality, dredged sand quality and potential artifacts in the dredged area during and after the construction. The ACOE also stated that US Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service have not yet completed their Biological Opinion and consultation letters and their Incidental Take Authorization for protected species such as sea turtles and migratory and beach nesting birds. Historically this is a complex set of documents that require significant additional protections to be included in the ACOE plan. It has also historically been on the critical path for permitting.

Within the ACOE response, an area of concern relates to questions raised regarding an alternative groin field and groin design. They state no consideration of this alternative technology was given in 1999 when the initial Federal approval was provided as it was not yet ‘proven’ technology. It was also arbitrarily not considered when the current design was optimized in 2002 and 2004 and also not considered in the Value Engineering Report of 2013. The pier-type Permeable Adjustable Groin (PAG) was approved by FDEP in February of 2009 for Longboat Key. The original application for PAG groins was in 2007. The first PAG was installed in 2010 and most recent in March of 2015. This provides” real time” outcomes and modeling data of sand accretion monitoring data by a Coastal Engineer. The PAG demonstrate beach protection both upstream and downstream, are attractive and considered an amenity versus the six foot high wall of “boulders” which will (according to the ACOE report) be exposed on the beach likely
within a year after placement.“ Our conclusion without the consideration of an alternative design: if such alternative would remedy concerns for erosion along the Ted Sperling Lido County Park, eliminate issues of sufficient sand volume for stabilization and accretion, reduce the initial volume of sand necessary, and increase intervals between renourishment, many environmental concerns could be eliminated. The need for dredging such a quantity of sand from Big Pass and the ebb shoal could be eliminated. “ For now, it appears unlikely a Permit for Dredging will be FDEP approved soon. If the application continues to generate valid questions, the ACOE will have opportunity to respond and hopefully, provide a ‘best practices’ and “do no harm” project. Satchel’s Last Resort Sanctuary gets some help from Siesta residents By Roger Drouin
Reva, a Sharpei mix, was picked up by Sarasota County Animal Services in June. She was a stray, about seven or eight months old, and very friendly. But she had two front broken legs —an old injury that hadn’t healed — and could barely walk. Satchel’s Last Resort, a Sarasota non-profit animal sanctuary, took Reva in about a week later. A person on Facebook sent a private message to the animal sanctuary. “They said they witnessed someone driving a tractor trailer throw her out of the window, approximately a month earlier,” said Iris Eastman, executive director of Satchel’s. Satchel’s led an effort to raise funds to get Reva an operation to mend one of her legs. At a discount, Dr. Colby Bruns, at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialist and Emergency Care Center, preformed the complicated surgery, re-breaking the bone and putting in a plate and screws. A group of volunteers is currently raising funding for another
Photos submitted by Maria Shay
surgery on the second broken leg. That surgery is expected to take place later this month (October). Maria and Michael Shay, Siesta residents, have been fostering Reva as she heals and undergoes medical treatment. “We are waiting to strengthen the one leg, and then have the second surgery done,” Maria Shay told Siesta Sand. The vet wants us to walk her for twenty minutes a day, but the most she can do is about 15 minutes and her body just gives out,” Shay said. “That is significantly better than from when we first got her.” Without the surgeries, Reva’s
legs would have gotten worse and impacted her back, Eastman said. When she was first taken in, she was in pain and couldn’t play with other dogs. Now, however, just one indication that Reva is doing better is she is able to jump on the couch — something she was unable to do before, Shay said. Maria first got involved with Satchel’s a few years ago. As a volunteer with the Humane Society of Sarasota County, Shay had worked with a dog that was getting kennel stress while at the humane society’s shelter. “We were afraid we wouldn’t be able to adopt the dog
out,” Shay said. Satchel’s took the dog in and began socializing her. “Their training is amazing,” Shay said of the last resort sanctuary. “I can’t say enough about them. They really go out for these dogs.” Satchel’s has taken care of dogs that are very shy, dogs used as baits in fighting rings, pit bulls, and dogs that had behavior issues — all pets that traditional shelters often don’t have the resources to work with or have difficulty finding good homes for. The sanctuary is located at 8101 Coash Road, east of I-75. Eastman, an animal behavior consultant, recalls Winter, a Sheppard-Labrador mix, a “nice dog, but unbelievable shy.” “When people came out [to Satchel’s] he didn’t engage with them. He would see a strange person and turn around and walk back in,” Eastman said. “He was really shy, the type of dog that the average shelter would not invest in, and this is what we specialize in. Another shelter might not have the time or resources.”
Satchel’s eventually matched Winter with a man who loved working with shy animals. “He met with Winter, for three or four months, everyday, to build a bond,” Eastman recalled, soon adopting Winter and taking her home. Founded in 2001, by Page Knoebel and Michael Giblin, the sanctuary is named after their first dog, Satchel a mahogany Irish Setter. The sanctuary was founded to help animals with medical and behavioral needs. The Shays are not the only Siesta residents to help the sanctuary. There is another resident on the key who helps financially with Satchel’s, Shay said. Satchel’s is a 501.c3 organization that is made possible by donations from members of the community. Those interested in donating or volunteering can find more information at http:// satchelslastresort.org/ , and those interested in donating to Reva’s care can find more information at http:// satchelslastresort.org/lets-help-revawalk-run-and-play/.

