Game time: Where to watch playoff football

A

Fans at Munchie’s 420 Cafe live for the big football game days, when they can share the joy of winning and the agony of defeat.

By Ned Steele

ttention football fans: The month that matters has arrived. Yes, late December and January bring not only the College Football Playoffs and endless bowl games, but the NFL playoff buildup to the Super Bowl. And just as the players and coaches have been perfecting their moves and getting into peak shape for a championship run, so too have the popular bars and eateries in Siesta Key and Gulf Gate that cater to the gridiron gang. These fine establishments have been working all season towards this big month, introducing new specials, launching promotions, generally getting their A-game

on for this special time of year and, of course, recovering from two or three hurricanes. And now, they’re ready for you. What better time than postseason to share the excitement and the drama with a crowd of fellow fans and enthusiasts? The highs are high, the lows are less painful, and the fun is greater when you’re watching your favorite team with a crowd – preferably surrounded by tubs of wings and your beverage of choice. So, what are you waiting for? Check the TV schedules, grab your team’s jersey, and head on out to one of these local bars to enjoy the postseason action. While there can only be one national college football champion and one Super Bowl

victor, all these spots to watch the games are winners. Try one – or more. There are 47 bowl games and four rounds of NFL playoffs to feast on. MUNCHIES 420 CAFÉ in Gulf Gate attracts big crowds of Buccaneers and Detroit Lions fans all season long. With the Bucs in contention (at press time) and the Lions poised for a deep run, and a newly repaired tiki roof in place, Munchies is in celebration mode. Look for their game day specials: Five wings for $4.20 or 20 for $15; Wash them down with a sixbeer bucket for $20 or a bucket of six High Noons for $25. Top it all off with $1-off green tea shots. A Taste of Germany being served at Mama G’s

L

onging for a delicious German treat is a thing of the past now that Mama G’s has opened a new location just nine minutes away from Siesta Key Beach at 4413 South Tamiami Trail. Mama G’s website describes their bakery as a “beloved establishment that embodies the values of faith, food, and family.” The bakery is a family-owned business that began in 2015 and was founded by Beate Goldstein, aka “Mama G”, who comes from a long line of German bakers. Goldstein came to America 22 years ago and, over time, developed her own German bakery in Florida. “After working at the local gourmet market for a decade,

By Mackenzie Palmer she decided to go out on her own,” according to Mama G’s Website. “Equipped with ideas, lots of experience, the recipe book passed down from generations, and a business name given by her son-inlaw, she opened the door to Mama G’s German Bakery and Coffeehouse.” This act inspired her family to follow in her footsteps because now, Goldstein, her husband, and five of their seven kids run all six of their locations. In addition to their newest location on South Tamiami Trail, they also have two bakeries located in St. Petersburg, one in New College, as well as a bread company next to Simon’s Coffee House.

“We offer different coffee variations, smoothies, and savory snacks for a midday break,” Goldstein said. “We do vegetarian options, spinach, kale, or pesto. We have a menu that everyone should be able to find something on.” When walking into Mama G’s, you will not find any donuts, cookies, scones, or muffins, so the variety of offerings is different from a typical American bakery. The product itself is sweet and very flavorful, but not sugary sweet. They offer daily specials: Monday is pizza day, where they make their own pizzas; On Tuesdays they offer veggie burgers or veggie sandwiches, Continued on page 9V

It Is Stone Crab Season!!!

Fresh Catch Market & Grill has the Freshest & Best Stone Crabs in Sarasota Area

This a cool little spot in a strip mall on Tamiami Trail. There's ample parking and a couple of tables outside under the store rooftop. Inside is a nice dining room and bar seating facing the kitchen. A small "market" with fresh fish and shellfish is located at the rear of the dining room. Very casual. We were in for lunch and there was only one server, but service was excellent throughout and she was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and products like the canned non-alcoholic beverages.

Try Our Award-Winning Key Lime Pie

A nationwide contest recently conducted by Yelp named our key lime pie the "must try pie" in the state of FL.

We started with Devon's Lump Crab Cake which lacks any filler as advertised. Basically held together with some mayo and served with a grilled lemon and house remoulade. Delicious! We took two home! I ordered the grilled triple tail (any fresh fish available grilled or blackened) on a melt in your mouth brioche bun with a little tartar sauce. Excellent! My wife went with grilled snapper tacos and she was very happy. Of course, we saved room for the famous key lime pie which was undoubtedly the best key lime pie we have ever encountered. They have a good wine list and beer selection as well as some interesting non-alcoholic choices! If you're looking for fresh fish, GO!

