on Siesta Key Real Estate Almost every morning, when the sun starts peeking through my shutters, I feel the slight temptation to pinch myself just to make sure that this is actually real. And I am certainly not done – I have not “arrivedâ€? as they say. Even though I got my real estate license eight years ago and can proudly confess that my business has been great the last three years despite the recession, I consider my career in its early beginnings. I joined Michael Saunders & Co. in 2009 because I was still fairly new to Sarasota and I felt I needed the right platform from which I can take off and soar in the real estate business. The sky is truly the limit in real estate and my parents taught me early in life that hard work and persistence always pay off, but the company helped me considerably to get my foot in the door. May is the month we typically set aside to remember and honor our moms and those ZKR SDLG WKH XOWLPDWH VDFULÀFH WR VHFXUH WKH freedoms we enjoy today. All are heroes in my eyes since they have given much in the hopes of providing better opportunities for the next generation. I think back to my mom and what a remarkable woman she is. She was born in Indonesia and traveled half way around the world, leaving behind family and friends, to help fulfill my dad’s vision of making a better life for their new family. She overcame her shyness and tackled the language barrier learning how to read, write and speak English enabling her to secure a job so together my parents could provide us with a better life and education. She, like so many moms, takes care of business. Good moms know how to nurture, and play a major part in shaping the values in our life. They are our early role models and are there to kiss away all our boo-boos. They give America her next generation and the brave men and women that serve our country.

We have no veterans in our family that died serving our country. Complaints of excessive noise in Siesta Key Village continues to be a problem
Siesta Key residents and businesses in the Village continue to grapple with the problem of excessive noise. On the one hand, businesses rely on patrons having a good time so they will continue to return to their establishment. The businesses do their best to stay in compliance with the noise ordinance, staying within the decibel levels. On the other hand, residents/visitors in close proximity to the Village have the right to get some sleep. It takes just one peep and a wiggle from a charming Snowy Plover chick to kick-start the action. Many wonder why these chicks and other resident bird species are so important to our beach community. Aside from the fact that the birds’ presence on Sarasota beaches is an ingrained pattern of procreation, a favorable environment – unpolluted, a good food source is an important factor in successful bird nesting and survival. At the Siesta Key Association (SKA) meeting in April, the Sarasota Audubon Society (SAS) President, Jeanne Dubi, shared with the audience that one of the criteria considered by Dr. Beach in rewarding Siesta Beach its top ranking in the US was the number of birds inhabiting the beach. Siesta Beach is all the more special if its favorable environment is for the birds, so to speak. Jeanne also made special mention of a different version of a snowbird. Just like many of our Sarasota snowbirds, a Peregrine Falcon arrives each October and, right on schedule, departs its perch high atop one of our Siesta condominium buildings in the third week of April. The history of Sarasota is inextricably intertwined with the QDWXUDO HQYLURQPHQW DQG HIIRUWV WR VKDSH WKH ODQG WR Ă€W WKH needs of a growing community. Over a hundred years ago, before the construction of roads and bridges throughout the county, life here was very different. Siesta Key in particular was isolated and inaccessible. Big changes began on the key when Harry Higel began to promote his development, “Siesta On The Gulf.â€? Platted in 1907, the subdivision was located on the north end of the Key, two and a half miles across Sarasota Bay from the mainland. At the time it was conceived, the only access to the Key was by boat. The trip by ferry from downtown to Sarasota Key, where the development was located, took 20 minutes. According to the promotional brochure for the development, Higel spent $40,000 improving the property â€œâ€Śdriving artesian wells, laying miles of VLGHZDONV GUHGJLQJ RXU FDQDOV Ă€OOLQJ LQ low places, building docks, bridges, boat ways bungalows and one hotel.â€? One of the development’s early rustic bridges is pictured. Documents accompanying the picture indicate that it existed by 1915 and spanned Bayou Louise. It was not until several years

A year later, in the Harmony Subdivision – platted just south of there – more canals were constructed. The subdivision was designed to connect to the canals immediately to the north. Spanning these canals were eight “pseudo-humpback bridges, so named in a 1955 Sarasota Herald-Tribune article to differentiate them from the humpback bridges that spanned Hanson Bayou, Bayou Louise and the bridge over the Grand Canal.

Perhaps the most unique charity in the Sarasota area is Southeastern Guide Dogs. Here, world-class guide dogs are bred and trained, with the goal of providing mobility for the blind, giving them independence and dignity. The Sarasota location for Southeastern Guide Dogs is located at 1618 Main Street at the intersection of Main and Orange. This site serves as the city base for harness training guide dogs so that trainers can work with students in an urban environment. It also offers visitors a chance to become involved in Puppy Hugging and Obedience Demonstrations. The main campus of Southeastern Guide Dogs is a beautiful 23 acre campus in nearby Palmetto. Since 1982, the organization has created approximately 2,600 guide dog teams, carefully matching each trained dog to its visually impaired handler. The cost for breeding, raising, training, matching, and providing lifetime follow-up care for just one single guide dog team is approximately $60,000. These skilled service animals are given free of charge to the blind. There are no government grants funding the organization: it operates solely from private donations, which are taxdeductible. Besides being blind, many people— particularly military veterans—have