Miss Manners would have been pleased with September’s “special Gala” held at the Chart House on Longboat Key. The occasion was a series of announcements of what was happening in the Sarasota arts community this coming season. “Special Gala”was an appropriate title because it did not fit the normal Sarasota Gala profile: no silent auction, raffle, or pledge drives and it cost nothing to attend. Invited guests were not media nor high level movers or shakers – instead, they were simply people who were highly connected in their community and prepared to “spread the word” if they heard something good was coming over the horizon. And good things there were: the Artist series, the Sarasota Orchestra, Up with People, the Rotary Club of Longboat Key, the Venice Symphony, the Sarasota Ballet, La Musica, Key Chorale and others gave presentations about their Fall/Winter/Spring seasons. Google these organizations to see future performances; then save the

dates and buy tickets. Following the presentations there was a performance by principles of the Venice Symphony and dinner for the ninety attendees – all sponsored by Don Britt of Don411.com, the online entertainment and event calendar. The reason Miss Manners would have been happy is that two thirds of those attending could not hear the speakers very well and yet all sat quite attentively -really good manners – for what seemed like an hour. The take away from this is that Sarasota is blessed with more mind expanding organizations concerning the arts and related fields than any other city in Florida (and many adjoining states) and that people who represent these organizations should really take voice lessons so that they can project their voices when projecting their ideas. The Chart House Signature Salad was as splendid as ever and, based on the exclamations, all the main course selections were prepared beautifully.

So much has changed. But I suspect Thompson would have never considered bending the public trust into a pretzel in order to rescue one individual from the type of misfortune that all of us face at one time or another. What he would have done is work behind the scenes to help Mays out. He might have called some body shops around town looking for a sympathetic owner willing to do the necessary repair work at a reduced rate; he might have called on friends and members of the chamber of commerce to
donate to the cause of helping out someone in need. I have no doubt Mays would have been helped. But Thompson and those of his ilk would never have considered going down the slippery slope of picking winners and losers with taxpayer money. Like I said, it was a different time.

Who’s Playing Tonight
By Mike Sales
|An interview with Russell Donnellon The phrase “I’m a solo guitar instrumentalist”, is unlikely to convey the hours upon hours of practice and development over years of dedication to an instrument and a way of life that just 10 seconds of listening can do in an instant. Mastery has the power to truly amaze and you can find such a treasure every week on Siesta Key at The Cottage…his name is Russell D.
WPT: How did you go about making the transition? Russell: My goal was to create a complete musical structure, but could never quite do it with just a guitar, until I picked up finger style and learned how to play counterpoint. I brought that style to the pop, r&b, gospel, jazz and Brazilian music, without a rhythm section, at places where I played. WPT: How long did you stay in San Francisco? Russell: I developed a solo style and took it on the road, after a few years to play festivals across the country. I wound up doing that for about 30 years…traveling 1000 miles a week, ping-ponging around the states, with a couple of people I employed to drive, roadie and sell my CDs while I performed on the festival circuit.
WPT: Where are you from? Russell: I’m from New Jersey.
WPT: When did you start playing music? Russell: I started playing when I was 9, with my brother, who was 19 at the time. We sang Beatles songs together and worked out harmonies and I played in rock and roll bands for a couple of years. WPT: Did you have lessons? Russell: I’m self-taught. When I turned 13, I joined a Gospel band and played with them for most of my teenage years. I learned a lot by playing with them because most of the other players were 10-20 years older than me and all very good musicians.
WPT: 30 years? Russell: I did really well. I’d work 8 months out of the year, then practice, write and make records and travel for 4 months. I’d make a new record every 3 years and visit different countries every 3 years to get a taste of other places. WPT: What states did you play? Russell: I was ping ponging out of Detroit, New York, San Francisco and here on the Gulf Coast. I played; California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Carolinas, Virginia…all the way up through New England; Vermont, New Hampshire, New York State…all across the Midwest; Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Arkansas.
WPT: When did you start playing professionally? Russell: I first started getting paid in New York, where it’s a great honor just to play, even for free (laughs), so when I did get paid there it was just enough to cover expenses. When I was 24, I moved to (San Francisco) California where I fell into playing solo, waiting for a bass player to show up. I’d played in ensembles all my life, but didn’t know enough people out there to get anything going.