Arts on the Horizon By Rodger Skidmore August

January is cold but August is hot. The Oxford Dictionary uses an additional set of words to define August: distinguished, respected, eminent, venerable, illustrious, etc. Using this set of identifiers, one could say that Shakespeare, writing his series of History Plays, using kings as characters to illustrate his themes, was “August”. And so too is August Wilson, who wrote a series of ten plays, collectively called The Pittsburgh Cycle, detailing the experiences and ongoing heritage of America’s African American community during our last century. The Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe’s production of Wilson’s sixth play in this cycle, Fences, runs from Jan 15 through February 23 at the Donnelly Theatre on North Orange. This play won a Pulitzer for Drama, and a Tony for Best Play in 1987 and was last seen in Sarasota 17 years ago. Jim Weaver will again be directing– for every man and for every play there is a season. As in many plays, there are allegories: in Fences, the fences are no exception; they keep things in and they keep things out. They delineate where one can go and what one can do. And, fortunately, to what one may aspire, in that, while, for some, the fence acts as a barricade, for others, it represents where one should go beyond: a starting point rather than an ending. Fences, as written, takes place in the Pittsburgh of the 1950s (where August Wilson grew up.) It could have been about Alabama, Sarasota, Dallas, the 1970s, the 1990s, or today–with the fences being just a little, or a lot, closer or further from home. Additionally, on January 19, the WBTT presents its annual celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebrating His Legacy in Spoken Word and Song, at the Sarasota Opera House. More info at westcoastblacktheatre.org.

Stylized or affected?

Kabuki is a type of Japanese play where the actors combine dance and dramatic performance. Bunraku is the same, except it is done with puppets. And in what kind of play do actors do fun things and talk in singsong rhyme? Why, in the Victorian period comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. While it is usually frowned upon to laugh in church, it will not only be permitted but will be encouraged at First United Church of Christ when the Choral Artists of Sarasota present a Gilbert & Sullivan Revue in the late afternoon of January 26. There will be extensive selections from H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), The Mikado (1885), The Gondoliers (1889), and The Pirates of Penzance (1879). Pinafore and The Mikado vie for being the favorite G&S opera as each strives to be the most amusing and irreverent. Class distinction, social order, and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority are hallmarks of their work. Don’t know much about the Victorian Period in England or why and how the English themselves made fun of it? Join director Joe Holt and Choral Artists singers on January 16 when they share highlights of the upcoming performance and explore some of the stories behind the songs. Not that it’s a reason to attend, but refreshments will be served. More info at choralartistssarasota.org.

Toes a-tappin’

Ham and cheese is a typical combo, as is PB&J. Everybody knows they go together and aren’t surprised when they appear on a menu. And then there are those combos that apparently go together for no apparent reason, like pickles and ice cream when one is pregnant. Country music, especially of the bluegrass variety, can set one’s toes a-tappin’ and classical music, of the cello variety, may cause listeners to close their eyes and drift along with the melody. But put them together and add contemporary dance, like adding mustard on that pickle, and those that close their eyes will miss a lot of the fun. Sarasota Contemporary Dance is hosting Natalie Helm & Bluegrass Band at the Cook Theater at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts on January 16-19. A repeat performance will be held at the SCD Home Studio on the 21st. Quartz, crushed by the movement of glaciers in Appalachia into white crystal sand, rushed down to Sarasota’s beaches at the end of the Big Melt which ended the last glacial period. Bluegrass music came much later to the hills of the Appalachian Mountains, but they’ve reached Sarasota, nonetheless. Natalie Helm drifted into Sarasota from the plains of Alabama in 2016 to become Principal Cello of the Sarasota Orchestra (after having been Principal with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra). Putting bluegrass together with a cello gets more moving than just toes as the dancers of SCD move their bodies to all that music. More info can be found at sarasotacontemporarydance.org. he creative and generous hearts at Captain Curt’s are at it again. Long known for their creative t-shirts and clever parodies, Captain Curt’s turned their attention on helping their hourly staff recover from the financial hardships brought on by the devastating 1-2 punch of Helene and Milton. Inspired by the many customers and friends inquiring how they could help, Captain Curt’s created a hurricane relief t-shirt and graciously donated all the profits generated by the sale of the t-shirt to their hourly staff. All the profits from the sale of the shirts were equally dispersed to their hourly staff members. None of Captain Curt’s salaried

staff nor the corporation received any of proceeds from the sale of the shirts. The management team acknowledged their staff – the heart and soul of their business was crucial in the recovery effort from the storms. Like many – Captain Curt’s Village was hit “extremely” hard. On a Facebook post, Captain Curt’s thanked everyone for the overwhelming support they received from around the country. The hurricane relief t-shirt generated over $40,000 in funds. Captain Curt’s Restaurant, coffee shop, gift shop, Sniki Tiki are now all open and ready to serve.