Not every Southeastern dog makes the cut to become a guide dog: some become facility therapy dogs, and a few of these have been incorporated into therapy programs at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and various Veterans’ Administration hospitals. Perhaps he paints over a photograph that has been een enlarged and projected onto canvas, I wondered—but no, that’s not how he does it. True, he works from a photo – either one he has taken himself or one the client has provided. He enlarges that photo a bit, so he can see detail, and then pins it up on the wall. Finally, he paints what he sees on canvas, and the result is astonishing. “I start with a regular sized snapshot. I’ve got a printer where I can enlarge. I can choose parts of the photograph to enlarge,â€? Leroy says. Usually he blows up his photo to standard 8 ½â€? x 11â€?, and pins the paper on the wall. If it is not too hot, I take my Rhodesian Ridgeback “Noahâ€? with me. Noah can go and go, if not forever than certainly longer than I can, which is frustrating at times. If I don’t feel up to the challenge, I leave him at home or I just jump on the treadmill. In the spring, when it gets warmer, it is Noah who loses his ambition to beat me and I get to drag him the last 200 feet back to the house. I call that payback. In the summerr we both stick to our more h hubby h bb and d Noah’s N h’ buddy, b dd leisurely walks in the evening with “Skyâ€?. Our Fridays usually end in our favorite Siesta Key restaurant: CafĂŠ Gabbiano. Pietro, his wife Susan, Marco and Karen make us feel like family. The food and wines are fantastic and owners and staff always rise to the occasion, and for these reasons we happily take all our friends, clients and business partners to this very authentic Italian retreat as part of our celebration of life, a successful sale, or business transaction. Speaking of celebration, we continue to get excited over the improvement of the Sarasota Real Estate market. According to the Sarasota Association of Realtors, March sales hit a seven-year high with 831 properties changing hands during the month. The most recent press release states: ‘Not since September 2005 has the local real estate association seen sales at that level’. SAR President Laura Benson reported “The strength that the Sarasota market has demonstrated in the past

No longer are the porcelain surround tub/shower combinations a preferred option. They are used today when a shower/tub is necessary and space requirements are not sufficient for their separation. Shower curtains create an undesired additional wall that further encloses the room. Minimal designs would normally entail more space than the average dwelling allows on Siesta Key. When a new client comes in there are times when within moments of starting the massage the person feels safe enough to open up and talk. It’s wonderful to create a space where people can feel safe, comfortable, and share during the massage. Being able to be a sounding board, stand-in friend or just being present quietly is part of the healing that isn’t often discussed but very valuable for new or interested people to know about. All things in the room are sacred; conversations are FRQÀGHQWLDO 7KHUH LV D KLJK OHYHO RI WUXVW on both sides. Often times a new massage client will come in with undiagnosed pain. I then become a “gatekeeper” of sorts to help
guide them to the next level of care if needed. Many times they have back issues that need more than massage. It’s then I suggest or refer them to an appropriate physician or chiropractor who can suggest other avenues of healing. Sometimes it’s just a matter of a few simple encouraging words about lifestyle changes that propel a client towards a new level of healing. kes Being a DAYMAKER, everyday makes my job a joy for all the happy tourists who have only dreamed of having a massage on the beach. There have been so many days this past season I can remember saying, “… and I get paid for doing this?” Bringing some joy to the lives of others has been and continues to be one of the highlights of my career. Giving massages on Siesta Key beach is as blissful as it gets for all involved. I love creating special time for couples on vacation and entire families wanting to give their young children life long memories ZLWK WKHLU ÀUVW PDVVDJH RQ WKH EHDFK 6R many times I have heard, “You’ve made our dream come true”. I recently had the privileged of massaging a mother and (grown) daughter; one of whom had been going through some very serious medical issues. Their time getting massaged side by side on the beach created a lifetime memory and was, as they expressed, the highlight of their vacation. Before heading back home, why not complete your stay in paradise with a relaxing beach massage and allow all your senses to open up and participate. You never know what transformations are in store for you. Constance Lewis is the owner of Massage Experience Siesta Key located in the Village at Siesta Village Plaza. The “Fab Threeâ€? a Tribute to the Beatles
Growing up in a navy family (a pirate at heart) LIJ has been traveling and playing around the world, now he has slowed down and moved onto his sail boat here near Siesta Key. With plenty of stories to tell mixed with music from artists such as Jimmy Buffet, Zac Brown, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Sublime, Vanilla Ice, David Allan Coe, and many others - along with original songs (lots of crowd interaction and improv)...So get all dressed up in your cleanest dirty clothes, shoes are optional! Sit back, relax and if you end up quitting your job and moving to the beach, you can blame it on LIJ.
Fab Three is an accoustic trio. Our repertoire consists of specifically Beatle music performed with an emphasis on our vocals. Michael Corley is a sniper on lead guitar. Rick Rehnberg is mechanic that incorporates bass into his rhythm guitar work. And John Garrett provides tight rhythmical pecussion to hold it all together. We all have our parts and we do our best to exist in our own individual frequencies DQG GRPDLQV 7KH UHVXOW LV D WLJKW XQLÂżHG YRLFLQJ of the best in Beatle music. www.fabthree.com

The workshops are a fun way to learn valuable skills that touch a variety of ght problem areas in our lives. Right now they are offering workshops that deal with grief, anxiety, assertiveness, trouble with work, relationships (communication), stress, ageing parents, making decisions, self-esteem, menopause, ager, and post-partum, dealing with your teenager, also both an essay writing workshop and a book reading discussion group that focuses on how the message that the book offers, affects everyone individually. in a relationship of trust and respect to individual adults, teens, couples, and children. Counseling, coaching, and advocacy sessions are generally an hour in length and workshops are an hour and a half in length. The center offers a supportive and inclusive environment designed to facilitate healing in such areas as: relationship struggles, trauma recovery, general emotional stress, life transitions, personal growth depression, anxiety, body image, addiction, interpersonal skills, gender & sexuality, and grief and loss.