WPT: Have you ever had a job other than music? Russell: In my 20’s, I did quite a few jobs, each for a week…I was a plumber’s helper, a hot tar roofer, a hamburger flipper…I decided early on that I’d rather starve as a musician than tolerate anything I couldn’t enjoy. WPT: What can people expect to hear when they come to see you play? Russell: I am a solo improvisationalist instrumentalist. I play a style that recreates the entire landscape of the tune without the addition of tracks, loop-effects, harmonizers or vocals. WPT: What style do you play? Russell: I play familiar hit songs, with melody lines everyone will recognize and while I make sure to give them enough of the music to hold onto as something they know; for me, improvisation is the thing, so, even though everything I do is well plotted out, arranged and carefully rehearsed, each song takes its own course, every time
with what I’m doing…it is just too mechanical. At that point I lose the essence of subtle variation, which is so central to what I love most about performing live music. It’s just my personal thing, but it feels like I’m stuck in a mold, so I prefer to take the same approach to music that musicians did 500 years ago, when every note, played anywhere in the world was played live.
Russell Donnellon I play. I’m well prepared, with many different vantage points of looking at the song, but never know exactly which way I’ll play… it keeps it interesting to me and I feel, makes it interesting for the audience to hear. WPT: What genres do you play? Russell: I pretty much do everything…Pop, R&B, Samba, Salsa, Flamenco, Reggae, all played from a Jazz perspective, using a Classical technique, which allows me the counterpoint of 2 or 3 parts at once. It represents the entire song; much like you’d hear someone play a piano. WPT: You mentioned that you perform without any accompaniment; why? Russell: Although people are very accustomed to a heavily produced sound, with 100 tracks, a wide range of pitch and fidelity and modern technology has availed solo performers with the means to emulate that with looper effects, backing tracks and harmonizers; I find every added element that is repetitious and exact, controlled by machines, can’t breathe or move
WPT: Why instrumental? Russell: It’s a challenge to work in a town where most performers sing, but I provide an alternative for people who may be in the mood to hear songs they recognize, but without vocals for a change. There’s something beyond the story line of a song. Many lyrics share basic subject themes and to me, often sound more like similar works of poetry, but what really makes a song unique is how the lyrics meet the music. I study the lyrics over and over to make sure I understand the story and then tell that story with my guitar. WPT: Where can people come to hear you play on Siesta Key? Russell: I play at the Cottage every Friday and Sunday night 6-10pm. To find out more about Russell D, visit russelldonnellon.com The Cottage is located at 153 Avenida Messina, Sarasota FL Mike Sales is a local singer/songwriter visit mikesalessings.com for more info.

WPT: How did you wind up here full time? Russell: In about 2003, the music medium changed so drastically with the popularity of downloading. People just didn’t buy CDs enough to support that lifestyle anymore…So, I went to Spain and made a guitar and learned a lot, then I went to Cuba and studied Cuban music, but eventually I had to figure something else to do for work. Of the four hubs; New York, San Francisco, Detroit and here, I chose Siesta Key. I’ve been here for 5 years and I love it…I’m done with the road…for now.