ou may find reds and big trout concentrated in potholes in January. Action with trout, blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano and more on deep grass flats can be good depending on conditions. There should also be good catch and release snook action in rivers, creeks and canals this month, although fishing docks for snook and other species is also a good option. It may be worth checking the coastal gulf for tripletail, cobia, false albacore (little tunny) and more when it’s warm. Snook season is closed during January, although catch and release fishing is allowed. Use tackle heavy enough to catch and release snook quickly with as little handling as possible. They are temperature sensitive, so I won’t target them if the water temperature dips below 60 degrees. However, fishing lighted docks in the ICW at night with lures and flies can be very good in January. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, Gurglers and shrimp fly patterns will work well for fly anglers. Spin anglers should score with CAL jigs with shad tails or 4” jerk worms, DOA Tiny TerrorEyz, and DOA 2-3/4” & 3” Shrimp. Fish peak tidal flows for the best action. Full regulations and details for all species can be viewed at https:// myfwc.com. You should also find snook in rivers, creeks and canals this month. Fish deeper water in outside bends to locate snook where you may catch them with CAL jigs and shad tails or jerk worms, DOA Baitbusters, or diving/ suspending plugs. You may also find reds, juvenile tarpon and even largemouth bass in the same areas depending on salinity. Reds should be a good option this month. You’ll find them concentrated in potholes when the tide is low. Fly anglers should score with lightly weighted flies fished on a 10’-12’ leader with a floating fly line. Reds feed on crustaceans this time of the year, so crab and shrimp fly patterns should work well. They may tail on shallow grass flats when the tide is low. You’ll need weedless rigged plastic baits or flies with weed guards to target tailing reds. A CAL shad tail on a weedless hook or a DOA

There should be good action in shallow water in January, Jerry Poslusny (top & middle), from Palmetto, FL; with a Tampa Bay snook and red and while fishing with Capt. Rick.

shrimp rigged weedless and fished backwards are a couple of my favorite lures for tailing reds. You may also find reds around docks, along with snook, sheepshead, flounder and more. Little Sarasota Bay has numerous oyster bars and docks that often hold reds in January. Work CAL jigs slowly along the bottom for the best action. You’re likely to find big trout in many of the same areas that you find reds. In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. The same lures, flies and techniques that are used for reds will also work for big trout. You’ll also find trout on deep grass flats in January along with blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano, flounder and more. I like to drift and cast ahead of my drift with CAL jigs and a variety of plastic tails and DOA Deadly Combos. Since trout can sometimes hold very tight to a particular spot or area, try to cover as much water as possible to find them. Once you’ve located fish, you can shorten your drift or anchor on them. A GPS can be useful for this type of fishing since the breadcrumb trail will allow you to duplicate your drift. A drift anchor will slow your drift so you can fish it more thoroughly or make it easier for fly anglers to move their fly. My favorite deep grass flats have a good mix of grass and sand with a strong tidal flow. Even though there may not be

much happening in the coastal gulf this month in the way of sight fishing, it may be worth a look when it is warm. Migratory species such as king and Spanish mackerel, cobia and tripletail probably have moved further south, however, they could reappear during warmups. Also look for false albacore (little tunny) when it’s warm since they may move from offshore to inshore depending on where baitfish are located.

January can be one of the toughest months of the year to fish. However, if you can choose when to fish based on tides and weather, it can be good. Action is usually good as weather fronts approach. Following fronts, fishing may be tough for a couple of days so afternoons may fish better at that time. I’ll let the stage of the tide determine where to look for fish. When the tide is low, look for reds tailing on shallow

grass or reds, trout and more in potholes or around docks. Look for reds or big trout cruising on shallow grass flats on sunny afternoons when the tide is high. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by agricultural, industrial and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation. Please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