Island Humor [ One of the island bartenders claimed he was the strongest man on earth since he could squeeze every drop of juice out of a lemon. He was so confident he bet $10,000 that no one could squeeze anymore out of a lemon he has squeezed. People from all over the country stopped in to take up the challenge. No one could do it. Then one day, a little nerdy guy walks in and says he’d like to give it a try. Everyone laughed at him as the bartender finished squeezing a lemon into a cup then handed him what was left over. After a few minutes, the guy manages to squeeze out 6 drops from the mutilated lemon. Amazed, everyone present wanted to know how he was able to do it. “Easy,” he replied, “I work for the IRS.” [ From the Northwest Florida Daily News comes this story of a Crestview couple who drove their car to Wal-Mart, only to have their car breakdown in the parking lot. The man told his wife to carry on with the shopping while he fixed it in the lot. The wife returned later to see a small group of people near the car.
On closer inspection, she saw a pair of male legs protruding from under the chassis. Although the man was in shorts, his lack of underpants turned private parts into glaringly public ones. Unable to stand the embarrassment, she dutifully stepped forward and quickly tucked everything back into place. On regaining her feet, she looked across the hood and found herself staring at her husband who was standing idly by. The mechanic, however, had to have three stiches in his forehead. [ A man approached a beautiful woman in the supermarket. “I’ve lost my girlfriend.” He told her. “Could you please stand here and talk to me for a few minutes?” “Sure, but I don’t understand how that would help,” she replied. “Well, he said, “It seems like every time I talk to a beautiful woman, my girlfriend appears out of nowhere.” [ An elderly man was out for a drive when he received a call from his wife. “Dear, be careful,” she said. “I just heard on the radio that one idiot out there is driving the wrong
HOTTEST BAR IN GULF GATE...
way on the highway.” “Are you kidding me?” he said “There are hundreds of them!” [ If anyone tries to claim the 1990’s aren’t trending, remind them that Jurassic and Terminator movies just came out and a Bush and Clinton are running for president.

[ Most of the men and women at the gym are working toward the same goal; getting the perfect female body. [ We know a guy and his wife who were happy for years. Then they met. [ An older woman was having difficulty at the ATM. She turned to the man behind her in line and asked, “Can you help me check my balance?” So he pushed her over. [ My daughter asked me what it’s like to have kids.” A woman said to her sister. “What do you think would be a good way I could demonstrate it to her?” The sister replied, “I would just interrupt her every 11 seconds.”

Just roll out of bed...your hair looks great! Shampoo and towel dry.... and you’re done! The style is in the cut, not the blowdry, so you don’t have to fuss with your hair to look good... even with fine, limp hair... and my new steam color process creates richer brunettes and spectacular blondes. The colors go deeper and last longer, yet are far more gentle to the hair. By Appointment Only with Ian:

Soulfully Yours Donnarose Q: Dear Donnarose, I’m trying to be more non-judgmental, but it’s so difficult when so many around me constantly judge. Any suggestions to make this easier? ~Thanks, Carl A: ~ “Judge nothing, you will be happy.” ~ Sri Chinmoy You may be less inclined to join in with the judging group, if you remind yourself of the repercussions. Many don’t realize that even if the people they’re judging can’t hear them, it’s their own bodies that will still be affected by the negative energy attached to their words. And this can accumulate and do a lot of damage to the immune system and cause illness. Also, you may notice that people who judge often, can’t seem to get out of that cycle. That’s because their vibrational frequency gets so low from the negative energy coming from their words that their actions continue to match their low frequency. And consequently, more damage is done to that person in all sorts of ways. Since you can’t run from the building when this judging is occurring, some tactics will have to be used. Some examples are: After a while, bring a more enjoyable topic into the mix; or, each time the bulk of the judgment dialogue is transpiring, minimize your participation, i.e.; Leave the room, or pull a little further away from the group, check your phone, grab some water, etc. Those who really want to be in your company, will begin to notice your withdrawal pattern, and will alter their behavior. The rest, well, they’ll choose to stay busy judging, as you reap the benefits of your efforts. ~ ♥ Q: Dear Donnarose, my mother is 80, has a very mean personality, and treats me horribly. She even gets mad when our father is nice to me. I live there at times to help care for her, but it’s getting harder to deal with this treatment. Please help. ~Janice A: ~ “Those who push your buttons the most are your greatest teachers.” ~ Unknown I can see your mother has a lot of stuck energy which
surely helps contribute to this situation. But, you can still lighten the load during your future encounters with her. The thing is, we all have scripts to act out in this Earthly play we’re in. In this situation, a part of your mom’s script (soul contract), is to be mean. This is to test you until you pass with good grades on your spiritual report card, so to speak. It’s the case where the above quote applies. Meaning, since you can’t depend on receiving love from your mother, you’re being forced to learn to go within to connect to your Higher Self to receive it. But, the good news is that this Inner source of love is consistent and always available. In the interim, the quickest way to peacefully communicate with your mother, is during any encounter with her, visualize your light talking to her light. Meaning, as you approach her, go right past her “mean” statements, visualize her and yourself as a blob of white light (which is your soul- the thing that’s making your heart beat right now), and then converse with her. So instead of an ego to ego encounter, this becomes a soul to soul encounter. This almost always has a more positive, if not more rational and peaceful outcome. Asking Spirit to help you both forgive each other and yourselves, is also needed. Try to keep this process simple, and the conversations as short as possible, all while keeping your energy body protected by Archangel Michael. And after some practice, you will definitely start to see the peace increase. ~ ♥ Donnarose Melvin is a professional psychic, medium and energy healer, whose pleasure it is to assist clients worldwide. Spanish Mackerel will please Siesta Key anglers in October
New marina owner Up until about 2003, the marina had a large travel lift that operated on rails and could haul boats in and out of the water. “They did bottom painting and worked on some rather large boats,” said Flynn, who was general manager from 2003, when the marina became Turtle Beach Marina, to 2006. As the Key has changed over the years, the marina was a fixture on the south end of the island. It now has new owners and faces new changes ahead. On Sept. 1, the same ownership company and management team that runs Marina Jack, located in the heart of downtown Sarasota, purchased the marina located at 8865 Midnight Pass Road. The marina is now called Bayfront Yacht Works, and the Turtle Beach Pub has been renamed the Turtle Beach Grill. According to county property records, Jack Graham Inc. has been leasing the property at Marina Jack from the city since 1974. The downtown marina has 315 slips.
Modern upgrades
In some respects the newly-named Bayfront Yacht Works will be returning to its origins, as the new owners plan to bring back a large lift that can handle boats up to 60-feet in length. Larger vessels can be hauled out of the water so crews can make repairs or provide maintenance. “This haul-out will cater to the clientele we host at Marina Jack, as well as the rest of the local boating community,” said Kat Wilson, Associate Manager of Public Services and Yacht Services Manager for Marina Jack. “Vessels do need to be taken out of the water for several maintenance items. There are not a lot of places on the west coast where vessels can be taken out.” In addition, the marina will receive some modern upgrades that will make it a boating attraction, including all-new boat racks, state-of-the-art restrooms and showers, updated retail space, new personal watercraft rentals through Bayfront Excursions, and a full-service maintenance department, complete with mobile technicians. Renovation work on the newlynamed Bayfront Yacht Works is expected to be completed in January, 2016, Wilson told Siesta Sand. Turtle Beach Grill, located on the west end of the property, will undergo minor repairs. The physical transformation includes a new interior and exterior appearance. Other plans include expanding the menu and beverage selections. “Our emphasis will be to expand the menu in certain areas while providing a quality food and beverage experience
October is a fabulous month to be fishing on Siesta Key! Shorter, cooler days result in water temperatures dropping into the low 70s, bait will be thick in the bays and out on the beach, and that will attract the gamefish. Many species are going to be caught using a variety of angling tactics. Redfish will still be schooled up on the flats in the north bay, snook will be in the bays, speckled trout, pompano, and Spanish mackerel will be feeding on the deep grass flats, and the beach should be outstanding for king and Spanish mackerel, false albacore, cobia, sharks, and even a stray tarpon. Anglers with small boats can catch large fish this month. The techniques and methods are really pretty simple. Mornings that dawn with easterly winds will find the inshore Gulf of Mexico flat and calm. Pods of baitfish will be seen on the surface, along with schools of feeding fish. Threadfins caught on Sabiki rigs and free lined out behind the boat will catch just about everything.