A couple of really big Double Bills

Back in the day, a Double Bill was usually a first-class movie starring Charles Boyer and/or Bette Davis followed by a western with Van Heflin or Randolph Scott. The Sarasota Concert Association has such a large Double Bill this January that the first half will be on the 15th and the second half on the 26th, with both halves being first-class. Leading off will be French pianist JeanYves Thibaudet, performing at the Riverview Performing Arts Center, who will be having a double bill of his own–Claude Debussy’s Prelude Books 1 and 2. Unlike Chopin or Bach’s preludes, these are not centered around a strict pattern of tonal centers and are thus much more varied. That variety is evidenced by the titles of the 24 preludes: Dancers of Delpho, Footsteps in the Snow, Cakewalk, and The Terrace of Moonlight. Perhaps we will add our own visualizations to accompany the music as Thibaudet has said that each prelude “creates its own special sonic universe.” On January 26th, a perennial Sarasota favorite, the Cleveland Orchestra, is back at the Van Wezel. They start off with Sayaka Shoji performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major. Ms. Shoji first played this great work by Beethoven with the Cleveland Orchestra four years ago and is now on tour with them bringing delightful live music to a variety of cities. This concerto was premiered in 1806, and the violinist Franz Clement played a cadenza (an improvised ornamental passage) of his own between the first and second movements. Many other soloists have done the same over the years including Joshua Bell, Fritz Kreisler and the pianist for this series of concerts, Sayaka Shoji. Completing the performance will be Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The exhibition in question had over 400 paintings, but Mussorgsky limited this orchestral suite to ten movements due to time constraints. The movements are linked by a recurring and varied Promenade theme, as if the viewer was moving from one painting to another. This work was Mussorgsky’s homage to his friend Viktor Hartmann after that artist’s untimely death in 1873.

Both major pieces played by the Cleveland are conducted by Kahchun Wong, Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the Hallé, Manchester England’s Symphony Orchestra. Wong is praised for his electrifying stage presence. As an added January treat, the Sarasota Opera Studio Artists will be performing at First Presbyterian Church on January 29. These are singers in the Sarasota Opera’s more advanced training program and often participate in main stage productions. More info at scasarasota.org.

Bad driving can be fun?

If, due to poor hand-eye coordination skills you almost hit someone while driving, would you rather go to jail or do community service? Really? Helping the person you almost hit who, kind of, doesn’t like you? The play, Visiting Mr. Green was performed at the Asolo Rep back in February 2009. And now, here it is again January 29 – February 9, being performed by the Sarasota Jewish Theatre at The Players Centre located in The Crossings at Siesta Key on S. Tamiami Trail. Ah, but there is a difference between the two productions. The play has been updated to be “post pandemic”. And, since the theatre holds around 120 patrons surrounding three sides of the stage, everyone, including those in the 5th row, will be close to the action.

be otherworldly. Hence, the name Visions and Miracles is appropriate for an upcoming concert on January 13 presented by ensemble NEWSRQ at First Congregational Church. The concert starts with Hermitage Artist Retreat resident Anna Clyne’s composition for solo piano, Rest These Hands, a contemplative piece. Another work is by Hermitage artist Christopher Theofanidis. Visions and Miracles has been recorded by string orchestra, string ensemble and string quartet with clarinet. Dai Wei’s composition How the Stars Vanish, written for flute, clarinet, violin and cello, is like stars vanishing, ethereal. Another string quartet follows, Han Lash’s How To Remember Seeds. Ms. Lash has taught at the Yale and Mannes Schools of Music and is associate professor of music in composition at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Latin Grammy Award recipient Gabriela Lena Frank’s composition Milagros starts with an extended section of solo violin but then is joined by the other members of the quartet for several fast and slower sections, played together. A single note on the cello ends the concert. More info at ensrq.org.

will be. “Different” can mean “Somewhat the same”

To an aboriginal Australian, a walkabout can mean a journey that marks the transition from adolescence to adulthood. In Sarasota, it can mean a walk through an exhibition that changes the way one looks at the world. Kindasorta the same. Well, sorta. Art Center Sarasota, in its multigalleried building on Route 41, has several individual shows through January 18th - all are worth seeing. Upon entering on the right, Ermin Tabakovic’s Sigma Series - Space, Paradox & Beauty fills the room with a series of large abstract paintings, some of which, one could say, were examples of abstractrepresentationalism.

Winter has arrived

Eli Wallach played the lead role during its premiere as well as in its yearlong run in New York. FYI, there have been over 500 productions in 49 countries since its opening, So, it’s probably good. The documentary The Catskills–The Rise and Fall of the Borscht Belt will be shown for one day only, February 3. From 1900s immigrants renting out rooms in the summer to lavish hotels in three Catskill counties, it is truly an American saga. More info at sarasotajewishtheatre.com.