Anglers fishing the surf off of the Siesta Key beaches should experience good action this month. Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, pompano, flounder, and more will hit live and artificial baits. Mackerel like fast, flashy lures such as Gotcha plugs and silver spoons while the pompano and flounder prefer a bait that is moving slowly near the bottom. Jigs and live shrimp are a good choice. Casting jigs while drifting over deep grass flats will produce a lot of fish in October. Speckled trout, pompano, bluefish, mackerel, jacks, and ladyfish will hit a gold or Glow Bass Assassin Sea Shad soft plastic grub on a ¼ ounce jig head. Rootbeer and olive are also productive colors. Use light colored baits in clear water and dark colored baits in stained water. Spoons, plugs, and flies will also work well, as will live or artificial shrimp under a noisy cork. These same lures fished in Big Pass and New Pass will result in plenty of hook-ups as the fish migrate from the Gulf into Sarasota Bay. Fish
right on the bottom for pompano and just under the surface for blues and macks. Redfish will still be schooled up, but their numbers will be diminishing. The shallow flats in Robert’s Bay and the north end of Siesta Key are great spots to try. The docks and oyster bars off of Siesta Key will also produce redfish, along with snook, snapper, flounder, and drum. A live shrimp is a a great bait for fishing docks while Bass Assassin Elite Shiners are very effective working bars and points. A high, outgoing tide is best. Snook will be back in the bays and feeding aggressively on the flats, bars, and mangrove shorelines. Shallow diving plugs such as an (08) olive X-Rap are very effective and allow anglers to cover water quickly. Creek mouths, points, bars, and docks that have current are likely ambush spots. Bridges will produce a lot of snook for nocturnal anglers.
September Siesta Key Association Meeting Notes
Continued from cover story
By Roger Drouin Sheriff’s Office:
Lt. Kasper noted the sheriff’s office would not renew the lease for the Siesta Key substation when it expires Sept. 30. A temporary substation has been set up in a trailer in the Siesta Beach parking lot, and a new sheriff’s substation will be included in the remodeled concession stand that will house lifeguards and sheriff’s office. Deputies will have a good view, the lieutenant noted, of the beach and the parking lot. at casual family friendly prices,” said Tom Delong, Vice President of Turtle Beach Grill and General Manager of Marina Jack. The property was not on the market when it sold, and the new owners are not discussing the sales price, Wilson said. Turtles, the restaurant to the south of the grill and marina has not changed ownership. Turtle’s On Little Sarasota Bay is located at 8875 Midnight Pass Road. The marina has 25 wet slips and more than 140 dry storage slips. It had previously been on the market several years ago, but was taken off the market in 2006 after not selling.
“Fit the bill”
The new owners had been looking to purchase a second marina for some time, and the marina on Turtle Beach proved to be a good fit. “It just really is a hidden gem,” Wilson said. “It’s a great location.” “This property seemed to really fit the bill: right location, right price, right facilities. It is a place we can really buildup and make our own. We will bring the same resources we have at Marina Jack here.” The property has been in need of some updating. “It has been subject to deferred maintenance,” Flynn said. “Being on the water, there are a lot of environmental factors that impact it, as it does any structure on the water.” “It needs some TLC,” Wilson said. As of press time, work was well underway. Turtle Beach Grill was getting a new roof. The new owners had purchased several new kayaks to use as rentals.
Code Enforcement:
Code Enforcement Officer Susan Stahley and Michael Shay have worked in the past on the issue of illegal rentals. On some occasions, once the situation is addressed and the property owner contacted, the situation is resolved, Stahley noted. Stahley told members that she can adjust her schedule and come out after 5 p.m. if a code issue needs to be observed during the evening or outside normal business hours.
FDOT Presentation:
Photo by Ron Flynn “We have some brand new tandems, and I believe we are getting some new single kayaks,” Wilson said. “We have some new paddleboards. The Jim Neville Marine Preserve is right in our backyard, so that makes for a great paddleboard trip.” Structural and foundation work was underway at the marina, including work to make sure the facility could handle the large boat lift and the lift can move freely. “Right now it is half concrete, half asphalt,” Wilson said. “It has to be fully concrete, and has to be perfectly level.” Different contractors were working on different elements, from painting to the major concrete work. “We’ve only been here 11 days, and it is already looking different,” Wilson told Siesta Sand during a Sept. 11 interview. The marina remained “completely functional” during renovation work, except for closing for a brief period while concrete was poured. The grill has remained open and operational during renovation.
L.K. Nandam, District Traffic Operations Engineer, along with Michael Kautz, Highway Safety Manager, discussed the proposed changes to the intersection of Stickney Point Road and Midnight Pass Road. The state agency is proposing to change the intersection to improve pedestrian safety and operations. See the updated article on page 2.
Big Pass Dredge Project:
Catherine Luckner reported that, at the time, the Army Corp’s response to the Department of Environmental Protection’s request for more information about the proposal to dredge Big Pass and renourish Lido Beach was expected soon. Note the ACOE’s response came in following the September meeting. Luckner reminded attendees that the City of Sarasota is the entity that has requested the permit, and is working with the Army Corps on the project. Luckner said she believes alternatives can be considered before critics of the project have to resort to a lawsuit. “We have time to work it,” Luckner said. “Everyone is doing their part.”
Other business:
Members also discussed the reoccurring problem of trash on the beach. They discussed the possibility of trash bags dispensers so beachgoers can use the bags to bring out their trash. Shay mentioned the ongoing cost of replacing bags and the possibility of working with a corporate sponsor to defray those costs. Next meeting of the SKA Association takes place Oct. 1

|The Ultimate Sarasota Seasonal Treat That’s Rare But Worth The Effort…Snook! Stone Crab season opens up October 15, (which will be plentiful at that time at Big Water Fish Market) but unlike Stone Crabs that are brought to us by commercial fishermen, Snook (season: Sept. 1 – Nov. 30) cannot be commercially harvested so you have to catch it yourself. My staff and I field this same question all year as to why we do not sell Snook, especially now during Snook season which lasts until the end of November. Unfortunately, we do not carry nor will we ever have Florida Snook for sale. This answer is very troubling to our visiting customers who have heard about this delicious (Scamp like), yet elusive Florida Snook Fish. They have their heart set on eating some while in Florida and don’t quite understand why they can’t purchase it at our Big Water Fish Market. Many are unaware of a few minor FWCC rules and regulations. Here are just a few Snook facts: Fact 1: You will never find a Florida Snook in a restaurant or a retail fish counter. Snook is caught for recreational use only and is not legal for resale. Fact 2: Until the end November if you are lucky enough to catch a Snook it must fall between 28” and 33” to be a keeper and the keeper limit per fisherman is just one fish per day (FYI…if you go over or under the size or the quantity allowed, you will face a $500 fine per fish!) Fact 3: On top of your regular Florida Fishing License you must pay an extra $10 for a Snook tag if you want to keep a keeper. Fact 4: If you want to eat it..... you have to catch it yourself. With that being said, now you know why you can’t buy Snook, but there is no reason why you can’t go catch one yourself. Everybody knows that I am no expert on catching fish (just selling it)…after all my version of a Florida trifecta is catching a Catfish, Grunt, and a small Mangrove all within 24 hours. Fortunately for us I know a few guys who are expert Snook fishermen.
I spoke with Mason Tush of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters and Aaron Mobley manager at Big Water Fish Market who both agree on a few tips. “If you follow a few simple guidelines and you put in the time, Snook could very well be table fare for you one special night in October or November.” says Mobley. Easy for him to say.
Following is some noteworthy advice.
Get your fishing license renewed easily at CB’S. You can fish Snook by boat, off the beach or lighted docks. In the morning, you can fish over the grass flats or current structures with a Heddock Super Spook Top Water lure. A few morning location points of interest include The Venice Jettys, Blackburn Point or Long Bar which is the sandbar on the Southside of Siesta Key. In the evening fishermen have great luck under dock lights with live shrimp or a white 3D Minnow Yo-Zuri 70mm lure. As for fishing off the beach, I have had great luck in October and my recommendation is to use a small white Jig with a red head because it works great and will save a ton of time and hassle compared to live bait fishing. Snook are usually cruising right along the edge of the shoreline and will most often be facing into the current so you will want to cast into the current so your bait will be facing the fish. If you need a boat rental go to CB’S Saltwater Outfitters or if you’re looking for an inexpensive ICW (intercostal water) charter inquire at BWFM. For more advice, track down Mason at CB’s or Aaron/myself at Big Water Fish Market. You know where we are...now go find the Snook! Here’s a good Blackened Snook recipe but please note… if you want the quality and the delectable taste you’ve heard of, be sure you remove the skin prior to cooking or it will taste like soap (that’s why its nickname is the Soap Fish!).