The Perlman Music Program Winter Residency is open for business. Between December 30 and January 11, there will be a series of orchestra and chorus rehearsals, along with student solos and master classes (viola and cello). Most of these will be at the USF Sarasota/Manatee Campus Performance Tent or in their Selby Auditorium. The orchestra and chorus members are not just music students but are selected students from top music schools from around the world. Hearing their Solo, Orchestra and Chamber Quartet Works in Progress will give you an idea of how good this next generation of classical musicians

On the left of the entrance is a room filled with joy. E.A. Kahane’s Come Join the Parade: 25 Years from My Third-Floor Window is truly magical. Ms. Kahane lives along the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade route and, over the years, has taken many, many photographs of this, and other, parades. There are dozens of her photographs on display in this gallery, in all sizes. Moving down the ramp towards the main gallery one comes to the room with Keenan Perren’s show Push, an innovative artistic reconstitution of broken skateboards which have been jigsawed into portraits and sculptures. They do hold your interest. And in the main gallery there are over 100(?) paintings and sculptures, all on the theme of Trompe L’oeil–and many of them do. So many favorites to view. With ten TV screens in the tiki bar and seven more in the pub, Munchies will blast audio of the day’s biggest games - and should the Bucs and Lions end up going head- tohead, they’ll go with whichever team has more fans on hand. (Challenge on, fans.) FOOD + BEER in Gulf Gate is a big Philadelphia Eagles hangout on fall Sundays -- they call it the Eagle’s Nest -- and those fans are hoping for a long, rewarding postseason as well. Food + Beer will oblige them with a slew of specials. They’re talking $5.50 shots: PB& J with screwball, Florida Tea with Jameson Orange, and Altos Blanco Tequila. They also are offering $6 Altos Margaritas or Busch Light beer for $2.75 per 12 ounce can or $13 for a bucket. All that, and 26 TV screens. GILLIGAN’S ISLAND in the village is fully reopened and in full party mode. There’s so much going on -- live bands included – that you might not think of it as a sports bar, but they have 12 55-inch screens (six inside, six outside) so it’s a great place to catch a game. Happy hour lasts for seven hours: 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. They offer well drinks and domestic pints for $3 and domestic pitchers for $12. SKOB in the village is another place hopping with all kinds of activity that’s also a game day destination. An official Chicago Bears bar, they are nonetheless not

shut out of the postseason action even though Da Bears are. Despite their beloved team’s playoff absence once again, SKOB will run all its regular season game day specials: Sunday Sliders, selected beer pitcher specials, and, for diehards, Bears’ apparel for sale. Other places on the key with reliably good postseason football action: Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar with its 30 screens welcomes Ohio State fans, who were hoping (at press time) to advance in the College Football Playoffs. Crescent Club is a big Buccaneers bar, and Bills fans are also numerous. Daiquiri Deck can always be counted on for a good time, regardless of which team you’re rooting for. And in Gulf Gate, there’s Moondoggy’s Saloon with its Bills crowd and 26 screens. So, if you’ve been to enough chips-and-dip get-togethers at the neighbor’s or perhaps hosted more of them than you’d care to admit, head to your favorite watering hole this playoff season and get caught up in the once-a-year excitement of crowning a champion.

The assortment they offer is what makes them unique. “Our prime product is definitely our bread. Our bread is made with no milk, sugar, or extra preservatives,” Goldstein explained. “It’s a European style bread. It’s a variety of breads, from rye to wheat bread”. An important factor to their business is the quality and freshness that comes with each bite. “Everything is made fresh daily,” Goldstein said. “The bread, the pastries, and everything. Freshness is a big part of the whole quality process.” Mama G’s offers different kinds of strudels including apple, cheese, walnut, poppyseed, and pecan. In addition, they have a selection of different kinds of croissants and Danish. “We have forest cake, which is a traditional German coffee cake,” Goldstein said. “We have apple pie, and now for Christmas time we have traditional Christmas items that are very common in Germany.” With the holiday season around the corner, Mama G’s just started making their Christmas bread which consists of a lot of eggs, butter, raisins, candied oranges, lemons, and almonds. Also on their holiday menu is a traditional German Christmas marzipan and chocolate marzipan with hazelnut. They also sell a large selection of German Christmas cookies. “We also make a fruit bread with dark rye flour dough with dates and baked raisins,” Goldstein said. If you’re looking for a new lunch spot or a place to get coffee and just relax, Mama G’s hours are Monday through Saturday from 6am to 4pm. The bakery is closed on Sundays.