Awesome Snook catch Ernie McAlister and Lindsay Melvaer with TNT Freedom Fishing Charters
Blackened Snook • 2 Snook fillets • Blackening spice • Oil, either vegetable or olive Preparation: Sprinkle blackening spice on fillet and press it lightly into the fillet. Heat a cast iron skillet on high and wait until the skillet is very hot. Poor a half-cup of oil in the skillet and add the fillets. Cook for about 3 mins. per side, depending on the thickness of the fillet, or until the seasoning develops into a crust. Finish in the oven at 350 or 400 degrees if the seasoning is close to burning but the fish isn’t fully cooked. If you’re not lucky enough to catch a Snook, a great substitute for Snook is Gag or Scamp Grouper which is available at Big Water Fish Market. It doesn’t matter what fish you’re cooking, always use the philosophy used at BWFM…KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)!

|Setting Anchor for Value at The Anchorage By Roger Drouin Each of the 98 units at The Anchorage Yacht and Tennis Club Condominium has a balcony off the living room and each bedroom. “Every unit has a balcony off the living room and all bedrooms,” said Donna Capdarest, general office manager at The Anchorage, at the corner of Stickney Point Road and Midnight Pass, 6415 Midnight Pass Road. The tower is comprised of two-bedroom, two-bath units and three-bedroom, two-anda-half bath units. The condo units range in size from 1,287 square feet to nearly 2,400 square feet. “They are large condos,” says Real Estate Broker Michael Renick, who has sold two condos recently in The Anchorage. But perhaps the biggest draw for potential buyers is what Renick describes as the attractive owner’s fees. The monthly condo fees are $353 for a two-bedroom and $590 for a three-bedroom, Capdaresp said. “The HOA fees are very attractive here,” said Renick, the Broker Associate at Team Renick Real Estate Services/Mangrove Realty Associates. “It is a well-run complex at a great location by the [Stickney Point] bridge, and they have deeded beach access.” Renick describes The Anchorage as an “affordable upscale complex.” Capdarest says an increasing percentage of buyers at The Anchorage are “working people, who are buying now in hopes of retiring here at The Anchorage.” This group of buyers is usually in their late 40s to 50s, and often these owners will rent their unit until they are in a position to retire. The one-week rental minimum policy allows owners to take advantage of the Key’s influx of tourists. The weekly rental rules combined with the prime location provide for excellent rental opportunities. One significant reason The Anchorage attracts working professionals is the value associated with the owner’s fees, which are comparatively low for Siesta, Capdarest said. The community has a full offering of amenities, including three tennis courts and a pool that stretches 35 feet by 75 feet. “We get lots of compliments on our pool,” Capdarest said. The community has an exercise room, his and her saunas, free WiFi, and a private dock for boaters. Some units have water views of the Gulf or Intracoastal. The Anchorage has private, deeded beach access, and is located close to public
Crescent Beach access just to the south. In the other direction, on the back east side of the property, a picnic area overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway. Grills for cooking out are available for use in the picnic area. A private canal — with the boat docks — runs along the southern edge of the property.
A stable community
There have been four recent sales over the past year. That is an indication that it is a stable condominium community. “Folks who are buying in there are staying there,” Renick said. “In the better-run associations, generally, you don’t find a lot of turn over.” Another indication that The Anchorage is a stable condominium is that the board, which manages the property, “stays on top of things,” Renick said. “My hat’s off to the work they have done.” “We keep our common areas and grounds improving and things are kept pretty nice around here,” Capdarest told Siesta Sand. In addition to selling two units at The Anchorage, Renick is the selling agent for a three-bedroom, 2,358 square-foot unit on the second floor that is currently listed. The condo has been updated, including the master bathroom. Priced at $599,000, Renick said it priced in the lower third of the price point for three-bedroom condos on Siesta. Threebedroom condos currently on the market on the Key ranged from $454,900 to $835,000 asking price. At the time of Renick’s MLS search last month, there were only 21 three-bedroom condo units on the market on Siesta.

Single Family Condos *Statistics provided by MFR MLS
August 2015, reflects 1,709 total sales in Sarasota and Manatee counties, up from last August with 1,649 sales. The entire 2015 year continues to remain on a record pace whereby year end could show the highest number of sales in the region’s history. Properties priced accordingly and in good condition are selling very quickly. The lower inventory accounts for the median sale prices climbing 18-21% over last year for single family homes and even higher for condos at 2427%. This market shows continued future growth potential.
